Yacht Rock Bottle

Cult White Wine From Napa Valley

Chardonnay is the major player in this bottle, but don’t expect the typical butter-bomb from Napa Valley. We matured this wine primarily in stainless steele with just a touch of neutral french oak to highlight the tropical flavors of the Chardonnay.

Colombard is a grape that was first used in France to produce Cognac, and has become a popular blending varietal with Chardonnay. It brings out citrus notes and minerality to the wine. The Pinot Blanc brightens the blend with lively acidity, while the Sémillon adds a touch of stone fruit and richness to the palate.

Yacht Rock celebrates the bygone era of smooth-music by the likes of Kenny Loggins, Steely Dan, Hall and Oates, and Michael McDonald. On the back of the bottle you can find the quote “Keep it smooth, even when it grooves”, one of the three sentiments used to describe the music of the era. The songs from this genre are light, catchy, and above else, smooth.

Yacht Rock reminds us that there’s always time to kick back and enjoy the view. Imagine sailing off into the sunset, a cool breeze blowing in the sails, a refreshing drink in hand, and the soft tunes of the 1970s playing over the radio. We dont know about you, but that sounds like the dream to us.

Sailin' into the sunset.

Wine guy: best wines for summer tradition of yacht rock back to video.

July is fully upon us; embrace its sweet, saccharin summer vibes. If this involves being on a boat, then all the better. But even if sailing the seas is not in the cards, surfing the groove is always possible when you crank on the yacht rock.

At times maligned, yet always smooth — and admittedly, likely more infectious than people like to admit — yacht rock is summer’s classic power-pop anthem. But what wines pair best with yacht rock? And by proxy are ready to sail away into summer pairing?

Ruffino 2022 Aqua di Venus Pinot Grigio, Italy ($26.99, #425424)

The only thing better than saying, I’m on a boat, is exclaiming, I’m on a boat with a bottle of Pinot Grigio. Pinot Grigio has established its poolside cred, so crank it up a notch with Ruffino’s Aqua di Venus. It hits the classic PG nuances of citrus and flowers in a zesty yet smooth, fruity and exuberant white — all in a jaunty, fluted-shaped bottle. If this isn’t yacht rock worthy, well then Kenny Loggins has no business singing around a keyboard riff. Or, as the back label explains, this wine is “Fresh and delicate like the sea breeze that kisses the Friuli DOC region of Italy.”

Essential reading for hockey fans who eat, sleep, Canucks, repeat.

Bottom line: B, Pair with Loggins’ Heart to Heart

Sandhill 2022 Rosé, B.C. ($21.99, #583351)

If there was a colour associated with yacht rock it would be rosé. Or wait, is that more a shade? Admittedly, if there’s a need to think this through the plot has likely been lost. Interestingly enough, when sailing the power chord seas it does seem like a deeper, electric pink-hued rosé is in order. Sandhill’s latest vintage pink hits the right notes. A quirky blend  — mostly Merlot and Gamay, with good dollops of Syrah and Petit Verdot, plus a splash of Viognier — it is certainly not shy. Fruity and juicy, with acidity to balance, this is an easy summer crowd pleaser.

Bottom line: B+, The only call: Sailing by Christopher Cross

Louis Jadot 2021 Combe aux Jacques Beaujolais-Villages, France ($29.99, #469924)

Like quintessential rock yacht, this bottle easily stands the test of time. Similarly, both Beaujolais and yacht rock get dismissed by some as unserious at best, and at worst simplistic. To those naysayers I suggest picking up a bottle of this timeless Jadot Beaujolais-Villages and heading to www.yachtornyacht.com . Pour a glass and listen to the top 50 tracks while savouring this fresh and fruity, classy and honest Gamay that brings semblances of red fruit, herbs and forest floor. It’s polished, it’s balanced, and really this easy riffing red just brings good energy overall.

