Sailing Itineraries from Volos

Volos offers some fantastic sailing for both one and two week charters and routes are usually similar to those from nearby Skiathos Island (where Istion also maintains a charter base ).

You will start your holiday enjoying the unspoiled bays and small ports of the Gulf of Volos . Further east, the beautiful green islands of the Sporades including Skiathos , Skopelos and Alonissos beckon to be visited. Sheltered and unspoiled anchorages along with sandy white beaches are a common feature of all these islands.

For those with a little more time, two week charters can include the southern most island of the Sporades, Skyros , as weel as stop along the coast of Evia .

The Sporades are well known for the Alonissos National Marine Park , the largest protected marine area in Europe. The Park includes 6 smaller islands (Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Psathoura, Piperi, Skatzoura and Yura), and is of particular scientific and cultural interest, and is ideal for free diving , wildlife observation , photography and other nature oriented activities.

The limited degree of human intervention and the excellent state of the natural environment make the landscape and marine areas of the Park an ideal refuge for many endangered species, such as the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus and various species of dolphins and whales .

Sailing trip from Volos: General information about the Greek port city

The modern port city of Volos in the Thessaly region is one of the largest cities in Greece with 86,000 inhabitants. It looks back on a long history and is considered the jewel of the Pagasitic Gulf. A walk through Volos reveals numerous villas, museums and magnificent churches that illustrate the wealth of the city. The picturesque seafront has many appealing restaurants overlooking the open sea. Without a doubt, the west side of the harbour, which can be reached via Argonautenalle on the beach promenade, is one of the most beautiful places in Volos. There, alongside fishing boats and yachts, you will find an exact replica of the ship Argo, made famous by an ancient Greek legend.

Yacht charter Volos: diverse cruises and destinations in the sailing area of the Northern Sporades

The Gulf of Volos and the Northern Sporades are a sheltered, beginner and family-friendly sailing area. Numerous unspoilt bays, warm, crystal-clear water, green hilly landscapes, small islands, imposing rocks and a cosy tavern in almost every bay - this is what characterises the sailing region of Volos.

The Northern Sporades include the four large, inhabited islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos and Skyros, as well as several small uninhabited islands with beautiful bays and beaches. These islands are ideal to be explored with a Pitter yacht charter from Volos.

The Sporades archipelago, which translates as "the scattered ones", is known for its pleasant climate. Warm temperatures and ideal wind conditions make autumn and spring popular sailing seasons in addition to the summer months.

Numerous bays and coastal resorts, as well as the archipelago of the Northern Sporades, offer a variety of possibilities for a perfect sailing holiday in the Gulf of Volos . The distances between the islands and moorings are short and easily covered. The islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos each have a main harbour and one or two smaller jetties. There are plenty of well-protected moorings, where you can usually anchor with a shoreline. On the larger islands there is often basic infrastructure with a coffee bar and tavern on the beaches and in the bays. Due to the sailing trips from Volos , there is individual tourism on the uninhabited small islands only during summer.

Popular sailing destinations from Volos are in the west the towns facing each other, Amaliapolis and the small town of Milina, about 20 nautical miles south-east of Volos. Here sailors will find several idyllic bays between the two small offshore islands. The picturesque island of Paleo Trikeri, the coastal town of AG Kyriaki and the small harbour town of Achilleion at the exit of the Gulf of Volos are also highly recommended. Particularly popular in the Sporades are the wonderful fine-sand beaches of Skiathos and the imposing rock formations of Skopelos.

Sailors must keep to the maximum speed of three knots in the harbour.

Information for the sailing trip from Volos

We would like to point out that due to the legal situation in Greece, it is not possible to have charter contracts confirmed in advance at the port office. Greek law requires the original signature of the client on the contracts and the crew list on site. Only then can we present your ship's papers to the port captain. Therefore, please understand that there may be delays due to possible waiting times at the port police. Attention: The Croatian coastal patent is no more valid in Greece since 2023.

