Lürssen’s 90m expedition yacht NORN delivered

By Steph Loseby   5 May 2023

Following her launch in February earlier this year, the highly secretive 90m (295 ft) superyacht NORN , formerly known as Project 1601, has been delivered by iconic German builder Lürssen  and has since left the facilities to embark on her maiden voyage.

The specifications and amenities for superyacht NORN have been kept a closely guarded secret since her construction began in 2018. However, we know her distinct, geometrical exterior was helmed by Norwegian designer and naval architect Espen Oeino whilst her yet-to-be-revealed interiors are the works of Dölker+Voges Design and are expected to mirror the yacht’s exterior design.

The brief required a superyacht that excels in design and engineering whilst also catering to maximum comfort onboard. Described by the shipyard as a project with “striking design" and "extraordinary features”, superyacht NORN has a utilitarian character, with an oblique reverse bow, narrow rectangular windows, planar surfaces and angular corners.

Built for a repeat owner, superyacht NORN is a replacement vessel for the iconic 70m (232ft) yacht SKAT , which was delivered in 2002.

Sharing similar design cues, we can expect that brand new superyacht NORN may follow an alike minimalist interior approach with a variety of light, bright and airy social spaces onboard. There is also expected to be a signature panoramic sky lounge, an additional area onboard where guests can soak up the superyacht lifestyle.

The brief required a superyacht that excels in design and engineering to provide seagoing comfort for the family.

As a custom-built 3,600 GT explorer yacht , NORN is guaranteed to have a helipad, closing the bridge between land and sea for guests onboard. She also features zero-speed stabilizers, an exterior cinema and a liftable pool floor with dancefloor illumination to allow a unique and memorable cruising experience for her guests. Electronic anchoring in sensitive and remote areas is made easy thanks to the use of a dynamic positioning system, ensuring that the seabed is protected regardless of water depth.

Norn was one of two yachts launched by the German shipyard in February following the grand reveal of the 145m (475ft) Project Luminance , which is the eighth largest yacht to be built by Lürssen and has just successfully finished her sea trials  last week.

With over 10 projects in-build currently, Lürssen is expected to deliver the 122m (400ft) superyacht PROJECT JAG later this year whilst the 114 (378ft) superyacht PROJECT COSMOS will be completed in 2024.

It is not believed that superyacht NORN will be available to charter upon delivery. If you’re looking for a private yacht charter for your next vacation and you'd like to rent a superyacht of a similar calibre, you can view and compare all Lürssen superyachts for charter .

Royal Huisman

SUPERSIZED SAILING YACHTS BY ROYAL HUISMAN

Two of the world’s ten largest sailing yachts, 79m / 206ft ATHENA (90m / 295ft including bowsprit) and 81m / 266ft SEA EAGLE (formerly SEA EAGLE II), are Royal Huisman builds. Currently “under construction”, 85m / 280ft Project 410 will join the top 10 upon delivery. And a number of breathtaking concept designs such as the world’s largest sloop APEX 850 and the dyna-rig LOTUS are also eager to contribute to this list. Designed by internationally renowned architects and the shipyard team, these concepts are unique examples of what can be realized.

Royal Huisman is at home with any style and any design: classic, contemporary, timeless schemes, combined with dyna-rigs, single mast, wing sails, a three-masted arrangement – created by your designer of preference: start dreaming, because we love to build it…

The next Royal Huisman supersized sailingyacht will be a fitting match in the world’s top 10; possibly even becoming the largest in this elite circle. She will join the existing Royal Huisman-built, thoroughbred “supersized sailboats”, and, as every Royal Huisman yacht benefits from knowledge gained during previous builds, she would be the finest yet.

In general, the comfort of motoryachts is mostly enjoyed by their owners while on “location A” or “location B”, such as a pretty marina or idyllic anchorage. Sailing yachts provide the same enjoyment, but are also much (more) fun while travelling from “A” to “B” or even reach remote corners of our beautiful planet.

They offer the stimulating experience of seeing the sails hoisted and catching the wind, and the slender bow cutting through the waves to pick up speed. Even those who are not keen on heeling angles, will be pleased to discover that new technologies exist to reduce lateral movement and heeling angle substantially.