Bottom line: A-, Perfect pairing = The Doobie Brothers’ What A Fool Believes

The Swirl: Rosé Disco

Yacht rock and a Rosé Disco certainly feels like a natural fit! The latter, billed as a “Rosé Wine Fest and Picnic,” is scheduled to take place from 1-6 p.m. on Sunday, July 30 at the PNE Fairgrounds. The event features more than 25 local and international rosés paired with a culinary feast and live DJ sets — and yes, the suggested dress code is pink and white. Tickets are $30, plus taxes and fees. Details at www.rosedisco.com .

Tank Garage Winery

Tank Garage Winery comes to life in a 1930s era gas station in the Napa Valley town of Calistoga, California. The winery and tasting room are the dream of two longtime friends — who, after decades of collective experience in farming and creating world-class wine, decided to celebrate the heart and soul of vintage California culture and creativity.  We believe in the idea of making wine on a small, personal scale, by hand and with friends. The result is a small collection of “one off,” uniquely-crafted wines that will only ever be made once. Never Dream Alone.

Sail off to the yacht rock wine release tonight at tap & bottle, may 27, 2015.

' data-src=

By Theresa Delaney

What do nautical outfits, Hall & Oates, a magician, Edible Baja Arizona and white wine spritzers have in common?

You’re right. Nothing. However, for the past 6 years, local magician and sommelier Magic Kenny and Jared McKinley, associate publisher of Edible Baja Arizona (as his alter ego, party boy Kitty Katt) have thrown the Yacht Rock Party every summer. Attendees dress up in their best nautical-themed outfits, or in their “70s sleaziest”, and dance to the best music the late 1970s and early 1980s have to offer.

The cocktail of the night is always the white wine spritzer (because why not). In a special twist, Magic Kenny and Kitty Katt have decided to offer their own wine this year, created specifically for spritzers

The Yacht Rock White, a blend of sauvignon blanc, semillion, and Chenin Blanc is a smooth wine, complimented best by soda water and soft tunes. The wine was sourced locally from the Dragoon Mountains and produced by Cellar 433.

“When combined with soda water, the carbonation gives the wine that little bit of edge.” said Kenny and Katt. “Like in a yacht rock song, that one slightly dissonant note bathed in a gauzy matrix of consonant chords and rhythms. That dissonant note that reminds you the smooth moment is being insulated by the slightly tipsy feeling you get from the wine. Soft, but cerebral.”

The wine release party – a precursor to the actual Yacht Rock Party – will take place at Tap & Bottle on May 27 from 6 to 9pm. If you’re a dedicated fan, Magic Kenny and Kitty Katt will be available to sign bottles.

The official Yacht Rock party will take place on June 19 at La Cocina Cantina from 9pm to close. For a $5 cover, guests will be treated to a real boat photo booth, live band and DJ, and, of course, white wine spritzers.

Yacht Rock Wine

As we all sweat through our Hawaiian shirts and Breton top s in this record breaking heat , I am reminded that nothing pairs better with summer than the smooth sounds of yacht rock . And nothing pairs better with Steely Dan than breezy, light bodied wines with low alcohol and high acidity like Pearl Morissette’s 2021 Black Ball Riesling , Trail Estate’s 2022 Little Fluffy Clouds , and the always cheap and cheerful Aveleda Vinho Verde . And to match your sunset sails to your wine, there is Milan Nestarec’s Růž , a biodynamic rosé blend of Zweigelt, Saint Laurent, and Cab Sauv served in a crown-capped mini-magnum, or Proxies Sparkling Rosé , a non-alcoholic option made with Riesling grape juice, strawberry, pomegranate, lime peel, lavender, and more.

