Marina district lighthouse.

1 Yacht Road Marina District

1 yacht road san francisco

Once there was a grand plan to construct two of these stunning stone lighthouses at the harbor entrance in the Marina District.

The harbor itself was originally built  as a lagoon for the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition of 1915.

The lighthouse was the idea of Captain B.P. Lamb of the Park Commission, who also suggested the general design of the tower.  The design followed that of Roman military watchtowers built for the Punic Wars.

Captain Lamb was quoted as saying, “Yachtsmen have been forced to rely on shore lights in making the harbor at night.”

The city moved the harbor entrance in the 1960s, but left this lighthouse in its original position.  Sadly this one has not been lit in years and can easily be missed on your walk to the San Francisco Yaht Club, or better yet, the  Wave Organ.

1 yacht road san francisco

According to San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department historian Christopher Pollock:

“This is not even a lighthouse by normal standards,” … “It’s squat, unmanned, and intended to be a beacon just for the yacht harbor, not necessarily to keep ships from crashing onshore.

“Think Alcatraz lighthouse or Point Bonita lighthouse,” he continues. “These are working lighthouses that are large, manned, and up high, to guide mariners in the fog.”

The park commission built the lighthouse in 1931 using cobblestones salvaged from the city streets as the seawall and paving around the structure, but the ornamental stones for the lighthouse walls came from the 35-room home of George A. Pope which once stood at Pacific and Divisidero and burned down on December 4th, 1929.

The lighthouse once had a  teak door made from a ladder from the USS Matsonia, today that door is cemented shut, as are the windows.

1 yacht road san francisco

It is possible that the lack of  the second tower can be explained by an article found in the  1980 Civil History of  the GGNRA Volume 2 Page 170: “In May 1931, construction of a twenty-five-foot high stone lighthouse on “the Saint Francis spit” to mark the entrance of the yacht harbor was completed, most likely under the same relief program sponsored by the city in cooperation with local business men.  The depression, however, soon thereafter made it impossible for the city to finance further improvements at the Yacht Harbor

Apparently, there are stairs inside, but no grand spiral staircase as can be found in most lighthouses, and the light once held green and red colored glass.

According to the  Park Commission, the 1,000-watt fixture was automated when it was first turned on, on October 22, 1931.

The lighthouse was seen briefly in the 1951 film noir, The House on Telegraph Hill.

The Weekly Dirt: Watershed ruling changes condo buyout landscape

One developer attempting a buyout in Miami Beach is giving unit owners one last chance following the court’s decision

Weekly Dirt: Watershed ruling changes condo buyout landscape

Many condo terminations “just won’t work” following a recent appeals court ruling in Florida.

The ones that we have reported on over the past year or so are all likely in some sort of limbo, or dead in the water, sources tell me . Condo buyouts, the precursor to developers terminating associations to eventually develop new projects on the sites, were already hard to accomplish.

It’s a little more technical than this, but the ruling (for a longer explainer, feel free to catch up here ) means that for any condominium association where a termination requires 100 percent buy-in by the unit owners, a developer probably can’t go in, buy the majority of units and vote to change the rules without 100 percent support. Some would take this route as a “back-door” way to push terminations forward.

The Third District Court of Appeals’ ruling follows a lawsuit brought by a group of unit owners against Two Roads Development, which paid $150 million for the majority of units at Biscayne 21, an Edgewater condo in Miami, and has been preselling units at an Edition Residences planned on the site. Two Roads has said it plans to take the issue to the Florida Supreme Court if it does not secure a rehearing.

Not every condo declaration has the same language as Biscayne 21, but many of the buildings targeted by developers do because they were built around the same time, before the 1970s.

Some expect that developers will only pursue properties where the association agrees upfront to sell, with clear terms and enforceable deadlines. Increased transparency and fewer opportunities for holdout owners could mean that deals at buildings with the same declaration language could become less lucrative for developers.

At Castle Beach Club, an oceanfront condo in Miami Beach that David Martin’s Terra has been trying to purchase for $500 million, the developer sent out a last chance offer to unit owners following the ruling in the Biscayne 21 case.

In the letter, which was obtained by The Real Deal , Terra wrote that it is “willing to continue with the purchase of Castle Beach provided we can achieve 100% percent participation and avoid any of the legal issues brought up by that recent ruling.”

It’s unclear if that will happen.

Getting unanimous approval on anything is tough, including agreeing on the weather outside, one attorney joked with me.

What we’re thinking about: Who’s the buyer of the Palm Beach estate asking $187.5 million ? It’s the priciest home on the market in South Florida, and it went into contract last week. Send me a note at [email protected]

CLOSING TIME

Residential: Convenience store chain owner G. Robert Sheetz sold the waterfront spec mansion at 415 East Alexander Palm Road in Boca Raton’s Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club for $25.9 million . A land trust purchased the 0.8-acre property.

Commercial: Bethesda Hospital, a subsidiary of Baptist Health South Florida, sold a former medical office campus in Boynton Beach for $37.7 million . A joint venture between Foundry Commercial and Wheelock Street Capital acquired the vacant 30.7-acre site at 3800 South Congress Avenue, records show.

NEW TO THE MARKET

A renovated 7,800-square-foot home on the ocean in North Palm Beach hit the market for $39.5 million , almost double its previous sale price two years ago. The five-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bathroom house at 11432 Turtle Beach Road is listed with James Kenny of K2 Realty. A company led by Dan Lonergan and Sara Camara paid $22 million for the property in 2022.

