Furthermore, there are performance upgrades possible as for example different race orientated sails like North Sails 3Di sails and a carbon mast. Please contact us to explore all the possibilities.

High-performing and as open to the sea as it is to life, the Oceanis 38 boasts new space organization options on board. Evolving to match your requirements whenever you want, she offers a new approach to cruising. She has something for everyone, but is also unique !
Naval designer : Finot - Conq
Interior designer : Nauta Design
Length and beam on the waterline have been extended as far as possible to make the Oceanis 38 quick to cut through the water, while increasing stability. She offers high-performance and habitability second to none on this size of cruiser.
Almost everything is possible inside the Oceanis 38. There is wide scope for different combinations in organizing the interior spaces and woodwork ambiances. The choice of a separate shower compartment is popular in the three cabin version. A unique feature on this size of cruiser, the fore cabin’s bed head faces in the same direction as the boat.
The Oceanis 38 rethinks the use of the boat, leaving the choice of its initial layout to the owner, while maintaining the potential to change arrangements at a later date. With the Daysailer, Weekender or Cruise, there are three ways to reorganize life on board the same boat.
Designed like a floating loft, this version of the Oceanis 38 does away with interior bulkheads in favour of a single room. The view is unobstructed and there is a stunning feeling of space. With equipment focussing on the essential, aft space for storage and an open cockpit, the Daysailer is open to everything.
Whether she has a two or three cabin plan, the Weekender version of the Oceanis 38 offers the greatest evolving potential over time and is the yacht that offers the greatest choice of layout: open or closed cabins, separate shower, fitted galley, extra inside/outside table, helmsman's seats, etc.
More conventional, the Cruiser version of the Oceanis 38 is equipped with a large galley facing the saloon and a bathroom with separate shower. It offers a choice between two or three fitted cabins. With the potential to evolve, the bulkhead can be removed from the fore cabin of this version to return that loft feeling.

Hans Christian 38 Traditional is a 37 ′ 11 ″ / 11.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Harwood Ives and built by Shing Fa Boatbuilding Co., Ltd. and Hans Christian Yachts between 1976 and 1989.
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
From BlueWaterBoats.org :
Built like a tank and laden with teak, the Hans Christian 38 Traditional (sometimes known as the 38T) is a heavy displacement double-ender that oozes the classic feel of a bygone age. Like many American cruisers from 1970/80s it traces its origins back to the work of Colin Archer, who in turn inspired William Aitkin with Thistle and Eric from which rose Crealock’s famous Westsail 32 , the boat that not only “launched a thousand dreams” but a boatbuilding boom eager to quench the demand for the salty Scandinavian double-ended styling.
The timing was perfect for Hans Christian Yachts which was founded in Long Beach, California by John Edwards, a school teacher described as a dreamer and an eccentric. He was one of the very first of a wave of American entrepreneurs to utilize the cheap yet skillful boatbuilding industry in Taiwan. Interestingly he was the first to approach the now famous Bob Perry to design a production yacht, the CT54. It led onto the Hans Christian 34 Traditional which set the design direction for the Hans Christian line for over two decades. However the company’s ties to Perry did not last and by 1974 Hans Christian Yachts was using Harwood Ives. The 38T introduced in 1976, became the third Hans Christian boat from Ives.
Like other siblings of that era (the 43, 36 and 33) the 38T is beautiful visually and incredibly seaworthy with many circumnavigations under her belt. They have many fans, owners love their liveaboard comfort and “cadillac ride”, yet pundits will be quick to point out their mediocre “heavy displacement” boat speed.
Above the waterline, the styling is classic Hans Christian; a long bowsprit, a springy sheerline, and rounded canoe stern with large dollops of teak all over. Below the waterline you’ll find a hull with very rounded sections, a full keel with a forefoot cutaway and a big “barn door” rudder.
As you can imagine, they are solid boats overbuilt to cruise in safety and comfort. Practical Sailor Magazine in their 1999 review recalled one US Coastguard who made a mid-winter passage from Annapolis while the boat was ice-bound.
