Permatex 81849 Rust Treatment might be the last product on our list, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth checking out. For starters, it’s an affordably priced product, which is a huge deal if you don’t have the largest budget.

Not only that, but you can brush it or spray it onto an area, which lets you decide if you want a faster application process or a more precise one. It’s also an automotive-specific rust treatment product, and that means it works great on metal, fiberglass, and body filler, just about anything that rusts on a vehicle.

Moreover, it both treats the rust and acts as a primer, so if you are looking to paint over the affected area, it’s ready to go right after Permatex 81849 Rust Treatment dries – typically after 24 hours.

But while there’s a ton to love with this product, it did fall to the bottom of our list for a reason. First, it’s not great for larger projects simply because it comes in a smaller container size. But more important, it’s not as effective as the options further up the list.

While it can handle smaller spots of rust, if the rust gets a little more severe then it’s going to take a little more Permatex 81849 Rust Treatment to tackle the problem and fix it for you.

We completely understand, and it’s why we came up with this comprehensive guide to walk you through everything you need to know to get the perfect product for your vehicle the first time.

Why You Need To Treat Rust Right Away

When you see a little spot of rust on your vehicle, it’s not something you’ll want to ignore. The problem with rust is that once you have a little, it doesn’t take long to get a lot.

Rust spreads, and if the conditions are right, it spreads quickly. Even worse, while the products on our list work to stop the spread of rust and even eliminate it entirely, eventually rust will eat through entire components. And once it rusts through entirely, these inhibitors and converts can help.

So, if you do see a little rust on your vehicle, it’s in your best interest to treat the area right away to prevent more expensive problems in the future.

How Much Rust Can a Rust Converter Help With?

If your vehicle has some rust, it’s only natural to wonder if a rust converter can do the trick or if it’s time to replace the component. The key factor you need to consider is far the rust has gone through the surface.

Large areas of surface rust are perfectly fine for a rust converter, and as long as it’s surface rust they can fix the problem for you. The problem arises when it’s no longer surface rust and it’s gone a bit deeper and ate through more of the material.

Rust converters can only convert rust from the area that’s still there, they’re not going to rebuild any components. That’s really the key factor to consider when trying to determine if a rust converter will work for your job.

If you could sand off the rust and repaint the surface a rust converter will work, but if sanding off the rust would result in a structurally deficient component, then it’s not the way to go.

How Much Do You Need?

You don’t want to purchase more than you need, but you also don’t want to get halfway through the job and realize you didn’t get enough. We completely understand, and that’s why we wanted to give you a little guidance and clarification here.

In short, as long as you’re working on an automotive project, you shouldn’t need more than 10 ounces of product for your job. That’s more than enough rust converter to cover an entire exhaust system, and it’s unlikely that you need it for an entire exhaust system.

If you are completing a larger project you can purchase up to 20-ounces, but it’s probably going to be a little more than you need.

Do You Need To Paint Over It?

Absolutely not! One of the primary advantages of going with a rust converter is that after you treat the area you can be completely done if you want. Of course just because you can be done doesn’t mean you have to be done.

Most of the rust converters on our list also act as a primer, so if you’re looking to paint over them, then they’re ready to go as soon as you’re done.

Finally, keep in mind that most of the products on our list dry black. This means if you’re treating your vehicle in a visible area, it’s not going to dry clear or match the color of your vehicle. It will dry black, and there’s a good chance it’ll be pretty noticeable.

However, since most of the time rust occurs on components underneath your vehicle, the black appearance that they give off usually isn’t too big of a deal, and there’s no real reason you need to paint over it.

Aerosol vs Liquid

When you’re looking at purchasing a rust converter, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether you want an aerosol or a liquid. While they both do a great job of converting rust, there are definitely pros and cons to each option.

The advantage to going with an aerosol product all has to do with how easy it is to apply. All you need to do is point the can at the area and spray. You can quickly cover a large area, and you can go back for a second or third coat in a matter of seconds.

Furthermore, aerosol cans allow you to apply in harder-to-reach spaces since you can spray to the area instead of needing to physically reach it. Since rust can creep into all kinds of nooks and crannies, this is a pretty big advantage.

However, if you’re looking for a precise application like you often need in high-visibility areas on your vehicle, aerosol cans might not be the way to go. They’re notorious for “over-spray” which can discolor some of the surrounding areas that weren’t dealing with rust in the first place!

This is where liquid rust converters thrive. Since you get to pick the applicator, you can apply it as precisely as you need to without any sort of overspray.