Sheltered by the Pelion Peninsula and nestled in a pocket bay of the Pagasitikos Gulf, Volos is a natural harbor that acts as a bridge to the Pelion or Sporades region. A modern port that emerged out of ancient city Iolkos (affiliated with the Argonaut heroes), one can expect a juxtaposition of newer architecture against nostalgic neighborhoods. The combination of sea breeze and Mt. Pelion’s shadow casts a light-hearted aura over the city.

Indulge in long lunch breaks to make the most of the traditional spread; artichokes, seasoned cuttlefish, pepper served sausages and mini dishes weigh down the table. Pair it with Volos’ signature tsipouro, schnapps-like firewater, for an extra kick. Cozy restaurants line the waterfront Kordoni promenade, whereas cobblestoned Ermou, Kontaratou and Ogl streets are the pulse of Volos, featuring lively clusters of coffee, food and live music. To meld with the local community, take a stroll from Argonauts Avenue’s western port to reach the symbolic statue of Argo; a modern imitation of an ancient ship.

In fact, Volos is made for walking – stunning novelty buildings and neo-classical architecture extend from city center to the port and environs. There is also a network of cycle lanes for those seeking a speedier tour. Keep an eye out for Volos Castle, which was once a massive shipbuilding center. Elaborate Church of Agioi Konstantinos and Eleni rival the Byzantine-styled Agia Triada, while Goritsa Hill rises east of Volos to offer a nature-filled view. Historians may turn their attention to west of Volos, where important archaeological sites of Sesklo and Dimini hold remnants of ancient and prehistoric settlements.

Aim to visit on the months of April, May and October for a solid combination of mild weather averaging 23℃ and little rain fall. Temperatures spike in the summer to reach 31℃, although it is matched with high wind speeds.

The area on which Volos sits has been inhabited for more than 3,000 years. Mount Pelion behind the city is said to be the place that gods and humans met in Greek Mythos. Perhaps most famously, Jason is said to have built his trireme Argo to go in search for the Golden Fleece in Iolkos, on which the current port sits.

Over the last seven centuries, Volos has been in the hands of the Ottoman Empire on more than one occasion. A large citadel was built to fend off attacks from the Venetians. It was captured by the Germans in the 1940s and bombed heavily by both sides during World War 2.

In 1955 an earthquake inflicted the most damage to the city, almost flattening it. Only a few mansions and buildings remain from before the earthquake as much of it was rebuilt from scratch. Those after a modern, cosmopolitan vibe won't be disappointed with its nightclubs, restaurants and coffee shops.

Those in search of something less modern can do as generations of Volos residents have done - head for Mount Pelionon the Pelion Peninsula. This is an almost forgotten part of Greece to both Greeks and tourist companies alike. Those in search of the 'true Greece' will find what they seek here. Placid, laid back and almost empty, the Pelion Peninsula is a place where time moves more slowly and you can relax and forget yourself like few other parts of the country during holiday season.

Explore Volos By Renting A Yacht

For those on a Volos yacht charter, this is a great jumping-off point to explore the Pagasetic Gulf (also known as the Pagasitikos Gulf) and Greek island chains beyond.

Taking a bareboat charter or skippered yacht charter you can rent a sailing yacht or motor yacht from the pedestrianised waterfront in Volos Port. Some will fly in to Volos for a Skiathos or Skopelos sailing holiday and can take a ferry from Volos Port on to the islands to begin their sailing holiday.

The Pagasetic Gulf itself is a large, well-protected bay with a narrow entrance - too big to be considered a natural harbour but certainly a lot calmer when the Meltemi gets feisty on the Aegean Sea outside. Cruising around the Pagasitikos Gulf you will find quiet fishing villages and anchorages where you may well spend the evening alone or in quiet, picturesque taverns on your boat rental charter holiday.

Beyond the gulf and just to the east are the Sporades Islands that include the sailing centre of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos. The islands are famed for their long, sandy beaches and laid-back atmosphere. A national marine park around Alonnisos has a variety of marina flora and fauna that will often pay you a visit! Beyond, the Northern Sporades are attractive and enjoyable places for an island-hopping sailing vacation.

