Biscayne Bay is a vast 35-mile long lagoon between Miami mainland and the barrier island of Miami Beach and south to Biscayne National Park marine sanctuary at Elliott Key. Ideal for sport fishing, boating, scuba diving and other recreational activities, including boat tours of the private islands that are home to many celebrities and uber-wealthy of the world. Fisher Island is only accessible by ferry or private boat to residents, hotel guests and members only. An interesting historical fact: In 1925, William K. Vanderbilt traded his 250-ft. yacht for the 7-acre barrier island owned by Carl G. Fisher! Another private island located in Biscayne Bay, is the 86-acre man-made Star Island enclave of celebrity homes. This island, accessible via a causeway from mainland Miami, is gated and secured for privacy. Tour boats offer glimpses of the luxury lifestyle of these secluded residences.

Bayside Marketplace is a bi-level open-air festival center on Biscayne Bay in the “heart” of Miami’s downtown area and the #1 tourist attraction in Miami. Visitors can experience the international character of Miami, with its variety of cuisines, fine shops, free live music performances and diverse culture. One can take the Water Taxi Miami service from Bayside to Miami Beach Marina, Key Biscayne, Coconut Grove and other destinations. Miamarina at Bayside offers 130 slips and is the embarkation point for various charters and boat tours for cruising the Bay, gambling cruises or viewing celebrity homes on Star Island. Besides the glamour of the Miami Yachting Lifestyle, PortMiami is the largest cruise terminal in the world and home port location of every major cruise line and some of the largest cruise ships in the world. Currently, cruising activity has been suspended through October 31, 2020. Contact USCG Marine Safety for status updates if you are considering a cruise. PortMiami, known as the Cargo Gateway of the Americas, is a global gateway for cargo, being strategically located at the crossroads of east-west and north-south trade lanes. PortMiami links world markets with the United States. A fast-access tunnel provides a direct connection to the Interstate highway system, alleviating downtown Miami of 80% of port traffic.

Marinas in the Miami area are Coconut Grove’s Dinner Key Marina featuring the largest wet slip marina (582 berths) plus 225 moorings just offshore and dockside restaurant, Monty’s Raw Bar. Miami Beach Marina is located at the southernmost point of South Beach; 400 slips accommodate luxury charter yachts to dive boats. Onsite restaurants are Texas De Brazil and Monty’s Raw Bar. Smith & Wollensky steakhouse is nearby, with breathtaking views of Fisher Island and cruising yachts. Crandon Marina is located on Key Biscayne and is an easy distance to artificial and natural reefs for great scuba diving and fishing. Its docks offer a perfect view of the bay and city skyline at sunset. Bill Bird Marina in Haulover Park on North Miami Beach is located on the AICW for convenient access to other waterways and is surrounded by a golf course! Pelican Harbour Marina in North Bay Village in the Miami Shores area is also on the AICW and is a 10-acre bird sanctuary island with picnic tables, BBQs and sand volleyball courts. South Dade Marinas include Matheson Hammock Marina in Coral Gables and Herbert Hoover Marina in Homestead Bayfront Park. Black Point Marina in Cutler Bay (southern stretch of Biscayne Bay) is the gateway to the Florida Keys near coral reefs and the marine sanctuary.

The Progressive Miami International Boat Show is slated to be held again at the Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin on Rickenbacker Causeway in Key Biscayne on Feb. 11-15, 2021. According to 10times, the show is “one of the largest and most influential boat shows worldwide.” Attendees from all over the world can view vendors’ state of the art boats and megayachts at this glamorous show.

Beginning up top, Samurai’s vast sun deck features an elevated Jacuzzi from which guests can take in the panoramic views and water-jet massage. Large sunpads here offer lots of space for sunbathing, while a protected lounging area nearby offers respite from the sun. Guests are shielded from the wind by glass paneling that surrounds the deck and offers unobstructed views of the water.

WHEELHOUSE DECK

This spacious level of the yacht is reserved for outdoor dining on the aft deck, or indoor relaxation in the salon. An oversized outdoor table is ideal for meals prepared by the yacht chef or Sunday morning brunch served by the crew. Aft of the table is an outdoor living space edged with white sofa seating and centered by two large low tables. Moving indoors, the salon offers various conversation areas with sofas and loose armchairs, and is an excellent option for movie nights or social gatherings. All the way forward, a Portuguese bridge leads to a quiet spot laden with sunpads and optional shading to take in the views.  

The main deck aft features an intimate seating area outdoors, ideal for a late-night cocktail. Once inside, a vast, full-beam main salon with Asian-inspired décor welcomes guests to a plush lounging space with plenty of seating and floor-to-ceiling windows that bring in the outdoors. Just forward, a formal dining space seats up to ten guests and boasts two recessed ceiling panels that are well lit and edged in black lacquer.

When there’s a home or property for sale in Indian Creek Village, you can bet there’s a lot of interest. After all, the island off Biscayne Bay near Miami Beach has famous residents like Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, French music producer David Guetta and Ivanka Trump.

