European Yacht of the Year Award

SELECTION OF THE 2024 WINNERS        At the European Yacht of the Year Award we feel that the first big win is to make the nomination. So here you have the 21  most interesting new sailboats of this model year according to the 12 strong j ury . Other than in previous years we haven’t grouped them into categories because there are more and more crossover concepts that make it hard to characterize a boat without having experienced it on the water. So this time we first do the sailing and then we assign boats to their respective class.

The contestants for the European Yacht of the Year Award 2024 are:

 ● Arcona 50  ● Bavaria C46  ● Bestevaer 36  ● Cape Cod 767  ● Contest  ● Dufour 41  ● Flaar 24  ● Hanse 410  ● HH44 Catamaran     ● Elan Impression 43  ● Jeanneau Yachts 55  ● Maxus 35  ● Neel 52  ● Oceanis 37.1  ● Outremer 37.1  ● Pointer 30  ● RM 1380           ● Saffier SE 24 LITE  ● Shogun 43  ● Sun Fast 30 OD  ● XC 47

To be among the finalists is already a great achievement. But of course we don’t stop here. Next up are the seatrials which are mandatory for all the finalists. They take place in La Rochelle mid September and in Port Ginesta near Barcelona mid October. After that the jury members do thorough debriefings, dive deep down into the specs and the data from the tests, they spend hour after hour debating before the verdict is reached in January.

The final announcement of this year’s winners will take place during the Flagship-Night on the first evening of boot Düsseldorf   (20.-28.01.2024).

The Hanse 460 has been named “European Yacht of the Year 2022” by an international jury of experts. Due to corona, the award ceremony was held online again this year, as the water sports show boot Düsseldorf, where the awards are traditionally presented at the flagship gala, had to be cancelled once more.

In the Family Cruiser category, the Hanse 460 prevailed against renowned competitors such as the Dufour 470 or the Oceanis 34, and was thus able to claim the world’s most important award in the sailboat industry.

In addition to the vote of the twelve-member jury, consisting of the editors-in-chief of the most important European sailing magazines, the Hanse 460 also clearly won the readers’ vote of the German sailing magazine Yacht.

Jury reviews

Toby Hodges, Yachting World – Great Britain: “The Hanse 460 convinces with attractive aesthetics, offers enjoyable sailing and the feeling of an even bigger yacht.”

Pasi Nuutinen, Vene – Finland: “Old Hanse values have been preserved, plus decent quality and value for money.”

Andreas Unger, Product Manager Hanse: “We are incredibly proud to have brought the Oscar of the sailing industry back to Greifswald. The entire team has worked passionately on the boat and fought for this success. Our decision to work with the designers from Berret-Racoupeau for the first time has been proven absolutely right. This success, also in terms of sales figures, is overwhelming.”

The Hanse 460 has been named European Yacht of the Year 2022

The Hanse 460 combines radically innovative design with traditional Hanse values such as fast cruising and easy sailing. The newly developed, hydrodynamic hull manages the balancing act between a narrow waterline, for better hull speed, and a wide hull above the waterline with chines fore and aft, giving the greatest possible interior space.

The new deck design has 14 opening hatches and eight opening windows to offer maximum light and ventilation below deck.

Generous sail areas of 114sqm upwind and 234sqm downwind point to the enormous performance potential of the Hanse 460. The standard bowsprit with integrated anchor arm serves as a forward tack point for headsail and gennaker and can take a second forestay for genoa or reacher.

No fewer than 48 layout combinations give customers every opportunity to configure their Hanse 460 to suit their needs.

By Nina Done   22 May 2022

The 17th edition of the World Superyacht Awards took place in the heart of London over the weekend and saw an impressive selection of charter yachts win a coveted Neptune trophy during the exclusive prize-giving ceremony.

The annual black-tie gala dinner event celebrates the world’s finest superyachts of the year, recognising and rewarding ‘ingenuity and craftsmanship’ in the design, engineering and construction of the luxury yachts.

World Superyacht Awards ceremony

With an independent judging panel made up of experienced superyacht owners, the World Superyacht Awards are the only peer-reviewed yachting awards in the world, earning the industry-recognised ceremony with an ‘unmatched level of credibility and gravitas’, not to mention increasing brand awareness and exposure for the winning yachts and their teams.

