The sequel to Rian Johnson’s 2019 murder mystery Knives Out is making waves in more ways than one.

It’s estimated that Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery earned a solid $15 million in a one-week limited release. The whodunit has received wholly positive reviews and a rare 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It has also produced one quite unlikely star: a luxury superyacht known as Aquarius , which is, coincidentally, available for charter .

The 151-footer served as a backdrop for one of the key scenes in Glass Onion . The yacht’s captain, Ali Göksoy, also scored a cameo in the film. For a couple of hundred thousand a week, you too can experience a little Hollywood glitz and glamor aboard Aquarius .

Delivered by Turkey’s Mengi Yay in 2016, the superyacht pairs a straight bow with a handsome wood hull and superstructure. She offers a generous interior with five lavish cabins for up to 10 guests. The main deck owner’s stateroom features a king-sized bed, two balconies, an office and an en suite. On the lower deck, you’ll find three double staterooms and a twin cabin. There will also be a crew of nine catering to your every whim as if you were an A-lister.

Outside, meanwhile, Aquarius sports a veritable beach club at the stern, a Jacuzzi on the foredeck, a sizable flybridge and several other spots for sunning. She also comes with a full fleet of toys and tenders in case you need to make a quick escape. The vessel even has a spot on the aft deck for a couple of roadsters.

As for grunt, Aquarius is powered by twin Caterpillar engines that give her a cruising speed of 12 knots and a top speed of 15 knots. Of course, the yacht’s also equipped with stabilizers that make cruising the Mediterranean a real treat.

Aquarius is available exclusively with Ocean Independence . You can book her for charter in Turkey for roughly $228,000 (€220,000) a week.

The 45m (150ft) superyacht AQUARIUS has wowed audiences in her debut appearance on the thrilling murder mystery Netflix film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , which has already proven a huge hit after ranking number one on Netflix’s ‘top 10 Films in the UK today’.

A long-awaited sequel to the original Knives Out film that arrived in 2019, Glass Onion features more opulence and drama as Daniel Craig returns as Detective Benoit Blanc to solve a very layered murder mystery.

While the first  Knives Out  film was set in a very Cluedo-Esque manor house in Massachusetts, USA , the second movie heads to a house called the ‘Glass Onion’ on a private estate on a fictional Greek island called 'Pisceshite Island.' 

A number of scenes take place on board yacht AQUARIUS, the first being when the luxury motor yacht transports a group of friends to the lavish private estate of a tech billionaire, but when someone turns up dead, it appears that everyone on the island is hiding their own dark secrets, making each of them a threatening suspect.

 Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery ’s Superyacht Star

One of the biggest blockbuster debuts of 2020, Knives Out is now being followed up by its whodunit sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery . Leading luxury superyacht charter company, Ocean Independence , makes an appearance in the film with one of its most extraordinary vessels .

The murder mystery flick tells the tale of a tech billionaire’s private island retreat with friends. After one of his guests ends up dead, Detective Benoit Blanc investigates the crime. 

The star-studded cast includes Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, with Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista. 

However, one of the undeniably biggest stars of the film is not an actor or actress, but is the setting for one of the crime comedy’s key scenes. Part of the film is set on Captain Ali Göksoy’s 46 meter superyacht, Aquarius . 

Aquarius can accommodate up to ten guests in five cabins. Boaters can also unwind on one of several balconies, in the Jacuzzi, or at the sprawling beach club. 

The posh superyacht is currently offered for charter exclusively from Ocean Independence for EUR 220,000 (approximately $231,363.00) per week. She will become available in Turkey in mid-September.

Aquarius will make her Netflix debut on December 23 and be featured in numerous movie theaters.

Nearly three years after Knives Out was originally released in late 2019, we’re finally going to get a sequel: Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery . That means we’re due for more quippy dialogue, zany characters, and another thrilling mystery very soon, but not soon enough.

The complete plot of Glass Onion is not yet clear, but we know that Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc will once again put his detective skills to the test–this time on the picturesque Greek island of Spetses. If Glass Onion is anything like its predecessor, the audience is in for a real treat.

Here’s what we know about the film so far, from its star-studded cast to its potential release date.

When is Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery being released?

The sequel hits Netflix globally on Friday, Dec. 23, just in time for the holidays. It will also arrive in select theaters at a yet-undisclosed date.

Who’s in the cast?

What is it about.

Glass Onion focuses on what happens when a tech billionaire Miles Bron (Norton) invites his closest friends to a remote island in Greece. Of course, it isn't the relaxing getaway it sounds like; someone winds up dead, and it's up to Detective Blanc to solve the case. “If Knives Out was about the murderous ties of flesh and blood, Glass Onion makes a good case for being just as wary of one’s closest friends,” according to Tudum .

The mystery will allow viewers to get to know Craig's Blanc a little better. “We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes,” Johnson told Tudum. Like the OG Knives Out, Glass Onion was also inspired by the director's love for Agatha Christie, but it will feel entirely different thanks to its specific influences from “tropical murder mystery” films like 1982’s Evil Under the Sun and 1973’s The Last of Sheila .

The inspirations from the latter are pretty obvious. “First of all, it's structured around a group of friends, or frenemies, who all have a power dynamic with one of their successful friends,” Johnson explained. “It begins with him sending an invitation for them to come and play this murder mystery game at this exotic locale. In The Last of Sheila , it's on his yacht, and everything ends up going horribly wrong. That is essentially how Glass Onion begins.”

Is there a trailer?

In Netflix’s 2022 Movie Preview, a short clip from Glass Onion could be seen towards the end of the video. (Skip to timestamp 2:35.) It shows Blanc and some characters boarding a yacht in Greece. Speculation has led many to believe that Johnson will release the trailer at a film festival this fall, according to Variety . No promises, though.

