Clifford Blaylock is the owner and manager of Marine Surveying. I have lived and worked in Lefkada for the last eight years.

I owned a beautiful 22-meter wooded motor sailor called “Glaros” which is Greek for seagull for over 20 years. I rebuilt her, and maintain her myself which taught me a lot about wooden boats. “Glaros” was British registered and used to take charter parties around the Greek Ionian Islands, but because of Brexit she was no longer allowed to work in EU waters, and I decided to sell her.

For over 40 years, I worked offshore in the Oil and Gas industry as a commercial diver. A lot of the work I did was as a hyperbaric welder, welding pipelines at the bottom of the North Sea and other places around the world. I was involved in the salvage of the century when 5 tons of Russian gold was salvaged from the shipwreck HMS Edinburgh eight hundred and fifty feet down in the Barents Sea.

Why should I choose a BMSE surveyor?

BMSE surveyors have all passed the Practical boat surveying course, and through the BMSE private forum and BMSE meetings, the surveyors gain further experience and abilities throughout their careers. Having access to the entire BMSE membership through the private forum and email, they can seek advice and consider defects together and thereby provide the best technical opinion to the client.

The Yacht Designers & Surveyors Association (YDSA) is the UK’s professional association for surveyors and designers and is a world-renowned organization. Cliff is an Affiliate Member of the YDSA.

International Institute of Marine Surveyors (IIMS)

Cliff is an Affiliate member of IIMS, and he is continuing his professional development through the (CPD) program to maintain his knowledge base, standards, and competency levels. As part of membership, IIMS members are expected to achieve a minimum of 10 points earned over a one-year period from 1st January to 31st December each year. Cliff has the CPD-compliant roundel logo on his IIMS website listing. He is continuing his professional development for 2023.

English Yacht Surveyor working in Gouvia Marine Corfu

Gouvia Marina, the first privately owned marina in Greece, is situated in Corfu, about 6 kilometres from the town of Corfu and 7 kilometres from the International Airport. For many years seamen considered the harbour and the bay of Gouvia a natural link between the Adriatic and the Mediterranean Sea as well as a port of call, where they could sail in, to repose, enjoying the climate and the beauties of the island.

The marina has a mooring capacity of 1,235 yachts, on both permanent and floating pontoons while there are also dry dock facilities for approximately 520 yachts. Gouvia Marina can gladly accommodate boats up to 80 m long and with 5,5 m draft. At all berths electricity is available (220V and 380V) as well as fresh water. In the 3.500 sq.m.of building facilities, a number of different services are available, such as commercial shops, car, motorbike and boat rental offices, restaurants, bars and cafe, Port police office, refuelling station, supermarket, and laundry.

The marina offers a full range of technical boat services and dry-docking facilities with two 75 and 65-ton travelifts and two 60 and 45-ton mobile cranes.

Choose a professional surveyor that is qualified, trained, experienced, holds PI Insurance and is a member of a professional body such as YDSA, MCA, Lloyds, Veritas, RINA, IIMS, MECAL.

Williams & Smithells do not recommend any particular surveyor and will work with any qualified surveyor instructed by our clients so as to ensure both buyer and seller are protected.

The main Classifications Societies and professional bodies are YDSA (Yacht Designers & Surveyors Association), MCA (Marine Coastguard Agency) , ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) Bureau Veritas, RINA, Lloyds, RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and IIMS (International Institute of Marine Surveyors).

Williams & Smithells will assist your surveyor with yacht details, history, arrange access to the yacht and/or boat yard, book or liaise with the yard for lift out, hull wash and block if required. Most surveyors like to be left to get on with the survey and will report back to the buyer direct after survey and before the report is written up. We are always on hand should the surveyor need any additional information or has questions relating to the yacht.

WHY SURVEY A YACHT IN GREECE?

You should have a marine survey of any boat you are thinking of buying – motor or sailing boat -generally all but the smallest will need a pre-purchase survey or if you are buying a “project yacht”. Well qualified yacht surveyors have a mixture of experience, specialist training opportunities and the backing of a well established Professional Association. You will need a survey for insurance in due course so find out the condition before you buy. If you intend to register the boat, ask for the tonnage measurement to be done at the same time.

The marine surveyor may identify faults that the average boat owner will not be aware of, possibly using specialist equipment. Knowledge of faults and deterioration can assist the purchaser regarding associated rectification of defects or appropriate allowances.
