About the Rolex Yacht-Master Collection
The Rolex Yacht-Master is one of the brand’s youngest collections, having been introduced only 1992. And yet, it’s already one of their most diverse, with two distinct models under the family of watches, and dozens of permutations when it comes to dial designs, bezel styles, and bracelet options.
A look into its history shows that Rolex had plans for a yacht-themed watch decades before the Yacht-Master line was launched. Today, it’s a mainstay in the Rolex catalog.
Here are important milestones in the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II history.
1958: Rolex entered a partnership with the prestigious New York Yacht Club, a social and boating club which sponsors an annual regatta.
1966: Rolex solidified its ties to the world of sailing when Francis Chichester – one of the world’s pioneering aviators and solo sailors – became the first person to sail around the globe while wearing a Rolex on his wrist. He sailed on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, from August 1966 to May 1967, taking him 29,600 miles around the world.
1970s: Rolex never got around to creating a watch specifically for this category. The brand did make a prototype of the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on its dial, but they ultimately decided not to bring it to market.
1992: Rolex finally introduced the modern Yacht-Master – the brand’s first luxury sports watch built for the open seas. Whereas Rolex’s previous sports watches had utilitarian themes – the Submariner for diving, the Daytona for racing, and so on – the Yacht-Master was focused on aesthetics and luxury.
1994: Rolex introduces midsize and ladies’ models of the Yacht-Master
1996: Rolex introduces two-tone (steel and gold) midsize and ladies’ models of the Yacht-Master
1997: Rolex introduces the Rolesium version, which combines a steel body with a platinum bezel and dial. Until today the Rolesium is found exclusively in the Rolex Yacht-Master collection.
2007: Rolex releases the Yacht-Master II, which is the world’s first watch equipped with a programmable countdown timer and a mechanical memory. The Yacht-Master II was unlike anything Rolex had launched before. Not only was it massive with its 44mm case, but it also had a bold, visually striking design that stood out among Rolex’s catalog of versatile timepieces.
2019: Rolex introduces the Yacht-Master 42 to the collection. This is the first 42mm Yacht-Master model, offering a larger option for those who find 40mm too small. The first model came in 18k white gold, also a first for the collection, followed by an 18k gold version in 2022.
Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master
The Rolex Yacht-Master collection is composed of two families of watches: the original Yacht-Master, and the Yacht-Master II. While these two models have the same name, they are quite different from each other.
The Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992 as an ultra-luxurious sports watch for yachting and sailing enthusiasts. The nautical-inspired timepiece takes after the Rolex Submariner, but with greater emphasis on luxury materials and aesthetics.
The Yacht-Master II is a relatively new addition to the Rolex portfolio, introduced in 2007. Much larger that the Yacht-Master at 44mm, it is a purpose-built regatta watch equipped with a countdown timer for use in competitive sailing.
FEATURES OF THE ROLEX YACHTMASTER

Rolex Yacht-Master models come in an Oyster case with 100 meters of water resistance, a Triplock winding crown, and a bi-directional rotating bezel with raised 60-minute graduations and numerals. To make the watch easily readable, the dial features lume-filled round, baton, and triangular hour markers; luminous Mercedes-style hands, a date window at 3 o’clock, and a sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens for easier reading of the date.
Since the introduction of the first all-gold Rolex Yacht-Master model in 1992, Rolex has expanded the line in terms of materials, aesthetic details, and mechanical upgrades. Here are the options available within the collection.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II is one of the brand’s largest watches. Each model comes with a 44mm Oyster case that is water resistant to 100 meters, a Triplock winding crown, a Ring Command Bezel, two chronograph pushers, and an Oyster bracelet.
It is also one of Rolex’s most complicated watches, as it features a regatta chronograph with a countdown that can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, allowing yacht racers to accurately time the start of a race. Furthermore, its Ring Command Bezel is more than just a decorative element – it operates in conjunction with the movement and is actually how the user can set the programmable countdown.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II DIALS
The Yacht-Master II dial is unlike anything seen on other Rolex models because of its niche complication. It features a countdown display which can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, and read using the red-tipped arrow hand. Below the hour and minute hands at the center is a running seconds sub-dial. There’s also a red central chronograph hand, which can fly back or fly-forward to its starting position while in motion. It also features 12 square lume-filled hour markers.
ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II MOVEMENTS
The Yacht-Master II is equipped with two of Rolex’s most advanced movements to date, which feature a programmable countdown timer with mechanical memory, and chronograph synchronization.
Earlier models were powered by the 4160, and later models were upgraded to the 4161. The latter is based on the Daytona’s Caliber 4130, which features the same blue Parachrom hairspring for better switch resistance, and offer a 72-hour power reserve.