Netflix further teased the film on Aug. 22, sharing first-look photos of the cast together, and Johnson behind the scenes with Janelle Monáe.

And finally, an official trailer arrived on Sept. 8.

Netflix also shared a new clip during Tudum 2022. “The mystery begins when a group of friends get invitations in the form of an intricate puzzle box, but what starts out as a game ends as something more nefarious,” Johnson says introducing the footage.

The teaser shows that said puzzle box in action. Recipients solve a variety of riddles to unveil an over-the-top invite to a long weekend on their friend Miles' private island. There, they'll solve more mysteries—including one about Miles' murder.

Another official trailer arrived on Nov. 7 too.

Where can I watch the original Knives Out ?

For those wishing to catch up on the first film before the sequel arrives, Knives Out (starring Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Christopher Plummer, and more) is currently available to rent on Prime Video.

Whatever the storyline and release date of Glass Onion may be, the A-list cast and the stunning filming location are going to make for a juicy whodunit. Who knows, it might even outdo the first, though the presence of Chris Evans (and his famous cable knit sweater) will be deeply missed.

Everyone is a suspect, but with the help of Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas), Harlan’s nurse and close friend, Blanc eventually solves the puzzle and reveals who was truly responsible for Harlan’s death. Knives Out told a full story and brought the arcs of its characters (all of them) to a satisfying end, but its success was such that a sequel was greenlit.

Simply titled Knives Out 2 , the movie has Rian Johnson back as director, producer (along with Ram Bergman), and writer, but it won’t be a direct sequel to Knives Out . Instead, Knives Out 2 is seen as a standalone movie with Benoit Blanc solving a new mystery, completely separate from the Thrombeys, and in a new setting, similar to Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novel series. What Knives Out 2 is also doing differently is its release, as it will skip a theatrical release and instead will go straight to Netflix , and the streaming giant has shared the first (although very brief) look at the movie. In its 2022 movie preview trailer , there’s a shot of some of the new characters and Benoit Blanc boarding a boat, and that new setting is enough to help Knives Out 2 beat its predecessor.

Knives Out 2 was shot in Greece, and while plot details haven’t been revealed yet, the brief look in the aforementioned Netflix trailer shows Katherine Hahn, Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr., Madelyn Cline, and Dave Bautista before revealing Daniel Craig as well. The six new characters are boarding a boat in Greece, hinting at a big part of the story taking place in the boat, meaning it will be a more contained mystery than the one at the Thrombey house in the first movie, giving it a more Agatha Christie-like vibe. Even if many parts of the story take place on land, taking Blanc to the other side of the world, to a completely different setting from the somewhat isolated Thrombey mansion , is already of big help to Knives Out 2 , as it makes it unique and sets it apart from the first movie, and helps it avoid repeating the same aspects of its predecessor, which is a common trap for sequels and detective stories.

There’s still a lot to learn about Knives Out 2 , and while the Netflix trailer gave a very brief look at it and it doesn’t reveal much about the plot, it gives enough hints to know that it’s on the right path to be different from the first movie and it has the potential to even beat it. Knives Out 2 doesn’t have an official release date yet, so it’s just a matter of waiting for Netflix to share more information.

Everything To Know About The Knives Out Sequel

Fans who want to see the movie in theaters this November can get tickets starting Oct. 10.

When it first premiered in 2019, the comedic mystery movie Knives Out won our hearts with its twisted storyline, star-studded ensemble, and an endless supply of quotable moments (“I read a tweet about a New Yorker article about you”). Chris Evans in that now-iconic sweater helped, too. Good news for fans of the hilarious movie, helmed by Daniel Craig’s Southern-accented sleuth, Benoit Blanc: two new Knives Out films are on the way. As first reported by Deadline, Netflix was close to acquiring the next two Knives Out installments for more than $400 million, “one of the biggest streamer movie deals in history.”

After a year of waiting, fans are finally privy to what sort of whodunnit misadventures detective Benoit Blanc will be embarking on next. In a series of tweets on June 13, director Rian Johnson introduced the sequel’s official title, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and confirmed the next batch of star-studded would-be criminals involved in another twisty case. Here’s everything you need to know before audiences on another clue-filled journey including the plot, cast, and release date.

The Glass Onion Plot

Expect a return to fun mystery vibes — but not to the Thrombeys’ New England “ancestral family home.” This time, Blanc is going to Greece (cue the Mamma Mia memes because he’d make an amazing fourth dad for Sophie) to “peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects” per the logline.

Though talk about the Knives Out sequels started pretty much as soon as the first film premiered, with fans thinking the sequel would be set on some kind of Thrombey family vacation to the Mediterranean, this isn’t the case. Johnson has been clear that he is envisioning more of an anthology of standalone stories rather than a continuation of the dysfunctional family fans met in 2019. As he told The Hollywood Reporter in February 2020, “Think of it just like another Hercule Poirot novel from Agatha Christie, so a whole new location, whole new cast.”

Johnson, who also serves as the writer of the Netflix film series, doubled down on this inspiration further on Twitter on June 13, 2022. He wrote, “When I made Knives Out , that’s what excited me about the prospect of making more mysteries with Daniel as Benoit Blanc - to emulate Christie and have every film be like a whole new book, with its own tone, ambition, reason for being… and (ta dah) title.”

The Glass Onion Cast

Craig, of course, is reprising his role for the series and just like the first film, he’ll be investigating a group of Hollywood’s favorites. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed in May 2021 that Moonlight actor and “Pynk” singer Janelle Monáe has been cast in an unspecified role. THR and Deadline also confirmed Kathryn Hahn of WandaVision “Agatha All Along” fame, Oscar nominee and Hamilton alum Leslie Odom Jr. , Fabletics entrepreneur and Bride Wars actor Kate Hudson , and Edward Norton ( Fight Club ) and Dave Bautista ( Guardians of the Galaxy ) are all set to appear in the film .

