Flamenca 25

Flamenca 25 is a 24 ′ 7 ″ / 7.5 m monohull sailboat designed by Oswald Berkemeyer and built by Nebe Boatworks starting in 1976.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Oswald Berkemeyer was also the designer of the later, and better known MIURA, also from this South African builder. A photo has been promised.

Where to Dock Your Boat: Panama’s Best Marinas

flamenco yacht

Before settling in David in western Panama in 2009, I lived aboard my sailboat, Carina, for 16 years. My husband and I sailed the western Caribbean and we still have many friends among the cruising community. Although Panama has miles of coastline, it has few marine facilities for small boats. If you’re looking for a safe harbor to dock your boat in Panama, here are the stand-out marinas to visit.

Bocas del Toro, Caribbean Coast, Northwestern Panama

Bocas marina.

Bocas Marina combines an awesome tropical setting with ease of access and reputable service into a complete package.

Conveniently located across from Bocas Town, Bocas Marina has room at its floating docks for up to 100 boats, with a maximum length of 120 feet. This popular cruiser’s destination combines an awesome tropical setting with ease of access and reputable service into a complete package. Each slip has metered electric service and free water, and boaters have use of a bath house. The dockside restaurant and bar host occasional special events (I’ve heard the Halloween party is a hoot!). Laundry and Internet services are also available.

Bocas Marina offers on-site boat repairs and basic maintenance and has a diesel fuel dock. More specialized yacht services can be arranged through the marina with local craftsmen. For haul-outs they refer boaters to a recently-built boatyard at Almirante, on the mainland, called Bocas Yacht Services . For those interested in buying or selling a boat they also have a brokerage with sail and power boat listings.

The advantage of docking at Bocas Marina is its proximity to town, so provisioning is a bit easier and you can enjoy the Bocas Town nightlife. Check here for more details.

Red Frog Marina

The Red Frog Marina has over 70 slips on floating docks that can accommodate boats of all sizes.

Located on Isla Bastimentos, Red Frog Marina is part of the larger Red Frog Beach Island Resort and Spa. This is a multi-use property with private residential villas, two restaurants, a full-service spa, a hostel and a range of leisure activities on site. One of its nicest features is a picture-perfect crescent of white-sand beach that you don’t want to miss. It is reachable only by water and the marina provides regular water taxi service to Bocas Town for its guests.

The marina has over 70 slips on floating docks that can accommodate boats of all sizes. Approach to the marina is along the south shore of Isla Bastimentos with depths of 16 to 30 feet. In addition to short-term slip rentals, they offer a number of slips for purchase. Electricity and water are metered at each slip, and boaters are welcome to use the bath house and laundry room. While they don’t have a boatyard or haul-out facilities, they do offer a wide range of repair work, installation and trouble-shooting of all the main boat systems.

Red Frog Marina is a good choice for nature-lovers and those who prefer the peace and quiet of being away from town.

Colon, Caribbean Coast, North Central Panama

Shelter bay marina.

Surrounded by lush jungle and tropical flora and fauna, Shelter Bay Marina's location is gorgeous.

At the northern entrance to the Panama Canal you’ll find the Shelter Bay Marina complex. This full service marina and boat yard has it all. The property is located at Fort Sherman, a former U.S. military installation now in disuse. It is on the western side of the Gatun Locks and several miles outside of the city of Colon, so by road it’s a bit out of the way. The marina does offer shuttle van service into Colon for shopping and other needs, and taxis can be arranged as well.

The marina location is gorgeous, surrounded by lush jungle and tropical flora and fauna. It is very well protected, being inside the canal breakwater and completely enclosed, so forget about wind, waves and wakes! This large marina has over 200 boat slips and can accommodate all sizes. They have all the dockside services we have come to expect. Shore-side the amenities are extensive, including a hotel, restaurant, chandlery, swimming pool, exercise room, and a well-stocked store that offers a variety of personalized services.

