Nilaya Superyacht

“ Nilaya will be the world’s lightest aluminum sailing superyacht for her length: She rewrites the script for high-performance superyachts,” Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman said in a statement .

Nilaya ’s interior and exterior were executed by Nauta Design, while her naval architecture comes courtesy of Reichel-Pugh Yacht Design. This duo actually designed the owner’s maxi-racer of the same name. It’s not surprising, then, that the new sloop echoes her predecessor with a racy, low profile, a straight bow, a wide transom and twin rudders.

Royal Huisman conducted a careful weight analysis inside and out to ensure each part of Nilaya was crafted from the right lightweight material. The yard also utilized the carbon-fiber expertise of sister company Rondal. The curvaceous coachroof and guest cockpit, for instance, were made from carbon composite. Nilaya ’s mast, boom and standing rigging are also carbon to keep the yacht’s weight as low and as centered as possible for optimal balance.

Onboard, the 154-footer can sleep between eight and 10 seafarers, along with eight crew. The interiors combine “a modern look with classic elegance” and are said to be light yet warm and welcoming.

Nilaya will reportedly be delivered to her owners in the coming months.

47m Royal Huisman sailing yacht Nilaya delivered

Royal Huisman Nilaya

The 47m / 154-foot high-performance cruiser Nilaya has departed from Royal Huisman ’s facilities in Amsterdam following a successful series of sea trials on the North Sea and subsequent delivery to her happy owners.

Royal Huisman Project 405 was transported earlier this year from the shipyard’s newbuild facilities in Vollenhove in preparation for launch and the installation of her carbon performance sloop rig by Rondal. She was Christened Nilaya, which means “blissful home”, during a private event at “Het Scheepvaartmuseum” (the national maritime museum) in Amsterdam.

This highly anticipated Panamax superyacht is the first to utilize the shipyard’s new Featherlight™ design and production method. Continuous weight monitoring throughout the build of Project 405, aka Reichel/Pugh – Nauta 154, confirms the Dutch builder has achieved its goal of slicing 11% of the weight of its typical advanced aluminum cruising yachts. Most importantly, it has reduced weight without sacrificing stiffness or cutting corners on quality for this high-performance cruiser. The shipyard’s revolutionary Featherlight™ method for this sailing machine is not a single process or construction technique, but a holistic lightweight approach to yacht building combining various complimentary weight-saving solutions utilizing aluminum and carbon fiber components.

Royal Huisman Nilaya

“ For such a large yacht, the acceleration is exciting as she rapidly reaches high speeds, ” says Nigel Ingram of MCM Newport, who served as owner’s project manager. “ Twin rudders and the light, positive steering give superb maneuverability and she has reached all her project targets with ease. Rondal’s sailing systems enable fingertip control of the massive loads involved .”

Nauta Design created the general concept, the exterior design, and the interior design plan with the light, calm, contemporary décor that has been unpacked for the first time now that trials are complete. Ingram continues: “ Below decks, life is as comfortable and quiet as one would expect of the latest performance cruiser from Royal Huisman. The builder’s efforts toward building a light and stiff structure have paid off. ”

Baltic 130 My Song

Mario Pedol reports back from the sea trials of Nilaya, the 47m Royal Huisman custom sailing yacht that is Nauta Design ’s current sail division flagship: “ A full day in beautiful sunny and windy weather in the North Sea off Amsterdam showed how Nilaya’s performance under sail is truly outstanding ,” Pedol says. “ By the time the mainsail was hoisted the breeze had built to a steady 18 knots. We sailed on a broad reach with the mainsail and Code Zero and rapidly reached a truly impressive 17 kt. boat speed. It was just the beginning of a great day of sailing with the Owner and all of the main players of his and the Builder’s teams. This fantastic yacht showed to really match all of the quite demanding main aspects of the Owners’ brief. Royal Huisman masterly succeeded in engineering and building the yacht, fulfilling the Owner’s request in terms of robustness, reliability, quietness and last but not least amazing performance under sail, thanks to super high level Naval Architecture by Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design. ”

Pedol also felt that his studio’s specific request for longitudinal stiffness, a very important performance booster aboard a sailing yacht, was fully met using thorough and deep final element structural analysis.

“ I wish to thank all the team and especially the Owner’s Project Manager Nigel Ingram, MCM Newport cofounder,  for the amazing job done for this great Owner, I wish him and his family many fantastic years aboard this stunning superyacht!”  Pedol concludes.

47m NILAYA Completes First Transatlantic Crossing

By Frances Flannagan

With her name translating to ‘blissful home’ in Sanskrit, Royal Huisman's 47m NILAYA is a stunning sailing yacht that bears bliss not only in her design, but in her exceptional performance capabilities. Recently completing her first transatlantic crossing, her impeccable craftsmanship is showcased as she boasts the title of being the world’s lightest aluminium sailing yacht by length.

NILAYA is a 47m Royal Huisman sailing yacht, featuring design by Nauta and Reichel/Pugh. Towards the end of 2023, this yacht completed her first transatlantic crossing, showcasing her exceptional interior comfort and impeccable performance capabilities. Sailing to Antigua, NILAYA successfully matched her owner’s expectations for speed, robustness, reliability and silence.