Popular Rolex Yacht-Master Models
The Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II are both excellent luxury watches that can suit any lifestyle. The Yacht-Master fits the mold of classic Rolex sports watches; while the Yacht-Master II has pushed the boundaries of what regatta watches can do. You can’t go wrong with the Rolex Yacht-Master, but here are some collector’s favorites:
ROLEX YACHT-MASTER with OYSTERFLEX BRACELET
In 2015, the Oysterflex, Rolex’s patented rubber bracelet, made its debut in the Yacht-Master collection. It’s appearance was also marked by several firsts: the first solid Everose gold Yacht-Master, paired with a matte dial and matte Cerachrom bezel.
The practical and edgy combination of solid gold and rubber continued with the release of the 18k white gold Yacht-Master 42 in 2019, and the 18k yellow gold version in 2022. This is a watch for someone who wants a luxurious watch that’s also ready for any adventure.
These models have the Calibre 3235 in place, which offers a 70-hour power reserve, and an upgraded Parachrom hairspring that has 10 times more precision than the traditional hairspring. The Calibre 3235 was also the first movement to receive Rolex’s certification as a Superlative Chronometer, and is regulated to a precision of an impressive -2/+2 seconds a day.
ROLEX YACHT-MASTER RHODIUM DIAL
The stunning combination of Oystersteel and 950 platinum was made even more beautiful with the addition of a sunburst rhodium dial. This luxurious watch is part of the series of Yachtmasters introduced in 2016, which were upgraded with the Caliber 3235 movement mentioned previously. The slate dial is paired with turquoise details on the model signature and seconds hand, which gives just the right amount of color on the sleek monochromatic design.
ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II STEEL EVEROSE GOLD
The highly specialized Yacht-Master II was created as a professional regatta watch which can also be used as a chronograph. On the bezel, it has large 0-10 scale numbers and the Yacht-Master II name. On the dial is a smaller version of this countdown. Together, these allow the wearer to select a countdown interval of anywhere from one to ten minutes.
Aside from being one of the most complicated watches in the Rolex portfolio, the Yacht-Master II also stood out because of its unique look, owing to its 44mm case and bold colors. The steel and 18k Everose gold version is a crowd favorite due to its eye-catching combination of rose gold, blue, and red hues.

Rolex Yacht-Master vs Yacht-Master II Watch Comparison
Within the greater Rolex Yacht-Master collection, there are two very different lines of watches. Although they share a similar name and are even members of the same collection, the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Yacht-Master II are very different timepieces, both inside and out. Historically, the “II” designation at the end of Rolex watch names has been used to denote an evolution or upgrade to the existing line of watches. However, the Yacht-Master II is not an update to any of Rolex’s previous watch lines, and is truly unlike anything that has ever appeared before in a Rolex catalog.
So, what exactly are the differences between the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Rolex Yacht-Master II? Read the rest of our comparison guide to find out.

