2022 World Superyacht Awards winners

Published on May 22nd, 2022 by Editor -->

The 17th annual edition of the BOAT International World Superyacht Awards recognizes the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the most remarkable luxury yachts from across the world.

The winners of the 2022 awards include multiple categories for motor and sail, with the title of Sailing Yacht of the Year awarded to the entrant that is considered by the judges to be the most notable of the class winners in this year’s sailing yacht categories.

These two category winners were the 44.6-metre sloop Path , built by Baltic Yachts in Finland to the design of Bremerhaven-based judel/vrolijk & co design and Engineering, and the smaller 35.8 metre Perseverance 1 , from the drawing board of the Netherlands-based Dykstra Naval Architects and also built by Baltic Yachts with interior design by deVosdeVries Design.

Both yachts were conceived as fast cruisers with the aim of circumnavigating the globe in stages and, as their owners both invested a great deal of thought and experience into their designs, choosing the winner was a difficult task for the judges.

boat world superyacht awards

During discussions it was clear that although the judges admired Path as an enviably well-built and designed cruiser/racer, and praised her for her significant use of solar power, they narrowly selected the smaller Perseverance 1 as the Sailing Yacht of the Year.

This was largely due to the more single-minded “keep it simple” approach to cruising remote areas that drove the design of Perseverance 1, along with her attractive combination of traditional looks with exceptional sailing performance.

Additionally, she was praised for her efficient diesel-electric propulsion system and well-integrated technology that takes her batteries to full charge in just 4.5 hours and permits eight to nine hours of silent running at anchor. – Full report

SUPERYACHT AWARDS

Winner of the 2021 World Superyacht Awards

The world superyacht awards

The 16th annual  BOAT International World Superyacht Awards  took place in Monaco on Sunday, September 5th at the Monte-Carlo Sporting Complex. The World Superyacht Awards were created to recognize the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the most incredible luxury yachts from around the world. This event is known for its credibility, prestige, and glamor. It is a true honor to all those that are nominated and those that win.

The incredible yacht  BROADWATER  was originally built by  Feadship  in 1994. Her refit was done by Royal Huisman’s Huisfit yard in Amsterdam. The star of this refit is  Adam Voorhees , refit exterior and interior designer. Her interior was transformed from highly varnished woodwork, traditional moldings and leather furniture to a very spacious, bright, and light, extremely modern style while still being comfortable. Adam Voorhees is responsible for the owner’s previous yacht’s interior design for which he earned similar accolades.

Exterior REFit

The owner purchased this  Feadship  in late 2018 and put together a dream team that included a designer, two captains, and a project manager. This hand-picked team not only got the job done, but did it so well they received international recognition. This team finished the new superyacht BROADWATER with very few delays considering they were battling many restrictions from COVID-19 in 2020.

One of the largest changes to the vessel was the four-meter hull extension and transom redesign that expanded the aft deck and allowed for a beach club. The beach club addition included a bar, seating and dayhead. This extension accommodates al fresco activities from dining and entertaining to watersports and ease of water access. The previously inaccessible flat roof protecting the original bridge deck aft became part of the sundeck. This allowed the addition of the daybed and redesign of the lounge area fitted with a custom dining table, bar and large spa pool. The sundeck is one of the crew’s favorite parts of the boat now.

Interior Refit

On the main deck, the goal was to lighten up the interior from the previous dark woodwork.  Designer Adam Voorhees  added freeform furniture and organic shapes to create an atmosphere of casual movement within the main salon and dining area. The uniqueness of the furniture ties in the gorgeous artwork throughout. In each of the staterooms there are one-of-a-kind pieces above the headboards with different textures and colors to bring a special feel to each of the Feadship’s staterooms.

When you step foot into the main salon you feel more awake from the bright white walls, the light interior furniture, and the pops of colors on the paintings. This space is sure to liven up anyone’s mood. The design is inspirational to create something modern while keeping it comfortable and cozy at the same time. Every piece of furniture and artwork has a story and a meaning behind it. Their team took the time to perfect the design and find exactly what they were looking for.

And the winner is... broadwater!