She features low, modern lines and a concealed deckhouse, with careful proportions and a broad, open transom. NILAYA is able to achieve 17 knots on a broad reach in 18 knots of wind, showing her to be capable of effortless pace under sale.

Mario Pedol, co-founder of Nauta Design, commented: ‘She will be the world’s lightest aluminium sailing superyacht by length, rewriting the story of high-performance superyachts.’

To achieve this light-weight sailing yacht, Royal Huisman applied its Featherlight methodology adapted from spacecraft technology to NILAYA’s design, coupled with a harmonious collaboration with Nauta and Reichel/Pugh to make significant weight savings. Notably, she was the first yacht built on the yard's featherlight specifications.

‘The final outcome represents a new concept in aluminium construction,’ explained Pedol. ‘Nilaya has a displacement which is 15% more than an equivalent full-carbon boat. That’s a lot less than any other comparable aluminium yacht on the water.’

NILAYA’s exterior profile is as beautiful as it is pragmatic: she features a coachroof that blends seamlessly with the sheerline whilst the hull’s double chines are shown off by the wide stern that flies above the water.

‘A wooden plinth between sections incomposite and the teak deck makes them visually lighter, and also conceals the string lights that illuminate the deck at night,’ commented Massimo Gino, co-founder of Nauta. ‘Teak inserts on the bulwarks, coamings and coachroof further enrich the deck.’

The owner desired an exceptional onboard lifestyle from NILAYA, which is met in the interior design. The interior is centred around the raised-deck house saloon: a magnificent social hub. Finished in a mix of contrasting woods, pale upholstery and inflections of muted blue and terracotta, her indoor areas are a statement of sophisticated bliss.

Guests are offered spectacular 360-degree views in the spacious dining to port and comfortable lounging to starboard, whilst a generous skylight keeps them in touch with the wind and the sails above.

NILAYA features the highest quality build possible, setting her out to be an exceptional and ground-breaking sailing yacht. Her programme remains under wraps; however, hopes are high for her to make an appearance at the St Barths Bucket in March 2024.

"She will be the world’s lightest aluminium sailing superyacht by length, rewriting the story of high-performance superyachts." Mario Pedol, Co-Founder, Nauta Design

Royal huisman unveiled the 47m sailing yacht nilaya aka project 405 aka nauta reichel pugh 151..

NILAYA (the name means blissful home) is a 47m lightweight sloop-rigged sailing yacht made of aluminum and carbon composite. The yacht weighs 11 percent less than typical aluminum cruising sailing yachts. Nauta Design delivered the exterior and the interior design, while the speed specialists Reichel/Pugh made the calculations. Even the owner’s professional racing team was involved. The carbon-fiber rig by Royal Huisman’s subsidiary Rondal has a Panamax height to cross the Panama Canal. The owner’s brief calls for a comfortable yacht with the potential to win superyacht regattas.

“And the owners did not just want to take delivery of such an intriguing yacht; they wanted to be part of the whole process of designing and building it, and enjoy every step of the way. Which is why from the moment of the project’s inception, the owners drew together the team that could realize this experience for them”

The yacht accommodates ten guests, including the owners and a crew of eight people.

Known all over the world for building some of the most impressive sailing superyachts in operation today, Royal Huisman is set to reveal another epic vessel. Both a world cruiser and performance superyacht, the Nilaya is a fine example of what the latest design technology can do.

nilaya sailing yacht

The new superyacht’s lucky owners plan to cruise the world onboard their new home away from home. But don’t be fooled by its name (Nilaya is Sanskrit for “blissful home”) because this luxury yacht has the bones of a high-performance racer. In fact, the owners wanted to replace their previous racing yacht, an experienced regatta champion, with something that would be just as responsive and easy to handle, but a bit more comfortable for long journeys at sea.

nilaya sailing yacht

One way of making the new yacht more comfortable was to greatly reduce noise levels, which was achieved based on complex sound attenuation studies.

nilaya sailing yacht

Another feature that makes Nilaya (Project 405) stand out is that it’s 11% lighter compared to similar advanced aluminum cruising yachts. This was the result of what Royal Huisman describes as a revolutionary method named Featherlight. At the core of this new method, you’ll find the same spacecraft technology that’s used by the ESA (European Space Agency) known as FEA (Finite Element Analysis).

nilaya sailing yacht

Every inch of this yacht, including the lighting, insulation, and the interior, was submitted to this specific type of weight analysis. Based on the FEA modeling, the builder was able to choose not just different materials, but even specific thickness and frame space for the aluminum plates, to ensure the optimal weight for every part of the yacht.

The goal was to minimize displacement without compromising hull stiffness, and the result is a powerful superyacht that is as lightweight as composite versions, but also as robust as all-aluminum alternatives.

nilaya sailing yacht

Royal Huisman’s sister company Rondal developed the carbon fiber mast, boom, and rig, using advanced technology to analyze and predict which components should be made of carbon composite, and which of aluminum. In addition to that, Doyle Sails’ structured luff sail was integrated on a yacht this size for the first time.

