A Beginner’s Guide to Chartering a Yacht

With the pandemic driving a boom in superyacht charters , more and more people are taking to the water for their first yachting experience. But while some superyachts can cost more than a million a week to charter, you don’t need to outlay seven figures for your own yachting vacation.

Wondering what else you need to know before stepping on board for the very first time? We’ve turned to experts in the yachting industry for their insider intel on how to charter a yacht like a pro—from how much it will run you, to where to go, and well beyond. Read on.

Do I need a charter broker, and how do I find one?

It’s a charter broker’s job to match you with the right yacht and crew—and then take the lead in planning the entire experience. Professional bodies such as MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association act as a database of industry-recognized professionals. But the best source for finding a charter broker is often your own network. “Building up a relationship with a charter broker is very important,” says Jacqui Lockhart, a Monaco-based broker at Camper & Nicholsons International . “If possible, look for a recommendation from a friend.”

Once you’ve found the right broker, communication with them will be key. “Take the time to be as detailed with your preferences, such as dietary requirements, likes and dislikes, and preferred activities, as possible,” says London-based broker Charles Crane of Edmiston . “This will give us and the crew the best information to make the charter a success and tailored to perfection.”

How much should I be prepared to spend?

“The entry point is around $40,000 for a week on a yacht 82-feet upwards that can sleep six people," says Lockhart. What can take first time charterers by surprise is that this isn’t an all-inclusive figure. “The charter fee covers the hire, the crew, the insurance—everything that’s linked to the yacht,” Lockhart continues. Anything specifically for the client is extra—including food and beverages, fuel, and dockage. As a rule of thumb, budget for an extra 30 percent on top of the baseline charter figure for these extras, which goes into a fund known as the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA). At the end of the charter, it is also customary to tip the crew; between 10 and 20 percent of the charter fee is a guideline figure. There may also be Value Added Tax (VAT) to pay on the charter rate, depending on the country of embarkation.

At the smaller end of the charter fleet, more opportunity exists for single-cabin bookings rather than whole yacht charters. This year in the Caribbean , Sheila Ruffin of Soca Yacht Charters has launched a “Stranger on the Seas” package. Prices start at around $6,000 per person—all-inclusive—on catamarans between 48 and 60 feet. “This allows couples the opportunity to mix and mingle with other couples for an adventurous and social yacht charter on the Caribbean Sea,” says Ruffin.

What destinations are best suited to first-time charterers?

“For first-timers, I wouldn’t recommend a remote destination,” says Captain Kelly Gordon of Freddy , a 106-foot charter yacht based out of the Bahamas . “When it’s hard to get to, that eats up some of your valuable time and can also take some of the fun out of it.”

While yachts are heading towards unchartered waters such as Antarctica with increasing frequency, cruising grounds in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean are classic destinations for a reason. “For the first-time charterer in these locations, there will be more yacht options to choose from, proven cruising grounds with known and safe anchorages, well-connected and easy access hubs to ensure smooth passage to embark and disembark the vessel as well as the ability to source most provisions that guests may want,” says Crane.

The key ingredient? The crew.

Although much of the focus is on securing the right yacht, the secret to the success of a charter is its crew. “Put simply, the crew make the difference between a good charter yacht and a bad one,” says Crane. Today’s crew are increasingly versatile. “They may also be a diving or yoga instructor, personal trainer, fisherman, or sommelier,” he continues.

The crew also knows your cruising area better than anyone else. “Be sure to pick their brain on fun things to do. They often love the opportunity to come up with fun activities and games, whether for kids or adults,” says Lotte Barker-Hahlo, a London-based charter broker at Burgess .

The level of hospitality from crew on most yachts often convert first-time charters into repeat customers. “The attention to detail from the crew is unsurpassed by any other luxury holiday,” says Barker-Hahlo. “From the unpacking of your suitcase to being offered a drink before you’ve even realized you’re thirsty, it’s 24-hour care and service.”

Gordon says that much of the feedback she receives at the end of a first-time charter is why didn’t we do this earlier? “People are always surprised at how we take the time to get to know their needs before they have even arrived. We really do study those preference sheets!”

Think carefully about who else you want on board

Another important factor to a successful yacht vacation? Your fellow travelers. This is a specific type of vacation, which should narrow your list of invitees. “Strongly consider who you vacation with when chartering a yacht,” urges Ruffin. “Unlike other vacation options, yachts are very intimate and exclusive. Choose to share your water adventure with those you like and will enjoy on the water for a week or more.” Maybe, even for veteran yachties, that's the sagest advice of all.

How to Charter a Boat

Find a Charter Near You

The most common is the bareboat sailing charter. You work with a charter company to reserve a boat that you’ll provision, navigate, berth and command on your own. This is called bareboat because you will be the captain creating the itinerary, sailing, anchoring and caring for the boat yourself. A level of sailing experience is needed.

Most bareboat charters are done on sailing monohulls or catamarans although more companies are now offering motor yachts in bareboat service. Bareboat charter can be done in popular areas around the world but also in your local waters via sailing or boat clubs that offer everything from daysailers to 25-foot bowriders and pontoon boats .

