Your Cabin/Suite

Built to accommodate 94 passengers in five star luxury, Sea Cloud II offers a range of beautifully appointed suites and cabins which are furnished with great style. Spread over three decks are 29 deluxe cabins with showers, 16 junior suites with bathtubs, and two owner suites with bathtubs and showers. All accommodations have outside views and the bathrooms, in light marble, are unusually spacious and aesthetically pleasing. Category B and E cabins have double beds that can also be separated into twin beds. Category A, C and D cabins have double beds with two separate mattresses which cannot be separated into twin beds and Category F cabins have one upper bunk and one lower bunk single bed, as was customary on traditional windjammers. The finest, carefully chosen fabrics, combined with leather, rattan and other materials, brass and gold, precious woods and marble together create an impressive ensemble. All cabins have a television with DVD player, minibar, dressing table, wardrobe and a safe. A welcome bottle of champagne and a fruit basket which is replenished daily are provided to enjoy whilst in your cabin. Cabins range in size from 14m 2 to 27m 2 (Cat A cabins measure 27m 2 ; Cat B cabins measure from 21m 2 to 23m 2 ; Cat C cabins measure 20m 2 ; Cat D cabins measure 21m 2 ; Cat E cabins measure between 19m2 and 20m 2 and Cat F cabins measure 14m 2 ).

No expense has been spared to create a sympathetic ambience in both the accommodations and public areas and this is reflected throughout the vessel. Public areas include an elegant lounge, library, fitness centre, boutique, lido bar and hospital. The single sitting dining room is airy and modern and the quality of the cuisine and service will be to the highest of standards, as one would expect on a Sea Cloud II cruise. The Lounge is located mid-ship on the Lido Deck offering comfortable seating areas. The vessel’s magnificent Steinway can be found here and will be played for your enjoyment by an accomplished pianist. In addition enjoy interesting lectures and presentations, or perhaps a drink from the bar. There is also a library on board where you can relax, write postcards, play a board game, find a film to watch in your cabin, send emails from the laptop or just enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Relax on the Lido deck and experience the natural grandeur of travelling under sail whilst watching the sailors manoeuvre the sails high above, rekindling memories of a bygone age.

Your Dining

The cuisine aboard Sea Cloud II is of an exceptionally high standard, and has been accepted by the international Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. Enjoy international dishes complemented by local specialities selected fresh from the market by the onboard chef. Breakfast is buffet style and will include a sumptuous array of hot and cold items with the option to order freshly cooked eggs at the egg station. Lunches are both buffet style and served and subject to fair weather, some will be on the ship’s lido deck and may offer extensive barbecue options, locally caught fish and freshly picked tropical fruits. Dinner is served a la carte and is a four course affair with a vegetarian option always available. All cruises aboard the Sea Cloud II are full board with carefully selected wines and beers served to complement your lunch and dinner. All soft drinks, coffee and tea whilst onboard are also included.

Life Onboard

Whilst there are many large sailing ships offering passages around the world there are few if any that can compare in terms of luxury to Sea Cloud II. Despite the luxurious setting, casual clothing is appropriate and the atmosphere onboard is friendly and generally informal. Service is personal, and the crew of 65 quickly acquaint themselves with passengers and the officers on the bridge are also available to answer questions; manoeuvres permitting. After all, Sea Cloud II is not only a cruise ship, but a private yacht as well.

For your comfort

Sea Cloud II combines the timeless elegance of sailing ships of the past with the highest safety standards and the luxurious comfort of modern cruise ships. The hospital is located on the Cabin Deck and is staffed by a ship’s doctor. In consideration of all passengers, smoking is not permitted onboard with the exception of designated areas on open decks.

Sea Cloud II

Offering a luxurious onboard experience for just 96 guests, Sea Cloud II joined the Sea Cloud fleet in 2021. The three-masted vessel is the sister ship to the original Sea Cloud ship and combines her sibling’s tall-ship romanticism with a host of modern amenities and facilities.

In keeping with Sea Cloud’s ethos of taking guests to destinations found far from the beaten track, Sea Cloud II sails a collection of unique itineraries to the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. The ship’s small size permits access to small ports and hidden islands, offering guests another layer of authentic discovery they wouldn’t experience on a larger vessel. From marquee destinations like Greece and Italy to lesser travelled gems such as Cuba’s Cienfuegos and Cassis in southern France, each voyage promises unbridled opportunities to explore.

While onboard your Sea Cloud II cruise, you’ll enjoy a private yacht-style experience. As the ship crosses seas and oceans, you can relax on deck under gentle billowing sails, enjoy world-class dining experiences, or catch up with new friends in the ship’s lounge.

