The Yacht – The Meaning and the Origin of the Word

In my language there are a few words for a floating object, or a vessel. According to the size and the purpose of the vessel, those words could be translated as “dinghy”, “yacht”, “boat” or “ship”. Some types of vessels have international names, for example “catamaran” or “hovercraft”.

What Does Yacht Mean?

However, when you say “ yacht” in my language, everyone know exactly what it is about. The word “yacht”, unlike other terms, has certain connotations. It always links with something classy, fancy, wealthy, elegant, and even glamorous.

For example, if you say that you have spent a week aboard a sailing boat , the recations of people will be more or less neutral. On the other hand, if you say that your week aboard a yacht was excellent, many people will become jealous. They will imagine you in a scene from a James Bond movie : aboard a massive white yacht in Monte Carlo , having a cold martini (shaken, not stirred)…

I wanted to share with you this language introduction because I found an interesting story about the word “yacht” and its origin. The word “yacht” became an English and an international term after an event that happened a long time ago.

How Do You Spell ‘Yacht’?

This word comes from the Dutch word “jacht”, which means “hunt”. Furthermore, “ j achtschepen” was the name for narrow, light and very fast sailing boats that the Dutchmen were using for intercepting larger and slower boats and ships.

One of the ‘hunters’ was given as a present to the British king Charles II . In His Majesty’s free time this vessel was not used for intercepting. Instead, was using it for fun. That is why the word “yacht” eventually became the term for vessels/boats made for pleasure.

I would highly appreciate comments from the native speakers of the  English and Dutch languages. Especially since I am not one of them. No matter whether this story is true or not, it still sounds interesting to me.

I looked up the origin of the word yacht, and it said it is a mid 16th century, Early Modern Dutch word from ‘jaght,’ from ‘jaghtschip’ meaning “fast pirate ship,” from ‘jaght’ which means “hunting” + ‘schip’ meaning “ship”.

I like the story of King Charles. It makes sense that that is why a yacht has the definite aura of wealth and pleasure!

Almost but not 100%. Actually the verb ‘jagen’ to hunt goes back to middle high German,i.e. Deutsch not Dutch, and before that it was ‘jagon’ in lower high German. But it seems that it all started with Greek and travelled North.

I guess that mid 16th century, the Dutch word jaght or jaghtschip was the word that got picked up. Not the earlier middle high German word where it came from.

Today it is jacht in Dutch, meaning hunting and it also the word for a luxury sailing boat.

In German Jagd is the word for hunt. Germans use the Dutch or English Jacht or Yacht for the boat.

Did the Germans design the original schooners? I think not! Since some Netherlanders speak a form of the Deutschland language, this word is shared (jacht/Dutch—jagd/German: meaning to hunt). It was the Dutch (Netherlanders) who designed the “flyut” or flute sailing ships, l-o-n-g before any British ever thought of such a ship—and—any German. The schooner grew out of the basic designs of the Dutch flute sailing ship (known for it’s speed). The Dutch economy relied heavily on trade and shipping, and were, thus, cutting edge innovators in ship building. Their engineering skills, was and is, plainly seen in their dike system, as well.

My father built a beautiful wooden replica of the”yacht” referred by the author (“Yacht Mary”) which was a present from the city of Amsterdam to King Charles II of England in 1660. They wrecked the ship a few years later (already too much partying on yachts, perhaps?)

I noticed the plaque that came with the model ship spelled the name as “Yatch” Mary. First, I thought, maybe, it was old English or Dutch spelling but it looks like it was just an error.

In my head yogurt used to be spelled yoghurt and yacht used to be spelled yaught. Am I completely mis-remembering?

Dear Margaret, you are quite right for the spelling of the word yogurt that used to be, and sometimes still is, spelled with its old spelling yoghurt. However, there are no traces of the word yacht to have ever been spelled as yaught, but it would be best to take an etymology expert’s word for it.

Celebrities Accused Of 'Yachting' In Hollywood — And What Being A 'Yacht Girl' Really Means

Rumors suggest some women are paid to play..

