Troon Marina is just north of Ayr, and is one of the southernmost yacht harbours in the Clyde area. Accessible at all states of the tide, Troon marina provides a sheltered haven, nestled within the harbour of Troon and located close to the town centre.

Marine surveyors – Ardrossan, Clyde Clyde Marina is at Ardrossan on the Ayrshire coast, which makes it ideally situated for cruising to the Islands of Bute and Arran. Ardrossan was at one time a port known for exporting coal and iron, In later years the port was known for shipbuilding up the end of the 1950’s. Today Ardrossan is home to a marina with 250 berths with power, water and broadband internet access, and all usual marina facilities including marine diesel available during office hours. Marine surveyors – Largs, Clyde Largs Yacht Haven has all tide access available to the marina. The marina is well sheltered by the adjacent Cumbrae Islands and the islands to the west. Largs Yacht Haven has 700 fully serviced berths with water and electricity available. Fuel is available 24 hours per day. Boatyard facilities are available with two types of lifting equipment capable of 45 & 75 tonnes. Boat storage ashore is available with capacity for 230 boats with water and power. Marine surveyors – Inverkip, Clyde Kip Marina has 620 protected pontoon berths for vessels up to 24m with a maximum draft of 3.5 metres. All pontoon berths are serviced with 240v power and fresh water points.The marina has a 50 ton Wise boat hoist which can accommodate up to 5.9m beam. For smaller craft there is a 25 ton crane that is also used for stepping and unstepping masts. The yard accommodates up to 150 boats on hard standing on cradles.

Marine surveyors – Dumbarton, Clyde Sandpoint Marina lies on the north bank of the Clyde estuary, across the River Leven from Dumbarton Castle. The marina has pontoon berths, with an 85 ton Launching/Recovery Trailer and a 40 ton Travel Hoist

Rhu Marina lies in a beautiful location at the side of the Gareloch on the north side of the Firth of Clyde surrounded by the hills of Argyll. Rhu Marina has a capacity of 185 pontoon berths together with 60 deep water moorings. Electricity is available on most pontoons. There is a fuel pontoon dispensing red diesel. Full Boatyard facilities are available within Rhu marina. The yard has a lifting facility for vessels up to 35 tonnes, and a storage area ashore that can accommodate 140 boats. Marine surveyors – Holy Loch, Clyde Holy Loch Marina is situated near Dunoon on one of the Clyde’s finest natural harbours, and is the marine gateway to the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Dunoon is an established holiday destination with many places of historical interest and can be easily accessed by ferry from Gourock which is less than an hour away from Glasgow. Holy Loch Marina has 250 berths available in the summer. All berths are fully serviced with electricity and water. The marina has a dredged depth of 3.0 m below LWOST, fuel berth with diesel and petrol, and a Roodberg slipway lift with a 23 tonne/18.3 m (60 ft) handling capacity. Marine surveyors – Isle of Bute On the Isle of Bute there is a council-run marina in Rothesay town centre, and in Kames Bay at nearby Port Bannatyne there is the newly opened Port Bannatyne Marina, which has 100 berths and a dredged depth to 2.5m below Chart Datum.

Marine surveyors – Oban Dunstaffnage Marina is located very close to Oban on the West cost of Scotland in an outstandingly beautiful area at the gateway to the Western Isles. Dunstaffnage Marina has 150 fully serviced berths with berthing available for boats up to 20 meters loa all year round together with berths up to 25 meters for visitors on a short term basis. There are full boatyard facilities by way of a 5000ft workshop available for repairs and maintenance and a travel hoist with a capacity of up to 18 tonnes. Oban Marina is situated on the picturesque Isle of Kerrera on the West Coast of Scotland, at the gateway to the Western Isles. Oban Marina has 94 fully serviced pontoon berths, and full boatyard facilities are available with a “Wise” boat hoist is available for lifting boats of up to 50 tonnes for maintenance and repairs. It is a safe and beautiful haven for wildlife with outstanding coastal scenery that has been admired by many. Cruising the isles of Orkney most enjoyable and also very convenient with the many options there are for tying up. There are three principal marinas accessible at all states of tide, providing excellent shelter and conveniently located facilities.

• Kirkwall Marina has 95 berths within the harbour. It is accessible at all states of tide, Depth varies with a maximum draft of 2.7 metres, but some shallow berths with less than 1 metre at LAT. • Stromness Marina is a 64 berth marina within the harbour, and is accessible at all states of tide. There are showers, toilets and laundry on site. All other facilities around the harbour. Dredged throughout to 2 metres at LAT. Maximum draft 2.0 metres. Piermaster: 01856-850744 Marina: 07810-465825.

