Ferretti 780 review: Acres of glass give this luxury yacht a window on the world

Acres of glazing and a choice of layouts ensures the new Ferretti 780 has a truly global outlook, writes Alan Harper

Say what you like about globalisation but it has certainly made yacht design more challenging. This new Italian motor yacht, unveiled at a show in France with its pan-European layout, is also available in a specific US version, as well as with numerous standard modifications designed to make it appeal to buyers in the Far East.

Ferretti is well used to the demands of international commerce of course, and had a strong presence in markets around the world even before it was bought by the Weichai Group in 2012. But Europe remains its core territory, which was plain to see at the 2017  Cannes Yachting Festival when the new Ferretti 780 made its confident debut.

A long, comfortable deck saloon with low-profile furniture, brightly illuminated by giant windows, leads forward to an enclosed galley on the starboard side and a discreet wheelhouse. This is the European version. It’s all about the relationship between the owners, their guests and the crew – the captain and chef can get on with their work in peace, leaving those who have left their work ashore to relax in privacy.

The main deck layout on the US version reflects the more democratic attitude to boating that holds sway in the New World. Over there, husband-and-wife owners think nothing of managing a yacht of this size without a skipper, and this family focus is reflected in an open-plan ‘country kitchen’ galley arrangement which also opens up the helm area. In providing long, cockpit-to-windscreen sightlines, it’s an approach which makes the best of the saloon’s generous dimensions, and has much to recommend it.

They do things differently in the Far East, meanwhile. Here, the galley is installed below, the main deck is dominated by a huge, circular dining and games table, and sleeping accommodation on the lower deck plays second fiddle to a full-beam karaoke studio. Boating in those parts sounds like a lot of fun.

All versions of the 780 share certain basic characteristics. Ferretti is not a brand that is known for its attention-seeking design features, although in its quiet way, it has been responsible for a number of innovations that have become so ubiquitous, no one can now remember who first thought them up.

Although nominally based on the earlier 750 model, the new Ferretti 780 has a completely new superstructure which features the giant main-deck windows that the shipyard did so much to popularise, along with an extended flybridge to shade the cockpit, and the foredeck seating area which has become an essential fixture of yachts this size.

A Kevlar-reinforced hardtop can be fitted as an option and the hydraulic aft platform has a 450kg lifting capacity. Two panels in the transom fold down to provide seating at the water’s edge. Good ensuite accommodation for two crew is fitted in the stern.

Having celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018, Ferretti Yachts has maintained its standards through thick and thin, and the Ferretti 780 exhibited at Cannes displayed the shipyard’s exemplary fit-out quality from engineroom to flybridge.

The interior decor comes with a choice of fabrics and finishes of course, and the European owner of this one had opted for an uber-luxury look with marble-clad bulkheads, much suede and lacquer in evidence, along with thick woollen carpets which contrasted with relatively sober walnut veneers.

Like all Ferrettis, the 780 is designed from the inside out as a spacious and comfortable home from home. The 6ft 4in (1.93m) headroom in the wheelhouse is as low as it goes, and even in the smallest guest cabin, the twin berth on the port side, the beds are a useful 6ft 3in long and 28in wide (190cmx71cm).

Layouts based on rational right-angles make the best possible use of the space available, and careful thought has been given to stowage volumes in the cabins. Careful thought has also been given to the yacht’s construction. Ferretti as a brand may stand for dependable solidity and tradition, but it still has to move with the times.

Resin infusion techniques are used for every glassfibre moulding, saving significant weight while also, in theory at least, creating better-quality laminates. The lower deck is constructed on a complex tray moulding, lending efficiencies to the boatbuilding process that translate into time and money saved – vital in a competitive global marketplace. From bucket of resin to completed yacht, a Ferretti 780 takes four months to assemble.

Installed technology is also at the cutting edge. A joint Simrad-Naviop integrated navigation and vessel-monitoring system was fitted to our test Ferretti 780, with three screens at the lower helm and two upstairs. Fly-by-wire electro-hydraulic steering marries the electronics at the helm with the hydraulics in the engineroom, which not only makes installation and maintenance simpler but also improves reliability.

It certainly works. Fitted with MAN’s dependable – almost industry-standard – 1,550hp V12s, the larger of two engine options available, our Ferretti 780 freed itself from the confines of Cannes’ Vieux Port with a joie de vivre that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago in a yacht of this size and displacement.

The main difference between engines of this generation and their forebears is not just in horsepower and its effect on top speed, but in how that power makes itself available. The tremendous torque of the 1550s translates into a truly involving driving experience in boats that ought to be as much fun to drive as buses.

