An Arthur Ransome weekend at the Norfolk Broads Yacht Club

A celebration of arthur ransome’s norfolk broads stories and boats was held at the norfolk broads yacht club’s open day over a glorious may day bank holiday weekend, as sophie neville reports….

For the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, I travelled up to Wroxham with my camera and memory stick for the Norfolk Broads Yacht Club’s Open Day. They were celebrating life on the Broads in the 1930s, along with the books by Arthur Ransome that are set in East Anglia.

We were blessed by such glorious weather that almost everybody seemed to be sailing when I arrived.

A number of vessels that appeared in the BBC TV adaptations of “Coot Club” and “The Big Six” entitled “Swallows and Amazons Forever!” were on display at the club, including  Titmouse , the dinghy belonging to Tom Dudgeon in the story, that normally resides at Hunter’s Yard in Norfolk. She is no longer seaworthy.

Tom’s punt, the   Dreadnaught,   was pulled up alongside an elegant Edwardian skiff called   Joan B   that was once set adrift at Horning by George Owden. She had been brought along by Pat Simpson, a member of the Norfolk Broads Yacht Club.

Pippa,   a classic broads river-cruiser with dark sails belonging to Geoff and Rose Angell, was cast adrift at Horning in the dark of night. She came to no harm and was now out on the water, racing against a 1904 yacht with white sails, number 4, called S wallow .

‘White Boats’ or ‘Yare and Bure one-designs’ originally brought out in 1908, were also racing as they have been since the Farland twins, Port and Starboard, crewed for their father in “Coot Club”. Ransome referred to a white boat called  Grizzled Skipper,   which belonged to Chris Shallcross, but no one could remember which of the 140-odd White Boats registered was used in the series. You can see a fleet of White Boats here racing at Horning, the Swan Inn in the background.

I spotted ‘Brown Boats’, a Broads’ one-design with a distinctive counter stern and spoon bow, which would also have been seen racing in the 1930s. They were first built in 1907 and although some were lost during the war there are still 88 in existence, although some now have fibre glass hulls. Number 61, called  Hanser , is owned by Danny Tyrrell.

Lullaby,   which played the   Teasel   in the series, was up at Horsey Mere with others from her fleet, but we had her costume on display. It is a varnished transom painted with the name Teasel.  Janca,  the motorboat which played the infamous  Margoletta , hired by the Hullabaloos, was unable to come as she is currently being renovated, but   Water Rail,  a Herbert Woods Delight Class B 1930s cruiser belonging to Liz Goodyear was safely moored alongside other classic boats. She appeared in the background of several scenes in the television drama.

I then spotted a distinctive burgee that took me back thirty-five years:

‘BPS’ being short for the Bird Preservation Society – it was the flag belonging to the  Death and Glory , flying next to ‘the little old chimney’ made from a galvanised bucket.

Originally a German lifeboat washed up on the beach at Southwold, she had been bought for the series by Pat Simpson of Stalham Yacht Services, who found her moored at Snape in Suffolk.

Pat kept her for his sons to take out on the Norfolk Broads and it has been operated by children as  Death and Glory,   ever since.

It must have taken a bit of work to make her sea-worthy but tarred and fitted-out correctly, she closely resembles Arthur Ransome’s illustrations, the homemade cabin mysteriously larger inside than out.

I was asked to sign a copy of “The Big Six” bought along by Professor John Farrington from Aberdeen, who acquired the   Death and Glory   for his own children in 1989.

He told me: ‘I took them to the boatyard and suggested they climbed aboard. “Get on!” ‘They were aged ten and eleven.’

‘”But what about the owners?” they asked.’

“You are the owners,” I told them.’ He had just bought it for them as an unexpected present. ‘Before long they rowed it from Stalham to Sutton and back.’

This year is the 80th Anniversary of The Norfolk Broads Yacht Club, which is why they have a 1930’s theme running through their calendar. The day proved a true celebration of traditional boats that would have been seen back then.

I had been asked to give a talk about filming the series, but that will be another story. The re-mastered DVD, for which I wrote the DVD extras,  is available on Amazon here .

You can read more about how these boats were used in the series  here   and on the  Norfolk Broads Yacht Club website .

If you have any additional information about these boats or want to ask questions about making the book adaptions, then   please add your comments here .

A beautiful city in England's Norfolk County

From Norwich take the A1151 to Wroxham. Entering Wroxham, and after crossing the railway bridge and immediately before passing Shell station on the left, turn right at mini roundabout and take road towards Salhouse. After 100 yards, follow the road round to the right and in 250 yards take a left hand turn, signposted to The Avenue and Wroxham Broad. At the T-junction, there is a sign to Norfolk Broads Yacht Club where you turn right into a private drive to the Club. Follow this road until you reach the Club premises. Norfolk is connected to the rest of the United Kingdom by a efficient and modern road network. The M11, A11, A12 and A14 are the major trunk roads from the South, East and London, and the A14, A17 and A47 from the Midlands, the North and Scotland. The journey time by rail from London to Norwich or King's Lynn is around 1 hour 40 minutes, and local services connect Norwich with Great Yarmouth, Cromer and Sheringham. Car and passenger ferries operate daily between Harwich and the Hook of Holland, and Hamburg and Esbjerg, and Norwich International Airport offers flights to / from Amsterdam, Paris, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Manchester, with connection to more than 300 destinations worldwide between them.