Hosted at the Guildhall Art Gallery in the centre of London's Square Mile, the elite of the superyacht world, owners and industry leaders gathered to celebrate this year’s event where 15 Neptunes were up for grabs, including the coveted Motor Yacht of the Year and Sailing Yacht of the Year awards.

In an event that saw 59 nominees fight it out across 15 categories, charter yachts were awarded trophies in 5 of the categories. Here are the charter yachts that picked up a trophy at this year’s World Superyacht Awards;

Winner: Best Rebuilt Yacht

This graceful iconic vessel is the oldest charter yacht in the fleet, renowned as the beloved yacht of Hollywood’s golden couple Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who hosted a raft of luminaries on board during the height of their fame.

Charter yacht KALIZMA

Rebuilt in 2021, the 50m (161ft) classic yacht KALIZMA has been transformed and modernized whilst still retaining the classic elements of her original build. The yacht provides ample opportunity to relax and unwind with an array of convivial social and dining areas, including her elegant upper deck, where guests can relax on sumptuous loungers or enjoy a cocktail at the bar. There is a further bank of sun pads on her bow, as well as an alfresco dining set up with yet more loungers on her aft deck. All her cabins are generously proportioned with an en suite, while her interior living areas pay homage to her fascinatingly rich storied history.

Originally built in 1906, her extensive rebuild has clearly impressed the judges, who will have appreciated the unique history of the yacht, having survived wars and plagues, has not been obliterated; rather celebrated and elevated into the elegant classic yacht we see today.

yacht of the year 2022

Winner: Semi-Displacement or Planing Motor Yachts - 35m to 39.9m

Already boasting the accolade as the winner of the Best Innovation trophy in her category at the World Superyacht Awards in 2021, the striking 37m (121ft) Motopanfilo yacht KOJU from Benetti made her grand debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival later that year. And she clearly made an impression.

Charter yacht KOJU

Benetti revealed their design brief was a reinterpretation of their classic builds, which has culminated in an elegantly, retro-styled modern yacht that features all of the luxe amenities you would expect of a superyacht. These include a forward pool lounge replete with plush sunpads, a unique top deck observation area offering incredible 380-degree views and a delightful Hamptons-style beach club – shaded by an innovative retractable canopy – providing a waterside haven to relax, as well as offering direct access to the sea.

She left a strong impression on the judges with her unique build that includes bright living spaces and spacious sundeck for her size.

With design elements that echo the classic Benetti builds of the 1960s, she left a strong impression on the judges with her unique build that includes bright living spaces and spacious sundeck for her size.

yacht of the year 2022

Winner: Displacement Motor Yachts below 499GT - 30m to 44.9m

Delivered in 2021 by the Italian yard Rosetti as part of their EXP series, the 38m (125ft) yacht EMOCEAN is their first foray into explorer-type superyachts. Billed by the yard as “not your typical explorer yacht ”, they worked in close collaboration with an experienced owner to produce the final custom yacht that debuted at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2021.

Charter yacht EMOCEAN

Showcasing a range of innovative features, her layout has been ingeniously designed to create a harmonious connection between her indoor and outdoor spaces.

The judging panel will undoubtedly have been swayed by this clever use of space, while never feeling cluttered. Indeed, EMOCEAN’s neutral interiors enhance this overall sense of openness. They will have also been impressed by the number of social areas on board, in particular her sun deck sporting a Jacuzzi pool with a waterfall feature. There is also a custom-designed wine cellar boasting a 150-bottle capacity that neatly divides the Owner’s stateroom and the main guest area.

Winner: Displacement Motor Yachts Between 1000GT and 1499GT

Heralding one of Benetti's largest custom yachts to date, the six-deck 65.4m (214.7ft) superyacht TRIUMPH is truly something to behold, and clearly caught the attention of the judges.

Charter yacht TRIUMPH

Showcasing elegant ocean-inspired interiors penned by Green & Mingarelli Design in collaboration with Benetti's in-house design team, she offers a wealth of crowd-pleasing features from bow to stern, including a sprawling top deck and range of wellness facilities, from a well-equipped gymnasium and sauna to a indulgent massage treatment room. She also boasts a vast beach club that ticks all the boxes as a supreme waterside haven.

