Fiberglass boats are arguably the best kind of boats you can own.  They’re lightweight, fun to use, and easy to maintain.

They’re even easy to repair, and in this post on repairing fiberglass boats, we’ll tell you exactly how to do just that.

Fiberglass Basics You Should Know

Fiberglass is a wonderful material that can be used to repair all sorts of things.

Learn how to work with fiberglass, and you can repair boats, vehicles, bathtubs, and many other items.

You can even learn to create your own parts, canoes, and even coolers.  An entire lifetime could be spent learning how to build and repair things using fiberglass.

But first, you need to know how fiberglass works as well as what it is.  Fiberglass by itself is just a sheet of glass fibers woven or matted together.  By itself, it is not hard, waterproof, or useful for anything.

However, once you apply a chemical resin to the fiberglass, it becomes waterproof, hard, and incredibly durable.  It also remains lightweight, which makes it great for applications such as aircraft, automobiles, and boating.

The type of resin you use, the type of fiberglass you use, and the core material you use will determine just how hard and durable the constructed fiberglass becomes.

Types of Fiberglass Cloth

There are many different types of fiberglass cloths out on the market today.

Some of these cloths include chopped strand mat, biaxial mat cloth, woven roving cloth, continuous roving cloth, carbon fiber cloths, and the list goes on and on.

This being said, there are two types of fiberglass cloths that you’ll be working with:

• Fiberglass fabrics, or cloths
• Fiberglass mat.

The fiberglass fabrics will be your main structural material, but you may end up using a fiberglass mat to help you work around turns and to help waterproof low-stress areas like the live wells.

With these fabrics, you’ll also have different weights.

These weights will help determine how thick and strong the material is.  Popular boating fabric weights are 10 ounces, 6 ounces, 4 ounces, and 1.5-ounce cloths.  These fabrics are sold by the yard and generally come in widths between three and five feet.

The type of fiberglass fabric you choose will be determined by the application you’re using it for.

Also, lighter cloths can be applied in multiple layers, so if you need more reinforcement, you can always combine a 4-ounce cloth and a 6-ounce cloth in two different layers to provide the thickness and strength of a similar 10-ounce cloth.

Types of Resin

There are a lot of different resins out on the market these days, but the two you’ll most likely be working with are either epoxy resin or polyester resin.  Epoxy resin is more expensive than polyester resin, but it is often considered stronger.  It is also more versatile as the epoxy resin will bond well over polyester resin, but polyester resin may not work well over an epoxy.

This being said, different epoxy materials will work better with different core materials.

For example, the polyester resin will melt some foams and plastics.  I found this out the hard way when I mixed some epoxy resin up in a plastic cup.  The resin started leaking right through the bottom of the cup, and I was very thankful that I had decided to play with the fiberglass outside.

Some other types of resin you might run into are polyurethane resin and silicone resin.  These resins are even more expensive than epoxy resin, and it doesn’t really make sense to use them for boat repairs anyway.

Core Materials

The core material is just the material that is encapsulated by the fiberglass cloth and resin.  Core material on boats is usually balsam wood or a foam core.  However, almost any material can become a core material.

For example, I’ve applied several different types of fabric with polyester resin over the top of pieces of cardboard.  The fiberglass and resin are so strong that it turns the cardboard into a hard shell that you can use to make many different things, including small boats.

If you ever need to do a small one-off project that does not require structural support, think about using cardboard as a cheap and easy alternative to creating a mold or using traditional core material.

This being said, your best bet is to use a core material that is meant for your particular application.  For obvious reasons, being out on the water in a damaged balsa wood and fiberglass boat is a whole lot safer than being out there in a damaged cardboard boat.

Also, keep in mind that you don’t always need a core material.  Sometimes you can create a mold that simply holds the fiberglass and resin together until they dry and become components themselves.  Many fiberglass hulls are built using molds that consist of a thick layer of fiberglass and resin, and they are designed to be very strong with many layers of built-up woven fabrics and mats with no core material.

When you’re doing repairs on an existing fiberglass boat, you may not be using any core material either.

This is especially true if you’re just repairing a crack or hole in a non-load-bearing area.  In this case, you’ll just be applying cloth over the crack and sealing it with resin.

How Is The Fiberglass Applied?

There are a few different ways that fiberglass can be applied.

• Roll it on with a paint roller
• Paint it on with a brush
• Spray it on with a spray gun.

When doing fiberglass boat repairs, you’ll most likely be painting or rolling it on in small batches. 

The way you’ll do this is you’ll mix up a small amount of resin that you can successfully paint on over the fiberglass within about 15 to 20 minutes.  This is about how much time you’ll have before the resin begins to dry and harden.  If you mix too much resin, you’ll end up wasting it, so it’s important to start small until you get a feel for working with it.

Also, keep in mind that all of your fiberglass should be laid out over the area you’re repairing before you begin mixing your resin.

Once your resin becomes active, you won’t have time to go back and cut out pieces of fiberglass.

General Tips for Working with Fiberglass

As we alluded to earlier, fiberglass must be mixed before it can become active.  This is usually done with a hardener.  The manufacturer will tell you just how much hardener needs to be added to the resin.

Gel coats can also be added to the resin, but this shouldn’t be done until you are on your final layer.

If you apply the gel coat too early, you’ll end up having to sand the layer down before you can add any additional layers.

Also, keep in mind that fiberglass resins are meant to be used at different ambient temperatures.  If the temperatures are too high or too cold, the resin will not cure properly.

You’ll know the resin didn’t cure correctly if the fiberglass feels tacky afterward.

Safety Tips for Working with Fiberglass

Fiberglass resins and hardeners can be toxic, and it’s important to keep them off of your body and out of your lungs.

Personally, I only work with fiberglass outside, but any well-ventilated area will do.

Also, if you’re working with polyester resin, you’ll want to wear a respirator.  Not only is polyester resin toxic to breathe, but it smells awful.  The smell is so bad that I won’t even leave the closed bottle of polyester resin inside my house for fear that it will make the house smell bad.

You don’t want to get resin on your skin or your eyes either.  Wear protective clothing, gloves, and safety glasses to prevent this from happening.

For additional protection, you can also get a lotion that will work to coat your hands.  This way, if the resin gets through your gloves, you’ll have an extra layer of protection between the resin and your skin.  If the resin does end up getting on your skin, be sure to wash it off immediately. 

People have been known to develop allergies to epoxy resin, and once you get this allergy, you’ll never be able to be around epoxy resin again.

Fiberglass Buying Tips

• Always buy fiberglass by the roll. Unfortunately, many people will try to sell you folded pieces of fiberglass because it is cheaper and easier to pack, ship, and store it this way.  Sadly, folding fiberglass cloth can weaken the strands, so when you buy fiberglass that is folded, you’re buying cloth that is already damaged.
• Buy the hardener with the resin. It’s always easier just to buy the hardener and gel coats with the resin.  Different resins will need different amounts of hardener, and the manufacturer will usually sell the two as a kit.
• Get good mixing cups. A poorly mixed resin will not work properly.  Get good mixing cups so that you can accurately mix the resin and get the most benefit from it.
• Buy it locally (at first). A local marine store owner can often offer you valuable tips for working with fiberglass, and they can help tell you where you went wrong when you run into trouble.  You’ll probably end up paying a bit more for your resin, but you’ll often end up with some good and free advice.
• Buy the right fiberglass for the job. When you go to buy fiberglass, you’ll notice right away that chop strand mat is dramatically cheaper than all of the other types of fiberglass.  There is a reason for this.  Fiberglass mat is not very strong, and it can be difficult to work with.  Only use fiberglass mat when the job specifically calls for it.  Resins are expensive, so there isn’t any point applying them over inferior fiberglass cloths.