Out to the NE of Volos is the three-fingered Chalkadiki Peninsula with their mountains, beaches and extremely laid-back atmosphere. On a longer trip you could head SW to the Cyclades Islands that are both important historically in the history of Greece and major tourist destinations in their own right.

How To Get To Volos

Nea Anchialos National Airport (VOL)

This is served by a few airlines from around Europe. 300km from Athens, it may pay to fly in with a connecting flight from the Greek capital.

Once in Volos airport, a shuttle bus to the main bus station costs just €5 and from there you can take a bus or taxi to the marina.

Marinas In Volos

Unlike many yacht charter bases in Greece such as the Ionian Islands or Dodecanese Islands, Volos hasn't a major marina development.

The marina area of Volos consists of two stretches (Marina A and Marina B) on the pedestrianised Volos Waterfront. The pontoons are administered by Volos Port and vessels are moored stern-to along the waterfront. Your yacht charter company representative will generally meet you in a cafe and help you with the formalities of starting your Volos yacht charter.

You have a choice between a catamaran luxury yacht charter , monohull sailing yacht charter and motor yacht charter on a bareboat charter, crewed yacht charter or skippered charter basis out of Volos, though you will also find day boats such as RIBs and sailing dinghies available.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Volos

As a gateway to the Pagasitikos Gulf, Sporades Islands and Chalkadiki Peninsula, Volos is an ideal departure point for your yacht charter sailing holiday.

7 days - Sporades Islands: Passing (and perhaps pausing on) the Pelion Peninsula, you will cross the strait to SkiathosIsland where you can enjoy the sandy beaches and quaint Skiathos Town. The next day can be spent exploring the south coast in the lee of the Meltemi before heading on to Skopelos (where the Mamma Mia movie was filmed) and then to Alonnisos. After enjoying the east coast of the island and the marine nature reserve you can island hop back to the mainland.

7 days - Chalkadiki Peninsula: There are three fingers or legs to this peninsula Kassandra to the west is full of tourist resorts and can be quite expensive in season but a lot of fun too. Sithonia is a lot quieter with secluded coves, while Athos is a quiet jewel usually only visited by Greek tourists. Out and back you can pause at the Sporades Islands.

14 days - the northern Cyclades: This is a nice journey of island hopping, firstly through the Northern SporadesIslands and then to the southern Sporades island of Skyros, before on the island of Euboea at Karystos with its medieval castles and beautiful beaches. From there you can easily access the northern Cyclades - the islands of Andros, Tinos and Siros are just offshore.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Volos

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. This is ironic as July and August can be the worst times to sail! Both extremely hot air temperatures and often hazardous Meltemi winds can make for big winds sailing when you honestly just want to hide from the heat.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for an Athens yacht charter.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. However, there are often water shortages on the islands and everything looks parched.

Sailing Weather In Volos

April to mid June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, though these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat! Temperatures are from 30s with recent hot days exceeding 40. The northerly Meltemi winds can be fierce and can hit F7 for a solid few days.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sail as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Volos Port administers a summer marina area on Volos Waterfront that is kept for yacht charter companies and boat owners in the city.

The sailing season is quite short in Volos - it being the Northern Aegean Sea you will find that the season starts in mid May and ends in mid October. July and August are the busiest months but the NE Meltemi can be fierce at this time of year. Essentially the best time is in June when the weather isn't so hot and windy and the marinas not so crowded.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Volos

Volos is located on mainland Greece, but that doesn';t mean that it isn't still an excellent base for exploring remote Greek islands and finding some tranquillity. In the immediate vicinity, Skiathos is famed for being popular with a young crowd, and it certainly has an energetic night-life. The next island along, Skopelos, has been described by some as being the most beautiful of all the Greek islands, though, despite it having been inhabited for thousands of years, it is perhaps most famous for being the filming location of the recent first Mamma Mia film.