To learn more about sailing aboard Sea Cloud II or secure your cabin on an upcoming cruise, please call our Voyage Consultants on 0800 008 6677 or submit an online enquiry for your preferred sailing.

Not Big on Cruising? This Intimate Sailing Ship Feels More Like a Private Yacht

Here’s what it’s really like to cruise on the classic sailing vessel sea cloud spirit ..

  • Copy Link copied

On the recently launched 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit , passengers sail far off the beaten cruise path in intimate luxury.

Courtesy of Sea Cloud Cruises

Sailing along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica under full-wind power, fishing lines cast off the back to catch something to supplement the dinner menu, it was hard to believe I was on a cruise ship.

On the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit , there is no swimming pool, no casino, and no pickleball court on board. You won’t find a 24-hour snack bar serving hamburgers and hot dogs at all hours. And yes, you may have to eat some of your meals outside among the natural elements.

In return, however, you get an authentic tall-ship sailing experience with all the amenities of an intimate, sustainably focused, five-star cruise that takes you far off the well-worn tourism path. Travelers can jump off the ship’s swim deck directly into the ocean instead of into a man-made pool; ride horseback on a small family-owned ranch; wander private gardens filled with sloths; snorkel and paddleboard along the reefs of remote and uninhabited islands; or simply spend a day relaxing under the billowing sails.

It’s what Sea Cloud Cruises calls “gentle tourism.” I call it unmatched relaxation on what may be one of the first lines to successfully fill that ever-elusive category of “best cruise for non-cruisers.”

An exterior image of the 'Sea Cloud Spirit' vessel sailing on clear blue water

On the Sea Cloud Spirit , there’s no swimming pool, casino, or pickleball court. Instead it has 69 well-appointed cabins, a spa, a fitness center, outdoor decks, an indoor lounge, a bar and restaurant, and 44,000 square feet of canvas sails.

The Sea Cloud Spirit is the newest and third ship in the world’s only fleet of cruise ships that still sail the old-fashioned way, under more than two dozen sails that are completely raised and managed by hand. It is a small vessel, one whose appearance is more pirate ship than traditional cruise liner. And the overall vibe and experience is one of pure private yacht–style luxury.

The original ship, Sea Cloud , is a legend. Built more than 90 years ago for cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post by her husband, E.F. Hutton, the ship at the time was the largest privately owned yacht in the world.

Sea Cloud II (built in 2001) and Sea Cloud Spirit were built to uphold the ambience of a private yacht and tall-ship sailing inside and out. They feature elegant cabins with ample wood details as well as modern amenities such as comfortable beds and air-conditioning.

Launched in 2021, Sea Cloud Spirit is the newest of the three—and the biggest, at 453 feet in length with 69 cabins. And while that is still quite small by most cruise-ship standards, it features a surprising number of extras without feeling overly cramped or crowded.

There’s a spa and hair salon with two treatment rooms, a relaxation area, a steam room, and a sauna. On the sundeck is a glass-walled library where you can escape the elements to read or play games without giving up the views or sailing experience. There’s also a fitness center from which you can see the water while working up a sweat.

Scattered across the lido and sun decks are a variety of lounge chairs and day beds for sunning and napping under the sails. There’s also a large indoor lounge and restaurant. At the back of the lido deck are the main bar and the outdoor dining area, where most lunches and dinners are provided.

Like the ship itself, the cabins are surprisingly spacious. All are outside cabins, ranging in size from two 140-square-foot solo cabins to 300-square-foot veranda suites. On a recent sailing earlier this month, I stayed in a 272-square-foot junior veranda suite, which had an outdoor deck as well as an indoor seating area, plus an oversize whirlpool tub and a double vanity in the spacious bathroom.

Crew members releasing sails on the 'Sea Cloud Spirit'

A big draw is experiencing the crew unfurling the sails manually.

Setting sail

The main event on any Sea Cloud ship, of course, is setting sail. Our first morning we went up to the sun deck to watch 22 deckhands climb into the shrouds to set and unfurl the ship’s sails while the chief officer explained the process.

Based on their hats, logo shirts, and their keen interest in the raising of the sails, several passengers clearly were sailors themselves. But you don’t have to know anything about sailing to appreciate and enjoy the magic of being powered by the wind and 44,000 square feet of canvas.

The ship doesn’t use the sails after dark for safety reasons, and the captain estimated that the Sea Cloud Spirit operates under wind power about 30 to 50 percent of any given cruise. When not sailing, the ship is powered by two diesel-electric engines that operate entirely on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel.

