Part of a crane falls on Fort Lauderdale bridge, killing 1 person and injuring 3 others

yachts360 fort lauderdale

Part of a crane fell on a bridge in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Thursday afternoon, killing one person and injuring three others, authorities said.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Chief Stephen Gollan said at a news conference Thursday authorities received numerous 911 calls around 4:30 p.m. about a crane that had collapsed on SE 3rd Avenue. Gollan said at the time of the collapse, it was an open intersection with vehicles passing on both north and southbound lanes.

Gollan said crews evacuated the area upon arrival and then went floor by floor to make sure the construction workers who were working on the building were safe and accounted for. Gollan said one worker fell off the side of the building with the crane part and died as a result of the injuries.

Two people who were in their vehicles on the bridge at the time of the incident were transported to Broward General Hospital, one in stable condition and the other with minor injuries, according to Gollan. A third person suffered minor injuries and refused to be treated, Gollan said.

Gollan said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Fort Lauderdale Police Department are investigating the incident. He also said the Florida Department of Transportation and the U.S. Coast Guard will assess the bridge, as the incident left a hole in the bridge upon impact.

"It's my understanding from the construction company that they were doing a process at the time called stepping the crane. It was not the crane per se that actually failed. It was a platform that they had equipment staged on that had failed at the time of the incident and those items fell from the building down onto the bridge below," Gollan said.

The New River was temporarily closed to all marine traffic and the bridge was closed to road traffic, but according to WSVN , a TV station based in Miami, the bridge has been reopened.

Local news | oj simpson, fallen football hero acquitted of murder in ‘trial of the century,’ dies at 76, subscriber only, local news | fort lauderdale mayor responds to fatal crane incident, says city will discuss being more ‘hands-on’.

A construction worker was killed and two people were taken to the hospital after a portion of a crane dropped onto the Southeast Third Avenue bridge over the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale on Thursday afternoon, April 4, 2024. (Carline Jean/South Florida Sun Sentinel)

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis responded Saturday to the dramatic crane incident that killed a worker, injured three others and damaged a bridge in the city’s downtown two days before, describing it as “unusual” but adding that the city could potentially do more to oversee construction projects.

A large, blue piece of steel from a tower crane at the Gables Riverwalk construction site at 333 N. New River Drive E. had smashed into two cars on the Southeast Third Avenue drawbridge about 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon, landing on top of a van and crushing the passenger side of the vehicle. The front of a Tesla was also severely damaged.

“We all realize this was a terrible accident and it’s clear that the city perhaps needs to be more hands-on in terms of ensuring the best practices are observed in constructing these buildings,” Trantalis told the South Florida Sun Sentinel Saturday afternoon. “At our next commission meeting we will discuss this. But keep in mind there have been dozens of buildings built in the city over last 20 years and we’ve never had an accident like this.”

The accident killed 27-year-old Jorge De La Torre, a traveling construction worker from Atlanta with a young son, according to his family. Officials, including Trantalis, said it was lucky that more people were not injured or killed considering that the crash happened during rush hour in the congested downtown area.

In the days since, some residents pointed to the accident as the consequence of over-development and lack of oversight. One neighboring resident had complained about safety issues at the same construction site to both OSHA and the city. The same construction company he complained about had received multiple OSHA violations last year for failing to protect against falls.

A construction worker was killed and two people were taken to the hospital after a portion of a crane dropped onto the Southeast Third Avenue bridge over the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale on Thursday afternoon, April 4, 2024. (Scott Luxor/Contributor)

Trantalis acknowledged that nearby residents had complained about the project but said that their complaints largely had to do with the building blocking their views, not safety.

“This is an urban setting, and these kinds of situations will continue to evolve as buildings are built next to one another,” he said. “But there was never a concern about safety or risk during these public meetings and for good reason, because we don’t have a history of that.”

Gary Grayson, the resident who had complained to OSHA, said he had also complained to the city commission about the construction for several years. According to minutes from a February 2021 commission meeting, he gave a video presentation “illustrating his opposition to the Project due to the small lot size, setbacks and wind studies,” with which other residents had voiced agreement. In a June 2023 presentation, he spoke about code enforcement violations and mentioned a lack of netting to protect people from falling objects.

Responding to critics who cited over-development as a cause, Trantalis said he had “anticipated voices against development would become sharpened as a result of this incident.”

“However, we are continuing to follow the path of the downtown master plan,” he said. “These buildings are consistent with what the community had agreed to many years ago. The commission is just following those guidelines, and nothing has changed.”