Bareboat doesn’t mean bare service. Most charter companies will:

• Help you select a vessel for specific dates
• Offer partial or full provisioning
• Provide charts and a briefing to share highlights of local attractions, information on hazards
• Walkthrough a tutorial on the boat’s equipment

There are several global companies that specialize in charters as well as many second and third tier providers. These latter ones may provide good customer service but their boats are typically older or more sparsely equipped but they’re also more cost effective. Online research will help you narrow down which companies offer fleets in which parts of the world.

The pros of bareboat chartering are you pick your specific location and make all the decisions including where you go and how long you stay. The challenges include having to know how to sail, dock and manage a boat and having a level of local knowledge to handle safety issues, language barriers and cultural differences.

Crewed Charter

The captain manages the boat and usually takes you to the most popular parts of the cruising grounds. He or she will know the details of what to see, where to eat, and how to sail. They’re the responsible party in case anything breaks or goes wrong so your vacation is more about relaxing rather than working.

The downside of crewed charter is that your captain is on your vessel with you and therefore a part of the group at all times. A professional captain also adds to the charter fee and is usually tipped at the end of the charter for good service.

Cabin Charter

Charters by the cabin are crewed but instead of renting a whole boat, you pay for a cabin on a boat that is shared with others. The pros include having a knowledgeable captain who provides expertise and safety and may agree to also teach the basics. Cabin charters are also cheaper when you don’t have a group of like-minded friends who want to split the cost of a boat.

The downside of cabin charters includes being on a boat with strangers. This can be a great way to meet people or a long week of putting up with personalities you don’t care for. It also means that the captain will try to appease the majority in where to go and what to do.

Yacht Charter

Although arguably a 50-foot catamaran may be called a yacht, true yacht charters typically involve luxurious crewed superyachts over 80 feet. These vessels are generally all-inclusive (food, fuel, alcohol, dockage, etc.) and provide a captain, mate, chef and perhaps other crew who are dedicated to running the vessel and serving your specific needs. Expenses are generally paid via an advanced provisioning allowance (APA), which is added to the cost of the vessel.

Superyachts generally stay in one region for a season and then move to new cruising grounds. Costs vary with the size of the boat, number of crew, amenities and location of the yacht and can run from $10,000 to in excess of $300,000 per week.

Fishing Charter

Fishing charters should include the cost of the captain and vessel, fuel and dockage. In some cases food and beverages may be added at an extra cost. If the charter is overnight, the boat should provide heads (bathrooms) and berths (beds). Most charters will allow you to keep your catch assuming it’s legal and some will also filet it for you and keep it on ice.

Fishing charter boats vary dramatically in equipment, size and amenities. It’s best to research the company and its captains and boats prior to payment. Catching fish is usually not guaranteed but if the captain works hard to fulfill your expectations, a tip of 15-20% is standard.

In the end, chartering is a cost-effective way to get out on the water and your boating will be all fun and no maintenance.

Before moving forward with your yacht rental, it’s important to keep these points of consideration in mind.

How much money do you have to spend on a yacht? If your budget is large, you may not find yourself limited by things like size or duration. However, if you don’t want to break the bank on your charter, it’s important to consider the total amount you have to spend, including any incremental costs that might occur, like fuel or paying a crew. Know the maximum limit for your next trip before you spend time pricing potential options.

Prices vary depending on where you are going, the size of the yacht, and the duration of your trip. A week on a smaller yacht or a catamaran may start at around 10,000 USD, while a larger 100-foot yacht will likely be in the 50,000 USD to 80,000 USD range. Superyachts or megayachts may cost 150,000 USD or more for a week-long adventure.

Note that taxes or value-added tax (VAT) may apply based on where you are coming from and where you are going, so keep this in mind as well. VAT and other taxes are generally not included in the base price of a rental.

Inclusive or expense-based charters

Most sailing yacht rentals fall into two distinct categories: inclusive or expense based. Much like inclusive resort stays , inclusive yachts provide everything you will need to enjoy a trip, including all crew members, food and drink, any planned excursions, and all amenities. These tend to be more expensive trips but allow guests to determine ahead of time what they will be spending per person.

Other yacht charters will be priced as a base rate with any other features, such as the use of a captain and crew, fuel costs, and docking fees, as additional expenses. These are owed on top of the cost of the yacht and can vary greatly. In general, estimated incremental expenses are paid, at least in part, by an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) of around 35 percent of the cost of the yacht. This is a lump sum paid up front to cover expected expenses. If the entire amount is not used, guests may receive a refund. However, if costs exceed this payment, an additional amount may be owed at the end of the trip.

Inclusive charters provide an up-front rate that can allow for easy budget planning. However, expense-based charters can be more affordable for travelers willing to do extra leg work.