Norwich History

Norwich is a city located in the eastern part of England and has a rich history dating back to the Roman times. Here are some key points about Norwich's history:

  • Roman Era: Norwich was originally a Roman settlement called Venta Icenorum, which was founded in the 1st century AD. It served as the capital of the Iceni tribe, which was led by Boudica, a famous warrior queen.
  • Anglo-Saxon Era: After the Roman Empire's decline, the Anglo-Saxons took control of Norwich in the 5th century AD. It became an important trading center due to its location on the River Wensum.
  • Norman Era: In 1066, William the Conqueror invaded England and took control of Norwich. He built a castle and a cathedral, which still stand today. Norwich became a prosperous city during the Middle Ages due to its wool trade.
  • Industrial Revolution: In the 18th and 19th centuries, Norwich became a center for textile production, especially for the production of worsted wool. The city's population grew rapidly during this period.
  • World War II: During World War II, Norwich was heavily bombed by the German Luftwaffe. Many historic buildings were destroyed, but some, such as the cathedral, survived.
  • Modern Era: Norwich has continued to develop and prosper in the modern era. It has become a center for education, with two universities located in the city. It is also known for its cultural attractions, such as the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, which is one of the oldest arts festivals in the UK.

An introduction to this site

I am born and bred on the Norfolk Broads, and for most of my life I have had the pleasure of sailing here on everything from the smallest dinghy (admittedly about 15 stones ago) up to each of the remaining wherries. I was for 20 years Managing Director of The Norfolk Broads Yachting Co, one of the oldest names in Broads Yachting and I am privileged to have worked alongside some of the most skilled tradesmen to be found. In that time I have, along with many others with a like interest, amassed much information on the place where we live and take our pleasure.

This web-portal is not by any means the authoritative reference on the Norfolk Broads nor anything approaching it, there are many that know a lot more than me and may have far more interesting material to impart, but this is simply my contribution as an information point for those that are looking for more on this, one of the finest inland waterways in the world.

Much of my interest surrounds the yester-year of the Broads, and particularly the history of yacht racing that took root here over 200 years ago and flourishes to this day. I am sometimes able to provide information on old sailing craft, via an extensive archive, including one of the only complete collections of Lloyds Yacht Registers still in existence, with every published volume from 1878 through to 1980.

Included for your interest, are galleries of quite atmospheric black and white photographs from days gone by, along with more recent pictures and links to other sites. The site is very much work in progress, there will be further additions over time but for the moment, I hope you enjoy our modest contribution.

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!

I've been here several times during two business trip in Moscow. The overall quality for both service and food is absolutely top-notch, plus the location is very unique.

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.

An Insider's Guide to Moscow Nightlife

Nightlife

As a city that never sleeps, Moscow is known for its vibrant nightlife as much as for its stunning architecture. Having a plethora of choice, you may need someone to guide guide you through the club scene of Russia’s capital. Read on for the best places to take you through the night.

One of Moscow’s oldest nightclubs, Propaganda is an iconic spot that’s been around since the 1990s. Featuring deliberately shabby interiors, Propaganda, affectionately called “ propka ” by regulars, still gathers crowds even on weekdays. The club is particularly favored for scoring world-class DJs, hosting gay parties on Sundays and offering tasty and inexpensive food .

7 Bolshoy Zlatoustinsky Pereulok, Moscow, Russia , +7 495 624 5732

Another legendary spot, frequented by the cool crowd, this bar was founded by celebrated Russian designer Denis Simachev. Fancier and pricier than Propaganda, it’s worth a visit if only for eclectic interiors and salmon pizza.

Tiny and nondescript, Nauka i Iskusstvo (‘Science and Art’) is all about the music . Although there are no fancy cocktails, glitzy interiors or bohemian entourage, the club hosts some of the best electronic parties, hip music gigs and cool designer shows.

13/15 Nastavnichesky Pereulok, bld.3, Moscow, Russia

One of Moscow’s quirkiest nightclubs, Squat ¾ occupies the basement of the former Central Baths building. Instagrammed by Moscow’s it-girls, the club is famous for gothic techno-balls and bohemian raves. Apart from the club and a bar, it is also home to a Greek cafe, barber shop and fashion store.

3 Teatralny Proyezd, Bld. 4, Moscow, Russia , +7 967 162 6062

The newest venue on the list, Pluton is located on the premises of the hip design center Artplay. Despite the high ceilings of a former industrial building and tiled walls, Pluton feels strangely homely and comforting. Opened in 2017, this is not a nightclub in the traditional sense. Pluton promotes all kinds of events: from cathartic ambient, to jazz music to art-performances.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