“ He described using a standard ice-breaking technique of moving ahead, riding up on the ice and letting the weight of the boat crush through a path. During a haulout he discovered the only damage to be a small worn area of bottom paint “
Underway at over 30,000 lbs in typical cruising trim, she’s definitely no lightweight, and light air performance suffers despite carrying a generous amount of sail area. Ignoring the later variations on the boat, the standard 38T doesn’t point very high, owners comment around 40 degrees of apparent wind is about the best. With 10-15 knots she can make around 6 knots to weather and about 7 knots off the wind. The first reef is usually taken in in around 15-18 knots and as the winds pick up there is a tendency for weather helm. Of course in heavy airs and seas, the Hans Christian 38T comes into her own, she’s both seakindly and dry with no bobbing or banging around in the rough stuff.
The variations on the 38T are as mysterious as the sea itself. We shall venture into these realms with the help of Craig Beckwith, once VP of Sales for Hans Christian, he oversaw production in Taiwan. Still devoted to these boats to this present day he holds the entire encyclopedia of Hans Christian in his head.
The original 38T was optioned as a cutter or ketch, the cutter proved by far the most popular. Interior layouts came in two flavors, a pullman berth or a v-berth in the forepeak. Not long after the boat’s introduction a “MkII Interior” was offered, where the pullman berth moved further aft and the head relocated to the forepeak. On these boats the main bulkhead was moved aft to make more room for the pullman berth.
Around 1977, the 38T inspired an all new boat, somewhat confusingly named the Hans Christian 38 MkII . This sibling, also designed by Ives, had flatter bottom sections with beam carried further forward and aft, a taller rig with more sail and an interior layout similar to the 38T “MkII Interior”, except the galley sink was placed on an island bench. You can quickly identify these by looking for a truncated teak coaming at the very stern of the boat (unique to only the MkII and the Hans Christian 33 Traditional). Hauling out, you’ll also see the placement of the rudder is further aft. The taller “MkII rig” from this boat was offered as an option on the 38T, but really the rig was overpowered for the 38T, that is until the next chapter, when the Telstar Keel was introduced.
In 1984 one of the two 38T production molds went in for surgery in search for better performance. The keel’s leading edge was moved aft, a large bite was taken from the trailing edge, and was complemented with a redesigned skeg-mounted rudder. The revised boat was dubbed the “Telstar” Hans Christian 38 Traditional. Beckwith tells us, the Telstar Keel was a considerable improvement, it pointed higher and particularly improved light wind performance.
“ Design input came from Scott Sprague, but really the area to cut the keel was figured by John Edwards, the founder of Hans Christian. There was a bit of trembling when the first sea trial was conducted in Taiwan. Nobody really knew what to expect. But lo and behold, the boat sailed like a dream. The helm was light as a feather when compared to the older 38 Traditional which really sailed more on her head sails. We also increased the lead of the mast by moving the spar 12 inches forward, thus reducing the weather helm vastly. ” – Craig Beckwith
The Telstar 38T came with the taller “MkII rig” as standard equipment. However the “MkII interior” was no longer an option for the Telstar 38T as the new position of the compression post (12 inches further forward) obstructed the would-be berth entrance. This was also true of the handful of 38T boats optioned with this “MkII rig”.
In all Beckwith estimates 167 Hans Christian 38 Traditionals were built, this includes 30 Telstars, in a production run that outnumbered Hans Christian 38 MkII (87 built). Both boats ceased production at the same time around 1989 when a recession and a luxury tax hit the boat industry with both barrels. By then the builder, Shin Fa Industries, was on the way out of business and Hans Christian Yachts was in the process of migrating their operations to Thailand. The last boat built was a Telstar 38T sold by Beckwith in the San Diego boat show in 1989 and the molds were destroyed shortly thereafter.
As with most older boats some standard things to check are:
Electrical problems are probably the weakest link in most Taiwanese built boats of the 1970-80s era. Some earlier boats used automotive grade wiring more suspectible to corrosion and wiring looms were often hard to access buried under teak battens and ceiling liners making repairs expensive.
As of 2010, the asking price of the 38T is in the range of $60k-170k USD depending on age and condition. Prospective buyers are recommended to contact the Hans Christian Owners Association who have an online forum for advice and further information.