The itinerary

One of the biggest bonuses of sailing with Sea Cloud Cruises is the small ships’ ability to venture where larger ships cannot go. While the itineraries vary dramatically—the ships sail everywhere from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean and beyond—the one constant is the focus on sustainable activities that keep guests away from heavily trafficked areas.

Our 11-day sailing (which starts at $9,530 for the 2025 version) took us 1,200 miles along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica , through the Panama Canal, down through Panama’s San Blas archipelago, then back to Colon and Panama City.

Our first stop was Playa Panama, a small beach in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste region where some of us hopped on a coach to visit a local ranch that is hoping to preserve and showcase a more traditional way of life by opening up to small groups of tourists. We started with a few lessons in Costa Rican traditions, including tortilla making and coffee roasting, before splitting into groups for zip-lining or horseback riding. Only six of us went horseback riding with the ranch owner and his grandson, who took us on a short cattle drive followed by a leisurely gallop across the sprawling ranch.

In Golfito, Costa Rica, we visited another family working to support tourism while conserving their corner of the ecosystem: La Perica Sloth Garden. The family opened the garden just before the pandemic after discovering the sloth habitat while building trails to help their aging grandmother walk the property. There are so many sloths that you are essentially guaranteed a sighting. Indeed, we saw 10, as well as monkeys and macaws.

After Golfito, the stops became even more remote, ending in the San Blas archipelago, where we visited a small island inhabited by the Cuna people, who have traditionally shunned tourism.

A cabin on the Sea Cloud Spirit sailing ship, with windows, a double bed and sitting area

The Sea Cloud Spirit may be an intimate sailing ship, but the cabins aren’t too cramped.

Life onboard

While much of the cruise is about experiencing and embracing life under the sails, whether that’s relaxing on deck, dancing after dinner, or eating under the stars, during sailings there is also a focus on learning more about the local communities, wildlife, people, and food being experienced along the way.

Onboard for our itinerary was Costa Rica and Panama expert Stephen Westin, who gave insightful lectures on the history of the Panama Canal and the Cuna people of the San Blas archipelago. We also had a guest chef, Cindi Huston from Miami, who supplemented the already generous and diverse menus with her mouthwatering concoctions that included Costa Rican coffee and cocoa-crusted skirt steak, a special coconut fish dish, and ceviche with plantain chips.

There was, of course, a lot of fresh fish on offer, including some tuna, wahoo, snapper, and mahi-mahi that crew members caught while we were sailing.

Passengers on the deck of sailing ship 'Sea Cloud Spirit'

For some, meals out on deck is a plus; for others, they may prefer to eat inside on more balmy nights.

One of my favorite things about the trip was the international mix of passengers. The ships are owned by a German holding company and have traditionally catered mostly to Germans, which makes for some interesting cultural encounters. For instance, after sweltering one windless night during dinner on the lido deck, the crew the next night offered a choice of eating indoors or outdoors. It was just as hot the following evening, but only the Americans opted for the air-conditioned dining room. The Germans laughed, telling us how much they loved the heat.

The crew bent over backward to accommodate the North American minority, hosting an American-style Super Bowl party on the night of the big game, with hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos, and more—all in the air-conditioned lounge.

Sea Cloud luxury sailboat cruising in the Mediterranean on a sunny day

Note that for most of AdventureSmith’s Sea Cloud offerings, the ship is chartered by Lindblad Expeditions and the deck plan and ship amenities are slightly different. Far more than a voyage along the coasts and among the islands of Homer’s wine-dark sea, a sailing journey aboard the 360-foot Sea Cloud is a chance to experience these lands and waterways as the ancients did. Sail into ports with ruins where the seeds of democracy were sown and titans of the era from Plato to Alexander the Great held court.

Sea Cloud Review

Read our detailed review of the 64-guest Sea Cloud with a complete small ship description including deck plans and a photo gallery. An AdventureSmith Explorations crew member has been aboard the Sea Cloud in the Mediterranean. Please read our Sea Cloud review below then contact our European cruise experts to compare the Sea Cloud with other small cruise ships  that are sailing the Mediterranean .

Choose the Sea Cloud because she is enormously elegant, yet also friendly and informal. Dress aboard ship is relaxed and casual. Carved oak panels line the interiors. Bathrooms are fitted with Italian marble and elegantly furnished with period antiques. Parquet floors shine and burnished brass still glows. Original marine oils grace the yacht’s walls. For guests willing to participate, the Sea Cloud sometimes offers a unique tour of participating guests’ rooms, so everyone can see and learn the history of the different cabins available.