Repairing The Hull

Before you decide to repair your own boat hull, you may want to do a reality check.

Is the boat hull severely damaged?  Is your boat an ocean vessel that is going to be put under a lot of stress?

If you answered yes to these questions, you might want to save this project until you have a lot more experience with fiberglass repair.  In this situation, a bad repair job could put your life in jeopardy, so the money you save will never be worth it.

This being said, there are a lot of small hull repairs that you could tackle yourself without much risk.  For example, a small hole in a small boat that you only take out on the lake shouldn’t be too much for you to handle.  Small cracks or holes in the areas above the water line might not be a big deal either, but please use your best judgment.

Repairing Holes in The Hull

To repair a hole in the hull, you may need to get some new core material.  Try to match the new core material with the existing core material.  Make sure the remaining core material is dry.

Once you have the core material, you’ll need to fit it into the hole.  Next, measure and cut your fiberglass cloth.  Lay the fiberglass over the area, using fiberglass tape if you have to.  Once everything is in place, mix up your resin and apply it over the damaged area.  You may need to do multiple layers.

For professional repairs of ocean-going hulls, the surrounding fiberglass is ground back on a slope of 1:12 to make a large area to be repaired; a 1/2″ thick fiberglass structure would be ground back 6″ in every direction from the hole.

The patch is then built-up with increasingly larger pieces of fiberglass mat and resin.  Again, you need experience before trying this.

Your final coat should be a gel coat that matches the color of your boat.

Alternatively, you could repaint the boat after the repairs have been made.

Repairing Cracks

Be careful when repairing cracks in your hull, as they could be a sign of bigger structural issues.

For example, a balsa boat with cracks in it could have rotten wood inside the hull.

However, if you just see some cracks from when you accidentally backed into a tree last week, feel free to try to take on the repairs yourself.  You probably won’t need any new core material, but you will need some fiberglass and some resin to patch up the crack.

Measure, cut, and layup your fiberglass before mixing your resin, and you shouldn’t have any trouble with the repair.

One thought to keep in mind with a repair like this is that you’ll probably spend more time sanding and painting than you will be doing the actual repairs.  The more time you spend sanding, the better the boat will look when you’re done.

Repairing The Floor and Deck

The first thing you should do before making any repairs to the deck or the floors is to check to see how severe the damage is.

Often-times, decks and floors are made from wood, and if they are spongy or have holes in them, the wood is probably rotten underneath.

Before making any repairs to the fiberglass, you’ll need to take out this rotten wood and replace it.  What seems like a small repair, in the beginning, can often end up being an extensive repair.  If you don’t believe me, just look at all the free “project boats” listed on Craigslist.

Oftentimes you’ll see that the person giving it away received the boat for free himself, thinking that he could do the repairs and get a free boat.

Once he started to tear the boat apart, he realized just how much work and money would be needed and decided to give up on it.

Once you do know what you’re in for, start replacing the decking and flooring, making sure to keep the materials dry until they are encapsulated with new fiberglass and resin.  Also, be sure to make a note of where the different pieces of hardware are connected to the deck, as you’ll need to put them back on when your repairs are complete.

If you’re careful, you can use the old decking that you pull off the boat as a template for creating your new decking.

Once your new flooring is complete, secure it to the boat and begin placing the fiberglass cloth over it.  Be sure to use a good amount of fiberglass as the decking will need to be strong enough to support people walking over it.  Mix up your resin and apply it in small batches.

If you have a large area to do, you’ll be tempted to make larger batches but don’t do this as you’ll only end up rushing the job or finding the resin sets up prematurely.

Flooring Alternatives

Another thought to keep in mind is that you don’t always need to replace your wood flooring with wood.  Some people will skip the fiberglass altogether and simply install an aluminum floor instead.

This can be useful in certain applications but not very useful in others, so you’ll need to analyze your particular situation before you decide to make any changes.

If you do decide to skip the fiberglass, just be careful to find out what changes this will have on the weight of your boat.  Making a heavier boat could reduce your boat’s max capacity and affect the way your boat sits in the water.

Repairing The Keel

The keel is an integral part of a boat.  On a sailboat, the keel keeps the boat upright in the water and helps to keep it stable in heavy winds.

Being at the bottom of the boat leaves it much more vulnerable to scraping the ground and running into rocks.  For this reason, a keel can often take damage even when the rest of the boat remains trouble-free.

The question is, do you want to repair this damage to the keel yourself?  

If you have a small recreational boat that you can easily bring up on land, I’d say go for it.  You can flip the boat over in your backyard and spend as much time as you need applying a new resin and gel coat to the keel.

For boats that you know will be scraping the bottom again, you may want to apply a keel guard as well.  This will help protect your keel, so you don’t have to constantly make repairs each season.

Repairing The Transom

A solid transom will ensure that your boat’s engine doesn’t fall into the water.  If you’re going to make this repair yourself, make sure you’re prepared to do it properly.

Oftentimes the core of the transom needs to be replaced, and you’ll want to make sure you replace it with a material that is as strong or even stronger than the original.  This is especially true if you’ve upgraded the original boat engine to something bigger and heavier.

Once you’ve replaced the core material, the steps for making the repair remain the same.

Apply your fiberglass boat cloth and use as many coats of resin as you need to get the job done.

This repair includes a lot of hard edges, so you may need to overlap your layers of fiberglass at the top to get a good seal.  Take your time and make sure the fiberglass wraps properly, or you’ll end up having to do a lot of sanding at the end of the job.  Also, be careful to account for where the engine will be mounted so that you can match the hardware appropriately.

Repairing Hatches

Hatches are easy repairs, and they’re great for getting started with fiberglass.

When replacing a hatch, use the existing hatch to make a template for the new one.

The new hatch should be easy to make, and you won’t have to use a lot of thick fiberglass cloth since it won’t be the main structure of the boat.

The main thing to keep in mind when doing this repair is that the hatch will need to be sealed properly afterward.  Oftentimes, people will do a great job repairing or replacing the fiberglass hatch, but they won’t seal it properly afterward, and they end with a leaky hatch.

Repairing Scratches

Scratches in the fiberglass usually don’t require extensive repairs, and the cost is usually minimal.

The reason for this is that the fiberglass does not need to be replaced, and the core material is not yet affected.

Unfortunately, some deep scratches in the gel coat can end up creating a lot of prep work.  You’ll end up needing to do a lot of sanding to get the boat to look new again.

You’ll also need to do a good job matching the color.

If your boat is new, this may not be a problem, but if your boat has been out in the sun for a while, you won’t be able to use the original boat color as it will end up being too dark.

You’ll have to color match the boat, or you’ll have to resign yourself to painting the entire boat over again.

DIY Costs vs. Professional Costs

Doing repairs yourself will usually save you money, and they can sometimes even save you on time.

However, some jobs are too big to be done by beginners, and some jobs just take too much time for the DIY repair to be worth it.

I’ll try to give you a breakdown of some of the costs here so you can decide for yourself whether or not the repair is worth paying for or doing yourself.

Example costs from FiberGlassSite.com:

• 6-ounce fiberglass cloth 50” wide and 5 yards long. – $25.00
• 1 gallon of polyester resin with hardener.  – $39.00

With this much cloth and resin, you could do a lot of small repairs of cracks and holes.

A simple hole or crack repair might cost you $50.00 each, so you’d definitely save money on smaller repairs, and you may even have some extra fiberglass left over for the future.

For a balsa core deck repair, you might want ¾ inch core.  This costs about $50.00 for a 2’x4’ piece.  You’ll also need a 10-ounce fiberglass cloth and polyester resin.

This repair might end up costing you a couple of hundred dollars, but it could save you a thousand.

