Style of Yellowfins

Wylie Nagler, the founder, came up with the concept for the boats. In 1998, Nagler established Yellowfin Yachts with the goal of fusing high-end, quick-moving boat features with characteristics that offshore fishermen would adore, such as live-bait wells that aren’t jarring to the bait. He began with a 31-foot boat, completely designing the hull. The boats all have recognizable features, such as a slight rise in the deck that helps shed water when the boat is moving quickly and a transom curve that faces the water to enhance loading fish. Yellowfin boats are a perfect combination of a fishing boat with a performance boat.

Yellowfin’s company name includes the word “yachts,” which embodies their long-term objectives. Iconic Lines: From Bow To Stern, a Look At Yellowfin Yachts

First impressions may be everything, and ours was rather humble. The front office for Yellowfin Yachts in Bradenton, Florida is in a mixed use industrial park, but it hardly showcases the production prowess of this hometown boat builder. Known the world over for their top-quality fleet of hand-crafted inshore and offshore vessels, Yellowfin is an international player with a presence in Australia, Japan, Dubai, and the French Riviera. Yet their factory-direct approach to sales allows potential buyers to walk right in the front door and see the process for themselves, talk with fabricators, explore the virtually unlimited options for customization, and become immersed in the team atmosphere. They may be an internationally acclaimed boat builder, but their personalized approach to the building process and customer service has a sincere, down-home feel.

Started in 1998, Yellowfin got its beginnings from founder Wylie Nagler’s desire to hand craft a purpose-built center console fishing platform. At the time, Nagler saw the majority of “center console” fishing boats as little more than go-fast boats with rod holders. Leaning on his powerboat background and passion for fishing, Nagler designed and crafted the Yellowfin 31, and proceeded to put it on tour. Fishing in regional tournaments and taking it to boat shows, it wasn’t long before many excited anglers were asking about the new center console with the Carolina flare, stepped hull, and awesome fishing ability. The company still crafts their prototypes by hand today, lathing wooden mock-ups until perfection in style and functionality is attained. With their philosophy of “One boat at a time; one owner at a time,” Yellowfin has grown into a sprawling complex with over 220 employees, 11 models to choose from, and a new one on the way.

The operation in Bradenton currently produces approximately 70 inshore and 70 to 80 offshore boats per year, with an average customer wait time of roughly one year from when the order is placed to when the customer takes delivery of their new Yellowfin. The purchasing and build process is exceptionally personalized. Future owners can consult with the team to design their ideal fish-hunting machine, with virtually no level of customization considered impossible. Often a specific, or even unusual, customer request does not stay unique for long. Several options available, including the Mitchell box and the South Beach coffin box, were named for the customer(s) who requested them. Team members correspond regularly with customers as their Yellowfin is born, sharing pictures, video, and other updates from the layering of the domestically-sourced fiberglass through the final detailing process prior to the boat going out to the new owner for delivery.

Yellowfin builds 11 models in total, ranging from a 17-foot flats skiff up to the 42-foot offshore model. The storied flagship is the 36 Offshore; however, the 39 Offshore is up and- coming in popularity. Many boat builders have begun offering hybrid models in recent years- several models were recently featured at the Miami International Boat Show, garnering gobs of attention from enthusiasts and competitors alike. Yellowfin boasts two hybrid platforms: the 21 Hybrid, which is a cross between a flats boat and a bay boat; and the 26 Hybrid, which is a cross between a bay boat and an offshore boat. Whichever model a new owner chooses seems destined to serve them well into the future. And speaking of the future, it holds new possibilities for potential owners with the announcement of a new 55 Offshore model. The 55 will be a center console, and the task of crafting such a large and imposing fishing yacht is seen as a welcome challenge to the team in Bradenton. Other than that, details on this newest member to the Yellowfin lineup were exceptionally limited.