History & Sails of Sea Cloud

Built in 1931 by Wall Street businessman E. F. Hutton for his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, Sea Cloud embodies true elegance and poise. The ship was built with entertaining in mind, which makes the cabin tour even more fascinating. There is no sailing ship afloat that can compare for grace, fine service and the sheer joy of sailing. Sails are raised by hand by a spirited crew, who scramble up and down the masts to get the rigging done. When the sails are open, she’s just magnificent. She carries 30 sails measuring a total of 32,000 square feet, with a main mast height of 178 feet.

Common Areas Aboard Sea Cloud

Congregate on deck under the covered Lido Bar and relax in the open-air Blue Lagoon, a semi-circle of shusions at the stern of the ship that was nicknamed by Marjorie Merriweather Post. The sumptuous lounge is the venue for talks and presentations by expedition staff and guests are welcome on the open bridge to learn how Sea Cloud is navigated and sailed. Because Sea Cloud is a truly historic vessel, it is important to note that some passageways are tight and stairwells can be steep. Such original design aspects were made to leave more square footage for cabins and common areas and add to the historic charm of the sailing experience.

Meals Aboard Sea Cloud

Meals aboard Sea Cloud are known to be delicious. Served in single seatings, meals focus on outstanding local and continental cuisine. Excellent wines from well known regions are included at lunch and dinner. Refreshments are always available.

Cabins Aboard Sea Cloud

The magnificent original cabins aboard Sea Cloud feature decorative fireplaces and marble baths, and the newer staterooms are handsome and spacious with wood paneling and a nautical motif. All cabins have a private view of the sea. The Main Deck has the ship’s original cabins, including the Owner’s Suites originally occupied by E.F. Hutton and Marjorie Merriweather Post. Cabins on the Promenade and Captain’s Decks have exquisite furnishings. Each room features a safe and individually adjustable A/C. Bathrooms all have water closets, marble sinks, gold-plated fixtures, hair dryers and outlets for razor.

100+ combined years of experience, 7 continents explored, decades of expedition cruising around the world & here to help you find & book your dream trip.

In terms of overall aesthetics, Sea Cloud Cruises ' 1931-built Sea Cloud is arguably the most beautiful cruise ship in the world. The 2,492-gross-ton Sea Cloud is a deluxe, four masted sailing barque and diesel powered cruise ship that carries just 64 guests but decades of American history.

Sea Cloud Spirit Review

Review of sea cloud spirit.

The 2020-built/2021-inaugurated Sea Cloud Spirit cruise ship is a newbuild full-rigged, 3-masted barque owned by Sea Cloud Cruises GmbH/ fleet (1979-founded, Hamburg -based company). Sea Cloud Spirit is currently the world's largest sailship - with LOA length 138 m (450 ft), GT 4230 tons and DWT 935 tons. The fleetmates are Sea Cloud 1 (1931-built sail yacht, cruiser since 1979) and Sea Cloud 2 (2000-built, 3-masted barque).

The vessel (IMO number 9483712, with yard/hull number "FACTORIA 158") is currently Malta- flagged (MMSI 215855000) and registered in Valletta .

Traditionally for Sea Cloud Cruises, Sea Cloud Spirit is often privately chartered, with a schedule combining regular revenue voyages with time- and voyage charters. The charterers are usually specialized groups renting the ship for events like religious conventions, business meetings, alumni gatherings, private parties (family reunions, birthdays, weddings, celebrations). Some even charter the ship for golf-themed cruises.

History - construction and ownership

The vessel's inauguration (as "Sea Cloud Hussar") was originally scheduled for 2010. However, its construction was stopped after Factoria Naval de Marin (shipbuilding company specializing in luxury yachts) declared bankruptcy in 2010. The Spanish shipyard (in Marin, Pontevedra-Galicia, Spain) produced only the hull and part of the superstructure.

Sea Cloud Spirit cruise ship (Hussar)

The shipbuilding order was placed in 2008. The vessel's construction was restarted in 2018 at Metalships and Docks SAU (shipyard in Vigo, Spain ) with scheduled delivery in 2020. The current shipowner Sea Cloud Cruises is a Kiel Germany -based cruise company managed by Daniel Schaefer (CEO).

