Review of Phantom 35

Basic specs..

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard diesel engine at 20.0 hp (14 kW).

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenence than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Phantom 35 is 1.81, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Phantom 35 is about 231 kg/cm, alternatively 1298 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 231 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1298 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 15.26

Married to primat boathead.

Every once in a while someone with a Phantom stops by our forum. Everyone thought (I think) that they are no longer made. But they are! So if anyone stops by, we can direct them here for info and parts: http://www.j-pointmarine.com/index.htm I think they should get a better sailmaker - those sails do not look so good. I also wonder why they changed the name. If you visit the Point Marine site, does anyone recognize what a Pointer 12 originally was - I don't recognize that hull. I doubt they built a new mold - I suspect that like the Phantom, they found an old mold and turned whatever the boat was into a Pointer 12. BB

Strange about not selling parts....I would assume that someday, some part on a Pointer 14 is going to break and they are going to have to sell their customers a replacement part. And since they are the same parts...... Unusual business model!

On the Water

Ok I'm new here, but I stumbled accross this thread looking for Phantom information. I bought a 1981 Phantom and I was curious. If any of you own a Phantom, was there some sort of spring mechanism to keep the rudder from floating up while under way? There is a hole in the rudder, but I'm not quite sure what it's for. Any suggestions would be great.

If the hole is midway or towards the lower ended of the rudder it may have been a metal weight to hold the rudder down.

67Stang - thanks for the info. My rudder doesn't stay down. I have to keep pushing it down with the tiller. Maybe I should tighten the tiller pivot bolt

67Stang. I had taken all the hardware off the rudder to refinish it. I'm not sure if the cam is worn out or not. I did tighten the bolt a bit. I'll know Saturday if it works. BTW - If you ever feel like racing, there are races most weekends on Bow Lake. It's mostly Lightnings, but most of the races are open to other classes. I'm going up on Sat. Hopefully some of the Sunfish will show up. I can see the pics after I hit post reply, but not in the main thread.

I don't think tightening the pivot bolt will solve the problem that you are having, it will just make kicking the rudder up stiffer. In the pic, you will see a "cam" tab on the tiller straps, that locks the rudder in down position. When lifting the tiller up and over, the "cam " stop, (forward) it pulls the rudder up and to another "cam" stop, holding it in up position. It takes the lifting of the tiller to go to and from postions. Is the "cam" worn out on your tiller straps? If you still can't view the pics, I can e mail them to ya Click to expand...

Flash - you may want to contact J-point marine. They don't have parts listed online. Ig the pic of the new rudder in this thread is accurate, the rudder looks different but the bracket is the same. I might have a sunfish rudder, but I have the Phantom bracket I tightendthe tiller bolt and things are working fine now.

The J-point marine rudder may look different, but the Gudgeon is still the same. The Jpoint rudder should work on older Phantoms. Here are some pics of my rudder blade. I don't know if it's original (I'm at least the third owner of this boat)

I got to see a Pointer 14 up close and personal last weekend. They have made a few changes, but basically it looks just like a Phantom with Sunfish stripes. I also brought a Scorpion home yesterday. The rudder and daggerboard are much smaller than the Phantom even though the boats are the same size. Makes me wonder where the rudder I have for the Phantom came from. Stang- could you post or send me a picture of your Phantom rudder(s), and possibly the d imensions ?

Stang- could you post or send me a picture of your Phantom rudder(s), and possibly the d imensions ?[/quote] Ok, The 1990 measurements are; The long length is 26 5/8" The short length is around 25 1/2" The width is 7 3/8 " The tiller bar is 44 1/4 " long The tiller extension is 24 1/2 " long The thickness of the rudder is 13/16" thick The 1982 measurements are the same except for: The tiller bar is 44 1/2 " The tiller extension is 25 1/2 " The pics are of the 1990 first , and then the 1982

Thanks. Now I now my rudder is not original. It's about a foot longer than it needs to be. No wonder I had so much trouble with it. I don't know where it came from amd neither does the guy I bought the boat from. Maybe I'll just cut the blade to the original length. It won't look the same as the original, but it might be easier to manage. On another note, one of the Scorpion spars is bent. Can they be staightened or is it history?

