The trimaran concept measures 92 meters in length, 21 meters in width and 4 meters in draft for a displacement of 1,500 tons and a maximum speed of over 35 knots. The crew complement of the vessel is about 50 sailors. The trimaran has a range of 3500 nautical miles at 15 knots. The hull form features three active ride control systems which significantly reduce pitch and roll motion. The helicopter deck and hangar can accommodate a 14 ton (Merlin type) helicopter. HMSVO's is a full aluminum ship. The scale model on display at the show features a 76mm main gun by Oto Melara, a Phalanx CIWS on top of the helicopter hangar, three diesel engines and three waterjets and a mutli mission bay (over 730 square meters in surface).

For mine counter measure (MCM) missions, the trimaran can be fitted with 2x 40 feet containers for UUVs and their control units. In addition, 16x MCM UUVs can be stored in the multi mission bay. UUVs are launched and recovered with an overhead boom crane at the stern. The MCM configuration also includes 2x 11 meters MCM USVs, 1x VTOL UAV and 1x airborne MCM helicopter.

The disaster relief configuration consists in 7x 40 feet containers, including medical ones. The offshore patrol / special operations support configuration consists in 2x containers, 8x 7 meters RHIBs, 2x 11 meters RHIBs for VBSS teams, 1x ISR UAV and 1x helicopter.

A trimaran is a multi hulled sailboat with three individual hulls; the main hull ( vaka ) and a pair of outrigger hulls ( amas ). These smaller outrigger hulls are attached to the main hull using beams. 

While trimarans have a rich history dating back nearly four millennia, these types of sailboats have only gained popularity in the late 1900s and early 2000s. 

Trimarans are primarily used as personal boats for sailing enthusiasts or racing. 30FFM (also known as FFM and previously known as 30DX) is the next generation multi-mission frigate designed for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). A total number of 22 Frigates are expected to be procured for the JMSDF.

The two shipyards in charge of building the first two frigates of the class are Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in Nagasaki and Mitsui E&S in Okayama.

While in early August, the hulls were still missing their integrated mast at both locations, recent pictures showed the mast and hangar in place on the hull at Mitsui E&S in mid-August. The mast on the hull at MHI was installed the last week of August.

30FFM characteristics

According to MHI, the 30FFM multi-mission frigate will have a full load displacement of about 5,500 tons, with a length of 132.5 meters and a beam of 16.3 meters. It will have a maximum speed in excess of 30 knots. The crew complement will be quite low, at about 90 sailors, indicating a high level of automation on board.

Atsui Yoshioka, Senior Project Manager of the Next Generation Surface Ship Project at MHI previously told Naval News at Sea Air Space 2019 that the main requirements that drove the design of this future ship are:

• Very low radar cross section
• Very high speed
• Reduced crew
• Ability to launch and recover unmanned systems

To achieve such as high speed (over 30 knots), the frigate will be fitted with a CODAG propulsion system consisting in a single Rolls Royce MT-30 gaz turbine and two MAN 12V28/33D diesel engines. Early designs of the frigate showed a combination of waterjet and propellers but the newer scale model (unveiled at SAS 2018 and showcased at various trade shows ever since) doesn’t show the underside of the hull anymore.

30FFM Advanced Integrated CIC

As we reported during SAS 2019, the 30FFM will feature a very advanced and futuristic 360° video wall in its Combat Information Center (CIC). Named the “Advanced Integrated CIC” by MHI, the CIC of the 30FFM features a circular arrangement (while every other CICs are either in square or rectangle shape) and comprises:

• An outer rim, with 14 multi function consoles (plus two extra seats), all facing the wall
• 3 rows at the center of the circle arrangement consisting in:
• (what looks like) a central helm station
• 4 more multi-function consoles (likely for the commanding officer and his XO)
• 2 large horizontal tactical table likely for cooperative mission planning and navigation purpose

According to MHI, the 360° giant screen fulfills many roles. It can be used to display the direct surroundings of the frigate, fusing the feed and data from the many electro optical, infra red, video and even radar sensors onboard. The augmented reality technology will greatly help the crew in the field of navigation, asymmetric warfare and even in the phase of launch and recovery of unmanned surface vehicles.

In addition, the “video wall” can display any kind of information typically displayed on multi-function consoles. We were shown that the information from the engine control room, and typically displayed as part of the integrated platform management system (IPMS) can now be displayed in the CIC thanks to the video wall. Tasks such as engine control, damage control, fire fighting control can now take place from inside the CIC.

30FFM Missions

The 30 FFM will increase the current number of vessels in the JMSDF as well as replace older vessels that have been responsible for coastal defense and minesweeping. So it is designed for a very wide range of missions.

Patrol around Japan

The main mission of the 30 FFM in peacetime will be to patrol the waters around Japan. Currently, this is a mission of older destroyer (Abukuma, Hatsuyuki and Asagiri class), but the 30FFM will take over this mission by replacing these vessels.