Volos - 6 day sailing itinerary

This itinerary is a six day itinerary which takes in the best of the Sporades: the beauty of the islands and the beaches, and the best three places to spend the night (namely Skiathos, Skopelos and Loutraki, all for different reasons). In total, it's 127 nM, which means an average of about 21 nM a day, and a fairly leisurely pace. It's only six days because after checking in and getting everything on board it's unlikely you'll have time to do any significant sailing from the home base on your day of arrival – so chill, check out Volos, and we'll depart in the morning. And the boat needs to be returned on the Friday night (so you won't do any sailing on the day of checking out either).

Kiriaki

The prevailing wind is a North-easterly, around Force 3 or 4 (except when the Meltemi winds kick in for a few days at a time at the height of the season – so check the weather forecasts carefully if you're sailing in July and August). Being in a huge bay (the Pagasetic gulf, to be precise), the winds might not be so strong as you broad reach your way down, but you'll certainly feel the wind in your face once we get island hopping.

If time allows, you can nose into one of the bays around the island of Paleo Trikeri, where there's a couple of nice beaches, but otherwise we're following the coastline round, keeping it on our port side as we go around the headland, and then pulling in at the first marina you come to.

This is Kiriaki, a small, sleepy fishing village which is now a place for tourists who like to be off the beaten track and who enjoy the calm of the sea and the idyllic islands. There's a fine beach to while away the rest of the sunshine, or the local village of Trikeri is a short walk up to the top of the hill, where they serve the freshest of fresh fish in abundance, with fine views over the sea. This is the life...

Loutraki

From Kiriaki, we're heading further along the coast and out, in a North-easterly direction. The island on the horizon is Skiathos, which we'll skirt around the South side of. We'll be coming back to later in the week (so feel free to have a quick nosey at Skiathos town as you go past). There are over 75 brilliant beaches dotted right around Skiathos island, so it might be a fine place to stop for lunch or a break.

Continuing further in the same direction, we’re heading to the small marina at Loutraki, near Glossa, on the Western side of the island of Skopelos.

Loutraki is another remote village which people head to for the beauty and tranquillity of the area, and is most famous for being the filming location for the film 'Mamma Mia' – so watch it in advance to whet your appetite if you have the chance. There's a beautiful beach and a number of decent tavernas, or you can walk fifteen minutes to the nearby bigger, grander village of Glossa. Being on the West coast, Loutraki is a place where you can sit and enjoy watching the sunset, ideally with a well-earned drink.

Skopelos

If it's hot and sunny, you could check out the beaches at Agios Ioannis or Glysteri for a cooling break, but then onwards to the white-washed houses, narrow streets, medieval castles, monasteries and churches of the capital of the island.

Skopelos town is genuinely a wonder to behold, and the view of it from the sea is almost magical. Legend has it that the town was originally founded by the son of the God Dionysos and Princess Ariadne of Crete, who used the island as a giant vineyard – but it's main purpose now is for tourism (and growing olives). The town is a brilliant place to explore on foot, and you can get lost in the maze of cobbled streets and alleyways. There's a great range of tavernas and bars (and even a night club), as well as a good range of shops to get your provisions stocked up from. Life moves at quite a slow and relaxed pace, and Skopelos is a great place to sit and people-watch.

Skiathos

Neighbouring islands, it's a fairly straightforward sail to get from one to the other, and there are ferries that make the journey on a regular basis. They normally head over the North of the island of Skopelos, so we're heading around the South. Head East out of the marina and keep the coastline on your starboard side as you follow it South, then West, then North. You'll notice you're sailing in all the directions, so you'll need to keep adjusting your sail trim to keep pace.

There's a few beaches and bays to explore – some have tavernas to grab a bite to eat, but there’s also the chance that you'll spot seals and dolphins in others, if you keep a decent lookout. Once you';re past Panormos, you should be able to see Skiathos and can head in a North-westerly direction, reaching across the prevailing wind. Skiathos Town is on the starboard side of the island as you look at it, so head for that sort of area, then bimble your way into the marina, which is to the East of the old town.