Foam core used for repairing heavy damage to the hull of a sea-going vessel will need to be very strong.  Not only this, but you’ll need to consult with a marine technician to determine what the best combination of foam, resin, and fiberglass should look like.

Between material costs and consulting costs, you’ll end up spending thousands of dollars.  You’ll also end up spending a lot of time, and you may devalue the worth of the boat since a buyer might not feel safe buying a boat that was repaired by an amateur.

In this case, you may be better off paying a professional boat repair company to do your repairs.

1. Pull the boat out of the water if you can.

If you must dive under the boat while it's in the water, be sure to do so in a safe area without marine traffic. Use a flag and markers to alert other boats that you're in the water, as they may not be able to see you when motoring around.

Fiberglass Blister Repair

Fiberglass blisters occur because water passes through the gelcoat.

Water soluble chemicals inside the laminate exert an osmotic pull on water outside, and some water molecules find a way through the gelcoat. As more water is attracted into the enclosed space, internal pressure builds. The water molecules aren't squirted back out the way they came in because they have combined with the attracting chemicals into a solution with a larger molecular structure. Instead, the pressure pushes the covering gelcoat into a dome — a blister.

There has been a great deal of hysteria about blisters, but the reality is that the number of boats that develop serious blister problems is extremely small. An occasional blister or two is not a serious problem, any more than is an occasional gouge in the hull. Some boats seem to exhibit a greater propensity to blister, presumably due to the chemical components used and/or the lay-up schedule, but all boats are at some risk. Surveys suggest that about one boat in four develops blisters.

Repair Materials

Effecting the repair of a few hull blisters requires an appropriate quantity of epoxy resin and hardener. Do not use polyester resin for blister repairs; you need the stronger adhesion and better water impermeability epoxy provides.

You also need a filler to thicken the epoxy into a putty. Select colloidal silica. Never use microballoons or any other hollow or absorbent (talc, for example) fairing compound to fill blisters.

A quart of acetone, a box of TSP (trisodium phosphate), a few acid brushes, and a 36-grit sanding disk completes your supply list. If the blisters penetrate the laminate, you may also need a yard of 6 to 10 ounce fiberglass cloth.

Minor Blistering

The first step in minor-blister repair is opening the blister to let it drain. Pop the dome with a chisel, screwdriver, or rotary tool. Be sure you are wearing eye protection; pressure inside a hull blister can be double that of a bottle of champagne, and the fluid that blasts out when you pop it is acid.

Load a disk grinder with your 36-grit disk and grind the open blister into a shallow depression. The rule of thumb is that the depression should be 20 times as wide as it is deep, and it should only be as deep as required to remove any damaged laminate beneath the gelcoat.

Use a plastic mallet or the handle of a screwdriver to tap the hull all around the blister. Sound laminate will give a sharp report. A dull or flat sound anywhere indicates additional delamination, meaning that the blister is larger than you thought. Increase the circumference (not the depth) of the depression until the laminate all around it is sound.

Flush the open blister with water, then scrub it squeaky clean with a solution of hot water (if available) and TSP 7mdash; about a quarter cup of TSP to a gallon of water. Rinse thoroughly, then allow the blister to dry for at least 48 hours, longer if practical. If you dry-store your boat for the winter, grind and scrub blisters at haulout but don't fill them until launch time.

Just before filling, scrub each depression briskly with a clean rag dampened with acetone.

Mix a small quantity of epoxy (one pump) and paint this unthickened resin into the cavity. Wet out the entire surface of the depression. Use an acid brush to apply the epoxy and give this application 20 or 30 minutes to begin to kick. For shallow blisters, prepare a small amount of fresh epoxy (one or two pumps) and thicken it to peanut butter consistency with colloidal silica. Fill the depression completely with this mix, using a squeegee to compress and fair the filler. Silica-thickened epoxy is difficult to sand, so take extra time to fair the epoxy as well as possible while it is wet.

Deep blisters require the replacement of the damaged glass fabric. Cut a disk of fiberglass cloth to match the diameter the depression, then cut several more, each a little smaller than the last. Use only fiberglass cloth. Chopped strand mat (CSM) can be held together with a binder that is incompatible with epoxy, so never use mat with epoxy resin unless you know it is specifically intended for epoxy use.

Wet the bottom of the cavity with epoxy and lay in the largest disk of cloth. Wet out the cloth with resin until it is transparent, then lay in the next, slightly smaller disk. This counterintuitive schedule of large to small maximizes the area of the secondary bond, the adhesion of the new cloth to the old laminate. Wet out the second layer, using the end of the brush to tamp the disks and compress them together. Continue adding disks and saturating them with resin until the repair is even with the surrounding surface. Curing epoxy generates heat, so if your repair requires more than 5 layers of cloth, you will need to pause after 4 or 5 to allow the epoxy to kick and the heat to dissipate before continuing.

Whether you have filled the cavity with glass disks or epoxy putty, allow the filler to kick. When the epoxy is no longer fluid, but still tacky, paint the repair and an inch or so beyond with at least two coats of unthickened epoxy, letting each coat kick before applying the next.

Let the repair cure for 24 hours, then scrub it with water and an abrasive pad (like Scotchbrite) to remove the waxy film on the surface of the epoxy. Fair the repair with a sanding block and you are finished.

Gelcoat should never be applied over epoxy. Since the repair will be covered with bottom paint, there is no need for a gelcoat surface anyway. Don't use gelcoat in blister repair.

Boat pox is a much more serious condition, related to the occasional blister like acne to the occasional pimple. If the bottom of your boat is covered with blisters, filling them won't cure the problem. Pox is a systemic condition indicating that the hull is saturated. The actions necessary to remedy boat pox require specialized equipment and expertise.

How to Repair Gelcoat

Own a fiberglass boat long enough, and you’ll end up with a scratch, nick or gouge in the finish. It might be from a muffed landing, a dropped pair of fishing pliers or just a hole drilled in the wrong place. You can usually fix gelcoat repairs yourself. It takes a bit of patience, but do it right and few will notice.

Complications occur when there’s damage on a textured surface like diamond nonskid or on a multitone finish. For these, call in a pro. Also, deep gouges may need structural fiberglass work or filler before you repair the gelcoat. On horizontal surfaces, liquid gelcoat works, but for vertical surfaces, a paste is easier to apply. The first step is identifying the finish on your boat.

You’ll need to fill deep gouges with resin and filler before applying finish. Epoxy resin and fillers adhere better than polyester products but cost more and require several extra steps prior to applying the finish color of either gelcoat or boat paint . If you choose paint, topside alkyd enamels, polyurethanes and others are available from Interlux and Pettit.

Gelcoat Repair

1. Match the Color For current boats , your dealer might be able to supply matching gelcoat. But due to weathering on your boat, it may not match. There are kits from companies such as Evercoat with pigments to add to the resin for a match. If you have a sample, you can match a gallon of gelcoat from Rayplex Composites (fibreglass.com).

2. Clean Up Edges Use a rotary grinder to smooth the edges to a 45-degree bevel and eliminate any loose material. If repairing a drilled hole, the surface might have become elevated from the upward pressure of an old fastener. Use a countersink bit or rotary file and a drill motor to carefully grind away the swollen perimeter. Scrape away any old sealant and clean up with acetone.

3. Tape It Off Carefully mask around the edges of the fiberglass boat repair area with two-inch-wide 3M ScotchBlue Multi-Surface Painter’s Tape No. 2090. Give yourself a 16th of an inch of unmasked margin around the scratch, gouge or hole. Also, mask off any adjacent areas or items to protect them from inadvertently applied gelcoat or errant sanding. Clean up the repair area again with acetone.