Soft Rock and Wine Pairings . In The Province's Best wines for summer tradition of yacht rock , James Nevison offers up his July wine picks paired with some soft rock classics. First up is Ruffino 2022 Aqua di Venus , a Pinot Grigio described as “fresh and delicate like the summer breeze that kisses the Friuli DOC Region of Italy,” paired with Kenny Loggins Heart to Heart . Nevison writes that “if there was a colour associated with yacht rock it would be rosé,” so his next pick is Sandhill 2022 Rosé , a mostly Merlot and Gamay blend, paired with Sailing by Christopher Cross . And lastly, Louis Jadot 2021 Combe aux Jacques Beaujolais-Villages , a Gamay that “like quintessential rock yacht . . . easily stands the test of time,” paired with a song that also stands the test of time: The Doobie Brothers’ What A Fool Believes .

Poolside Wines. In Vogue’s 8 Natural Wines You Should Be Drinking This Summer , Emily Wilson writes about The Waves , a new U.S. online natural wine service. Their mission is “to offer the world’s definitive selection of wines that are organically farmed, low-intervention, and delicious—and to empower people, wherever they live, to discover, understand, and experience them like never before.” The Wave’s Billy Smith and Rajat Parr told Wilson about a few of the wines they are most excited about in the categories of Poolside Wines ( Claro Que Sí! , a sparkling Riesling produced in NY’s Finger Lakes under the label Barbichette ), Apéro Hour ( Piri Naturel and Divý Ryšák rosé ), Dinner al Fresco ( Trousseau Singulier ), and lastly Barbecue (Milan Nestarec’s one-litre bottles of Růž , OKR , and Nach ).

Vinho Verde. In The Washington Post's What to know about vinho verde , Dave McIntyre writes all about this light, refreshing, slightly fizzy wine from Northern Portugal. Vinho Verde is not a grape variety, it is a DOC, which is the system of protected designation of origin for the production of wine known as Denominação de Origem Controlada; it means “green wine,” but translates to “young wine” as they are released not long after they are harvested and without being aged. The majority of Vinho Verde wines are white, made from local grape varieties including Alvarinho, Arinto, Azal, Avesso, Loureiro, and Trajadura. McIntyre's article lists five things to know about the wine including its pronunciation, which is apparently VEEN-yo VER-da, “with the last syllable all but swallowed” (I definitely pronounce it the other way: VEE-no VERD-ee), and he goes on to explain more about Vinho Verde's name, the region, how it gets it spritz, and how it's evolving.

OUTDOOR KITCHEN: Paso Robles’ Sextant Wines widens its horizon by becoming the official wine for U.S. Sailing

getoutside1-outdoorkitchen-sextantsail-sf2024.jpg

  • PHOTO COURTESY OF SEXTANT WINES

With a love for all things nautical, it was only a matter of time before Sextant Wines founder Craig Stoller struck up a partnership with U.S. Sailing.

“It’s such a natural fit,” Sextant Director of Sales Chris Blake said. “Obviously the tie to sailing and the tie to the ocean, and then we found a real natural alignment with both teams.”

As a name, sextant—an ancient navigation contraption used for measuring angular distances and observing altitudes of celestial bodies—underscores the Paso Robles winery’s passion to create Old World varietal wines through exclusive relationships with the French, Portuguese, and Spanish governments. It allowed Sextant Wines to import certified nursery grape stock that can be traced back to the original mother blocks in France, Portugal, and Spain. Currently, Sextant Wines produces more than 24 hand-crafted wines and runs two tasting rooms in Edna Valley and Paso Robles.

The 20-year-old winery added an all-American strand to its international network in May when it became the official wine of the national governing body of the sport of sailing. It’s already served as the presenting sponsor of the biennial Stakeholders Summit where sailing organizations meet with U.S. Sailing leadership to share ideas about sailing regionally in the country.

“We get to be a part of the end of races where they do Sextant Wines celebration moments,” Blake said. “Our sparkling wine gets awarded to the winner of the race, and like so many different sports, you get the old ‘shake out the bottle of sparkling wine’ to celebrate at the end.”