Skiathos is a very pretty old town with plenty of bars, restaurants and shops, and if you're planning on having one big night with the whole crew, here is the place to do it.

Orei

We're heading South-west down the channel to a small farming village of Orei, which has been inhabited since around 5,000 BC, but is mainly notable for having a couple of historic castles and a giant marble statue of a bull. There’s also a reasonable range of restaurants and bars on the waterfront, and if you’re still interested in beaches, there’s of course some of those within easy reach too, and a reef that is good for snorkelling and scuba diving.

Volos

From Orei, it’s almost a straight line Northwards to Volos, sailing up towards Kiriaki (where you spent the first night), and onwards into the Pagasetic gulf, then up to Volos. You’ll likely be reaching against the prevailing wind, and it’s possible to do it in one tack, but it’s obviously more fun to put in a few tacks and to keep your crew on their toes, so maybe you can circumnavigate the island of Paleo Trikeri on the way?

Arriving back in Volos, you’ll need to visit the fuel berth (which you should be able to spot by the long queue of other charter yachts also waiting to be refuelled, or it’s on the south-west side of the fishing boat harbour, to the West of the marina). Once you're full, take the boat to about the area you got her from, moor her up one last time, and then salute the harbour-master as you shut down the engines. Someone will be along to inspect the boat tonight, but you'll be sleeping aboard tonight, and will complete the formal check-out tomorrow morning, before departing the boat, and letting her drift off into the sunset with another skipper and another crew.

If you’ve not yet seen much of Volos, then now is a good time to step ashore – it's a nice town in its own right, and there's enough to see, do, eat and drink to keep you busy And then you're off. Hopefully you’re returning with really fond memories of the Sporades, with better friendships with all of the crew, and a giant smile on your face. Safe travels home, and we'll hopefully spot you on PlainSailing.com in a few weeks time as you start to plan your next big adventure. Godspeed.

Sailing Conditions

Greece Sailing - Wind Conditions

In summer, the prevailing wind is a Force 3 or Force 4 which arrives from the North-east, and allows you to make decent speed and excellent progress from island to island (and to lay off the motor for the best parts of the day).

Things get more challenging later in the season, when the hot, seasonal Meltemi winds start to arrive – the are slightly stronger winds which arrive from the North or North-west from late June to August, and which can be anything from Force 5 to Force 8 (so make sure you check the weather forecast before setting sail on what looks like an innocent day!)

Generally, the Meltemi pass after a couple of days, and the prevailing North-easterly winds will return.

Volos - Average Temperature

Marina Details - Volos Port

Volos port is shared amongst commercial vessels, local fishermen, and, of course, sail tourism. All this makes the marina a hive of activity, and, coupled with locals and tourists enjoying an evening stroll along the marina road, the whole area seems alive. The facilities for sailors are a little dated (though it has all the usual amenities) but there's a whole townful of shops, restaurants and amenities which are within very easy reach, and you can even buy fish fresh direct from the fishermen each morning!

If your flights don't quite match that schedule, you might need to spend a day or two on dry land before getting aboard. We recommend the following places to stay: Hotel Phillipos , Aegli Hotel or the 4-star Volos Palace .

Are you ready to discover our unique region in Greece?

yacht charter volos greece

Modern Volos is a relatively new and vibrant city. It is mainly built on the area of the ancient city of Iolcus. Iolcus was the homeland of the mythical ancient Greek hero, Jason.

This is also where he and the Argonauts began their voyage on their ship, the Argo, in search of the Golden Fleece.

PAGASITIKOS GULF

Pagasitikos Gulf

The Pagasitikos Gulf is a round-shaped gulf in the region of Magnesia, with the city of Volos as its main port. The gulf is embraced by Mount Pelion, with an opening to the Aegean Sea. Pelion is an area of incredible beauty - a high mountain with abundant fauna and flora, combined with stunning beaches.