The judges concluded that this superbly proportioned yacht offers the ultimate in lounging and dining over four levels

The 40m yacht boasts a raft of eco-credentials which made her stand out from the crowd, including an electric propulsion system that draws on a lithium-ion battery bank, perfect not only for silent overnight passages, but also for protecting precious marine environments.

She also managed to scoop up the trophy in her category: Sailing Yachts 30m to 39.99m – making it a remarkably successful night all round.

It involves shortlisting the best annual prospects, typically into five separate categories, before all 12 jury members trial each yacht to elect the winners. The trials were held in La Rochelle and Port Ginesta, Barcelona during the autumn.

Normally the awards would be presented at the Dusseldorf Boat Show, but for the second year running, this was cancelled because of COVID, hence a virtual presentation instead. As part of the creation of new types of catamaran made in Occitanie, an audacious choice of ecological innovation has been selected in partnership with the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France). It’s a question of combining ecological performance in terms of minimizing the environmental footprint and structural resistance, and this, in a global approach of circular economy on all parts of the boat. To do this, and in connection with the IMT MINES ALES, Windelo has relied on the use of secondary raw materials, competitive  virgin petroleum-based materials, that fully comply with the specifications in terms of mechanical performance. This is a real first step to the development of a 2.0 fleet ships fully integrated into the challenges and ecological challenges of the 21st century.

Associated with an ecological approach of circular economy integrating a not insignificant part of competitive secondary raw materials from virgin materials, the architectural design and the resistance of materials on the new Windelo catamarans are mechanically tested in the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France) in connection with the architects and designers of the project. The design of the ship, and in particular the hulls and bows, go through a search for efficient structuring and arranging of materials composing it, combined with a mechanically optimized geometrical assembly. To this end, specific test developments, such as the study of distortion of the structure and of the panels constituating the hull of the ship, are studied by digital image correlation techniques coupled with standardized strength tests.

Founder of Catana

“The cruising program for this new boat raises the question of the antagonism between the search for performance under sail and the pleasure of navigation, and the development of pleasant living spaces. The originality of the answer is provided here in the arrangement of the cockpit bringing together the helm and maneuvers to the center of the boat and in the arrangement of living space that occupies the rear of the nacelle.

Just behind the mast the outer cockpit offers two helm stations protected from the wind and spray, a beautiful view of the sails and bows, and allows to have all the maneuvers on hand while limiting the needs to circulate on the bridge. Out of navigation, the cockpit can be more widely protected from the outside and open to the rear space.

Fully opened behind this cockpit, we have not developed two living spaces duplicating one inside the other but a single large space which is ajustable. We have focused our efforts on the geometry of the material and visual limits of this space and on the opening kinematics of the bays. Once opened, they “disappear” to transform the interior into an exterior. The generosity of these openings also allows to modulate the ventilation of this space by playing on a wide range of opening on its four sides

This work on the modularity and the disappearance of limits is found at the extreme rear of the nacelle, with an articulated platform to the davits transforming it into a floor when anchored, and in the rear cabins, whose wide turning porthole eliminates the angle between side plating and back side. The cabin space is therefore generous despite the relative narrowness of the hulls.

All these choices allow us to combine a contained hold of the nacelle, pledge control of the weight estimate, to a generous living space, with a central part given to navigation and maneuvering. The slenderness of the forward spikes, the significant free height under the platform, and the attention paid to the centering of the masses, complete the marine qualities expected for an offshore navigation program.

The other originality of the project brought by this new construction site is in the approach of “eco-design” on materials and construction. Strongly limiting the use of molds, the latter brings a greater margin of freedom in the variations and evolutions of the boats thus conceived. ”

Who could know if it is the father or the son who is the most  passionate? It doesn’t matter. The important thing  is to write an innovative project within a family culture, for today and for generations to come. Hand over the guiding light, this is Olivier Kauffmann’s will. “At first I wanted to make my own boat, for me and my family; go on trip around the world living on a  efficient and pleasant catamaran. I dreamed of a new quality of space. Today, the dream has matured, and I want to share it with the great family of sailors. »

Windelo is the desire to expose us to something new, innovative, powerful, bigger than oneself. To seek innovations on materials, techniques of industrialization and uses to impulse a new economic reality. “We want to be part of this transformation related to the respect of our environment, it is for us, essential to work in this respect of men and nature. Men are at the heart of the project with the desire to recruit and form a passionate team, surrounded by experts recognized as the best in their field.

