Monster High Movies in Order Chronologically and By Release Date

Monster High started as a book series, with the first book being released in 2010. Then, shortly after, it was a web series with short videos released on a Monster High website in 2010. The franchise has blown up in popularity, and over the last decade, there have been 17 Monster High movie (each with a pun-based title), along with a new CGI animated series on Nickelodeon and a third-generation reboot featuring live-action actors.

Speaking of third-generation, like several franchises, Monster High has rebooted itself a few times. As a result, there are technically a few films that could be considered origin stories. The ideal order of Monster High movies would be to watch the true prequel Welcome to Monster High , followed by the recent Monster High: The Movie , and then the web series. After this, it doesn't generally matter how you watch the Monster High movies, as they're usually stand-alone stories. Here is the ideal chronological order; if you'd prefer to watch Monster High movies in order from first to last, click here.

Update October 30, 2023: Monster High is a great family Halloween watch, so in honor of the season, this article has been updated with the most recent entry in the franchise, Monster High 2 , and where you can stream the movies.

Monster High: New Ghoul at School (2010)

Continuing with our Monster High movies in order to watch, we have New Ghoul at School . This movie follows Frankie Stein on her first day at Monster High, and thus belongs near the very beginning, either before or immediately after the web series. Stein is new to high school and the world, having only been created 15 days ago. She doesn't know how to fit in, a classic new kid trope that makes for a very relatable and sweet movie about being a teenager.

Monster High: Fright On! (2011)

Next in the Monster High film series, we have Fright On! Monster High has always been a haven for all monsters, but that changes when a flux of vampires and werewolves enroll in the school in hopes that they can get along. The ancient feud between vampires and werewolves (something also seen in Twilight and the TV series What We Do in the Shadows ) threatens to break the peace of monster high.

Monster High: Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love? (2010)

As we go down Monster High in order, we should follow with Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love? Draculaura's Sweet 1600 is approaching, and she reminisces about an old boyfriend named Valentine. But she is currently dating Clawd, her best friend's brother, who seems to keep messing up in their relationship. So when Valentine returns, Draculaura is torn, but Valentine has more dastardly plans than he lets on.

Monster High: Escape from Skull Shores (2011)

Next in the list of Monster High movies is Escape from Skull Shores . The school is on spring break, and the girls decided to have a girls-only trip. Led by Lagoona (who is a kind of variation on the great Creature From the Black Lagoon ), the girls go sailing. Before they arrive at their destination, their ship is attacked, and they are left stranded. A mysterious man rescues them and takes them to a place called Skull Island, where even more mysteries await.

Monster High: Friday Night Frights (2012)

Friday Night Frights is an empowering entry in the Monster High film series. The Skultimate Roller Maze Championship is sabotaged when the boys get too injured to skate. Frankie convinces the girls that they can do it instead. The boys start training the girls to skate along the stone gargoyles of the competing school.

Monster High: Ghouls Rule (2012)

Ironically, in the Monster High movies, Halloween is a night ghouls fear, with them often staying inside. But this year, Frankie and her friends decide they will change that. Monster High: Ghouls Rule delightfully builds on the world that the franchise had created, developing a fun mythology for the school and the Halloween holiday, further 'humanizing' the characters.

Monster High: Scaris, City of Frights (2013)

The next entry in our Monster High movies in order is Scaris, City of Frights . Clawdeen gets a chance to apprentice with a legendary fashion designer, so she heads to Scaris, France (a variation on the French pronunciation of Paris, yet another silly but fun pun), with her best friends in tow. But while they're there, they learn some secrets that get them into trouble.

Monster High Gets Renewed for Season 2 at Nickelodeon

Monster High: 13 Wishes (2013)

In Monster High: 13 Wishes , Howleen, Clawdeen's little sister, is annoyed at being in her older sister's shadow. She stumbles upon a genie who will give her 13 wishes, but she quickly realizes that everything she asks for isn't really what she wants. 2013 was when The Monster High craze was starting to die down but it was clear that the property still had its fans.