The Pagasitikos Gulf is ideal for relaxed sailing, as the sea is relatively calm, with gentle winds that are channelled down from Pelion. Sailing here will give you the opportunity to discover the captivating beauty of its many unspoilt bays, with their teal-coloured waters.

SPORADES ISLANDS

Skiathos is a popular tourist destination, with its own airport, all necessary tourist facilities, a vibrant nightlife and over 60, chiefly sandy, beaches.

Skopelos is the greenest island in Greece. The island has an unrivalled natural beauty and ecological balance, with its lush emerald forest and clear blue sea and sky.

Alonissos is renowned for its unique Marine Park, where the Mediterranean Monk Seal and other marine animals can be spotted.

Yacht Charter Volos

Volos is a large and busy port city on the northern sores of the Pagasitikos Bay. It is the gateway to the Pelion Peninsula and the Sporades islands. Just as Jason and the Argonauts set sail from here eons ago, you too can rent a boat and follow in their wake. Volos is both a commercial port and a harbour for leisure craft. Its long beachfront lined with cafes and restaurants is the place for an evening stroll. With Mount Pelion as its backdrop and plenty of mountain villages to visit, it is worth stopping off for a day or too, before sailing on.

Known for its appetizing seafood meze taken with a glass of tsipouro, there are many places to while away the afternoon in this manner; just like a local. The tsipouradkio is a practically a Volos institution. There is also a buzzing nightlife, a few good museums and several cultural events throughout the year.

To the east of Volos lies the Pelion peninsula. Its mountainous ridge drops dramatically into the sea on the eastern side whereas and the western side is gentler. Sailing around the Pagasitkos Bay, you can stop off at lovely villages and bays all down the peninsula.

Leaving Pagasitikos Bay, you can sail out to the Sporades islands . Skiathos , Skopelos and Alonissos.

Connections

Volos is well connected. There is an airport at nearby Nea Anchialos about 25 km away. The airport has charter connections with some Greek and European cities. Bus and train lines from other Greek cities and villages come frequently into Volos and there are good connections to the rest of the Pelion peninsula too.

Car and passenger ferries to the Sporades Island leave regularly from here.

Sailing Conditions

The Pagasitikos Gulf is ideal for relaxed sailing, as the sea is relatively calm and the wind is friendly. There are also hundreds of places to find some shelter if the wind picks up. The ‘meltemi’ which blows in the summer usually doesn’t affect the conditions here, as the bay is protected to the east by the Pelion Peninsula. It is rather the offshore and south winds that can blow up. One could spend the whole charter week sailing around Pagasitkos Bay.

The Sporades

The Sporades begin with Skiathos - the closest to the mainland, with an airport, and the busiest - followed by Skopelos and Alonissos, which are larger, quieter and more rugged. Generally, conditions in the Sporades for sailing are calm, with the islands less affected by the northern wind (the meltemi ) that buffets other parts of the Aegean in the summer months.

There is no shortage of delightful and secluded bays to anchor on all the islands.

Around Alonissos and the smaller islands further east is The National Marine Park of Alonnisos Northern Sporades set up to protect, among other endangered species, the Mediterranean Monk Seal. The restrictions on yachts and tourism mean the island of Piperi and its coastal waters are out of bounds.

The area was made famous by the film musical Mamma Mia, filmed in these parts. Now with regular flights from many European cities direct to Volos airport, and an increasing number of idyllic anchorages and tranquil bays, more and more people are discovering this relatively unspoilt and delightful sailing area. For those flying via Athens, Thessaloniki or Skiathos we can arrange direct transfers to the port.

About Odyssey Sailing history Francesca & Panagiotis

Volos, the Sporades & beyond...

In Greek mythology, the ambitious Jason set off on his journey to find the golden fleece from Volos in his ship, the Argo , which features in our logo. This emblematic vessel encapsulates the spirit of exploration and adventure that defines Odyssey Sailing – a tribute to the past that inspires every journey we undertake.