MarcM - Depending on what parts you may need, you won't need to rely on J-Point Marine to get them. The rudder assemebly Jpoint uses is different from the original, but the gudgeon is the same. I asked them at one point if the cockpit bailer on the Pointer 14 would work on a Phantom. They said it wouldn't, but would not tell me why. As for sails and spars, I'm using a no logo Sunfish sail, and as far as I can tell, Sunfish spars will work also. A race cut Sunfish sail from Intensity Sails would be a good choice if you need a new sail.

I just bought a phantom rudder from e-bay with no tiller. Can anyone post the specs for the tiller so that I can have one made? What would be a good wood to use to make this tiller? Bob

Did the rudder come with the bracket? The Phantom tiller has a bracket that mates with the rudder bracket to hold the rudder down. The Phantom tiller is aluminum, 1 x 1 1/2, 44 1/5 inches long with a 26 inch extension. I have a tiller but not the extension (I used the extension on the tiller I made for my Viking). You could use wood, but you would need the bracket that attaches to the tiller.

  • Nov 13, 2013

Yes, it does have a bracket. It looks as if the tiller slips between the bracket and there are two thru bolts that hold it in place. I'll know exactly in a few days when I get it. Thank you very much for the information. Would you be willing to sell your tiller? If so what would be your asking price? bob

Rigging for Phantom Sailboat

Howdy, I'm looking for some information on the proper rigging for a Howmar Phantom Sailboat...think sunfish on steroids. Anything I can get would be very helpful. Thanks

Re: Rigging for Phantom Sailboat I have one of these; seems to be rigged like a Sunfish. Short traveler bridle (with a ring on the line) runs from side to side thru holes in the aft deck (knots underneath). Mainsheet attaches to that bridle ring, through pulley at end of boom, through loop on boom, thru boom pulley over cockpit, and down and out thru the rotating mainsheet cleat. Mainsheet should be long enough to allow boom to swivel to point directly forward and still have line in cleat. Top spar has a halyard run up through slot in top of mast and down to bullseye on deck, and led to cleat. Line should be long enough to allow spar to lie on deck and still reach cleat. There is a downhaul line attached to mast ring on boom, this goes down to a loop on the mast (mast has to be slid into the boom ring top first, and then placed into the socket in the deck). I haven't found this downhaul to be very critical to performance; I belive I have a pulley on mine but seldom rig it for 2:1 purchase. A bungee cord from the top of the daggerboard to the handle on the bow; short enough to be under tension, is needed to hold the board up downwind and in shallow water. Hope this helps. Pretty simple rig.

38 dogs were close to drowning on a Mississippi lake. But some fishermen had quite a catch

Image

CORRECTS NAME OF LAKE: Fisherman Brad Carlisle, left, and fishing guide Jordan Chrestman bring one of three boatloads of dogs back to shore after they were found struggling to stay above water far out in Mississippi’s Grenada Lake. (Bob Gist via AP)

  • Copy Link copied

ATLANTA (AP) — By the time fishermen spotted the first head bobbing above the water, the 38 dogs were exhausted and struggling to stay alive.

The hound dogs had plunged into a large Mississippi lake while chasing a deer, a diversion during a fox hunt. Bob Gist, who was fishing on the lake, knew they had no chance.

“A deer can swim the Mississippi River, and those dogs are not going to catch a deer in the water,” he recalled Friday.

They weren’t going to survive, either, Gist and the others realized — unless someone acted right away. The insurance agent from Jonesboro, Arkansas, along with friend Brad Carlisle and guide Jordan Chrestman, headed over in their small boat.

“There were dogs everywhere,” Gist said. “They were kind of swimming in circles and didn’t know which direction to go.”

As the dogs’ frantic owners watched from the shore, the three men started grabbing whatever dogs they could. There were too many to all fit on the bass boat, so three trips to shore were needed.

A photo Gist took during the rescue shows Carlisle standing and grinning in mirrored sunglasses, with more than a half-dozen of the hound dogs perched on the bow. Numbers from the fox hunt are painted on their sides.