Trip duration and destinations

In general, fuel prices are owed on top of the base price of a private yacht, which means that where you’re going will become a factor in how much you are willing to spend. Those planning to visit many different destinations may find themselves facing steeper fuel charges than those who simply want a fishing trip in the same general area. Once you know how far you plan to travel, it becomes easier to estimate how much more may be owed in costs related to fuel during your charter.

Boat size for yacht charter

As with many things in life, bigger isn’t always better. While a larger yacht may seem like a better way to enjoy a vacation, going too large may simply result in wasted space – or wasted money.

A mega-yacht is fun, but it’s not necessary and will likely end up coming with higher rates and steeper fuel costs. Instead, most yacht charter clients are best served by putting money toward a comfortable luxury experience as well as the right crew. A great captain and a classically-trained chef are worth far more than an extra few feet, so be sure to prioritize comfort over size. In general, 100 to 120 feet in length is an appropriate size for family trips. Before you begin the process of evaluating yacht charters, be sure you invest time in planning your trip, including point of departure. While there are yacht charters leaving from many coastal communities, be aware that the majority of options are found in cities known for boating, such as Fort Lauderdale and Miami in the U.S.

Once you are reasonably sure of the duration of your trip, where you want to go, what you want to spend, and what size of yacht you need, determine where you will be departing if you’re leaving home to do so. But don’t book the first charter you find. Instead, do the same due diligence you would in booking a hotel room or resort stay.

Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.

Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”

In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:

• All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
• Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.

What can you expect to pay for a catamaran, a sailing vessel, or motored yacht? Here’s a quick overview of the average cost to rent a yacht (not including extra expenses) for the most common types available:

Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices

Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:

• The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
• Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
• Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters,   BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.

Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter

In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:

Advanced Provisioning Allowance

The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.

In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.

Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)

Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:

• The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
• BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
• Croatia – VAT: 13%
• Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
• France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
• Greece – VAT: 12%
• Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
• Montenegro – NO VAT
• New England – NO TAX
• Spain – VAT: 21%
• Turkey – NO VAT

Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.

Crew Gratuity

While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.

Delivery Fees

While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

However, even though you try your best to maximize your time on board, there are still weeks or even months when the boat’s unused and the crew ‘underutilized’. When your boat is just sitting in the marina, it’s just costing you money.

How many weeks can I charter my yacht?

For luxury yachts, you can expect your yacht to be booked for a minimum of 6-12 weeks a year, depending on the season.

The average number of weeks is higher for chartering sailboats and catamarans, usually about 14-20 weeks.

What to expect of a yacht charter management company? 

With the right agency for yacht charter management , you can reap all the benefits of chartering your own yacht - offset operational costs, keep your crew sharp and your boat in top shape, as well as build a brand reputation. 

The role of such a company is to provide consulting, support and help you achieve maximum booking through thoughtful promotion. 

Here’s how that works in the example of Magnum:

Once a yacht owner decides to partner with our agency, we both sign the Central Booking Agreement. It states the rights and obligations of the owner, as well as the rights and obligations of us as a central agency. In it we also define the price list according to which the charter service for a particular vessel will be charged. 

The agreement can be signed for a definite period (1 year) or for an indefinite period and can be terminated via written notice (from either party).

Bookings, promotion & payments

Once we sign the Central Booking Agreement with the boat owner, we focus all our efforts on promotion and positioning the boat on the market. It takes some time for the yacht to become "recognized" on the market but since we have access to a large global booking system through which we receive inquiries (YACHTFOLIO), this process doesn’t take too long.

After receiving an inquiry from a potential client, we send them a detailed offer with the price and presentation materials (brochure, crew profile, etc.), to give them a complete and better impression of the yacht. If the client confirms the booking, we sign the MYBA contract. The contract is signed by all the parties involved in the booking process - the client (charterer), broker, stakeholder and the yacht owner. 

Payment to the yacht owner is made in such a way that half of the amount to be paid to the owner is paid on the day of the boarding, and the remaining amount on the day of unloading (or the first working day, if unloading day is during the weekend).

The responsibilities of the yacht owner 

If you decide to charter your yacht, here’s what’s expected of you as the owner:

• During the term of the Central Booking Agreement, the yacht owner is not allowed to enter a business partnership with another yacht charter agency and is obliged to refer all agents who may contact him to his central agent.   
• The yacht owner mustn’t promote his yacht independently or without the consent of his central agent.  
• The owner must deliver professional photographs of the boat to the agency.   
• The owner is obliged to invoice his charters in accordance with the regulations of the Republic of Croatia.  
• The yacht owner is obliged to ensure the registration of the vessel and to have valid insurance policies.  
• The yacht owner must provide other documentation and take actions that precede the provision of accommodation services on board.  
• The yacht owner is obliged to provide an adequate crew in accordance with the size of the boat and the uniforms for all crew members.  
• The yacht owner is obliged to sign the charter agreements on time and report any problems or delays to the agency as soon as possible.  
• The boat must be adequately prepared for chartering - that includes cleaning, equipment procurement, as well as accommodation, uniforms & training for the crew members.  
• The yacht owner must have a registered company and be able to issue invoices.