Adjacent to the marina is the boatyard with complete haul-out facilities, fuel delivery, work area, and boat care available. Shelter Bay Marina is the only full service facility at the north end of the canal. If you plan to transit the canal this is an excellent place to prepare for and await your trip. If you don’t plan a canal transit, it’s a great place for a stopover or to complete your boat projects.

You’ll find details about Shelter Bay and all their rates here.

Panama City, Pacific Coast, Central Panama

Flamenco yacht club and marina.

The Flamenco Yacht Club and Marina is the perfect place to dock and explore Panama City.

Whether you are doing serious provisioning, completing a canal transit, or just want to hang out near the big city lights, Flamenco Yacht Club and Marina is the place to dock in Panama City . In fact, it’s the only full service marina in the city that caters to small boats.

Flamenco Marina is positioned at the end of the Amador Causeway, snug between Isla Perico and Isla Flamenco, with a clear approach and two long breakwaters. They have 191 slips, all with water and electric service, for boats up to 250 feet. Amenities include a restaurant and bar, showers, laundry, Internet, store and game room, as well as a fuel dock with gasoline and diesel. Alongside the docks you’ll find a large haul-out and storage yard with a travel lift, where they offer a range of maintenance and repair services.

The slip rates at Flamenco Marina are higher than other locations, probably due to the lack of competition. Still it’s an awesome location and perfect for exploring Panama City. You can find more details here .

Flamenco Beach

Flamenco Beach is one of the most popular beaches of Puerto Rico, located in the Caribbean Island of Culebra. Its sacred beauty, uninhabited landscape, pristine blue waters and bright white sand make this beach a highly sought out location for visitors. It is such a beautiful place that words and photos cannot capture its vibrant beauty. The amazing Caribbean sun, beautiful year-around weather, still waves and the transparent water make for ideal locale for swimming, snorkeling, diving and other water activities. You can fly from any part of the world to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Carolina, which is the closest airport to Flamenco.

Things to do in Flamenco Beach

  • Romantic Strolls: Flamenco's soft white sand and cool breezes from the sea will add romance to your long walks on the beach. The beach gets crowded during the holidays and summer months, while the winter season is less crowded and much more peaceful. The beach is 1.6km long, so you won't have any difficulty finding your own quiet spot in summers.
  • Diving and Snorkeling: Explore the coral reefs below the shallow waters. You may get to spot sea turtles, manta rays and tropic fish species like blue tang, wrasse, parrotfish, ghost crab, lobsters, stingrays and more.
  • Swimming: This beach is perfect for families. The shallow waters are ideal children to splash around in. There is a natural “toddler pool” at the right end of Flamenco. The waters are calm and the waves are gentle, so you and your family can have a great day here.
  • Military Tanks: There are two rusting M4 Sherman tanks on the beach. These tanks were left here by the US Navy in 1975.
  • Hiking: The horseshoe-shaped beach offers a great walking trail path. The surrounding area is rocky, providing hiking and tons of photography opportunities. The beach is bordered by the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge. If you’re lucky, a small hike to the end of the beach may help you see hawksbill or leatherback sea turtles.

Accommodation in Flamenco Beach

There are designated campgrounds just a few feet away from the water. The beach has all the amenities like showers, bathrooms, lifeguards, water tanks, etc. It is common that tourists spend months in these camps because of its accessibility. There are kiosks that sell food, beverages and beach accessories.

Nearby Beaches

  • Take a 10-15 min hike from the parking lot of Flamenco Beach to reach Carlos Rosario Beach. This beach is ideal for sunbathing and snorkeling.
  • Tamarindo Beach is rocky and is far less visited than its neighbouring beaches.
  • Take your kayak and reach Dakity and Soldier's Point during the sunset for some picturesque moments.
  • Brava Beach is not for the faint hearted as many tourists do not visit this beach. Surfing is rough here and swimming is not advisable because of the tough under current.
  • Hop onboard your private yacht to reach Resaca beach. It is similar to Brava Beach, so don't try swimming or snorkeling here but it does offer some stunning sites.
  • If you want to see multi-colored waters and varied marine creatures, then visit West beach.
  • Playa Tortuga is a stunning horseshoe-shaped bay that features an abandoned lighthouse, shallow pools and promontory.
  • Luis Peña Channel Natural Reserve is formed by Melones Beach and Carlos Rosario Beach. This reserve is filled with unique sea life and marine creatures of all types.