I've never seen a boat with so much bronze jewelry. not even on another Hans. I can imagine what those winches alone much have cost when they were installed. As you probably know self-tailing winches are already ridiculously expensive but to have them in bronze is quite the unicorn. It has three stock 7.4 liter Mercruiser V8’s that generate 1000 HP. The entire boat has just been serviced, sorted and freshened including the engines and risers. We can refer you to the technician who has taken great care of this very fast ocean going vessel. The custom paint job was in the neighborhood of $30,000.00. Just the hull alone was $225,000.00 before the custom paint and engines and out drives. This is number 3 out of 100 made. The Navy Seals, Homeland Security and the Coast Guard all use this hull because of it’s strength and stability especially in rough seas. It has a 9 foot 6 inch beam and holds 400 gallons of fuel. The three outdrives are Bravo Ones in perfect condition with the Stainless Steel Props. The boat also has A/C, new canvas, new upholstery, new carpeting and a V-birth to sleep and/or relax in. This is one serious rough water boat that slices through 6 foot waves with ease, only has approximately 200 hours and travels up to 80 MPH

The boat is for sale locally as well and I reserve the right to end the listing at any time. Up for Auction is a very rare find no less in this kind of condition. The Bertram 38 is one of the best sport fish hull designs ever made. The Cadillac of fishing machines. This boat has been cared for its entire life and it shows. It has been re-fit and updated in almost every possible way over the last 10 years. From engines to exhaust tips, wiring, lighting, outlets, gauges, paint, cabinetry, ceilings, carpet, bedding, The Tower, the list could go on and on and on. A small fortune and many many hours have been spent upgrading this boat in almost every possible way. Pretty much the only thing left from 1965 is a bullet proof hull with the structural integrity of a Sherman tank that rides like a Cadillac in almost any sea condition. Structural integrity –The structural integrity of this boat is beyond comprehension and description in words. The one piece hull is made up of layer upon layer of hand laid heavy thick fiberglass and resin and is probably 3 times stronger than anything you can find today and twice as thick as any hull that has been made in the last 30 years. Looking inside the hull you see results of and the definition of true craftsmanship and the pride that went into building this boat. Something you could never find today at any price. The strength of this hull provides a serious extra measure of safetyin the event you encounter any floating debris like a telephone pole or tree. The keel of this boat could probably withstand a major impact that would crack the hull and sink most other boats. If you properly installed a sharp angled piece of heavy steel on the forward entry point where the hull first hits the water….. you most probably could get the ABS (Amercian Bureau of Shipping) approval to change the boats rating to “ICE BREAKER” class-LOL. PLEASE SEE 3 LINKS TO 188 ADDITIONAL PICTURES OF THE BOAT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE EBAY ADVERTISEMENT Engines: Powered by economical Twin Detroit Diesel 6v53 naturals with less than 350hrs since being completely rebuilt. They start right up, run great and smoke free. If maintained properly these naturally aspirated engines can last a lifetime. Unlike their turbo counterparts they are not pushed to their limits and beat on to drain every ounce of horsepower at the expense of reliability. The tranny’s shift properly and all controls operate as they should. The running gear is corrosion free. The bronze props, stainless shafts and struts are in excellent shape and vibration free. With 420hp and 880 ft. / lbs. of torque the boat will cruise at 15-16 knots though almost any condition and max out at around 20kts. Wiring: The boat has been completely rewired to perfection using the highest grade marine wiring though out. On the 110 side from the 2 - 30 amp shore power receptacles to the 110 volt breakers, switches, outlets, lights and 30 amp battery charger and everything in between. On the 12 volt side from the battery cables to the 12 volt breaker panel, switches, gauges, pumps and everything in between was all re-done to perfection. The Tower: Constructed by a true old school craftsman and custom made for this boat, it is a work of art. Installed about 5 years ago it is in near immaculate condition. The towers design, structural integrity and how it is perfectly mounted on the boat is mind boggling. You could probably lift the boat with a helicopter with the proper lines and rigging tied to the tower-LOL. It must be seen in person to truly be appreciated. It is only rivaled by structural integrity of the boat. If you called Atlantic Towers to replicate this tower there is no doubt in my mind it would be atleast 25k-30k installed. Here is a link to a used tinker toy tower compared to this one that the are asking almost 11,500 for and if you look in the link at the spec of the pictures in the tower ad it was over a 40k factory add on when new http://www.ebay.com/itm/HATTERAS-YACHTS-53-CONVERTIBLE-12-1-2-FOOT-ALUMINUM-MARLIN-BOAT-TOWER/141131261043?