Bareboat Charter 101 – All You Need to Know

Bareboating is a great way to spend your holidays on the water. You can sail whenever or wherever you decide, you have your own privacy, and it’s affordable! Like everything else in life, planning is the key to having a successful charter vacation. Here is the bareboat charter 101 to help you find all the important information you need, such as the process, forms of payment, paperwork, and many other things that surround the chartering of a bareboat:

What is a Bareboat Charter?

A bareboat charter is a form of chartering arrangement where you rent a well-equipped yacht with no crew or provisions provided as part of the agreement. In this case, you must provide evidence to the charter company showing that you have qualifications or had solid sailing experience in the past. The company may also need a copy of your sailing license to confirm; whether it is accepted in a specific country or area, you plan to visit.

Bareboat Charter Requirement

Before being handed over the vessel, you must demonstrate that you have coastal experience on boats comparable to the one you just chartered. For a potential skipper, the charter company may require a sailing resume, a US Coast Guard Captains License (in some areas), and a certificate of reputable skippering or bareboat sailing course.

As a skipper, you should be familiar with all the basic boat handling procedures, including, but not limited to, docking and anchoring. You should also know the rules of sailing and have knowledge of basic seamanship, navigation (in different conditions), and piloting.

When to Book the Boat

The question of when to charter a bareboat vessel for sailing pretty much depends on the conditions you like sailing in and where you would want to visit. For instance, if you have a distinct preference for cruising in heavy or light air, you’ll need to ask about the average wind speed of the target area during the time frame you’re considering going on vacation.

The months designated as high-season in various sailing destinations usually tend to be the most desirable to sail in. That’s mostly attributed to the climate, weather, and the many opportunities for fun activities around that time.

In the Caribbean region, for instance, summer is rated the best time to go sailing because the tropical temperatures are pleasant, the turquoise waters soothing, and the trades balmy.

High and low seasons vary based on location. But generally, if you’re sailing on a tight budget, visiting in the offseason or fringe season can be a great way to save more. This is because most charter companies have substantial discounts and incentives on offer during such months.

Bareboat Yacht Mandatory Costs

These compulsory or mandatory costs are to be paid by the charterer on arrival just before the beginning of the charter. The costs, as listed in the contract, include the following:

• End Cleaning (these are for cleaning the yacht after you’ve disembarked)
• Security Deposit or Security Deposit Insurance

The security deposit (payable by credit card) covers all damages regarding the yacht and/or its equipment. The amount does not include lost or stolen items like ropes, fenders, anchors, etc.

Further, there is no insurance cover provided for personal injury, damage to any property brought onboard by the charterer or any damage or loss that’s induced willfully or simply by gross negligence.

With some yacht charter companies, you’re free to choose between a Security Deposit and Security Deposit Insurance. The Security Deposit Insurance, in this case, is a non-refundable alternative to the Security Deposit but is considerably lesser.

Optional Costs

Some of the optional costs you might incur on your bareboat charter include the following:

• Bed linen per person
• Towels per person
• Outboard motor for a yacht or fuel for tender

Please take note these items may sometimes be included in the initial charter price. You should always check your contract.

Choosing Your Boat

Choosing a boat for a sailing vacation is something that’s mostly dependent on personal preference and the availability of the desired vessel on the dates you want to sail. From speedy cruisers to slower romantic sailboats through to yachts with heavier displacement, there’s a wide array of vessels to choose from.

If you’ve been yearning to sail on a catamaran, there are many designs and models you can choose from. And going the cat way has a set of its own benefits. Aside from having a shoal draft (which is perfect for shallow water cruising), it comes with an incredibly huge amount of deck space for relaxation and play.

To get more info about the amazing yacht options available for charter, you might need to study literature-brochures or articles on websites- about various charter companies’ fleets. Most of these resources detail everything, including photos and layout plans, so getting a clear picture of what best matches your holiday needs is easier.

One other important thing to consider when choosing a bareboat vessel is the list of equipment included onboard. A boat that comes with safety and electronic gear, entertainment system(s), galley equipment, dinghy, and linens is well in order.

If you’re planning to sail in tropical-reef areas, then a charter company that supplies its vessels with snorkeling gear and other water toys( even if at a small charge) for your amusement along the way can be a great choice to consider.

Once you’ve made up your mind to book a vessel, you’ll need to send a deposit to the charter company and proceed to sign a contract. The contract is basically meant to protect both you and the charter company plus prevent any misunderstandings or future disputes.

A typical charter contract covers such issues as insurance, liability, cancellation policy, and where (and when) you can and can’t sail. The contract also specifies the company’s policy regarding the delivery of the requested boat to you.

If, for unforeseen mechanical problems or other reasons, the boat you specified in your booking isn’t available, the company should be able to provide a comparable or better vessel than the one you had originally contracted.