Indian Creek Village has about 40 homes on the island, and luxe living is the theme.

This Aug. 23, 2021, video by Lifestyle Production Group of 37 Indian Creek Island Road, Indian Creek Village, shows a 53,000-square-foot home developed by Todd Michael Glaser. It was on the market for $55 million.

This Dec. 10, 2020, video of 29 Indian Creek Island Road, Indian Creek Village, shows a "classic regency-style home featured mid-century modern interiors with more than 53,000 square feet of property, manicured grounds, 145 feet of water frontage and southeast exposure," according to Lifestyle Production Group.

This May 13, 2022, photo posted by ProfileMiami on Instagram shows a gorgeous waterfront home , 37 Indian Creek Island Road, Indian Village, for $59 million: "The tropical modern playhouse being developed by Todd Michael Glaser and features architecture and interiors by Kobi Karp." Stats of the construction spec mansion, according to the ProfileMiami post? Nearly 16,000 square feet of living space with 12 bedrooms and 13.5 bathrooms on a 53,696-square-foot lot (1.25 acres). "The main level will feature 12-foot ceilings, a club room, chef and prep kitchens, a media room and a gym studio. The backyard offers tropical modern vibes with lush landscaping, 134 feet of water frontage with dockage for a yacht up to 110-foot yacht, a large sun deck, and an infinity pool and tanning beds perfectly placed for soaking in the sun."

The mansion was listed for $59 million by Dina Goldentayer with Douglas Elliman and "will be move-in ready within 18 months," the post states.

What is Indian Creek Village security like? What do we know about Indian Creek Village Police Department in Miami?

A video originally posted Oct. 26, 2017, gives a peek into "America's most secure community," the Indian Creek Village Police Department in Miami.

"Nothing is ever routine," Officer Jeremy Martinez says in the clip. "These are the most powerful people in the world so you're dealing with the most powerful people in the world. On the flip of that, you know, my interactions with most of the people have been pleasant."

In the 2017 video, Martinez adds: "The times I have spoken to most of the residents out here, they'repretty down to earth, which you wouldn't really typically think they are because they're mostly billionaires or multimillionaires.

"As far as crime goes on the island, we really don't have much crime on the island itself," he said.

Martinez jokes that a newspaper article once labeled the police department as "butlers with badges."

But policing the area is anything but simple. Policework and its obvious dangers are magnified for their marine officers. The video below gives a glimpse into patrolling Billionaire Bunker.

Some quick hits about Billionaire Bunker, according to the Indian Creek Village Police Department video and its website:

• Including the police chief, there are 11 police officers on the force , and four "police service aides."
• The Indian Creek Village Police Department is not on the main island, but its department is on the road that leads to Billionaire Bunker.
• One of the most unique parts about the island, it's one of the highest in Miami-Dade as far as sea level.
• It started as a trailer on a piece of dirt, "now we patrol some of the wealthiest people in the world, a private community," an Indian Creek Village police officer says in the video. "(It's) a perimeter zone. If anyone breaks the zone, we know where they came in, where they infiltrated the island.
• "It's a pretty big island when it comes to size wise, but you'd never think just looking at it," the officer says.
• There's one roadway in and out.
• The Indian Creek Village Police Department patrols by boat, air and on foot. The police force works with the Coast Guard for search-and-rescue missions or when a boat capsizes.

'Munchies' boats spotted around Indian Creek Village, Florida

On May 27, 2023, David Chen went out on a "curiosity paddle" from nearby Oleta River State Park and posted his kayaking adventure on Facebook. His photos and video clips give an exclusive view to one of the world's most famous neighborhoods. He "paddled by Beer Can Island (Sandspur Island) and Kayaking Cove island before crossing the very busy boat channel to Indian Creek," he said in his post.

"The security appears to be tight around the island," Chen said on his social post. "As I paddled around it, a police boat came cruising past twice."

Chen wrote in his Facebook post that the island is less than a half square mile in size and contains 38 plots, of which 31 have been developed. A photo gallery higher up in this story shows 17 homes in Indian Creek Village.

This video posted by Chen in late May 2023 shows a kayaker with a "Munchies Delivery" sign that will deliver food to your boat if you're kayaking around the island.

You've heard of food trucks, right?

In this May 27, 2023, video by Chen , the kayaker shows there were food boats in the waters near Billionaire Bunker. One sold tacos, hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream and cold sodas.

Palm Beach International Boat Show returns to West Palm Beach waterfront

The Palm Beach International Boat Show returns this week with more nearly 1,000 vessels on display, including super yachts from around the world.

Tickets are on sale now for the show that runs March 21-24 along the West Palm Beach waterfront.

The show, which started in 1982, has grown to a major economic engine for the community, with last year's impact estimated at $1.05 billion statewide — nearly as much as the $1.3 billion Miami International Boat Show, said Alyssa Freeman, executive director of the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County, which owns the boat show.