And the innovation doesn’t stop here, because the constructive process makes it possible to envisage fast evolutions from one boat to another while remaining well priced. An ambitious and respectful project ; Welcome to the Windelo adventure.

The 2022 World Superyacht Awards winners revealed.

The winners of the 2022 World Superyacht Awards have been revealed . From the newly crowned Motor Yacht of the Year to the prestigious Voyager’s Award, find out which yachts scooped this year’s coveted Neptunes trophies.

The World Superyacht Awards recognise the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the most remarkable luxury yachts from across the world. The globally acclaimed event, known for its credibility and prestige, is distinguished from all other yacht awards thanks to a judging panel comprising current and former superyacht owners.

QUARTET OF WORLD SUPERYACHT AWARDS: MUSIC TO THE EARS FOR FEADSHIP

Feadship won four prestigious prizes at the 2022 BOAT International World superyacht Awards (WSA) on Saturday 21 May. VIVA, Somnium and Vanish triumphed in their respective categories, with VIVA taking home the ultimate accolade by winning the Motoryacht of the Year award.

In its 17-year history, several cities have hosted the World superyacht Awards, including Amsterdam, Istanbul, Florence and Monaco, but this year the ceremony has returned to London. The gala ceremony to announce the winners of the 2022 Neptune trophies was held in front of a live audience at the historical Guildhall and completely sold out. As always, the winners were decided upon solely by a panel of superyacht owners, making the prizes even more appreciated by their industry peers.

Jan-Bart Verkuyl – Feadship Director / CEO Royal Van Lent Shipyard, who attended the ceremony, said that “receiving four awards including Motoryacht of the Year is another great recognition for the passion of our Feadship craftsmen and the teamwork of all parties involved. We would like to thank the owners of VIVA, Somnium and Vanish, who made this possible.” Consistency in all aspects Many factors influenced the judges’ decision, but it was Viva’s consistency in all aspects that made her a winner by a large margin of the 2002 Motoryacht of the Year award. “Such allround excellence”, the judges felt, “was largely due to the detailed consideration given to every aspect of the vessel.

The owner’s knowledge and complete involvement with specifications also paid dividends. As a result, this yacht has it all, from an attractive exterior design with superb deck spaces to an enviable beach club and a modern interior by Peter Marino that connects with the outside through huge windows, plus a general arrangement plan entirely suited to the needs of the owner, guests and crew. Viva also lacks nothing on the technical and operational side”. The judges were equally impressed by “her sustainably minded power and propulsion system, optimal technical areas, a practical tender garage, excellent living and working facilities for her crew, and a superlative quality”. VIVA is also the winner of the Displacement Motoryachts between 2,000GT and above category.

Somnium yacht: Excellent ballance

The next prize for Feadship was in the Displacement Motoryachts between 500GT and 999GT category in which the voting the 55.20-metre Somnium was revealed as the winner. Unlike the majority of boats in this size range, the judges noted that “Somnium is a full custom yacht built for an exacting owner who made bi-weekly visits to the shipyard throughout the design and build process”. The judges praised her excellent balance between the calmly decorated facilities for the owner and his guests – all perfectly tailored to the needs of the family.