The vessel (design "C-158") was commissioned by shipowner Fernando Fernandez Tapias (Spanish businessman, shipping companies owner). The contract value was USD 100 million. Sea Cloud Hussar's construction started in 2008, but due to the economic crisis, the shipyard stopped working, and eventually declared payment suspensions. Hansa Treuhand rejected the vessel because of the project's high cost and uncertain future. The vessel was in its final stages of completion when in July 2010 works were halted due to the shipyard's bankruptcy. The new shipowner (as mortgage lender) became BANKIA (2010-founded merger of several Spanish savings banks).

In 2014, the Vigo-based Rodman Group bought the hull from BANKIA. On May 7, 2015, the uncompleted mega-yacht was launched (floated-out from Naval Marin's drydock). It was towed to the Rodman Group-owned shipyard "Metalships & Docks" (Vigo Spain), moored and waiting for a buyer.

In September 2016, the shipyard signed a letter of intent with Hansa Treuhand Finance GmbH (part of the Hamburg -based Hansa Treuhand Holding AG) to complete Sea Cloud Hussar. In 2018, the ship was acquired by Sea Cloud Cruises and its construction was re-started.

The shipbuilder Rodman Polyships SL (a subsidiary of Rodman Group) is one of the largest superyacht-building companies. Rodman specializes in ship-building and repairs, construction of pleasure boats (made from polyester reinforced with fiberglass), production of large pieces in composite materials, construction of semi-rigid boats. Rodman boats as LOA length vary between 2-170 m (7-558 ft). In 2015, Rodman Polyships had under construction 10x passenger catamarans (84-ft, 350 passengers) and 40x high-speed patrol boats, plus numerous 33-ft yachts.

Sea Cloud Spirit Wiki

The 5-deck superyacht Sea Cloud Spirit has white steel hull, aluminium superstructure, 28 sails (total size ~44100 ft2 / 4100 m2). Main mast's height/air draught is 189 ft (58 m). Max draft is 6 m (19 ft). In addition to the sails, the cruise ship is equipped with diesel-electric powerplant with two MAN-Siemens marine engines running on LS-MGO (low-sulfur marine gasoil). Among the subcontractors are Partnership Design (Boughton UK-based graphic design agency - interior fittings), Bohnhoff GmbH (Halstenbek Germany-based thermal cooking equipment producer - ship's galleys, pantries and bars) and Winteb (Winschoten Holland-based aluminum air vent head producer).

The yacht has 6 service boats - 2x lifeboats (full-capacity) and 4x Zodiac boats (with launching platforms). Zodiacs are large-capacity motorized boats used for coastal exploration tours, landings and passenger disembarkation in anchorage-only ports.

On October 27, 2019, was the vessel's launch (float-out from drydock) at the shipbuilding yard (MetalShips & Docks SAU) in Vigo Spain .

On July 31, 2020, was installed the first (aft) mast (54-m / 177-ft high). The installation was conducted by workers from the shipbuilding company Choren Design & Consulting ( Gdansk, Poland ). All the 3 masts were loaded on the ship with fully equipped rigging (shrouds and stays).

The ship's inaugural cruise was planned for August 29, 2020. However, due to the global health crisis (also resulting in Metalships Shipyard's temporary closure), the vessel's delivery was delayed. When in early-May shipyard operations resumed (in reduced worker capacity), the project-involved European subcontractors didn't return due to the EU's intercountry travel restrictions. For example, the ship's masts (Poland-manufactured) arrived but were not installed, as well as the interior fittings (carried out, but not completed).

The delayed delivery also resulted in major cruise itinerary program changes. The scheduled Caribbean deployment (together with the Translatlantic crossing in November 2020) was canceled and the ship remained through April 2021 in the Canary Islands (Spain).

The ship's first Captain (Master) is Gerald Schober (1966-born). Traditionally for Sea Cloud Cruises, Sea Cloud Spirit is operated with "open bridge" policy that allows passengers to visit the Wheelhouse, communicate with the Captain (officers on duty).

Ship christening 2021

On August 18, 2021, was announced that Sea Cloud Spirit's godmother will be Her Royal Highness Infanta Dona Elena of Spain, Duchess of Lugo (1963-born as Elena Maria Isabel Dominica de Silos de Borbon y de Grecia). HRH is the first child of King Juan Carlos I of Spain (1938-born as Juan Carlos Alfonso Victor Maria de Borbon y Borbon/reign 1975-2014) and Queen Sofia of Spain (1938-born as Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark). Infanta Elena of Spain has a younger sister - Infanta Cristina (1965-born as Cristina Federica Victoria Antonia de la Santisima Trinidad de Borbon y de Grecia) and a younger brother - Felipe VI (1968-born as Felipe Juan Pablo Alfonso de Todos los Santos de Borbon y Grecia) who is the current King of Spain (ascended the throne in June 2014).