From about 1,600rpm and up, the Ferretti 780 was a blast for the helmsman, with excellent acceleration and a helm response to match, heeling the big yacht into dramatic, sweeping turns which might not have actually been as tight as they seemed, but they were certainly fun.

The weight of that high hardtop definitely told in what we could find of a beam sea among the confusion of wakes in the bay – it might have high-tech reinforcement, but it’s still mainly fibreglass – as even with the Seakeeper engaged, the Ferretti 780 seemed quite willing to roll.

Charging head-on through the same waves, however, the moderate-vee hull flattened out the impacts with the solid authority of a comfortable cruising boat. There were no perceptible vibrations anywhere in the interior at any speed, and sound levels throughout were commendably low – just 66dB(A) in the master cabin at 20 knots. The Ferretti 780 felt solid.

That is what Ferretti has set out to achieve with its new flybridge yacht – a big, dependable cruising machine with the right combination of design, technology and home comforts, put together with reassuring solidity. Whichever layout you opt for, and wherever in the world you do your boating, that’s what it delivers.

Ferretti Yachts 780: The Second Coming

Singapore is home to Asia’s first two units of the restyled Ferretti Yachts 780, which features a refined exterior and exciting new interior options by IdeaeItalia that match the ‘Just Like Home’ concept introduced on the brand’s 500 and flagship 1000.

When Ferretti Group’s Cattolica shipyard on Italy’s Adriatic coast launched its first yacht of 2022, it was notable that it was a Ferretti Yachts 780. Hull number 36, no less. In fact, sales of the 24m model are already in the mid-40s, marking impressively consistent demand for a model that originally premiered at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2017.

However, continuing demand is also because the 780 has recently been enjoying a second wind as the newly restyled version launched last year features the same ‘Just Like Home’ concept introduced on the 500 and 1000, the brand’s first two models with interiors by IdeaeItalia.

In fact, two owners from Singapore were the first in Asia and among the first around the world to benefit from the restyle of the 780, which is built in Cattolica along with other 20-30m Ferretti Yachts models including the flagship 1000.

Both clients ordered their yachts though Singapore dealer Hong Seh Yachting in April 2020, when the pandemic looked like it was here to stay, and people quickly realised that weekends and holidays would be spent in their home nations for the foreseeable future.

SISTER YACHTS

The two almost-identical yachts – one hull is in ‘Custom Line white’ – are berthed at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, managed by Hong Seh Yachting and regularly used, with one owner spending three straight weeks aboard the yacht .

The Singaporean who booked hull 29 is a first-time yacht owner and last September became the first client in Asia to receive the restyled 780. The second owner was ordering his third Ferretti Yachts model and his new 780 arrived in Singapore in October, having been used for the restyled model’s world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival a month earlier.

The first owner of the new 780 was sold on the model after seeing an earlier 780 in Singapore, which had been heavily customised and features a lower deck with a large entertainment room and just two cabins.

Della Pearce, Director of Hong Seh Yachting, says: “It allowed the client to see first-hand how the 780 could be configured either with three or four cabins, and galley on the main or lower deck. These multiple configurations are unique for this category and stem from Ferretti Group’s experience of building larger yachts.

“The 780 appealed to our clients because of the yard’s flexibility to accommodate their customisations. It also helped that the model is RINA Category A, which allows her unrestricted navigation in open sea.”

Both the new 780s in Singapore feature the standard four-cabin layout and IdeaeItalia’s Contemporary mood interior, an upgrade option as opposed to the more colourful Classic, which is offered as standard.

OUTDOOR PLAY

Although much of the restyling is focused on the interior, there have been a few changes to the exterior such as an expansion of the main glazed surfaces in the hull, which gives the yacht a sportier look.

The fun starts at the swim platform, which can accommodate a tender up to 4.35m. The two panels can fold down separately or together to create a large waterside sofa, while the whole area can be covered by a bimini. To the side of each stairway are storage lockers that provide enough space to store a Seabob.

Side gates provide access to a cockpit with a forward-facing sofa and a table. Symmetrical side decks lead to a large and cleverly designed foredeck, where a C-shaped sofa faces an adjustable table and seating at the aft end of a huge triple sunpad. As at the other end of the boat, a bimini can cover the area.

The flybridge, reached by starboard stairs from the cockpit, is one of the yacht’s main attractions and remains a winning design. Both owners in Singapore have chosen a black hard top with a fixed plexiglass insert, while options include a panel system that can open.

For the restyled 780, the flybridge includes a larger central bar, which is situated to starboard and has the option of bar stools.

Opposite is the main social area, a C-shaped sofa and table, while the option for an extended sofa and dining table has been taken by one of the Singaporean owners. All exterior furnishings are from the Roda collection exclusively customised for Ferretti Yachts.