Vanish yacht

Another coveted award came in the Displacement Motoryachts between 1,500GT and 1,999GT category. Vanish superyacht scored “particularly highly for her appearance and interior layout” which are from the drawing boards of Harrison Eidsgaard Design. The judges also were impressed by “the extremely high quality of build seen throughout the yacht”. Overall, the jury felt, Vanish “is not a revolutionary yacht, but one that completely fulfils her owner’s requirements, offers delightful interior and exterior spaces, and is guaranteed to turn heads wherever she goes”

In selecting the winner of the coveted Motor Yacht of the Year award, the judges were faced with the task of choosing a single yacht from the nine individual winners of the Semi-Displacement and Displacement Motor Yacht classes. After lengthy debate, the secret ballot revealed Viva to be the winner by a large margin and while many factors influenced this decision, it was Viva’s consistency in all aspects of the judgement that took her into the lead. Such all-round excellence, the judges felt, was largely due to the detailed consideration given to every aspect of the vessel during her 12-year gestation period, a time when the owner’s knowledge and complete involvement with specifications paid dividends. As a result, this yacht has it all, from an attractive exterior design with superb deck spaces to an enviable beach club and a modern interior that connects with the outside through huge windows, plus a general arrangement plan entirely suited to the needs of the owner, guests and crew. Viva also lacks nothing on the technical and operational side. Her sustainably-minded power and propulsion system, optimal technical areas, a practical tender garage, excellent living and working facilities for her crew, and a superlative quality of build sets her apart as a very special yacht and a worthy winner of the 2022 Motor Yacht of the Year Award.

4 best bluewater cruisers of 2022

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 28, 2022

Thinking of heading off on a world-girdling cruise or just want to cross oceans in style? Here's the best bluewater cruisers of 2022 that will help you se off on a new life at sea

yacht of the year 2022

The results are in from the European Yacht of the Year Awards as the judges have announced their top four bluewater cruisers of 2022.

The European Yacht of the Year awards are well regarded as the definitive yacht awards in the world a variety of categories are judged by the panel from best luxury cruisers , to best family cruisers to performance yachts .

But for those looking to liveaboard their yacht, making plans to do some ocean crossings, or looking to undertake some long distance passage making, the best bluewater cruisers will likely be the category that draws the eye.

There were a brilliantly diverse and interesting collection of new designs for this category – a celebration of French ingenuity. For those planning long term cruising, would you choose a robust aluminium build for higher latitudes sailing, shoal draught to tuck into the shallows (a mix of both?), sustainable living or reliable comfort, or the ability to log sustained high speeds to outrun weather systems? This selection gives you all those choices and more.

Best bluewater cruisers of 2022

The new flagship Allures 51.9, for example, is a no-nonsense adventure cruising design built and finished to a high standard. It retains Allures’ niche of using aluminium hulls with glassfibre decks and superstructures, which, the yard maintains, gives the optimum combination of least maintenance and less weight higher up. Priorities for this design were a full beam aft cabin and a spacious, long cockpit. Both are excellent, with the latter, at 6m long, offering formidable social, sailing and aft deck zones.

It likes some breeze to come to life on the wheel, but I appreciate that it’s designed to take up to five tonnes payload. And I like the ease with which you can change gears using the furling headsails and the positioning of the powerful Andersen winches inboard. The arch is standard and comes with a textile sprayhood or hard bimini.

Below decks you’ll find abundant headroom and natural light, a deep U-shape galley and cavernous stowage. For those who like the layout of the Amel 50 but would prefer aluminium or shoal draught, look no further.

Allures 51.9 price: €766,000

The Ovni 370 is another cunning new aluminum centreboard offering, a true deck saloon cruiser for two. The designers say the biggest challenge was to create a Category A ocean going yacht at this size with a lifting keel, hence the hull had to be very stable.

Enjoyable to helm, it has a practical, deep cockpit behind a large sprayhood, which can link to the bimini on the arch. Many of its most appealing features lie in the bright, light, contemporary, clever, voluminous interior, which has good stowage and tankage allocation. There’s also a practical navstation, a large workroom and a vast separate shower. I particularly like the convertible saloom, which can double as a large secure daybed or pilot berth.

Potentially the least expensive Category A lift keel boat available, the Ovni will get you dreaming of remote places again.

Ovni 370 price: €282,080

yacht of the year 2022

There’s no shortage of spirit in the Windelo 50. We gave this a sustainability award after it’s founders spent two years researching environmentally-friendly composite materials, developing an eco-composite of basalt fibre and recycled PET foam so it could build boats that halve the environmental impact of standard glassfibre yachts.

The Windelo 50 is an intriguing package – from the styling, modular interior and novel layout to the solar field on the roof and the standard electric propulsion, it is completely fresh.