In June, Deadline kept the cast confirmations coming by reporting Madelyn Cline of Outer Banks and Jessica Henwick of Game of Thrones would join the sequel. Not long after, Twitter went wild after Ethan Hawke , who was working on Marvel’s Moon Knight movie at the time, appeared to be filming with the cast in Greece. Johnson’s teaser video included all but one of the new cast members reported by Deadline. Hawke is noticeably missing from the video credits so it’s either he ended up not joining the film or he’ll make a surprise appearance. All of these roles are currently unknown — are they also family with secrets? Are they strangers bound by a Santorini expedition? will anyone be wearing a chunky knit sweater?! — but it won’t be long before we get character descriptions and see who else will accompany Blanc in the surely twisted web.

On August 22, 2022, Netflix shared a first look at the entire Glass Onion cast seated around a large wooden table for a “killer party.” Craig’s Blanc and Norton’s to-be-announced character stand at each end of the table, while Monae, Hahn, Odom Jr., Henwick, Cline, Hudson, and Bautista sit in notably varied costuming (Henwick and Cline are wearing distinctly opposite outfits, suggesting the characters were in disparate environments before being brought together by the crime at hand).

In April 2021, Jamie Lee Curtis, who starred as Linda in the first film, took to Instagram to address the casting situation in a playful way , saying that the family was in counseling and that their “therapist suggested they stay away from Benoit Blanc in the future.”

“Linda was fine as she kicked her loafer wearing prick of a husband, sorry @donjohnson to the curb,” she continued. “The rest of them are hustling. Joni has some vaginal scented bath bomb, Walt is self publishing his memoir. NONE of us will be joining Mr. Blanc in Greece.” OK, so we may not get the Thrombeys back — but the improvised fan-fiction Curtis just provided almost makes up for it.

However, we might not want to rule out all familiar faces just yet. Ana de Armas, who received a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Marta in the first Knives Out film, told Flaunt in October 2020, “I hope this is one of those surprises that 2021 will bring for me, a phone call from Rian!” We hope so, too. Marta’s involvement could make sense since she wasn’t part of the Thrombey family, and got on especially well with Blanc in the original movie. Maybe Marta joins Blanc in his sleuthing or bankrolls his trip to Europe with her newly inherited fortune.

A Knives Out 2 trailer was released on Sept. 8, featuring the star-studded cast in action, puzzles, and a gorgeous location.

Naturally, news of a Knives Out sequel comes with questions about when people can actually watch it. Johnson and the cast began filming in June 2021 and wrapped that September, according to a tweet from Johnson . According to Variety, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF will take place from Sept. 8 to 18, and it’s unclear at the moment when exactly the Glass Onion film will premiere during the festival. Fans of the Knives Out film may recall that the first movie premiered at TIFF in 2019.

Johnson had also previously shared the film’s slated release period in June 2022; Glass Onion is slated to hit screens this holiday season, according to his tweet. Netflix confirmed that the film would make its streaming debut on the service on Dec. 23, 2022, and will also be screened in “select theaters on a date to be announced.” Fans who want to see Knives Out 2 on the big screen (and a bit sooner than late December) will be able to do so during Thanksgiving week. According to Variety , the movie will play exclusively in theaters from Nov. 23-29. This will make it the first Netflix movie to debut “across all three major U.S. theatrical chains” — AMC, Regal, and Cinemark. Tickets for the movie go on sale starting Oct. 10.

It seems that eager fans won’t have to wait long to see Glass Onion after Benoit Blanc makes his return in Canada.

The Knives Out Sequel Trades a Gothic Revival Mansion for a Billionaire’s Mediterranean Palace

Director Rian Johnson’s 2019 whodunit hit  Knives Out took place inside a quintessentially Gothic Revival mansion. Filmed at multiple homes in Massachusetts and on soundstages, it evoked the creepy autumnal aesthetic of many classic murder mystery stories of the past, like  Clue . 

The film’s sequel, which hit theaters briefly around Thanksgiving and will be available to stream on Netflix as of December 23, has a vastly different look. Filmed at Villa 20 at Amanzoe, a luxurious resort in Porto Heli, Greece—part of famous  Aman brand ’s high-end, high-design hotels—the film once again centers around eccentric detective Benoit Blanc (played by Daniel Craig ). This time, Blanc is invited to the home of billionaire Miles Bron ( Edward Norton ) as he hosts a murder mystery party for a group of A-list pals who call themselves “the disruptors.” Among the group are movie star Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), politician Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), and other such wacky characters.

Early in the film, the group pulls up to Bron’s private island aboard a 151-foot  yacht . (Named  Aquarius in real life, the boat is available to charter for $228,000 a week if you’re so inclined—and, fun fact, ship captain Ali Göksoy has a cameo in the film.) As they touch sand, Bron’s over-the-top home is revealed: a futuristic glass atrium plopped atop a sprawling Grecian villa with a grand outdoor staircase. It is his ode to his favorite bar, the Glass Onion, where he began the tech company that made him rich. This motif is also highly symbolic of his vapid personality. “It ties into Miles’s kind of fetishistic interest in himself and the metaphorical fact that when you look into Miles, there's really nothing there,” production designer Rick Heinrichs tells  AD . 

Villa 20 “was kind of a modernist take on classic Greek architecture. It had a very lovely indoor-outdoor feel to it, very pavilion-like,” says production designer Rick Heinrichs. Here, director Rian Johnson talks to Janelle Monáe on set.

