Royal Perth Yacht Club celebrates 150 years of sailing on the Swan River

Perth Yacht Club, 1890

The Royal Perth Yacht Club is celebrating 150 years of rich history on the city's Swan River this year.

The club as it stands today is a known institution, its memberships sought after and location common knowledge in Perth.

The sporting institution has grown from humble beginnings.

Heritage Perth's Richard Offen said the first recorded sailing race on Perth's Swan River was in 1841, when a small regatta was held to celebrate Foundation Day.

"It wasn't a roaring success," Mr Offen told 720 ABC's Lorraine Horsley.

Only a few sailors entered the race, with only one entrant in the large boats event.

"There weren't a lot of sailors in those days," Mr Offen said.

"Most people much preferred rowing as a river pastime."

The Royal Perth Yacht Club, originally known only as the Perth Yacht Club, was established in 1865 by a group of sailors who had faithfully organised yacht races every year on Foundation Day.

"It wasn't until 1873 that the committee began making plans to construct a boat house and some moorings," Mr Offen explained.

The club today is situated on Matilda Bay, near the suburb of Crawley.

The original clubhouse was on the Perth Esplanade at the end of William Street.

"In 1880, a jetty was built at the original location," Mr Offen said.

"The club had to take out an overdraft for 15 months as security to get it built.

"The clubhouse opened in 1889, which received very little mention in the press – or, for that matter, in the club's own minute book."

It would be another few decades before sailing reached significant popularity in Western Australia, and by the 1920s, the club was thriving.

"They began to formulate the idea of a move to a better location in 1938.

"But unfortunately, the war got in the way and it was put off several times.

"When finally in 1953, the decision was made to move to Matilda Bay, some of the members who lived in the city weren't that happy – probably because they couldn't come down to the club at lunch time for a quick drink."

Three decades later, yachtsman Alan Bond won the America's Cup on behalf of Australia, ending a 132-year winning streak by the USA.

His win put Western Australia on the map in the sailing world, and the Royal Perth Yacht Club were asked to host the America's Cup in Fremantle in 1987.

Bringing a large scale international event to the state sparked a number of developments by the state government including the Hillary's Boat Harbour, extensions to the railway line, and Challenger Harbour.

The State Library of WA will hold an exhibition showcasing the history of sailboats on the Swan River until May 3.

“Brilliant location overlooking Matilda Bay and the yacht club” Review of Bayside Kitchen

Great spot for coffee or lunch. Recommend the hamburger-large and delicious. Food not cheap but location well worth it. Where else can you sit right by the waters edge and watch the yachts and the black swans.

This is an honest and good place to go for casual food on a great reserve - Matilda Bay. Our food, including late breakfast and muffins with coffee, was really good. The view and proximity to the foreshore was topclass. It made it a very enjoyable visit.

We needed sustenance after walking from the inner city to Matilda Bay one morning. Though the sky was overcast, the Bayside Kitchen stood out like sunshine in the horizon. The place was abuzz with early morning risers and families which added to the Saturday ambience. We secured a table, food ordering at the counter was quickly taken care of and coffees were soon placed in front us. Breakfast orders here are hearty , can be healthy (depends on what you order) and huge. Portions are large but because they tasted so good, we finished everything. Just as well, since we were planning to explore the nearby UWA and then walk on the Claremont.

I love this restaurant. Great menus and a lovely view of the water. Restaurant is right be the beach. I have had their Thai salad, the chicken salad, and a breakfast dish. Beautifully presented and served with good service. In my short stay, I visited this restaurant 3 times. Wish I could have gone more. Highly recommended. Five stars!!!

This café has an unrivalled waterside position. Due to the position, it can get very busy, but the service is good when they are not under too much stress. Great coffee and cakes. While here, do go for a walk along the river. Enjoy the peace and watch the birdlife, plus, if you're lucky, the dolphins.

our NEW HOME

Beer is around 95% water - hence the fixation. ours is sourced directly from the foothills of the yarra valley. soft. unadulterated. with our other raw ingredients, we use organic wherever we can. then we get out of the way as much as possible and wait (and wait, and wait) while the natural flavours develop. traditional brewing techniques take time. slow beer makes for balanced beer., where to find us.