Monster High: Frights, Camera, Action! (2014)

Moving on to the next entry in the Monster High film series, we have Frights, Camera, Action! In this story, Draculaura is told she is the rightful heir to the vampire throne and is whisked away to a royal coronation in Transylvania. The girls think something is amiss and search for the real vampire queen before it's too late and Draculaura is lost forever.

Monster High: Freaky Fusion (2014)

Freaky Fusion is the second Monster High movie released in 2014. In the story An ancient time machine fused eight Monster High students into hybrid monsters. A mad scientist then uses this machine to create an out-of-control monster, whose purpose means the end of Monster High. This exciting installment has some surprisingly suspenseful and fun moments.

Monster High: Haunted (2015)

Monster High is being haunted, but no one knows why. Spectra Vondergeist goes back to her ghost school to find out why. The other girls use Boogey Sand to transform into ghosts so that they can help her find the answers. This is one of the sadder and spookier installments in the Monster High franchise, but a very effective one.

Monster High: Boo York, Boo York (2015)

The names of most Monster High movies are puns that nearly write themselves. Boo York, Boo York , is a nod to the classic Frank Sinatra song. In this film, the girls hit Boo York in style! The focus of this film is the De Niles family hoping to carve out a new empire. Meanwhile, Catty Noir attempts to find a place for her music to shine.

Monster High: Great Scarrier Reef (2016)

Lagoona takes her friends with her when she is sent to the Great Scarrier Reef to complete a mission. The girls transform into sea creatures to help their friend with her quest. Monster High: Great Scarrier Reef takes the story underwater and into a whole new world of the Monster High universe.

Monster High: Electrified (2017)

After going down the list, it's fair to wonder how many Monster High movies were there. So far, we have 17 entries, with Electrified being the last one in the ranking. In this film, Clawdeen wants to open a salon for monsters and normies, which has never been done before. But, once word gets out, others are not too happy, and Clawdeen and her friends must protect Clawdeen's dream from sabotage. Monster High: Electrified is an unexpectedly inspiring call to empathy that felt extremely relevant to the politics of its post-election release date.

Three girls as modern monsters stand and stare into the camera in "Monster High: The Movie"

Monster High may have started as a line of spooky dolls back in 2010 but since then it’s become a multi-media franchise. With a series of YouTube shorts and animated and live-action movies to accompany each new generation of dolls. If you’ve been wanting to get into the world of Monster High for a while now but don’t know where to start, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s the complete list of Monster High movies in ready-to-watch order.

Monster High: New Ghoul at School

Monster High: New Ghoul at School; Frankie Stein, a grey skinned person with black and white hair, makes the peace sign in front of a shadowy crowd.

In Monster High: New Ghoul at School we’re introduced to Monster High and its students through the brand-new, repurposed eyes of Frankie Stein. Only a week old, we follow Frankie as she attends school for the first time and learns the real horror comes from trying to interact with your peers.

Monster High: Fright On!

Monster High Fright On; Laguna Blue, a blue skinned blonde creature, stands next to another blue water creature in a helmet across from a red headed, yellow skinned man, with some other characters behind them. They all look concerned

As part of Headmistress Bloodgood’s eventual plan to unite humans and monsters, Monster High: Fright On! sees Monster High merging with an all vampire school, and an all werewolf school. But there’s a long-standing feud between the two species, and when someone from outside the school starts fanning the flames things start getting a little scary.

Monster High: Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love?

Monster High: Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love?; Abby Bominable, a blue skinned girl, stands behind Draculaura, a vampire with black and pink hair, both facing Frankie. Several other students stand behind them.

Monster High: Friday Night Frights sees the girls stepping in when the star players are injured just before the big game. Weirdly the big game is a roller derby style event here (a sport largely played by women in the real world) rather than American football. But, in the world of Monster High it’s not going to stay a boys only game for long if the girls have anything to do with it.

Monster High: Ghouls Rule!

Monster High; Ghouls Rule; Meowlody, Persephone, and Toralei Stripe, all were cats, sit in a table and look at the camera. Toralei is different shades of brown but the other two are black and white.

