100 Hargrave Motoryacht Walkthrough [Boat Review + Video]

My name is Fletcher Daves . I’m with Denison Yachting. I’d like to welcome you to Key West. Today we’re on board 100 foot Hargrave VITESSE and I’d like to show you around.

VITESSE is a 2007 100 foot Hargrave powered by Caterpillar C-32s. She’s capable of a 17 knot cruise but they usually pull it back to an easy and economical 12 knots. She has a full beam salon, full beam master and enormous exterior spaces.

For anyone familiar with Hargrave, you know that their guest areas always feel more spacious than other boats in the 100 foot range. You’ll see that that’s a common theme on VITESSE especially here on the flybridge where we’re going to start today’s walkthrough.

So we’re going to start in the aft section of the flybridge. Center line a 14 foot AB inflatable tender outboard two Yamaha VX series jetskis, each one of these toys are easily splashed using the quick lift davit on the port side.

Centerline is the jacuzzi. A dedicated cover serves as a sunpad complementing the surrounding seating. A unique feature of this layout which I love is a propane grill found adjacent to the jacuzzi on the port side.

As we step out of the jacuzzi we walk under this massive hardtop and into the main guest area. To starboard is a huge dinette that could comfortably seat 10 people. Across from here is a bar with 4 bar stools. This bar has plenty of prep area, storage, a sink. There’s more serving space forward with an ice maker and fridge below. All the way forward on the bridge to starboard is comfortable built-in seating across from that on the port side is the helm station.

To starboard we have a Furuno multi-function display with a Garmin unit on the port side. Between them two Caterpillar engine displays. Also on the helm you have a Nyad stabilizer control, autopilot, bow thruster control and a VHF. You can access the wheelhouse from here but we’re going to head to the aft deck

The aft deck on board VITESSE is a focal point because as you can see with boarding doors on either side, at the dock this is basically your front door. Obviously the center piece on the aft deck is this large teak table. Forward to port you have a sink, refrigerator and storage.

We’re moving from the aft deck into the main salon. With over 20 feet of beam in this main salon these large windows flood this area with natural light making it feel much larger than it is. On the port side you have a large L-shaped couch giving you a perfect view of the entertainment center to starboard. Also to starboard a built-in bar, great for coffee in the morning or cocktails in the evening. This bar is also equipped with a fridge and ice maker. The full beam main salon has a layout that flows into the formal dining area. The formal dining area comfortably seats 8 and everything that you would need for dining here is located in the surrounding storage outboard.

Here in the dining area on the forward bulkhead you have built-in cabinets with a wine cooler and liquor cabinet. This outboard storage continues on the starboard side as we move forward. Here in the companionway inboard is the dayhead. Continuing forward is the access to the wheelhouse but we’ll come back to that later. Also inboard is your main breaker panel.

The popularity of the country kitchen has been consistent for decades because it brings everything you love about your kitchen at home right here on the boat. A feature unique to the galley on board VITESSE is the ability to walk all the way around this island. This feature is not found on many boats in this range. Here in the galley full-size fridge and freezer, a Viking range with oven and 4-burner cooktop and above that a microwave convection oven.

To the port side a large dual basin sink, underneath the sink is a trash compactor and a Viking dishwasher. Forward here in the galley is a built-in half circle dinette tying together this entire space. From here we have easy access to the VIP stateroom located forward and to starboard from the galley. The best thing about this VIP stateroom is its privacy secluding your guests from the rest of the boat. VIP stateroom offers queen size bed, cedarline closets outboard to port and starboard, a TV forward and the full ensuite is located aft to port.

Now that we’ve seen the forward VIP we’re going to go back up the companion way and here on the starboard side is access to the walkaround leading up to the foredeck. Forward on the bow is another great lounging space for guests. This is also where you’ll find your ground tackle. Now we’ll take the starboard walkaround back into the starboard companionway and up to the wheelhouse.

This lower helm station offers all the electronics needed to navigate the boat safely. She has 2 Acert display screens, a Garmin multi-function display screen, in the center two Caterpillar engine displays as well as your engine and throttle controls. On the port side is an L-shaped settee and dinette.

We’re going to go back up the companion way through the formal dining area on the port side we have access to the remaining staterooms. And the layout here is the owner’s stateroom aft and two guest staterooms forward. We’re going to move into the forward starboard stateroom first which is perfect for any guest but two side-by-side twins and a Pullman berth that pulls out of the inboard bulkhead. The ensuite here is found aft and to starboard.

Now from the starboard forward stateroom, we move to the port. This stateroom is really a second VIP with a queen bed, there’s a vanity forward in the stateroom, two large cedar line closets with storage all around including under the bed and aft to port is another spacious ensuite. We’re going to move from these forward staterooms aft into the owner’s cabin. Just before we enter the owner’s stateroom is a stackable washer and dryer on the starboard side.