However, if you’re trying to apply it in hard-to-reach places, you’ll need to invest in some sort of sprayer to get the job done. Finally, most liquid rust converters cost less per ounce than aerosol cans.

This means if you run an automotive restoration shop or simply have a lot of rust you need to deal with, a liquid option can be the more cost-effective choice.

Water-Based vs Oil-Based Rust Converters

Another decision you’ll need to make when picking out a rust converter is whether you want a water-based or oil-based product. There’s no wrong answer, but there are key differences between the two options.

Water-based options are generally more environmentally friendly, and they don’t typically stain and discolor other components if they get on them. However, they typically don’t act as a primer, so if you do plan on painting the surface they’re not always the best choice.

Oil-based rust converters, on the other hand, do a great job covering a surface and acting as a primer. They’re very easy to use, but they’re generally not as environmentally friendly, and you need to be very careful about what they get on.

There’s no wrong choice here, just know what you’re getting and what you need before making a decision! 

Sanding Down vs Rust Converters

The traditional repair when you see rust is to sand down the affected area, prime it, then paint it. It’s an extremely effective repair process, and if you do it correctly it keeps rust from coming back any time soon.

However, there’s no doubt that it’s a labor-intensive task, and the more times you sand something down, the less product you have to work with. Eventually when you’re sanding, you’re going to sand right through it!

That’s why we prefer using a rust converter. You’ll need to pull off any excess paint flaking, but you can skip the entire sanding process. The rust converter can help save some of the affected areas, and it reduces the chances of an area completely rusting through.

It’s also a lot less labor-intensive, which means you get the job done quicker and can move on to the next thing! Finally, if you get the right rust converter it also primes for you. It does two steps with one easy application, which is a real win-win.

There’s nothing wrong with the traditional repair if that’s the way you want to go, but there’s no doubt that rust converters make it easier and are just as effective at stopping the spread of rust.

Basic PPE and Application Precautions

It doesn’t matter if you go with a water-based environmentally friendly product or with a flammable aerosol, when you’re applying a rust converter you want to wear the proper protective equipment.

This means always wearing gloves and ensuring that you don’t inhale any vapors. Because while these products do a great job at getting rust off your vehicle, they wreak havoc on your skin and respiratory system.

Even if you don’t think that it’s causing a problem right now, they can lead to long-term damage in the future. If you don’t believe us, just check out the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) that are available for each product. They’ll break down all the potential causes for concern, and you can mitigate them by using the proper protective equipment.

If you’re starting to notice rust spots on your vehicle, don’t ignore them or resign yourself to a rusted vehicle. Treat it early and you won’t even have to worry about sanding anything down or putting in a ton of elbow grease.

Just don’t put it off too long, because rust does spread, and the longer you wait, the more likely it’ll start to rust completely through components, leaving you with unsightly holes you have to deal with.

How To Use Rust Converter

For those that are more familiar with rust removing chemicals, rust converter is different. Instead of removing the rust, your goal is to convert the rust to a black coating that prevents further rusting.

Prepare the Surface Good surface preparation will help the rust converter work more effectively. This step isn’t always necessary, but the quality of the preparation leads to a high quality end result.

Remove excess rust with a stiff, bristled brush. The object of this step is to get any loose or flaking rust off rather than trying to seal it in.

Clean and degrease the surface and let it dry. This step ensures that other surface contaminants will not interfere with the reaction of the rust converter on the rusted surface.

Product Application Apply rust converter with a brush or a roller. Larger surfaces are much easier to roll and brushes work well on smaller surfaces.

The rust converter will dry in 20 minutes however it takes 24 hours to cure. Application of a second coating will ensure proper rust conversion.

If applying an oil-based top coat, wait 48 hours after the last coat to ensure it has proper time to cure.

Clean Up and Safety Always read the safety precautions provided on the bottle. Further safety information is provided on the SDS sheet.

Use soap and water to clean rust converter from application equipment.

Other Tips and Precautions

  • Apply product when the temperature is above 50 degrees F.
  • Do not pour used rust converter back in the bottle.
  • Only use oil based paints for top coating, do not use latex paint.