It’s easy to be envious when seeing the Instagram photos of young, carefree celebrity women seemingly having the time of their lives on yachts floating in exotic waters and in the VIP sections of the most exclusive clubs.

However, rumor has it there is much more than meets the eye when it comes to these ‘yacht girls’ and their extravagant lifestyles.

What is a yacht girl?

According to Urban Dictionary , a yacht girl is “an attractive young woman who finds ways to get access to luxurious surroundings by being available to wealthy men.”

For example, you may follow a woman or two on Instagram who always seems to be partying or vacationing somewhere expensive (notably without ever showing who she’s actually with). This is a person you could potentially describe as being a yacht girl.

And it’s not just those Instagram models and wannabe stars that are considered yacht girls. As you work up the wealth chain, you may be surprised to recognize some celebrity names synonymous with yachting.

What is 'yachting' in Hollywood?

In Hollywood, the term yacht girl essentially means a woman who works as an escort for high-end clientele , not just on yachts but for any social event.

While the practice has only somewhat recently gained mainstream notoriety, if you think back on the many tabloid photos of models and actresses on yachts from years past, it appears to be something that's gone on in Hollywood “for 60 years,” according to Elie Nahas, who ran a Beirut-based modeling agency before being arrested on charges of running a prostitution ring in 2007.

In 2013, "The Hollywood Reporter" ran a feature describing this so-called yachting during the Cannes Film Festival.

“Every year during the festival there are 30 or 40 luxury yachts in the bay at Cannes, and every boat belongs to a very rich person. Every boat has about 10 girls on it; they are usually models, and they are usually nude or half nude,” Nahas told THR.

At the end of the night, each woman would receive a “gift,” a generous amount of money that the client would put in an envelope for her.

And while many of these women were self-proclaimed local prostitutes and escorts, the Cannes Film Festival is, of course, known for its celebrity attendees — and it’s rumored that celebrity women trying to fast-track a name for themselves in Hollywood become yacht girls, too.

“Women installed on yachts in Cannes during the film festival are called ‘yacht girls,’ and the line between professional prostitutes and B- or C-list Hollywood actresses and models who accept payment for sex with rich older men is sometimes very blurred, explains one film industry veteran,” Dana Kennedy wrote for THR.

Some women in Hollywood have accused their celebrity peers of being yacht girls.

A 2017 blind item (celebrity gossip that doesn’t outwardly name the celebrity) allegedly written by a struggling actress describes being lured by another actress into the world of yachting :

“The actress I was talking to made it sound super easy and that she only had [sex] a few times with guys while yachting and that it was mostly partying and being arm candy,” she writes, explaining that eventually she agreed to try it for $25,000 upfront, but admitting that the experience was less than glamorous.

Blind item readers guessed that Canadian actress Vanessa Lengies wrote the blind item and further surmised that it may be one of the Glee actresses Naya Rivera or Heather Morris that introduced her to yachting. None of these claims have ever been substantiated.

If you believe the rumors, it would seem that yachting is a rite of passage for women hoping to “make it” in Hollywood, and even some celebrities we now consider A-List are thought to be former yacht girls.

In an excerpt from her 2021 memoir , “My Body,” Emily Ratajkowski details being paid $25,000 at the start of her career to go to the Superbowl with now-disgraced Malaysian financier Jho Low, who "‘just liked to have famous men and women around,’” she explains her manager told her at the time.

She writes about attending the star-studded Coachella on someone else’s dime, having drinks paid for at clubs, and attending afterparties with Oscar-winning actors before actually becoming a celebrity herself.

One could infer from this recollection that, in order to be able to tell these stories, Ratajkowski was herself a yacht girl. “My Body” suggests as much, and in it, she subtly gives away the identity of another celebrity woman who yachted alongside her.

Ratajkowski describes watching as Low gave shots to a Victoria’s Secret model. While she doesn’t name drop, Ratajkowski gives just enough information for readers to figure who that model likely was.