4. Mix the Gelcoat After you have color-matched the amount of gelcoat needed for the repair, add catalyst (aka hardener). Different gelcoat resins require different catalysts, so make sure you are using the proper formula, as well as the right two-part ratio (e.g., four drops of catalyst per teaspoon of resin). Mix the two parts thoroughly with a stir stick to ensure that the entire batch will cure at the same time.

5. Apply Gelcoat Use a small wood or plastic putty knife to spread the gelcoat smoothly over the gelcoat repair. You should have about 10 to 15 minutes of working time after adding the catalyst before it starts to harden and is no longer fluid. Fill the repair slightly higher than the surrounding surface to allow for sanding. If you don’t plan to sand, make it even with the surrounding surface. Either way, spray it with a PVA curing agent.

6. Sand It Out Peel off the PVA. Wet-sand the cured gelcoat with 320-grit wet/dry paper on a soft sanding block. Confining work to the immediate repair area, continue wet-sanding with 600-grit paper until nearly even with surrounding gelcoat. Finish wet-sanding with 1,000-grit paper; then buff out with rubbing compound followed by a coat of wax. If not sanding, just peel off the PVA and apply wax.

How to Repair Boat Fiberglass

What is Fiberglass and What Gives Fiberglass Strength?

Fiberglass is from two components: resin and fiber. It is called fiberglass because the structural fiber used is actually woven with tiny flexible strands of glass. The fiber is then saturated with resin, stretched into place, and when it cures through a chemical reaction, the result is a hard and durable material. The strength of the fiberglass largely depends on the weight of the structural fabric that is used. There are different weave patterns to the fabric that render it useful for different applications. The resin component is either polyester resin or epoxy resin. Epoxy resin is stronger. If the repair area is large and is in a high-stress part of a boat below the waterline, epoxy resin is the superior choice. This is because it has excellent bonding properties to an existing surface and is strong.  Polyester resin is commonly used. However, one drawback is that it shrinks as it cures and thereby diminishes its adhesive qualities. This shrinkage is insignificant in small repairs, even in high-stress areas. But because of the shrinkage and reduced adhesion, there are limitations to using polyester resin for large repairs in high-stress areas. However, outside of large structural repairs, polyester resin is the material of choice and is used in the bulk of fiberglass repairs.

For small fiberglass repairs, polyester resin is used in combination with mat or chopped cloth mixed in resin to make a sturdy repair.

Fiber Choices For Fiberglass Repair

The most common type of fabric is plain weave cloth. It is easily recognized as it is woven at 90 degrees, and it looks like cloth. It comes in different weights, and a thicker cloth is stronger. One limitation of plain weave cloth is that it doesn’t conform to complex shapes or curves. It’s best applied on an even plane. For complex shapes and compound curves that require strength, the best fabric is modified twill. Its weave appears to be diagonal, but in reality, it is also woven at 90 degrees and is a looser weave with flexibility. It can conform to complex shapes without wrinkling. The most flexible fabric is called a mat. It has hair-like strands going in every direction. Mat is bonded with glue that dissolves in polyester resin, enabling it to conform easily to complex shapes or compound curves. However, it has less strength and is often used in cosmetic applications unless built up in many layers. Lastly is a fabric called roving. This is a fabric that has course bundles of strands in its weave. It is a very heavy fabric for the strongest of applications. It will be used in combination with layers of mat to give a smooth final surface.

Structural fiberglass cloth and cosmetic mat are used in combination with resin to make a strong fiberglass repair.

Repairing a Hole With Fiberglass 

When repairing a hole with fiberglass, repairs are best made by access from both the inside and the outside of the repair. However, access from the interior may not always be possible because a floor or interior wall may block access.  If it’s a serious structural repair in a high-stress area, you’ll have little choice but to cut a hole through the floor or wall to access the inside of the repair. However, doing a repair from the outside only is possible for small repairs or repairs in low-stress areas.  The first thing to do is assess the damage carefully by cleaning the exterior with acetone. This will make hairline cracks evident, and you’ll want to grind all the way back until the crack terminates. First, using a 4-inch grinder with 80-grit sandpaper, grind or cut away any broken material in the perimeter of the hole that lacks structural integrity. Then with the grinder, taper the edges of the hole using a 12:1 rule. That is, taper back the edge of the hole at an angle that is 12 times the overall thickness of the fiberglass material.

To repair a hole, use a 4-inch grinder and coarse sandpaper to grind away any broken material that lacks integrity. Then taper back the edges of the hole.

If it’s a repair from both the inside and outside, the taper will be centered on the thickness of the fiberglass and taper back on both inside and outside, resembling the cutting edge of an ax.  If the repair is done from the exterior only, then the taper will start at the bottom of the thickness of fiberglass and taper toward the outside, resembling the cutting edge of a carpenter’s chisel. Next, after the taper from the edge of the hole outward is complete, grind back toward the perimeter to where the hairline cracks ended. Now the entire repair area has been defined. Repeat the same on the inside of the repair if you’re doing a two-sided repair. Clean all surfaces with acetone to be free of dust so the resin will adhere.

For a two-sided repair, next, you’ll cut a piece of fabric that extends to the outer margin of the repair. Mix up resin and hardener, and on a scrap piece of cardboard, lay your piece of fabric, and use a brush to saturate the cloth with resin. Turn the fabric over and coat the other side.  Next, take the brush and apply resin to the interior repair area. Then carefully stretch the resin-soaked fabric over the hole, so it’s on a smooth plane and wrinkle-free. Use the brush to press out any air pockets, so the patch sits flat against the existing interior surface. Once the interior fiberglass patch has been set up and is somewhat hard, have already cut a piece of cloth or several layered pieces of cloth that will fill the thickness of fiberglass to near the surface plane of the exterior. The outermost layers will be a resin-soaked mat, so it will be smooth and not show the texture of the cloth. 

Let the patch dry. Once it is dry, grind down the high spots with 80-grit sandpaper until it is on the plane with the finished surface. At this point, clean off the sanded area, and assess the low spots. If there are still high spots, continue to grind them down. Next, you’ll use a resin that’s mixed with chopped strands of fiberglass. This is a cosmetic layer, as the structural layers are already in place. This will fill the low spots and bring the repair up to plane with the exterior surface. Once the chopped strand layer is set up and hard, grind down the high spots until in plane with the finished surface. The next step is to mix up what is referred to as “peanut butter .”This is resin and thickener and is the consistency of smooth peanut butter.  Using a plastic applicator, apply the peanut butter resin mixture to give the final surface all the way to the perimeter of the repair. If it is a curved surface, use a metal, plastic, or plywood flex board to smooth the final contour. Once this layer is dry, grind it down so you’re perfectly on the plane with the exterior surface. Now there should only be some minor pits and pinholes to fill. Use a skim coat resin and hardener and apply using a plastic applicator. Once dry, sand to perfection using fine sandpaper.

Spray the Gelcoat

The Gelcoat is the shiny hard finish surface on the boat exterior. Once the color is matched, spray on the finish coats of gelcoat. Once the topcoat dries, use 600-grit wet sandpaper and higher to seamlessly blend the new gelcoat with the original finish. Lastly, use wax to give the final buff to make the repair invisible.

Gelcoat is the shiny cosmetic finish to Fiberglass repair. It is sprayed on and built up in multiple applications to create a glossy topcoat.

Repairing a Minor Chip or Gouge in the Gelcoat

In this case, the structural fiberglass has no damage, and it’s just the finish layer of gelcoat that needs repair.  Grind the repair with a Dremel tool to expose clean fiberglass and bevel back the repair edge. Mix up the correct color of gelcoat with hardener, and take a small brush and create a slightly raised puddle of gelcoat that entirely fills the void and extends just past the margins of the repair area.  Let the puddle dry hard, then using 600-grit wet sandpaper, sand until flush with the finished surface. On a flat surface, use a sanding block to create a perfect plane. End with a coat of wax to make the repair blend in perfectly.