Forward of the bar is a flexible sunpad with moveable headrests that can convert into two facing sofas by removing the central pad, while to port is the helm station featuring two Poltrona Frau chairs.

The aft end is surrounded by clear railings and can fit a large modular sunpad or be left clear to fit sun loungers, the latter chosen for the two units in Singapore.

CONTEMPORARY MOOD

It’s the interior by IdeaeItalia that really brings the 780 in line with the newest generation of Ferretti Yachts models exemplified by the 500 and 1000, which also offer either Classic or Contemporary moods.

Classic’s warmer, more traditional colours are inspired by the island of Ischia in the Gulf of Naples, while Contemporary offers a more urban, modern look with cooler colourways inspired by Taormina in Sicily.

The main-deck interior features a long clear path on the port side all the way through to the raised pilot house, which makes for a nice sight line. The ceiling is clad in fine fabric and accommodates the new lighting design, with adjustable round spotlights plus three light cylinders in the dining area. Other new features include mirrored steel surfaces, electric window blinds and a hidden sound system.

The saloon starts with a large L-shaped sofa to starboard and a coffee table, while to port is a huge 65-inch TV, which has the option of a wine storage cabinet next to it. Forward is the dining area, which has a dining table for eight to starboard and a long sideboard to port.

The galley, also to starboard, is available in various configurations. The standard version has a fixed glass partition, while options include a closed version or a sliding glass partition that reveals a bar counter. North American clients can order a completely open version.

Inside, the galley features the hobs, oven and main storage areas forward, while aft is a large fridge freezer and a prep/serving area facing the dining table. The galley also benefits from multiple side windows including a small one that opens. A second layout option includes a day head just before the entrance to a galley with a different configuration.

In both layouts, the galley and other forward areas can be sealed off by a mirrored door that slides across from in front of the port door to the side deck. From the hallway, it’s three steps up to the raised pilothouse, which has a comfortable dinette to port and the main helm station to starboard, featuring two gorgeous Poltrona Frau chairs and three Simrad screens.

Technology includes the electro-hydraulic steer-by-wire system developed in partnership with Xenta and the integrated Loop system from Naviop-Simrad, which controls the main propulsion, navigation, monitoring and home automation functions.

LOWER-DECK OPTIONS

The steps to the lower deck are opposite the galley and lead down to a hallway that starts aft with the entrance to the full-beam master suite, dominated by a large bed facing a mirrored TV.

On the port side is a comfortable sofa and the beautifully finished bathroom, which has twin sinks with Silk Georgette marble tops, big mirrors with integrated mixer taps, and a central rain shower. The starboard side of the bedroom features a desk-cum-vanity table, while aft is a walk-in dressing room, where a full-length mirror door comes into good effect.

The hallway leads up three steps to three en-suite guest cabins, starting with a twin to starboard, then a similar port cabin whose bathroom also acts as the day head. The VIP suite in the bow has an aft-facing bed, storage and hanging cupboards on either side, plus a bathroom to starboard.

Owners in Asia still have the option of an entertainment room in place of the master suite, as well as an open bar on the main deck, in which case the galley is located on the lower deck.

The well-hidden access to the crew quarters is concealed in the cockpit, underneath the starboard stairs to the flybridge. A hallway leads aft to an en-suite captain’s cabin (or storage space), to port to the crew cabin with en-suite, and forward to the engine room.

The standard propulsion is twin 1,400mhp MAN engines, which produce a top speed of 28 knots, but both owners in Singapore have the upgraded 1,550mhp versions for a top speed of 31 knots.

Other options include a joystick with docking mode, DPS (Dynamic Positioning System), a Seakeeper NG16 and Humphree fin stabilisers. New Ferretti Yachts models arriving in Singapore include a 500 and 550, while the brand’s next collaboration with IdeaeItalia is the upcoming 860, which will succeed the 850 and sit above the 780 in the eight-strong range.

The luxury YALLA yacht is a multi-award-winning yacht built by CRN Yachts. The YALLA was delivered from CRN’s Ancona shipyard in 2014.

The award-winning interior was designed by CRN’s interior design team in collaboration with Droulers Architecture.

There is accommodation for 12 guests in 6 deluxe staterooms, including an owner’s suite and VIP staterooms.

The guest accommodations all have the best quality furnishings, amenities, and en-suite bathrooms.

There are facilities for 22 highly trained crew members, making the yachting experience of the highest quality for guests.

The yacht has many features that include a beach club that creates an area for indoor-outdoor living level with the water.

There is a pool, a well-equipped gym, and plenty of areas for socializing and al fresco dining opportunities.

