Repetition is the bread and butter of any enjoyable metroidvania but, as I trudge my way through the seemingly endless maze of Ghost Song's samey underground corridors in search of the next story beat, it's hard not to wonder where things went wrong. First impressions are deceptively strong, thanks in no small part to an alluring hand-drawn art style, though as you begin to get to grips with its clunky combat and confusing level design the frustrating limitations of its mechanics come to the fore.

You play as the Deadsuit, a robotic entity who wakes from an ancient slumber on the desolate planet of Lorian. Your true name and origin are shrouded in mystery, so the first order of business is exploring this unfamiliar environment as you set out on the search for answers. The eerie and oppressive atmosphere that shapes the planet's surface is immediately enthralling. Everything is bathed in a sinister, supernatural glow, and the beautiful background art is littered with the remains of countless crashed spacecraft in a manner that evokes a pressing sense of isolation and decay. As you venture underground, this art direction remains a consistent highlight and the Metroid roots are clearly visible in the Deadsuit's intriguing design—which accommodates a faceless visor and a familiar arm-mounted plasma cannon.

It's only as you begin to encounter Lorian's army of mutated inhabitants that the first of many major oversights becomes painfully apparent. An awkward keyboard control scheme makes the Deadsuit a far more cumbersome hero than any of Nintendo's protagonists and, while the unwieldy bindings can mercifully be tweaked from the options menu, a baffling lack of mouse support means that your aiming is significantly hampered while playing with a keyboard. It is simply impossible to aim at certain angles using the arrow keys and, while this can be swiftly remedied through the use of a compatible controller, this limitation renders several of the later sections that are dominated by fast-flying enemies almost impossible to complete.

It's only as you begin to encounter Lorian's army of mutated inhabitants that the first of many major oversights becomes painfully apparent.

Even with a controller in hand, traversal feels sluggish thanks to a slow maximum walking speed and an inexplicably floaty jump. As you would expect from the genre, further movement options are gradually unlocked as you progress, including a much-needed double jump and the ability to sprint, but it's hard to ignore the frankly unpleasant degree of imprecision that pervades most attempts at platforming throughout your journey. The combat suffers from a similar degree of sloppiness, where bizarre hitboxes had me dying as the result of enemies hitting through solid surfaces on at least a dozen occasions.

Then there's the truly diabolical dodge which is incredibly hard to judge by eye and generally sends you clipping forward into the clutches of larger enemies for a near-instantaneous death. It is perhaps one of the least effective evasive manoeuvres ever implemented, The visible meter measuring the brief period of invincibility accompanying every few dodges is a positive addition, however, providing an intuitive alternative to more opaque invincibility frames characteristic of other Souls-likes, but there were plenty of occasions where it simply failed to correlate with the damage I was receiving.

These issues are most apparent in the boss fights, where a gauntlet of repetitive encounters filled with oversized hitboxes and inconsistent attack patterns push the combat system to its absolute limit. They seem more like a test of patience than skill, a sentiment only reinforced by the poor placement of save points, forcing you to waste time dragging yourself back to the fight after an unfair death.

There is still a glimmer of hope in Ghost Song's foundations, however, and one mechanic which sees your projectile weapon overheat with prolonged use while buffing melee damage leads to a pleasant rhythm of chipping away at a weaker enemy's health before landing a satisfying killing punch. The upgrade system is similarly enjoyable, presenting a varied selection of new suit and blaster enhancements, or modules, to discover. Each is delightfully unique, and highlights include launching a barrage of friendly slimes towards your adversaries and the far more practical ability to see enemy health bars. Every slain foe also rewards a burst of nanocells, a currency which can then be spent on additional stat upgrades at statues—hulking fallen robots situated near a small number of save points.