BROADWATER won the Neptune Award for best refit of 2021 at the World Superyacht Awards. We would like to congratulate BROADWATER ‘s owner, Designer Adam Voorhees, Captain Jacob Ewing, Captain Mark Jones and Project Manager Peter Wilson for the acknowledgment of their incredible refit.

World Superyacht Awards 2023 - winners revealed

2023-05-22T12:06:00+01:00

The 18th BOAT International World Superyacht Awards took place in Istanbul on the weekend

Superyacht owners and industry leaders gathered in Istanbul, Turkey on the weekend for the 18th BOAT International World Superyacht Awards, held in association with AKYACHT. Hosted at the Çırağan Palace Kempinski, the ceremony saw 19 Neptune trophies handed out to the standout superyachts from the past year.

The 2023 World Superyacht Awards saw 19 Neptune trophies handed out to the standout superyachts from the past year

The World Superyacht Awards are unique in the industry as they are judged by an independent and exclusive panel of 23 current and former superyacht owners, who collectively bring hundreds of years of experience to the judging process. Led by chairman Richard Raper, the judges made more than 120 individual visits to this year’s nominated yachts.

The 2023 Motor Yacht of the Year accolade went to 74.9m Kenshō , built by Admiral, a brand of The Italian Sea Group. The yacht, which features a diesel-electric propulsion system, was praised for her “owner-driven attributes” and won by a decisive margin.

The Germán Frers-designed 56m Alea was named Sailing Yacht of the Year. Built by Vitters for an owner who wanted to “circumnavigate the world in speed and comfort”, she impressed the judges with her attractive profile, uncluttered decks and sizeable beach club.

Other notable winners of the evening included the 33.7m Van Der Valk Blue Jeans , which won the Neptune in the Semi-Displacement or Planing Motor Yachts, 30m to 34.9m category.

In the Displacement Motor Yachts 500GT to 1,499GT category, Come Together , the first Amels 60 designed by Espen Øino and Winch Design, was triumphant.

British yard Pendennis was awarded a Neptune for the rebuild of 58.8m classic motoryacht Marala , and Huisfit’s transformation of the 63.3m schooner Athos was named the Best Refit. This year’s Voyager’s Award went to V6 , for a North American journey taking in the beauty of Alaska with spectacular photography.

“This year’s World Superyacht Award winners once again represent the pinnacle of this remarkable industry,” said Stewart Campbell, Editor-in-Chief at BOAT International. “The skill, attention to detail and innovation shown by the designers and shipyards, combined with the imagination of the owners, has created some truly exceptional vessels. As the only awards programme in our industry judged by owners, the winners of this year’s Neptune trophies should feel justly proud of their achievements.”

The evening also took time to recognise Rahmi M Koç for his remarkable life in business, philanthropy and boats. A passionate yachtsman, he has owned an impressive portfolio of yachts throughout his lifetime – including his current flagship Nazenin V , a Sparkman & Stephens-designed 52m built at RMK, his own shipyard in Istanbul. Koç’s children took to the stage to receive the Legacy Award on his behalf.

WORLD SUPERYACHT AWARDS: THE INSIDE STORY OF THE YACHTING INDUSTRY'S OSCARS

In the run up to the 2022  World Superyacht Awards  in London,  BOAT  reveals what really goes into winning a World Superyacht Award, long recognised as yachting's most sought after prize.

What if there was a superyacht awards programme where  superyacht owners  themselves judged the latest and greatest projects to hit the water? When the idea was posed more than 17 years ago, it was a novel one.

Yachting awards at the time were mostly judged by the organisations or publications arranging them – and not much has changed since. But BOAT International Media envisioned a peer-reviewed process, by putting the decision-making in the hands of experienced yacht owners. With that guiding philosophy, the World Superyacht Awards were created in 2005.

“We wanted to have a judging system that was completely transparent and judged by the end user of the boat,” says Roger Lean-Vercoe, who helped create the WSAs and was a longtime Chairman of the Judges. “We sought out owners who had built yachts and understood the process.”

The first WSA prize-giving was held in Venice, Italy in 2006, but organising the awards started early in 2005 by writing the rules and recruiting judges, which Lean-Vercoe admits was tough in the beginning. “We didn’t get enough owners, so we topped up the panel with a few unbiased industry professionals, like the owner of Merrill Stevens shipyard,” he says. However, the buzz of the awards soon attracted enthusiastic owners, and after a few years the judging panel was entirely made up of superyacht owners.