The owner’s cabin is full beam giving you over 20 feet of width. Centerline you’ll find a king-sized bed which is raised up, so when you wake up in the morning you can see right out the window. On the starboard side you’ll find a comfortable settee, a cedar-lined hanging closet forward of that. Also nearby is an entertainment system complete with surround sound. More built-in storage is found on the port side. Moving after the owner’s cabin, we have his and her bathrooms also stretching the entire beam of the boat giving us space for both a shower and bathtub centerline.

Now we’re going to move half through the main salon heading down to the swim platform. With removable stanchions, this area gives you all the space you need for water activities. And from here moving forward, we have access to the crew area and engine room. To port is the captain’s cabin with an ensuite and on the starboard side is two more crew cabins that share a separate head and shower. As we make our way forward we have more cold storage and another washer and dryer. Continuing forward from the crew space is access to the engine room.

VITESSE is powered by 2 Caterpillar C-32 Acerts with 1800 horsepower each. On the starboard side outboard, 2 water makers. Aft in the engine room on both sides are your 38 kilowatt northern lights generators.

Hargrave Custom 100

Hargrave Custom Yachts has progressed well along the learning curve since introducing the marque several years ago. The new 100-foot raised pilothouse motoryacht La Marchesa has a refined look and a luxurious feel less apparent on earlier Hargrave launches.

The builder has returned to its roots, embracing the uncompromising standards of its late namesake, legendary yacht designer Jack Hargrave.

“We insisted on wider passageways, wider doors, to make it more in the proportions that Jack always promoted”, said senior designer and veteran staffer James Loeschen. “Everybody seems to like the way the boat feels inside, and I think that has a lot to do with it.”

La Marchesa ‘s owners, Dr. Robert and Christine Emmons, have owned seven yachts. They cruise extensively and put about 1,200 hours of use on their previous yacht, an 82-footer. “We don’t just park it and hold cocktail parties”, Robert Emmons said.

They plan to spend three months cruising the Northeast this summer. Given the couple’s active cruising lifestyle, personal involvement with La Marchesa ‘s design was essential to the building process.

“We started off thinking in terms of building a 92-footer and ended up with 100 feet”, Robert Emmons said. “We enjoyed that process immensely. We found (Hargrave) to be very open and very willing to make some changes without a lot of change orders for minor changes in the design and development of the boat.”

Personal involvement is evident, for example, in the arrangement of the master stateroom and nearby library. A bath with double entries separates the two, so Robert Emmons, an early riser, can pass through from the stateroom and do a bit of work or read in the morning without disturbing his wife or their guests. The library also has a Pullman berth, allowing it to double as a guest cabin.

A number of La Marchesa ‘s other details stand out as improvements from the builder. Stairways generally have reduced angles and wider steps. Portlights are fitted in heads wherever possible to provide fresh air and light. Many of the berths, particularly in the guest quarters, are full dimension for added comfort and to allow the use of standard-size linens.

The master stateroom has a true king berth, nicely recessed into the bulkhead and flanked by bow-front nightstands. One guest stateroom has twins, the other a queen.

A beautiful country kitchen, forward on the main deck, is available to guests and crew. This area is finished with granite countertops, a sparkling inlaid table surrounded by a plush settee and a teak-and-holly sole that extends into the main foyer and beyond to the raised pilothouse. Abaft the pilothouse, the arrangement is familiar, with a carpeted dining area and saloon defined by wood-framed tray ceilings and recessed lighting.

The décor aboard La Marchesa , as on most other Hargrave Custom yachts, is nicely finished and tasteful, but stops short of being opulent. Handrails are varnished wood supported by simple brackets, not backlighted acrylic on custom-cast, gold-plated dolphins. Moldings are attractive and well fitted, but lack the intricate hand carving and detailing that drives up costs.

“Our mission is to be the lowest cost producer of quality yachts in the 70- to 125-foot size range”, said Hargrave President Mike Joyce. He cited the low labor costs and overhead of Hargrave’s Pacific Rim building facility and the savings of direct sales without a dealer network.

To promote sound construction and safety, Hargrave builds to Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and American Boat & Yacht Council standards. DNV or other classification is standard on yachts destined for European owners and is optional on American deliveries. The shipyard itself is fully certified to international quality standards as an ISO 9002 facility.

Robert Emmons called his 100-footer a quality yacht that represents significant value. After taking La Marchesa on a 15-day shakedown cruise last winter, he returned with a punch list of corrective items less than a page long.

“In my experience, that speaks volumes about how the boat was built”, he said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with how the boat performs.” Mike (Joyce) is a man of really great integrity that stands behind the product. He will do anything that has to be done within reason to see that the customer is really satisfied and pleased with the product. “I think that’s very special.”