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D23423%26meid%3D7714795562983720754%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D10050%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D200819663329 The Hull: From the bottom paint to from the rub rail the original gel coat is in excellent condition with barely a nick or ding anywhere and has a beautiful glossy finish. The bottom is in amazing shape. It only has a few coats of bottom paint since all the old paint was removed. Topside was recently painted, shines away and is in very nice condition. Thru- hulls: All thru-hulls have been changed and updated about 10 years ago. They are in great shape / open and close freely and are leak free. The Interior: The interior is in amazing shape. Some of the side walls and ceilings of the interior is actually original Bertram gel coat and have a glossy shine like new. The ceilings in each and every room where they are not the original gel coat were redone few years ago using high end marine fabric and trimmed with teak, they are in mint near flawless condition throughout. This year brand new heavyweight Berber carpet was installed throughout the entire boat. The V-Berth bed and 2 twin bed mattresses were also replaced this year with high end custom fit dense temper pedic type foam beds. They are so comfortable you don’t want to get out of bed in the morning. All new bedding this year and curtains were replaced as well. A few years ago brand new custom made teak cabinets were installed in the salon that hold the built in fridge, kitchen sink, microwave, 2 burner electric stove, stainless toaster oven and has plenty of additional storage as well. In the salon running the entire starboard side all new matching teak panels were also installed. Fuel System / Range: The boat is currently rigged with a 350 gallon fiberglass fuel tank that is in nice shape and leak and issue free. When the engines were rebuilt all new fuel lines were installed throughout. At a mellow cruise of about 14-15 knots your burning around 6-7 gph a side giving you a range of about 300 miles, coming home with about 20% of fuel. There is room to add up to more 3 tanks if you want to extend the range. The forward cockpit hatch which had the old antiquated generator could easily fit a 175-200 gallon tank or if you wanted to save that spot to re-install a generator you could add Saddle tanks on the outside of each engine gaining about 100-125 gal each, depending on your preference. Comforts: There is a built in 12,000 Btu A/C in the salon that cools the whole boat very nicely and also a 5000btu thru hatch portable unit for the forward cabin if you want A/C with the cabin door closed for privacy. There is a brand new hot water heater and its also equipped with a 100 gallon water tank so you have hot and cold water in the shower, bathroom and kitchen sinks. The head, holding tank and all plumbing lines and pumps in between are only a few years old and function as they should. Storage: Throughout the boat is plenty of storage. You can store 6 rods in ceiling of salon and 6 in forward cabin. The Forward cabin has 2 huge carpeted lockers, 2 dry storage areas under the V berth itself at the foot of the bed and under the bed itself. There is also an additional closet in the hall. The second cabin which contains 2 beds has a closet, a huge built in shelved storage area by the lower bunk and a built in night table with plenty of draw space as well. The bathroom has a very large 2 shelved storage area above the sink and plenty of storage below the built in sink set up as well. Lighting: Throughout the boat there is a mix of 12 volt and 110 lighting in each cabin area. All running, cabin and spreader lights operate as they should. You can spin her on a dime. This is because the chines are above the water where they won’t dig in. In high speed turns, her outside chine rises well clear of the water where it won’t catch and trip, while her longitudinal steps stop side slips. LESS ROLL – In a Beam sea, the boat is very stable because the V sections develop a strong righting action. Longitudinal steps act as bilge keels which dampen roll. The boat also sits proportionally deeper and is less disturbed by surface waves. Steers easy in following Sea –Because the Bertram has neither flat sections aft nor a sharp forefoot she performs very well steering in following seas at high or low speeds or trying to get in the inlet on a bad day. Unlike the flat aft sections of many conventional hulls that will pitch forward, yaw or even broach in bad weather. Softer ride –Due to the hull design not having an aft planning surface to jolt and jar the boat, the boat will ride more easily through rough seas and be able to cruise comfortably at considerable higher speeds than conventional boats of the same size. Drier Ride– The Bertram’s longitudinal steps throw water out low and flat where it won’t blow back aboard. I COULD GO ON AND ON FOR ANOTHER FEW PAGES BUT I WILL STOP MYSELF-LOL TERMS: $500 immediate deposit through PayPal, with the balance due by cash, personal check or wire transfer only within 7 days. Regal’s 38 SAV is not defined by what it does. It’s defined by how you customize it to suit your desires. SAV stands for sports activity vessel, meaning it can be used for many boating activities.