The exterior of the atrium was added in post-production using visual effects, and the team chose this particular vacation villa because it looked to Heinrichs like it could handle the addition of a big glass orb. “That wasn’t something that you could just do on any structure. It’s not that it felt like it was begging for a glass onion stuck on the top of it—but it sort of was, actually. I mean, it turns out that it felt very appropriate that all of these villas ascend to the top pavilion and on top of that was this lovely flower-like structure.” We wonder what the designers of the home— the late  AD100 architect  Edward Tuttle, who was instrumental in creating the design of Aman properties all over the world, and Marios Angelopoulos—would say to this.

“The point of the glass art was trying to do something that was really quintessentially beautiful, almost Brancusi-like in a certain way. That would also be something that the camera could lens through and distort characters,” says Heinrichs.

The interiors at the villa were used to film guest rooms, but the main living area of Miles’s house was built on a soundstage in Serbia. For this set, Heinrichs and the prop department had to create an array of fine art, including a replica of the Mona Lisa which came courtesy of scenic artist James Gemmill. This job was made all the more difficult when a fire engulfed their prop house in Belgrade, causing a scramble to replace the many resin-glass sculptures that had been made for the film. “We immediately had to switch over to real glasswork and redid a lot of the things,” Heinrichs says. “It’s a movie called the Glass Onion, so we knew we couldn't disappoint in making things look like glass.”

Does Glass Onion Have a Release Date?

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery had its world premiere on September 10, 2022, at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film also screened on October 16, 2022, at the BFI London Film Festival. As to when the public will be able to see the sequel, the film will have a limited theatrical release from November 23 to November 29 in around 600 locations, including, in a first for Netflix, AMC Theatres. The film will then be released on Netflix worldwide on December 23, 2022. The Christmas weekend has previously been a heavy-hitter for Netflix with titles such as Don't Look Up , Bridgerton , The Witcher , and Bird Box topping the charts over the holidays, and Glass Onion will likely be no different.

What Is the Meaning Behind the Title Glass Onion?

Rian Johnson has announced that the sequel will be called Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery . The name takes inspiration from the 1968 Beatles song of the same name. Of course, the title also alludes to several locations in the film, but you'll just have to see the movie yourself to find out more.

Is Glass Onion a Direct Sequel to Knives Out?

Despite the fact that many Hollywood favorites were scene stealers in Knives Out (it was so great to see Ana de Armas , Chris Evans , Jamie Lee Curtis , Toni Collette , and more all together in the same feature film), Rian Johnson has confirmed that the sequel will have an entirely different narrative. In an interview with SiriusXM in February of last year, the director made an analogy to author Agatha Christie when explaining that not every murder mystery happens with the same scenario. He said that he would love to explore the genre with different characters, a new location, and another dynamic.

Who Is in the Glass Onion Cast ?

As mentioned before, most of the cast members in the first film will not return for Glass Onion . If they do make an appearance, it would be in a surprise cameo. Jamie Lee Curtis, who played the role of Linda Drysdale, even cleared the air about the Thrombey family returning to the screen with an Instagram post that alludes to them spending some time in therapy and far away from Benoit Blanc. Speaking of detective Benoit Blanc, the character is leading the cast of Glass Onion as he investigates another mystery. Netflix acquired the rights to the next franchise installment for over $450 million, and part of the deal was to keep Daniel Craig involved in the project.

Alongside the 007 alum, there will be new actors joining the cast for Glass Onion and many of them are just as stellar as the renowned ensemble in the previous film. Kate Hudson , popularly known for her role in Almost Famous , will be part of the sequel as Birdie Jay, a fashion designer. Other confirmed names are Leslie Odom Jr. as Lionel Toussaint, a scientist, Edward Norton as Miles Bron, a tech billionaire, Dave Bautista as Duke Cody, a YouTube celeb, Janelle Monae as Cassandra "Andi" Brand, a tech entrepreneur, Kathryn Hahn as Claire Debella, a governor from Connecticut running for Senate, Madelyn Cline as Whiskey, the girlfriend and assistant of Duke, and Jessica Henwick as Peg the assistant of Birdie. Ethan Hawke is also reportedly in the film in an undisclosed role after being spotted on set. Angela Lansbury and Stephen Sondheim will also make posthumous appearances in the highly anticipated sequel.

When and Where Did Glass Onion Film?

According to Rian Johnson's tweet, the Glass Onion production began on July 28 and was shot in Greece. Some of the pictures from the set that were released online were taken on the island of Spetches.

Filming in Greece wrapped in July 2021 and production officially ended in September of the same year.

Is There a Glass Onion Trailer?

Netflix released the first official trailer for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on September 8, 2022. The minute-and-a-half preview gives us our first real good look at the overall feel of the film but noticeably is slim on any plot details. The trailer has clips of partying, motorcycle chases, Dave Bautista in a Speedo firing a pistol, and an unusual-looking sliding puzzle. We also got a clip from the movie on September 24. Another teaser trailer came out on October 10, and it adds to the previous promo clips. Teaser #2 reveals that the characters were invited to a murder mystery party, hosted by their friend Miles Bron. According to his quote in the trailer, he will be murdered and those at the party must crack the code surrounding his suspicious death. The other shots presented in the clip hint that solving this challenge will be an eventful and instigating ride, especially for detective Blanc. After all, he even utters "this is truly delightful" once Bron explains the game to everyone seated at the dining table. Following that, viewers can spot a lot of cocktail drinks, a racing motorcycle, and a little snide mark about having a Google alert for the term "movies". Although the twists and turns are yet to be revealed, the sneak peek videos demonstrate that no one can be trusted, and no one can be saved from trouble. Check it out below:

The full trailer for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was released online on November 7, 2022, digging much deeper into the mystery of the film, but still remaining tight-lipped on whom the actual murder victim is, meaning that fans will have to wait until they watch the movie in theaters the week of Thanksgiving or from the comfort of their home over the Christmas holiday.

What Is the Plot of Glass Onion?

