Expedition Yacht LARS Perfect for Chartering in Northern Europe

The 36.4m expedition yacht LARS , who began life as an ice class tug called ZEELEEUW, is the perfect vessel to explore the mystery and magic of Northern Europe and beyond.

Though it is not unusual for seagoing tugs to be converted into luxury superyachts when they reach the end of their working lives, the story of how ZEELEEUW was transformed is quite different. Originally built in the Netherlands in 1995 by Damen, she was created for the Dutch tug owner K K Damstra & Zn of Hoom. She was built to meet the requirements of BV Deep Sea, Ice Class II and was intended to be able to break through thick ice.

With a superstructure and mast made from aluminium and deck fittings from stainless steel, ZEELEEUW was intended to be a special yacht.  Sadly however, her construction slowed right down and she was never completed. Nevertheless, she was kept in good condition and anchored next to the owner’s residence in Hoom until she was sold in late 2010 to be converted into a superyacht.

The conversion was intended to create a superyacht capable of exploring the Arctic. Extensively restructured and refitted at the Stemat Shipyard in the Netherlands, she was given a new name to  cruise under – LARS. With new Caterpillar engines and a completely re-equipped engine room, her superstructure was re-shaped and rebuilt while her interior now features luxurious styling by Felix Buytendijk Yacht Design and can accommodate six charter guests in three staterooms along with a crew of three.

The conversion of LARS took just over a year and by 2012 she was fully equipped to undertake long and challenging charters to Northermost Europe and the Arctic. She is available to charter from €65,000 per week. Contact your charter broker for more details.

Built in steel and aluminium and delivered in 2020, the "off-roader" 500EXP model was designed by  Francesco Paszkowski Design  as Sanlorenzos's first true explorer offering.  Lars  sports a bronze hull and ice-white superstructure with a large aft deck for carrying toys or landing a helicopter. The broker said that  Lars  was upgraded to be "ice ready" with no limitations.

Endurance is a 110m expedition superyacht concept with styling inspired by Airstream

Expedition yachts take all shapes and sizes these days but practical necessity and reliability look to have been given prominence by the design consortium behind this new concept.

Here is an expedition yacht with a difference – namely, its size. Were this to be built it would be second only in size to the world’s largest sailing vessel, Sailing Yacht A (142.81m).

Endurance is all about independence and the ability for a luxury superyacht to really go off-grid. She has the capacity to carry sufficient stores for owner, guests and 35 crew to cruise unassisted for three months.

She has a 6,000 mile range – or a return trip across the Atlantic – under power at 16 knots.

The crazy world of gigayachts: inside some of the world’s largest private vessels

The concept originally came from superyacht captain Lars van Dinther. Together with design consultant Steve Howard he wanted to create something special and something speculative, a project they could have control of – free from the constraints of an owner’s personal vision.

As Howard remarked “we wanted to push the boat out a bit.”

Howard put together a design focus team called ‘EDGE’ (Endurance Design Group Exec), which includes Dykstra Naval Architects that did the hull lines and rig design, plus Mark Berryman and Andy Moore, both of whom Howard previously worked with at H2 Yacht Design.

They developed the lines plan, built a model and produced a detailed and workable plan and renderings to illustrate the project. Obviously at this scale, an owner would be able to specify all sorts of luxury items for the deck and interior.

The look is deliberately workmanlike. The deckhouse styling, for example, was inspired by the American Airstream caravan. “It’s seriously ocean going – designed to stay away from shipyards and marinas,” says Howard.

The tumblehome helps retain a classic yacht feel, but there’s no doubting the futuristic style – the remarkable glass transom for example resembles the mouth of a whale shark.

The deck of the Endurance is designed to separate crew from guests by keeping the navigation areas in and around the main wheelhouse forward. The aft end of the yacht is reserved for the privacy of owner and guests.

Kelly, you are right. The Chianti has what Carl calls an Expedition bow. Frankly, before he mentioned it I had never heard this expression... /Lars

The term "expedition" was used as a loose descriptive of Chianti. Let me explain... For many years, expedition's were big bow, blue water boats that looked more like small freightors. In recent years, a few designs evolved with these same "big bows", but had luxury yacht superstructures. Most luxury yachts in the past maintained a relatively constant amount of freeboard, with a slight graduation toward the bow. In recent years, a number of designs and new launches have adopted a much more aggressive amount of freeboard toward the bow, looking more like an expedition style hull. Quite simply, designs and demands have evolved toward hulls with greater rough water capability. The term "expedition" is not truly applicable anymore. At the time Lars designed Chianti, there were few (if any) luxury yacht hulls utilizing this design. Now... it is more the norm. Lars, you were ahead of your time.

I saw PERFECT HARMONY on 22 May at the Seaport Marina in Ijmuiden, The Netherlands. The yacht on the picture isn't PH as she has no mast with domes. Also the other Baron, C'EST LA VIE, has not such a mast, so she must be the second Baron OCEAN OF LOVE.

My choice would be Classic MY, but with added touches of all 3 of the other themes! No doubt the result would be condemned directly to the Rogues' Gallery Kelly

I am also in favour of a mix, my favorite today is the Triton from Delta which I think is a both contemporary and timeless expedition yacht design.
