Designed by Italian firm Nuvolari Lenard, Kismet 2.0 is 88 feet longer than its predecessor and weighs twice as much. The behemoth has an interior volume of 5,500 GT, in fact. Even at such a size, Kismet showcases harmonious proportions and sleek, elegant lines. The mast and bow, for instance, were modeled after a leaping jaguar and to ensure a distinctive profile.

Kismet Superyacht

Khan once again enlisted U.K. studio Reymond Langton Design to bring the interior to life. The billionaire is known to have very specific and clearly quite lavish taste. He requested the interior of the original Kismet reflect a “Champagne and caviar” theme, for example. The second Kismet is equally extravagant. A two-level open-plan entrance area with sweeping video walls leads to stylish living quarters that span some six decks.

The layout includes between eight and nine cabins for up to 12 guests and cabins for 36 crew. In addition, the owner’s suite comprises a spacious stateroom, dual bathrooms, two dressing rooms, and a private terrace with a Jacuzzi. Above, the owner’s office offers panoramic views, a conference table for up to six, and a dedicated pantry.

“The owner’s brief was challenging,” Peter Lürßen, managing director of Lürssen, said in a statement. “However, we believe that with our technical expertise, we have fulfilled the owner’s wish and vision for a yacht that will still be timeless and ahead of its time for many years to come.”

The best part? Kismet will be available for the 2024 charter season for €3 million (roughly $3.3 million) a week. Contact the Cecil Wright team for more information on availability, charter rates, and cruising locations.

Trump's new attack on Project 2025 leaves his far-right friends 'disappointed' in him

Trump's new attack on Project 2025 leaves his far-right friends 'disappointed' in him

Donald Trump's latest effort to distance himself from the controversial Project 2025 has left the former president's conservative allies reeling.

Trump on Saturday held a rally in Michigan, during which he broached the subject of the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025, which is run by many of Trump's allies and those who worked in his administration.

In his speech, Trump called the plan to overhaul the executive and judicial branches with MAGA loyalists a "seriously extreme" vision for the country. In the past, he merely said that some of its policies went too far and that he didn't know much about it.

ALSO READ: How much access did $50,000 buy someone at the Republican National Convention?

Trump changed his tune over the weekend, saying, "Like some on the right, the severe right, came up with this Project 2025 and I don't even know - some of them I know who they are - but they are very, very conservative...Just like you have, they are sort of the opposite of the radical left. You have the radical left and you have the radical right."

But this left some conservatives, including a Republican senator ally, scratching their heads.

Trump-aligned U.S. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) chimed in, "I’m not sure what he’s referring to."

"But I suspect he’s reacting not to Project 2025," Lee added. "But to progressive Democrats’ unfair characterization of Project 2025."

Commenters didn't let Lee get away with that.

@dudeodnv replied that Trump " said some of the policies in project 2025 are radical and crazy."

"He said some of the people are radical right just like radical left," he added. "I watched it and heard it."

Bob Good for Congress asked, "What exactly is 'extreme' about Project 2025?"

"Some of the best conservative minds in the country are responsible for the great work that is Project 2025," the account wrote Saturday.

The attack by Trump also angered Nicholas J. Fuentes , the neo-Nazi figure with ties to the ex-president.

"Trump disavows Project 2025 for the FOURTH time and says it was written by extremist, 'severe,' radical conservatives who are just like the radical Left," he wrote Saturday. "This is not going to be a Right Wing government."

@scksgrypr replied that the move was, "Disappointing but not surprising."

Should trump be allowed to run for office, trump vs. harris will seem compressed. but it’s the norm elsewhere..

As news broke that President Joe Biden would exit the 2024 presidential election, Republicans cried foul.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) criticized Biden’s decision to step down, claiming the Democrats might “run into legal impediments” if Biden isn’t at the top of the ticket. On ABC, he said : “It would be wrong, and I think unlawful, in accordance to some of these states’ rules, for a handful of people to go in a back room and switch it out because they don’t like the candidate any longer. That’s not how this is supposed to work.”

HuffPost pointed out that Johnson failed to cite a legal doctrine to back this up.

And so far, there’s not much of a legal case to be made by Republicans, as Biden had not been officially selected as the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee.

There doesn’t seem to be anything in the U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 1 , concerning presidential elections, that is violated by Biden stepping aside. There’s nothing in the 12 th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would make this illegal, either.

States have also not printed their ballots on which presidential candidates’ names will appear. Antonio Fins with the Palm Beach Post, as posted on Yahoo , noted that Florida has its primary for non-presidential races on Aug. 20. Several other states similarly conduct their non-presidential primaries in August or September, according to the Federal Election Commission .

This means that general election ballots simply cannot be printed for many more weeks, as those states don’t yet know who will have qualified for their general elections.

This unexpectedly shorter presidential election season — at least between the two new opponents in Donald Trump and Kamala Harris — may seem strange, even unmooring to many Americans, particularly for anyone who’s of a Generation X, millennial or Generation Z vintage.

