New York real estate billionaire's $40M mega yacht anchored off Sanibel Island

A New York real estate billionaire's sleek mega yacht, the Silver Shalis, was spotted cruising Fort Myers Beach and anchored off Sanibel Island over the holiday weekend.

Built in 2010 by Delta Marine from a ship design by Langan Associates and interior by design house Jonathan Quinn Barnett, the 175-foot, 846-ton craft is owned by real estate tycoon Larry Silverstein.

The vessel, which can sleep 12 guests in six cabins and has a crew of 14 housed in seven cabins, has an annual running cost between between $2 million and $4 million.

The luxury mega yacht, sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, is valued by specialty yachting web sites at a whopping $40 million.

A  yacht tracking website placed the Silver Shalis just off the Sanibel Causeway near the Sanibel Lighthouse   on the east end of the island on Monday and early Tuesday. The vessel has been cruising the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic, visiting Fort Lauderdale at one port of call.

Sometimes, when not pressed into service, boats such as the Silver Shalis are rented out for charters. Such excursions cost from $200,000 to $400,000, or more, a week, according to yachtcharterfleet.com.

Silverstein, 90, CEO of Silverstein Properties in New York, has a net worth of $3 billion, also according to superyachtfan.com .

Dara McQuillan, media contact for Silverstein Properties, confirmed the yacht was the CEO's.

"He is visiting the southwest coast of Florida, and loves it there," she said. 

A lot has been written about Silverstein.

A 2017 article in the Baltimore Business Journal said his company bought the World Trade Center weeks before the 9/11 terrorist attacks destroyed the twin towers. The company rebuilt the complex that includes the Freedom Tower.

The company's most recent acquisition was a lower Manhattan apartment tower. Silverstein Properties purchased at 116 John St., a converted office tower in the Financial District, for $248 million, according to a company statement.

And on Jan. 10, Silverstein Capital Partners — Silverstein Properties’ real estate lending platform — closed on a $2 billion fund committed by its two existing and three new global institutional investors.

Silver Shalis Yacht: Your Insider Guide

The Silver Shalis yacht was built back in 2010 by US shipbuilders Delta Marine. The ship design was handled by Langan Associates and interior design was done by design house Jonathan Quinn Barnett. The yacht was built with an aluminum hull and composite superstructure as opposed to the somewhat more common aluminum superstructure and steel hull. It also features a teak deck.

One of the most notable features about the exterior of the Silver Shalis is that paint job, which is a vibrant cerulean blue. This was a custom job and required a multi step painting process to achieve. 

Who is the Silver Shalis Yacht Owner?

The Silver Shalis is owned by businessman and real estate mogul Larry Silverstein. Silverstein was the developed behind the rebuild of the World Trade Center in Manhattan and is estimated to have a net worth around $4 billion. 

How Big is the Yacht Silver Shalis?

The Silver Shalis is a large yacht , in the range of what many people would call a superyacht, with a length of 179’ 9”. Obviously this is not up in the range of the world’s biggest yachts like the Azzam which get over 500 feet, but it’s still a solid vessel.

The beam of the Silver Shalis measures 32’ 10” across and it also features a gross tonnage of 846 GT making it a fairly hefty vessel for its size as well considering that it’s made with lighter weight materials than many similar yachts. 

How Much Did the Silver Shalis Yacht Cost?

It’s not clear exactly how much Silverstein paid for the Silver Shalis when he purchased it back in 2010 but its current value has been estimated to be around $40 million, which is certainly impressive for a yacht of that age and indicates he likely spent more when it was new. This isn’t in the running for the most expensive yacht in the world by any means, but it’s definitely not cheap, either.

The annual cost to run the Silver Shalis has also been estimated at somewhere between $2 million and $4 million. 

Is the Silver Shalis Yacht Available for Charter?

The owner has not made the Silver Shalis available for charter so, as a result, it remains a private yacht with only limited info available regarding the interior and its amenities. 

How Fast is the Silver Shalis and What Engines Does It Use?

The Silver Shalis is definitely not a speed demon on the water. She has a cruising speed of 12 knots with a top speed of 14 knots. This comes from her twin diesel MTU (16V 4000) engines providing 3,650 HP.. It’s said that she has a range of somewhere around 3,000 nautical miles. 

What’s the Interior of the Silver Shalis Like?

There are many elegant touches on the interior of the Silver Shalis that make it seem like a work of art more than just a simple yacht. It’s clear the owner likes some high class refinement. For instance, the glass enclosed cylindrical elevator that travels silently between decks features accents in oil-rubbed bronze. This contrasts the shimmering metallic silver details you’ll find elsewhere throughout the yacht, including on the exterior.