  • MEANT TO BE From left to right, Eric Krasnoo of U.S. Sailing, and Sextant Wines proprietors Craig and Nancy Stoller celebrate their official union with the sporting governing body leaders Rich Jepsen and Alan Ostfield.

Eric Krasnoo, the senior vice president of partnerships and memberships at U.S. Sailing, noted that while the governing body has a connection with Goslings Rum, the Sextant Wines union is its first association with a winery.

“We at [U.S.] Sailing are 127 years old but we’re really just starting to think about how we operate from a commercial standpoint,” he said. “We’re looking for brands that want to grow with us.”

Sextant Wines’ proximity to Southern California stood out to Krasnoo. He’s thinking beyond 2024 when it comes to U.S. Sailing’s relationship with it.

“As you look at the calendar, a lot of our athletes will be competing in Marseilles as part of the Paris Olympics in the next few months,” he said. “Right after that … people are looking at Los Angeles 2028 [Olympics], which is pretty close to the backyard where Sextant Wines is located.”

U.S. Sailing has 43,000 individual members and 1,500 yacht club and sailing center members around the nation. Through the partnership, Sextant has the opportunity to mingle with them.

“We’re looking to have different wines for the yacht clubs specifically,” Sextant Wines CEO Brian Storrs said. “We’re currently building different wine club packages for our wine club members, and also an allotment of chardonnay, cabernet, pinot noir, and sparkling wine with U.S. Sailing.”

Now, Sextant Wines is slated to appear at the Chicago Yacht Club for the U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship starting Aug. 2. At the end of September, the winery will participate in the U.S. Adult Championship at the Detroit Yacht Club. “Once you’ve navigated the sea with your sail and wind and the water, there’s nothing better than a great glass of wine,” Storrs said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s chardonnay, cabernet or any other varietal once you get back safe.”

'Man, they came to party': Yachtley Crew sails back to Indian Ranch with more yacht rock

Portrait of Richard Duckett

When Yachtley Crew came to Indian Ranch by the shores of Indian Lake in Webster last summer, it was evidently a very popular voyage through the smooth waters of a yacht rock tribute show.

"We love Indian Ranch. Man, they came to party. They were amazing," recalled Phillip Daniel, also known as Yachtley Crew's Philly Ocean and lead vocalist, about how the the show went and the reaction of the audience.

Yachtley Crew will be setting sail again for an appearance at Indian Ranch on July 25. "If it's anything like last year, we're stoked," Daniel said.

'Sailing ... takes me away ....'

The seven-member band, which dresses in nautical suits with captain's hats and wears aviator sunglasses, is currently on its "Full Steam Ahead" nationwide tour, the biggest tour since it was founded in Los Angeles in 2017. Upcoming dates also include South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset on July 26, Providence Performing Arts Center in Providence on July 27, and the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis on July 28.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

The band is riding the yacht rock wave since a 2005 video series launched the term in 2005 in an affectionate send up of artists such as Christopher Cross and Hall and Oates. Cross, who was at Indian Ranch July 7 with Justin Hayward of Moody Blues fame, had a big hit in 1979 with the soft rock song " Sailing " which is about getting away from everything on a sail boat and so helped form the archetype of Yacht Rock.

Yachtley Crew also call themselves "The Titans of Soft Rock."

Asked for a definition of yacht rock, Daniel said "it's one of those elusive things ... I think the most easy way to define it is the iconic soft rock hits from the late 70s and early 80s music." Except that, instead of soft rock, "yacht rock just sounds kind of more fun."

Yachtley Crew's first recording release "Seas the Day" (2023) includes its renditions of songs that have become regarded as yacht rock classics such as Boz Scaggs’ “Lido Shuffle,” Ace’s “How Long,” Robbie Dupree’s “Steal Away,” the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love” and Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like the Wind.” Other songs in the band’s set include Toto’s “Africa,” Looking Glass’ “Brandy” and Rupert Holmes’ “ Escape (The Piña Colada Song).”