When they aren’t constructing the stuff of dreams for their customers, the team at

Yellowfin can be found hosting one of several charity engagements. In March, the Florida Skiff Challenge: a grueling 1,600-mile race between boat manufacturers to see who can make the journey from the Alabama-Florida state line to Cumberland Island, Georgia first. June in Hawk’s Cay in the Florida Keys plays host to the Yellowfin Owner’s Tournament, a family-oriented event which gives kids the opportunity to fish with experienced owners and win prizes. December rounds out the year with the Yellowfin Charity Classic and “Fill the Fin”, which collects toys for needy children- last year, Yellowfin filled a 36 Offshore to the gunwales with donated toys for Toys for Tots and The Children’s Home Network charities.

Fishability Test: Yellowfin 54 Offshore

We tested the boat rigged with four Yamaha 425 XTOs, ample muscle even for a boat this size. The Yellowfin got on plane and accelerated quickly and evenly, and I never lost sight of the horizon. We reached cruising speed in no time at all, and hit an honest 60.8 mph at wide-open throttle, burning 152 gph while turning 6,000 rpm. The motors were propped for carrying a full load of gear, live bait and crew, which could tally 14 or 15 members, if you filled every seat on the boat.

Speaking of seats, our test 54 had two V-bench seats forward, three lounge seats on the forward cabin top, four Release varnished-teak helm chairs, dual-row seating for four or five behind the helm, and a single aft-facing seat at the tackle center. No need for space-eating beanbags on this rig.

On each end of the dual-row seating are tackle-drawer storage units, with a Mase 4 kW generator under the aft-row seating, which can be customized. The back of the aft-row seating includes an aft-facing seat with two underlid work surfaces on each side ideal for bait and rig prep, and there’s also an Isotherm fridge and freezer strategically located on the rear of the back-row seating.

Gemlux Titanium pull-up cleats at the bow form a stainless anchor chute accessed through the top hatch for deployment. It features a spool windlass to keep the rode and chain neat.

A recessed bow rail wraps around the foredeck area, and the standard V-seating with backrests has storage underneath, complemented by a giant locker in the forward bilge.

There are four rod holders on each side of the forward-console lounge seats. Under the gunwales, on both sides of the console, are recesses for five dive tanks, and multiple storage bins of varying sizes that provide extensive stowage for tackle and dive gear.

The air-conditioned console hosts a queen berth forward with two hanging lockers, a large stand-up shower and head with vanity, galley with stainless sink, Isotherm refrigerator and storage cabinets. Fully aft is a U-shaped lounge with high-low table that turns into a full berth with the table down. A Pullman bunk can be added as an option.

The aft seat lifts up to gain entry into the equipment room under the helm deck, which houses the batteries, wiring and electronics components normally found under the console. Our test boat also had a Quick Gyro X13 mounted on the centerline, with good access for servicing.

Back on deck, a three-sided glass windshield protects the helm, where the dash accommodates up to three 24-inch screens, like the Garmin black-box units on our test boat, with an integrated CZone controller to run bilge and livewell pumps, lights and other accessories from the touchscreens, eliminating the need for switch panels on the console. Once the batteries are turned on, the electronics units come on as well, offering access to all virtual switches.

The console also features a pair of glove boxes; two AC vents; four drink holders; centerline helm and binnacle; Side Power bow-thruster, trim-tab and engine-trim controls; and the start/stop buttons placed upside down under the helm pod to keep them dry and out of the way.

There are monstrously deep and long in-deck fish boxes in the cockpit sole. The largest aligns with the under-gunwale sliding tuna doors so that fish caught can be pulled in through the door and directly into the fish box. Access to the molded bilge is through a large hatch on the centerline.

The transom houses a massive 100-gallon livewell with dual lids for added convenience, and there are four vertical rod holders on each side. The entire deck is molded for inlay flooring. Our test boat had Ocean Grip, but teak or other flooring could also be inlaid.

The test Yellowfin came with a full-size, molded hardtop complete with Gemlux outriggers, 15 aft rod holders, and mounting surfaces for radar, antennas, nav lights and stereo speakers. A marlin tower or full-gap tower are available options.

Development of the 54 Offshore took several years, but clearly it was time well-invested. The attention to detail is evident everywhere, and its performance, stability, styling, comfort and fishing functionality are sure to place Yellowfin’s new flagship among the leading center-consoles in its class.