“Now she kept her eyes locked on him as he took his shot, throwing her head back dramatically as he did, only to quickly toss the alcohol over her shoulder,” Ratajkowski writes. “When he faced her again, her eyes sparkled and the famous dimples appeared on her cheeks.”

Low has since become a fugitive wanted for allegedly running an international money laundering scheme, and in 2017, Reuters reported that model Miranda Kerr — known for her dimples — was being ordered to return “diamond pendants, earrings and other jewelry worth about $8 million” that Low allegedly gifted her to government agents.

In 2017, Ratajkowski also posted a video on Instagram potentially outing Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber as yacht girls as they danced aboard a yacht during that year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Many people have also accused Meghan Markle of yachting (but then again, what haven't people accused Markle of at this point).

People have pointed to an old photo of Markle on a yacht as proof that she’s a former yacht girl.

Another old blind item also suggested the former actress was available to “rent.”

"If you see B actress post scantily clad photos of themselves on Social Media, this is often a Comm to [them] that this person is available to ‘rent’ for a weekend of ‘yachting,’” the tweet says, including a photo of Markle in a swimsuit.

Markle’s close friendship pre-Harry with actress Priyanka Chopra has naturally led some to guess that Chopra once yachted as well.

Another actress that faces endless rumors of yachting is Russian actress Irina Shayk , which according to THR, is par for the course as the outlet writes that yachting your way to stardom happens with “disturbing frequency,” particularly when it comes to foreign-born actresses.

According to THR, who claims to know “of at least one now-prominent actress who made her first connections on a Cannes yacht and quickly landed her debut role in a U.S.-shot movie,” such as with Shayk’s 2014 film “Hercules,” it’s “a red flag any time you see a foreign-born actress with no credits suddenly make her way into a U.S.-shot movie.”

Of course, when it comes to yachting in Hollywood, all of these claims appear to be unfounded.

These rumors make for good gossip, whether you’re talking about low-level social media influencers or high-profile celebrity actresses.

However, nothing is proven, leaving us to wonder any time we see a photo of women on a yacht.

Shannen Doherty Wanted to Move to Italy Before Her Death After 'Bucket List' Trip with Her Doctor

“That was her dream life," Doherty's friend and 'Charmed' costar Holly Marie Combs revealed on the 'House of Halliwell' podcast

Shannen Doherty dreamed of moving to Italy before she died, according to one of her longtime friends.

Holly Marie Combs, Doherty’s Charmed costar, joined fellow cast members Brian Krause and Drew Fuller on their House of Halliwell podcast on Monday, July 22, for a special episode in honor of Doherty.

“I don’t think anyone loved Charmed more than she did, and that’s a fact,” Combs said of Doherty, who died on July 13 at age 53 after fighting stage 4 breast cancer.  “And it’s also a fact that she’s probably laughing at all of us right now being super sad.”

“I mean, there’s a degree of sadness that she does want,” Combs continued. “She wants a proper amount of mourning and crying. But there’s also some parts of it, like, Drew raced back from Italy and she’s definitely laughing at him panicking and getting on a plane for her.”

Combs went on to share that the late actress aspired to live in Italy.

“That was her goal,” she explained. “That was her dream life.  Her next trip was going to be to Italy and she was considering moving to Italy.”

Fuller replied, “I called one of [Doherty’s] best friends and I told her, ‘I’m getting on a plane from Italy right now.’ She goes, ‘You idiot. Shannen’s laughing at you right now. Why are you doing that?’”

The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum previously opened up about checking a trip to the European country off her bucket list.

On the Jan. 1 episode of her Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty podcast, she reflected on having "such a good time" traveling with her friend and oncologist, Dr. Lawrence Piro.

"You invited me on this amazing yacht with your family and I got to go to Italy with you, which was like bucket list," Doherty told Piro. "By the way, you knew it was on my bucket list. I mean you called me and you said, 'It's kind of bucket list, Shannen.' I was so excited."

While reminiscing about the "amazing trip," Piro praised Doherty's adventurous spirit.