The cruise ship's christening ceremony was held on September 3, 2021, in Port Palma de Mallorca (Majorca Island, Balearic Spain) .

  • At the beginning of the boat's construction, Javier Arias-Camison (shipping lawyer, Sea Cloud Cruises' legal representative) made a promise to bring on foot two champagne bottles to Santiago de Compostela (Galicia) and bless them there.
  • The Champagne for the naming ceremony has been blessed following a 5-day pilgrimage (~120 km / 75 mi) to the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.
  • One of the bottles was traditionally crashed on the hull (during the ceremony). During the Maiden Voyage (September 14 -24, 2021, from Civitavecchia-Rome ), the other bottle was auctioned off for charity.

Unfortunately, as the aristocratic Godmother was unable to participate, her role was taken by Inigo Echenique Gordillo's wife Gabriela Toran. Inigo Echenique is a Spanish luxury yacht designer (1957-born).

Americans whose yacht was hijacked in Grenada were likely thrown overboard and died, police say

Two Americans are presumed dead after they vanished from their yacht in Grenada , leaving behind evidence of a bloody struggle, police in nearby St. Vincent and the Grenadines said Monday.

While loved ones of Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry are hopeful that the American retirees and sailing enthusiasts could still turn up alive, St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Superintendent Junior Simmons offered a more somber assessment.

"Based on the investigation thus far, it is presumed that Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel are deceased," Simmons said in a video statement Monday afternoon .

Kathy Brandel, front left, and Ralph Hendry, front right, with family.

Hours earlier, police in Grenada said there's still hope to find the couple.

But Royal Grenada Police Commissioner Don McKenzie also said he's offering “condolences” to the family of the two American boaters, who were most likely “disposed of” at sea by escaped prisoners. McKenzie said there's a “low probability” Brandel and Henry might be alive.

Three accused criminals escaped from jail on Feb. 18 before they "commandeered" the couple's boat, called Simplicity, and headed north, McKenzie said. Police have said the escapees boarded the boat while it was docked in the St. George area of Grenada.

"They headed to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Information suggests that while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, they disposed of the occupants," McKenzie told reporters.

Asked whether investigators have an idea where the "missing" Americans might be, McKenzie flat-out said, "No."

"We have nothing conclusive to say that the individuals are dead," he added. "We still hold out hope that, in spite of what might be a low probability, they will turn up alive somewhere, that they're alive."

Simmons in St. Vincent and the Grenadines left little doubt of his opinion in the probe “into the disappearance and presumed death of two United States citizens ... Ralph Hendry and his common law wife Kathy Brandel.”

In an interview that aired Monday on NBC Nightly News, Rob Maher, a friend of the couple who acted as their emergency contact, said that the situation was “like a bad Hollywood movie.”

“It’s hard to think of their last moments with the idea that they might have been thrown overboard alive. It’s difficult to conceive for a friend,” he added.

Couple's sons are in the Caribbean

The couple’s sons called the pair’s disappearance “the rarest of the rare occurrences.”

Brandel’s son, Nick Buro, and Hendry’s son, Bryan Hendry, told NBC Washington that they first learned the couple were missing after U.S. consular officials in Barbados contacted them.

A good Samaritan who found the pair’s abandoned boat contacted the Salty Dawg Sailing Association , whose flag was flying on the mast, and word made it to the two sons, too.

They said they were told the couple vanished after three men escaped from police custody Feb. 18 and boarded their boat in Grenada the next day, Buro said.

Buro said they were told an “altercation of violence took place" on the boat, adding that there was evidence of the violence and that the couple’s possessions were "strewn around all over." Items had also been stolen.

McKenzie said, "What I can say to the family is my condolences and we are still hoping for what I consider a positive outcome, which is we still have the hope that our worst-case scenario will not be a reality."

The scene on the couple's boat was "consistent with signs of violence," Simmons in St. Vincent and the Grenadines said.

"Several items were strewn on the deck and in the cabin, and a red substance that resembled blood was seen on board," he said. "There was no discovery of bodies on board the yacht."

The escapees were caught by police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday and are in custody there, according to Buro and officials.

Police told Buro that they have questioned the suspects multiple times, and he said the family expects charges soon.

Buro and Hendry are in the Caribbean and have been speaking with authorities, including the St. Vincent and the Grenadines police and coast guard, and they expressed their appreciation.