Image

Other dogs are standing behind the seats — two of them calmly looking ahead as Chrestman, beside them, steers.

“The hero here is Jordan,” Gist said, as the guide had recognized the danger and sped the boat over. “If it wasn’t for Jordan, there would have been 38 dead dogs.”

The dogs had probably been in the water for about 15 or 20 minutes by then, Gist said. Some of them were so worn out that the men had to reach into the water and lift their heads out. Each dog was then heaved aboard.

By the time the last were rescued, they had been in the water for 45 minutes to an hour, Gist said.

Dogs, especially when hunting, can “follow game relentlessly, as in this case,” said Chris Gurner, a natural resource specialist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which patrols Grenada Lake — but he called it rare for them to go that far from shore. Even though they were on a fox hunt, it’s not unusual for the dogs to go after any animal that startled them, he said.

“Opportunities to help somebody are in front of us all the time,” Gist said. “Sometimes if you see something, do something.”

Philippines won't invoke mutual defense treaty with US after Chinese confrontation at disputed shoal

The Philippines says it has no plans to invoke its mutual defense treaty with the United States after the Chinese coast guard reportedly rammed, boarded and used machetes and axes to damage two Philippine navy boats in a chaotic faceoff that injured several Filipino navy personnel at a disputed shoal in the South China Sea

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines said Friday it has no plan to invoke its mutual defense treaty with the United States after the Chinese coast guard reportedly rammed, boarded and used machetes and axes to damage two Philippine navy boats in a chaotic faceoff that injured Filipino navy personnel at a disputed shoal in the South China Sea.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s key advisers made the remarks in a televised news conference, squelching speculation that Manila might consider invoking the 1951 treaty to secure U.S. military help after Monday’s confrontation at Second Thomas Shoal , where the Chinese coast guard also seized Philippine navy rifles. The Philippine military chief condemned the incident, likening it to an act of piracy, and demanded that China return the rifles and pay for the damage .

The territorial disputes, which involve China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan, have long been seen as an Asian flashpoint that could pit the U.S. against China if the high seas confrontations escalate into an armed conflict. Washington has repeatedly warned that it’s obligated to help defend the Philippines , its oldest treaty ally in Asia, if Filipino forces, ships and aircraft come under an armed attack, including in the South China Sea.

“That has not been considered in our discussions,” presidential assistant on maritime concerns Andres Centino said when asked if the Philippines was considering activating its treaty with the U.S.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said the government did not consider the Chinese coast guard confrontation an armed attack as stated in the mutual defense treaty with the U.S.

“This was probably a misunderstanding or an accident. We’re not yet ready to classify this as an armed attack,” Bersamin said. “We saw bolo, axe, nothing beyond that.”

In what critics may see as a concession to China, Bersamin said Marcos approved a recommendation for the government to publicize the schedule when navy personnel are deployed to transport food, water and other supplies to the Philippines’ territorial outpost in the shoal. A small Philippine navy contingent aboard a long-grounded dilapidated warship, the BRP Sierra Madre , has occupied Second Thomas Shoal since 1999 but China later deployed coast guard, navy and suspected militia ships in a territorial standoff that has become increasingly volatile.

During the hourslong confrontation at the shoal on Monday, Chinese personnel on board more than eight motorboats reportedly rammed and then boarded the two Philippine navy inflatable boats to prevent Filipino navy personnel from transferring food and other supplies, including firearms, to the Philippine ship outpost.

After a scuffle and repeated collisions, the Chinese reportedly seized the boats and damaged them with machetes, knives and hammers. They also seized eight M4 rifles which were packed in cases and other supplies and wounded a number of Filipino navy personnel, including one who lost his right thumb, two Philippine security officials told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The Philippine navy said only one person was injured but the two officials said at least five were treated on a Philippine coast guard ship that sailed close to the shoal to help rescue the navy personnel. The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the sensitive conflict publicly.

China blamed the Philippines for the confrontation, saying the Filipino personnel “trespassed” into the shoal in defiance of its warnings. The Philippines demanded that Chinese coast guard, navy and other ships immediately leave the shoal, which it says is inside its internationally recognized exclusive economic zone, and said it would not yield to Chinese aggression.