"And she was just, I mean she's incredible, jumping off of every level of the yacht. Even the highest. Shannen is fearless, she truly is," he said.

Doherty also recalled injuring herself on the yacht’s stairs while trying to avoid being stung by jellyfish.

"That's the amazing thing, you jump off the highest point of this enormous yacht and you go to climb back on," she added. "I got scared of the jellyfish, so I went the long way and the dangerous way and that's when I gave myself that big bump on my leg."

Doherty received her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015 and went into remission in 2017. The cancer returned in 2019, and the actress announced in 2020 that she’d been diagnosed with metastatic stage 4 cancer.

She considered Piro both a trusted adviser during her journey with the disease and a close friend.

“We both immediately got each other,” Piro, the President and CEO of Cedars-Sinai affiliate The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute in Los Angeles, told PEOPLE last week. “Sometimes that just happens. The vibe is right and you understand each other and you understand what the thoughts mean as if you had known each other for years before that meeting. That's what it was like for us when we first met, and it was that way all the way until the very last.”

After all the buildup, you almost expected Donald Trump to walk on water to reach the stage.

But on Thursday night, the Republican presidential nominee merely strode forth — before a Vegas-style backdrop of gold letters that screamed “TRUMP” — and positioned himself in front of a colonnaded mock-up of the White House .

The Republican National Convention then sagged to a finish with a rambling, disjointed, 92-minute slog of a speech that followed an evening of testimonials — about Trump’s record in office, his golf game, his taste in music, his dance moves, and a great many other Trumpian triumphs.

Not only did it all strain credulity — it also tested the audience’s physical capacity to stay awake.

Times columnists Mark Z. Barabak and Anita Chabria took it all in before dashing to catch their flights home to California, that place haters depict as a stinking hellhole. They left behind these thoughts about the convention’s fourth and final night:

Barabak: This is the 20th national political convention that I’ve covered. I watched others as a kid and have gone back and viewed historical footage.

That was the strangest, most self-indulgent and worst acceptance speech I’ve ever heard. Your thoughts?

Chabria: So boring — and a wasted opportunity. Trump had such goodwill and faced an arena filled with wide-eyed worshipers. But he just couldn’t control his grievances and ego, despite throwing a dash of unity into the mix.

By the end, I felt like even he was bored. After improvising for way too long, he ambled back to his prepared text, which inexplicably veered off into a deep dive on the Revolutionary War.

But there are two big-picture takeaways for me.

First, this was a strongman performance. Trump simply repeated over and over that every problem, real or perceived, was within his power to fix (no details given). Immigration, inflation, even cancer. He promised to magically make it all disappear, while building an “iron dome” around the United States to protect it from missile attacks.

He even boasted that when he was president, he “could stop wars with just a telephone call.”

It became silly at some point.

My second takeaway is that bread and circuses — the Roman phrase for distracting the populace with spectacle — was in full force. We had Kid Rock, Dana White (head of the Ultimate Fighting Championship) and Hulk Hogan.

What did you think of that weird lineup?

Barabak: In the annals of political history, there will surely be a place for Hogan, who demonstrated — in case we needed any reminding — that the line between politics and entertainment have blurred to the point of invisibility.

That’s not new. Heck, we’ve had a reality TV star in the White House, and he may be back in November for another four seasons.

But has anyone in the history of this great republic ever before torn off his shirt at a national political convention to reveal, below his still-rippling muscles, a red tank top supporting the presidential ticket?

“Over my career, I’ve been in the ring with some of the biggest [and] baddest dudes on the planet,” the 70-year-old Hogan said in the growly voice he wields at stage villains. “Donald Trump is the toughest of them all. They’ve thrown everything at Donald Trump. All the investigations, the impeachments, the court cases, and he’s still standing and kicking their butts.”

But enough was enough, Hogan — whose real name is Terry Bollea — declared before the “real Americans” thrilling to his primal call. After the attempt on Trump’s life, Hogan urged them, “Run wild, brother! Let Trump-a-mania rule again!”

It was all good fun, if swagger and pro wrestling are your thing. Fiserv Forum was full of testosterone.