Indeed, "The Piña Colada song, that is a great yacht rock core song, like 'Ride Like the Wind,'" Daniel said.

Audiences often dress up for the shows in yacht-themed attire and love to sing-along. Other yacht rock tribute and fun party bands include Yacht Rock Revue who will be performing at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield on Aug. 4.

'It has to be smooth'

Elsewhere, there has been some rather pedantic debate in some quarters about what makes true yacht rock, with terms appearing such as "nyacht" rock. An article in Mental Floss magazine helps keep things straightforward by saying " But above all else, the sound has to be  smooth . "

Daniel's vocals are certainly smooth, and the depth of sound that Yachtley Crew brings to its music is enhanced by having a sax player.

Daniel has memories of listening to the soft music of the late 70s/early 80s era while riding around with his father in a car and singing along to the radio. Later, he was in several original bands in Los Angeles. Besides Daniel (Philly Ocean) Yachtley Crew is made up of drummer Rob Jones (Sailor Hawkins), bassist Chaz Ruiz (Baba Buoy), guitarist Thomas Gardner Jr. (Tommy Buoy), backing vocalist Curt Clendenin (Stoney Shores), saxophone/flutist Paul Pate (Pauly Shores) and keyboardist Matt Grossman (Matthew McDonald).

"Each of us had careers with bands," Daniel said. The crew started to be assembled by Jones and Ruiz who are long-time friends and were listening to yacht rock music and felt they could do something with it. They put out a Craigslist ad and found guitarist Gardner. Daniel is friends with Gardner and also came aboard.

"Everything came together really organically," Daniel said.

'I think we have something here'

The idea of uniforms for the band came early. "Just the idea of yacht rock is such fun," Daniel said. But the group spent several months rehearsing to get the music down right. "We wanted to embody what people remember about these songs."

When the curtain was pulled on their first gigs Daniel recalls the shock on the faces of the audiences when they saw a band in nautical uniform. However, "They got it within two or three songs. They were screaming and dancing ... (I thought) Man, I think we have something here."

Yachtley Crew was soon selling out local venues and were noticed by the late legendary Jimmy Buffett who signed them to his own Mailboat Records label. The group have appeared on SiriusXM’s Yacht Rock Radio “Yacht Rock 311” show as the first ever Yacht Rock band to perform live at the station.

Just as the band was about to get ready for its first nationwide tour in 2020, the pandemic struck. "We had a ton of shows booked," Daniel said. Yachtley Crew made music videos, put on live-streamed concerts and played at some drive-in concerts that were organized in the Los Angeles area. "People seemed to really respond.'

As the lockdown eased, "I think there was so much pent up demand for live music it really helped us. We got all the gigs back and places we'd never played before were selling out," Daniel said.

'Something original'

The "Seas the Day" recording also has Yachtley Crew's first original song, "Sex on the Beach," ostensibly about the drink that bears the name.

"We wanted to put something original out there," Daniel said. The challenge for the band was to come up with a song that sounds like it could have been written in the late '70s/early '80s soft rock era. "We wanted to capture the same vibe," he said. The video for "Sex on the Beach" has a guest appearance by the Access Hollywood & iHeart host Mario Lopez.

The song and video includes a list of names of drinks, a couple falling in love, and "innuendo," Daniel said. All the members of Yachtley Crew contributed to the song. Once they had the concept, "we had the song written in 30 minutes. Everyone brings something unique to it." Fans have started requesting the song at shows.

Yachtley Crew has "two albums in the works" and two more original songs "in the mix." With that, "The core will always be the iconic songs," Daniel said.

The band has been venturing out across the seven seas with appearances abroad, including the United Kingdom.

"Total world domination," Daniel joked when asked about his ultimate goal for Yachtley Crew. Or at least, "To play for a stadium full of people," he said.

"We want to play the music for as many people as we can all over the world. When people come to our shows they're creating memories they will have for the rest of their lives. That's what it's about."