It’s up to the students to prove their innocence before the big day so Frankie and her friends can reunite normies and monsters in celebration.

Monster High: Scaris, City of Frights

Monster High: Scaris City of Frights; Draculaura, wearing a blue berest, holds hands with and looks into the eyes of a gargoyle.

Clawdeen gets the chance to apprentice with the legendary fashion icon Moanatella Ghostier in Scaris, and so of course her friends have to come with her in Monster High: Scaris, City of Frights . While Clawdeen battles her fellow apprentices for fashion supremacy, the other girls locate a spooky secret under the city streets.

Monster High: 13 Wishes

Monster High 13 Wishes; Howleen Wolfe, a red haired werewolf, stands surrounded by the ghouls, all wearing sinister expressions.

Clawdeen’s little sister Howleen starts high school, but in her determination to be the best student ever she takes genie Gigi Grant up on her offer of 13 wishes—and that’s where things go a little haywire in Monster High: 13 Wishes .

Monster High: Frights, Camera, Action!

Monster High: frights, camera, action!; Cleo de Nile, in blue and gold, stands next to Robecca, a bronze skinned, blue haired, robot, with Clawdeen on her other side.

Draculaura and friends head to Transylvania for a coronation in Monster High: Frights, Camera, Action! First told that she’s the rightful queen of the vampires, things turn out to be a little more complicated than that, leading Draculaura and friends on a round-the-world trip to find the truth.

Monster High: Freaky Fusion

Monster High: Freaky Fusions; Robecca and Draculaura talk outside the school.

A search for Frankie’s family history sends the gang 200 years into the past in Monster High: Freaky Fusion . Some high-spooktech mishaps lead to a bunch of the ghouls fusing with each other! They have to figure out their strange new powers while they work out how to separate into themselves again.

Monster High: Haunted

Monster High: Haunted; Close up of Draculaura looking surprised as her long pink and black pigtails float up.

Monster High is being haunted! When Spectra Vondergeist goes back to visit her old all-ghost school to figure out why, the gang follows her. The ghost world is cool but Principal Revenant is not, oppressing her students with detention chains and ghastly punishments. When she chains up Spectra in detention so she can’t return to Monster High, it’s up to the ghouls to rescue her in Monster High: Haunted.

Monster High: Boo York, Boo York

Monster High: Boo York, Boo York; Cleo de Nile stands in front of Deuce Gorgon, a boy with green snakes for hair, and Operetta, a red head with pale skin. Facing her on the side is Frankie Stein.

In Monster High: Boo York, Boo York Cleo de Nile is invited to a fancy gala in the big city to celebrate the return of a magical comet, so of course she’s invited her best ghoul friends to go with her! Catty Noir is chasing musical success while Nefera, Cleo’s sister, has her own nefarious plans involving the comet. Everyone’s going to have to work together to foil her plans if they want to keep their dream vacation from becoming a nightmare.

Monster High: Great Scarrier Reef

Monster High: Great Scarrier Reef; Laguna Blue and Frankie Stein swim beside each other in front of a coral reef. Both have ponytails and mermaid tails.

Monster High: Great Scarrier Reef sees the ghouls transformed into mermaids when they get sucked into the school pool and end up in the Great Scarrier Reef. It’s a journey of self-acceptance for Laguna, where she learns to embrace all of her quirky self while competing in a dance-off. She is facing off with an old frenemy, and battling a fearsome monster from the dark depths of the sea—all with a little help from her best ghoulfriends.

Welcome to Monster High

Welcome to Monster High; Draculaura stands in front of a spider web window with pink curtains. Her skin is pinker and her eyes larger in the new animation style.

Welcome to Monster High tells the story of how Monster High came into being. Draculaura desperately wanted to go to school, make friends, and live a normal life, but Dracula didn’t see how it could be possible. That is until they met Frankie Stein who wanted the same thing … so she helped convince him to start a school for monsters in his mansion. The ghouls travel the world, recruiting students and planning to reach out to the human “normie” population to build bridges and create a world where they can live together in peace. Of course, things get a little complicated when they meet a ghoul who wants to conquer rather than collaborate, but it’s nothing the Monster High gang can’t handle.

