The Boats of the 2024 Bay Point Billfish Open Head Out Into The Gulf

P ANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Around 9 this morning, the Bay Point Billfish 80 boat fleet departed from the Point South Marina and headed on out, far into the Gulf of Mexico to begin their 2 to 3 days of deep sea fishing.

They’ll spend the next couple of days looking for tuna, wahoo, dolphin and of course, Blue Marlins. The prize pool all these crews are after, sitting at a nice one and a half million dollars, not too bad.

The Bay Point Billfish has been ran for 37 years now, the 80 boat fleet is the largest fleet to ever compete in any of them. The first one had just 58.

One of the crews competing this week, out of Albany, Georgia, says this Open happens to be their first tournament during this summer, and they’re super excited.

“Oh yeah, we’re ready to get out there. we are excited. We are pumped up, kind of going over the boat, checking to make sure we’ve got everything. Just ready to get off and get started. I mean, it’s all about fun, we’re here for fun. we hope we can win the big fish, that’s what everybody wants to do but at the end of the day we want to have fun. So, we’re going to sleep as much as we want, eat as much as we want fish as much as we want. We just want to have fun, that’s what we’re really focused on doing, just having fun”, said “Aussie Rules” Angler Brandon Ellerbee.

The team also feels their commraderie will be an advantage this week!

“The crew on this boat, they’re the best of the best. We fished with them, I think this is our second year, this is our first year on “Aussie Rules” but last year we fished “Harvest Time” but a lot of the same deckhands, a lot if the same captains. They’re the best of the best and we enjoy it. They’re good people and that’s what we enjoy doing, we enjoy being around people like that”, said Ellerbee.

The scales open up tomorrow and then reopen Saturday.

The area of the Central and South American nation of Panama is 75,517 square kilometers (29,208 square miles). The Pacific and Caribbean oceans, which are separated by barely 50 miles at their narrowest point, flank it. The 2.7 million Panamanians speak Spanish as their mother tongue, but English is also widely spoken. Since 1904, the U.S. dollar has been accepted as legal tender in Panama, which is also a stable, democratic, and independent Republic. All major credit cards are accepted at the numerous ATMs located around the country. Panama is home to the fifth-largest international banking hub in the world. You need a current passport, and your airline may be able to give you a 90-day tourist card.

Major North and South American cities have direct flights to Panama’s Tocumen International Airport. The travel time to Miami is two hours. His hurricane-free country has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons, and European aircraft fly across it. From the middle of December through May, the frigid trade winds blow. Weak winds and infrequent precipitation characterize the remaining months of the year. The steady temperature fluctuates between 80 and 90 °F (25 to 30 °C).

After arriving in Panama, fly to Porvenier quickly on a small aircraft. Your crew will welcome you and take you back to your charter yacht on the tender. Onboard, savor a relaxing lunch before exploring the charming Nalunega. A quick excursion to the Chichime Cays gives plenty of time to observe the sunset over Panama’s highlands.

Spend the morning snorkeling in the pristine seas before grudgingly making your way back to the boat for lunch. Your captain will maneuver the boat to the following anchorage, Holandes Cays, while you enjoy an outdoor meal on the covered deck. The thought of diving back into the sea or taking a stroll down the white sand beach while unwinding under a coconut palm is almost too tempting to resist.

Enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee while you watch the sun rise over a picture-perfect tropical island. Leave for the Coco Bandero Cays after breakfast. A beach BBQ will serve as lunch, and afterwards you can take a sleep in a hammock hung between two palm palms. Afterward, you may go swimming or kayaking before sunset cocktails.

As you move toward Alitupu, which is close to the mainland, you can hear the calm hum of the engine. Discover the neighboring river while taking in the dense canopy of the rainforest and the countless bird species that call it home.

Leave Nurdupu’s tranquil perfection for the busier island of Rio Diablo. Lunch in town to sample regional food and take advantage of the welcoming Kuna Indians’ hospitality. With its expansive stands of bamboo and mango trees, the Rio Nasadi will be gently explored in the afternoon.

An early start for Ustupu, where the largest community in San Blas, with 8,000 residents, is located! However, there is still time to make one final quick stop to enjoy a swim in the gin-clear waters before bathing and making the short trek to the airport to catch your flight back to civilisation. You are aware that you must go back because there are still hundreds of islands to discover. The journey will continue.