As a charterer, it is critical that you read through the fine print to identify what is and isn’t included in the initial charter price. Some of the issues you might need to seek clarification on include whether:

• Dinghy and outboard charges are included in the contract policy
• There is a company support policy when a vessel breaks down or when you experience an emergency at sea
• The security deposit (paid alongside the initial deposit) is refunded immediately upon return of the vessel or will take a few business days
• There’s medical insurance available (for those whose medical insurance doesn’t cover them outside their country)
• There’s background info you need to know about the area you’re about to visit
• There are things you need to or not bring along

Arriving a Day Earlier

For added convenience in organizing yourself for the journey, you might need to arrive a day earlier. In this case, you may request to sleep aboard the designated yacht at a reduced rate. That way, you can unpack your suitcase just once, purchase all the required provisions and settle in quite seamlessly before setting off.

Get Familiar With Your Boat 

The handover process of a bareboat, which takes about an hour or so, is meant to help you and other members of your group get familiar with the vessel before setting out to the sea. As a minimum, you’ll be shown the following:

• Location and safe operation of the safety equipment onboard, including fire extinguishers, life jackets, first kids, and more
• Safe operation of cooking & heating systems plus refrigeration units
• Correct operation of the heads
• Location and use of yacht charts and pilot books
• Location and operation of reefing lines, winches, halyards, and other sail controls
• Use of VHF system, including mayday instructions
• Anchoring systems and how to anchor the boat
• Yacht engine operation and regular checks
• Any other systems unique to the chartered vessel

Don’t Have A Bareboat License?

In case you don’t have a bareboat license or a qualified and/or experienced skipper to accompany you on the charter, you have the option of booking both a vessel and a skipper. This is commonly referred to as skippered charter’. This option is a great option if you’re planning to go out sailing as a family together with children or would want to learn a thing or two about navigation.

What Crew Can I Hire On a Bareboat?

Aside from being a skipper, you’re free to hire a hostess or chef to help you with the cooking and the cleaning around. There are charter yachts that offer all these additional options. So making inquiries on their availability can make things more convenient for you even as you plan to set out into the sea.

Who Provides Food For The Crew?

If you have a skipper and/or hostess accompanying you on the journey, it is your responsibility to provide their food and drinks. So when shopping for groceries and other foodstuffs, you must take the crew’s food choice and cost into account.

Where Will The Crew Stay?

The skipper and the hostess, as part of the people accompanying you on the journey, will need a cabin for themselves. That means if you, for instance, are a group of 8 people, you’ll need to hire or charter a yacht with 5 cabins. The 8 of you will basically occupy 4 cabins while the skipper and hostess will take up the remaining cabin.

Provisioning Your Boat

In addition to the cost of boat hire , travel, and accommodations, you must also take care of the provisions. You can choose to either have the charter company provision for you (if they offer that service) or do the shopping yourself upon arrival.

If the provisions are to be supplied by the company, you’ll have to send them a complete list of the things you need ahead of time. They’ll then pick good quality items, all based on your preferences, and have the boat stocked just before you arrive. The cost reasonably hovers around $25 to $35 per person per day, depending on the area you’re planning to sail.

Most charter companies also offer partial provisioning , whose packages aim at providing enough supplies to last you for the first couple of days. You can add more provisions as you go along or get out of the water as soon as you run out of supplies.

Gas, Water, and Ice?

Although restocking water might not be necessary on a one-week charter, you might be forced to buy more ice after two to three days on your journey. Gas bottles could also be another possible extra. So, you need to check your contract to find out whether there are any extra charges for fuel and water or if the cost is included in the per-week rate.

What about the Diesel Fuel?

The cost of fuel in a bareboat charter is not usually included in the initial charter fee. However, it is a general requirement that the yacht is returned with a full tank. You can check the terms of the contract, which you’ll be given upon reservation.

Why Bareboat Charter?

Who’s The Bareboat Charter For?

A bareboat charter is for any free-spirited sailor who’s willing to take his/her dreams to faraway ports and get the better of the endless sea adventures. Whether you want to come with family and friends, sail to a single destination, or explore multiple islands, you’re free to decide. As long as you are a qualified skipper or have an experienced captain accompanying you, you should be good to go.

How to Book a Bareboat Charter?

Upon confirmation of availability, you can change the given OFFER into an OPTION in order for you to make a temporary reservation. There’s a defined time period (typically a few days) within which you need to confirm the booking, failure to which the option will be canceled. A booking, which is a fixed and binding reservation, is made as soon as the charter company receives and confirms your deposit.

What Is A Skippered Charter?

This is a form of charter where you, as a charterer, is provided with a professional skipper with full knowledge and experience of the local waters, bays, and marinas. This option can help you sail to the desired destination quite seamlessly without having to worry about the navigation and ship operation processes.

What Qualifications Do I Need?

With most charter companies, you require to have at least two crew members on board who are licensed or certified by reputable maritime authorities and whose documentation is accepted by the local coast guard. You can send your skipper and co-skipper licenses, certifications, and/or resumes to the charter company to confirm whether or not they are acceptable in the desired charter area.

Is It Possible to Do a One-Way Charter?