Nowadays, an average of 20 owners make up the judging panel each year, and all but a few exceptions are current superyacht owners. The Chairman of the Judges – a position rotated between the judges – heads the Judges’ Meeting, the vital day when the awards scoring takes place. It’s a key part of an entire awards weekend, which has an accompanying social programme. In recent years, the judging has taken place in London, Trieste and Abu Dhabi.

As judges serve a minimum of three years and average a six-year term on the panel, there is a huge amount of experience to tap in to. “If they are an effective judge, they can stay as long as they like,” Lean-Vercoe says. Anyone who signs on as a WSA judge has to be truly passionate about the undertaking. Judges agree to visit at least five of the nominated yachts – and attend the judging weekend.

“We try to get judges onto as many boats as possible so there is always someone at the Judges’ Meeting who has physically experienced the boat we are talking about,” says Lean-Vercoe. While most of the yachts are seen at the major boat shows, such as  Monaco  and Fort Lauderdale, some owners go to great lengths to see nominated yachts. When Lord Laidlaw was a judge, he diverted his private jet to the Maldives just to see a boat.

Getting on board the yachts is not always a straightforward process, according to Paola Trifiró owner of 33 metre  Vitters  sailing yacht  Ribelle , who has been a judge since 2012. But more commonly yacht owners and yards will make sure the judges get the full experience. “One of my favourite memories of visiting a yacht was test sailing  Bill Duker’s  70 metre  Sybaris  (now  Badis ) in Monaco in 2016,” Trifiró recalls. She also lists going on board  Adastra ,  Madame Gu  and  Dilbar  as some of her most memorable judging experiences.

“We all do this with a lot of investment of time, passion and dedication,” says Thomas Haffa, who has been a judge since his former yacht  4H  won a WSA in 2008 and has owned six yachts during his tenure. “I’m often asked how much the awards are influenced by the amount of advertising spend from shipyards with  BOAT International , but the judging process is completely independent. It is a very professional group of objective people.”

Very passionate people, too, according to  Alan Dabbiere , who has been a judge since 2009. “I love boats – I love the engineering, the way they move in the water, the fact they are more than a mode of transportation, but a lifestyle,” he says. “Even though I lived on my past two boats (a 35 metre  Benetti  and 60 metre  CRN Constance ) for long periods, seeing other points of view has broadened my ideas about what makes a great build.”

The desire to see and experience the latest yachts to hit the water is a huge part of the attraction for the judges, allowing them to access yachts that would otherwise be off-limits. “I enjoy judging because the task allows me to enlarge my knowledge of innovations in yachting,” says Trifiró.

As the only awards programme in the yachting industry judged by owners, the WSAs have earned an unmatched level of credibility and gravitas. “Because it’s given by real owners who have been committed to designing and building boats, and who are experienced in judging value and quality of the boats, it increases the value of the Awards,” says designer  Philippe Briand , whose boats have won many of the coveted Neptune trophies over the years.

Briand says that an uptick in business can be traced back directly to the awards – even beyond the superyacht industry. After receiving an award for 73 metre  Grace E  (now  Nautilus ) , Briand was hired for a building project in Hong Kong.

“Winning gives exposure and brand awareness,” says Farouk Nefzi, chief marketing officer of  Feadship . “The WSAs can absolutely raise awareness to the greater audience outside of our industry as well.”

Dutch yard  Heesen , one of the most successful yards in WSA history, says that winning a WSA is certainly something clients pay attention to. “Brokers have asked us for the list of most recent Awards won by our boats because it was requested by a client,” says Sara Gianola, PR and press office manager at Heesen. “It definitely has value.”

From the beginning, says Lean-Vercoe, the WSA ceremony hit the mark as a high-end event where yards were happy to take their clients. Over the years, the ceremonies have been held in Venice, London, Istanbul, Amsterdam and Florence.

“The aim was always to have the prize-giving not in a hotel ballroom, but to find a venue where having a dinner there was a privilege in itself,” says Lean-Vercoe. “Florence was the epitome of that – to have a cocktail in the Uffizi Gallery and a dinner in the Medici Hall is significant and different. And, of course, the awards itself is not just the prize giving – it’s always an entire weekend of exciting things to do.” The venues have grown along with the awards ceremony. The edition in Venice, attended by around 400 guests, was quickly outgrown; more than 600 guests attended the 2018 edition in Florence.