Even after the release of the first trailer, the plot for the sequel is still mostly unknown. What we do know is that Rian Johnson mentioned “multiple murders” on the same post he shared on Twitter during day 1 on set, so that might indicate that there will be a lot happening in Glass Onion .

Will There Be a Knives Out 3?

Normally, we don’t receive the good news prior to the release of the first sequel, but Netflix is full of surprises. The $450 million contract that they signed with Rian Johnson includes both Glass Onion and Knives Out 3 , for which Johnson will once again write the script and direct. Daniel Craig will also return for Knives Out 3 , although the second sequel is a separate production and is not being filmed back-to-back with Glass Onion . So we’ll have a bit of a wait for the third Knives Out movie. Johnson has also hinted that the franchise might even go beyond three , stating in an interview:

"As long as the two of us are still having fun, and as long as we can continue to make these truly new experiences each time, and find new ways to challenge ourselves. The second we feel like we’re repeating ourselves, or just turning a crank on a machine, we’ll stop. Because to me, the whole conception of this whole series is the same way Agatha Christie did it with her books – we’re doing something new and surprising every time."

How Are Early Reactions to Glass Onion ?

Considering how successful Knives Out was, a lot of people have been hoping to see if Glass Onion would match its predecessor. And now that we have some early reactions from critics who have seen the movie, it looks like those people are going to be more than happy. By all accounts, the movie is even better than the first one, with Collider's Ross Bonaime calling it “bigger, crazier,” and “even twistier”.

Anticipation for the sequel to Knives Out , Rian Johnson’s murder mystery hit starring Daniel Craig as the ostentatious private detective Benoit Blanc, is through the roof. Not least because of its reported ensemble: while no one from the first film is set to return save for Craig, the cast for the franchise’s sophomore effort is stacked to the rafters with wide-ranging talent.

Anyone looking for extra story clues should look to the Anthony Perkins and Stephen Sondheim-penned whodunnit The Last of Sheila , a film Johnson credits as being an inspiration for Glass Onion . Also set in the Mediterranean (but on a yacht ), The Last of Sheila follows a group of wealthy friends whose scandalous secrets are threatened to be exposed by a mystery game they play. Since Johnson confirmed the film's premise is “essentially how Glass Onion begins”, perhaps we'll see an innocent murder mystery game gone horrifically wrong. If Bodies Bodies Bodies can do it…

As for the film's title, the idea came to Johnson when he was looking for an “overwrought metaphor” for Benoit Blanc. (Think the doughnut scene from Knives Out .) “I literally got out my iPhone and searched my music library with the word glass,” the director told Netflix's Tudum . "There’s got to be some good glass songs. I was like, ‘Oh, is it a glass fortress? Is it a glass castle? Is it a glass man?’ The first thing that came up, because I’m a huge Beatles fan, is ‘Glass Onion.’” 

Who stars in Knives Out 2 ?

As many-a meme has suggested on Twitter since the first wave of cast additions were announced last year, the more pertinent question might be: who doesn’t star in Knives Out 2 ? If reports are to be believed, Johnson has managed to rustle together a truly all-star ensemble for Blanc’s second adventure.

Daniel Craig is a given, of course. According to Empire , one of the challenges of returning to the role was perfecting Blanc's notorious Southern drawl. “I’d forgotten the accent and I didn’t want to do a pastiche,” Craig said. “I wanted to make it as grounded and as anchored in reality as possible.” No stranger to a sequel, Craig also expanded on how his tenure at Bond helped him subvert expectations when all eyes are on you. “I’ve spent the past 15 years of my life trying to do that in a franchise, so I’m not afraid of it,” he explained. “If you’ve got the right people in the room and the right talent, then you can do it.”

We’ve also got Dave Bautista, the one-time WWE star now starring in titles like Blade Runner 2049 and, most recently, Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic Dune . He's playing YouTuber Duke Cody, who's come along with his girlfriend and assistant Whiskey (Madelyn Cline of Outer Banks ). Edward Norton leads the group as tech magnate Miles Byron, who's invited his old friends to his home in Greece for a murder mystery game. “The species that [Miles] is derived from will be instantly recognisable to a lot of people in our era of tech billionaires,” Rian Johnson told Empire , hinting that Norton's character won't be the most pleasant of hosts. He's joined by Leslie Odom Jr. as Toussaint, a scientist employed by Miles' company. 

Hot off her acclaimed role as Agatha Harkness in the Marvel miniseries WandaVision , p erennial U.S. rib-tickler Kathryn Hahn comes in as Claire Debella, a Connecticut politician running for a Senate seat. (She won her role over Zoom, according to an interview with MTV .) On the subject of Hahn's character, Johnson teased that Claire “pisses everyone off, and is trying to thread the needle in many different ways, in terms of her public persona and what she’s willing to compromise in order to stay in office.” Everyone’s favourite yearner, Ethan Hawke , is here too, as is Kate Hudson. Janelle Monáe subs in as tech entrepreneur Cassandra ‘Andi’ Brand, marking her first film appearance since 2020’s Antebellum . Rounding off the cast is up-and-comer Jessica Henwick , most recently seen in The Matrix Resurrections.

Aside from politicians, mask refuseniks and conspiracy theorists, has the pandemic made villains of any group more than wealthy travellers? From Kim K's but we tested! private island bash amidst surging cases worldwide, to the private jets that, quite literally, soared while travel for normal folk was grounded, as the rich escaped to their boltholes in Tuscany and Provence.

This hatred was gleefully captured in Mike White's HBO series The White Lotus , in which a group of shallow and self-serving American holidaymakers unloaded their baggage – literal and emotional – onto the staff of the island, the tension ratcheting to unbearable levels in the process. Now it looks like the theme for Knives Out 2 – the sequel to the box office hit from director Rian Johnson – might also be eat the rich, with a clip shared yesterday featuring the next instalment of characters in the whodunnit. The very short GIF, shared by Johnson on Twitter, sees the cast boarding a luxury yacht together, a location which, as we know from the first season of Succession, guarantees a happy ending.