Is a boat blister ruining your shiny gelcoat? Don’t panic!

When water seeps underneath your boat’s gelcoat, the pressure creates dome-shaped protrusions on the hull. That’s how osmotic blisters, sometimes called boat chickenpox , are formed. 

A blister will not necessarily threaten the structural integrity of a boat. In fact, more than 95% of boats with fiberglass blisters do not develop any other issues. Yet it cannot be denied that a blister-ridden gelcoat is quite unsightly, and can detract from the resale value of a boat.

In many cases though, the blister repair is inexpensive and does not even require a boat repair expert. If left untreated however, blisters can be dangerous. 

Why Do Boat Blisters Happen?

Boat blisters arise due to the chemical interplay between the gelcoat, the underlying laminate layers and a process known as osmosis. Let’s break that down:

• The gelcoat of a boat is the glossy exterior surface that shields the hull. It offers some degree of structural protection, but that is not its major purpose as it is often permeable to water. With age and abrasion, the gelcoat may erode and wear off. However, it can be restored . 
• Underneath the gelcoat are the layers of laminate , which make up the core structural components of a vessel. They are built from resin-saturated fiberglass, which is quite waterproof, although small quantities of water may pass through.
• Osmosis is the passive diffusion of water through the semipermeable membrane of the gelcoat and fiberglass. When the water goes in, it gets trapped by loose materials within the laminate. These hydrolysable materials such as excess pigment, dust or dirt from the boat’s fabrication may form concentrated acid solutions that draw in even more water.

Eventually, the area under the gelcoat becomes swollen and blisters form on the exterior surface of the hull. Blisters may also appear inside the boat if water is left to collect in the bilge. 

Although blisters occur in one of every four fiberglass boats, they are rarely anything more than a cosmetic issue. Moreover, minor blisters are easily treated.

How to Repair Boat Blisters

Generally, boat blister repair requires the following materials:

• A chisel or screwdriver
• Protective goggles
• Epoxy resin
• Colloidal silica, as filler
• A quart of acetone
• Trisodium phosphate (TSP)
• Acid brushes
• 36-grit sanding disk
• A yard of 6 – 10 ounce fiberglass cloth (for deep blisters)

Do not attempt to use polyester resin instead of epoxy. Polyester is not adhesive enough and does not provide adequate waterproofing. Similarly, microballoon fillers should not be used in place of colloidal silica if you want a lasting treatment.

The procedure for repairing minor hull blisters is to first pop them to let the liquid drain out before grinding the area. The depression created is then washed, dried and filled with resin before fairing and painting over the area. 

For deep blisters that have penetrated the laminate, you will have to replace the damaged fiberglass before applying epoxy resin. Essentially, blister repair can be performed in five steps.

Pop ‘em open & let ‘em drain

Blisters are most apparent when the boat is initially hauled out of the water, but they often shrink afterwards, sometimes in less than an hour. Circle them with a marker just in case this happens. 

The liquid contained in a blister is acidic and gushes out under pressure. Use a chisel or screwdriver to pop the blisters and let the foul liquid drain completely. It’s a good idea to hold the chisel at arm’s length and wear protective goggles, for your own safety.

Grind the area

Using a disk grinder loaded with your 36-grit sanding disk, grind the open blister into a depression. It should be no deeper than the last damaged layer of laminate beneath the gelcoat. A rule of thumb is to grind the depression 20 times wider than it is deep. 

You should not limit grinding to the open blister, but also to the surroundings. With the handle of a screwdriver or chisel, tap around the blister pocket. Damaged laminate will give a noticeably dull report, while firm laminate will sound sharper. The depression should enclose the entire delaminated region.

Note that merely sanding with coarse-grit paper will not be as efficient as a grinding wheel or disk grinder.

Flush with water, and dry

First wash the open blister with water to remove any loose particles from the laminate. Then, prepare a scrubbing solution using a quarter cup of trisodium phosphate and hot water. Use that to scrub the hull clean in order to leach out any remaining chemical liquids. 

Thoroughly rinse the blisters and leave to dry completely. You can use a moisture meter to check, but many experts recommend a two-to-three month drying period for a blister-ridden hull. However, if you’re only dealing with a handful of blisters, two days should be sufficient.

Fill the blister with epoxy resin

Prior to filling, dampen a clean cloth with acetone and use it to briskly scrub each depression. Mix one pump of epoxy , and paint the resin into each cavity with an acid brush, making sure to wet the entire surface. After about half an hour, the application should begin to kick. 

Minor blister filling

For a minor blister, use colloidal silica to thicken a small amount of fresh epoxy to the consistency of peanut butter. You should use this thickened resin to fill the depression completely. A deck squeegee should be used to compress and fair the filler as well as possible while it is wet.

Deep blister filling

If the blister goes beyond the gelcoat, you will need to replace the damaged laminate. Cut out several pieces of fiberglass cloth with increasing diameter; the largest should be the same size as the depression. Make sure to wet the bottom of the depressed area with epoxy before placing the fiberglass disks.

Take care to place the pieces of fiberglass cloth in order from largest to smallest , for maximum adhesion with the original laminate. Saturate the disks with epoxy resin between consecutive layers, while compressing with the end of a brush. Continue adding disks until the repair is even with the contour of the hull.

After every five layers, allow the filler to set. You can then paint over the repair with unthickened epoxy, let it kick, and then repaint.

Sand, scrub and paint

Leave the repair to cure for at least 24 hours, before sanding the entire repair area to level out the filled cavities. This is where overdoing it with the filler mixture can bite back by making you spend a lot of time sanding down the fill. Pro tip: don’t be too liberal with the filler. It saves money and time.

Scrub the entire hull with hot water and soap to remove surface dust and any chemical residue before applying a good coat of bottom paint. 

Wait, no brand new gelcoat?

You don’t need to apply a new gelcoat over the repair job for two reasons. First, epoxy is much more waterproof than gelcoat. Secondly, the whole repair job will be covered with a bottom paint finish, so your boat will still have a glossy exterior. 

As long as you treat blisters early enough your boat will not suffer any structural issues. Ignoring blisters for too long might cause the hull to become saturated – this is a much more serious condition known as boat pox , and requires specialist attention.

Preventing Blisters

To prevent a boat blister from forming, you need a completely waterproof boat. Although this is possible with a complete barrier coating of epoxy, it can be quite expensive. Regular maintenance on your boat is much more cost effective and helps you treat blisters once they appear.

How to Repair Sails On Your Sailboat

Even if you try to avoid any sail damage to your sailboat, there will be a time, unfortunately, when they get damaged at sea. So, what happens in the event of sail damage? Of course, the fact is that you’ll have to repair them while at sea and then quickly do a damage assessment. For that, you will probably need someone to lend you a hand and a flat surface to place the sail open. But before we get to the details on how to DIY repair a sail tear on your sailboat remember to be prepared for any unexpected scenario. In other words, having the right tools and supplies onboard gives you a huge advantage in dealing with the problem. Some of the basic tools include a waxed twine, a selection of sail needles, sharp scissors, spare webbing, and a sticky-back Dacron. Let’s move on and see the details!