Trifiró fondly remembers when the awards was held in Istanbul, and also enjoyed Florence, “where guests enjoyed conversing in front of Botticelli's  Primavera , and tasted the magnificent dinner in the splendid frame of the Salone dei Cinquecento”.

In 2020, things were a little different. With COVID-19 causing disruption to global travel and events, the World Superyacht Awards were hosted virtually for the first time. Key winners of the evening included the 77.3 metre Feadship superyacht  Pi , which won two awards, including the coveted Motor Yacht of the Year award. Elsewhere, the Baltic sailing yacht  Canova  was named Sailing Yacht of the Year while  Hodor  triumphed in the support vessel category. The virtual ceremony included video messages from Prince Albert II of Monaco and  Sir Ben Ainslie , who updated viewers on the progress of the UK’s America’s Cup team INEOS Team UK.

By 2021, a sense of normality had returned as did an in-person award ceremony. The most recent edition of the World Superyacht Awards was held in Europe's yachting capital of Monaco with 80 metre  Artefact  taking home the award for Motor Yacht of the Year and 33.9 metre  Geist  winning Sailing Yacht of the Year.

Nefzi calls the WSAs the “best organised award ceremony in this industry – there’s a good balance between entertainment, social and programming”.

Since its inception, the WSA has only been tweaked slightly, says Lean-Vercoe. Gone are the days of judges receiving photocopied dossiers and CD-ROMS as now everything can go onto a 8GB memory stick. The biggest change, instead, has been to the yachts themselves. “The WSA haven’t changed much, but every year we visit more innovative boats,” says Trifiró.

Haffa agrees, and says that “as the industry has developed and yachts have gotten bigger, it has made them more complex to judge”. This has only motivated the judges, who have been known to engage in passionate debate during the Judges’ Meeting. During the day-long meeting, the judges examine every nominated boat before submitting their score via a secret ballot. “This is a group that has strong opinions about what makes a great boat,” says Dabbiere. “It creates a really lively discussion.”

Though scoring takes place during the judging weekend, the results are obviously sealed until the big black-tie Gala Evening. This anticipation makes it an exciting night for all involved. “It’s a super exciting moment where you feel the knot in your stomach and the chills on your back – then there’s a moment when they announce the winner when everyone holds their breath in the room,” says Heesen’s Gianola.

But perhaps it’s Briand who best sums up what it means to win a World Superyacht Award: “It is like being inducted into the yachting hall of fame.”

The 18th edition of the World Superyacht Awards kicked off with cocktails in Turkey ’s vibrant capital, Istanbul over the weekend, and saw an impressive selection of charter yachts win a coveted Neptune trophy during the exclusive prize-giving ceremony.

The annual black-tie gala dinner event celebrates the world’s finest superyachts of the year, recognising and rewarding ingenuity and craftsmanship in the design, engineering and construction of the luxury yachts.

Using a secret ballot system by an independent judging panel made up of experienced superyacht owners, the World Superyacht Awards are the only peer-reviewed yachting awards in the world.

Hosted at the elegant Mandarin Oriental along the glittering shoreline of the Bosphorus, the elite of the superyacht world, owners and industry leaders gathered to celebrate this year’s event where 15 Neptunes were up for grabs, including the coveted Motor Yacht of the Year and Sailing Yacht of the Year awards.

In an event that saw 49 nominees fight it out across 15 categories, charter yachts were awarded trophies in 7 of the categories. Here are the charter yachts that picked up a trophy at this year’s World Superyacht Awards;

Winner: Motor Yacht of the Year

Charter yacht KENSHO

Scooping the top award of the evening, the striking 75m (247ft) Admiral superyacht KENSHÕ was declared the winner by a comfortable margin, having wowed the judges with her owner-driven attributes, charter-focused amenities, high ceilings and Zen-calm interiors. She has also been lauded for her innovative engineering, harvesting power from five variable-speed generators using a diesel-electric propulsion system.