But, in fact, the 2024 U.S. presidential election appears destined to in part resemble American presidential elections before the 1970s, when national nominating conventions were more than made-for-television formalities, where a party’s “presumptive” nominee had — for better or for worse — not been determined weeks or months earlier.

Before the modern nomination process began in 1972, when statewide electoral contests began to eclipse state conventions as the “primary” means of selecting delegates, candidates were selected at national party conventions.

Starting in 1856, the first year there was both a Republican and a Democratic Party in the same election cycle, there have been 86 national party conventions held or about to be held.

ALSO READ: Milwaukee girded for massive convention protests. But they got something else .

Over the years, only three of these party conventions took place in May. Thirty have been conducted in June, 29 in July, 21 in August and three in September.

For conventions in August and September, late in the game, Republicans outnumber Democrats for holding these August and September meetings, 13-11. This year’s Democratic Party convention in Chicago, scheduled to begin Aug. 19, would be within these normal time limits.

With the Trump vs. Harris matchup beginning just 106 days removed from Election Day on Nov. 5, the United States will also walk a small step closer to other advanced democracies, which tend to have shorter election seasons.

I analyzed the most recent presidential and parliamentary elections of 20 different advanced democracies from Europe, North America, Asia, Oceania and the Middle East. These countries include France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Greece, Belgium, Ireland, Denmark, Portugal, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Israel, Poland, the Czech Republic, Australia and Austria.

The average number of days for an election is 75.8 days.

If Biden’s replacement is formally chosen on Aug. 22, 2024, the final day of the Democratic National Convention, it will be 75 days until the election.

When Speaker Johnson claims, “That’s not how this is supposed to work,” what is happening in 2024 is a different process than the endless election cycles that have recently dominated the American process that often exhaust the average American voter.

That does not make it illegal.

HuffPost reports that the Heritage Foundation, behind Project 2025, which Donald Trump both has never heard of and also manages to strongly disagree with , will likely be filing lawsuits in several states over the change in candidates.

Sadly, filing endless litigation over elections does seem to be a more disturbing trend in modern presidential elections in America.

But from a constitutional standpoint, as well as an historical one, little seems to stand in the way of a Trump-Harris presidential race — quick as it may be by modern political standards.

Morning Joe mocks Trump for 'freaking out and going crazy' after Biden drops out

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough ridiculed Donald Trump and other Republicans for "freaking out" about the prospect of facing Vice President Kamala Harris instead of President Joe Biden.

The 81-year-old president dropped his re-election bid Sunday under pressure following his weak debate performance and endorsed his vice president, and the "Morning Joe" host said that decision upended the GOP's election strategy. He added it seemed to catch Trump off guard.

"There is a shot of Capitol Hill where Washington is in shock this morning," Scarborough said. "An earthquake, a tornado, a tsunami of change. I don't know, what should we say?

"All right, I will tell you, there's some Republicans in there freaking out. I mean, you know, here's the thing, like, if the other side is freaking out and going crazy, you know you've got them where you want them. Democrats have to be feeling pretty good this morning. I had heard from inside the Trump campaign for some time right now that the one thing Donald Trump feared was not having Joe Biden."

Scarborough compared the dynamic to a boxer who has trained and prepared to face a right-handed opponent, and then steps into the ring to find a southpaw.

"This was the one thing that sort of had him melting down," Scarborough said. "Most people say that over the last month, he's been more serene than usual, since the trial, he's been a little calmer than usual. But the one thing that got to him was the idea he might not be running against Biden.

"That's all he's been focused on since 2020. Now you're hearing [House Speaker] Mike Johnson, all these other people freaking – ' This is illegal, you can't do this, you can't decide at a convention who your nominee is going to be! You cannot, you cannot let the delegates decide.' Well, yeah, you can. You can decide at the convention who your – it is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard in my life."

"But, again, the fact they're freaking out so much has to excite a Democratic Party that was really at its lowest ebb of any party I've seen since, let's say Watergate," Scarborough added.

Open convention or Harris 'coronation'? Democrats weigh options after Biden exit

Vice President Kamala Harris quickly racked up endorsements from major Democratic figures—including President Joe Biden—and received the backing of deep-pocketed party donors on Sunday after the incumbent exited the 2024 contest in the face of insurmountable pressure.

But while much of the party coalesced around the vice president and argued she's the obvious choice to take on Republican nominee Donald Trump in November, some Democrats and commentators made the case for a competitive nominating process, contending that it would strengthen the eventual candidate and avoid the appearance of an undemocratic "coronation."

Former President Barack Obama was the most prominent Democrat to hint at support for something resembling an open convention , saying in a statement that he has "extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges."

Prior to Biden's exit, dozens of former Democratic lawmakers endorsed an open convention, writing in an open letter that the process would "energize the party and capture the imagination and interest of voters—especially younger and marginalized voters—who have been uninspired by the choices so far."

"I am for an open convention—huge media coverage leading up and during—knock the Trump campaign off kilter and off the air!" former Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), one of the letter's signatories, wrote in a social media post on Sunday.

Opponents of an open convention, meanwhile, argued such a process would be chaotic, divisive, and inherently damaging to the party's prospects.