Design: Yacht-Master vs Yacht-Master II
First released in 1992 as a luxury-oriented version of the traditional Rolex sport watch, the original Yacht-Master model did not have any specific features or complications that would make it specifically tailored to boating or regatta races. Featuring a fairly standard depth rating of 100 meters and a bi-directional rotating bezel crafted entirely from either solid 18-karat gold or 950 platinum, the Yacht-Master is a watch that is designed for those who enjoy the aesthetic of sport watches, but whose lifestyles do not actually require all of their highly-specialized functionality.
With a 40mm case, a traditional 3-hand display, and a dial that follows the usual Rolex sport watch design, the appearance of the original Yacht-Master can most accurately be described as a luxury-oriented version of Rolex’s iconic Submariner. Although a few key aesthetic differences help distinguish it from Rolex’s other lines of watches, the overall design of the Yacht-Master is one that is fundamentally similar to the classic Rolex sport watch.
In contrast, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is a highly specialized regatta chronograph that features a programmable countdown timer with mechanical memory that allows for on-the-fly synchronization to the official countdown clock with both flyback and fly-forward functionality. With a case diameter of 44mm, and a bezel (and dial) design that are specifically designed for use with its regatta timer, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is a watch that was designed from the ground up for boat racing.
Movements: Yacht-Master vs Yacht-Master II
Although the aesthetic differences between the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Yacht-Master II are rather dramatic, an even bigger difference lies in the two movements that are used to power each watch. While one movement follows a conventional time plus date setup, the other is a totally unique and highly specialized movement that is unlike anything found inside any other watch.
The current versions of both the standard 40mm men’s size Yacht-Master and its larger 42mm sibling are powered by Rolex’s Caliber 3235 movement, which is Rolex’s latest three-handed, date-displaying movement that can be found throughout a variety of its current-production watches. While it does offer a longer 70-hour power reserve compared to the previous generation of movement, the overall functionality of the Caliber 3235 is not unlike what you will find from many other self-winding mechanical movements.
On the other hand, the Yacht-Master II houses Rolex’s state-of-the-art Caliber 4161 chronograph movement, which is made up of more than 360 components and packed full of Rolex’s latest and most innovative technologies. The patented function of the Caliber 4161 movement is so highly specialized and unique, that some of the parts of the movement must be made by UV-LiGA, a micro-manufacturing technology that has been mastered entirely in-house by Rolex.
Subtle Differences: Yacht-Master Vs Yacht-Master II
Given how little the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Yacht-Master II resemble one another, some of the less obvious differences can often be eclipsed by the stark visual separation between the two lines of watches. Among the almost endless list of aesthetic differences between the two timepieces are a number of other differences that pertain to a specific part or function of the watch.
From a visual perspective, the bezel on the Yacht-Master and the bezel on the Yacht-Master II could not look anything less alike. Consequently, it can be easy to overlook how differently they function, and how differently the various parts attach to their respective watches. The precious metal bezel on the Yacht-Master has a 60-minute scale in relief upon it, and it has been given bidirectional motion so that it can be used as a rudimentary timer. This type of bezel function is common on sport watches, and can be found on a number of different timepieces, from a wide variety of manufacturers.
On the Rolex Yacht-Master II, the bright-blue Cerachrom insert with 0 to 10-scale and “Yacht-Master II” name in large letters gives the bezel a truly unique appearance. The look is so distinct that one could easily overlook the special function of the Yacht-Master II’s bezel. Unlike traditional rotating bezels that are simply connected to the exterior of the watch, the Ring Command bezel on the Yacht-Master II links the outer rotating bezel to the internal works of the movement, allowing for easier and more efficient setting of the Yacht-Master II’s adjustable countdown timer.
Both the Yacht-Master and the Yacht-Master II are excellent luxury watches from Rolex; however, in terms of functionality and appearance, the two timepieces could not be any further apart. One watch adheres to the traditional form and function of the classic Rolex sports watch, while the other is an entirely new approach to the regatta chronograph that is unlike anything that Rolex has ever put forward. Due to how different they are, neither timepiece can be said to be “better” than the other. Instead, the Rolex Yacht-Master line as a whole benefits from the diversity of the various watches that make up its collection.