But there was a hint of menace when Hogan asked, presumably of unreal Americans, “Whatcha gonna do when Donald Trump and all the Trump-a-maniacs run wild on you, brother?”

We saw what happened on Jan. 6.

From his box, Trump blew Hogan a kiss.

But let’s take a step back. The big question going in had focused on what Trump’s tone would be. He said he’d torn up his planned speech after last Saturday’s assassination attempt and rewrote his remarks to deliver a less pugnacious, more harmonious and unifying message. Do you think he delivered?

Chabria: He had his moments, but they were few.

He began with an account of the assassination attempt that was subdued and genuine.

Then came the ugly.

He claimed that undocumented immigration was “killing hundreds of thousands of people a year” — though it was unclear what exactly he was referring to — and that immigrants were spreading “misery, crime, poverty, disease and destruction to communities all across our land.”

He also got one “China virus” in there, and a few election conspiracies, including an ominous take on losing in 2020: “The election result — we are never going to let it happen again.”

At some point, with all the hate, looping and non sequiturs, it became hard to listen to.

Did you make it to the end of his speech, Mark?

Barabak: I did, but it wasn’t easy.

The lack of substance wasn’t surprising. Trump has always been a once-over-lightly kind of guy when it comes to policy.

I mean, let’s face it: The ex-president is as much or more of an entertainer than a politician. That’s a big part of his appeal. And folks who go to his political rallies to be entertained are probably used to the kind of stream-of-consciousness, discursive speech he delivered Thursday night.

Not so for most of those — probably the majority — who were hearing Trump speak at length for their first time since he left the White House 3½ years ago.

He piled tangent upon tangent, and heaped ad-lib atop ad-lib — about Hannibal Lecter, Venezuela as a convention site, and the size of crowds that singer Kid Rock draws to his concerts, among other weird digressions — which pushed his remarks way past the attention spans of even some of his most loyal devotees. They could be seen streaming from the hall before he finally, mercifully, finished more than half an hour after his scheduled conclusion.

The long and flabby performance was, at the least, a squandered political opportunity. For those who hung in to the end, it was painful.

Chabria: But I also think what he didn’t say was notable.

The word “abortion” has not been uttered once this week. The Republicans literally sought to talk past one of their greatest political liabilities. We need to remember that Ohio’s Sen. J.D. Vance, the vice presidential nominee, has said he would like to see a national ban.

Trump has settled on the “state’s rights” response, but also appointed the conservative Supreme Court justices who undid Roe vs. Wade. He could easily create a national ban on abortion medication through executive action using the Comstock Act, a law from the 1800s that bans the mailing of any item that can be used to end a pregnancy.

So not speaking about the issue was a craven play for votes. We shouldn’t forget that.

Anything else jump out at you?

Barabak: The effort to humanize Trump and smooth his jagged edges remained in full swing, and at times was embarrassing to watch.

Several who’ve brushed up against Trump — business associates, people who manage his properties, one of his army of attorneys, a golf pro at a Palm Beach resort — took the stage to deliver assorted testimonials that were utterly fatuous when they didn’t fall flat.

Linda McMahon, the former pro wrestling executive who served as director of the Small Business Administration under Trump, told of a meeting where one of his grandchildren climbed onto his lap and mussed his hair.

And Trump was TOTALLY FINE with that!

Trump’s attorney in his hush money/election interference trial, Alina Habba, went on at length about the unfairness of his felony conviction before relating a moment during the trial when she was outside the courthouse, speaking to Trump on a cellphone. When a well-wisher near Habba hollered out, Trump heard the voice and asked to speak to his fan. And he did!

The wonderment in Habba’s voice suggested the loquacious ex-president had just turned water to wine right there on the streets of Manhattan.

John Nieporte, the head pro at Trump’s West Palm Beach, Fla., golf club, raved about him as a “great boss and helluva golfer,” exalting Trump’s game from tee shot to the putting green.

“Donald Trump: 21 club championships. Joe Biden, zero,” Nieporte said, as though that settled the election right there.