On the standard difficulty, death not only causes you to drop your current collection of nanocells but also depletes your overall health pool. This can only be restored by spending yet more nanocells at a statue, creating something of a catch-22. The only time you need to repair the Deadsuit is right after you have died and lost all of your cells, a time when your newly diminished health bar makes it considerably more difficult to reach a statue. The amount required for repair is thankfully very low, but the fact that statues are so few and far between means they often require a substantial detour to reach. It's an entirely unnecessary chore that seems to serve little purpose beyond wasting your time.

The frustration is only further compounded by the basic map design. You'll spend the entirety of the game in a single dungeon, and even with several of the late-game traversal options unlocked your options for exploration remain disappointingly linear. With the number of interconnected zones kept to a minimum, there are a few substantial shortcuts overall and the vast majority of the roughly ten hours required to complete the story is spent backtracking through familiar territory. It's immensely wearing and although a few interesting sights stand out from the crowd (a number of the more eerie and abstract locations later on immediately come to mind) the underground locale is also home to an upsetting number of near-identical dimly lit corridors.

At a time when there are new metroidvanias appearing constantly, and classics like Dead Cells keep spitting out intriguing updates, Ghost Song has very little to offer. Just let Deadsuit stay dead.

Ghost Song — How to complete Gili’s sidequest and get the gun

When you return to the start of the game in Ghost Song , you’ll meet a woman named Gili and trigger the start of a sidequest. Doing this will give you a memorable story, a powerful enemy to fight, and a gun. The gun is probably the strongest vigor weapon in the game and uses both stamina and energy, so it’s definitely something you’ll want in your arsenal.

How to complete Gili’s sidequest and get the gun in Ghost Song

I’m going to break down where and when you’ll find Gili. There’s a crashed ship right near where you started the game and that’s where she’ll initially show up.

Now, Gili won’t be there at first. You’ll need to return to this section once you’ve gotten the double jump. To the left of where you’ll meet her is a robot that will give you a module, but you can’t talk to him until she’s gone, so make note of that. After you return a ship part and make it to the next day, Gili will be in a new location here.

After you return another ship part, she’ll move to the cave system in the mountain.

You know the drill here. Return one more ship part and then Gili will show up here.

Now, you can go and find a new enemy to face at this spot.

Initially, he’ll be reluctant to fight you. But just stick around and press up on the D-pad until you’ve exhausted all of his dialogue. He’ll eventually attack you. Beat him and then return to Gili at her last spot to see the end of this storyline and receive the gun. Learning all about Gili in Ghost Song is certainly one of the game’s more involved plots, so it’s a very good idea to try and do it, even if you just want the gun. And you  should  want that gun.

Enable highlight character mode, don't go left, save, save, save, upgrade and level up whenever possible, always collect your lost nanogel, break everything, kill the small fry, let the purple light be your guide, avoid the lower levels.

Ghost Song is a tough-as-nails Metroidvania indie that draws blood from the same vein as Dark Souls, thanks to an unforgiving combat system that gives you next to no room for error. And it's due to these complexities that learning how to actually beat the game comes with its fair share of hurdles.

It comes as no surprise, seeing a game that takes its inspiration from games like Metroid and Castlevania incorporate a ludicrously intense and downright relentless combat system. Having said that, onboarding just a few essential tips can definitely help to alleviate the frustration that comes with the slew of unavoidable losses.

Even during the brightest moments, Ghost Song can still be awfully opaque and hard to navigate. The good news is, you can actually enable Highlight Character , which essentially puts a glowing aura around your protagonist. Doing this will help you uncover hidden areas, as well as give you a clearer idea of the world you're exploring. So, if you're having trouble adapting to the darkness, be sure to head into your Game Settings , and hit Highlight Character .

Of course, there's always the option to boost the brightness in the game, too. If you're still struggling to wrap your head around what's what and who's who, then go ahead and give the Brightness slider a nudge to the right.

Once you begin your journey down in the neon metropolis, you will be presented with two directions to travel in. For the sake of keeping your head on your shoulders and learning the basic controls, you're going to want to head right .

