Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Contest 36S

  • July 9, 2009

The 36S is a substantial, aftcockpit cruising yacht with high topsides and semi-fl ush decks, which appeared in the mid- 1980s. She was designed for serious seagoing both above and below decks. Performance is not special but better than her predecessor. The saloon looks small but has lots of stowage. The heads is forward and the forecabin is decidedly cramped. There is a large aftercabin, though, a good galley and huge chart table.

LOA 10.92m (35ft 10in), LWL 8.90m (29ft 2in), beam 3.55m (11ft 8in) Draught 1.65m (5ft 5in), displacement 7,400kg (16,315lb). Price guide: £60,000 to £90,000. YM test report April 1986.

SHIVA

"SHIVA" 1985 Contest 36'

The SHIVA is a 1985 model CONTEST 36S sloop as produced by CONYPLEX B.V. of Holland from 1984 through the early 1990's. She is one of the (88) examples built of this popular sailing yacht manufactured by a Factory with both a tradition and reputation of building top-notch sailing yachts since 1960.

Broker's Notes

The SHIVA is an excellent example of the CONTEST 36S model that was first introduced in 1984 and produced through 1994. Built by the renowned CONYPLEX B.V. of Medemblik, Holland. she's the 14th example out of a total of (88) produced. The new "C36S" was one of the first of the true performance-oriented designs offered by this Manufacturer for the benefit of cruising sailors who desired this modern benefit as available with up-to-date hull shapes, sail plans and manufacturing techniques and materials.

The CONTEST 36S was constructed with a end grain balsa-cored hull, one of the first in Europe to do so along with other yachts by BALTIC YACHTS of Finland. With her powerful sail plan, the C36S was an overnight success on & off the race course. The CONTEST 36S set new standards for the popular "cruiser-racer" classification that combined structural integrity and high levels of interior joinery fit & finish that Dutch builders are famous for both then and now! In fact, the SHIVA successfully participated in the Marion-Bermuda Race in 1990!

The SHIVA has had only a single Owner since manufacture! Purchased by her present Owner in the Summer of 1985, the SHIVA has continued to be thoughtfully maintained, upgraded and equipped since "day one". The innate qualities of build, performance and "features & benefits" of the CONTEST 36S are the principle characteristics that have served to attract sailors over the years to this marque. Sailors who desire an offshore-capable yacht with a modern rig & deck plan, a roomy aft-cabin interior and good performance as well will find a proper yacht with the CONTEST 36S. .

The SHIVA is offered for brokerage sale as her Owner's boating plans .. and the time available for her use .. have changed. All in all, she represents a very attractive & complete package that is most difficult to replicate and acquire in today's market and in this price range. The SHIVA is currently being stored in the water in a protected slip in Stamford. CT.

Review of Contest 36

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 3 cabins, 7 berths, a galley and 450.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat has more than one rig. One option is a ketch rig. Another option is a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Contest 36 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

Contest 36 can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.90 - 2.00 meter (6.23 - 6.53 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta MD17C diesel engine at 36.0 hp (26 kW), which gives a max speed about 5.7 knots.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 150.0 liters (39 US gallons, 32 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Contest 36 is 1.71, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Contest 36 is about 202 kg/cm, alternatively 1131 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 202 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1131 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 35m 2 (376 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Bakers face off to be named the best at the second annual Pepperoni Roll Contest

by STAFF REPORTS

Local bakers gathered at GoAart Ballpark in Charleston for the second annual Pepperoni Roll Contest. (WCHS)

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — Local bakers gathered at GoAart Ballpark in Charleston for the second annual Pepperoni Roll Contest.

The bakers whipped up their best iterations of the West Virginia staple to compete for the prestigious Golden Thumb Awards, Both judge's choice and the people's choice awards were up for grabs.

The event featured a wide array of vendors and pepperoni rolls to choose from.

“It’s going to be really hard to judge because there's a lot of really good ones,” Jay Silverman, host of Youtube channel HaveFunWV, said. “Everyone's like, good luck.”

Judge Joel Bennet said that while there will only be a few awards given out, everyone is a winner when it comes to pepperoni rolls.

“I think everybody loves pepperoni rolls,” Bennet said. “When they come out here, they get to compare one to another. It's really difficult because they're all so good in their own way.”

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