Hi there I'm in the process of treating the underbody on my 1995 defender. I want to use dinitrol products, but dinitrol guide people into using the rust converter prior to the ml3125 and the 4941 underbody wax. Even though my chassis is solid, inside the chassis there is flaky rust and scabs. Along with 20 years of dirt build up, both of which I've tried to flush out. Is there any point in using rust converter inside the rails?? Waxoyl was also used externally last year without a rust convertor, so most of the external chassis I won't be able to get access to the original metal to rust treat. So is there any point in using it for what isn't covered by waxoyl? Thankyou

I don't think it will seal in moisture because the stuff I bought said it could be applied in damp conditions. I bought a treatment called Aquasteel. But, it's white milky stuff which is probably the same as all the other makes. So long as it 'dries out' I think the moisture in it and with it must be used up in the chemical reaction. Having said that, if I was in your situation, I would go for Dinitrol or other cavity wax. Make sure you use the cavity wax, it's much thinner and creeps/penetrates amazingly well. That should get in amongst the flakes of rust inside your chassis rail and do a very good job of keeping moisture and air out. Don't know what Vactan is, but obviously worth investigating if James recommends it.

What I've done with a couple of chassis now is to give the chassis a good going over with the pressure washer, pointing the nozzle into all the holes to try to break up and wash out the dirt and any flakiness, leave it about a week to dry out (I've done this in the summer so the weather helps me) and then spray Dinitrol in through the holes, until I can see it running out. Of course, it's not as good as cleaning down to bare metal, but it's not possible to do this inside box sections and it's better doing it this way than not doing anything! In places where I've done this that I've subsequently opened up (like inside the doors where I've eventually had the door trims off) everything looks to be covered in a dark oily film and whilst the rust is still there, it is not doing anything. That's after a couple of years (and two winters) in my main car. Sticking my fingers in the holes in the chassis (being careful not to get trapped ) it feels oily inside still. So I think it's prolonging my chassis life.

Saltlick

Fertan the chassis insides - it uses the water to spread, kill the rust and then is good for up to a year without protection on top of it. I wouldn't leave it without a topcoat though - ditch the waxoyl/dinitrol and go for Dynax s-50 instead. Salt Spray Test

I've watched a couple of blogs on YouTube where the narrow boat owners have wasted their time and money applying rust converters like Vactan when its not necessary, it seems to me that some boaters don't understand what it is designed for.

One blogger applied it to the inside of their water tank and the other applied it after wire brushing off rust and before priming with an oxide primer. 

As far as I understand it ( and I have consulted the manufacturers ) tannic acid / polymer based products like Vactan are designed to protect steel work that cannot be accessed for painting, its not a pre primer for any kind of paint system. Using it like this is at best a pointless waste of money and at worst preventing the primer bonding to the steel work and all further paint layers are dependent on the rust converter staying put, which if you have used these products you will know they are not in any way equal to a paint primer for longevity, Vactan will wash off steel work in one Autumn / winter in my experience. 

Vactan'ing everything is just the new fad for boaters that must have the latest chandlery product, because they saw someone else using it they must use it.

Stop watching you tube, its full of peeps with zero experience telling people with less than zero experience what to do and how to do a whole multitude of things. Of course you may be right re Vactan whatever that is as Ive never used it but in general you tube is a joke but makes good entertainment sometimes.

My engine space was rusty beyond belief so I vactan'd it, then 2 primer, (not actually necessary with Vactan?*), 2 undercoat and 2 topcoat. All seems fine after at least one Autumn/Winter, (maybe 2?).

How does the vactan get "washed off" the steel work when it is covered with several layers of paint?

* When did you speak to Vactan? The website still tells us that it is as good as a primer, and can be undercoated directly, rather than primer first. They also recommend it for "your garden gate", which is hardly likely to be inaccessible? Did they tell you something different when you spoke to them? One could wonder when they will get round to revising their web site?

I always have to buy it on ebay, not found a "stockist" elsewhere.

My roof desperately needs attention, there are patches where all the paint and the many layers of non slip have come off completely. As a quick fix 2 years ago I Vactanned  ( new word ) them and never got a dry enough day last year. So they are still like that and it has neither washed off or got new rust breaking through.

I have used Vactan quite a lot on the rusty decks of my old barge after getting as much scale off as possible. The company give the DBA a discount and they state that it is not necessary to prime over it. Overall the result was good on the decks but when I used it on the cabin sides where rust had developed under the d section covering the joint between sides and roof it ran down and left black streaks which took a lot of rubbing out before a top coat could be applied especially as the cabin sides where white.

I think the OP's post goes against many (most?) people's experience. In particular many people have reported considerable success in it's use on badly corroded integral fresh water tanks.  I have used it effectively for tackling that on a previous boat. What he is saying goes firmly against much of what the company say about the product.  It is certainly possible to paint over it with a great deal of success.  

The point is that you don't need to use it in the first place not that some people have used it and think its great,  in most areas you can easily remove the rust before painting, if you're using it on bare steel you have wire brushed there are no oxides there to "convert ". The only reason to use it is to stabilise an area of rust you can't remove and prep for painting.