Windelo 50 price: €795,000

Best bluewater cruiser of 2022 – Outremer 55

I would argue that this is the most successful new production yacht on the market. Well over 50 have already sold (an equipped model typically costs €1.6m) – and I can understand why. After all, were money no object, I had this design earmarked as the new yacht I would most likely choose for a world trip.

Indeed 55 number one Sanya, was fully equipped for a family’s world cruise, and left during our stay for the Grand Large Odyssey tour. Whereas we sailed Magic Kili, which was tricked up with performance options, including foam-cored deckheads and supports, carbon crossbeam and bulkheads, and synthetic rigging.

At rest, these are enticing space ships. Taking one out to sea is another matter though. These are speed machines with the size, scale and loads to be rightly weary of. Last month Nikki Henderson wrote a feature for us about how to manage a new breed of performance cruising cats just like this and how she coaches new owners. I could not think of wiser money spent for those who do not have ample multihull sailing experience.

Under sail, the most fun was obviously reserved for the reaching leg under asymmetric, where we clocked between 11-16 knots in 15-16 knots wind. But it was the stability and of those sustained low teen speeds which really hit home  – passagemaking where you really cover miles.

Key features include the swing helms, which give you views from outboard, over the coachroof or from a protected position in the cockpit through the coachroof windows, and the vast island in the galley, which is key to an open plan main living area. It helps provide cavernous stowage and acts as the heart of the entertaining space as it would in a modern home. As Danish judge Morten Brandt-Rasmussen comments: “Apart from being the TGV of ocean passages the boat offers the most spacious, open and best integration of the cockpit and salon areas in the market.”

Outremer has done a top job in packing in the creature comforts, stowage space and payload capacity, while keeping it light enough to eat miles. Although a lot to absorb and handle, the 55 offers a formidable blend of speed and luxury cruising.

As 2022 draws to a close, BOAT looks back on all the news stories that captured our readers' attention throughout the year. Here are the most popular yacht news stories of 2022...

40m zero-emission trimaran concept Domus revealed

In May, Rob Doyle Design and Van Geest teamed up to present a radical 40 metre trimaran concept called Domus. Named after the Latin word for ‘home’ the superyacht claims to rival a 60 metre yacht in terms of volume and aims to become the first truly zero-emission yacht over 750 gross tonnes. The design was one of the most popular yacht concepts of 2022.

Oceanco completes build of 127m Y721

Oceanco ’s 127 metre Y721, the yacht reportedly being commissioned for Jeff Bezos, has captured attention throughout her build. Thought to be named Koru , the yacht was officially launched in August this year, and has since moved through the Dutch canals by tow to complete outfitting. BOAT International brought readers the first glimpse of the superyacht in her final form, awaiting sea trials in Rotterdam.

49m superyacht 007 runs aground in Greece

At the end of summer, the 49 metre superyacht 007 ran aground in the bay of Kythnos, in the Cyclades island chain in Greece. The yacht reportedly struck rocks and began taking on water before listing steeply on her port side in shallow water. Efforts to contain potential pollution were quickly put in place, but the yacht’s hull remains in the port as of December 2022.

The incident follows in the footsteps of a number of yacht disasters in 2022, including the high-profile sinking of 39 metre My Saga , which capsized in southern Italy after several hours of foundering in deep water. Elsewhere in Italy, the 58.9 metre Idol collided with a bridge while leaving a Pisa-based shipyard in June, but sustained minimal damage. In May, the 45 metre Benetti Domani was disabled off the Washington coast after taking on water, but avoided sinking and was towed to a nearby shipyard for repairs.

50m Heesen Home to star of Below Deck Mediterranean season seven

Below Deck Mediterranean returned to screens this year, and the yacht playing host to Captain Sandy and her crew was revealed to be 49.8 metre Home . Delivered by Dutch yard Heesen in 2017, Home is one of the largest yachts of this size to feature a hybrid propulsion package, which makes her 48 per cent more efficient than other 50 metre yachts, and marks the first diesel-electric yacht to appear on the show. Later in the year, it was revealed that Benetti’s 60 metre St David would be the yacht appearing in Below Deck season 10.