As the Dutch builder puts it, it wasn’t just one method, but multiple paths that were used to reduce the superyacht’s overall weight, without impacting performance.

At 154 feet (46.8 meters) this high-performance cruiser sloop can easily accommodate up to ten guests, plus a large eight-people crew. Designed by two reputable brands in the industry, Reichel/Pugh and Nauta Design, Nilaya’s silhouette will be as impressive as its performance, inspired by sleek racing yachts.

nilaya sailing yacht

This innovative sloop is close to completion, gearing up to be delivered to its owners in the following months, just in time for the summer season.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3

National origin:- Soviet Union Role:- Fighter Interceptor Manufacturer:- Mikoyan-Gurevich Designer:- First flight:- 29th October 1940 Introduction:- 1941 Status:- Retired 1945 Produced:- 1940-1941 Number built:- 3,422 Primary users:- Soviet Air Forces (VVS); Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO); Soviet Naval Aviation Developed from:- Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-1 Variants:- Mikoyan-Gurevich I-211 Operational history MiG-3s were delivered to frontline fighter regiments beginning in the spring of 1941 and were a handful for pilots accustomed to the lower-performance and docile Polikarpov I-152 and I-153 biplanes and the Polikarpov I-16 monoplane. It remained tricky and demanding to fly even after the extensive improvements made over the MiG-1. Many fighter regiments had not kept pace in training pilots to handle the MiG and the rapid pace of deliveries resulted in many units having more MiGs than trained pilots during the German invasion. By 1 June 1941, 1,029 MIG-3s were on strength, but there were only 494 trained pilots. In contrast to the untrained pilots of the 31st Fighter Regiment, those of the 4th Fighter Regiment were able to claim three German high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft shot down before war broke out in June 1941. However high-altitude combat of this sort was to prove to be uncommon on the Eastern Front where most air-to-air engagements were at altitudes well below 5,000 metres (16,000 ft). At these altitudes the MiG-3 was outclassed by the Bf 109 in all respects, and even by other new Soviet fighters such as the Yakovlev Yak-1. Furthermore, the shortage of ground-attack aircraft in 1941 forced it into that role as well, for which it was totally unsuited. Pilot Alexander E. Shvarev recalled: "The Mig was perfect at altitudes of 4,000 m and above. But at lower altitudes it was, as they say, 'a cow'. That was the first weakness. The second was its armament: weapons failure dogged this aircraft. The third weakness was its gunsights, which were inaccurate: that's why we closed in as much as we could and fired point blank." On 22 June 1941, most MiG-3s and MiG-1s were in the border military districts of the Soviet Union. The Leningrad Military District had 164, 135 were in the Baltic Military District, 233 in the Western Special Military District, 190 in the Kiev Military District and 195 in the Odessa Military District for a total of 917 on hand, of which only 81 were non-operational. An additional 64 MiGs were assigned to Naval Aviation, 38 in the Air Force of the Baltic Fleet and 26 in the Air Force of the Black Sea Fleet. The 4th and 55th Fighter Regiments had most of the MiG-3s assigned to the Odessa Military District and their experiences on the first day of the war may be taken as typical. The 4th, an experienced unit, shot down a Romanian Bristol Blenheim reconnaissance bomber, confirmed by postwar research, and lost one aircraft which crashed into an obstacle on takeoff. The 55th was much less experienced with the MiG-3 and claimed three aircraft shot down, although recent research confirms only one German Henschel Hs 126 was 40% damaged, and suffered three pilots killed and nine aircraft lost. The most unusual case was the pair of MiG-3s dispatched from the 55th on a reconnaissance mission to PloieÅŸti that failed to properly calculate their fuel consumption and both were forced to land when they ran out of fuel. Most of the MiG-3s assigned to the interior military districts were transferred to the PVO where their lack of performance at low altitudes was not so important. On 10 July 299 were assigned to the PVO, the bulk of them belonging to the 6th PVO Corps at Moscow, while only 293 remained with the VVS, and 60 with the Naval Air Forces, a total of only 652 despite deliveries of several hundred aircraft. By 1 October, on the eve of the German offensive towards Moscow codenamed Operation Typhoon, only 257 were assigned to VVS units, 209 to the PVO, and 46 to the Navy, a total of only 512, a decrease of 140 fighters since 10 July, despite deliveries of over a thousand aircraft in the intervening period. By 5 December, the start of the Soviet counter-offensive that drove the Germans back from the gates of Moscow, the Navy had 33 MiGs on hand, the VVS 210, and the PVO 309. This was a total of 552, an increase of only 40 aircraft from 1 October. Over the winter of 1941-42 the Soviets transferred all of the remaining MiG-3s to the Navy and PVO so that on 1 May 1942 none were left on strength with the VVS. By 1 May 1942, Naval Aviation had 37 MiGs on strength, while the PVO had 323 on hand on 10 May. By 1 June 1944, the Navy had transferred all its aircraft to the PVO, which reported only 17 on its own strength, and all of those were gone by 1 January 1945. Undoubtedly more remained in training units and the like, but none were assigned to combat units by then.