History of rolex yacht master ii watches.
Rolex is simply known for creating its classic and traditional timepiece. Although it is never the one to release a new watch each year, but whenever it introduces any new model, it is just indomitable. Thus with the introduction of the new Yacht Master II in 2010, the Rolex set its sail with success. A bit about its history; the Rolex Yacht Master II is a sports watch which was disclosed in 2007 but was first introduced in 2010. It is basically available in four models, and the first ones were the Rolex Yacht Master II Gold 116688 and Rolex Yacht Master II White Gold 116689. Later in the year 2011, the Rolex introduced the next model which was Rolex Yacht Master II Everose Gold 116681 and it was made from steel and Everose gold. And the last model is the 116680 which was released in the Baselworld 2013 and was made available for the first time in 904L steel, fitted with a cerachrom bezel insert in blue ceramic. Originally the watch was introduced with the 4160 calibre movement, but later with the launch of 2013 model which is the 116680, it updated to the 4161 calibre movement which was specifically designed for the Yacht Master 2. The common feature which distinguishes the Yacht Master II from the other models is its large case size of 44mm which has a commanding presence. Thus regardless of the metal variants which has been used in the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht Master II, they all have the same case diameter of 44mm. It is known that it is most suitable for professional sailors because of its feature which is called a Regatta Timer. Now you may ponder what this Regatta Timer actually is? So a regatta timer is chiefly used by the skippers, that is, the master of the boat or the yacht and it is used to determine the exact time when their yacht is allowed to cross the starting line. As you might know that the boats can not just hover or stay put at the starting line, so in case you cross the line before the set time, you are given a penalty and if you are too watchful, you might lag behind, thus this is where the function of regatta timer is being used. So basically the racing committee of the yacht race sets a uniform countdown or "regatta" period during which the boats that are participating have to sail back and forth towards the starting line without crossing it. And this countdown can be set anywhere varying from five to ten minutes depending on the rules of the race. Thus a good watch with an accurate movement becomes essential here. The mechanism of the regatta is really simple. All one has to do is set the time of the countdown to the start, then push the trigger at two o'clock and it begins the countdown timer. And just in case the skipper pushed the trigger too early or too late in the beginning, he can wait for the second signal at a halftime, that is, at 5 minutes, and can re-adjust his timer by pushing the reset button which is at 4 o'clock. And finally, to calculate the exact timing, the remaining time can be read off second by second. Thus this watch is ideal for the sailors, plus the regatta function and the process are really simplified in the Yacht Master 2. Now coming to the four models which the Yacht Master II offers, as mentioned before they are available in four different metal options. Thus you can choose it according to its weights, which ranges from steel which is a bit heavy to gold/steel which becomes heavier, to solid yellow gold which is even heavier to the last which is made of platinum and white gold combined. The next feature is, of course, the water resistance, as it a mandatory element for any sailor's watch. So the Yacht Master II is an Oyster (naturally), which is the waterproof case and it comes with the brand's signature oyster bracelet as well. Next, the dial of the Yacht Master II is simply elegant and has been beautifully executed. It features an all-white lacquer finish with chroma light hour and its minute hands are built in 18k white gold with blue PVD coating, and there is a small second counter present at 6 o'clock. The hour indexes as well have the chroma light markings. And now that the Rolex Yacht-Master II is all about ‘timing the start', the red-contoured countdown arrow which is on the 10-minute countdown gives accuracy to the job by being readable at a glance. Thus pick your choice of luxurious Yacht Master II, and set your watch collection on a sail.

The art of command
The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II in 18 ct yellow gold with an Oyster bracelet and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a blue Cerachrom insert .
Ring command bezel, a synchronized countdown.
Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.
As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.
A characteristic aesthetic
The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch.
A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand. The Yacht-Master II’s countdown can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.
18 ct yellow gold
Commitment to excellence
By operating its own exclusive foundry, Rolex has the unrivalled ability to cast the highest quality 18 ct gold alloys. According to the proportion of silver, copper, platinum or palladium added, different types of 18 ct gold are obtained: yellow, pink or white.
They are made with only the purest metals and meticulously inspected in an in-house laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment, before the gold is formed and shaped with the same painstaking attention to quality. Rolex's commitment to excellence begins at the source.
The Oyster bracelet
Alchemy of form and function.
The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.
This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.

The watch of the open seas. The Yacht-Master is easily recognizable for its bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel. This characteristic and functional bezel - which enables the wearer to read time intervals, for example, the sailing time between two buoys - plays a full part in creating the unique visual identity of the watch.

The Yacht-Master has been sharing the stage with other popular Rolex models like the Submariner and Sea-Dweller since 1992. But unlike its deep-diving brethren, the Yacht-Master is the premier timepiece for skippers. Thanks to a wide range of available case sizes - from 37 to 42 mm - the Rolex Yacht-Master is a perfect fit for most wrists.
Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master.
In fact, my Omega Planet Ocean is only 42mm x 15.7mm, and feels much bulkier and heavier than the Yacht-Master II. The case is alternating with polished and satin-finished and features a nautical blue ceramic bezel. The pushers are, as is Rolex's MO, a perfect length. Even though I'm left handed, and therefore wear my watch on my right ...

Movements: Yacht-Master vs Yacht-Master II.