In addition to the thrill of sailing and the satisfaction of Royal Huisman’s bespoke quality, future owners will also enjoy the “green footprint” of their yacht and the significant efficiency advantage of free propulsion power (the wind!).

Last but not least, “energy-neutral”-mode will prove a much-appreciated feature: spinning the propellers to generate more than sufficient electrical power for all board systems such as air conditioning, and for re-charging the batteries to enjoy “silent mode” while at anchor.

For some, these features might sound like uncharted waters that require a lot more development, but not so for the shipyard. Royal Huisman pioneered hybrid propulsion with the game-changing ketch ETHEREAL (the world’s first hybrid superyacht) in 2009, and has since continued to refine its technological lead in some remarkable projects.

Jan Timmerman, CEO of Royal Huisman: “Sustainability is crucially important for all of us and for future generations. Yacht owners and the yachting sector obviously want to play their part by reducing environmental impact and by limiting the use of valuable natural resources. It is a fact that the level of achievement resulting from these efforts can vary greatly. At Royal Huisman, we know that some owners positively encourage their design and build teams to make a difference by, for example, making their superyachts more efficient, or by applying renewable energy sources.

Propulsion by wind will always beat energy consumption onboard motoryachts, even when great reductions in fuel consumption and other efficiency gains are achieved. In addition, wind energy is ‘free’ – of charge, of fumes, and of noise. And driving is great fun, too…!

Unlike most shipyards, Royal Huisman has been building vessels with sails since it was founded in 1884. As a result of this long history our team benefits from an immense accumulation of experience and expertise. We have readily joined forces with highly knowledgeable owners such as Bill Joy, who provided valuable input and encouraged us to take big steps towards the delivery of ever-increasing efficiency. His yacht, Ethereal, was the world’s first hybrid superyacht (delivered by Royal Huisman in 2009) and she remains a fine example. More recently, the owners of Foftein and Juliet decided to convert their yachts to “hybrid”, to benefit from the advantages of being ‘energy neutral’ and ‘future-proof’.”

nero profile

Nero: The 90m new build with an old-world soul and neo-classic styling

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the classically styled 90.1-metre Nero has been sailing the seas for centuries. Dig a little deeper and you'll find she is an architectural confection of old and new, as Holly Margerrison discovers.

Nero is a yacht of many secrets. For years, she was home to a plump, ginger stowaway from the Chinese shipyard she was built in. Named Nelson, the cat stayed with the owner on board, only going ashore if guests were not fond of the feline, and he even had his own chair in the wheelhouse that he scratched to pieces. Everyone gave up trying to replace the armchair and eventually threw a blanket over it.

Frederica Findlater of Burgess recounts a beautiful photo of the yacht taken from the stern. You’d be mistaken for thinking Nero was the subject of the image. Instead, sat on the capping rail, tail straight down, is Nelson, lapping up dusk’s soft light. Oh, to be the stowaway on Nero and to know the stories she holds.

Several years and two substantial refits later, these nostalgic traces can still be found throughout – if you know where to look. On a bright day off the coast of Monaco, I tour the modern-classic build, witnessing the wealth of details that make her such a revered yacht.

For example: Tucked behind the door in the owner’s suite is the epitome of British naval power. Poised high on the top shelf is a bust of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson (from which the cat borrowed its name) – a charismatic legend who led the British fleet to victory against the much larger French and Spanish fleets in the Battle of Trafalgar.

Follow the compass-embossed marquetry a little further along the deck and you uncover the next jewel in Nero 's trove. Here lies another bust, this time of Lord Byron, a figure heavily connected to the Greek War of Independence and the author behind the 1814 poem The Corsair . The poem tells the story of a wild and ruthless pirate, and served as inspiration for the name of one of the largest privately owned vessels in the 1930s, a 103-metre classic named Corsair IV that was itself the inspiration for Nero .