The Hargrave History

Without the genius of Jack Hargrave, founder of Hargrave Yachts, the yachting world we know and love would be a different landscape. His design work played a significant role in shaping the face of modern yachting, creating the iconic American Yacht look that survives to this day. From its first incarnation as the top yacht design firm in America, Hargrave Yachts has formed into the foremost builder of custom yachts in the 70′ to 135′ range with a reputation for outstanding service and impeccable quality. Jack Hargrave started his career designing sportfishing boats for Rybovitch before leaving to open his own design shop in 1958. The direction of yachting was forever changed on the day that Willis Slade asked Hargrave to design the world’s first large fiberglass sportfishing yacht. When the resulting yacht, was launched to acclaim in 1960, it marked the beginning of Hatteras Yachts and the birth of a new industry. Jack Hargrave had a talent for combining timeless exterior profiles with practical, functional interior arrangements, producing vessels that came to define the American style of yachts. Over the next 40+ years, he designed more than 75 powerboats for Hatteras, going on to design over 250 yachts for some of America’s premiere yacht companies, including Burger, Amels, Prairie, Atlantic, Striker, and Halmatic. His influence and skill as the foremost American naval architect and yacht designer led to his induction into the NMMA Hall of Fame in 1996, and kept his company on its pinnacle as America’s top naval design firm. In 1997, shortly after the legendary designer passed away, a former employee named Michael Joyce returned to the firm to take over as president and CEO. Joyce was determined not to let the iconic company fade away, convinced that Hargrave, far more than just a design firm, was in fact a brand name. Joyce realized that Hargrave could no longer rely on builders for steady busines. Soon to be the most successful yacht builders had formed their own in-house design and engineering departments. He conceived a plan to expand the company into a constructor of custom luxury yachts, and Hargrave Custom Yachts was born. Hargrave Yachts produces a full line of custom-built yachts, designed entirely to the specifications of each owner. They offer a unique cost effective program that blends a custom design with a semi-production build process, giving the savings back to the client. Their attention to detail and unwaveringly high standards are paying off. More than half of their owners  have built more than one yacht with them and some are now on their fourth order! The most boats ever will compete in the 100th Bayview Yacht Club race to Mackinac Island

Billed on its website as the “world’s longest continuously run long-distance freshwater yacht race,” the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race is set to start Saturday.

A record-setting 334 boats have registered for the 100th year of the race, shattering the record of 316 in 1985 and a huge contrast compared with the 200 boats that raced last year, said David Stoyka, spokesman for the Bayview Yacht Club, which puts on the race.

Bayview Yacht Club says boats start leaving the Black River in Port Huron around 8 a.m. on race day and will continue leaving until around noon. From the Black River, they will proceed up the St. Clair River, under the Blue Water Bridge, into Lake Huron.

The first scheduled start time in Lake Huron is 11:30 a.m., with starts every 10 minutes until approximately 1:30 p.m. The starts may be delayed due to weather conditions.

This year, for the 100th running, the race will follow the original 1925 route and span 204 nautical miles. From the starting point, the boats will head north along the Michigan shoreline, passing south of Bois Blanc Island, sailing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island, organizers said.

The range of boats are expected to finish in between 30 and 60 hours.

The sailors

Teams at all skill levels have entered the race, which draws competitors from around the world.  The highly skilled racers know they will cross the bow of competitors within inches. Still, there's always risk of a crash with the slightest miscalculation.

"Everybody recognizes this is super intense," said champion sailor  Tim Prophit , 65, of St. Clair Shores, past commodore of Bayview Yacht Club and owner of Fast Tango, a North American 40 sailboat.

The teams are vying for trophies and flags to show their accomplishments.

The J.L. Hudson Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division I, and the Canadian Club Classic Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division II.

How can spectators follow the race?

Spectators can go to bycmack.com during the race and click on “RaceTracking” link to watch real-time GPS positioning of all the race boats, or, on your mobile device, download the free app YB Races and select the current race.

Boats will start arriving at Mackinac Island on Sunday afternoon and continue until Monday evening, all dependent upon the wind.

Finishes can be seen from Windermere Point on Mackinac Island at the south end of Main Street.

Sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races are called “Old Goats,” according to the club, while those who have completed 50 are called “Grand Rams.” 

"Double Goats" are sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races and 25 Chicago Yacht Club race to Mackinac races. This year’s Chicago to Mackinac race encountered strong winds in Lake Michigan , snapping some boats’ masts and tossing one sailor overboard. No one was hurt.

Volunteers who have served for 15 years on the Race Committee are honored with the title “Old Forts,” as designated by the Race Committee.