"Democrats have a choice to make: unite and win, or fight each other and lose," said Birmingham, Alabama Mayor Randall Woodfin.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and other progressives in Congress also made the case for rallying behind Harris rather than leaving the door open to potential Democratic challengers and requiring Harris to win the nomination at the party's convention in Chicago next month.

"Kamala Harris will be the next president of the United States. I pledge my full support to ensure her victory in November," Ocasio-Cortez wrote on social media. "Now more than ever, it is crucial that our party and country swiftly unite to defeat Donald Trump and the threat to American democracy. Let's get to work."

It's unclear whether any viable challenger would emerge should Democrats opt for an open convention, but Harris herself said after Biden dropped his reelection bid that her "intention is to earn and win this nomination."

Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia is reportedly considering re-registering as a Democrat to compete for the nomination—a bid that would be doomed to fail given that he's reviled by the Democratic Party's progressive wing and much of the establishment for obstructing significant elements of Biden's legislative agenda.

NOTUS reported Sunday that "a small group of Democratic leaders are seen as having the credibility and resources to challenge for the nomination," including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

According to The New York Times , some Democrats privately "argued that a more competitive process would benefit Ms. Harris because it could dispel doubts about her political skills." Notably, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) were not among the Democratic lawmakers who endorsed Harris on Sunday.

Drop Site 's Ryan Grim observed Sunday that "the conventional wisdom is that an open convention is simply never going to happen, and if it does it will be a disaster for Democrats—weeks of infighting and chaos that'll drag the party down."

"But that argument is merely a mix of assumption and assertion," Grim wrote. "With a little imagination, that chaos could be turned toward the party's advantage at a time when it's desperately needed. The argument for coronating Kamala Harris doesn't consider how it would look for a party that is in the grip of a legitimacy crisis—Democratic elites were the last in the country to acknowledge Biden's frailty—to foist a new nominee on the public."

"If Kamala Harris wants the nomination, and wants it to be worth anything, she has to at least show that she fought for it and won it cleanly," he added. "And the only way to do that is at an open convention."

The Democratic National Committee's (DNC) rules panel is set to meet this week to "implement a framework to select a new nominee," as The Wall Street Journal reported . The panel's co-chairs, according to the Journal , vowed the process would be "comprehensive, fair, and expeditious."

Before Biden's exit, the DNC was planning to hold a virtual roll call vote early next month to cement the incumbent president as the Democratic nominee weeks before the party's convention in Chicago.

It's unclear whether the DNC plans to move ahead with a virtual vote.

"While an open convention would undoubtedly be entertaining to watch, I doubt we'll see that," said Dan Tokaji, an election law expert at the the University of Wisconsin Law School. "It's possible that delegates will vote to nominate Harris before the convention even begins."

Project 2025’s Plan to Eliminate Public Schools Has Already Started

SCHOOL BUS IN LANDGROVE, VERMONT

P roject 2025, the policy agenda for Former President Trump’s potential first year back in the White House published by the far right conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation, has been making waves recently. Some of the many destructive proposals within the agenda include the elimination of the U.S. Department of Education —along with federal education funding and any civil rights protections—and the diversion of public money to private school voucher programs instead.

Make no mistake: The goal is to end public education. But dismantling our public schools isn’t just the plan if Trump is reelected—it is already happening.

We are on the brink of a new wave of public school closures , another step in the decades-long project to divest and dismantle the institution of public school. Disguised as “school choice,” federal, state, local, and private actors have prioritized paying for  private and charter schools, hoarding educational resources for the haves and depleting resources for the have-nots.

The policies that Project 2025 plans to prioritize—government payments to families sending their children to private school and creation of new charter schools that are run like businesses—have expanded in the last few years, starving public school districts that serve all students of already insufficient resources. In the 2023-24 school year, at least 70 school districts, including in San Antonio, Texas , Jackson, Mississippi , and Wichita, Kansas , announced permanent closures of public schools, impacting millions of students. These districts are resorting to the harmful, discriminatory, and ineffective so-called ‘solution’ of closing schools in Black and Latine communities, stripping those communities of their local public schools.

Read More: Everything Biden and Trump Have Said About the Controversial Project 2025

Here’s how it works: Concerned about shrinking enrollments and budget crises, district leaders conclude that they must close schools, often without any evidence or analysis that it would save money—and, indeed, it hasn’t been shown to save money unless coupled with mass layoffs. They hire consultants who come up with “utilization” rates and then recommend closing schools with the lowest rates to “rightsize” the district—their euphemism for their misguided belief that school facility usage should be guided by arbitrary numbers instead of meeting communities where they are.

The problem is that “utilization”—a school’s enrollment over its supposed capacity—is stacked against schools that have experienced historic underfunding and disinvestment in facilities repairs, curricula, extracurricular opportunities, and staff. These same schools disproportionately serve Black and Latine students, English Learner students, students with disabilities, and students living in poverty.