Hotels Near Flamenco Beach

From 3km to 40 km away, these hotels are located close to Flamenco Beach: Club Seabourne, Malecon House, El Blok Hotel, Hix Island House, Hacienda Tamarindo, Fajardo Inn, El Conquistador Resort, Casa Cielo Vista and Luquillo Sunrise Beach Inn just to name a few.

And as someone who’s been to other beaches in the top 10, like Palm Beach in Aruba and Grace Bay Beach in Turks and Caicos , I can tell you it deserves all the accolades it’s received!

Wait, it actually might deserve the top spot on any best beaches list!

2. There’s truly something magical about it

The island of Culebra is largely undeveloped, which lets it’s natural beauty shine. Unlike other popular Caribbean destinations with hotel-lined beaches and restaurants with great views, Flamenco Beach offers none of that. Instead, you’ll get to enjoy the island in it’s gorgeous natural state.

3. Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico isn’t crowded

Even more spectacular? It’s remote location makes it harder to get to, and the beach is not over crowded. The crescent-shaped beach is large with enough room to spread out and sit away from the crowd.

Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico is most busy over the summer months and during the peak of winter. However, just walk left or right of the main entrance and you’ll be able to find solitude. It’s sort of like the beaches in Vieques or Culebra – so perfect!

Alright, enough about why you should visit. Let’s chat about how to get there…

Where is Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico?

Just 18 miles to the east of the mainland Puerto Rico is the tiny island of Culebra, Puerto Rico. It’s only 10 square miles, and the perfect island escape. Playa Flamenco is on the northwest part of the island.

Here’s a map of Flamenco Beach in Culebra , as well as the location of the port for the ferry, the airport and a couple of mainland spots. This will give you a sense of the island. Zoom in as needed to check out Culebra Island and Flamenco Beach on the map!

While Flamenco Beach is the main attraction in Culebra, there’s actually quite a bit to see and do on this tiny island. Check out this Ultimate Guide to Culebra Puerto Rico for more!

How to get to Flamenco Beach, Culebra

To get to the stunning Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico, you have 3 options…

1. Day trip to Flamenco Beach

catamaran and yacht in teal water

This is ideal if you’re only spending a few days in Puerto Rico and you want to maximize your time. There’s a few options departing from mainland Puerto Rico that visit Flamenco Beach for the day.

Best day trips to Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico

  • Departing from San Juan, take a speedboat to Culebra and Flamenco Beach .
  • If you’re in the Ceiba area, join a snorkeling tour to Flamenco Beach .
  • From Ceiba, this tour includes kayaking and snorkeling in Culebra plus time on Flamenco Beach .

These Flamenco Beach tours have your whole day planned out for you, minimizing your stress on your vacation! From food to snorkeling gear plus local expertise, this is a great way to experience Flamenco Beach in Culebra!

If booking a tour, just remember to pack your ocean-safe sunscreen and beach towel . This is going to be amazing!

2. Ferry to Flamenco Beach (Culebra) from Ceiba

ferry to flamenco beach culebra docked at port on a cloudy day

If you’re staying on Culebra longer than a day – and I highly recommend it – you can take the ferry over to the island, then rent a jeep or golf cart to get to Flamenco Beach. (For more info on logistics, read this post .)

While extremely affordable at less than $5 per person, I personally found the ferry to Flamenco Beach to be risky. Advance reservations are difficult because the ferry prioritizes spots for locals first (which honestly they should do). But that means you could show up the day you’re planning to go to Flamenco Beach and find out you actually can’t get a seat on the ferry.

Additionally, the Puerto Rico Ferry doesn’t release tickets very far in advance – it’s only a month at a time. So for instance, June’s tickets for the Flamenco Beach ferry would be available for purchase very late May, until they’re sold out.