Yes, but you’ll be required to pay a delivery or re-delivery fee to your requested destination. The price, in this case, will be calculated based on distance and fuel consumption. You can inquire more about one-way charters from your charter company.

Do You Need Boat Insurance?

Most yachts are insured against Third Party Liability, the amount of which is equal to or greater than that which is made obligatory by local legislation. Yacht insurance is usually in excess of the security deposit that the client chooses to pay.

Having a Skippers’ Extended Liability Insurance (covering the liability of the crew and recovery of losses to the chartered vessel resulting from substantiated gross negligence) and a cover for consequential loss is highly recommended. Be sure to read through the conditions of insurance to find out what is covered and what’s not.

What Is a Security Deposit?

A security deposit is an amount payable to the base check-in, which is held against the boat’s insurance excess. The amount is refundable if there’s no damage to the boat or its equipment and/or any losses recorded. In the event there damage or loss is confirmed, an appropriate proportion of the security deposit will be returned ONLY after there has been a full assessment of the cost of damage or loss.

What is Included in the Bareboat Fee?

The base charter fee usually covers the cost of the yacht and berth in the base marina plus VAT.

What is Not Included in the Bareboat Fee?

The charter fee does not include marina fees (except for the base marina where the charterer embarks or disembarks), linen, towels, outboard motor, provisioning, skipper & Hostess, fuel, water, and refundable deposit. The yacht charter may require compulsory extras like gas, cleaning, etc. You should check your contract for clarification.

Cost to Hire a Skipper?

When booking a skippered yacht, it is important to remember that you’ll have to incur extra charges for the skipper on top of the normal charter fee. The cost, in this case, usually ranges between 150 -300€, and this varies largely depending on the boat type and size, distance as well as location.

What to Bring?

In order to make your bareboat sailing charter as convenient as possible, there are things you might need to carry alongside the normal provisioning. Some of these items include a 12-volt DC to 110/220-Volt AC inverter with USB outlets (for charging the phone, camera, etc.), European to American-style plug adapter, iPod and audio jack cable, as well as a tablet that’s loaded with Navionics chart.

Other things that might be necessary to carry are cruising and anchorage guides, local travel guide, hand towels, a book of notes, and deckhands. Also, be sure to carry a digital camera in order to document your adventures and create lasting memories.

Bareboat charter sounds like a very interesting adventure and I’ll love to experience such. It is sad though that if I don’t have sailing experience I’ll not be able to charter a bareboat. Don’t you think it would be better if you could be given one crew member to help aboard. Just my opinion

Wow.  I had no idea this was even possible. I have no experience sailing at all so this wouldn’t be for me.  I noticed there were some other ways to charter a boat and enjoy sailing.  Do you have more detailed reviews on the other options?  Which one do you recommend? Keep up the great work!

This looks nice when you want to go to sail, and you don’t have the funds to buy one yourselves. 

Now, for me this is both impossible, since I don’t have a sail certificate and neither have experience. 

But I have a friend who has it, but he doesn’t have the fund to buy a boat.

I have never been inside a big boat but I would that video walk through has really put things into perspective on how to go about when looking for a bareboat charter .to be flank so of this thing looks like that are not necessarily but the videos  tells orthers wise and  and they really have  done agreat work on that next time I am looking for bareboat charter I know what to look for.

The Caribbean is a big place, with more than 700 islands and roughly 44.5 million people spread across 33 political entities—13 sovereign states, 12 dependencies, one historical disputed territory, and seven other overseas territories. While travelers tend to lump the region into “the Caribbean,” there’s a rich tapestry of cultures, cuisines, experiences, and waters across the 1.06 million square miles of the Caribbean Sea.

We decided that, instead of divvying this list by island, we’d select different experiences, accessible only by boat. They range from exploring sunken shipwrecks to getting a taco on a floating restaurant in the middle of turquoise waters to diving stunning ecosystems, to enjoying some of the best sportfishing in the world.

The list isn’t exhaustive by any means, but it does show the range of possibilities in this beautiful, and often remote region, even after the spring-breakers have left and it moves into the much-less crowded summer season—which is often the best time to visit.

Here are 10 of our favorite island experiences.

Best Snorkeling, Barrier Reef in Turks & Caicos

The third-largest coral reef in the world, the Turks and Caicos’ Barrier Reef is home to over 60 coral species and over 250 fish species. Spanning 65 miles along the eastern edge of the islands, the reef is only accessible by boat. On a good day, you can see up to 100 feet below the surface (thanks to the extremely clear, blue waters), offering a chance for snorkelers to spot stingrays, reef sharks, vibrant reef fish, eagle rays, and dolphins. Local vessel Lady Grace is a full-service catamaran with a picnic lunch, a full open bar, and even a slide off the back that provides direct access to the reef.