Closing schools is demonstrably harmful—and has real-life impact. Research on the mass urban school closures from 2012 to 2014 overwhelmingly found that academic outcomes suffered , particularly for low-performing students. A May 2024 study from Brown University linked the experience of a school closure to “decreases in post-secondary education attainment, employment, and earnings at ages 25–27.” Additionally, closures force families to travel farther to get to schools that are not in their communities, making it harder to form relationships with staff, join extracurriculars, or get involved in parent organizations.

These communities are also often the first to lose access to the benefits of neighborhood public schools, which act as essential gathering places for social services and community resources like adult education, polling locations, a place to hold community meetings, and access to democratic community control through school board elections.

There are more equitable and educationally sound approaches than the lazy, unjust, self-sabotaging—and all too common—approach of spending money on consultants to tell districts what they have already decided to do: close the schools they value least, relying on metrics that target symptoms of their systemic neglect, and playing into the conservative agenda to make public schools obsolete.

Districts have better options to address budget woes. They can start a community-driven process to reshape the budget, wherein multiple stakeholders—rather than a selected few—play an active role in setting district budget priorities. Districts can also employ community-led assessments of how they use buildings, allowing school communities, particularly those historically marginalized, to request the resources, support, and spaces they need.

At the very least, districts should integrate equity requirements into school closure proposals, for instance, by incorporating community-based equity audits into decision-making. States can also follow California’s lead by requiring and robustly enforcing equity safeguards for any decisions to close schools.

Young people and their communities deserve better than districts repeatedly making the same mistakes. District leaders must stop listening to expensive consultants and closing much-loved and needed schools, and instead, must listen to the communities they serve and focus on solutions that put students first. Local, state and federal governments must fully and equitably fund public schools—schools obligated to take and educate everyone—and stop diverting money to a system of charter and private schools where students and families are forced to compete for a limited pool of high quality resources for a select few.

Project 2025 is not an inevitability—it is a call to action for anyone who cares about public education in this country. Our public school system requires more resources to create better school environments for everyone. We need investment in our public schools—not closures.

The newest addition to the prestigious Lürssen fleet has just been launched from their Bremen facilities in Germany. The majestic 146m (479ft) superyacht OPERA was unveiled this morning, where onlookers were wowed by her vast proportions.

As ever, details about this Lürssen superyacht remain shrouded in secrecy. Her exterior styling comes from the boards of Terence Disdale Design, featuring elegant lines and floor-to-ceiling windows to maximise natural light and create wide vistas to provide a harmonious balance with her surroundings.

Launch of superyacht OPERA

Throughout the build the megayacht’s specifications and amenities have been kept a closely guarded secret, but pictures reveal she will have a helipad on the foredeck, as well as a large main deck swimming pool and expansive beach club.

It is expected that her delivery will take place in early 2023, although it is not expected that motor yacht OPERA will be available for charter upon delivery. To discover Lürssen vessels that are currently for rental, take a look at the range of Lürssen yachts available to charter .

project hype-r yacht by davide benaglia has a dance floor, cinema and beach area on board

Disco on board davide benaglia’s project hype-r yacht.

Designer Davide Benaglia comes up with a yacht design that has a modular beach area. The owner can transform this place on board the Project Hype-r into a cinema deck, a dance floor for disco parties, or both, depending on the spacing. It’s a layout that the designer has planned for his young, dynamic, and digitally native client. He gives each space a specific function. It allows for transitions between entertainment and relaxation, two themes that the modern young yacht owner seems to be looking for.

Already on board, the upper deck may be an extension of the beach area on the lower deck. A sunset lounge area awaits the guests here, ideal for watching the horizon before the dawn of the night, or just enjoying the last rays before the party begins. Drinks in hand and some unwinding moments are how Davide Benaglia pictures the function of the space. It somewhat complements the sundeck nearby, which, as opposed to the common areas, is a nook entirely for the owner.

A secluded retreat on the yacht’s sundeck

For Project Hype-r’s sundeck, Davide Benaglia puts a private study and some living areas into place. They can help provide a secluded retreat to the owner, who may want a few moments on their own. It’s also here that they can view the open sea. Relaxation is a theme that runs its course throughout the interior of the yacht. Soft and modern palettes find their home through the walls, furnishings, and object pieces within Project Hype-r.

The designer , who specialized in yacht design with a Master’s degree from the Politecnico di Milano, even dolls up the area with a fireplace. Here, the guests can cozy and warm themselves up in times of cold seasons. The yacht’s exterior design is minimal, as if contrasting the modern interiors. Sleek lines and hush-down colors suit up the sides of Project Hype-r. The gray tone slopes when it arrives at the rear of the yacht, forming wave-like imagery that may hark back to the movement of the sea. As of publishing the story, Davide Benaglia has yet to announce the production of the Project Hype-r yacht for the client.

Farmers, Rural Businesses To Harvest Benefits of New Project Selections

Competitiveness improvement project awards tap distributed wind energy’s potential in agricultural settings.

Aerial view of a small wind turbine next to a farm

A new crop of Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP) award selections will benefit farmers and small rural businesses by focusing on how to remove market barriers to distributed wind turbine deployment in agricultural settings.

