Dutch boatbuilder takes over boatyard

Sustainable yacht builder Vaan Yachts has taken over yacht service company Yagra in Hellevoetsluis. Vaan will take over the site, buildings, marina, equipment and employees, with Yagra’s activities incorporated into a dedicated entity, Vaan Services. 

Vaan Yachts builds sustainable luxury sailing yachts from recycled aluminium and this acquisition offers Vaan the opportunity to realise its growth ambitions for the construction of sustainable aluminium sailing yachts in Hellevoetsluis, the Netherlands. 

For Yagra owners Caio de Graaf and Krista Voorham, the acquisition offers opportunities to develop new activities. They will continue to be active in the watersports sector elsewhere in the Veerhaven of Hellevoetsluis. de Graff will also remain involved with Vaan Services. 

de Graaf, director of Yagra says: “After starting 30 years ago with a 100sqm workshop at the Veerhaven, we are proud that we have been able to expand Yagra at this location into one of the largest yards in the south-west of the Netherlands. By handing over the yard to Vaan Yachts, there is room for us to take new steps with Yagra.”

Igor Kluin, director of Vaan Yachts, says: “This acquisition is a unique opportunity for Vaan. A beautiful location, equipped with all facilities, with beautiful sailing water right in front. Hellevoetsluis has a rich history of yacht building over centuries, and it is nice to continue that tradition in a modern, sustainable form.” 

The yard consists of 8,750sqm of land, 4,000sqm of water and two buildings with a combined area of about 3,000sqm.

MADE FROM RECYCLED ALUMINIUM

The design of every Vaan is based on circular principles from the start. It is mostly made of recyclable materials and it is almost completely recyclable itself.

The hull is made of more than 50% recycled aluminium like old window frames, traffic signs and license plates. Some parts contain even more than 85% reused materials. Aluminium also has an excellent track record for its strength, safety and flexibility. And of course it has a great look.

Vaan Yachts neemt jachtservice Yagra in Hellevoetsluis over

Catamaranbouwer Vaan Yachts in Hellevoetsluis neemt jachtservicebedrijf Yagra – stadsgenoot – over en zet de activiteiten voort in Vaan Services. De overname betreft opstallen, terrein, haven en materieel. In totaal gaat het, grond én water, om 12.750 m2. De twee hallen beslaan 2880 m2. Twee vaste medewerkers van Yagra gaan ook over en voorlopig blijft Yagra-opricher Caio de Graaf betrokken bij de werkzaamheden, die dus door Vaan Services worden voortgezet. Vaan Yachts bouwt duurzame aluminium catamarans, waarin deels gerecycled aluminium is verwerkt. Directeur Igor Kluin: “Voor Vaan is deze overname een unieke kans. Een prachtige locatie, voorzien van alle faciliteiten, met schitterend zeilwater voor de deur. Er heeft in Hellevoetsluis van oudsher jachtbouw plaatsgevonden en het is mooi die traditie in een moderne, duurzame vorm voort te zetten.” Yagra-eigenaren Caio de Graaf en Krista Voorham blijven, elders in Veerhaven, actief in de watersport. Yagra startte 30 jaar geleden met een werkplaats van 100 m2.

The new Vaan Yachts brand is clearly showing its ambitions with this R5, the second model to be launched, barely a year after the presentation of its little sibling, the R4. Measuring 7 feet longer – and still built in aluminum - the catamaran presented to us by brand co-founder Igor Kluin boasts a meticulous design, remarkable cruising comfort and good performance potential. In the dock of the small service yard in Hellevoetsluis, near Rotterdam, we discovered the long-awaited Vaan R5. Hull #001 was still being finished but was to be delivered to her Owner in a few weeks, so the window for us doing a test couldn’t have been tighter! Your eye is drawn immediately to the matt black painted hulls, the metal-gray coachroof, the PET sandwich bimini structure with its canvas in black Sunbrella fabric, the black aluminum Selden mast and the cork-lined deck. The black color used here contrasts with the grey lacquered R4 and underlines elegance worthy of contemporary superyachts. With its attention to design details - the crisp deck edge, angular bows, curved tinted glass roof windscreen - I can’t help but make an association with Van Dutch, an iconic Dutch brand of Open powerboats. Igor Kluin seems to appreciate this flattering comparison, and even admits to having been inspired by these luxury motorboats. Vaan Yachts, based in the Netherlands, is carving a successful niche for themselves manufacturing high-end, eco-friendly catamarans with a focus on achieving a high level of sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint. They stand out for their elegant interiors inspired by luxurious hotel suites.

Vaan Catamarans are built to sail with aft helms and a low boom. A big part of their ethos is the use of sustainable materials. So the boats are made from recycled aluminium and they use FSC-certified cork decking and recycled fabrics. And the yacht is all-electric too.

The R5 is the second model to launch from the yard after the R4. This 49-footer has an 80 m2 mainsail and a 45 m2 self-tacking jib with options to fly a Code 0 or Gennaker off the bowsprit.

Vaan R5 Layouts

The R5 comes in two designs: the open cockpit and the closed cockpit live-aboard model, the R5-LA. Both have been designed for extended blue water cruising or a family live-aboard

On the R5-LA, the sliding door between the saloon and cockpit is further aft, creating a larger interior saloon (30m2) that allows for different layout options.

Down below, the Vaan R5 has an owner’s hull on the port side with a big bathroom with a spacious shower, head and plenty of drawers and shelves for storage. The interior design is elegant and minimalist, and the designers have thought hard about how to deliver a warm and cosy environment on cooler days and a cool, relaxed space in warmer climates. There are walk-in closets in both hulls.

There is an optional seating area forward where you can enjoy a sundowner. The table can be raised to provide seating for 3-4 people or lowered to make it into a large sun-lounger.

Options Starboard You can configure the starboard hull as a second master suite with a walk-in closet and full bathroom like the Owner’s side. Or you can configure with two cabins with a Mid-Bathroom or two smaller Double-Mid Bathrooms.

Torqueedo Saildrives (no hydrogeneration) – 2x Deep Blue sail-drives – Power: 2x 25kW – (similar to 2x 40Hp combustion) – 40-80 kWh batteries – Optional generator: 15kW

Oceanvolt (with hydrogeneration). – 2x SD15 sail-drive – Servoprop option – Power: 2x 15kW (similar to 2x 30Hp combustion) – Hydro Generation: up to 2x 1kW (standard), up to 2x 2.5kW (servo-prop) – Valence LiFePO4 batteries 20 or 40 kWh – Optional generator: 15kW