The Sporades islands were made famous by the film musical Mamma Mia, filmed in these parts. Now with regular flights from many European cities direct to Volos airport , and an increasing number of idyllic anchorages and tranquil bays, more and more people are discovering this relatively unspoilt and delightful sailing area. For those flying via Athens, Thessaloniki or Skiathos we can arrange direct transfers to the port.

The annals of the Aegean and Ionian Seas are inscribed with countless sagas that have forever left their mark on the tapestry of history. The rhythmic cadence of waves against the shores served as the backdrop for epic naval encounters that sculpted the destinies of empires. The windswept cliffs and enigmatic coves still echo with the faint whispers of pirates who once navigated these perilous waters, bequeathing a legacy brimming with tales of mystery and derring-do. Through the Aegean’s crystalline expanse, valiant souls embarked on mythological odysseys reminiscent of Heracle’s daring labours and Theseus’ courageous expedition to confront the Minotaur.

Among these tales, Homer’s Odyssey emerges as a crowning jewel. The resolute figure of Odysseus, embarked on a ten-year sojourn across uncharted waters, reflects an eternal truth: that life’s essence resides in the journey itself, not solely in reaching the destination. It is an age-old wisdom, seamlessly woven into the fabric of human understanding since ancient times.

Just as Odysseus battled the seas and faced myriad trials on his path homeward, our very company name, Odyssey Sailing , pays homage to this profound insight. Through the ebb and flow of waves and winds, we seek to capture the essence of the voyage—the endless discovery, transformation, and liberation that unfurl upon the open sea.of

On a Volos catamaran charter with Borrow a Boat you can explore much of the Sporades Islands and Aegean Sea within an easy sail. Whatever you want from a Volos yacht charter, from its beautiful beaches and excellent food to its vibrant culture, a catamaran charter Volos is going to be an unforgettable experience.

Volos is a major city on mainland Greece that sits at the base of Mount Pelion, a mountain that has great importance in Ancient Greek mythos. Jason and his fleet are said to have set off on his Argonauts adventure from a port on the Pagasitic Gulf close to where Volos sits today.

The city is a major port city, with Volos Port the main sea gateway to northern Greece. Unlike so many cities such Athens, it doesn’t actively court tourism. The harbour front marina has a number of floating pontoons from which you will take your charter yacht on your sailing holiday. As such Volos is more of an authentic tase of Greece than you will find elsewhere. You will find excellent bars, restaurants and nightclubs catering to the Greek crowd rather than the international as with so many others in the region.

Pagasitikos Gulf

Many of those on a yacht charter holiday fly into Volos as an alternative to starting their sailing vacation in the Northern Sporades islands. The Pagasetic Gulf (Pagasitikos Gulf) is large and well protected from the bigger winds on the Aegean Sea, and as such gives a gentle introduction to sailing before you get out to the Sporades Islands.

The Pelion Peninsula to the east of Volos is a completely different pace of life. A place where even the gods of mythos used to relax, the Pelion Peninsula with Mount Pelion has barely picked up the pace in the intervening millennia! You will find quiet fishing villages where you may end up sipping ouzo and eating meze with the locals of an afternoon…

Island Hopping

Before you reach the mouth of the Pagasetic Gulf you will find a Greek island with a difference - Paleo Trikeri. Paleo Trikeri is a small island with thousands of citrus and olive trees, and just one village with around 20 permanent residents. Unlike so many Greek islands, it is not a tourist trap in any way and another opportunity to relax in ‘authentic Greece’.

Beyond the Pagasitic Gulf you will reach the Northern Sporades islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos. These have attracted tourism (especially with the Hollywood movie Mama Mia) but are a lot more laid back than that of the Cyclades Islands for example. You will find quiet anchorages and beautful bays as well as sandy beaches that will entertain you.

Altogether, Volos as a base is an unlikely but nonetheless excellent spot to begin a perfect boat charter holiday. Book your catamaran charter Volos with Borrow a Boat today!