It was about as emotionally moving as a cardboard box, as though a bunch of rent-a-pals were trotted out onstage after being told: If there’s something nice you’d like to say, choose the most banal thing you can.

Chabria: It was, as you put it, like watching a Friars roast — just one obsequious testimonial after another. I have to admit, some of my favorite shots were the cutaways to Melania Trump and Usha Vance; their body language was revealing.

Mrs. Trump’s face during the Kid Rock performance was one of pure endurance. And Mrs. Vance looked like she was questioning every life choice that led her to this moment.

Those two women, both strong and smart, were my favorite part of the convention.

Mark, what’s your political bottom line on the event?

Barabak: I’d call it largely a success, though it would have been a lot more successful if Trump hadn’t brought it to such a thudding close.

He had four nights — including a chunk of prime time — to put a high gloss on his presidency and disparage Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. He launched his new running mate and mini-me, J.D. Vance. He fired up his MAGA troops. He showed that, physically at least, the attempt on his life hasn’t taken a toll.

(We’ll see how long Trump keeps wearing that supersized bandage.)

That said, it’s unclear what kind of bounce, if any, Trump will get.

Nothing seems to change the fundamentals of this dispiriting presidential contest, or to move public opinion.

If Trump had stopped after the gripping account of last Saturday’s attack and walked off with some words of reconciliation and healing, he’d have been much better off. He might still get a big bounce. Maybe I underestimate voters’ appetite for long-winded incoherence.

But in the end, what happened this week on the shores of Lake Michigan may end up not mattering very much, given Trump’s consistent lead in polls and Biden’s dire straits.

It wasn’t necessarily a waste of time, however. The folks in Milwaukee were awfully kind, and there was plenty of beer, sausage and pretzels. Thanks to you readers who joined us this week.

A global IT outage has knocked thousands of Microsoft computers offline. Northeastern experts explain what this means

Flights were being canceled around the world. Bank and hospital systems were in a deadlock. TV stations were scrambling, and 911 services were down in multiple states.   

These were just a few of the challenges stemming from a major IT outage on Friday causing Windows PCs around the world to malfunction and get the dreaded Blue Screen of Death.

The outage can be traced back to a single defective software update issued by Crowdstrike, a U.S-based cybersecurity company that provides security software services to nearly 300 Fortune 500 companies. 

Crowdstrike CEO George Kurts said in a post on X Friday morning that “a fix has been deployed” and stressed the outage was not the result of a cyberattack or security breach. 

It could be a while for the update to go through for everyone, and users have found a workaround that involves booting the PC in Safe Mode and deleting the file containing the update on the back end; however, that isn’t a perfect solution for everyone .

Additionally, some people have found that rebooting their PCs as many as 15 times could also fix the issue , according to Microsoft. 

Kevin Fu, a Northeastern University professor of electrical and computer engineering and cybersecurity adviser to the White House, said the incident “calls into question the fundamentals.” 

“What’s really a gut punch is that this is a cybersecurity company, which is a type of company that should be the world’s expert in keeping systems highly available, but it did the opposite,” he adds. 

It’s a frustrating and dangerous predicament for consumers to be in, he notes. He points to the outage’s impact on hospital systems since patient care is time sensitive. Given the scope of industries affected and the duration of the outages, Fu says it’s likely that the economy will likely take a big financial hit.

“I would not be surprised if at the end of the year, the U.S. government, the Department of Commerce, will publish something that shows a dip in the gross domestic product as a result of the single software outage,” he says. 

But how could such a simple software update cause such big problems? 

Fu says there is still much to be learned about the situation but he guesses the issue could have been as simple as an error in a small piece of code that went unnoticed when the company was testing out the update before it was deployed. 

“Maybe there was a one where there should have been a zero, and maybe that never had any significance except for in this particular case,” he adds. 

Josep Jornet, a professor of electrical and computer engineering, says the outage highlights the global economy’s reliance on a select few pieces of technology run over the internet. That puts both consumers and businesses at an increased risk, he says. 