So because of that, I’d recommend the next option if you have more than a day to spend here.

3. Fly to Flamenco Beach in Culebra

Puerto Rico from the air flying to flamenco beach, culebra

While more expensive than taking a ferry, flying to Culebra Island/Flamenco Beach is quick and reliable. You can fly there via Cape Air or Air Flamenco . Flights depart from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan directly to Benjamin Rivera Noriega Airport, Culebra’s small airport.

Once you arrive on the island, you’ll need to rent a golf cart or Jeep through Carlos Jeep Rental or Jerry’s Jeep Rental . With less than 2000 residents, there’s no ride share option!

Pro tip: during peak season, be sure to reserve your rental car in advance because there’s a limited supply.

small cape air airplane flights to flamenco beach PR

Driving to Flamenco Beach

Once you’re on the island, GPS can be unreliable. To get to the main entrance to Flamenco Beach, pick up a map at your Jeep rental spot. It’s a helpful visual. 😊

You’ll want to take highway 251 on Culebra and stay on the paved road drive it all the way to the end of the island. GPS will tell you to turn right before the lake, but that’s not where you want to go. Drive past the lake – Laguna del Flamenco (on the right side of the road) and continue on until you see the entrance to Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico.

Note:   it does cost $5 per vehicle and $2 per person, per day to enjoy the amenities at Flamenco Beach Culebra. Pay at the main entrance and they’ll guide you where to park.

The stunning Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico

beautiful caribbean water and hillside backdrop with white waves at Flamenco beach Puerto rico

Alright already let’s see the beach!

Flamenco Beach in Culebra is the kind of place that you truly cannot believe until you see it.

As someone who’s actively crossing places off my bucket list, I’ve only felt this way about 3 other spots in this world: the gorgeous Leeward Beach in Turks and Caicos , the majestic mountains of Glacier National Park in Montana, USA and while hiking the NaPali Coast in Kauai, Hawaii .

Anyways, you’re gonna love it!

Best spots to sit on Playa Flamenco

flamenco beach rent umbrellas multicolored on beach with people sitting underneath

Once you walk through the designated path and onto the beach, you can turn left towards the end of the island, or right up the crescent-shaped beach. I personally feel it’s more peaceful to enjoy the beach further from the crowds, so that’s what I typically do. But being close to the amenities has it’s advantages, too!

I’d recommend walking in either direction up the beach if you plan to get in the water. The waves are the biggest and most powerful right in the middle when they come in directly from the Caribbean Sea.

Far end on the west side has more palm trees and spots to cozy up under. If you don’t want to pay for an umbrella, grab a palm tree! You might want to get there early to snag one though, especially in peak summer travel or the dead of winter when the beach is busiest.

If you’re feeling adventurous, bring a hammock and hang it between palms for the afternoon. This is the travel hammock I have and it’s perfect for this kind of beachy getaway!

But basically, sitting anywhere on Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico is like eye candy for you. You’ll love this beach!

Painted Tanks at Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico

tank in caribbean water at flamenco beach

All the way to the west end of Flamenco Beach is an interesting sight: a tank left over from when the U.S. Navy used the island for target practice.

It’s a sad time in the islands history. You can read more about it here . There’s another tank just off the beach you can see on land, too.

Unfortunately, the tank was left sitting on the beach to rot. As you walk on the sand towards the tank, you’ll begin to see black sediment on the sand from the disintegrating tanks. It’s really sad.

But the locals have done something to turn that dark period into some thing beautiful. The tanks are regularly painted to make them more visually appealing, giving them their name.

It’s now a feature on at Puerto Rico Flamenco Beach, and one that makes for an interesting walk. Kids especially love to look at the old tanks!

Flamenco Beach snorkeling

turquoise Caribbean ocean with calm water looking towards the horizon

Real talk: snorkeling Flamenco Beach is great for seeing sting rays and the occasional sea turtle . But you won’t see a lot under the water because there’s not really a good reef system close to the shore.

As someone who’s snorkeled the best reefs in Belize like Laughing Bird Caye and the best snorkeling beaches in Kauai , this just doesn’t compare to that.