Which is surely exactly what you are likely to have in an integral water tank with poor access, awkward corners and pitting of the steelwork.

I agree in that rust converters are a sort of last resort/second best when its not possible to remove rust, but "easily remove rust"?   in my experience  its always hard work and tedious, and if there is pitting then its very difficult to remove 100% of the rust.  Painting rust converter onto 100% good steel "just in case" is daft

I think this gets to the heart of the issue. A heavily corroded surface cannot have all the rust removed as the surface is heavily pitted. Vactan does an excellent job in such cases. 

Sometimes I think the OP doesn't actually have much boating experience at all.

However, if you’re using it on rusted steel then even after wire brushing there will be plenty of oxides (in all the pits) to convert. And that’s its intended purpose.

What on earth does “don’t need” have to do with it. As long as Vactan continues to convert rust into “not rust”, I’m using it! I could wire brush, manually or electrically but, having done that over the years, not a chance! In fact, using your “need” argument, you would probably say that I couldn’t do it electrically?

In your OP you said you had spoken to the manufacturers. I find it hard to believe that they all told you that their product was only for use in hard to get to places? Like I asked above, what exactly did Vactan say to you when you spoke to them?

I am always sceptical when a forum member uses a trade name.  It's never clear if it is a company (director or owner) stating its official position on the issue, or just a bloke who works for them giving his own opinion.

PS: has the forum started using English (US) as the default language?  Today it doesn't like the way I spell sceptical or humour .

Spot on. Mike. Before reading your post it did occur to me to wonder how you can remove "all" the rust. Wire brushing and grinding, however energetic and thorough, always leaves tiny little pits, and who can possibly say there is no iron oxide hiding in them?

I used Vactan two years ago on the inaccessible bits of my engine 'ole (1 coat Vactan, two top coats), and it has worked very well. Nobody can reasonably expect mild steel to stop oxidising altogether in a marine environnent.

ETA: Wotever obviously had the same thoughts.

I formed the opinion fairly early on he was only here to yank our chains.

This thread seems to be a good example and reminds me of my earlier conclusion. It started with that long thread about running gennys after 8pm.

Pretty sure that tannic acid rust converters are not safe for drinking water.

Are you pretty sure or are you just guessing.

Whatever you use, should be allowed to work, dry out fully and then be coated over with tank blacking/ epoxy/ or other coating so it is never going to be in contact with tannic acid in it's original format.

But dont mind us, keep plugging away.

Microscopic oxides left over from wire brushing pitted steel don't need to be converted, the paint system excludes the oxygen and stops any further rusting. 

When you say it worked very well what do you mean , what did it actually do that just painting didn't ?

Treating rust on cast iron keel with rust convertor

Hi When sanding rust back to bare metal on a cast iron keel, is there any point in applying a rust convertor after sanding but before painting/antifouling? The rust has been removed so the rust convertor seems pointless - or am i misunderstanding the point of the rust convertor? I read about rust convertor on a lot of posts in relation to rust on keels and I'm a bit confused about the purpose of it. Thanks

It is unlikely that rust will be confined to the surface. There will probably be inclusions and other defects that will promote rusting. Rust converter won't do any harm, and could do good.  

What I do every year is remove any flaky bits (usually zero) apply Fertan to any rust spots and apply a coat of metallic primer before anti foul. I’m having hull below waterline sand blasted this winter to remove flaking layers of anti foul but no intention of sand blasting the keel. By the time you get some epoxy on it it’s already rusting again so self defeating exercise in my view.

I beg to differ with eddystone. In my view, the best way to a relatively rust free keel is to grit blast it, then pressure wash with fresh water to get as much as practicable of the chlorides out of the pores, which will lead to gingering (light surface rusting) which can be removed with another quick grit blast. Next, prime with a good rust and moisture tolerant epoxy primer. The first of these magic paints was Corrocoat, developed by a small Yorkshire company for use on N sea oil rigs. It dominated that market to the extent that 3M bought them to get their hands on the patent. The patent has now expired and many paint companies make lookalikes. 3M still make a further development, Scotch Kote<fancy number) and is probably the most expensive of the options. We adopted this approach 11 years ago for our rusty iron keel, blasting the antifoul off the grp hull below the waterline at the same time and using the same epoxy primer on the grp where it serves as an osmosis barrier. 3 or 4 coats, I forget which. It has remained rust free since then and the Coppercoat finish has remained intact. The fancy epoxy primers are not cheap, but 11 years of no spend on antifoul and no annual blue hair day make that a good investment, in my view. Before we did the job, I telephoned Corrocoat, already acquired by 3M, and spoke with one of the team who developed the product. He said that my plan to pressure wash was great as anything to reduce chloride contamination would improve the paint adherence. When I asked whether a rust convertor (Fertan) would help, he was adamant that either residual phosphoric acid or phosphates would interfere with the curing of the primer, so best avoided. Peter.  