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Chief Stephen Gollan told reporters Thursday that the workers were in the process of “stepping” the crane, where sections are added to the tower crane to elevate it as the under-construction building grows taller. A platform holding equipment failed, he said, not the crane itself. De La Torre’s brother, Brandon, said that a cable had snapped, causing the piece to fall.

While the city wants to get to the bottom of what caused the accident, Trantalis said he did not want to “pre-judge” what happened or how it could have been prevented.

“We like to think it was an unusual situation,” he said. “Our hearts go out to the family members of the deceased, their friends, their coworkers. We want to continue to be able to build our city in a safe and proportionate way, and we’re prepared to listen to experts on next best steps as the construction process continues.”

Commissioner Warren Sturman, who represents the district where the accident took place, did not return voicemails Friday or Saturday.

Immediately after the incident, two people were hospitalized, one with only minor injuries. A third person who was injured refused to be taken to the hospital. No additional information was available Saturday.

Fort Lauderdale Police identified four people “directly involved” in the accident as Gemmalyn Castillo, 37; Carol Zinser, 69; Gregory Garcia, 43; and Mark Cerezin, 56, the driver whose Tesla was struck by the chunk of crane as he was driving across the bridge. Zinser did not return a voicemail Saturday. Castillo and Garcia could not be reached.

Staff writer Angie DiMichele contributed to this report.

OSHA investigating how part of crane fell on Fort Lauderdale bridge killing one, injuring two

FORT LAUDERDALE - Two people who were injured Thursday after part of a construction crane came crashing down on a downtown Fort Lauderdale bridge have been released from the hospital.

It happened during rush hour on the SE 3rd Avenue bridge as construction crews worked on a high rise.

"It's my understanding from the construction company that they were doing a process at the time called stepping the crane. It was not the crane per se that actually failed. It was a platform that they had equipment staged on that had failed at the time of the incident and those items fell from the building down onto the bridge below," said Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Chief Stephen Gollan.

The stepping process involves adding a section to increase the crane's height. In this case, it appears to have come loose and fell. The crane itself remained secured to the building.

A construction worker who fell with the crane piece died. He's been identified as 27-year-old Jorge De La Torre. On Friday, his family went to the construction site to collect his belongings.

"I was driving over the 3rd Avenue Bridge and I felt some type of compression, and I looked up and I saw this big, huge piece of blue metal coming down and I slammed on the brakes and then it hit the front of my car," said Mark Cerezin who was driving a Tesla. "It was like slow motion, then that piece of metal bounced in the air and then went to the right and landed on another car. I couldn't believe that I was still alive."

Part of the metal structure ended up on top of a black vehicle, almost splitting it in half. Cerezin's Tesla had significant front-end damage.

Cerezin, a Fort Lauderdale resident, said he got out of his car and helped a lady who was bleeding.

"My heart goes out, I mean, to this person who lost their life and to their loved ones, I mean, that could have been me," said Cerezin.

Jennifer Parent lives across the street from the building under construction. She said there is construction noise every day but this was different.

"I heard a blood-curdling scream and I knew something quite devastating had happened," she said.

Valeriia Becher took video moments after part of the crane fell. She was in a car with her 6-year-old daughter, her boyfriend and her sister. She says they were just meters away from where it happened.

"We saw like in a movie, like a horror movie we seen this - we're watching this construction detail just falling like paper," Becher said.

She said a car near her was struck by part of the crane and that her boyfriend ran over to help.

"Life is very short and the only thing you need to do now is live like today - this very moment," said Becher.

Realtor Jason Taub, who lives close by, took a video of the piece of crane being lifted to the platform on a New River apartment.

Seconds later, the piece fell onto the bridge.

"The moment it hit, you could hear screams. It's hard to get out of your head," he said.

Overnight, crews removed the section of the crane from the road and used a metal plate to patch up the hole it had made on impact. The road was then reopened to traffic.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Florida Department of Transportation, and Fort Lauderdale police are investigating to determine what went wrong.

KAST Construction holds the permit to the $87.9 million dollar project site at 333 North New River Drive where the crane appears to be located, according to city records. It's a 43-story apartment building. It's unclear if KAST or a subcontractor was overseeing the crane operations at the site, according to CBS News Miami partner The Miami Herald.

KAST has settled a handful of lawsuits involving allegations of negligence and injury over the last few years, according to the Herald.