But honestly, it shouldn’t! Part of the allure of this beach is the fine white sand and perfect turquoise water . If there was a large reef for snorkeling you wouldn’t have those other aspects that make it perfect!

turquoise ocean with sandy shore and boat on a sunny day

So if you’re looking for the best snorkeling on Culebra, I’d highly recommend heading to Tamarindo Beach or Melones Beach. There is much better snorkeling for sea turtles, sting rays and a variety of fish.

Note: if you do want to snorkel to see the amazing white sand under the water, you can rent snorkel gear from one of the vendors (details below). You can also bring your own snorkel gear .

My husband and I travel with snorkel gear so we have the ultimate flexibility to snorkel when and where we want, for free. This is the snorkel set I took to Culebra and love it.

Amenities at Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico

rentals at flamenco beach photo of truck, palm tree umbrellas

One of the nicest amenities on Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico is the fact that you can rent chairs and an umbrella for the day. It’s not super cheap at $10 per chair and $20 for the umbrella (prices accurate based on article publish date). Snorkeling equipment is available to rent from the on-site vendors, too.

Renting an umbrella will help you from getting sunburnt while putting you close enough to the water to watch the waves crash.

You’ll also find restrooms, rinse stations and even restaurants at Flamenco Beach. So you can sit your happy self on the beach all day and not have to go into town!

Food and drinks

what to eat at flamenco beach pic of little food trailer with menu and coca cola sign

This amazing beach offers a whole lot more for amenities than the beautiful, although more remote, Black Sand Beach Vieques Puerto Rico .

When you’re hungry after spending time on Playa Flamenco, grab a burger or kabobs. For more traditional Puerto Rican food, have some rice and beans or try the empanadas, stuffed with all kids of goodies like chicken, crab, shrimp or octopus.

Need water? They’ve got that too!

Cocktails and beer are also available. Or, pack a cooler and bring your own!

Unlike other cushy Caribbean destinations, here’s not service directly on the beach (so nobody will bring you drinks). Again, I think that’s part of the allure of Flamenco Beach Culebra! But the food stands are between the parking lot and beach, so they’re close.

Note: there is construction happening at the time of this article’s publication, which will expand the services at Flamenco Beach in the future.

Puerto Rico Flamenco Beach with kids

Caribbean Sea light turquoise water with pink sandy bottom and green hills in background

If you’re visiting Flamenco Beach with kids, here are a few suggestions for you…

  • If you walk towards the hillside on the far end of the crescent (towards the east), the water is really shallow and the ideal spot for kids to play.
  • The waves are most gentle on the ends of the crescent. The waves can be really strong in the middle of the beach, where there’s direct access from the open Caribbean Sea.
  • There’s not sand toys available at Flamenco Beach. I recommend bringing your own sand toys , like this set.

What to bring to Flamenco Beach

sun bum and comb with beach in background what to pack for flamenco beach

This beach is gorgeous and I hope you enjoy your time here! These are the things you might want to bring to Flamenco Beach.

  • GoPro for the best photos and videos . By taking a GoPro you’ll get super crisp video and photos in and out of the water. And bonus – the lens doesn’t fog or get spotty like other cameras. It can seamlessly go underwater for beautiful shots, like in the video at the beginning of this article. Just be sure to grab a float strap , too!
  • Snorkel gear . Mentioned earlier in this post, bringing your own snorkeling gear means you can snorkel when and where you want to!
  • Detangler for long hair . If you’re swimming or snorkeling and get your hair wet, this stuff is a life saver! Grab a wide-tooth comb and spray it for