Details of the yacht are actually very hard to come by as the owner is fairly private and few people have been on board that were willing to share details. For instance, there are almost no images publicly available of what the interior looks like although we have a few here to give you an idea of the appearance and overall esthetic of the yacht. What we do know comes from a handful of news articles that were published about the yacht over the years.

Are There Water Toys on the Silver Shalis?

Like the other interior details, any word on water toys like jet skis and tenders is hard to come by when you’re looking at the Silver Shalis. One thing to remember, though, is that Larry Silverstein is over 90-years-old at this point. It’s quite unlikely that he’s spending a lot of time tearing up the seven seas water skiing or with seabobs these days, so the amount of toys are probably limited and only brought out when he’s entertaining guests and family. 

The Bottom Line

The Silver Shalis is owned by billionaire real estate developer Larry Silverstein. The yacht is believed to have a current value of around $40 million while the yearly operating costs are between $2 million and $4 million.  

The yacht has a cruising speed of about 12 knots and a top speed of 14 knots. It measures nearly 180 feet in length and it features a lightweight aluminum hull while the superstructure is composite to ensure a lightweight compared to similar yachts.

Very little is known about the interior of the yacht as the owner has never made it available for charter and there are no walk throughs available online either. That said, there are a handful of images and details which include the fact there are 6 suites with room for 12 guests and that the yacht can be navigated by a glass elevator. The upper deck features a dining area and that 180-degree glass door to offer great views as part of the striking exterior design.

There has been much secrecy surrounding this year’s launch of the superyacht Silver Shalis from Delta Yachts , who knows why. First marked at just “Project 175038”, the Delta Design Group has taken a fresh approach to designing this one, with a focus on an Asian inspired interior, which is supposed to be as distinct as it it exquisite.

The interior architecture will be of minimalist design, in order to show off the furnishings. They will be made from a combination of textures, tone and elegance, with natural fibers, the highest quality leather, and other textiles that are going to be indulgent, but also for every day living, since the owners will be cruising for extended periods of time. No matter where you are inside, there will be many straight wood grains, as well as a mix of Zen earth tones with monochromatic colors. The interior was designed by the famous Jonathan Quinn Barnett , and the outside by the popular Langan Design Associates .

The hull design will be of the semi-displacement kind, with an all composite body, which will make this 174 foot (53 m) superyacht have a sleek and stylish look, as well as cut through the water at top speeds of over 20 knots, with a cruising speed of 15 knots. She will be able to go over 3,000 nautical miles at 12, with a fuel tank that will hold 14,000 gallons, with a 2,000 gallon fresh water holding tank, there is no telling how far she will be able to go without the need of a port.

The Silver Shalis, at half load will have a draft of just seven and a half feet, and a displacement of 335 tons. What powers this superyacht? The engines are two MTU 16v4000’s, with 2,100 rpm at 3,650 hp, as well as Quantum QC 1800 Zero Speed Stabilizers. Two Northern Lights 99 Kilowatt generators will supply all the necessary electrical needs for the whole ship.

Recently, the Silver Shalis has been spotted cruising around the harbor in Seattle Washington, with it’s new duck egg blue paint. It was seen alongside such other luxury superyachts as the Northcoast 125. She has been being put through her paces, being carefully inspected, put through a series of open water testing, before being released to her owners later on this year.

There are many different websites to choose from, and Delta has their own site, with a showroom of their many accomplishments, including yachts like the Gan Finale, Katya, and Mr. Terrible. Located just a few minutes for the Boeing Field near the Seattle-Tacoma airport in Seattle Washington, Delta Yachts is an 18 acre shipyard. They do much more than new construction, they are also one of the leaders in repairing and refitting superyachts, and one of the few in the United States. When Delta starts building a super yacht, it’s owners can watch it unfold from project plans to completed ship.

Delta Marine have launched their yacht Silver Shalis in 2010 to much secrecy.

The Delta Design Group takes a fresh sheet approach with Project 156039 – though to be yacht Silver Shalis. This chic, Asian-inspired interior will be as beautiful as it is distinctive.

Based on a semi-displacement hull design, this all-composite 156-foot super yacht sports an outside profile that is sleek and stylish to perfectly complement her mod interior. Throughout the interior an array of seamless straight grain woods will be mixed with a monochromatic color palette of Zen earth tones accented with pops of color.

Architectural details are to be minimalist to showcase the furnishings — a sumptuous mix of tone and texture that includes natural fibers, high-quality leathers and tactile materials that are both indulgent yet created for living — as the owners plan to be onboard for long periods at a time.