Agree with the above - although if you aren’t bothered about (a bit of rust) and don’t plan on epoxy coating, the converter and one component primer route seems to work for many on here. Our keel was wet blasted, then we used the massive blasting compressor to dry it as best we could, before immediate zinc rich epoxy primer coating. Then many more coats. Epoxy fairing compound. Primer. AF. Hoepfully it will last for 20+ years like the original epoxy coating. I doubt it would last a third of that time on top of an off the shelf rust converter. The epoxy says to apply direct to abraded and contamination free metal - this is definitely not what a rust converter leaves you with.

I used rust converter when I cleaned my keel last winter. Used a Tercoo tool for initial rust removal then Fertan then primer and antifoul. There was small bits of rust showing when hauled out a month ago.  

The problem with not worrying about a bit of rust is that when the rust grows, it blows off whatever finish is on top of it and allows salt water access to the slightly porous cast iron. If your going for a long term antifoul option such as Coppercoat, that is not really acceptable. Peter.

You can test the prepared surface for chloride( actually any iron salts) with potassium ferricyanide papers. .  

Personally I wouldn't bother. Get to bare metal surrounding the area, clean with solvent, get some 2-pack metal primer on straight away. One or two more coats, couple of coats of regular epoxy primer, fill and fair as needed, vinyl primer, antifoul. Did my whole (quite rusty) keel 3 years ago that way and only a couple of minor rust spots now with no further significant work.

When taking over my previous boat the vendor gave me an extended and thorough tutorial in all aspects of its maintenance; he recommended mechanically removing all rust spots, then allowing the bare metal to "ginger", as alluded to above, then apply rust converter, which would react with the developing rust to form a stable substrate over which to apply metal primer. With my present boat I discovered that the best method of mechanically spot- removing rust is to use a Needle Blaster, such as can be hired from HSS. Having used one in 2019 I haven't had to deal with rust since, fingers crossed for January's lift-out!  

Thanks for all the comments Doesnt seem like their is a definite answer so I'll prob just take the easiest option i.e grind off, primicon (because i have some) and antifoul

The grit blasters fertanned my keels Immediately after blasting and I had no rust even after a month. Washed off the loose stuff and epoxy faired the keels before 5 coats of gel protect and 4 of coppercoat. On the drying grid after 10 months and no rust anywhere. No fouling other than slime either.  

Concerto

Cast iron keels are slightly porus to water. This means any treatment can never completely stop rust. The OP was talking of sanding the keel. This will still leave some existing paint in the micro hollows in the casting. It would be highly unlikely for any preparation method to get a 100% clean metal. So then the choice is what to apply. On Concerto I favour the Fertan route and over the years I have seen a declining number of rust spots. The keel was double treated with Fertan and washed off with water as instructed. The Fertan forms a coating to the cast iron that stops rusting so water does no harm. The next application is a minimum of 5 coats of International Primocon. This creates an impervious layer over the Fertan, finally 2 coats of hard antifouling (dark blue) followed by 2 coats of self polishing (white). Concerto normally remains in the water and is lifted every other year. Any small rust spots are cleaned and treated with Fertan and Primocon as above. One point I should mention is the bottom of the keel is impossible to treat as she stands on it. There is very little spread of rust coming from the bottom onto the sides of the keel, so the treatments applied seem to be very effective and well bonded.

An HTML to Markdown converter for Rust, inspired by turndown.js .

  • Rich options, same as turndown.js
  • Reliable, it passes all test cases of turndown.js
  • Minimum dependencies, it uses only html5ever
  • Fast, it takes less than 200ms to convert a ~1.4MB Wikipedia page on an i5 7th gen CPU

You can safely share HtmlToMarkdown between multiple threads when only using built-in tag handlers.

If you have custom tag handlers that are not stateless, you likely need a thread-safe mechanism. See AnchorElementHandler for example.

Rust Converter: Organic, aqueous rust converter-emulsion, which stops the corrosion process and neutralises. Following the reaction time, a perfect bonding course can be worked with filling or varnished. Rusted surfaces are discoloured black after application.