Weary travellers, hello, Mr Blanc has been expecting you. Let us attempt to work out just who they are.

Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson in feather-print jumpsuit and huge sunglasses is giving strong mean rich woman vibes. Nobody wears a sixty inch beach chapeau and ends up the hero of the story, those are just the rules. We are predicting a cocktail with a non-biodegradable umbrella in her future.

Edward Norton

No sign of Edward Norton about to set sail. Intriguing. Could this mean he is part of Mr Blanc's investigative team, or that he joins the story later on? One thing we will say is that it doesn't feel creatively taxing to imagine Norton ending up either villain or villain-adjacent in the story. He just does that look of pinched anger so well. That said, if Knives Out taught us anything, it's that villains easily become heroes, and vice versa.

Dave Bautista

Leading the pack at the front of the gangway, has big Dave Bautista pushed his way to the front of the pack, or is he the organiser of this mysterious sojourn? Perhaps he just needs the loo.

Kathryn Hahn

We're calling it now, Kathryn Hahn wearing a visor will be the face that launches a thousand memes. Years of perfecting the kindly BFF on rom-coms and fresh from playing the deliciously dastardly witch Agatha in WandaVision, Hahn always, as they say, understands the assignment.

Ethan Hawke

Also absent from the boarding scene is Ethan Hawke, a casting which feels at odds with the roster of indie films he's made in recent years. Does that mean he'll be playing someone truly absurd and letting loose? We do hope so.

Leslie Odom Jr

Right in the middle of the group, and wearing a considerably cooler get-up than his fellow passengers, Odom Jr already has his whodunnit credentials after appearing in Murder on the Orient Express, in which he played a doctor who claimed responsibility for murdering someone despite it being an accident. Cue: Oooooos.

Jessica Henwick

To Hahn's right, wearing a bucket hat and vaping like she's got something to hide, Jessica Henwick feels like a twenty-something who has been dragged along against their will, and as we saw in Knives Out, it's the young ones you've got to look out for.

Janelle Monáe

Also missing from the shot, we'd like to hope Janelle Monáe could serve as the story's moral compass, as Ana De Armas did in the original film. Johnson has said however that the characters are "so different", so don't expect anyone to be like-for-like. The director has also said this cast is "so much more colourful", so fingers crossed for someone extremely flamboyant for Monáe to play.

Madelyn Cline

"I’m over the moon that Netflix has worked with AMC, Regal and Cinemark to get Glass Onion in theaters for this one of a kind sneak preview. These movies are made to thrill audiences, and I can’t wait to feel the energy of the crowd as they experience Glass Onion . Between this and the release on Netflix in December, I'm excited that audiences around the world will be able to enjoy the film!" director Rian Johnson said in a statement.

The movie was in theaters from November 23 through November 29, in approximately 600 theaters in the U.S. and a select few overseas. If you were not able to see the film in person: Do not fear, because the movie dropped on Netflix on December 23, 2022, just in time for the holidays.

Reportedly, Johnson is pushing for Glass Onion to return to theaters after it premieres on Netflix. "Once it's on the service it will be available to theaters and we're exploring what form that can take," Johnson said . "I'll take as much as I can possibly get. But a lot of that has to do with what the theaters are willing to do, what makes sense."

This won't be the last outing of Daniel Craig's southern detective Benoit Blanc, either; a third Knives Out film is already in the works at Netflix.

When the third film comes out, Johnson says he hopes it plays in movie theaters for longer. He shared, "We wanted it to do incredibly well for a lot of reasons. I guess for me, because I really want to show that this can happen and this can be a huge success. And that when it hits the service, people will still turn up and it will be huge on the service. That those two things can complement each other. Because I want more next time. I want more theaters. I want it for longer."

A least one mystery is easily solved.

When Knives Out landed in theaters in November 2019, it was regarded as a quirky oddity. This film was neither in the land of blockbuster superhero sequels and Oscar-bait films vying for awards. It was an old-fashioned murder mystery with an eccentric detective and a room full of suspects. But audiences loved it, and by the close of 2019, the movie had become the year’s surprise hit. So, when is Knives Out 2 coming? And what’s it about?

The sheer popularity of the first Knives Out film brought in $165 million domestically , and in February 2020, Lionsgate was quick to confirm a second film was on the way. But perhaps that confirmation came too quickly. On March 31, 2021, things changed when Netflix announced it had purchased the rights to Knives Out from producers Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman. Moreover, Netflix revealed it would make not one but two sequels. The blockbuster deal confirmed Johnson would return as writer and director, and Daniel Craig would also reprise his role as the Hercule Poirot-like Detective Benoit Blanc. It also turned the nascent film franchise into an all-but-guaranteed streaming hit.

With Knives Out 2 on the way, things are ramping up. Here’s everything known so far about the project:

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Release Date

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery premiered at TIFF on Sept. 10, 2022, and then had its red carpet premiere at the London Film Festival a month later. The film will open in select theaters one month before it arrives on Netflix, on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022, and will run for just one week in theaters before disappearing again. Tickets to this sneak preview are on sale at most local ticket retailers .

Glass Onion will then arrive on Netflix for everyone to stream just in time for the holiday break, on Dec. 23, 2022.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Sneak Peek

On Sept. 24, Netflix released a sneak peek at the new movie that showed off the titular glass onion. In the clip, Lionel (Leslie Odom Jr.), Duke (Dave Bautista), Birdie (Kate Hudson), and Claire (Kathryn Hahn) all successful solve an intricate puzzle sent to them by tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton). The prize? A large glass onion, and an invitation to board Bron’s yacht and solve the mystery of his murder.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Teaser

The official teaser for this movie is an absolute feast. Eight passengers are trapped on an island, and one, it appears, is a murderer. It looks a little like Agatha Christie’s, And Then There Were None, and if it turns out to be similar, fans can be assured of multiple fatalities coming this holiday season.

