The bad Star Wars game you secretly love for is coming to PS5

Meesa don’t want to remember this one, Ani

Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace poster next to gameplay of the tie-in game

A new retro Star Wars game is coming to PlayStation 5, the PSOne classic tie-in title Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace. Released in 1999 on PlayStation and PC, this marks the first time the game has been re-released in 25 years.

Coming to PlayStation via the PS Plus Premium subscription, the Phantom Menace tie-in game will be playable in its original form with the addition of save states and an improved resolution.

Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace mostly follows the story of the controversial 1999 prequel movie in a hack-and-slash format. Starting on the Separatist ship as Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’ll eventually meet Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine and battle in the streets of Naboo.

Alongside playing as the aforementioned Jedi Knights, you can also play as Queen Padme Amidala and even Captain Panaka, her bodyguard. Unfortunately, there are no Jar-Jar Binks sections, so there’s no “Meesa step in doo-doo” or sticking your tongue in an electrified pod-racer mini-game.

While the movie tie-in game does have a fair ally of variety with lengthy vehicle sections and puzzles, it’s not a very good game. In fact, back in 1999, the game launched to mixed reviews. Back in the day, GameSpot’s Jeff Gerstman (creator of Giant Bomb) gave the game a 4.2/10.

“This game manages to disappoint all audiences. Game players will be frustrated by the game's sketchy control,” he wrote. “Fans of the movie will be bummed out by the overall presentation. It all adds up to one Death Star-sized failure.”

If you’re looking for a much better game based on Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, we suggest the recent re-release of Star Wars: Episode 1 - Racer . Playable in a remastered state on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC, the classic racing game adapts the best part of The Phantom Menace (well, excerpt the Darth Maul fight) into a pulse-pounding racing game.

Of course, there's also some brilliant modern Star Wars games that everyone should play, including the almost-perfect Star Wars Jedi: Survivor . Alongside that, EA's Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is now in a great place - and a cheap place - for everyone to give a go.

Nevertheless, if you want to give the classic movie tie-in game a go, it’s included with the PS Plus Premium subscription, so why not try it?

A Popular Star Wars Game Comes to PS4 and PS5

The PS1 game, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, heads to PS4 and PS5 on January 16, 2024, for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers.

A classic entry in the Star Wars franchise, PS1's original Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, is on its way to PS4 and PS5 for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers.

PlayStation announced that Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace will be released on Jan. 16, as part of the console's Classics Catalog for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. The Phantom Menace is a tie-in to the much-maligned Star Wars prequel film of the same name. Still, the game saw middling but consistent reviews at launch and still proved popular among fans, solidifying it as a staple of the original PlayStation's extensive library of games.

Hasbro Goes Full 90s Throwback With Retro Series Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Figures

The game puts players in the roles of Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi as they don their Jedi attire and lightsabers to reenact key events and plot points from the original film in a top-down action-adventure title. On top of this, the game also features an expansive list of side quests, mini games and other content to keep players engaged either after or in the midst of the game's main story.

However, the game comes with a catch, as it is only available for subscribers of the highest tier of PlayStation Plus -- the Premium tier, which grants access to the Classics Catalog along with all the perks of the two tiers before it. The Classics Catalog offers a variety of games from the original PlayStation and the PS2 for free download for subscribers, with PS3 games also available to stream.

Mark Hamill Finally Meets Star Wars 'Mother' Natalie Portman

Like many classic PS1 games on modern consoles, The Phantom Menace will run using Sony's in-house emulation software, which means it will likely have a few quality-of-life improvements, such as a rewind function and a save state system. For those looking for a more fast-paced Episode I experience, the catalog also offers Star Wars Episode I: Racer, a racing title based on the pod-racing scene from the film.

As for other Star Wars games, the PS Plus Premium tier also offers classics like Republic Commando and Bounty Hunter as downloadable games along with both The Force Unleashed titles, which are available through streaming. For more modern titles, fans can pick up Star Wars Jedi Survivor or look forward to Ubisoft's upcoming open-world title Star Wars Outlaws , which is set to release later this year.

Women Have Been Shaping Star Wars From The Start - Which Is Why It's Time For A Female Director

Posted: January 3, 2024 | Last updated: January 4, 2024

  • Women have always played influential roles in shaping the Star Wars franchise, from Marcia Lucas to Kiri Hart and Carrie Beck.
  • While there have been female directors on Star Wars TV shows, there has yet to be a woman to direct a Star Wars movie.
  • Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's upcoming Star Wars film, New Jedi Order, will focus on Rey Skywalker and offer a fresh perspective on the Jedi Order.