We’re open for beer tastings and great pub food if you’re in the area. We don’t generally take bookings so just turn up and we’ll find you a spot, but if you’re a big group give us a call and we can reserve you a spot in the beer hall. We’re open everyday from 11.30 till late. Find us at 336 Maroondah Hwy, Healesville VIC 3777 or call the team on 03 5957 3200

Phil Sexton completes a Master of Science at Birmingham University’s British School of Malting and Brewing. Inspired by English ales and the small brewery scene, he believes lager-loving Aussies will jump at the opportunity to experience a new world of flavour.

Phil gets his mind opened by the world of beer in Europe, birthing the idea to bring it home to Australia

Phil turns a broken back into a lucky break, and garry, john and peter get around their common goal to change the world of beer, phil and the gang take a novel approach to the supply chain issues that present themselves, taking on the big guys in the process, the now infamous sail & anchor starts serving matilda bay's new styles, bringing a new brewpub experience to western australia, the concept of a different type of pub that appeals to men and women equally is a clear winner, and the team create a second pub in the same vein, it's not only the feel of the venues, but also the look. their next pub the queens would go on to win architectural awards, a bit of good fortune as the america's cup challenge comes to freo and puts matilda bay on the map, redback comes onto the market, introducing australians to their first proper wheat beer experience. another first from the matilda bay guys, with solid foundations of beer and culture, matilda bay charges full steam into expansion mode, always thinking about the next big thing, the guys import a stunning copper kettle to build another new brewery, matilda bay has fully caught the attention of the big boys and they want in. matilda bay becomes owned by foster's group, who go on to become carlton united breweries, after 30 long (or short) years phil returns to matilda bay, rebirthing the brand out of our new home in the yarra valley, it must be in the blood. although a tough year, head brewer harry sexton works with phil and the team to produce a beautiful new range of matilda bay beers.

While recovering from a pretty serious accident, Phil convinces his hang-gliding mates, Garry Gosatti and John Tollis, to join him in starting a brewery. Quality over quantity. They convince Perth entrepreneur Peter Briggs to abandon plans to start a brewery to rival Swan and, instead, stump up the dollars for their dream. Matilda Bay (originally known as Brewtech) is born - the first new blood in Australian brewing for almost a century.

Building begins on a state-of-the-art boutique brewery in Nedlands, a suburb of Perth. Having quality custom kit from Burton upon Trent in England allows Phil to recreate classic beers that have all but passed into brewing history. First hiccup. The big brewers control the market and no one will stock their beer. Solution? They open a pub and microbrewery, converting the rundown Freemasons Hotel in Fremantle into the Sail & Anchor, reinventing pub culture in the process.

The micro brews start flowing. First up, Anchor Ale, a dark, traditional English ale. It is soon followed by a Mild Ale, Bitter Ale, Stout and Porter. The infamous Dogbolter makes it into the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s strongest ale, with one batch coming in at a terrifying 12.5% volume.

The new brewery in Nedlands comes on stream and is considered “probably the most sophisticated microbrewery in the world”. Along with ales and pilsners, they create a second pub – The Brewery Ale House, in Nedlands. WA develops a thirst for flavour. Within a year, sales rocket from $3,000 a week to $50,000 a week.

Another year, another pub. This time the Queens Hotel in Mt Lawley. It goes on to win an Institute of Architects Award in WA in 1988.

Cup runneth over. The America’s Cup Challenge comes to Freo, and the Sail & Anchor is the place to be. The Nedlands brewery is at capacity, and plans to redevelop the historic Swan & Emu Brewery site on Mounts Bay Road are NIMBYed. The search for a new brewery site is on.

Sommer time. Bavaria becomes the place on everyone’s lips with the release of Summer Weizen (German for wheat) – the first Bavarian-style wheat beer in Australia. Incredibly popular but unpronounceable, it’s renamed Redback by the end of the year. Good dog. Dogbolter is re-released with a little less bite. This dark lager develops cult status among the swelling tribe of beer enthusiasts.

Fully invested in expansion. Matilda Bay becomes a public company and purchases the Port Melbourne Brewing Co. to brew Redback and Matilda Bay beers for the east coast. Carlton United purchases 20% of Matilda Bay Brewing. Redback is launched in cans.

Copper load of this. A beautiful French brewhouse crafted from copper (Brasserie De Clerk in Hazebrouck), is transported to North Fremantle to convert an old Ford factory into a striking new brewery. The proud copper chimneys are perfectly positioned to reflect the sun sets over the Indian Ocean.