These treasures, along with model yachts that evoke the spirit of sea battles in their golden age, imbue Nero with a maritime history that goes much deeper than her clipper bow, black hull and iconic yellow funnel. It was British entrepreneur Neil Taylor who commissioned and designed Nero, initially setting out to restore a true classic. But when a suitable donor yacht wasn't available, he built a replica design of Corsair IV, owned by finance and industry icon JP Morgan in the 1930s.

Taylor inserted himself in the traditions of early 20th-century yachting and created something which both looked and felt like a time-honoured yacht. He pays his respects to JP Morgan across Nero with ubiquitous intertextual links. For a start, Corsair Yachts , the yard that Taylor created specifically for his build, is a nod to Morgan’s Corsair series of yachts. The bust of Nelson also honours the financier's fascination with the naval figure, who spent his life collecting ephemera and memorabilia.

John Leonida, consulting superyacht industry advisor from LP Squared Ltd, shared much of his extensive research into Nero . He said: “The level of detail is extraordinary. It’s the bringing together of so many nautical themes that makes this such a spectacular boat.” Speaking of the figurehead of Byron, he added: “It’s an easter egg. If you don’t know it’s there, you don’t know that’s Byron. It adds another dimension.”

Her exterior is equally as captivating. As Captain Paul Bell explains, her sheer line “[rises] up as if it were an old-fashioned yacht. It’s taken from the time, so it’s architecturally correct. It’s the only boat I’ve worked on that has one of those, apart from an old-fashioned sailing yacht. She feels like a mix of a motor yacht and a sailing yacht because of her full-length keel. When she’s sitting at anchor like this, she feels like a sailing yacht.” He adds: “It’s quite relaxed, it’s not like a modern-day superyacht.”

It wasn’t always so relaxed inside and, for this, interior designer Laura Pomponi is to thank. As she puts it, she “transformed the yacht from a gentleman’s club to a lady of the seas”. Pomponi was tasked with the 2016 refit in MB92 in Barcelona, under a new owner whose brief was “contemporary, classic elegance”. Pomponi explains the biggest challenge of this refit was balancing a fresh aesthetic while “keeping the soul of the vessel”. To accomplish this, she introduced considerable light, cream interiors that are anything but clinical, and an amalgamation of cosy textures throughout.

Light in colour yet springy underfoot, the handmade bouclé carpet on the main deck invites guests to take their time as they walk across it. When it came to sourcing the fabric (of which there was 3.2km in the first refit), she explains “we pick up a little bit here, a little bit there. We don’t like well-known brands, we look for something special”.

Prior to the refit, purple, black and gold tones were a common theme on board, and they have since been replaced with nautical-hued furnishings, while dark high-gloss woods have been substituted for lime-washed oak and brass fittings have been stripped and dipped in chrome to resemble silver.

The mix of old and new artwork, chosen in collaboration with the owner and sourced predominantly from Italy and America, heightens the maritime theme with a contrast between tall ships and steamships.

The result of the first refit? A tactile, retro yacht where guests are encouraged to enjoy the space. Not cavernous yet also not claustrophobic, Nero encapsulates all that is to evoke “quiet luxury” – not defined by the amount it cost to build her, nor her refit costs.

Fast forward to 2021, when Pomponi’s expertise was called on once again. This time, the brief was more technical and focused on a wellness boat that would appeal to charter clients, aligning with an upgraded programme.

With this in mind, the snug was converted into a self-serving gym on the top deck and the previous gym was converted into a beauty saloon-come-massage room. They also changed the loose furniture and the owner opted for new colours, allowing Pomponi to weave in greens and yellows amongst the teal and blue. The sofas, designed and upholstered by the studio, demand to be sat on – the level of formality stripped in favour of ergonomic design. The floor surrounding the skylounge bar was also changed to wood to be more universally appealing.

The gym was Pomponi’s challenge for the 2021 refit, not least due to the technical constraints of the camber and the sheer of the floor. To make the ultra-modern kinesis fit, her team removed the floor and replaced it with technical cork panels, which are also easier to maintain. She then harmonised the contemporary and classic ambience with glass mirrors produced by an Italian company, Sicis, that specialises in glass mosaics. The mirrored cabinets are coated to give an antique effect.