There is an abundance of options for sunbathing on the YALLA. The garage has a limousine tender and many water toys that offer fun and action while aboard the yacht.

The interior of the YALLA yacht was a finalist for The ShowBoats Design Awards 2015 for Interior Design in a Motor Yacht over 500GT.

The exterior of the YALLA yacht was a finalist for the Naval Architecture Award on a Displacement Motor Yacht and the Exterior Design & Styling Award on a Motor Yacht over 500GT at The ShowBoats Design Awards 2015.

With its four spacious decks and sleek and sporty lines, the YALLA is an eye-catching yacht on the water. She was delivered in 2014 with a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure.

The design was penned by Omega Architects and built at the CRN shipyard in Ancona, Italy. CRN is a builder of luxury superyachts, and YALLA was a custom build for the shipyard.

The external profile of this vessel has been designed by Omega Architects, in close collaboration with the CRN Engineering Department which developed the naval project, while their interiors have been created by Droulers Architecture, which has worked in close collaboration with the shipyard’s Interiors and Design Office.

The new megayacht, the first to be built by CRN on the new naval platform of 12.50 metres in width, is characterized by sleek, slender and sporty lines, which make the profile particularly streamlined. With 5 decks, M/Y CRN 132 73 m can host up to 12 guests in its six cabins, including the Owner Suite and Vip cabins, together with a crew of 22 members.

The construction of this new jewel of the sea, which includes the best design solutions realized by CRN, has required around 430,000 hours of work from the shipyard workers and subcontractors and the daily contribution of over 150 direct and indirect workers.

Off the Hook Yachts Acquires 300-Slip Marina in Georgetown Maryland  

The Acquisition 

Off the Hook Yachts is proud to announce the acquisition of Georgetown Yacht Basin (GYB) now rebranding under Georgetown Yacht Haven – a 300-boat slip full-service marina located on the Sassafras River in Georgetown, MD.  Off the Hook plans to restore the yacht basin to its former glory and reconnect with the local community in order to establish it as a household name in the area. 

As our founder is originally from Maryland, this will complement our current presence in the area, along with our MD sales team, which currently operates out of Bay Bridge Marina. The acquisition of the marina will allow us to expand on sales, service, and custom-built Nor-Tech Performance Boat sales in the region. Georgetown Yacht Haven has 300 slips, two paint sheds that can hold up to a 110-foot yacht, a 110-ton travel lift, a fuel dock, a swimming pool, bathhouses, and a complete ship store, along with many other amenities. GYH controls the largest travel lift in Northern Chesapeake Bay.

Cocoa Bean is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 14 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 15 knots with a range of up to 6,000 nautical miles from her 242,266 litre fuel tanks at 13 knots. An advanced stabilisation system on board reduces the side-to-side roll of the yacht and promises guests exceptional comfort levels at anchor or when underway.

Cocoa Bean knows a thing or two about fun on the water, with a selection of water toys and accessories for you and your guests to enjoy whilst on charter. Take to the sea on the Jet Skis offering you power and control on the water. Also there are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. 73m superyacht Yalla launched by CRN

Italian yacht builder CRN has launched its 73m superyacht Yalla .

CRN welcomed more than 1,000 guests to the launching ceremony of CRN 132 Yalla , held late this morning at its shipyard in Ancona, Italy. The launch ceremony included speeches from Alberto Galassi, new CEO of the Ferretti Group , Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN, Xinyu Xu, Vice-chairman of Weichai Group, and the Mayor of Ancona Valeria Mancinelli.

Part of the Ferretti Group,  CRN  specialises in custom yachts up to 90 metres in steel and aluminium. Yalla is the first yacht built by CRN on its new 12.5m beam platform. More than 430,000 hours from CRN and its subcontractors were spent on Yalla 's build, with contributions from 150 employees.

Exterior styling comes from Omega Architects in The Netherlands, in close collaboration with the CRN Engineering Department. The five-deck motor yacht features sleek, sporty lines and a streamlined profile. Superyacht Yalla 's interiors are by Droulers Architecture, working with CRN's Interiors and Design Office. She hosts up to 12 guests in its six cabins, including an owner's suite and VIP cabins, along with 22 crew members.

'Following the launch of CRN 133 61m superyacht a few months ago, we are proud to celebrate the launch of the new Yalla of 73m, which represents a challenge and an objective for the whole CRN shipyard,' says Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN. ' Yalla will mark another important result for the development of CRN in the world. The Ferretti Group currently has five superyachts underway at the Ancona shipyard, including the 74m CRN 131, 55m CRN 134, a Ferretti Custom Line CL 124, the 61m CRN 133 and the Riva 122 Mythos , which are at the delivery stage.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