Stitching your Sails

It is of great importance for a sailor to be able to stitch a sail by hand. If you know how to do this, it’s really practical in case of a chafe or of any other torn seams. The process is really simple. Firstly, make one pass to stitch on one set of diagonals as well as to the opposite direction and then fill in the other set. This can be applied in case you are following an existing zigzag stitch. Moreover, the sailor’s palm will facilitate you in order to force the needle through the fabric, and pliers will help you pull the needle through it. Patch Repairs

For repairs that are not on a seam, a patch fix is necessary. You can use a Dacron patch for almost everything except spinnakers. Dacron can even stick to many laminate sails on the film side, but not on some resin-based and silicone-covered sails. In addition, dacron tapes come in different forms of thickness rolls and you can also buy larger sheets. Naturally, sails are not flat and they’re made up of panels that create depth. However, due to its design, when the surface you lay it on is flat it might pose you a problem. So do some temporary tucks and folds in the cloth, but away from the rip, and try to keep it flat. So, be patient and follow the below-mentioned procedure:

• The space you’re going to “work” is essential. Find a dry and safe place with a flat surface like below the saloon table or even on a chopping board.
• Always clean your fabric of salt with a freshwater rinse. Then allow a few moments for the fabric to dry. Continue by removing any residues with rubbing alcohol. This tip facilitates the drying process, as the alcohol evaporates.
• Most of the time, some sails (mostly white), tear in lines. For that reason, they shouldn’t be pulled too close together or overlap each other. Otherwise, their shape will change, and thus loading will be created. In case the tear has gone off in different directions repair the longest first.

Seam Repairs

In order to make sure that no seams are starting to appear, try to check your sails daily. It’s not particularly hard for a seam to be unstitched, right in the middle of your voyage. So, if you see any loose stitching, put the sail down immediately, if possible, in order to get it fixed. Stitching a seam back together is a task that requires some time and attention. However, it’s much easier than dealing with ripped fabric. When you stitch seam you just work your way methodically back through all the holes. Try finding a comfy place on deck to work because it might be difficult to move a large sail down below. And remember that “a stitch in time saves nine”!

Patch and Glue

Sail damage can be also caused by a tear to the sun protection on roller-furling headsails. If that happens don’t put new holes in your sail in order to stitch up the tear. This will be really time consuming. Use instead some sticky-back which definitely is an efficient and fast solution. Although you have to take the sail down and put it back up to do that, sticky-back is the answer to this problem.

The first step is to cut the corners of the patch round in order to keep them from peeling off the sail. Then clean the whole area from the repair with acetone, and once the patch is ready, rub from the center to the edge with a scissor handle in order to make sure that it’s totally adhered. Furthermore, sticky-back patches work efficiently for small holes in the actual fabric of the sail. If any holes appear in the fabric then use patches on both sides of the sail, an inch or two larger than the rip in all directions. Keep in mind to slightly counterbalance the two patches so that the load won’t spread out around the repair. Also, take with you ripstop sticky-back to match the colors on any downwind sails, as well as small, pre-cut round patches, which can be practical for small holes in nylon sails.

A lot of spinnakers are no longer stitched and are put together just with tape, so if you need to make a repair it’s a particularly easy task. For most repairs a sticky back spinnaker repair tape is fine. Try not to change the panel’s shape and don’t use too much cloth for the patch. This way you’ll avoid generating unnecessary loads and stress lines. Instead, use the same amount of cloth for the patch so it moves and stretches simultaneously. Also, in case that a tear passes through the panels, repair one panel at a time and not all together. This way each panel is going to move and stretch as it was designed to.

One of the things that need occasional repairs on your sails is fabric. Fabric is one of the most vulnerable parts of your sails. Most of the time, when a sailboat uses its slab reefing it will subsequently wear out the webbing attachments to the tack rings. Therefore a failure of the webbing connection to the mainsail luff slides will be caused. As I’ve mentioned before, the most practical and easy solution to this is to be equipped with twine, a webbing, a needle, and a sailor’s palm . In case you don’t have the correct size of webbing, then Spectra cord can attach a slide fairly well.

These repairs are permanent and won’t take you more than an hour. Another sail damage for many sailboats with full-length battens might be caused by the connection point between the batten and the luff track on the mast. The best thing to do if that happens is to apply West System epoxy along with 3M adhesive sealant 5200 fast cure . This will untie your hands and is also an easy task to perform.

Common Damage Areas

• Spinnakers : Anything sharp can damage the spinnakers. Especially near the boom, so check that everything is taped up. Also, spinnakers tend to get caught between the shrouds and above the spreaders so consider closing off this gap with a bungee.
• Spreader and Rig Chafe : When you’re sailing downwind the mainsail spends a lot of time relaxing on the rig. Keep in mind to fill your spreaders with pipe insulation. Moreover, consider having extra reinforcement patches for the spreaders on the batten pockets and at each reef point.
• Spreader Ends : Always reinforce the sail and put smooth cages around protrusions. In addition, wrap foam around your spreader caps on long voyages.
• Bottom of the Headsail : Try to lower the halyard enough in order to reach the damaged section. Then reinforce with a sail repair tape . In case the conditions don’t favor you to do so, keep a wrap in the sail to take the pressure off the damage.

Summary – How to Repair the Sails

All this is much easier if your sails aren’t damaged in the first place. But, I know for a fact that sometimes you can’t prevent it from happening. In any case, always be alert to what is going on with the rags. Moreover, always carry a sail repair kit (link to Amazon) on board especially for long-distance cruising. Before leaving for any long trip have also a sailmaker service to check your sails for any weak points. Last but not least, in case that your sails are damaged at sea reinforce any loose stitching immediately and tape both sides of repairs to ensure extra strength.

Keels: Minor Maintenance and Repair

Remedies for rusty iron keels.

The best way to treat an iron keel that’s rusting is to sandblast the whole thing and apply a complete, new, epoxy-based coating system. But that’s not always feasible or desirable. Because of the mess involved, many boat yards do not allow sandblasting. Even when this is permissable, a complete recoating job also means a complete re-fairing job, and that in turn means lots and lots and lots of slow, boring, dirty work if anything approaching a proper, smooth foil is to be achieved.

Because of the problems involved in complete refinishing of an iron keel, patch painting of rusted spots is often the only practical way to go.

Begin by cleaning the rusted spots as thoroughly as possible. Take your time here as this is the most important step. Chip off any scale with a cold chisel or welder’s chipping hammer, then wire brush-use a drill-powered brush where possible – and sand with coarse paper until you’re down to clean, bright iron. Use fine sandpaper (#150) to feather in surrounding, sound paint, and you’re ready for your new coating. Get paint on the bare, prepared iron as soon as possible. Iron will begin to oxidize almost immediately, and leaving it bare overnight will make much of your preparation go for naught.

Unfortunately, the best possible anti-rust coatings – those with epoxy bases which are true vapor barriers – are not compatible with other paints. Epoxies just won’t stick to other coatings; and, thus, because patch painting must lap over onto other paint, epoxies can’t be used in this application.

Our own experience backs up the recommendations of the paint manufacturers. The best coating to use in patch painting iron is zinc chromate paint. All the major manufacturers of marine coatings make a good zinc chromate. Take your choice and follow the directions. The most important rule to follow is three coats must be used. The object is to form as nearly an impenetrable barrier to water as possible, and three coats give a far better chance than one or two.

Patch painting isn’t the ultimate answer. Actually the ultimate solution isn’t even the sandblast – epoxy route. It’s replacing the damned iron with lead. But that’s even less economically feasible than sandblasting! Careful preparation and three coats of zinc chromate paint, however, make for a good, economically and manpower effective, finite solution.

As a rule, lead keels require far less care than iron. Nevertheless, they are not maintenance free. While you don’t normally think of your lead keel as corroding away, lead keels can develop significant problems that both degrade performance and reduce the value of your boat.

The main culprit is bottom paints with a high copper content. Copper paint on a lead keel creates a galvanic couple, just as copper paint does on an iron keel. Fortunately, the difference in potential between lead and copper is far less than the difference between iron and copper, so that corrosion problems are commensurately smaller.