Through CIP, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced plans to award $3.2 million to 12 American component suppliers and manufacturers of small- and medium-sized wind turbines for 13 new projects. Targeting rural agriculture markets, the 2024 CIP selections support the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and DOE’s new Rural and Agricultural Income & Savings from Renewable Energy (RAISE) initiative , which supports distributed wind as part of the White House’s clean energy goals.

Managed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) on behalf of DOE’s Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO) since 2012, CIP is designed to make distributed wind energy technologies more cost competitive, reliable, grid compatible, and accessible. In addition, CIP projects advance innovations that enable distributed wind energy technologies to be used in emerging distributed generation markets.

“By funding the development of wind energy technologies that increase cost savings and revenue-generation opportunities for rural small businesses and farmers, CIP is helping tap the potential for distributed wind energy within America’s agricultural communities,” said Brent Summerville, NREL distributed wind energy researcher and CIP program lead. Distributed wind energy is used at or near where it is generated.

According to NREL’s 2022 Distributed Wind Futures Study , the United States has the potential to profitably deploy nearly 1,400 gigawatts of distributed wind energy capacity—more than half the nation’s current annual electricity consumption. Agricultural lands in the Midwest and heartland make up 70% of this potential.

“CIP advances distributed wind technology to ensure that distributed energy consumers have options that are certified for performance and quality,” Summerville said. “CIP also strengthens distributed wind technology commercialization, market expansion, and deployment while supporting partnerships among distributed wind developers, farm groups, and agribusinesses.”

2024 Project Selections Focus on Farmers, Small Agricultural Businesses

Companies selected to receive 2024 CIP awards will now enter negotiations with NREL to receive cost-shared subcontracts and technical support. Selected companies include several former CIP awardees and some that are new to the program: A manufacturer of a 1-megawatt (MW) wind turbine (the largest turbine that can qualify for CIP funding), a vertical-axis wind turbine manufacturer, and an Alaska-based developer.

Once the 2024 contracts are finalized, NREL will have awarded 77 subcontracts to 30 companies, totaling $18.5 million in DOE funding while leveraging $11.2 million in additional private sector investment since CIP began in 2012.

The 2024 award categories and selections are:

Prototype Installation and Testing

Designed to determine the commercial readiness of a prototype wind turbine system, these projects confirm turbine designs or improvements that are ready for certification testing.

  • Accelerate Wind (Birmingham, Alabama) will perform full-scale testing of its 12-kilowatt (kW) prototype rooftop wind turbine.
  • Pecos Wind Power (Somerville, Massachusetts) will perform testing of its 85-kW PW85 prototype turbine.

Small Turbine Certification and Listing

These projects help manufacturers of turbines up to 150-kW peak power pursue certification to ANSI/ACP 101-1-2021: The Small Wind Turbine Standard or listing of the turbine assembly or component(s) to applicable electrical safety standards.

  • NPS Solutions (Darien, Connecticut) will pursue certification of the NPS 100C-24-37 turbine to the ACP 101-1-2021 standard and list the system to UL 6141.
  • Sonsight Wind (Grayson, Georgia) will pursue certification of its 3.5-kW turbine to the ACP 101-1-2021 standard and list the generator, controller, and diversion load to electrical safety standards.
  • Uprise Energy (San Diego, California) will pursue certification of its 10-kW deployable turbine system to the ACP 101-1-2021 standard and list the system to UL 6142.

Type Certification and Listing

These projects help manufacturers of turbines up to 1-MW rated power seek type certification through the International Electrotechnical Commission System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Renewable Energy Applications (IECRE) or list turbine assembly or component(s) to applicable electrical safety standards.

  • Chava Wind (Homestead, Florida) will pursue IECRE type certification of its 21-kW vertical-axis wind turbine.

Inverter Listing

These projects address the need for listed inverters built and tested specifically for small- and medium-scale wind turbines.

  • Eocycle America Corporation  (Swanton, Vermont) will pursue the listing of its EOS S-16 turbine to UL 1741-SB.
  • EWT Americas (Bloomington, Minnesota) will pursue the listing of its 1-MW inverter to UL 1741-SB.
  • Windurance LLC (Coraopolis, Pennsylvania) will upgrade its 90-kW inverter to a 120-kW rating and pursue UL 1741-SB listing.

Manufacturing Process Innovation

These projects support designing, building, and validating improved manufacturing processes for a defined production of a wind turbine, leading to a reduced levelized cost of energy.

  • Bergey Windpower Company (Norman, Oklahoma) will implement advanced blade manufacturing processes to reduce costs and help meet growing demand.

Product Commercialization and Market Development

Focused specifically on rural and agricultural market opportunities identified in NREL’s 2022 Distributed Wind Futures Study , these projects address cost barriers to commercialization and rapid, large-scale deployment of improved distributed wind energy technology.