Since the beginning of a galaxy far, far away, women have been shaping the franchise, which is why it's time for a woman to direct a Star Wars movie. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, director of the upcoming Star Wars: New Jedi Order , will be the first woman to direct a Star Wars movie. New Jedi Order will take place 15 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker and will focus on Rey Skywalker as she works to rebuild the Jedi Order. When asked about the film, Obaid-Chinoy made the following statement:

I'm very thrilled about the project because I feel what we're about to create is something very special. And we're in 2024 now, and it's about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.

Obaid-Chinoy's statement has become controversial. The reason for this focuses on the second sentence. Obaid-Chinoy's words imply that her introduction as director marks the first time that a woman has (at least significantly) influenced a Star Wars story. However, many people have disagreed with this idea, and for good reason .

How To Watch Star Wars Movies In Order

Star wars has always been shaped by women.

Not only has Star Wars always had complex, strong female characters such as Princess Leia Organa and Ahsoka Tano , but female staff have also been influential since the conception of a galaxy far, far away. For example, George Lucas' ex-wife, Marcia Lucas, worked as an editor on the original trilogy. As an editor, she did far more than just cut scenes together; s he shaped the narrative of Star Wars . She was willing to tell George Lucas when she thought he was wrong, and she was key to ensuring that many of the small, intimate moments that make Star Wars more than just an action movie stayed in the final cut.

Marcia was the one who insisted that the scene where Chewbacca yells at a small droid, causing it to squeal and zoom away, was included in the movie. She was also the one who made sure that Leia's Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope good luck kiss stayed in the movie. She continues to have a strong emotional connection to the franchise despite no longer working on it . She was devastated when she first watched Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace because she didn't think it was a very good movie, and that broke her heart. She wasn't a fan of the sequel trilogy, either.

Marcia Lucas wasn't the only woman who shaped Star Wars . A woman named Leigh Brackett wrote the original screenplay for Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back . Tragically, Brackett died of cancer before the screenplay was finalized . George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan used Brackett's screenplay as a jumping-off point for the creation of the final script. Further, while Brackett and Marcia are two important examples, they are far from the only women who have shaped Star Wars . Women have been involved throughout every movie and TV show in the franchise .

Women Have Led Star Wars' TV Shows As Well

Not only have women had a profound influence on Star Wars movies since the beginning of a galaxy far, far away, but they continue to lead Star Wars TV shows. For example, Kiri Hart, the Senior Vice President of Development at Lucasfilm, was a producer on Star Wars Rebels . Carrie Beck, the Vice President of Lucasfilm Animation and a member of Lucasfilm Story Group, has worked on several Star Wars TV shows. These are only two of the many influential women who have helped make Star Wars TV shows happen .

Despite their important contributions, very few women have acted as directors on Star Wars TV shows. There have only been three so far: The Mandalorian director Bryce Dallas Howard, The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi director Deborah Chow, and The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka director Steph Green. Leslye Headland, showrunner for the upcoming show The Acolyte , will be the first female showrunner on a Star Wars TV show. While Headland proves that directors aren't replacing showrunners on all projects, it's still clear that directors are taking on a bigger role. Because directors seem to be taking on more responsibility, having more female directors would be a big step for the Star Wars TV universe .

It's (Past) Time For A Woman To Direct A Star Wars Movie

Given that Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow, Steph Green, and Leslye Headland have all directed or run Star Wars TV shows, it is odd that a woman has yet to direct a Star Wars movie. While Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is wrong about women's influence on Star Wars , she isn't wrong that having a woman directing a Star Wars movie is exciting. With so much content within the franchise, four female directors/showrunners is a minuscule number. Since Hollywood hired fewer female directors in 2023 than in 2022, it is a step forward for Disney to make an effort to include more female directors in a galaxy far, far away .

When Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order movie will be released is not known, although it is expected to come out sometime between 2025 and 2029. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed the movie will be about the Jedi in crisis as the galaxy tries to decide if the Order is necessary or more trouble than it's worth given decades of war. This description suggests a departure from the typical Star Wars story, as up until now, the franchise has focused heavily on the necessity of the Order, despite its faults. This could offer a fresh perspective , and it will be interesting to see where Obaid-Chinoy takes her Star Wars story.

All Star Wars movies and TV shows are available to stream on Disney+.

Star Wars: New Jedi Order

The tenth mainline installment in the Star Wars franchise is the first movie to follow the sequel trilogy, where Mark Hamill's Luke, Carrie Fisher's Leia, and Harrison Ford's Han Solo gave their final farewell. After the release of The Rise of Skywalker, development on a direct sequel had become dormant as Disney shifted focus on other parts of the galaxy, namely, Disney+ shows such as The Mandalorian, Andor, and Ahsoka. However, a movie starring Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker was officially announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023.