However, it is common to see lead keels with crumbly, whitish surface deposits, which when scraped away reveal a porous surface where the lead has corroded. Fortunately, the surface of a lead keel does not corrode and pit in the same manner as an iron keel, and reasonable repairs can be made without expensive equipment.

A drill-powered wire brush will usually grind away surface deposits and do an adequate job of cleaning out shallow corroded areas. It is important to remove as much of the crumbly oxidized lead as possible, to create a good surface for filler bonding.

With the lead clean and bright, fill corroded areas immediately with an epoxy filler. The best epoxy fillers for this purpose are the ones you make yourself from epoxy resin, such as the Gougeon Brothers West System epoxy, and a filler such as phenolic microballoons or microspheres. Remember that lead is pretty soft, and you don’t want your filler to be significantly harder than the surrounding material.

When filling, give the area to be faired a prime coat of unfilled epoxy before applying the thickened epoxy mixture. This will allow a better bond between the filler and the surface. You can allow the clear epoxy to partially kick off before over-coating with filler, but don’t let it cure completely or you’ll get a poor bond.

When the filler has cured, sand or plane it level and smooth. A belt sander or conventional hand bench plane can be used, since lead planes almost as easily as wood.

With all corroded areas and damaged areas cleaned and filled, sand or wire brush the rest of the keel to bright metal. A belt sander or disc sander works fine here, although proper use of either tool to avoid gouging the surface takes a little practice. A lead keel is far easier to bring to bright metal than an iron keel. The fin keel of a 30-footer can be done in an hour or so.

To make sure your keel doesn’t begin to corrode again, you must completely isolate the surface of the keel from the bottom paint with an epoxy barrier.

This is a two-stage process. First, the keel must be primed with a vinyl primer, such as Regatta Vinyltex 50/51 or Interlux Viny-Lux Primewash 353. The primed keel can then be over-coated with an epoxy mastic such as Regatta Epoxydur Mastic 3630-3631. Surface preparation and the timing of application of the coats of vinylepoxy systems are critical, so the manufacturer’s instructions must be followed to the letter.

The epoxy mastic coating does not sand well, so special care must be taken in application to get a smooth keel surface. This same epoxy system can be used on iron keels that have been blasted or ground to bright metal, but is only effective on a completely clean surface free of any rust or scale.

Several coats of the epoxy mastic can be used. The thicker the coating, the more effective the barrier between the keel.

The only drawback of epoxy sealing of an external keel is that it no longer functions as a good ground plane for Loran and single sideband, or as access to ground in a lightning protection system. To compensate, you should install an external grounding plate such as the Dynaplate.

Surface corrosion is not limited to the lead keels on older boats. Poorly alloyed keels on new boats can also corrode. Fortunately, the cure is not difficult – only labor intensive – and the prognosis is for complete recovery and a long life. Yearly checkups are recommended, with local retreatment as necessary.

Beauty of Internal Ballast Really Is Skin Deep

If you’re gloating because you think your encapsulated keel frees you from any worries, forget it. Encapsulated ballast frequently requires more complicated care than an external ballast keel.

The danger is damage to the fiberglass shell surrounding the keel.

Even if you haven’t run aground this year, there’s a good chance that some where along the way you have acquired at least some superficial gouges in the lower part of the keel shell. These should be treated before they become problems. Even superficial damage to the gelcoat can allow water penetration into the laminate.

Treatment of superficial gouges in gelcoat or the first layers of the laminate is straightforward. First, wash the damaged area thoroughly with high pressure fresh water. Dry the gouged area with a handheld hair dryer. Roughen the edges of the gouge with very course sandpaper – 50 grit or 36 grit.

Wash the area again thoroughly with acetone. Use a small, stiff bristle brush to clean the gouge completely. Dry again with the hair dryer, after most of the acetone has flashed off. Don’t breathe the stuff.

With the area thoroughly clean and dry, brush on a clear coat of epoxy resin, followed by resin thickened with microspheres or micro-balloons. Stick waxed paper over the epoxy patch to keep the epoxy from sagging out.

When it’s dry, sand smooth and touch up any voids or hollows with more filled epoxy.

When everything is filled, prime the patch and the surrounding area with a two part epoxy primer, such as Woolsey MFP. This is important, because the gelcoat that you have sanded is now pretty porous, and is more likely to develop blisters than polished gelcoat.

More extensive damage to encapsulated keels, requiring structural fiberglass repair, will be dealt with in another article. How do you tell if you’ve got structural damage? As a rule, any time the shell is ground away so that any of the ballast is exposed, or any time laminate is exposed over an area’ greater than a square foot, you probably need to do more than patch with putty.

Boat Bottom Painting: Why It’s Necessary

What could be worse than showing up at your boat for a weekend outing and seeing that there is needed maintenance to be done? In saltwater, barnacles are a significant issue. While barnacles may not actually damage the gel coat surface of your fiberglass boat, removing them often does cause damage. In wooden boats, aquatic organisms can bore into the wood, causing severe damage. In freshwater, zebra mussels, plants, and algae adhere to an untreated bottom, and it’s a constant maintenance headache to keep scrubbing it off. The solution is a bottom paint that contains copper plus a biocide that holds the bottom free of undesirable aquatic growth.

How Often Does A Boat Bottom Need To Be Repainted?

If your boat is in the water year-round, the bottom should be painted every year. For boats that go in and out of the water, every 2-3 years is sufficient. Many boaters that use ablative paint will alternate bottom paint colors so they can tell when the newest paint layer is thin and becoming ineffective. Also, if the boat has been out of the water for a long time, take an abrasive scrub pad and scuff the ablative paint surface to refresh the effectiveness of the paint. If your boat is in the water year-round, the bottom should be painted every year.

Cette croisière s’est très bien déroulée et je vous en remercie. Les amis croisiéristes et moi-même étions heureux.

Le skipper Renaud est très professionnel, serviable et sympathique. Je ne saurais que trop le recommander.

De plus la météo était avec nous. L’état de la mer aussi. Nous avons pu alterner les nuits dans certains ports avec

des mouillages sauvages. Le bateau était parfait…

Nous avons adoré notre expérience avec Philippe cette semaine, le catamaran est très confortable et la journée fut merveilleuse! Merci 🙂

Nous avons loué un cata pour le week-end en septembre. Un super week-end, d’abord l’adorable Nadine puis Julien, notre super skipper. On recommencera sûrement et nous les recommanderons

Nous avons loué un Catamaran Nautitech cet été, bateau bien entretenu , interieur propre, professionel à l’écoute . Notre séjour fut magique . on espère pouvoir y retourner l’été prochain .

Cher Alain, Ce petit message simplement pour te remercier encore très vivement pour notre croisière à bord du voilier. Ce fut une très belle aventure, remplie de plein de premières fois (Corse, voiliers, nage en mer, etc). Elles en appelleront des suivantes: nous avons été doublement infectés par la Corse et la Sardaigne et par le voilier. On sera très heureux de remettre le couvert. Un grand merci pour ton accueil chaleureux, ta bonne humeur, la manière dont tu impliquais nos enfants, l’harmonica (si, si). C’était aussi une découverte humaine. Tu avais indiqué que tu serais au milieu de la famille: mieux, c’est comme si tu en faisais partie ;-) La semaine intermédiaire a été fort remplie et je n’ai pas eu l’occasion de traiter les photos. On part ce samedi pour deux semaines dans notre petit village perché à 2.000m dans le Valais. Je ne manquerai pas de te partager les photos une fois qu’elles seront un peu triées, sans doute en août. A très bientôt, PS: la Corse ne voulait pas qu’on s’en aille. Notre vol du samedi 5 juillet a été annulé et nous avons été relogés par la compagnie aérienne ne repartant finalement que le dimanche. Moi, je dis qu’il y a des signes...