“Today, any company whose infrastructure (servers and/or user-facing terminals) relied on Windows and utilized CloudStrike, has had at least some of their operations disrupted,” he says. Banking, transportation, e-commerce for any company (e.g., billing, ticketing, scheduling, etc.). All gone.”

It’s anyone’s guess when all systems will be fully operational again given the scale of the issue and the complexities involved with getting all those PCs online again, Fu says. 

“I would not be surprised if it gets fixed today,” he says. “I would not be surprised if it gets fixed in six months. If it’s going to be a six-month fix, we’ll likely see workarounds where maybe some service is degraded. I would imagine by the end of the day (Friday), we’re going to see a lot of workarounds put in place.”

UPDATE: Gov. Josh Shapiro has now endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace President Joe Biden as the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee. This post has been updated to reflect that.

The other shoe has dropped and President Joe Biden has left the presidential race.

It’s a decision that could have major implications for Pennsylvania as the Democratic Party recasts its national ticket. Here’s why:

Gov. Josh Shapiro will be considered for a spot on the rebuilt national ticket.

As a popular, swing-state governor, this is getting pretty obvious now.

As veteran Democratic strategist James Carville told PennLive earlier this week: “He (Shapiro) would be one of the top five mentioned in any conversation about any position on any national ticket.”

The reasons?

Shapiro brings automatic demographic balance to any ticket headed by a woman or person of color. Most people think the Democrats cannot win the White House without Pennsylvania’s 19 electoral college votes, and Shapiro is quite popular in his home state. Like J.D. Vance for the Republicans, he helps break new generational ground for the national Democratic ticket.

Shapiro, at age 51, is not only 30 years younger than Biden, but eight years younger than Harris.

If the party coalesces around Harris for the top of the ticket, Shapiro is saying he will be part of that consensus.

The prospect that a Democrat other than Vice President Kamala Harris would seek the presidential nomination seemed less and less likely as Sunday wore on as Shapiro endorsed Harris for president Sunday evening and news reports have both Govs. Gavin Newsom of California and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan making it clear they would not mount challenges against Harris.

If asked, would Shapiro take on a vice presidential candidacy?

If he tells you let us know. When reporters have asked, Shapiro has steadfastly batted away questions about this prior to Sunday.

But most observers within and outside of his inner circle that PennLive reached in the past week seem to think it would be very hard for him to resist.

Shapiro would see the benefit of an instant national profile - good for one’s political future. If the Democrats’ win, he’s vice president; if the Democrats’ lose, it may not really taint Shapiro as long as he can avoid any Dan Quayle-like moments on the campaign trail. And he doesn’t have to give up his current office to run because his term runs through 2026.

“I see him doing it,” said one longtime friend of Shapiro’s who asked not to be identified in order to discuss a still-evolving national picture. “The national visibility, and having national party leaders rally around him I think offsets any negatives.”

Senate Minority Leader Jay Costa, D-Allegheny County, said a Harris-Shapiro ticket sounds good to him.

“I think there’s nice balance there that could be successful. There’s no question governor Shapiro is extremely popular here in Pennsylvania and it would go a long way in, I believe, in locking down Pennsylvania.

“I think the message that they have would (also) resonate in the important states like Wisconsin and Illinois and Michigan,” Costa said. “There’s similarities in the nature of those states and that will bring a lot of support to a national ticket.”

Not too much would change in at the state Capitol in the short term. But...

Shapiro would still be governor through a national general election campaign, if he was tabbed for the ticket.

That might not change too much in Harrisburg.

There’s usually not much major business done with the legislature in the late summer and fall before a major general election. And, as mentioned before, if the national ticket with Shapiro loses, he’s still governor of Pennsylvania on the other side, with a 2026 re-elect effort to look forward too.

But if Shapiro was on a national ticket that won, that would be history-making in Pennsylvania too, as Lt. Gov. Austin Davis would, in January 2025, become the first Black governor in the state’s history.

Who decides this, and who’s Shapiro’s competition?