Some of the details should make fans should sit up and take notice. For example, this is not a family affair, unlike the first Knives Out . There are eight passengers aboard this ship, and it’s not immediately clear who knows who. And the boat is merely a transport — it’s not like Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile . The group heads to an island, and a fancy house, where they have no escape.

Previously, the first mini teaser for the Knives Out sequel arrived on June 13, 2022. Although it contained no footage of the new film, it did confirm the sequel’s title, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery .

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Cast

As previously noted, Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc and his Foghorn Leghorn accent are set to return for both films. Also, as confirmed at the London Film Festival, viewers will catch a glimpse of his boyfriend , who is apparently as secret A-list cameo.

But the movie’s greatness came from the ensemble cast that surrounded him, with luminaries like Don Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and the late Christopher Plummer. It also starred Marvel hero Chris Evans in a sweater , which became one of the film’s iconic images.

But with each successive film being a completely new case, that means only Craig will probably return. But not to worry about the new ensemble. Knives Out 2 is already finding new Marvel stars to help fill the roster. On May 10, 2021, Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista was the first significant name to join the new cast in an as-yet-undisclosed role. It is a re-team for Bautista and Craig, who were last seen together in the James Bond movie Spectre. There’s no word yet about what sort of knitwear Bautista’s character wears, but fans know he’s got an oversized sweater to fill.

And there’s at least one more sweater-worthy former Marvel star on the roster. On May 11, Deadline followed up with the reveal that Edward Norton is also joining the cast .

But wait, there’s more! Janelle Monae is also joining the party , according to Variety . The Hollywood Reporter also added Leslie Odom Jr. to the list of cast members joining the film. And in actors from one Netflix project shifting to another, actor Madelyn Cline of Outer Banks fame also signed on to be part of the ensemble .

And just when fans thought the cast couldn’t top that, Deadline reported Kathryn Hahn was also joining the crew . (I don’t know about you, but if Daniel Craig doesn’t break into “ Agatha All Along ,” I will be highly disappointed.) Deadline also reported Kate Hudson will be joining the cast as well . It will be a reunion of sorts for her and Hahn, who played BFFs back in the day in How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days . Perhaps this will be How To Murder Someone In 10 Days ? It depends on which of these cast members plays the one who turns up dead.

Finally, on June 15, 2021, Netflix revealed yet another franchise player as part of the new film: Jessica Henwick, who is known on HBO for Game of Thrones , Netflix for Iron Fist , and on the big screen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi . According to Deadline , the actor (who is also the new lead in The Matrix 4 ) “rounds out” the cast for the film, suggesting that perhaps there are limits in stuffing all of Hollywood into one two-hour mystery.

Since then, a few spoiler-free reviews have revealed a couple of surprises, including cameos by Ethan Hawke , Joseph Gordon-Levitt , Jackie Hoffman, and the late Stephen Sondheim in his last on-screen appearance.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Plot

The main thing viewers know about the new Knives Out films is they won’t be bringing back the Thrombeys and the Drysdales. Like any good old-school murder mystery series, each movie will have a standalone case featuring a brand-new, high-profile ensemble. Considering the Glass Onion cast is stacked, it’s doubtful anyone will miss the characters from the first film.

Here’s the logline for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , which, TBH, doesn’t give much away: “In the follow-up to Rian Johnson’s Knives Out , Detective Benoit Blanc travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects.”

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Characters

Though the plot is still being kept under wraps, Glass Onion ’s debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, does mean fans know who the characters are and who plays who. Here’s a rundown.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Photos

Netflix released a first look at the upcoming murder mystery on Aug. 22, 2022, and more photos when the trailer arrived, including this one of Daniel Craig in his Beniot Blanc attire.

Another shot shows Janelle Monáe sneaking down a corridor or perhaps hiding from a murderer.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Filming

Along with the announcement that two sequels were underway, Netflix revealed filming was slated to start at the end of June 2021 in Greece . Director Rian Johnson celebrated the beginning of filming with a tweet, thanking the local population for letting him do “all this murdering” on their shores.

“All this murdering?” Could Knives Out 2 have... multiple victims?

Leslie Odom Jr. hinted the sequel would be bigger and better than the first film. “‘Suspect everyone’ is what I can tell you. It’s going to be fun,” he said to ET. “ I think that the first movie... the success was unexpected, the Oscar nomination certainly, and people really took to it. So we want to up the ante and deliver something exciting and surprising for the fans.”

Filming went quickly on the six-week shoot, wrapping at the end of July 2021 .

The original Knives Out film is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Glass Onion will arrive on streaming in December 2022. Knives Out 3 does not yet have a release date.

I Can’t Wait to Be Absolutely Pummeled by Knives Out 2

My knives? Oh, they’re out. In March, Netflix revealed they’d be releasing not one but two sequels to the 2019 murder-mystery hit Knives Out . In addition to the return of Daniel Craig and his buck-wild accent , a handful of new cast members have been announced for the forthcoming movie: Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, and, most recently, Janelle Monáe and Kathryn Hahn . To which I say, gimme.

A release date for Knives Out 2 hasn’t been announced just yet, which I am taking personally. However, filming is slated to start June 28 in Greece. Consequently, I’ve decided I am slated to be in Greece at that time as well.

Director Rian Johnson hasn’t released any plot details about the sequel, which I’m temporarily calling 2 Knives 2 Out . But that will not stop me from wild story speculation, or giving Johnson some ideas he can have for the low, low price of giving me my murder movie sequel ASAP.