Cher Alain, Tu nous manques déjà ! Nous tenions à te remercier pour cette croisière sensationnelle en tous points : navigation en toutes conditions, mouillage dans les plus belles criques de Corse et de Sardaigne, cuisine de la mer copieuse et gourmande, apéros et soirées mémorables, instants magiques avec nos 3 enfants apprentis pirates.... et aussi pour la musique si bien partagée avec notre brillant "blues band" improvisé : toi et ton indissociable harmonica, Christophe et son violon (à qui on fait une bise au passage), Jacques et sa guitare, Gunter, les Allemands, etc..... une vraie tournée sur les flots de la méditerranée et sous un soleil d'été toujours présent. Bon vent et à très vite, cher ami, cher marin, cher musicien !

Bonjour Alain, Comme promis, j’ai enfin pris un peu de temps pour t’écrire quelques mots. Après cette belle croisière je t’avoue que le retour en Alsace a été moralement très difficile. Nous avons mis quelques jours voire quelques semaines à nous en remettre ! Le changement d’horaire, la reprise du travail, bref autant de contraintes que tu as réussi à nous faire oublier le temps d’une semaine. Merci à toi. Nous regardons régulièrement les « quelques » photos et cela nous permet de prolonger un peu plus ce beau voyage. Nous faisons des envieux et nous n’hésitons pas à donner ton adresse internet. Mais serons t-il assez courageux pour te contacter ? Pas sûr. Dans tous les cas, les enfants et les parents sont ravis d’avoir partager cette belle aventure qui a tenu toutes ses promesses. Comment faire pour réserver la location du voilier pour une croisière ?

Réponse : Pour en savoir plus sur la location du voilier, n’hésitez pas à prendre contact via le formulaire du site afin que nous puissions vous recontacter pour vous donner tous les renseignements nécessaires pour confirmer votre croisière. Ensuite, la réservation de la location pour votre croisière à voile n’est effective qu’après le versement d’un acompte de 50% accompagnant le bulletin d’inscription qui vous sera transmis. Suite à un problème telle une avarie, l’acompte vous sera remboursé intégralement sans cependant ouvrir des droits à une indemnité. Pour tout autre motif, cet acompte ne sera pas remboursable en cas de désistement de votre part, mais nous pourrons suivant le planning reporter la réservation de la location du voilier à une date ultérieure.

Pour confirmer la location du voilier, il faudra également pour des questions d’assurance communiquer le nom prénom l’adresse date et lieux de naissance de chaque passager embarqué pour la croisière. Un numéro de téléphone portable vous sera également demandé.

Comment venir en Corse ou Sardaigne pour la location du bateau ?

Option 1: Débutez votre croisière en voilier en Corse:

En ce qui concerne l’embarquement pour la croisière celui-ci se réalise à Bonifacio.  Pour rejoindre Bonifacio, vous pouvez-vous prendre un vol à destination de l’aéroport de Figari qui est situé à 20min de Bonifacio. Il y a des liaisons quotidiennes avec le continent.

Pour rejoindre la Corse en ferry le port le plus proche est Porto-Vecchio. Pendant la période estivale, il y a 3 départs par semaine.

Option 2: Débutez votre croisière au Nord de la Sardaigne

Pour rejoindre la Sardaigne en avion, l’aéroport le plus proche est celui d’Olbia . Pour rejoindre la Sardaigne en ferry vous avez le port principal d’Olbia ainsi que le port de Palau qui se trouve plus proche de notre lieu d’embarquement. Il existe des transferts Gènes Palau 3 fois par semaine.

L'île possède un littoral de 1.000 kms, dont 200 kms de plages de sable fin. La côte Ouest, la plus belle, la plus découpée, est creusée de golfes profonds. La Corse est restée très sauvage, elle apparaît au premier coup d'œil comme une montagne dans la mer. La Corse est incontestablement un paradis pour les adeptes de la mer. Eaux cristallines, immenses plages de sable, petites criques désertes ou falaises granitiques peuplées d’oiseaux marins.

Quel est le climat en Corse ? 

Baignée par la mer Méditerranée, la Corse bénéficie d’étés chauds et ensoleillés avec des températures qui ne descendent jamais en dessous de 25°C. 2 Tory politicians join forces to demand feds remove sunken sailboat from St. John River

The April 30 deadline to remove a sunken sailboat from the St. John River has come and gone and the Not a Starship is still sitting on the bottom. 

On Wednesday, the area's provincial and federal elected officials teamed up to call on Ottawa to "immediately remove the wrecked vessel." 

MP John Williamson and MLA Bill Oliver specifically want Transport Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard to remove the remains of the sailboat and, in a joint statement, criticized both for underestimating "the immediate risks posed by Not a Starship."

"Visible evidence of the vessel's diesel, generator fuel and battery fluid leaking into the river throughout the winter was not enough to convince federal officials that this wreck was abandoned," said the statement.

Continuing saga of the sunken sailboat

"Now, its 17-metre mast pierces the water from the river's bed, posing a clear risk to unsuspecting boaters. Likelihood of a collision has only heightened as nearby boat traffic increases with warmer weather."

Last month, an official with Transport Canada said if the boat wasn't removed by the owner by April 30, it would be "deemed as abandoned under the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act, and the owner could face enforcement actions, including monetary penalties."

This week, Transport Canada spokesperson Katherine Proulx said a department official made a visit Wednesday to Not a Starship to "assess the situation." She was asked for more details about the assessment but has not yet responded. 

Oliver, a Progressive Conservative MLA, said people have environmental and safety concerns about the sunken boat. 

"We need to have the boat removed immediately before boating activities increase, we've waited long enough, the time to act is now," he said.

Both Oliver and Williams called on Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez and Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier to "overrule their departments and use the federal powers granted to them under the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act to remove this wreck immediately."

Williamson, a Conservative MP, said he has another worry, in addition to the environmental and navigational concerns. 

"The third one is bureaucratic — that the boat might not be removed anytime soon and that's the primary reason that I joined Bill Oliver today in voicing our concerns — to focus attention on this problem, so it's not studied to death, but in fact, it is acted upon as quickly as possible."

The boat's owner, Jordan Tatton, did not respond to interview requests. 

In an interview in January, however, Tatton said his boat was definitely not abandoned. In fact, at that time, he had planned to spend the winter on it.  

He also dismissed concerns about his boat , confident it would survive the winter. 

By that time, local residents had been expressing concerns about the sailboat for months — even long before the river froze. 

They worried about the environmental damage should the boat sink, since it was equipped with a diesel engine, a generator, and the batteries necessary to operate the solar panels. 

Even at the time the boat started to sink in February, the Coast Guard said it wasn't concerned about pollution.

Within days of it sinking, a spokesperson said there was a "minimal amount of non-persistent oils" on the vessel, meaning the type of fuel on board would have evaporated from the surface of the water within 48 hours.

Williamson said the boat's been on the bottom long enough. 

"I understand that fuels do evaporate and they can have minimum impact on the environment," he said in an interview on Wednesday. "Having said that, I do not want this studied to death."

Williamson and Oliver both said they've received a lot of messages from concerned constituents. 

"I've also received many emails from boaters — mostly sailors and power boaters — that use the river on a regular basis that would just like to see the boat gone," said Oliver. 

He said there are already boats out on the river — and he expects the number to increase quickly as conditions improve. Most will not be on the lookout for large metal poles sticking out of the water, he said.

"These are just the tips of the masts that might not be visible — in the evening, they certainly wouldn't be," Oliver said. "So no, it's a concern, there's no question about it."