It has outstanding performance characteristics for cruising when equipped with triple Yamaha 300 hp outboards. Two dive doors and a swim platform for easy entry and reentry serve your inner Cousteau. The basics for fishing are already there, but the 38 SAV is ready to accept hardcore fishing equipment like Taco outriggers, downriggers and rod holders. But just as it is, the 38 SAV is a superb entertainer.
For cruisers, the 38 has a roomy deck plan centered around the command center. Four luxury bucket seats face the helm, but the two outside seats can swivel aft to face the galley on deck. At the sandbar, the center seats remain forward, and the grill master can sear burgers, brats or steaks while seated in the aft-facing bucket seat, keeping in touch with the cockpit. There is one refrigerator and space for a second fridge or freezer (standard) below the grill, with three drawers for storing cookware, tackle or whatever you want in the center. Everything needed to keep the crew fed is in place.
A 20.5-gallon livewell is in the port side of the galley, and its clear acrylic side wall allows easy monitoring of bait to ensure adequate aeration for lively action. If you’re not fishing, the baitwell would make an excellent cooler. There is also a slide-out Yeti centered under the row of four helm seats.
From the helm, choose the passage to port or starboard of the galley to enter the expansive cockpit or take the portside passage forward to the spacious bow seating.
The cockpit seating area is designed for an intimate experience with the water without being isolated from those on the bridge deck. Mezzanine seating for four or more faces aft. A three-seat transom couch folds out to complete a conversation area. That couch is flanked by port and starboard Plexiglas transom doors framed in stainless-steel tubing. The clear doors are stylish and keep toddlers inboard while allowing a view of the water passing by the outboards and transom.
Portside, the forward entry way to the bow leads to more luxury seating that surrounds the area. To starboard, there is no walkway to the bow. Instead, the area is closed off to form a dock-level boarding access with three teak-soled steps to the command deck and a broader cabin belowdecks with more headroom. With port and starboard dive doors and a transom entry, there are plenty of convenient options for climbing aboard.
Boston Whaler makes a 38-foot boat, the 380 Realm ($809,585), with a similar helm configuration. However, Boston Whaler enclosed the helm all the way to the starboard gunwale, which eliminated the deck-level entry found in the Regal. Cruisers will have a broader, more enclosed helm deck. Belowdecks, the 380 Realm has a large cabin. Whaler designed it to give all the seating to the V-berth, which makes a large dining area when not set up for overnighting or naps.
The Regal’s cabin features a double V-berth, but a central cushion inclines toward the cabin, making it a cozy couch for two. The midcabin berth sleeps two more. The head compartment is spacious, with a porcelain sink, head and large, separate walk-in shower compartment.
Certainly, the accommodations and space contribute to the 38 SAV’s luxury appeal, but Regal doesn’t scrimp on other touches, like highly polished stainless steel, ample use of teak on step treads, and posh cocktail tables.
Powered by triple Yamaha 300 hp outboards, the 38 SAV makes nearly 50 mph. The motors not only provide an exciting top speed, but they also offer ample staying power to remain comfortably on plane in the low 20s, with excellent midrange handling that only comes from a well-mated hull and propulsion system.
For all its elegance, the 38 SAV can sprint from fun spot to fun spot while keeping the crew surrounded in luxury and comfort. With the helm, the bow seating and the cockpit vying for passengers’ occupancy, each boater’s experience can be as intimate or gregarious as they choose.
The 38 SAV is designed to bring the full spectrum of boating pleasure—and so it does.
Speed, efficiency, operation.