So, here you go Rian — do what you will with these Knives Out part deux ideas:

• Anya Taylor-Joy in a murdery, Thoroughbreds -esque role
• A battle royale of all the A24 men
• Patti Harrison as the owner of many exotic pets — maybe one “ dumb, fat-ass spaghetti ” snake inherits a yacht? (I’m just spitballing here.)
• Laura Dern doing TikTok dances
• Harry Styles and Lizzo as flirty detectives
• Riz Ahmed, Steven Yeun, and Daniel Kaluuya looking to camera and telling me I’m doing a good job
• A cameo by the discarded cardboard cut-out of Ana De Armas

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Ohio police officers in Wisconsin for the Republican National Convention shot and killed a man who was wielding two knives near the convention, Milwaukee’s police chief said Tuesday.

Five members of the Columbus, Ohio, police department fired on the man, who had a knife in each hand, refused police commands and charged at an unarmed man before police fired, Milwaukee Chief Jeffrey Norman said at a news conference. Two knives were recovered from the scene, the chief said.

Police released body camera footage that showed officers on bikes talking before one of them says, “He’s got a knife.”

Several officers then yell “Drop the knife!” as they run toward two men standing in a street. When the armed man moved toward the unarmed man, police fired their weapons.

“Someone’s life was in danger,” Norman said. “These officers, who were not from this area, took it upon themselves to act and save someone’s life today.”

Thousands of officers from multiple jurisdictions are in Milwaukee providing additional security for the convention that began Monday and concludes Thursday.

The shooting fueled anger from residents who questioned why out-of-state officers were in their neighborhood located about a mile from the convention site.

The Columbus Division of Police, as well as the chief of staff for Milwaukee’s mayor and a spokesperson for the convention’s joint command center, all said there was nothing to suggest the shooting was related to the convention itself.

A cousin and others identified the man killed as 43-year-old Samuel Sharpe.

Milwaukee residents and activists quickly converged on the site of the shooting, many of them expressing outrage about the involvement of a police department in town because of the convention.

About 100 people held a vigil and march without incident on Tuesday night, pausing for a moment of silence at the blood-stained spot where Sharpe was killed.

“They came into our community and shot down our family right here at a public park,” said Linda Sharpe, a cousin of the man who was killed. “What are you doing in our city, shooting people down?”

Linda Sharpe said her cousin lived in a tent encampment across the street from King Park, where the shooting occurred.

Residents said the encampment was a long-standing feature of the neighborhood, which is home to several social service clinics and a shelter. Some said Milwaukee police officers are familiar with many of those living in the tents and might have been able to deescalate the situation.

David Porter, who said he knew Samuel Sharpe and is also homeless, was angry that officers from outside of Milwaukee were in his neighborhood.

“If MPD would have been there, that man would still be alive right now,” Porter said, referring to Milwaukee police.

Norman, the Milwaukee chief, said 13 officers who were part of a bicycle patrol from Columbus were within their assigned zone having a meeting when they saw the altercation.

“The officers observed a subject armed with a knife in each hand, engaged in an altercation with another unarmed individual,” Norman said. They only fired after the armed man ignored multiple commands and moved toward the unarmed man, the chief said.

MILWAUKEE — Ohio police officers in Wisconsin for the Republican National Convention shot and killed a man who was wielding two knives near the convention, Milwaukee’s police chief said Tuesday.

Five members of the Columbus, Ohio, police department fired on the man, who had a knife in each hand, refused police commands and charged at an unarmed man before police fired, Milwaukee Chief Jeffrey Norman said at a news conference. Two knives were recovered from the scene, the chief said.

Police released body camera footage that showed officers on bikes talking before one of them says, “He’s got a knife.”

Several officers then yell “Drop the knife!” as they run toward two men standing in a street. When the armed man moved toward the unarmed man, police fired their weapons.

“Someone’s life was in danger,” Norman said. “These officers, who were not from this area, took it upon themselves to act and save someone’s life today.”

Thousands of officers from multiple jurisdictions are in Milwaukee providing additional security for the convention that began Monday and concludes Thursday.

The shooting fueled anger from residents who questioned why out-of-state officers were in their neighborhood located about a mile from the convention site.

The Columbus Division of Police, as well as the chief of staff for Milwaukee’s mayor and a spokesperson for the convention’s joint command center, all said there was nothing to suggest the shooting was related to the convention itself.

A cousin and others identified the man killed as 43-year-old Samuel Sharpe.

Milwaukee residents and activists quickly converged on the site of the shooting, many of them expressing outrage about the involvement of a police department in town because of the convention.

About 100 people held a vigil and march without incident on Tuesday night, pausing for a moment of silence at the blood-stained spot where Sharpe was killed.

“They came into our community and shot down our family right here at a public park,” said Linda Sharpe, a cousin of the man who was killed. “What are you doing in our city, shooting people down?”

Linda Sharpe said her cousin lived in a tent encampment across the street from King Park, where the shooting occurred.

Residents said the encampment was a long-standing feature of the neighborhood, which is home to several social service clinics and a shelter. Some said Milwaukee police officers are familiar with many of those living in the tents and might have been able to deescalate the situation.

David Porter, who said he knew Samuel Sharpe and is also homeless, was angry that officers from outside of Milwaukee were in his neighborhood.

“If MPD would have been there, that man would still be alive right now,” Porter said, referring to Milwaukee police.

Norman, the Milwaukee chief, said 13 officers who were part of a bicycle patrol from Columbus were within their assigned zone having a meeting when they saw the altercation.

“The officers observed a subject armed with a knife in each hand, engaged in an altercation with another unarmed individual,” Norman said. They only fired after the armed man ignored multiple commands and moved toward the unarmed man, the chief said.