In a testament to how the boat flows, this “quiet luxury” extends to the service provided by the unobtrusive yet attentive crew. They refute the formality of a silver service associated with a yacht of this size in favour of a more personable approach.

While little is known about the name behind Nero , there are certainly some characters who tell her multifaceted story. Nelson – both the feline and the naval figure – certainly have a part to play in this. For now, Nero will play host to charter guests – next stop Tarragona, before the Antigua Yacht Show.

Philippe Briand unveils 90m self-sufficient sailing yacht

The new design is a thoroughbred sailing yacht that pays homage to the true values of sailing….

Image for article Philippe Briand unveils 90m self-sufficient sailing yacht

In a market where there are a growing number of ‘sailing yachts’ that require assistance from engines while underway, Philippe Braind has unveiled a new thoroughbred 90m sailing yacht concept that pays homage to the true values of sailing. The ‘green’ movement is upon us and it is something that Briand and his team are fully on board with, which is why the new SY300 project has been designed to be fully self-sufficient.

“I am a purist at heart,” says Briand. “Every Philippe Briand design is guided by the golden principles of balance, efficiency and performance on the water, from the single-handed ocean sailing boats that I raced to victory in my early career, to some of the world’s best-known sailing superyachts. Staying true to our name, this SY300 design showcases a yacht with purpose that is in keeping with the authentic spirit of sailing. I picture it being ideal for a passionate sailor who wants to stay in touch with the water and the power of the wind. They could even take the helm of the yacht themselves.”

Being fully wind propelled, the SY300 is, according to Briand, driven by the pursuit of efficiency, rather than aesthetics. Although the design itself is minimalistic, it is also rather striking and its cleanliness is, without a doubt, a nod to the project’s ‘green aesthetic’ and grass roots approach to sailing.

90m sailing yacht

The conventional dual-masted sailing rig has been devised to not only complement the design, but also for performance with the inclusion of an upwind sail area of 3,560msq and a downwind sail area of 6,600msq, including a 3,500m2 spinnaker. The SY300’ s hydrodynamic performance means that power could be harnessed through underwater turbines to charge the batteries on board. If this were the case and 50 per cent of the energy was captured, this would be the same as having a 500kW generator on board, while maintaining a speed of approximately 15 knots.

Looking at the current sailing yacht market in numbers, it’s no secret that it’s a corner of the market that needs some stabilising activity. But, it shouldn’t be considered as a conventional part of the new build market, more so a niche within a niche, with its own pool of potential owners.

90m sailing yacht

While the figures do appear sluggish, the data collected by The Superyacht Agency shows that between 2014 and 2018, there was an average increase of 1.4 per cent year on year delivery figures in the sailing yacht market. In 2019, the order book shows that an optimistic 25 sailing yachts are scheduled for delivery, three of which have already been launched. According to Superyacht Intelligence, there are 45 sailing yachts of 30m+ on the books with a cumulative LOA of 1995.15m.

The green agenda is gradually building speed and as more designers, shipyards, owners and industry stakeholders take up the charge with projects such as SY300, more will follow.

SY300 (90m) by Philippe Briand

Sy300 - a massive 90m ketch-rigged sailing yacht design by philippe briand..

SY300 wants to be a green superyacht. The concept sees an underwater turbine to charge the batteries when the yacht sails. When the turbine produces 50 % of its energy it is equivalent to a 500 kW diesel generator. Moreover, the yacht has an electric engine for the propulsion. A lifting keel helps to reach shallow waters.

The yacht carries a sail area of 3,560 sqm (upwind), a downwind sail area of 6,600 sqm with a 3,500 sqm spinnaker.

SY300 Sailing Yacht Philippe Briand

The impressive flybridge has a size of 112 sqm and measures 14.80 meters in length. 14 guests can enjoy this area during sailing trips.

The big tender garage is located on the main deck forward and can host a 10m tender plus two smaller tenders.

SY300 Sailing Yacht Philippe Briand

SY300 features a full-beam owners’ suite in the middle of the main deck with a private terrace.

The guest and crew cabins are on the lower deck. There are six double cabins for the guests and eight double cabins for the crew and one cabin for the officer. Crew and guests have separate stairs.