  • EWT Americas (Bloomington, Minnesota) plans to educate customers on wind turbine potential for agribusiness, commercial, and industrial operations in the windy Midwest.
  • Intelligent Energy Systems (Anchorage, Alaska) plans to address obstacles to distributed wind investment in Alaska.
  • Siva Powers America (East Amherst, New York) will address deployment obstacles in eight key states, accessing rural markets using both the USDA Rural Energy for America Program and the Inflation Reduction Act Energy Community Tax Credit Bonus.

“Commercialization efforts by Siva Powers America, EWT Americas, and Intelligent Energy Systems, in addition to active CIP projects by Bergey Windpower and Eocycle, will open new markets for distributed wind turbines and help support the RAISE initiative goals for rural small businesses and farmers,” Summerville said.

‘Finish the Job’ Is a Terrible Slogan

Set against a clear blue sky, a yellow traffic sign says: question mark ahead.

By Pamela Paul

Opinion Columnist

As far as campaign slogans go, President Biden’s oft-repeated phrase “Finish the job” isn’t exactly galvanizing. “Finish the job” is a patient gardener determinedly clipping away at that final hedge. It’s an accountant hunched over the last page of his trusty ledger.

It looks backward rather than forward.

And this isn’t 2020. The domestic and global situation Biden inherited from the Trump administration has changed radically, with significant economic, technological, environmental and global political developments that are only accelerating. Biden continues to say “We need to do more,” but what he hasn’t said is more what .

Biden’s first term has seen significant achievements on climate, the economy and infrastructure. But tying up loose ends on Biden’s first term isn’t enough to rouse Democrats, independents and Never Trump Republicans, regardless of whether Biden is the party’s candidate.

What the Democratic Party needs is its own version of Project 2025 , the nearly 900-page blueprint put forth by the Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank whose stated goal is “ institutionalizing Trumpism .” A tighter and brighter version that gets Democrats off their back feet and articulates goals that go beyond defeating Trumpism.

Such a plan would address issues meaningful to all Americans — but especially to those Americans who don’t see the powerful impact government can have on their safety, economic security, families and futures. One that offers some Obama-era optimism, that lapsed sense that the country was moving in the right direction and the government exists to serve us.

According to a 2024 Pew survey , Americans’ top policy priorities are “strengthening the economy,” “defending against terrorism,” “reducing the influence of money in politics,” “reducing health care costs,” “improving education,” “making social security financially sound,” “dealing with immigration” and “reducing the availability of illegal drugs.”

What are the Democratic Party’s big, bold plans to address those concerns going into the next election? On the campaign trail thus far, we’ve heard remarkably little about short- or long-term plans for any of these challenges. Instead, we’ve heard about the need to make more people — not just the wealthy and the donor set — feel the effects of policies the Biden administration has already enacted.

But it’s not enough. Low unemployment rates aren’t meaningful when too many Americans earn abysmal wages, some working multiple jobs with low security just to get by. How meaningful is a booming economy when prices remain high and steep interest rates make it even harder to afford a home? And what plans do we have for homeless people beyond sweeping them off the streets?

There’s also the sorry state of the home we all share. When you combine the desires to “improve the energy system,” “protect the environment” and “deal with climate change,” the environment, broadly speaking, ranks high in that same Pew poll. Yet the environment was hardly mentioned during the first presidential debate.

Incremental changes to large-scale problems aren’t enough. We need big, innovative ideas to build a fairer and more equitable system. At a time of appalling income inequality, tax rates remain low for wealthy Americans and large corporations. When it comes to bettering the world, billionaires and private foundations dictate the agenda far more than a government intended to represent the public interest.

Last week’s assassination attempt is only the latest manifestation of our country’s galling record on gun violence. At his most recent news conference, President Biden had a good line with “ Control guns, not girls .” But we need more than T-shirt slogans. We need a real plan to end gun violence — and no doubt, Americans’ professed desire to reduce the influence of money in politics reflects a desire to reduce the influence of the gun lobby , along with the paralyzing grip of the pharmaceutical industry, Big Tech, oil and gas, and insurance.

Curbing the influence of those industries while passing legislation to streamline and bolster the federal government’s key regulatory agencies — the F.D.A., the I.R.S., the F.T.C., the E.P.A. — would go a long way toward prioritizing the needs of citizens over corporations.

Then there are the issues that don’t necessarily rank high in polls, but which are critical to the country’s health. Too many of these challenges have simply fallen off the public’s radar and conscience, perhaps a reflection of a lack of trust and hope in the government to attend to the country’s biggest and most intractable problems.

One out of every five prisoners in the world lives in this country, according to a 2020 analysis by the Prison Policy Initiative. Nearly one in 100 Americans is in prison or jail, with many more juveniles and adults caught up in a dysfunctional, punitive and discriminatory justice system. When was the last time Democrats proposed a comprehensive plan for prison reform, recidivism reduction and re-entry programs? Small, local and private efforts can never have the reach or impact of a powerful federal initiative. We all pay for the ideological skew of our justice system.

We also need better ideas around education, from early childhood to the public school system, from vocational schools to community colleges. The best public universities should be tuition-free, well funded and focused not merely on training employees but also on educating citizens. We talk a lot about young people who feel overwhelmingly anxious, stressed, helpless and pessimistic. We’ve told them all about what to fear. But what reason have we given them to feel empowered and optimistic?