160m Lürssen Blue superyacht delivered

Lürssen added a new addition to its fleet with the delivery of 106 metre Blue . The yacht hit the water in February 2022, showing off a Terence Disdale exterior and a number of standout features, including a pair of helipads and a generous swim platform with twin staircases leading up to the deck above. In a statement, the yard has said that an enhanced environmental focus was a key driver behind the build of Blue .

49m Eleonora E refloated following collision

In June, the 49.5 metre Eleonora E was hit by an offshore supply vessel in Port Tarraco in Spain. The classically-styled sailing yacht was docked when the vessel rammed in to her starboard side after reportedly encountering a mechanical failure. After lying in the port for several weeks, she was finally refloated in a three-week operation that involved more than 30 personnel.

45m half-built yacht Bella T sold ahead of auction

The 45 metre half-built superyacht Bella T was sold ahead of its auction at the Judicial Western Cape High Court. The boat, formerly known as Summit One and Lac III, had been subject to a judicial arrest after a legal dispute between previous owners and was sat on the dock in Cape Town for twenty years. Now under the new ownership of a South African businessman, Bella T will undergo repairs and the final stages of her construction.

45m Aria SF sinks following Ibiza blaze

One of the most devastating incidents of 2022 was the burning of the brand new 45 metre Aria SF . The yacht caught fire in a busy anchorage in the waters of Formentera, Ibiza, in August, and was ablaze for several hours. The still-smouldering hull was towed away from Ibiza, and the hull sunk close to Cap Martinet a few days later. Local news outlets report that the hull will be raised and towed to prevent further pollution to the surrounding water.

36m record-breaker Gentry Eagle scrapped in California

In May, the former transatlantic record holder 35.6 metre Gentry Eagle was demolished after sitting disused in California for several years. In 1989, the aluminium boat made the journey across the Atlantic in 62 hours and seven minutes. Gentry Eagle ’s impressive journey time was 23 per cent faster than the existing record, which was held by British airline tycoon Sir Richard Branson.

Plans for £250M national flagship axed

Earlier this year, the British government announced plans to build a £250 million flagship yacht. The invitation to tender was finalised and a number of designers put their concepts forward. In November, the government announced the plans had been scrapped as part of a reprioritisation of the budget. Speaking about the plans being culled, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said “it is right that we prioritise delivering capabilities which safeguard our national infrastructure".

10 of the biggest yachts at this year's Palm Beach International Boat Show

The Palm Beach International Boat Show returns to West Palm Beach's waterfront from March 21-24 — bringing with it some of the largest, most luxurious yachts in the world.

The Super Yacht Show Palm Beach features a range of boats that are longer than 100 feet, including 18 that are longer than 151 feet.

Here's a look at 10 of the biggest boats that visitors to the show can experience up close.

Come Together

This 197-foot behemoth with a price tag that starts at $59.95 million makes it the most expensive boat for sale at the 2024 Palm Beach International Boat Show.

Come Together provides plenty of space and amenities to do as its name suggests and bring more than a dozen people together for an adventure at sea, according to its listing on the show's website.

It was built in 2022 by Amels and features a hybrid propulsion system. The interiors were done by Winch Design of London, with materials including Jerusalem limestone, light matte oak and walnut, and bronze. The ship's six cabins can house up to 14 guests, the listing said.

A 27-meter sun deck features a Jacuzzi with a sunbathing area, gym equipment, sheltered bar and wind-protected dining table.

You can find Come Together in the water at Ramps C and D.

Hospitality

Want to buy the 164-foot Hospitality? The price starts at $29.75 million, according to the yacht's listing on the boat show's website.

The Westport-built vessel was first constructed in 2011 and refit in 2021. It has seven cabins that can accommodate 16 guests. That includes a primary suite and a VIP suite. It also features a sun deck with a hot tub and sunbathing area.

The ship has traveled "to some of the world's most remote places with an impressive 4,000+ nautical mile range," its listing said.

You can find Hospitality in the water at Ramp E at the show.

The 155-foot Ancora was just completed in August by manufacturer Mengi Yay, its listing said. It is being presented by Fraser Yachts.