Monster High: Electrified

Monster High: Electrified; Clawdeen, Laguna, Draculaura, and Ghoulia stand around something below the level of the screen, looking down at it. Their hair is crimped, they were neon makeup, and their dresses are glowing.

After learning that Clawdeen wants to run a salon for monsters and humans, the ghouls decide it’s time to make her dreams come true. Choosing an old power plant in the human town for her new salon, Clawdeen digs into designing new clothes for the grand opening while the ghouls decorate and get set up. It looks like everything’s going to work out in Monster High: Electrified , but Moanica and her Zomboys have other plans. It’s going to be up to Frankie and Twyla to stop her from ruining the grand opening—and taking over the human town!

Monster High: The Movie

Three girls as modern monsters stand and stare into the camera in "Monster High: The Movie"

The first live-action film in the series, Monster High: The Movie is also a musical! Humans hate monsters and the feeling is mutual, which is a problem for Clawdeen. She has a werewolf mother and human father and that leaves her unwelcome everywhere. Invited to attend Monster High, she has to keep her human half a secret to avoid expulsion. Meanwhile, there’s some strange going’s on that puts the school in danger and it’s up to Clawdeen and her new friends to save the day.

How to watch all the ‘Monster High’ movies in order

The decade-old franchise is back and here to stay.

Clawdeen Wolf and Draculaura from Monster High: Fright On!

Whether we like it or not, we have all heard about Monster High . The hugely popular dolls have become a staple in many children’s toy collections, and the animated web series and films only solidified the public’s interest. Monster High takes classical monsters like werewolves and vampires, and puts them into a high school setting, to many a young girl’s delight.

Everyone thought they’d seen the last of Monster High in 2018 when the toy line was discontinued due to a decrease in sales. However, on Oct. 6, fresh air was breathed into the franchise with the release of its first live-action movie, Monster High: The Movie . This adaptation puts a new spin on the beloved characters by thrusting them into a more modern setting. With this brand-new addition, there are now 16 Monster High movies, which is a much bigger number than what most film franchises have to offer. If you’d like to dive into this mythical world but don’t know where to begin, you’ve come to the right place.

All Monster High films in order

The franchise has changed its style over the years, and with it, Monster High has suffered reboots in 2016 and 2022. Because of this, viewers will find continuity issues when watching the movies. Nevertheless, it’s best to keep things simple and enjoy Monster High by order of release, otherwise, the changes in art style and character backstories could be quite jarring.

With the exceptions of the first movie, New Ghoul at School , which serves as a pilot to the franchise, and the two reboots, Welcome to Monster High and Monster High: The Movie , viewers have nothing to worry about in regard to Monster High ‘s timeline. Since children are the franchise’s target audience, the films’ plots are self-contained, meaning the order in which viewers watch them isn’t too important. Even so, for those who would rather organize their viewing experience, here we list all the movies by release order.

  • Monster High: New Ghoul at School (2010)
  • Monster High: Fright On! (2011)
  • Monster High: Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love? (2012)
  • Monster High: Escape from Skull Shores (2012)
  • Monster High: Friday Night Frights (2013)
  • Monster High: Ghouls Rule (2012)

  • Monster High: Frights, Camera, Action! (2014)
  • Monster High: Freaky Fusion (2014)
  • Monster High: Haunted (2015)
  • Monster High: Boo York, Boo York (2015)
  • Monster High: Great Scarrier Reef (2016)
  • Welcome to Monster High (2016)
  • Monster High: Electrified (2017)
  • Monster High: The Movie (2022)

Now you can enjoy all the Monster High movies in order. Don’t worry; this is not the end of the line. Another film, titled Monster High: The Movie 2 , has already been announced and is set to be released in 2023. Judging by the success of the first live-action flick, expectations for the sequel are high. Hopefully, it lives up to its predecessor.