Winner: Best rebuilt Yacht

Charter yacht MARALA

Following an extensive refit over two and a half years at the Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, UK , the 59m (193ft) classic yacht MARALA – originally built by Camper & Nicholsons in 1931 – has been lovingly restored to her former glory. Judges were impressed by the meticulous work undertaken to preserve her period features while paying homage to her fascinating storied history, such as her time in military service. Her interiors have also been given the full treatment, with a distinct nod to the avant-garde design influences of the era that can be seen throughout her interior spaces and accommodation.

Winner: Best Refitted Yacht

Charter sailing yacht ATHOS

Catching the judges’ eye, they felt the arresting 63-meter schooner yacht ATHOS merited this coveted accolade chiefly for the exceptionally high-quality work undertaken by Royal Huisman ’s refit yard in Amsterdam. Under the supervision of her original architect, Andre Hoek, ATHOS was given new booms, sails and lightweight carbon-fiber rigging, as well as an extended stern to accommodate a larger cockpit adjoining the new owner's cabin, and newly repositioned navigation station.

Winner: Sailing Yachts, 30m to 49.9m

Charter sailing yacht SORVIND

Built in Cape Town by Southern Wind Shipyard in 2022, the 35m (114ft) sailing yacht SØRVIND has already enjoyed a slew of nominations for her interior design, naval architecture and outstanding exteriors, so it might not come as a huge surprise that she scooped the Sailing Yacht gong in her category after impressing judges by her high-performance capabilities, charter-focused amenities, Scandi-cool interiors and highly practical accommodation layout.

Winner: Displacement Motor Yachts 499 GT and Below, 30m to 39.9m

Charter yacht UNKNOWN

Benetti 's Oasis 34M yacht UNKNOWN is certainly no unsung wallflower, garnering a raft of accolades since her arrival onto the scene in 2022 that lauded her strong connection with water and nature through her extensive glazing, harmonious indoor/outdoor areas and the Italian yard's award-winning Oasis Deck®. This is precisely what inspired the judges, who admired the yacht’s open aft beach club spanning across two decks, culminating in the infinity pool that straddles two levels, and additional sense of space created by her fold-down bulwarks – deployed for guests to enjoy while at anchor. They were also impressed by the number of alfresco relaxation and entertainment areas peppered across her deck spaces, which they considered truly remarkable for her size category and worthy of a Neptune.

Judges’ Commendation: Displacement Motor Yachts 499 GT and Below, 40m to 44.9m

Charter yacht ACE

Deemed by the judges as “an enviable all-rounder”, the 44m (145ft) yacht ACE has certainly proved a standout contender since her launch earlier this year. Built by the up-and-coming Conrad Shipyard in Poland, the judges admired the yacht for her striking good looks, convivial crew areas and technical engineering features. Already a finalist in her category at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2023, superyacht ACE also wowed the WSA judges with her generous proportions, reimagined deck spaces and elegant interiors.

Come together.

Charter yacht COME TOGETHER

It was inevitable that the successful pairing of the esteemed Espen Øino and Damen Yachting would end up scooping an award for their geometrically striking yachts that turn heads wherever they cruise, with the Amels 60 Limited Edition yacht COME TOGETHER proving no exception. Renowned for their next-generation design culture, Damen have been instrumental in creating yachts that not only deliver on space and luxurious comfort but also harnessing a raft of sustainable features, which ultimately won over the judges. Notable features include the seamless blend between Winch Design’s masculine interior scheme with Espen Øino’s angular and geometric exterior styling, the yacht’s innovative sundeck layout and hybrid-propulsion technology.

Judges’ Special Awards

Coral ocean.

Charter yacht Coral Ocean

Narrowly missing out on the Best Refit Award, the judges had been so impressed by her transformative upgrade that they felt the vast 73m (238ft) superyacht CORAL OCEAN deserved one of their special awards. Suitably impressed by her charter-rich amenities, the Lürssen yacht now features an entirely rebuilt sundeck, with sumptuous loungers and a glass-bottomed spa pool adjoining a central deckhouse housing an informal dining area, bar and TV lounge, with an integrated state-of-the-art sound system creating the perfect day to night party hub. Originally designed by the award-winning London-based studio Bannenberg and Rowell, the superyacht's styling now offers a neutral scheme with subtle color accents and Art Deco-inspired geometric motifs throughout.