Island Defense

As explained later, the 30FFM is equipped with Mk.45 mod.4 5-inch gun and is also given a minesweeping/mine-laying capability. Therefore, it can be inferred that the 30FFM is also useful for island defense.

The Mk.45 is ideal for attacking enemies that have landed on the island. Also, in order to land friendly troops, it is necessary to sweep the mines laid by the enemy.In addition, laying mines to deter enemy landings is also useful.

Overseas deployment

Currently, JMSDF continues to send destroyers to work with countries around the world to deter piracy off the coast of Somalia, Africa. However, this activity has become a huge burden for JMSDF, especially because of the North Korean situation and the increased duties of the JMSDF in the wake of China’s maritime expansion. Therefore, it is intended to send the 30 FFM to these international contributions overseas and to dedicate the destroyer to missions against China and North Korea.

30FFM Timeline

MHI won a contract from the Japanese MoD in August 2018 for the production of the first two frigates and MHI is today working on the detailed design of the frigate as well as production design stage. First steel cutting of the first 30FFM took place in September 2019 at MHI Nagasaki shipyard, and second one in October 2019 at Mitsui E&STamano shipyard. Yoshioka told Naval News in January 2020 (before the COVID-19 crisis) that the launch of the first hull was set for November this year while delivery of the first frigate to the JMSDF was set for March 2022. It is not clear if these dates have move by a couple of months (as is the case with most shipbuilding projects around the world) because of the pandemic.

In addition, this ship design is the first major surface combatant that Japan (via MHI) is actively promoting for export. OPV and Destroyer variants based on 30FFM were unveiled during PACIFIC 2019 last year in Australia.

NEW AUSTAL TRIMARAN PROVIDES VISION OF THE FUTURE FOR FERRY TRANSPORTATION IN JAPAN

Austal has celebrated the company’s latest development in high-speed trimaran technology with the revealing of an 83 metre trimaran ferry, under construction for JR Kyushu Jet Ferry of Japan, at the company’s Henderson South shipyard in Western Australia.

Austal Hull 396, to be known as Queen Beetle, was designed and constructed by Austal Australia and is due for launch in mid-March 2020. The vessel will be handed over to JR Kyushu Jet Ferry in June 2020 and will commence services between Busan, South Korea and Fukuoka, Japan in July 2020.

Speaking at the reveal ceremony, which was attended by more than 100 guests, including Governor of Western Australia The Hon Kim Beazley AC and West Australian Premier The Hon Mark McGowan MLA, Austal Chief Executive David Singleton said the company was proud to be introducing the new trimaran to Japan while offering outstanding value to a new customer, JR Kyushu Jet Ferry.

“We’re very proud to be introducing this new Austal trimaran to one of the most technologically advanced and mature markets in the world. In fact, Queen Beetle will be the first high-speed trimaran ferry to be delivered to and operate in Japan.

“This stunning new ship will truly transform the fast-ferry journey between Japan and South Korea, offering significantly improved seakeeping and an exceptional on-board experience for passengers and crew.

“With a capacity to carry 502 passengers in greater comfort, with previously unavailable amenities such as a shop and café, this new trimaran represents outstanding value to our customer, JR Kyushu Jet Ferry,” he said.

Since 2005, Austal has delivered 14 high-speed aluminium trimarans worldwide, including 11 for the United States Navy. Austal has a further 11 trimarans under construction or scheduled for construction at the company’s shipyards around the world - and remains the only shipbuilder designing, constructing and sustaining large high speed trimaran ferries, globally.

More than 200 West Australians were employed in the design and construction of the vessel, spending a combined 450,000 hours to get the vessel to the current point in its construction program.

WA Premier Mark McGowan said it was particularly pleasing that a range of local suppliers and subcontractors had also contributed to the construction of the vessel, in addition to those directly employed by Austal.

“The extent of the local content in this vessel is proof of both a vibrant shipbuilding industry in Western Australia as well a testament to the quality of the work and products that Western Australian companies can contribute to the maritime sector, whether in civil or defence areas,” Mr McGowan said.

JR Kyushu Railway Company President Mr Toshihiko Aoyagi, and JR Kyushu Jet Ferry President Mr Masayuki Mizuno, who both travelled from Japan to attend the ceremony, congratulated the Austal project team on the progress of the vessel and remarked on the growing anticipation for the new ship in Japan.

“JR Kyushu Jet Ferry is very excited about the imminent launch, completion and delivery of the Queen Beetle trimaran and we look forward to commencing services in Japan, in July. The reveal ceremony has assured us the Queen Beetle will be the most impressive ship in our fleet,” Mr Aoyagi said.

The distinctively red-painted Queen Beetle will be able to transport 502 passengers (and 20 crew) across 2 passenger decks, at speeds up to 37 knots on the 115 nautical mile route.

Featuring a customised interior designed by Eiji Mitooka of Don Design Associates, the Queen Beetle includes two classes of seating plus compartments for groups and families, a children’s play area and nursing room, a café and bar, duty-free shop, lockers for luggage and all-access spaces for wheelchairs and prams. An outdoor viewing deck will further enhance the on-board experience for passengers.

