, and it's a , a South Coast 22. It has a fine , but no or boom. I plan on building, but I don't know whether I'm better off with or spruce. I'm very good with tools, woodworking, all kinds of fabrication, my question is: what's going to be better for this boat--aluminum or ? Or should I search for old ?

a South Coast 22 is worth maybe $1,500. It will cost far more than that to get this one back on the , even assuming you do the rehab yourself.

At this point I have to seriously consider selling what you can for scrap value and that is ready to sail. It is simply almost never worth trying to rehab an older boat without a .

That being said you could try and track down an appropriate sized aluminium mast and boom somewhere. But still leaves a lot of still to do.

, however the is not a consideration here, nor is resale value. Giving this fun little boat a new life is my , so time and dollars are of secondary importance. That being said, ALL input is appreciated, and the value of a fully functioning SC22 is good information to have. Thanks.

guess) that the extrusion will run about $2,000 plus . Next up you need to have someone make a set of shrouds I would call rig rite and have them quote it (they may also sell you the mast) at the same time figure another $200.

Finally you will need . A set of new sails for the boat will probably be about $3,000 for the working sails. Plus another $1,500 or so for a if you choose to add one.

All up I think you are looking around $7-$8,000 worth of assuming you do all the yourself and buy new. Used you can probably cut this in half, maybe by 2/3's. Just to get the boat sailing again.

You will also need to add a small at around $800.

If I had to guess, by the time you put it all together you will have something around $10,000 in the boat to get it on the the first time. Even as a labor of love this ends up seriously upside down on the boat.

The other option if the itself has sentimental value is to find a SC-22 somewhere that is in decent shape and buy it for parts. This would likely be far cheaper than sourcing the parts individually.

for an O'Day 22 from DRmarine.com shows mast complete with = $2000; boom with = $430; two sails = $2000. That's $4500 right there. Add at least 25% for other necessities. Then add running rigging. Holy crap, that stuff is expensive. Does the South Coast have a ?

Consider: I paid $1000 for a fun and complete boat. That includes and an almost new 4-stroke and many accessories.

If you take Stumble's low estimate of 1/3 of $7k (= $2300) for used , and give it to me, I'll give you my entire kit for you to part out for your South Coast. I'll use the $2300 to buy another boat and put the extra $1300 in my future big boat kitty.

But I'm answering I'm answering a question you didn't ask. So we need clarification: How do you define 'better for this boat'? Given what you've told us so far, the choice between and wooden spars is a matter of your own personal preference. I'd choose aluminum for its long life and minimal requirements. I'm guessing aluminum is lighter, too. If I'm right, it would be better for a light boat like the SC22.

is not .
18-05-2016, 21:23
. I'm sorry I gave the impression was ONLY an empty hull. I honestly feel like a thief, I paid so little for this boat.

The fact remains it needs a new mast, band it looks like it's going to be aluminum, because NOBODY I've talked to has Sitka spruce available.

Thank you all for your .

South Coast Seacraft Co.

Founded by Hollis Metcalf, the South Coast Seacraft Company of Shreveport, Louisiana began production of the SC 23 and SC 21 in 1965. Both Carl Alberg designs. In a effort to capitalized on the emerging trailerable cruising boat market, Metcalf and his chief engineer, James Monroe, redesigned the SC 21 to include larger accommodations and a swing keel, which became the SC 22 and their most successful boat by far with over 3000 produced. In 1975 the company was sold to a group based in Chicago and the plant closed in June of 1981. Over 4,000 South Coast sailboats were produced.

Hi Well where to start? This is my 1st sailboat. no Boom, rudder or sails. 1st question is I have a 25' mast how long of a boom will i need? So far last weekend I spent scrubbing scrubbing and more scrubbing. It looks like I will be repainting inside. outside of this boat is a bit milky but I'm hoping it will polish out.