Crewed Catamaran Charters from Volos

You don’t need to worry about being an experienced sailor or even sailing the boat out of Volos with Borrow a Boat! A Volos crewed catamaran charter on a motor yacht or sailing catamaran can mean you do as much or as little physically sailing the yacht as you like on your yacht charter holiday.

A skippered yacht charter or will mean that the skipper will be aboard with their own cabin to attend to all your needs. A crewed yacht charter or gulet charter will involve one or two crew on the gulet charter who will cook, sail and make suggestions as to your best destinations on your sailing itinerary. With their local knowledge, even if you’re an experienced sailor you can enjoy a perfect yacht charter holiday.

One of the advantages of a crewed yacht charter sailing vacation is that you can go longer distances from the yachtcharter base. The Dodecanese Islands are within reach on a two week sailing trip, as are the Northern Cyclades on the Aegean Sea.

As to you? You can just enjoy the breezes and views on your luxury yacht charter , or if you fancy learning a bit about sailing, help the skipper or crew to get the boat from A-B.

A Volos crewed yacht charter will cost a little more (typically €150 a day for a skipper and €100 per crew member) and it’s the done thing to thank them with a tip at the end of the week.

Bareboat Catamaran Charter From Volos

A bareboat yacht charter holiday will mean that you can take the charter yacht out on your own. Generally for vessels up to 20 metres LOA on a sailing license such as an RYA Day Skipper or ASA 104 Bareboat certificate, you will have total responsibility for the yacht.

You will need to think about your sailing itinerary, victualling, possible secondary ports should a marina be full, as well as issues like weather and mooring fees.

On a bareboat catamaran charter you will be asked to pay for insurance in the form of a security deposit to the chartercompany on departure or through buying charter insurance before you leave the yacht charter base.

Types of Catamarans Available For Rent Or Charter In Volos:

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below charter yacht types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the catamaran was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Sailing Catamaran : Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious type of sailing boat, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter luxury yacht is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull sailing yacht. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat, the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the cabin as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Motor Catamaran: These motor yacht catamarans are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam of these motor boats also mean more deck space and as they don’t have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Catamaran Sailing Itineraries From Volos

On your Volos crewed catamaran boat rental or bareboat charter sailing holiday you can explore the Pagasetic Gulf and Northern Sporades and even on to the Chalkidiki Peninsula. Here we suggest a 7 day sailing holiday and a 14 day yachtcharter holiday on your charter yacht:

7 days - Northern Sporades sailing holiday: On this charter holiday you will not sail very far on any given day, but have plenty of time ashore. As a first leg from Volos you stay on the island of Paleo Trikeri as a first port of call. On out to Skiathos and then Skopelos for your next nights ashore, and then a day on the marine reserve of Alonnisos. Return to mainland Greece with a pause at Port Vase Pescuit on the Pelion Peninsula. Head inland to explore this laid back and beautiful part of the world. Nea Mintzela on the western edge of the Pagasetic Gulf will be your final port of call before returning to Volos Port for handover.

14 days - Chalkidiki Peninsula: Your first leg will be to Skiathos in the Sporades Islands before a longer leg out to the Chalkidiki Peninsula in Northern Greece. Here you will find a delightful combination of beautiful beaches and tourist resorts as well as the Mount Athos monastic community where women have been banned from entering for hundreds of years since its foundation. This mix of modern pleasures and ancient mysticism make for a very different experience of Greece to much of the rest of the country. On the way back, set sail for the Dodecanese island of Limnos and then Lesvos before heading to the southern Sporades island of Skyros. Via Skopelos in the Northern Sporades, back to the charter base at Volos Port.

Do You Need A Sailing License To Charter A Catamaran In Volos?

If you are on a skippered catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail out of Volos, you can just turn up at the marina and go.

You do need a sailing license if you are on a bareboat catamaran charter and in some countries such as Greece a day skipper or ICC may not be enough for boats over 45 feet in length, you will need to check with the charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that will allow you to charter in most countries:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of Rhodes (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival.

If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company and they can typically send someone from the charter base

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the catamaran before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won't require licences.