If you take the left, then you will eventually bump into an overpowered enemy that can whittle down your health in a matter of blows. Therefore, before you summon any amount of bravery to help unearth the unknown, be sure to explore the path to the right to get a feel for the basics . Once you have discovered your first Save Point and upgrade station, you should have enough experience to be able to tackle the alternate path.

In Ghost Song, dying on a regular basis comes with the territory. In fact, nearly everything can kill you , which means you're bound to face death a handful of times over the course of your journey. And if you do happen to meet a bitter end at the hand of an enemy, then you'll have to start back from the beginning, or at the last save point.

The problem is, save points aren't all that common , which means you should always take the opportunity to back up your game whenever you stumble upon one. A Save Point looks like a blue neon leaf , and can be found in random locations, usually near upgrade stations .

The more you explore the world that Ghost Song has to offer, the more likely you are to bump in upgrade stations , which are also referred to as Statues . At these Statues, you will be able to do one of three things: Level Up , Fast Travel , or Make Repairs . Keeping on top of your level and upgrading your three attributes is crucial , and should be done whenever you acquire enough NanoGel .

The three attributes you have are Vigor , Resolve , and GunPower . To make a dent in the story, you're going to need to distribute your collected NanoGel to each of these in a sensible order, which will, in turn, make you more powerful.

• Vigor : Increases your HP, Vigor, and Power Capacity
• Resolve : Increases your HP, Energy, Stamina, Resolve, and Power Capacity
• GunPower : Increases your GunPower, and Power Capacity

Much like its Metroidvania cousins, Ghost Song employs a gameplay feature that makes death far more of a taxing experience than it needs to be. Dying, unfortunately, means losing all of your collected NanoGel , as well as a floating corpse in the destination that you perished in during the previous run. To reclaim what is rightfully yours, you will need to return to where you died and pick it up.

If it isn't too much of a trek, you should always aim to reclaim your old resources, as NanoGel can be hard to come by in certain locations . Recovering your lost NanoGel will also give you a second opportunity to defeat the enemy that bested you the first time around. Beating it will net you additional NanoGel and yet another soul for your archive.

It may not look like it, what with most of the world being shrouded in darkness, but a lot of areas can actually be destroyed with a well-placed bullet or two . To give you an idea of the sorts of items and terrains that can be destroyed, you should keep an eye out for tattered blocks or walls that appear to be crumbling.

To help get a clearer picture of the terrain you're currently exploring, enable the Highlight Character slider in the Game Settings. If all else fails, then enter the manual aiming mode and fire in all four directions . Chances are, something nearby will explode and open up a new route for you to explore.

Ghost Song isn't exactly short on deadly little insects for you to obliterate, which means there's also no reason for you to glide over them without obtaining their sacred fruits. And when we say sacred fruits, we're talking about NanoGel , the very valuable substance that will save your skin whenever trouble comes to pass.

The good news is, everyone and everything in Ghost Song has a little NanoGel to spare , which means you can take it for yourself by killing whatever crosses your path. Once you've accumulated enough of the substance, you can use it to upgrade your attributes and repair your broken armor . You will need to harvest as much NanoGel as possible during your time in the underworld, as a lack of it will lead to huge problems later down the line.

Metroidvania games certainly have a way with making you feel isolated and without any form of guidance. Unfortunately, Ghost Song is no different, as it also drops you into an open world that bears little to no helping hands to nudge you in the right direction whatsoever.

The upside to this, though, is that there are purple lights scattered throughout the world that reveal new areas. If you happen to see one, then you can rest assured that you're probably on the right track. If you're at a loose end, then l et the violet beacons be your guide . Chances are, following a series of purple beacons will lead you to your next objective, or perhaps even to a hidden location with more resources to harvest.

It's simple, really: the lower the biome, the tougher the enemy . So, if you want to be able to stand a chance when making your gradual descent, it's definitely worth upgrading your attributes to at least Level 7 or 8 before going any further. Once you have leveled up your Vigor, Resolve, and GunPower to a respectable level, you should have enough tools to be able to tackle the deadlier foes that aimlessly wander in the bottomless abyss.