Waltzing Matilda. Australian brewing giant Foster’s Group purchases Matilda Bay Brewing. The hotel line-up expands to 39 (including the Redback Hotel in North Melbourne). The beer line-up expands to include Bohemian Pilsner.

After losing our way for the past few years, our founder Phil Sexton returns in 2019. Brimming with ideas and creativity, he wastes no time planning a new brewery in the pristine Yarra Valley. All beers will be brewed taking advantage of the region’s pure mountain water and wherever possible the ingredients will be organic. To maintain the natural fresh flavour of the new brews all beers will be unpasteurised and unfiltered.

Plans develop into action. The new brewery is commissioned in March, just in time to be shut down due to the pandemic. However, behind the scenes Harry Sexton, our head brewer, is continuing furiously; a European style Golden Ale along with refreshed Originals, Redback, Dogbolter and Alpha Pale Ale

Our brewing team is related by purpose (and in Phil and Harry’s case, blood). With over 40 years brewing experience Phil Sexton, our Founder and CEO, knows a thing or two about traditional beer styles. Together with son Harry they want to remind people how perfectly balanced the classics can be. They are joined by a passionate and experienced group of brewers and beer lovers from a diverse set of backgrounds.

Phil & Harry Sexton

australia's original craft brewery

At matilda bay, we’ve always done things our own way. back in 1983 a couple of mates and i cobbled all of our savings together, with a mission to prove there was life beyond lager; to wake up drinkers to what great beer, brewed properly, could be. the brewing establishment dismissed us as reckless cowboys. they didn't get it. back then ‘craft’ wasn’t a thing, it was simply what we did. it’s what we still do. it’s the interplay of science, art and a dash of wizardry to create immaculate beers, full of flavour. the revolution had begun. fast forward to today and you’ll find a kaleidoscope of beers, from breweries big and small, in every bottle shop. as brewers race towards extremes, to pursue fads and novelties, matilda bay is back to create beer with naturally amazing flavour. we’ll be re-mastering our greatest hits - beers that were brewed to stand the test of time - and creating future classics using time honoured techniques and just four natural ingredients. always with our own spin. so more than 35 years and 3500 kilometres from where it all started, we’re back to brew beautiful beer again. finally, a sequel that lives up to the original., following in no one's footsteps since 1983, sustainability, yarra valley brewpub, follow us on.

Royal Yacht Squadron in England

The rich and famous are not merely looking for the best place to anchor their yachts; they are also seeking out exclusive memberships in stunning destinations, all offering luxury amenities and, of course, bragging rights. These exclusive yachting clubs with often outrageous initiation fees, provide luxurious clubhouses, and provide accommodations for yachties who want to get their land legs. Most of them provide high-end concierge service to its members as well as Michelin-star quality restaurants and more.

Yacht Clubs have been recognized in the Platinum Clubs of America elections for more than 20 years. According to the Platinum Club, “Recognition in the following categories is important in the selection of Platinum status; Tradition, history, and heritage, a respected membership, excellence in amenities, exceptional service, adapting to changing times, and overall experience.

I spoke with the President of Club Leaders Forum, David V. Smith, about the selection, and he says, “we created an alphabetical selection this time as opposed to by rank because we felt that it was challenging to compare a yacht club in Ireland with a yacht club in Singapore, as amenities, location and facilities do vary quite a lot. The yachting and boating world is a different and unique culture, typically a little more relaxed and not as formal as country clubs and golf clubs. However, many of the world’s finest yacht clubs have wonderful history and traditions, with a great sense of camaraderie among their members. Certain yacht clubs were selected by the Panel not necessarily for their facilities and amenities but in their recognition of hosting world class sailing regattas and events.”

Here are the top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs worldwide being awarded the ultimate Platinum Status for 2021.

Sometime in the early 1600s, sailing for private pleasure started to to become popular in the Netherlands. Later that century, during the Cromwellian years, King Charles II of England was in exile in the Netherlands and while there he became aware of this new and exciting pastime. According to Royal Cork Yacht Club, “By 1720, interest in the sport had progressed so much that his great-grandson, the 26 year old William O’Brien, the 9th Lord Inchiquin, and five of his friends got together to formalize their activities and in so doing established ” The Water Club of the Harbour of Cork.”

This club is known today as the Royal Cork Yacht Club and it is the oldest yacht club in the world. It was originally located on Haulbowline Island before moving to the town of Cobh and finally establisged in it's current location in Crosshaven.

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.

Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.

Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO

Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte

The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.

There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!