woman swimming in the Caribbean Sea wearing a sun hat

  • Reef-safe sunblock . This is a must! The sun is hoooot in the Caribbean and you’ll want to slather the sunblock. Make sure it’s reef safe so it doesn’t hurt the fish and reefs in the ocean. This is my favorite reef-safe sunblock . And bonus – it actually smells great
  • Cash and credit card. I’d highly recommend cash for Playa Flamenco entrance fee and tips, and credit or debit card for food.
  • Bug spray . Guyyyyyys. I cannot stress this enough. The mosquitos are thick in Puerto Rico. So while you’re on the island and not directly in the water, make sure to apply bug spray. This is my favorite all-natural bug spray and it works great!
  • Beach Towel with hidden pocket . If you’re weary of sticky fingers, bring a beach towel with hidden pocket . I put my phone and keys in it and it’s pretty much non-existent for someone looking to grab my stuff.
  • Snacks or food. If you have food allergies or just like to snack, consider bringing your own to the island. If you pack a lunch, there are picnic tables available along the trees to sit and eat.

To view a full list of things to bring to Flamenco Beach, check out this beach packing list .

Where to stay near Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico

view of caribbean from hilltop

Alright before I wrap up this post on one of the most gorgeous spots on the planet, let’s talk accommodations.

Because of the natural state of the beach and Culebra in general, you won’t find Flamenco Beach resorts right on the water. It’s what keeps the beach so beautiful!

There are no high-rise hotels or large chains on Culebra Island. But you will find locally-owned vacation rentals and villas.

I recommend using Booking.com to find the right spot because they have a variety of properties at affordable prices. I used them and found the cutest villa, perfect for 2, Aleli Cottages .

There is one tiny resort right on the beach with just a few rooms, Villa Flamenco Beach . Otherwise the entire island is only a 20 minute drive from one end to the next, so anywhere you stay will be close to Flamenco Beach . 😊

Flamenco Beach hotels & vacation properties

  • Aleli Cottages . Pictured above – it has spectacular views of the island. Perfect for couples, it’s affordable and is a great little vacation property.
  • Ulala Culebra . With water views, these rental units are just a short drive from the beach and town.
  • Island Charm Culebra. With picturesque balcony views, you’ll love these accommodations.

If you’re planning to stay a night (or more) on Culebra, you’ll want to book accommodations early to get the most variety.

Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico – that’s a wrap!

Have you seen enough to book your trip? Or maybe it’s already booked and now this just teased you a bit more!

It’s a truly stunning beach that deserves to be seen. But shhhhh – don’t tell everyone you know because the small crowds are part of the allure 😉.

Whether you have 2 hours or a week, enjoy your time at Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico. You’re gonna love it!

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More

Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!

I've been here several times during two business trip in Moscow. The overall quality for both service and food is absolutely top-notch, plus the location is very unique.

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.

Clearing Out of Panama at Balboa

flamenco yacht

Published 13 years ago, updated 5 years ago

The following clearance information is provided to help cruisers entering and leaving Panama. This information is based on two U.S.A. citizens on the 42-foot catamaran “YOLO” with no pets.

We originally cleared into Panama at Bocas Del Toro on 17th Jan 2011 and all related fees totalled $331 U.S. dollars. Next, we cleared into Colon, Panama and transited the Panama Canal, south-bound, which cost us an additional $990 USD. Clearing out of Balboa and Panama (on 2nd Feb 2011) cost $13.50. This document covers our third and final Panamanian port of call.

On Exiting the Canal

Shortly after exiting the last Panama Canal lock you will see the commercial port of Balboa on your port side. Next, you will travel under the Bridge of the Americas. As you pass the Bridge of Americas you should call “Flamenco Signal Station” on VHF channel 12 or 16. Flamenco Signal coordinates and tracks all traffic in the Balboa waters, especially vessels in the channel leading to the Panama Canal.

Flamenco Signal like to know your anchorage location if you plan to drop the hook in the Balboa area. The Flamenco Signal employees speak English and Spanish and monitor the radio 24/7.

Balboa Yacht Club

After passing under the Bridge of the Americas we briefly stopped at the Balboa Yacht Club fuel dock to drop off one of our canal line handlers. The Balboa Yacht Club was on our port side a brief distance from the bridge. The cost of renting a mooring buoy is 65 cents per foot per day at the yacht club. The cruising guides are incorrect, there is NOT an initial $25 USD membership fee to moor at the club. This location is exposed to ship, tug, and pilot boat traffic 24/7, so be prepared to rock all day and night. The club sells diesel only, no gasoline, to vessels staying at their club for $3.32 per U.S. gallon. If they have a surplus of diesel they MAY sell you fuel if you are not staying at the club.