Of course, tough enemies can be found in just about every corner of Ghost Song's world, but you will come to discover that the one-hit wonders do tend to submerge a little deeper than most bog-standard creatures. Therefore, before you go potting around in the darker depths, make sure you're fully equipped to tackle what idles ahead .

Ghost Song: Leveling Up, Gear, and Abilities

We’ve been enjoying Ghost Song since it was released. The Metroidvania-style side scroller has been a solid experience so far, and we’re sure that will continue. The game can be punishing, so we’re offering this  Ghost Song walkthrough on leveling, gear, abilities, and more .

Leveling Up

Players can level up their Deadsuit at statues with the NanoGel from defeating enemies. The first is found in the  Norberg Laboratory  near the starting area. Each level-up can improve one of the primary stats: 

• GunPower : The offensive stat. It ups the damage of guns, including the Blaster and explosive weaponry.
• Vigor : The defensive stat. It increases maximum HP and physical damage.
• Resolve : The utility stat. It increases HP, Energy, and Stamina by a small amount and has other odd effects.

There are some other uses for NanoGel, including repairing lasting damage and buying items, but leveling up should be a priority. Later, enemies deal too much damage and have too much health not to take advantage of this system.

Gear and Modules

Ghost Song offers 3 equipable item groups for the Deadsuit: 

Blaster Modules

Suit modules.

• Special Weapons

Modules are limited by Deadsuit Power, and only 1 Special Weapon can be equipped at a time.

Blaster Modules in Ghost Song offer alternate fire modes for the Blaster. Some, like the  Cloudburst Rifle , merely offer more raw damage, while others, like the Plasma Burner (From Leggett: The Deserter), have different effects, like setting enemies on fire. Some Blaster Modules also boost the primary stats, so it can be worth equipping them even if you don’t intend to use that specific fire mode.

Suit Modules in Ghost Song provide more passive effects. These are good for gearing the Deadsuit for a certain playstyle. For example, the HeatHawk module (from Lupoto) reduces heat build-up on the Blaster. This means players can attack from a distance for longer and play safer. The trade-off is it’s harder to get the bonus damage on melee attacks from an overheated barrel. Unlike Primary Stats, Modules are easy to swap out, so try a new combination if you’re struggling.

Special Weapons replace the Deadsuit’s melee attack. So far, we’ve found the following: 

• Magma Spear : From Roslock Drift Beta. Has better reach.
• Hazard Blade: F rom the Junkpit. It sweeps a wide area.
• Hulking Fist : From the Junkpit. It deals massive damage and comes with a spinning jump attack. 
• Blast Shield : Purchasable from the Crash Site. Blocks, instead of dealing damage. It breaks temporarily if overused.

Melee attacks are an important part of the game as they deal great damage (even before the overheat bonus) and stagger many enemies, including bosses. Find the one that suits you best and land some good hits.

As a Metroidvania game, Ghost Song gradually gives players additional abilities to reach new parts of the map. These also help in combat. The Phase Dash (obtained from Norberg Laboratory) lets players reach ledges they couldn’t before but also grants invincibility frames during use. 

Players can avoid big attacks from enemies or even bosses by just dashing through them. Even when the protection is on cooldown, players can chain up to 2 additional dashes to get out of dangerous situations. This is the first movement Ability players will unlock, but there’s plenty more to find, and they all have combat uses.

Ghost exploit the music of the church to create a weapon against itself. By utilizing the dynamics of religious hymns, Ghost inject their Satanism not with the point of a needle, but with the secrecy of a mosquito. A scourge in the guise of sanctity, Ghost have compiled the strongest metal discography of the 2010s, and we’ve gone through each original track to rank the best of the beast.

Ghost have never made the same album twice, creating an “apples and oranges” situation. Comparing the raw occult power of “Con Clavi Con Dio” to the flamboyant “Pro Memoria” is a twisted task we challenged ourselves to complete, so with 37 total songs to deconstruct, let’s walk the left-hand path from least to most glorious.