A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department said it is aware of the reports involving two citizens missing in the vicinity of Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines but did not identify the couple. The official added that U.S. authorities are coordinating with local law enforcement officials as they carry out their search efforts.

“We are monitoring the situation and seeking additional information,” the spokesperson said. “The Department of State has no higher priority than the welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad. We stand ready to provide appropriate assistance to U.S. citizens in need and to their families.”

Life on the water

The couple met in Virginia and have been married for 27 years. They raised the boys together in the state, where they lived until 2013, selling their home in Alexandria to trade it in for Simplicity and life on the water.

"They wanted to see the world. They wanted to experience life. They wanted to see what the world had to offer outside of their small window of living in one place and being mobile and being able to have a different adventure every day — that’s like the definition of living," Buro said.

Buro said that the family has always been close and that they talk often. He considers Ralph Hendry his father and Bryan Hendry his brother, and he said he knows Hendry feels the same way about him and Brandel.

The couple “lived with a sense of wonder and love,” Hendry said.

“They loved immersing themselves in different cultures and meeting people and spreading their love wherever they could,” he said.

Buro echoed his stepbrother’s sentiments.

“You’ll never meet more beautiful people than Kathy and Ralph,” Buro said. “They were there for people when they needed it most, and I just, they’re my inspiration for everything, and I can’t express how much I love them, and I know everybody else who knows them feels the same way.”

The couple had been planning the trip down to Grenada — their first to the Caribbean island — for “years and years and years, training themselves, preparing the boat, preparing themselves ... to make the trip,” Hendry said.

It was going to be a “very long trip, not to be taken lightly,” and the couple felt they had “prepared themselves adequately,” Hendry said.

They made the voyage down with the Salty Dawg Sailing Association, and everyone arrived safely, Buro said.

Bob Osborn, the association's president, said the situation was upsetting and tragic.

“In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this,” he said in a statement.

Yacht 'was their home'

Buro thinks his mother and stepfather could still be alive.

“We still think there’s a chance that they’re out there," he said. Because the investigation continues and St. Vincent and the Grenadines police were "quick to apprehend the suspects and are searching," there is hope.

"We still hope that they are OK and that we can bring them back," Buro said.

He said that the entire situation "is something that is completely unexpected" and that they are trying to understand the "senseless act of violence against two people that were just living their lives in their home."

Buro said the couple worked hard on their dream and had become seasoned sailors. Simplicity “was their home,” he said.

He said the couple’s top priorities were always safety and security, “to make sure everything they did was safe and was going to keep them safe.”

“To have that turn out in a way where something out of their control took that away from them is what’s so horrific about this and so sad, because they were just, this is just something that they’ve always wanted to do, and they did it, and it’s just, it breaks our hearts,” Buro said.

The US Navy's new floating base for Marines and Navy SEALs is named for a Vietnam war hero

  • USS John L. Canley joined the active fleet as the US Navy's newest warship, a floating sea base.
  • The Canley is the Navy's sixth expeditionary mobile base (ESB).
  • The first of its name, the warship honors the Vietnam war hero, the late Sgt. Maj. John L. Canley.

Insider Today

The US Navy commissioned a new warship earlier this month, a massive floating sea base named after a Vietnam war hero.

The first of its name

sea cloud 2 yacht

Born in Caledonia, Arkansas, in December 1937, John Canley went on to enlist in the Marine Corps in 1953.

In his nearly 30 years in service, Canley was deployed on three combat tours to the Vietnam War, serving as a rifle platoon leader, company gunnery sergeant, and company first sergeant before retiring as a sergeant major in 1981.

In 2018, Canley was awarded the nation's highest military honor for his actions during the Battle of Hue City in Vietnam in 1968, when he carried more than 20 wounded Marines to safety while under enemy fire. He also took command for three days of Alpha Company, 1st battalion, 1st Marines after his company commander was wounded.

He became the first Black Marine to receive a Medal of Honor while still living.

Honoring the ship's namesake

sea cloud 2 yacht

Canley died on May 11, 2022, in Bend, Oregon, of complications related to prostate cancer. He was 84.

He was honored by the ship's crewmembers in a memorial service and buried with full military honors at the Arlington National Cemetary.

"The actions in the face of danger Sgt. Maj. Canley took are incredible and remarkable," Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Troy Black said in 2022. "Sgt. Maj. Canley was a leader and a warfighter who undoubtedly contributed to the battles won in Vietnam."

"His first priority was and has always been his Marines — a true example of Semper Fidelis," Black added. "I'm saddened by the loss of such a great Marine, yet I'm grateful for the legacy he established for generations of warriors."