"Palm Beach is really not that far behind Miami, and Miami is the biggest in the world," Freeman said. "That was really exciting."

This year's boat show features an expanded Super Yacht Show at Palm Harbor Marina, showcasing yachts that typically stretch longer than 80 feet and have a variety of luxurious amenities that include hot tubs, crew quarters, dance floors and sun decks.

"We have more super yachts there than we ever have before, and they're even bigger," Freeman said, noting that at 236 feet, the vessel Casino Royale takes the title of largest yacht at this year's show. The title of "most expensive yacht" goes to Come Together, a 196-foot vessel priced at $59.95 million.

"Everybody, when they think about super yachts, they think about Monaco and Miami, but Palm Beach is a real player in these boat shows and the yachting world," Freeman said.

Exhibitors continue to be drawn to the Palm Beach International Boat Show by the opportunity for high sales year after year when compared with other South Florida boat shows, she said.

"I've heard from several of them, this is their favorite show to attend," Freeman said, "And that's why, because their sales are higher at Palm Beach."

The show continues to make headway in improving its sustainability efforts, she said. After reducing single-use plastics, a major change this year is the addition of water bottle refilling stations throughout the show, Freeman said.

"I think that's exciting because everybody's talking about sustainability and how we can be more sustainable," she said. "Every year, we take little steps to be more sustainable."

Freeman said she is excited for this year's AquaZone presented by Nautical Ventures. The attraction showcases some of the "yacht toys" that are new or popular on the market.

"It's so cool, because there are people actually in the water demoing yacht toys, and it's usually the latest and greatest," she said. "There's always something new every year that we've never seen before."

The Palm Beach International Boat Show also features a range of seminars, demonstrations and discussions throughout the weekend, including mental health in yachting, tips to boat to the Bahamas, safe boating to protect sea turtles and how to address active threats and piracy.

Freeman, who has children, said she loves the Kids Fishing Clinics scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with captain Don Dingman.

"Captain Don has been doing this for years, and he does a fantastic job," Freeman said. "The kids actually get to go home with a free rod and reel once the clinic is over."

The association produces the Palm Beach International Boat Show with Informa Markets' U.S. Boat Shows division.

"As we gear up for the 2024 Palm Beach International Boat Show, we are excited for our return to Downtown West Palm Beach to celebrate the rich history of this esteemed event," Andrew Doole, president of U.S. Boat Shows at Informa Markets, said in a news release. "Each year, we’re grateful for the warm welcome and support from the community, which truly makes this event a highlight on the calendar for both residents and visitors alike."

Informa also produces the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show happening March 21-24, at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. A Windward VIP ticket to the boat show includes admission to the art show as well.

In addition to serving as a cornerstone festival of spring in West Palm Beach, the boat show launched the Palm Beach International Boat Show Gives Back program to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions to local nonprofits, Freeman said.

The grant program had a soft launch last year and formalized the boat show's four-decade practice of giving back to the community, Freeman said.

"We're really excited about it," said Freeman, who added that the boat show team is working with the Community Foundation to manage the grant program, which they hope to grow. "That's something that's a super high priority for us."

Money raised through a portion of the boat show's ticket sales, optional add-ons and some related activities goes toward the fund.

The boat show in February announced that the first round of grants totaling $500,000 would go to 25 nonprofits that have marine-related programs or projects, including Florida Fishing Academy, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, Florida Atlantic University, Inlet Grove High School, Palm Beach State College, Sea Turtle Adventures and Friends of Manatee Lagoon.

"We're hoping one day we'll be able to say that it's a million dollars," she said. "So fingers crossed. It relies on the success of the boat show and the support of the community. With that, we will continue to grow."

Partially affected: Several Cornell Lab projects will remain up but services that require a login will be unavailable:

• Bird Academy login and store will be unavailable. Users will be able to access most course materials if they were logged in to the site before the outage. Snap ID quizzes will not function during the outage.
• NestWatch and Project FeederWatch login and data entry will be unavailable both on the website and the app. Please record your data on paper and enter it after the outage ends.
• eBird Mobile app : The Explore and My eBird functions will not work during the outage. You can use the app to create checklists and then submit them after the outage ends. Your eBird data will be safe.
• Merlin Bird ID app : Sound ID will continue to work, as well as Photo ID, Step-by-Step, and Explore, using your recent locations only. You will not be able to save sightings, refresh your life list, update your location, or log in to your account. These functions will return when the outage ends and your data will be safe.

Unaffected: The following sites will continue to function as normal:

What Can I Do During the Outage?

Go out birding.

• If you already have Merlin Bird ID app installed, you can still use it for some purposes. Though you won’t be able to update your location, save sightings, or refresh your life list, the ID functions will still work with your saved locations, and you can still browse species using Explore Birds
• If you already have the eBird Mobile app installed on your device, you can start eBird Mobile checklists during the downtime and submit them once eBird is back online. Learn how to Enter Sightings with eBird Mobile