There is a lot more that could be added to this list, which doesn’t even touch on foreign policy. And Democrats will of course quibble over the particulars of what a blueprint for 2025 and beyond will look like. But without laying out ambitious ideas we have nothing to look forward to other than defeating Trumpism. The motivation there is fear of what could happen rather than enthusiasm for what should happen. To get the electorate excited about a Democratic future requires more than that.

AirYacht reveals radical 52m airship-yacht crossover concept

Flying yachts, once the stuff of our wildest, most outlandish dreams, are slowly inching closer to a reality. As the industry prepares for the 2022 Superyacht Design Festival , BOAT catches up with  Guillaume Hoddé, co-founder of AirYacht, and Franck Darnet, the yacht's designer, to learn more about an exciting concept that's set to take to the skies in 2026...

Swiss company AirYacht has unveiled a radical new concept that marries the flying power of an airship with the luxury amenities of a superyacht.

Capable of flying between 100 to 3,000 metres above the ground with an autonomous cruising time of around one week, the AirYacht's groundbreaking design is composed of two separate modules: a 200-metre helium-filled airship attached to an ultra-lightweight all-carbon 52-metre superyacht residence.

The three-storey residence can be landed in its entirety or it can deploy a 12-person elevator to allow guests to disembark for a quick stopover.

Each module has its own complement of crew - the airship will have a crew of three and the residence will have a crew of 12.

The AirYacht is the brainchild of Guillaume Hoddé and Matthieu Ozanne, who founded the company in 2017 and enlisted the design expertise of Franck Darnet , who most recently worked on the exteriors of 63.8 metre Atomic . Born in Nantes and immersed in the world of Vendée Globe racing boats, Darnet has a masterful knowledge of "weight performance" technology that makes him uniquely suited to the challenges of airborne yachts.

The residence will have the same layout as a superyacht, with three decks, 750 square metres of indoor space and amenities including a gym, sauna, swimming pool and touch and go helipad.

Accommodation is provided for between ten and 12 guests in a five or six-cabin layout. Terraces, which can be used while the AirYacht is both underway and stationary, flank the starboard and port sides and there is an additional 120 square metre terrace-style lounge on the aft.

Aerodynamic shape and low weight are crucial to the design of the AirYacht. In order to keep the vessel as lightweight as possible, the residence component won’t be fitted with engines.

This creates additional space and increased flexibility to tailor the interior layout, while also allowing the residence to be built at AirYachts’ own facility without the need for a shoreside shipyard. When the residence is detached and on water, it will be towed by its tenders.

The AirYacht aims to give passengers the freedom to roam anywhere in the world, from lakes and seas to deserts and mountains. “On a normal superyacht you have to stay at sea. You can’t cross a hill or a mountain,” said Franck Darnet. “Most of the beautiful things that you see on our planet - some of them are next to the shore [...] but a lot of them are inland.”

In order to conceptualise the residence, Darnet had to rethink various different aspects of design. To this end, the crew quarters are in the forward upper part of the residence - in the section that ‘plugs’ into the airship - in order to give the crew to access the airship module.

The AirYacht also features large sections of glazing in the hull that allows passengers to look down, “because the most spectacular things that exist when you are flying are on the floor,” said Darnet.

While the AirYacht will be able to fly at dizzying heights of around 3,000 metres, the vessel is designed to cruise at heights of between 100 and 200 metres to allow for crystal-clear views of the world unfolding below.

The AirYacht will require ‘early adopters’ for it to take off - both literally and figuratively. “This isn’t a new ship, or a new yacht or new plane. This is a completely new thing,” said Guillaume Hoddé, co-founder of AirYacht. ‘New concept, new design. It’s like a dream.”

Currently, the AirYacht is powered by hybrid technology. “In ten years, we hope to have a full hydrogen version,” added Hoddé.

The first AirYacht will be able to achieve top speeds of 50 knots and the first unit is due for completion in 2026.

Guillaume Hoddé will be attending the 2022 Superyacht Design Festival to shed more light on the AirYacht and discuss the future of flying-focused yacht designs. The event will be held in Milan from 22-24 June. Tickets are still available to purchase .

What would Project 2025 do for education: Why the conservative plan may not sound new in Tennessee

Portrait of Areena Arora

Project 2025 is touted as a conservative plan for the first six months of a potential second Donald Trump administration. The over-900 page "Mandate for Leadership" also lays out plans for the state of education, but to Tennesseans the plans may not be too unfamiliar.

Among other things, the plan calls for an elimination of federal education policy and endorses school choice in line with Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee's recent education-related proposals. At the Republican National Convention July 16, Lee called school choice the "civil rights issue of our time," bringing his signature issue - school vouchers - to a national audience.

The plan for education is written by Lindsey Burke , director of the Center for Education Policy at the Heritage Foundation.

What does Project 2025 say on education?

Here are some highlights on what the plan says about K-12 education and how it's in line with what Tennessee lawmakers either endorsed or made laws on already.