La Playita

We then travelled several miles south in the Balboa channel, turned to port, and dropped our anchor in 30 feet of water at 08.54.515 north and 79.31.453 west. This location is known as “La Playita” and it is located between Isla Culebra and Isla Flamenco. The tide in this bay exceeded 16 feet during our brief stay. This location protects you from strong winds and waves from the north and east, yet you are continuously exposed to the wake of transiting canal vessels and their related workboats. The La Playita De Amador Marina is located about 100 meters away. The marina usually charges $5 USD per day to use their dingy dock, or $110 USD per month. The daily fee for our vessel to stay at the marina was $1.50 USD per foot, 20 cents per kilowatt of electricity, and free water. They have a minimum electricity charge of $5, which is seldom reached during a 24-hour visit. Their diesel fuel was $3.25 per US gallon (cash), or $3.30 if paid by credit card. They do not sell gasoline.

To make a reservation call 314-1730 during business hours which are 0730 to 1700 seven days per week. La Playita De Amador Marina monitors VHF channel 9. After one night of Balboa channel noise and wake, we moved over to the east side of the Amador Causeway between Isla Renco and Isla Naos after contacting Flamenco Signal. We anchored at “Las Brisas” at 08°55.176 N and 79°31.915 W in mud and 30 feet of water. Most cruisers use this anchorage and during our stay, it had over 50 vessels

Balboa Clearance

No agent was required. We took a bus down the Amador Causeway and walked to the Balboa commercial port area, the container port you see just after exiting the Panama Canal. The large sign over the entrance of the port reads, “Panama Ports Company, S.A.” We walked among numerous cranes, trucks, lifts, and containers before finding the “Autoridad Maritima de Panama” (AMP – Port Captain’s office) in the heart of the container port. As far as we could tell, his building has no signage so just keep asking port employees for directions as you walk around the large complex. A small sign on the building states, “Recibo De Mercancia.” This was our third Panamanian port-of-call. The zarpe from our last Panamanian port (Colon) was required when clear-in to and out of Balboa but not the zarpe from the previous country visited.

Business Hours

The AMP Balboa Port office is open 24/7. To avoid paying overtime changes to go to the office during regular hours which are from 07:00 to 15:00, Monday through Friday, 07:00 to 12:00 Saturday and Sunday. The port captain told us we could have cleared at the Flamenco Yacht Club which has an AMP, Customs, and Health officials working 24/7. And, the Balboa Yacht Club has an Immigration official working 24/7.

Clearing Out of Panama

Balboa was our last major port of call in Panama. After clearing out we had a brief visit in the Las Perlas islands (Panama) before heading to the Galapagos. The AMP officer noted both Las Perlas and Galapagos on our Zarpe. We visited the following offices to clear out of Panama:-

Recibo De Mercancia in the Balboa Container Port area. They required one photocopy of our crew list.

Autoridad Maritima de Panama (AMP) office in the Balboa Container Port. They required one photocopy of our crew list.

There is an Immigration office at the Balboa Yacht Club. They required one photocopy of our passports, the Zarpe received from the AMP office and the crew list.

You can get photocopies for 25 cents from the hotel located next to the Balboa Yacht Club.

Although a boat inspection is required, according to the port captain, our vessel was never visited.

Fees can be paid in United State dollars, which is the currency of Costa Rica. Bocas Del Tora has one bank and several ATMs and they dispense U.S. Dollars. There is no charge for clearing into Balboa. For clearing out of Balboa and Panama:-

Recibo de Mercancia office: $12 USD was paid for our zarpe.

AMP Port Authority office: $1.50 USD was paid for the “cashier fee.”

We were told that overtime charges would be $25 USD or more per agency if clearance was required on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday.