• Westray Marina is a serviced visitor pontoon facility within Pierowall Harbour. Accessible at all states of tide, it is a summer facility only, with showers and toilets on site. Depth varies. Marine surveyors – Shetland Isles Scotland Shetland, Britain’s most northerly area, is something of an undiscovered cruising destination. Yachtsmen are increasingly looking beyond their home waters for interesting sailing challenges, and Shetland offers a cruising ground that is easily accessible from most of north west Europe, but with no need to cross oceans. Marine surveyors – Peterhead, Scotland Peterhead Bay Marina is a purpose built leisure facility catering for local and visiting boatowners. The marina gives Peterhead one of the finest equipped leisure harbours in the East of Scotland, offering a comprehensive range of services and facilities. The marina offers pontoon berthings for 150 vessels of up to 20 metres in length. The available depth of water at the entrance to the marina is 2.3 metres below Chart Datum although vessels up to 2.8 metres draught can lie afloat at the deepest berths.

Marine surveyors – Whitehills, Moray Firth, Scotland Whitehills Harbour and Marina is a small harbour and marina on the Moray Firth coast of North-East Scotland. There are lifting facilities for small to medium sized boats, and shore storage areas.

Marine surveyors – Banff, Moray Firth, Scotland Banff Marina was opened in April 2007 and now provides 76 fully serviced (water and electricity) pontoon berths that can cater for vessels of up to 10 metres in length with a draft of up to 1.8 metres.

Marine surveyors – Lossiemouth, Scotland Lossiemouth Marina on the Moray Firth has 90 berths split into two basins. Lossiemouth Marina provides the highest facilities/yacht ratio of any Marina in Scotland. Electricity and water are available for all berths. A 25-ton boat lift is available.

Marine Surveyors – Port Edgar, Firth of Forth, Scotland Port Edgar Marina is situated on the Forth just west of the famous Forth Bridge, on the outskirts of the historic burgh of South Queensferry. The marina has 300 serviced berths. Cranage is available by fixed crane at the outer end of the East Pier, for craft up to 5 tons displacement. Larger vessels can be launched by hired mobile crane.

Donald Ortchison is an independent Marine Surveyor and consultant specialising in commercial work boats,  fishing vessels, charter boats, leisure craft, fish farm and mussel farm installations.   Having lived and worked on the West coast of Scotland since 1988 as a marine surveyor, marine engineer, commercial fisherman and professional diver, he has extensive knowledge and experience in these fields, and is a member of several  professional institutions and Certifying Authorities, including The International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) and The Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors (SCMS).    He is a Registered Marine Surveyor (RMS) with the International Register of Marine Surveyors (IRMS), a Chartered Mechanical   Engineer (CEng), and a Chartered Marine Engineer(CMarEng).

He is authorised by the Certifying Authorities to undertake examinations on behalf of the MCA  for  Codes of Practice for Small Commercial Vessels including Complex Workboats, Stability Tests, and Tonnage Measurements.   MCA Fishing Vessel Registration and Inspection Examinations for commercial fishing vessels are carried out through the SCMS.  Condition Surveys and Valuations are carried out for Marine Mortgages with the Royal Bank of Scotland.  Work has been carried out as a Marine Warranty Surveyor for Load-Out and shipboard transportation operations.

Situated centrally within Cumbria we are a friendly family company with close to fifty years of marine experience. In Cumbria we operate locally throughout the Lake District, the Solway and Irish Sea coastlines and also further afield to cover the whole of the North of England and South West Scotland.

Established  over twenty years ago the Company initially provided services covering a range of vessels from yachts and small craft to large container vessels and supertankers. However, with ever increasing legislation throughout the marine industry it has became impractical and near impossible to offer expert services for all types and classes of vessels. Recently the company restructured to concentrate solely on the yacht and small craft market providing a comprehensive, experienced and very professional service to both the private and commercial sectors alike.  

The founder of the company sails a Sigma 36 out of Whitehaven and is currently restoring a famous half ton yacht dating from 1974. In addition to over forty years yacht and small craft experience he also has a Merchant Navy background having risen to the rank of Master in general cargo and container ships. He currently enjoys membership of both the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and Mecal.

Our marine survey reports are comprehensive avoiding jargon making them easy to read and understand. Most reports are between 10 and 15 pages long, and include both  photographs and recommendations on any remedial work that is required, together with  advisory notes that may help with the maintenance and upkeep of the vessel.