What is Project 2025? Is it Trump's plan What to know about the right-wing plan for a conservative nation

Project 2025 promotes school choice by way of vouchers

The plan states "... every parent should have the option to direct his or her child’s share of education funding through an education savings account."

This is in line with legislation pushed by Lee for Tennesseans though his signature proposal for a  statewide school voucher program . The legislation failed this year over vast differences between dueling Senate and House versions, in addition to significant pushback from local public school stakeholders across the state.

Additionally, the plan also calls for lessening federal restrictions on charter schools.

More freedom to states and a rejection of federal funding

The document calls for removal of "red tape from Washington" endorsing policymaking and funding at the state and local level "closest to the affected families." It also calls for federal Title I funding, reserved for low-income schools, to be administered with no strings attached.

This too, is in line with Republican leadership in Tennessee.

Last year , legislative leaders appointed a 10-member panel to determine whether the state can reject nearly $1.9 billion a year in federal funding for K-12 education and make up the difference in state money.

Lee also denounced the federal government’s "excessive overreach" as he expressed support for the move.

On critical race theory and 'gender ideology'

The nationwide plan calls for an enforcement of civil rights "based on a proper understanding of those laws" and a rejection of "gender ideology and critical race theory," in line again with Tennessee.

This directive is at least three-years too late for Tennessee legislators who in 2021 banned public schools from teaching critical race theory.

A need to improve math and reading scores

Quoting data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, NAEP, the plan calls for a reform to correct countrywide "academic stagnation" by way of improving math and reading scores.

In 2021, the state legislature passed a law requiring third graders who score less than "met" or "exceeded expectations" on TN Ready tests to attend a summer reading camp or tutoring program, or repeat the grade. The controversial law commonly referred to as "third grade reading and retention law" went into effect in the 2022-2023 school year.

But, this law isn't unique to Tennessee. In the wake of the pandemic, dozens of other states also enacted retention laws, including a slew of new efforts to address learning loss during the coronavirus pandemic.

Transforming Title IX

The plan calls for the new presidential administration to commence a new agency process to rescind the current Title IX regulations and "define sex under Title IX to mean only biological sex recognized at birth."

"The next administration should move quickly to restore the rights of women and girls and restore due process protections for accused individuals," the document states.

Tennessee joined five other states to sue the U.S. Department of Education to fight new Title IX rules that include protections for LGBTQ+ students, saying they upend women's rights and put students, families and schools in harm's way.

Tennessee passed a law in 2021 barring transgender students in middle and high schools from playing on sports teams that match their gender identities. Tennessee also has a 2021 law in place banning transgender students and faculty from accessing bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with their gender identity. A lawsuit, backed by the Human Rights Campaign, is ongoing and set for trial in 2025.

On special education related reforms

Similar to the view on other federal funding, the plan calls for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act funding to be converted into a "no-strings formula" distributed locally without federal oversight.

A recent report from the Tennessee Disability Coalition blamed state policymakers for setting priorities and adopting policies that are increasingly punishing and excluding special education students.

The criticisms come after Tennessee enacted a string of increasingly stringent laws aimed at tightening discipline in the classroom — from the  2021 Teacher’s Discipline Act  empowering teachers to remove chronically unruly students to a  2024 law requiring a one-year suspension  for students who assault teachers at school. Such policies, the report said, disproportionately affect students with disabilities, particularly those with behavioral issues.

Who is behind Project 2025?

The  Heritage Foundation , a conservative think tank and a sponsor of the  Republican  National  Convention is the group behind the 2025 Presidential Transition Project, popularly known as Project 2025 .

It was founded in 1973 during Richard Nixon’s administration and since then has exerted a strong influence over Republican policy.

What else do I need to know about Project 2025?

The plan outlines conservative agendas that would mean the repeal of parts of initiatives President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama brought forth during their tenure at the White House, including student debt forgiveness and the Affordable Care Act. Beyond that, the  deportation of undocumented immigrants  is high up on Project 2025's to-do list.

There is also a section of this plan that appears to undo LGBTQ+ rights in multiple different areas, including banning people with HIV or those who are transgender from serving in the military,  rescinding regulations  that bar discrimination “on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, transgender status, and sex characteristics,” and also seems to oppose same-sex marriage and gay couples adopting children by seeking to "maintain a biblically based, social science-reinforced definition of marriage and family."

For many it has become a hot topic among celebrities, political figures, media and on social media in recent weeks.

Is Project 2025 part of Trump's plan if he wins the 2024 presidential election?

Though the plan's organizers want Trump to follow Project 2025 if he wins the November election ― it even has his name in different areas throughout the plan ― the businessman turned politician has tried to distance himself from the Heritage Foundation after Biden slammed him in the press for being affiliated with the group.

Trump took to his Truth social media account in an attempt to lead the narrative away from his affiliation with Heritage Foundation writing: "I know nothing about Project 2025. I have no idea who is behind it. I disagree with some of the things they’re saying and some of the things they’re saying are absolutely ridiculous and abysmal. Anything they do, I wish them luck, but I have nothing to do with them."