Despacho/zarpe for last port

We felt that security issues were low in the Las Brisas anchorage area. This area is a significant distance from Panama City. We were warned to lift and lock our dingy by long term local cruisers. Parts of Panama City, like all large cities, were reported to be very high-risk areas during the day and night.

Goods and Services

Balboa and Panama City: Panama is less expensive than most Caribbean islands/nations. You can find just about anything in this large metro area. Getting to it, or having it delivered, will be the challenge. Many cruisers over-night critical boat parts from the U.S.A. to Panama to save money. If you use the national postal service your deliveries will be significantly delayed at best, or never delivered.

A U.S. gallon of gas was $3.36 and diesel was $3.15 USD. A 2-litre bottle of Coke was $1.85, a loaf of wheat bread was $1.73, and a litre of milk was $1.08 USD. A case of local beer (24 cans, 12 oz.) was less than $10 USD. We purchased 65 pounds of propane for $37 U.S. dollars. There are numerous coin laundries which charge 50 cents per washer. Or, you can send your laundry out to have is washed, dried, and folded for $4 per load.

Trash disposal: Use the large trash drums located along the Las Brisas dinghy dock.

Dinghy Dock: Most cruisers use the Las Brisas floating dock located at the southeastern corner of the anchorage.

Potable Water: You can get free water at the Las Brisas dingy dock or when purchasing fuel at the Balboa Yacht Club, La Playita De Amador Marina, or Flamenco Marina.

Local Communications: Most cruisers in this area monitor VHF channels 16 and 74. At 0800 the local cruiser net uses VHF channel 74.

Additional Comments

You have the option of staying at the Flamenco Marina which is between Isla Flamenco and Isla Perico. Most of the time they do not have slips available unless you made reservations well in advance. To make a reservation call Jessica King at 314-1980 during office hours which are 0800 to 1700 Monday through Saturday. The quoted rate for our catamaran was $3.50 per foot per day, with a three-day minimum stay. The cost of electricity was .22 per kilowatt and water was free. A US gallon of diesel sold for $3.15 USD at the marina, and they also sell gasoline. This large marina is packed with beautiful and expensive local power boats.

Panama City is truly a maze. A well-worn taxi will take 2 cruisers from the anchorage to downtown Panama City for a negotiated $3 USD, a nicer cab will take two people for $5 USD. Make sure you agree on the price before you enter the cab. You can get to the closest shopping district, Plaza 5 de Mayo, by bus for 25 cents. Car rentals can be had for $16 USD per day. Be prepared to sit in a great deal of traffic regardless of the mode of transportation.

The clearance fees associated with visiting Panama are the highest in the Caribbean Sea, based on our experience of visiting over two dozen countries. We paid a total of $313 USD just to clear into Panama! This amount is the minimum you will pay, whether you are visiting for one day in transit or are staying for 90 days. The fees for our second port-of-call (Colon) and transiting the canal totalled $990. The cost of clearing into and out of our final Panamanian city (Balboa) totalled $12.50 USD.

During the first few months of the year, it is easy to find line handlers in Balboa who will travel northbound through the canal. Also, there is no need to rent fenders/tires when travelling northbound. Look around and you will see a pile of canal tires near just about every dock. If you are travelling to the South Pacific you can easily pick up crew members in Balboa. Many land-based backpackers and crew members jumping off other ships are free for the taking.

We picked up several tourist magazines. Several articles extensively covered ecological movements in Panama, rain forest issues, and gave details on how to make monetary contributions to save the jungle. In reality, the marine governmental agencies produced a mountain of paperwork during our three port visit. We left Panama with over 40 pages of government forms in hand, and Panamanian offices had two or three copies of each form in their files.

The Immigration officer during our clear-out process did not want to honour the Tourist stamps in our passports. He wants us to pay him $30 US dollars for the second set of stamps. We refused and he then asked for $25 US dollars to clear out of Panama with Immigrations. We pointed out that Panama Immigration does not charge for clearing out of the country and we paid our Immigration fee when we cleared into Bocas Del Toro, Panama. After a brief discussion, he told us to leave without making any payments to Immigrations.
