Court date set for Margaritaville arguments, Torgerson acquires Gulf Marine Ways and Supply

The Florida Court of Appeal Second District has set a date of June 9 to hear arguments in an appeal relating to the challenge brought by Chris Patton and attorney Ralf Brookes against the Town of Fort Myers Beach Council’s approval for the Margaritaville project.

The arguments will be heard in the courtroom of the Stetson University College Of Law in Tampa. The hearing was originally set for April but was rescheduled.

In the meantime, Tom Torgerson, whose company TPI is behind the Margaritaville project, has continued plucking up properties around town.

On March 16, a company connected to the Thomas Torgerson Trust purchased Gulf Marine Ways & Supply in a transaction that totaled $2.5 million for the exchange of property at 1148 Main Street.

The property was aquired by Yachtworks Fort Myers Beach LLC, whose address is listed at 301 Palermo Circle, which is property owned by the Thomas Torgerson Trust. That property was also bought by Torgerson for $2.5 million in 2015.

Multiple messages left for Torgerson were not returned.

It is not clear whether there was a separate transaction for the value of the business.

Lee Porter, one of the partners in Gulf Marine Ways & Supply, had previously stated that the ownership group had decided to sell the business due to one of the five owners advancing in age. “I’ll be 72 in May and I’m the second youngest,” he said last month. Porter could not be reached for comment following the closing of the deal.

Porter described the company as a first-class boat yard, which started out in the 1960’s building shrimp boats and grew to be a boat repair and storage facility. “They want to keep it the same,” he said of the new owners.