A thing we’ve learned

If you accidentally invert the latitude and longitude for properties in Miami, you’ll end up in Antarctica, according to my colleague Adam Farence.

Elsewhere in Florida

  • A group of about 50 home insurers operating in Florida turned a profit for the first time in seven years, netting nearly $150 million, Newsweek reports . Soaring premiums have contributed to an insurance crisis in the state, where the average homeowner’s premium rose 42 percent compared to 2022, to $6,000 a year.
  • Walt Disney and DeSantis reached a settlement in their highly publicized legal battle over the district, home to Walt Disney World resort, NPR reports . The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board will work with Disney to update its comprehensive plan. A last-minute deal that gave Disney power over all development decisions was found to be “null and void” under the terms of the new settlement. DeSantis went after Disney after former Disney CEO Bob Chapek said he would work to overturn the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

On the way to the Wave Organ, I've passed by this "Lighthouse" a dozen or so times over the years and it always struck me as an oddity. There are no plaques commemorating this structure, nor did I find much information on it. However odd, I was still awed by the beauty of this stubby beast and all of its imperfections. Purists say it's not a real lighthouse since it's not tall enough to qualify as one, and it hasn't been lit in decades. Actually, this lighthouse looks more like a tower from a castle that was chopped down and relocated here. The cobblestone design is because it's made from salvaged materials from the streets of San Francisco in 1931. Once upon a time, it had a working door and windows that were subsequently boarded up. Maybe it was to prevent vandals or even homeless from sneaking in. Who knows? But a homeless in San Francisco? ***rolls eyes*** The park commission built the lighthouse as the entrance piece for the Marina Harbor, and they had plans of constructing two of these. Yeah...stubby, bulky, stony, rugged, gritty, bouldered, solid pieces of twin towers. However, that plan never materialized and the lighthouse has remained solo ever since. Apparently, it was lit with a 1,000-watt fixture that was fully automated on Thursday, October 22, 1931...that was 90 years ago. Again, not much is known when it stopped operating as a lighthouse as it was never intended to be one. It still looks pretty cool though and majestic in its own way. It also reminds me of a "Rook" on a large piece of chess board as it's also brawny and sturdy looking. It looks like it could stand a tsunami, although you wouldn't wanna be here should one ever occur. It may have the girth, but not the height. I don't care what they say about yah! You're the real deal in my eyes...it's a real keeper. So the next time you're in the Marina Harbor, keep a lookout for it.

YOUTH SAILING

1 yacht road san francisco

Waterfront Director:  Brett Bastien Program Manager:  Head Coaches: High School Sailing – CFJ:  Corey Quillen Youth Sailing – RS Feva: TBD Assistant Coaches:  Brett Bastien, Brett Davis, Sarah Davis

The GGYC Youth Sailing Foundation’s mission is to provide safe and fun youth sailing programs for all Bay Area kids. Our ethos is teaching Life Skills through Sailing. Our goals are to provide youth sailing programs that are fun, educational, and accessible. GGYC’s waterfront is a great place for student sailors to learn sailing, racing, and build lifelong friendships.

The High School Racing Program is open to the public and currently hosts teams from Lowell, School of the Arts, Drew, Galileo, and Riordan Archbishop.  Junior Varsity students learn basic boat handling skills and racing rules on the collegiate flying junior (CFJ). Varsity sailors learn racing tactics on the double-handed  CFJs  and more advanced  C420.   When not training on the CFJ, GGYC youth members are encouraged to train on the club’s fleet of C420s, RS Fevas, Lasers and J22s.

Over the past 25 years, GGYC coaches have coached and mentored hundreds of bay area youth and students from the School of the Arts, Mission, Lowell, Galileo, Gateway, Lycee Francais, French American, Drew, Riordan Archbishop and City Arts & Tech. GGYC is committed to building a diverse sailing community and welcomes students from all backgrounds. We are very excited about our programs in 2020 and look forward to a great year of sailing!

High School Race Team

Requirements The ability to swim 50 yards is required. Enthusiasm, commitment and a sincere desire to learn to race in regattas are essential.  Students need to have their own wet-suit, sailing boots, gloves, lifejacket, and a bailer (aka Arizona Ice Tea jug).  The following forms are required before sailing:

  • Student Information
  • Medical Information and Directives
  • Liability waiver (parents please print, sign and bring to first practice)

Fall season runs Sept-Dec and is limited to 25 students. Registration fees offsets coaching, sailing expenses, travel costs and boat maintenance. Parents are required to pay registration fees for regattas, normally $25 per day.  Scholarships are available to qualifying students.  For more information about scholarships email the waterfront director at [email protected]

Regattas provide great opportunities for students to build confidence racing, working on their leadership skills and life long sailing friends. Coaches, students, and parents collectively decide which regattas to attend. Parents are responsible for student regatta registration, transportation, and daily lunches.  A GGYC coaches will attend each regatta on the GGYC coach boat for safety and coaching.

Support the Students The GGYC Youth Sailing Programs are only possible through the great volunteer efforts of our club coaches, parents, sponsors, members and donors. We believe youth sailing provides today’s youth with invaluable life skills in teamwork, confidence, trust and friendship.

If you would like to become a volunteer or donate to the GGYC Youth Sailing Foundation, please contact the Waterfront Director at  [email protected] .

Thank you for visiting and we look forward to the upcoming sailing season!

Thank you to our sponsors and volunteers, you make GGYC Youth Sailing possible!