ISA Yachts' custom 80m superyacht seen for the first time

ISA Yachts , a brand of Palumbo Superyachts , has revealed the first in-build images of a custom 80-metre superyacht. The unnamed project is currently undergoing interior outfitting, with delivery scheduled for 2026.

The largest yacht built by ISA Yachts to date, it marks the first collaboration between the Italian shipyard and Espen Øino , who is responsible for the yacht's exterior design.

Giuseppe Palumbo, director of Palumbo Superyachts, has described the superyacht as an "avant-garde" project that "consolidates [the] company’s presence in the international superyacht panorama".

The yacht’s naval engineering is a joint effort between Palumbo Superyachts and Italian studio Hydro Tec .

"We are delighted to be working with ISA on this exciting project. [The] owners are experienced and have a keen eye for aesthetics and a background in naval architecture," said Espen Øino.

The client was introduced by Nicholas Hidiroglou of Parsifal Yachting and joins 12 other yachts under construction at Palumbo, ranging from 24 to 80 metres.

This project is under construction alongside an 80-metre Gran Turismo, designed inside and out by Enrico Gobbi and due for delivery in 2027.

The Italian shipyard recently shared the ISA Unica 40 with BOAT International . The new 40-metre model is characterised by elongated exterior decks and an oversized bow that features a sunbathing area and an "entertainment space".

Young brother and sister dead, several hurt when vehicle crashes into Michigan birthday party

Surveillance video from a Michigan home near where a suspected drunken driver slammed into a child’s weekend birthday party shows just how fast the driver was going before the crash happened. It also picks up the screaming and confusion afterward.

BERLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A young brother and sister died and several people were injured, some of them seriously, when a vehicle driven by a suspected drunken driver crashed into a young child’s birthday party Saturday at a boat club, a Michigan sheriff said.

An 8-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother died at the scene in the crash, when a 66-year-old woman drove 25 feet (7.6 meters) into the building about 3 p.m. at the Swan Creek Boat Club in Berlin Township, about 30 miles (48.2 kilometers) south of Detroit, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said.

“The scene was described by the first responders as extremely chaotic, with high level of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” he said.

Three children and six adults were taken to area hospitals by two helicopters or ambulances with life-threatening injuries, he said. Others injured were given first aid at the scene and some were taken to hospitals by private vehicles.

Goodnough did not identify the woman driving the vehicle but said she was taken into custody and held at the Monroe County Jail suspected of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death. She was cooperating with authorities and likely would face more charges as the investigation continues, he said.

Authorities were notified the woman may have been at a nearby tavern before the incident, Goodnough said, adding they closed the establishment and planned to execute a search warrant there as part of the investigation.

BARCELONA, Spain, (April 23, 2024) – In a spectacular celebration today at the Port of Barcelona, award-winning actress and performer Hannah Waddingham officially welcomed the newest and most innovative Princess Cruises ship – Sun Princess – serving as godmother during a star-studded naming ceremony.

The time-honored maritime tradition took place onboard Sun Princess in the all-new Princess Arena and Waddingham, alongside the ship’s Captain Craig Street, joyously pronounced, “I name this ship Sun Princess. May God bless her and all who sail on her.” She then released the celebratory bottle of Champagne to smash against the ship wishing good fortune to all of the ship’s guests and crew sailing to incredible destinations all over the world.

“Hannah is globally admired and adored for her immense talent and determination. Those qualities coupled with her family’s deep connection and love for the sea make her the perfect godmother for our sensational new Sun Princess,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president. “We are honored that she has joined us for this pinnacle moment, and that she will remain a treasured part of the ship’s legacy forever.”

Known for her adored role as Rebecca Welton in “Ted Lasso,” Waddingham said being named Sun Princess godmother is a “pinch me” moment as she joins an esteemed group of women, including members of the Royal Family, who have also served as godmothers to Princess ships: Diana, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess, 1984); Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess 2013); Audrey Hepburn (Star Princess, 1989); Sophia Loren (Crown Princess, 1990); Martha Stewart (Crown Princess, 2006); among many notable celebrities and dignitaries.