Best Surf Spots, Costa Rica

Hidden along Costa Rica’s captivating coastlines are some of the country’s best-kept surfing secrets, like Punta Uva, an unspoiled stretch of coastline offering consistent waves and nearby rain forests. Inspired by the spirit of the legendary Ernest Hemingway, this beachfront gem offers a dining experience that becomes a Hemingwayesque journey into the heart and soul of Caribbean cuisine. Be sure to ask for the Old Man and the Sea special or choose an untitled fan favorite, like the curry lobster or grilled snapper. Best Offshore Taco Stand, Lime Out, St. Johns, USVI

Only reachable by boat, Lime Out Taco Bar—located just off St. John’s, USVI—fulfills any cravings for the munchies, even when you’re far out to sea. Distinguished by its “lily pads,” these green, circular floating tables offer the chance to sit, eat and drink in the warm Caribbean waters. Since these tables are first-come, first-serve, many people order fresh Mahi Mahi or local shrimp tacos ahead to enjoy from their charter boats. Local vessels include the Flying Frenchman, Axopar 37, or VanDutch 40 for getting you to the best sights around St. Johns, and then out to this popular watering hole.

Best Fishing, Guna Yala and Isla Bastimentos, Panama

Some of the best fishing in the world can be found in Panama’s San Blas Islands, off the north coast of the Isthmus of Panama. The remote archipelago of 300 islands boasts exceptional fishing opportunities in turquoise waters and near coral reefs, including fly-fishing for bonefish and permit. Another must-see is the Gamma, a 100-foot cargo ship that crashed during a storm in 1981. The wreck sits in only nine feet of water and is located at the southern end of Seven Mile Beach, letting snorkelers join scuba enthusiasts. There’s nothing quite like experiencing bioluminescent bays firsthand. These magical bays include Mosquito Bay in Vieques and Laguna Grande in Fajardo. They come alive after dark with the glow of microscopic organisms known as dinoflagellates. When these organisms are agitated, such as by movement in the water caused by passing boats, they emit a bright blue-green light, creating a surreal and magical glow in the water. APA stands for Advanced Provisioning Allowance. How exactly it works and why it exists may seem confusing. With this in mind, the 212 Yachts team thought it would be a good idea to break things down and start from the beginning, so here it goes!

What is APA for?

When chartering a yacht, the charter fee generally only covers the rental cost of the yacht , and any crew that come with it. So how do you pay for fuel or provisions for your trip? This is where APA comes in. It is an additional fee which will cover all these extras, such as food, drink, fuel, berthing costs, customs, communications… APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) is the standard system to pay your expenses on a luxury yacht charter . The APA essentially creates a bank account for the Captain (and chef) on the yacht to provision on your behalf.

How does APA work?

APA is generally calculated as a percentage of the charter fee, which you then pay in addition, before the charter commences. The broker or the captain will use this allowance to stock the boat, and fuel up. Any left over money will be returned to the client, at the end of the charter. Whilst on board, the captain will be in charge of the APA and has to keep any receipts necessary, as record for you, the client. He/she should also keep you updated as the charter progresses, of how much is being spent, and anything else you need to be aware of.

APA will apply, as standard on pretty much most professional yacht charters, and is close to obligatory for all luxury yacht charters.

There are a few sailing yachts and motor yachts, more commonly in regions such as South East Asia which offer all inclusive packages. The difference with a luxury yacht charter and an all inclusive trip, is that on a luxury yacht charter you personally choose, in advance, whatever you would like to have on the yacht. Therefore if you want the best Champagne and the rarest selection of cigars, wine and the finest of meats, caviar etc.. you must pay for it, from the APA. The broker and the yacht crew will happily source and select all provisions on your behalf, they need the funds in order to do so, hence the APA.

How much is APA?

The amount varies from yacht to yacht, but is generally between 30% and 40% of the yacht charter fee. For example, it will be higher if the yacht has a higher fuel consumption,  if you plan on doing lots of travelling, if you order the finest and most expensive brands of champagne, wines etc…

How do I pay the APA?

APA is payable in advance of your yacht charter, and normally at the same time as paying your initial charter fee. This is usually by bank transfer.

What happens if my APA does not cover the expenses on the yacht charter?

In the event that you ‘overspend’ your APA, you will need to pay up, before disembarking. You may be obliged to top up the APA during the yacht charter.

What if the APA yacht charter is more than I would like to spend?

If for example, you have budgeted €xxxxx to spend on expenses, but the APA is double that figure, you will still need to pay the APA in advance. However, you should communicate carefully your expenses budget with the broker and the Captain. If you put realistic constraints on the budget for food and drinks, then the Captain will do his/her best to stay within this budget. If the Captain and yacht broker know the figure you want to work with, then they will be able to assess how feasible it is in advance, and for example; adapt the planned itinerary to meet your budget, in terms of fuel spend. With clear communication, realistic budgets, and advanced provisioning, it may indeed (depending on your requests and the yacht) be possible to spend a lot less than the APA and have the difference  returned to you at the end of the yacht charter.

At nearly 125 feet, the Nautilus is a large option styled by Robert Delus. Built in 2008, it sleeps 10 guests in five cabins. At this size, you'll likely need a crew of six.