Queen Beetle, Next Generation Trimaran

JR Kyushu of Japan first high speed trimaran ferry, transported by Tutt Bryant Heavy Lift & Shift.

Austal Hull 396, Queen Beetle , is an 83-metre-high speed trimaran passenger ferry. It has a capacity of 502 passenger and an operational speed of 37 knots. Its strategic route is between Fukuoka, Japan and Busan, South Korea. JR Kyushu of Japan contracted Austal Australia to design and build the said trimaran. The all-aluminium vessel was constructed in Austal’s shipyard facility in Henderson, Western Australia.

Austal Australia sub-contracted the heavy lift transport of the trimaran to Tutt Bryant Heavy Lift & Shift (TBHLS) .  The trimaran weighs approximately 770.0 metric tonnes including the cradles and packing. TBHLS designed a transport plan, utilising two numbers of 40 axle lines Scheuerle 3 rd Generation Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) placed side by side with two power pack units (PPU). These SPMT’s are owned and managed by Australian Marine Complex (AMC). AMC have a contract agreement with TBHLS for the maintenance and operations of the said transporters. The transport location from the fabrication yard to the launching site, was very congested due to maintenance works being carried out on other vessels.

The TBHLS engineering team, with the assistance from the operations team, conducted site investigation and developed swept path simulations using sophisticated software, SALSA Plus, from the trailer manufacturer Scheuerle, making sure that possible obstructions along the transport path will be avoided. Due to the location of the centre of gravity of the trimaran, some pendulum axles were pinned-up to distribute the load almost equally to the three hydraulic groups making it more stable and convenient for transport.

With the experience TBHLS crew, the Queen Beetle trimaran was successfully transported and was launched on April 24, 2020 and will operate following its delivery in July 2020. She will be the first high-speed trimaran ferry to operate in Japan.

The 282-Foot Komorebi Trimaran Concept Is Incredible

The 282-foot sailing yacht concept you see here was named Komorebi, after the Japanese word komorebi which means ‘curtain of light’. Penned down by the VPLP Design team, this beautiful yacht was imagined as one of vessels filled with the most natural light, with floor to ceiling windows throughout the yacht and majestic open floor plans.

The main saloon for instance will offer a mesmerizing interior design, with serene views of the surrounding ocean, the swimming pool and the yacht’s small garden that even includes a living tree. Komorebi will be also green in terms of propulsion, with automated wing sails helping it achieve speeds of up to 15 knots in a 20-knot wind.

Supposedly, the hybrid engine mode will allow the yacht to save 30 percent in fuel consumption during a transatlantic crossing which sounds great in theory. The future owners of this beauty will be able to store a small navy of water toys in its three hulls, as tenders, small sailboats and even mini submarines will have room in the elegant trimaran design of this vessel.

The large swim platform at the transom connects to an interior beach club, while a sky-deck provides space for alfresco dining and entertaining areas. We don’t know if Komorebi will ever get the green light, but we can just hope we’ll get to see this elegant and futuristic yacht on the high seas in the next year.

Folding System

Legendary ability, unbeatable reliability.

Folding and unfolding a Corsair trimaran takes only a minute. With just 4 bolts to remove, it is easily managed by one person, and is normally done while afloat. Simply raise (to fold) or press down (to unfold) the inboard end of one cross beam. It can be done from the safety of the cockpit and only a little force is needed due to the folding system’s carefully balanced geometry, and the movement of the floats being mostly horizontal.

The solid aluminium folding struts have absolute control over the folding motion and prevent flexing or racking. A stainless steel bolt on the inboard end of each beam secures the floats for sailing. Crucially, wingnets remain attached during the folding process – their frictionless fixing allows them to tension themselves appropriately through the folding process. The system is so simple and balanced that Corsair trimarans can even be folded while motoring.

TRAILERING ACROSS CONTINENTS

Corsair Marine trimarans are especially weight-conscious, and sit low on their trailers meaning they have excellent trailering characteristics. They are equally easy to launch, giving you more time on the water, and the ability to expore many more remote cruising grounds or participate in regattas far from home. Some Corsair trimaran models go from trailer to water in 25 minutes, and with practice even the largest boat models can be done in 40 minutes.

Austal unveils new trimaran ferry for Japanese operator

Austal has unveiled a new 83-metre trimaran ordered by JR Kyushu Jet Ferry of Japan.

The vessel, which will sail under the name Queen Beetle , is currently under construction at Austal's Henderson shipyard and is scheduled for launch in mid-March 2020.

The ferry will be delivered to its new owners in June and will commence regular operations in July. It will transport a maximum of 502 passengers at speeds of up to 37 knots on the 115-nautical-mile route between Fukuoka and the South Korean city of Busan.

Austal CEO David Singleton said Queen Beetle will be the first high-speed trimaran ferry to be delivered to and operate in Japan.