CAPTAIN Marcos Gamboa CHIEF STEWARDESS HELENA VALING Helena was born in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. She lived 10 years in Finland and graduated from Finnish College of Beauty Therapists. Helena’s love of travelling naturally drew her towards the yachting industry where she began working on board a 36m sailing yacht. It was evident to her from the beginning that a career in yachting was her calling. As a qualified beautician, Helena understands the importance of making guests feel relaxed and well-cared for and she uses this in every aspect of her job whether in cleaning, service or simply ensuring the children are thoroughly enjoying themselves. Helena enjoys staying active and can be found participating in a variety of sports whenever she can. FIRST MATE SERGIU SCUTARU Sergiu grew up in a small city in North of Romania, not far away from Transylvania's vampires. After completing 4 years in Technical University of Iasi he graduated with a diploma in Civil Construction Engineering. Passion for sea and achieving more personal experience came as a challenge and since 2014 he is a seafarer. Since then he completed one Atlantic crossing and navigated around Mediterranean Sea, Caribbean, Bahamas, Gulf of Mexico and USA totaling 65.000+ nautical miles and over 500 days at actual sea. He worked on different size vessels with lenghts between 40-65 meters, having the honor to work for high profile guests as Michael Jordan, Damian Marley, Antonio Banderas, Vin Diesel, Sir Richard Cliff, Sergio Perez, Evander Hollifield, Prince and Princess of Monaco. Sergiu currently holds a MCA/RYA Master 200GT Commercial Endorsement and he is working towards becoming a Captain in the future.He enjoys exploring the outdoors especially mountains, fishing enthusiast, boxing and has a huge passion for cars. ENGINEER VICTOR DE LEON Victor comes from the tropical country of Panama, more exactly from the warm waters of Bocas Del Toro. I attended the military academy in Lima, Peru from ages 15 to 18. This was the beginning of a passionate career for engineering, as the last year in the military academy he decided to take diesel mechanics. Furthering, he was briefly introduced to the yachting industry, place where he decided to pursue a full engineering career and now 9 years later, after lots of study and work he has the pleasure to serve M/Y Mamma Mia as the Chief Engineer, making sure that every system is well maintained and looked after for the proper function of the vessel. His passions are Guitar playing, building machines & gadgets, overhauling engines, business, and economy. DECKHAND LIAM TATE Liam was born and raised in the heart of South Africa, a beautiful city called Cape Town where we take pride in one of our natural wonders of the world, Table mountain. After school he joined a gap year program where he toured throughout South Africa embarking on so many adventures such as hiking the fish river canyon, the knysna forest ,the great Karoo as well as spending a month doing all the cliff jumps along the west coast and completing a few courses along the way which he is very proud of. During his time in lockdown he realized that being on the move and experiencing new things was my passion so he decided to look into yachting and the rest was history, he completed his courses and joined his first yacht and was part of a 9 month refit where he had expanded his knowledge and developed a great character and a sense of humor along the way. Beryl becomes 'extremely dangerous' Category 4 hurricane expected to bring life-threatening conditions to Caribbean

Hurricane Beryl has become an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm as it inches closer to the Windward Islands, bringing life-threatening winds and storm surge to the Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center said Sunday.

Beryl expanded its strength for two days, reaching Category 4 strength on a scale of 5 on Sunday before leveling off, the center said in a late-afternoon advisory.

With sustained winds of 130 mph, the storm was likely to be a destructive force through the early week as it aimed for a possible clash with Mexico's Yucatán peninsula around next weekend, according to the hurricane center.

"Fluctuations in strength are common in major hurricanes in conducive environments, and it is expected that Beryl will also fluctuate in strength for the next day or so," the center said in a separate forecast discussion. "There is high confidence that Beryl will remain an extremely dangerous hurricane through landfall in the Windward Islands."

Its center is expected to move across the Windward Islands early Monday, with hurricane conditions, including heavy rain, expected Sunday evening, the agency said.

The Windward Islands include St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Martinique. As of Sunday night, Beryl was about 200 miles southeast of Barbados with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. It was moving northwest at around 18 mph.

A U.S. hurricane warning is in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Tobago, where hurricane conditions are possible starting early Monday.

The government of Barbados began opening emergency shelters Sunday evening and ordered all businesses to close by 7 p.m. The Barbados Water Authority asked residents to store potable water as it would shut down water lines across the island Sunday night as a precaution, according to a statement.

The Barbados government said the center of the hurricane would travel 75 to 80 miles south of Barbados sometime Monday morning.

Government forecasters said the hurricane could pulse with renewed strength as it passes beneath Barbados, with winds associated with the storm projected to reach near 145 mph.

Flash flooding and hurricane-force winds are likely, the government said. Barbados officials also warned of a low pressure system behind Beryl that could become a tropical depression and affect the country Wednesday if it continues apace.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Martinique, and tropical storm watches are in effect for Dominica and Trinidad, which could all experience tropical storm conditions Sunday night.

“Potentially catastrophic wind damage is expected where the eyewall of Beryl moves through portions of the Windward Islands, with the highest risk of the core in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada,” the hurricane center said.

Life-threatening storm surges may raise water levels by 6 to 9 feet above normal tide levels in the hurricane watch areas and bring destructive waves to the coast.

Three to 6 inches of rain is possible across Barbados and the Windward Islands on Sunday into Monday, which may cause flooding in some areas. Up to 10 inches of rain is possible in some areas, especially in the Grenadines.

St. Lucia Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced a national shutdown as a result of the hurricane warning that will go into effect Sunday 8:30 p.m. local time. He did not say when it will be lifted. Schools will remain closed Monday, and “employers are expected to cooperate,” he said.

In a Facebook post, the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority asked the public to “remain indoors and away from glass windows once tropical hurricane-force winds affect the area.”

“All persons should avoid entering the ocean. Failure to comply with this request puts human lives at risk, including those of our first responders,” the board said. The board also encouraged tourists to contact their airlines to schedule flights home.

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has canceled all police leave in preparation for Beryl.

“All officers are requested to report to the nearest police station by 6:00 p.m. today, Sunday, June 30, 2024,” it s a id on Fa cebook .

In Grenada, a state of emergency will go into effect at 7 p.m. Sunday and remain for a week, “unless earlier revoked,” Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said at a briefing.

The country’s National Disaster Management Agency encouraged the public to secure three days of nonperishable food and water as Beryl makes impact. Those in areas susceptible to storm surge were encouraged to move to one of the shelters opened across Grenada.

Mitchell warned the public that “this is not a drill.”

“We need to be calm, we need to pray, but most importantly we need to prepare,” Mitchell said.

All police leave has also been canceled in Grenada, and officers were asked to return to work, according to Mitchell.