Joining the active fleet

sea cloud 2 yacht

USS John L. Canley joined the active fleet in a commissioning ceremony at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California, on February 17.

The third largest flight deck of the US Navy

sea cloud 2 yacht

Canley's legacy lives on in the Navy's newest expeditionary sea base, the first of its name and the sixth ESB to join the Navy's active fleet.

The Lewis B. Puller-class warship acts as a highly flexible mobile staging area to support military operations at sea, including the Marine Corps, special operations forces like the Navy SEALs, and other embarked units. It can also serve as a mothership for unmanned aerial systems.

It is designed to include aviation facilities, equipment staging support, and command-and-control assets.

With a length of 785 feet, it also has the Navy's third-largest flight deck. The diesel-electric vessel has four large rotary-wing landing spots that can support nearly every helicopter within the joint forces: MH-53E Sea Dragons , MV-22 Ospreys , CH-47 Chinooks , CH-46 Sea Knight , AH-1 Cobras , and AH-64 Apaches .

Fully loaded, the Canley has a displacement of 90,000 tons and can travel at 15 knots with a range of 9,500 nautical miles.

Supporting a variety of operations

sea cloud 2 yacht

General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company built the mobile sea platform. David Carver, President of General Dynamics NASSCO, noted the "remarkable capabilities" of the Canley.

"Canley has substantial residual space, weight, and power to accommodate a wide range of current and future, manned and unmanned, surface, aerial, and undersea systems across multiple warfighting functions," Carver said. "This is a massive, capable, flexible warship that gives fleet commanders decision space they need throughout their operating theaters."

The ship can accommodate MK-105 mine sleds, rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) used by SEALs and Marines, and twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The ship can also carry high-speed interceptor patrol boats and has weapon mounts and stowage space for weapons and ammunition.

A look inside the Canley

sea cloud 2 yacht

Xavier Vavasseur, chief editor of Naval News, toured the Canley with Capt. Thomas Mays, the commanding officer of the ESB.

They walked through the ship's parking-garage-like structure, where the crew could store boats and vehicles.

"One of our primary mission sets is US Marine Corps aviation mine-sweeping," Mays told Naval News. "The MH-53 can drop sleds in the water, and then sweep a minefield free to enable an amphibious assault if needed."

Flying low over the water, the powerful MH-53 tows the sled through the minefield to trigger any lurking mines so ships can later pass through.

Operating with the Navy's Forward Deployed Naval Force

sea cloud 2 yacht

Mays said the ship's crew will undergo a few more months of certification and training before likely joining the USS Miguel Keith (ESB 5) in the Seventh Fleet operating area in the Western Pacific.

Christened by Canley's daughter

sea cloud 2 yacht

A few weeks after his death, Canley's daughter and the ship's sponsor, Patricia Sargent, christened the ship in a time-honored tradition, breaking a bottle of sparkling wine across the ship's bow in a ceremony in June 2022.

She delivered an address during the ship's commissioning in February 2023, highlighting her father's heroism and other Marines in the Vietnam War.

"To be able to give the order to bring this ship to life, I need to give you some information in regards to my father," Sargent said. "My father understood that greatness is not achieved by the individual; it is achieved by the courageous acts of the many. The Marines of Alpha Company 1/1 are an example of that in what they achieved in the Battle of Hue City."

"This ship will achieve greatness, but it will only do that by the courageous actions of the many," Sargent continued. "It is in honor of my father, my family, members of the 1/1, and the great people of the United States that I give the command: officers and crew of the USS John L. Canley, man our ship and bring her to life!"

'A beautiful ship named after a very brave man'

sea cloud 2 yacht

Paul Garcia recalled his time serving alongside Canley in 1968, saying he "earned the respect of every member of our unit because of his selflessness during combat."

"During major battles, he'd go out into the open and save Marines after they were shot," Garcia told the Orange County Register. "I just feel honored I served with him."

Garcia was part of a private tour of the warship following its commission, describing it as a "beautiful ship named after a very brave man."

"It will afford the Marine Corps the ability to be prepared in any location to attack in an amphibious landing," he said.

'An inspiration to all who follow in her wake'

sea cloud 2 yacht

"It is my firm belief that USS John L. Canley will serve as an inspiration to all who follow in her wake," US Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro said during the commissioning ceremony earlier this month.

"It is my sincere hope that for those who come aboard this ship — those in the United States Navy, the Marine Corps, Military Sealift Command — when they cross that bow, they're also challenged to live up to the unwavering devotion to duty that this ship's namesake."