Ancora was built for charter use and has a master suite with a private balcony, plus four staterooms including two doubles and two convertibles, allowing for up to 10 guests, the listing said.

Summer charter rates with Fraser run from about $282,000 per week in the western Mediterranean Sea to about $260,000 per week in the winter in the Caribbean, according to Fraser's website .

You can find Ancora in the water at Ramp 2.

Next Chapter

This Benetti-built vessel is 180 feet and 6 inches and was built in 2003 with a refit in 2022, the listing said.

Next Chapter's six cabins — including a split-level master suite with an observation lounge and private study — can accommodate up to 13 people. It features a Jacuzzi, gym and beach club, and is built for charter use, the listing said.

The price starts at $19.9 million, and the ship is being presented at the show by The International Yacht Co.

Next Chapter will be in the water at Ramp E.

For $21 million, you can be the new owner of the Feadship-built Berilda, a 155-foot yacht built in 2001 and refit in 2020-21, according to its listing.

The yacht has "the highest pedigree with a documented history of excellent owners and meticulous care," the listing said. That ownership includes Royal Swedish Yacht Club member Sten Tegner, and Richard and Leslie Fairbanks.

The current owner bought Berilda in 2021 and has sailed across the Atlantic Ocean twice and through Europe, New England, the Bahamas and the Caribbean, the listing said. The yacht features six cabins for up to 14 people and quarters for a crew of up to 10.

Berilda will be in water at Ramp C.

Liberty, built by Trinity, is 187 feet and 2 inches, according to its listing. The yacht is designed for entertaining, the listing said, with social spaces including a dance floor.

Liberty was built in 2012, with work including a paint job, main engine rebuild, new generators and 10-year survey completed since 2018. The price starts at $24.75 million and the ship is being shown by The International Yacht Co.

The yacht has six cabins for 12 guests, with additional capacity for 13 crew, the listing said.

Named simply W, this 188-foot Feadship yacht is being shown by its manufacturer, according to its listing.

The vessel, originally launched as Larisa in 2013, had a major refit in 2020 and was renamed at that time, the listing said. W's owner changed the livery and antifouling, among other alterations, over the past 10 months, the listing said.

W will be in the water at Ramp C.

Priced at $20.9 million and being shown by exhibitor FGI Yacht Group, the 164-foot Tsumat was built by Trinity in 2012 and refit last year, according to its listing.

The exterior was designed by Geoff Van Aller. The interior by Ramón Alonso features leather, suede, marble and walnut, with onyx floors.

There are six staterooms for up to 12 guests and housing for a 10-person crew, the listing said.

Tsumat will be in the water at Ramps 2 and D.

The Nita K II is about 171 feet and was built by Amels in 2004, the listing said. It's priced starting at $23.9 million and presented by Merle Wood & Associates.

A refit in 2021-22 included an overhaul of the main engines and generators, and a 20-year Lloyd's class special survey was completed earlier this year, the listing said.

The interior was designed by Alberto Pinto and Laura Sessa, and the yacht can accommodate up to 12 people in five staterooms, plus room for 14 crew members in seven cabins, the listing said.

Nita K II will be in the water at Ramp D.

If it tells you anything about the level of luxury aboard the BG Charade, this 157-foot yacht was built by Feadship in 1990 for the late Paul Allen of Microsoft, the listing said. Under Allen, the BG Charade completed three circumnavigations and served as the honeymoon venue for Bill and Melinda Gates.

A technical and cosmetic refit was completed in 2016 and included new generators, rebuilt engines, new teak on the exterior and a complete electrical system update, the listing said.

BG Charade has six cabins for up to 12 guests, plus accommodations for up to 10 crew, the listing said.

The yacht will be in the water at Ramp 7.

Bonus: Talisman C

The epically long — 231.6 feet — and super-luxurious Talisman C, built by Turquoise in 2011, will be shown by Burgess Yachts in the water at Ramps D and E.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

yacht of the year 2022

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

yacht of the year 2022

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

yacht of the year 2022

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

yacht of the year 2022

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

yacht of the year 2022

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

yacht of the year 2022

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

yacht of the year 2022

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

yacht of the year 2022

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

yacht of the year 2022

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

yacht of the year 2022

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to charter in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.