The presidential nomination will be formally decided by the roll call of delegates to the Democratic National Convention. Before Biden’s withdrawal, there was talk of having a virtual roll call in the first week of August.

It’s not immediately clear how the party will go forward now, but the convention is still slated to begin Aug. 19 in Chicago.

Ultimately, the vice presidential candidate will be chosen by the eventual presidential nominee, with, likely, a lot of quick polling, and a fair amount of advice from party titans like the Obamas, the Clintons and key donors.

Other prominently named contenders for the second spot on the ticket, besides Shapiro, include North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, Biden’s Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Arizona U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

Of that group, Kelly was the first to endorse Harris Sunday. Shapiro was second, weighing in at 6:12 p.m. Sunday evening.

Here's what Biden's withdrawal means for Kentucky's DNC delegates

Sadness. Respect. Gratitude. 

That’s how some Kentucky delegates to the Democratic National Convention reacted to the news that President Joe Biden will step aside as the party’s next nominee. 

Though the possibility that Biden could withdraw from the presidential race has dominated the news for several weeks, some delegates were still caught by surprise while they were on the road or even at church.  

Kentucky will send 54 delegates to the convention next month. Those delegates were chosen at a state convention in June. Forty-six delegates were committed to Biden while eight were “uncommitted,” meaning they could but were not required to vote for Biden. There will also be four alternates: three for Biden and one uncommitted. 

It’s not yet clear what the process will be for selecting a replacement nominee for Biden. Biden endorsed current Vice President Kamala Harris as the next nominee. Though the convention is scheduled for Aug. 19 to Aug. 22 in Chicago, the party may hold an earlier virtual roll-call to meet early electoral deadlines in some states — including Ohio .

On Sunday, some delegates openly shared their thoughts about Biden's decision, while others declined to comment, citing instructions from Morgan Eaves, the executive director of the Kentucky Democratic Party. 

“We respectfully ask that you please refrain from speculating or speaking to the media on possible next steps,” Eaves wrote Sunday in an email obtained by The Courier Journal. 

The Kentucky Democratic Party has also declined to share a full list of delegates heading to the convention. Spokesperson Jonathan Levin cited security concerns.

State Rep. Rachel Roberts of Newport

“Today is a day for reflection, for everyone to just pause and reflect upon a life of service,” Roberts said, adding she feels “gratitude (to Biden) for a life so far lived in servant leadership.”  

Jack Dulworth, a member of the Democratic National Committee who sits on the executive committee from Louisville

“Today is about a great American, Joe Biden, who made a decision to move America forward,” Dulworth said. 

Johnalma Barnett, a delegate from Bowling Green who will represent Kentucky’s 2 nd Congressional District 

Barnett said she was at church Sunday afternoon when an usher showed her a cell phone with the news that Biden was stepping aside. Initially she was “surprised,” she said, even though she was expecting the news. 

“I’m still at a loss … I will support Vice President Harris, but I think the party just pushed him aside too quick,” Barnett said. “This is really based on one debate.” 

Barnett does think Harris can win, if she's picked as the nominee. She said she was encouraged to overhear a conversation at a store where men were expressing their support for Harris. 

Barnett is not eager for Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear to become the party’s vice presidential nominee because she doesn’t want him to leave Kentucky. 

Bren Martin, a delegate from Greenup County who will represent Kentucky’s 4 th  Congressional District

“I greatly respect President Biden’s choice to step out of the race. I am still processing what it means for the Democratic Party, the country and the world,” Martin told The Courier Journal. “I know this was not easy for him to do.” 

Martin said she is looking forward to moving ahead with the nomination process and is grateful to Biden for his service. 

Jeff Noble, at-large delegate for Kentucky

In a Facebook comment Sunday under a photo of a mock-up of a Harris-Beshear campaign sign, Noble wrote: "Although I am going to the Democratic National Convention next month as an uncommitted at-large delegate for Kentucky, I will now be supporting Vice President Harris's nomination for president. My goal as an uncommitted delegate has been achieved."