Waddingham grew up boating and has fond memories of weekends in Dunkirk. In addition, her grandfather served in the Royal Navy during World War II.

“As much as theatre has always rippled through my bloodstream so too has a strong, historic familial connection with the Royal Navy and all things nautical,” said Waddingham. “I have of course seen over the years the iconic godmothers who have been asked to represent these magnificent ships and looked on in awe. It is therefore such a great privilege to have been asked to act as Godmother to the Sun Princess, first of her class. I can’t quite believe it.”

Actor and magician Michael Carbonaro served as master of ceremonies for the event, and joined by a host of celebrities and TV personalities including Tyra Banks, Romero Britto, Randy Fenoli, Jeff Corwin, Rob Floyd, along with celebrated chefs Dario Cecchini, Makoto Okuwa, and beloved original “Love Boat” cast members Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing), Ted Lange (Isaac) and Bernie Kopell (Doc).

In addition, Natasha Bedingfield was on hand to fittingly perform her smash hit “Pocket Full of Sunshine,” along with other award-winning hits including “Unwritten.”

What’s New, What’s Next Princess to Add Ship-within-a-Ship Concept to Sun Princess, Star Princess  Sanctuary Collection Debuts in September Prior to the Sun Princess naming ceremony, Princess President John Padgett shared a few details on what’s ahead for the world’s most iconic cruise brand. Guests reserving in the Sanctuary Collection will enjoy exclusive access to the ship’s top-deck retreat area, along with many additional bespoke events and high-end amenities designed to enhance their voyage.

Star Princess to Sail Alaska Voyages in Summer 2026 Also announced, the next Sphere-Class ship, Star Princess, will sail her first full summer in 2026 in Alaska, making it the first of its class to ever sail to the Great Land. Star Princess is currently under construction and scheduled to debut in the Mediterranean in September 2025.

Princess Collaborates with Celebrities to Launch Love Line Premium Liquors Princess also revealed its newest indulgence - the "Love Line Premium Liquors" collection. Crafted in collaboration with renowned celebrities Pitbull, Jason Aldean and Romero Britto, this exclusive line of wines and spirits promises an unparalleled experience for guests sailing aboard ships from the Love Boat. The new premium collection features meticulously selected wines and spirits, each bearing the unique touch of its celebrity partner including Voli Vodka by Pitbull, Love Prosecco by Britto, and Melorosa Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon from Jason Aldean. The Love Line collection is currently available aboard Sun Princess, and will roll out to all the ships in the Princess fleets throughout the summer.

Love by Britto Officially Debuts Aboard Sun Princess During the day’s festivities, Love by Britto, an artistic-inspired dining experience from world-renowned artist Romero Britto, made its debut. Known for his bold, colorful, and joyful style, and a global advocate for happiness, Britto has created a dining concept that serves as an exquisite showcase of the artist’s iconic and joyful designs against the backdrop of a boutique restaurant designed to immerse couples in a world of vivid colors, bold patterns, and heartfelt emotions. Unlike anything else in cruising, the venue also highlights the talents of Princess Cruises’ Head of Culinary Arts Rudi Sodamin who has created an array of tantalizing choices that embody profound passion, exquisite flavor, and boundless creativity with a seven-course, prix fixe menu ($149 per person) that begins with a flute of Champagne upon arrival and features luxury ingredients including lobster, caviar and truffles, and dessert options that always include chocolate fondue.

More About Sun Princess Godmother Hannah Waddingham British actress and singer, Waddingham is beloved for her role as Rebecca Welton in Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso,” in which her performance garnered a Primetime Emmy, Critics Choice Television Award and Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as two individual Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations. She will next be seen in the highly anticipated Universal film “The Fall Guy” opposite Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in theaters on May 3, 2024. Earlier this year, Waddingham earned a BAFTA TV Award nomination for her own Apple TV+ holiday special “Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas.” Waddingham made her worldwide hosting debut in April 2023 at The Olivier Awards (she returned as host for the 2024 ceremony) followed swiftly by the BBC Eurovision Song Contest 2023, for which she has gained her second BAFTA TV nomination and won The Royal Television Society award for “Best Entertainment Performance” in 2024. Her upcoming films include Sony Animation film “Garfield” out May 24, 2024 and in 2025 “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.”