The SC-22 is a very popular Alberg-designed trailer sailer. Lots of info online, including the sailplan. Take a look or contact the owner's assoc for more details. Good luck with your boat. http://southcoastus.tripod.com/

Fly_H23

If you have a main sail that came with the boat, measure the short end (bottom or foot) your boom needs to be a tad bit longer than the foot of your main sail. Noticed that you sail you don't have sails...this is like buying a car without a motor or wheels! Hope you can source all the parts you'll need.

try to backtrack to the last owner that stuff may have stored in a safe place to keep it pristine for when the rest of the boat was ready. put the mast up and verify that it's in good shape with good hardware and running rigging. are you trying to fully restore a boat or do you just want sail, learn a new language and meet really neat people? welcome to Trailer Sailers

There is a kickup rudder and tiller for sale in the gear for sale section of this web site. It may work for you. http://catalina.sailboatowners.com/...ce&page=show_ad&catid=19&adid=3109&Itemid=220 IF this link doesn't work, go to classifieds at the top of the page, gear then click for sale.

Aalso, here is the specs for your sails for Sailrite. You can buy a kit form them and build the sail yourself. Great winter project. I bought a spinnaker kit from them and sewed it up last winter. Flew it yesterday. It was a lot of fun. http://www.sailritesails.com/ShowAd.aspx?id=7023&SourceID= 0 &BoatName=SOUTH+COAST+22

southcoast 22 keel problem

  • Add to quote

I have just purchased a 1974 Southcoast 22 and the swing keel does not drop all the way and something seems to be stopping it. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

south coast 22 sailboat review

Here is the spec for the South Coast 22': SOUTH COAST 22 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com I suspect that your swing keel weighs 500 Lbs. which should drop easily. What often happens with swing keel/center board boats is that marine growth jams up the slot or trunk where the swing keel lives. You are going to have to get into the slot with a flat metal tool and try to knock as much growth out of there as you can. I do this every year for the center board slot on my Tartan 27'. I get piles of barnacle shells falling out when I do this. A reasonable tool for this job is a flat metal bar or a small wood or sheet rock saw.

Thanks . It was a fresh water boat. Does the keel have a locking pin? I have read somewhere that the Southcoast has one but I see none. Thanks for the help.

Been working on my southcoast keel for about six months now off and on while the boat sits up on bocks at a friends house. My keel came free of the trunk pretty easily but then I found the solid resin skin had been comprimised to the point of about 70% delamination from the now rusting cast iron. I expect you freed yours by now, there is a lot of room in the trunk so just be 100% sure of your cable or blocks so it does not fall unexpectedly. Then you will need to chip off any loose resins to bare metal and sandblask and prime to seal out new rust before starting to put things right. I installed a set of new bronze eyelets for the main bolt hole and the lift cable hole and glassed/resined them in place after a snug fit into a drilled out hole. This will keep the pin and cable bracket from digging back into the resin and exposing the iron to water again anytme soon and after this job you will want to forget about the keel for a few years. I used a new 316 stainles keel bolt with SS retaining clamps and installed a PVC skid plate onto the leading bottom edge of the keel after final fiberglass applications to protect the fiberglass edge from running aground and exposing the iron. Simply cut a piece of pvc pipe in half and fiberglassed about 12" of one half onto the lower leading edge. If you are already where I am, let me know if you had to strip the keel resin. I need to know what a good fairing job looks like for this particular keel but have not found anything yet to look at that is in good shape to see what shape that might be. I expect I have some work still to do in that area.

south coast 22 sailboat review

Hi there, i know this is a very late post but am looking for some help. I just bought a SC 22 and the previous owner had removed the fiberglass fro. Around the main pin in the cabin. I dont know if i can just re fiberglass directly over the pin. Does the pin rotate in the fiberglass?? Any help would be really appreciated.

OH, they do have a locking pin but it should be visible as an extra bolt just aft of the keel pin location. I believe there may also be a "up" position lock hole for the bolt forward of the main bolt but my boat doeas not have either anymore. I suspect for a boat this size they become a pain to remember to reposition each time the keel is adjusted and would not allow for locking in the keel at intermittent positions. also likely allowed water to spalsh in some possibly.