Whether you’re looking to escape the brisk winds of winter or the humid climates of summer, it is important to understand the charter seasons and how they may affect the planning of your private yacht charter. A charter season can refer to the weather pattern of a destination or the peak times when the demand for yacht charter is at its highest. Read on to find out more about the charter seasons and what they mean.

When referring to a charter season in terms of weather and climate, the seasons are broken into "summer" and "winter" whereas when speaking in terms of peak times, the seasons are "high" and "low" with high season being the busiest times and low referring to the slowest. It is important to understand that, although somewhat misleading, a charter “season” refers to periods of weeks as opposed to full seasons.

Ultimately, most charter yachts are built for warm climates and although some may be equipped with air conditioning, they are far less likely to have heat installed as when predominantly cruising in warm destinations such as the Caribbean or Mediterranean, there is simply no use for it. With this in mind it is important to understand that seasonal weather will affect the location of the majority of crewed yachts, which will move from one region to another, in line with the charter seasons. When choosing a charter destination ensure to establish the best cruising months as this will allow you to choose from a wider selection of yachts. For instance if you’re looking to charter in Alaska, be aware that come the winter season there will be very few marina’s open. If you have your heart set on a particular location, ensure to plan for the appropriate time of year.

The summer and winter seasons may overlap, particularly from year to the next and summer in one destination may be winter in another. When looking to charter in the summer, winter or all year round, here are some of the most popular destinations for yacht charter.

Typically, the summer season ranges from April/May to October. The most predominant locations to charter in the summer season include the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the America’s and the South Pacific.

Teenage boat captain begins charter boat business in Wakulla County; why she's on a mission to educate

It's a Wakulla County success story. I’m Kenzie Krueger in the St. Marks neighborhood. I just met a young entrepreneur who is working to share her love of the outdoors with her neighbors.

“I just know it so well It’s my favorite place to be.” For Ava Mercer, things like fishing and driving a boat come natural. “That’s why I wanted to keep doing it for work and everything else.”

Mercer is an 18-year-old captain who started her own charter boat business in Wakulla County. She's one of a few younger captains in the neighborhood, and she's on a mission.

“I would love to help anybody that wants to get started but definitely younger people, because so many older people kind of push them out of the way.”

Setting up the next generation for success. It's an idea that could help the environment here in the long run.

"It instills in our young people are use some responsibility." Albert Wynn is with Wakulla Environmental Institute. While Mercer works to train future boaters, Wynn works to remind everyone of, "having that mindset of knowing I’m out on the water everyday and I see the beauty and I understand what that means for my family and economically that’s important we need more of that for our youth.”

He says he hopes hopes more young people will take on missions like Mercer's.

“I’m glad you’re talking to young people about the importance of being out on the water and starting their own business that’s hugely important that’s what our youth need,” said Wynn.

“It’s getting bad like I can tell even in my life the amount of people that are going on the water and in the woods and everything like that it’s not making it any better,” added Mercer.

So now she's working to set an example. “I definitely want support more people going out by doing it in a good way not polluting and everything else that’s going on.”

Mercer is going to school for business. She has plans to grow what she's doing even more.

Six presumed dead after cargo ship crash levels Baltimore bridge

BALTIMORE — A major Baltimore bridge collapsed like a house of cards early Tuesday after it was struck by a container ship, sending six people to their deaths in the dark waters below, and closing one of the country’s busiest ports.

By nightfall, the desperate search for six people who were working on the bridge and vanished when it fell apart had become a grim search for bodies.

“We do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals still alive,” Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon N. Gilreath said.

Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, said earlier that one of his workers had survived. He did not release their names.

Up until then, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore had held out hope that the missing people might be found even as law enforcement warned that the frigid water and the fact that there had been no sign of them since 1:30 a.m. when the ship struck Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Moore expressed heartbreak after officials suspended the search for survivors.

"Our heart goes out to the families," he said. "I can’t imagine how painful today has been for these families, how painful these hours have been have been for these families."

It was a crushing blow to the loved ones of the missing men, who had waited for hours at a Royal Farms convenience store near the entrance of the bridge for word of their fate.

The tragic chain of events began early Tuesday when the cargo ship Dali notified authorities that it had lost power and issued a mayday moments before the 984-foot vessel slammed into a bridge support at a speed of 8 knots, which is about 9 mph.

Moore declared a state of emergency while rescue crews using sonar detected at least five vehicles in the frigid 50-foot-deep water: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle of some kind. Authorities do not believe anyone was inside the vehicles.

Investigators quickly concluded that it was an accident and not an act of terrorism.

Ship was involved in another collision

Earlier, two people were rescued from the water, Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said. One was in good condition and refused treatment, he said. The other was seriously injured and was being treated in a trauma center.

Moore said other drivers might have been in the water had it not been for those who, upon hearing the mayday, blocked off the bridge and kept other vehicles from crossing.

“These people are heroes,” Moore said. “They saved lives.”

Nearly eight years ago, the Dali was involved in an accident. In July 2016, it struck a quay at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium, damaging the quay.

The nautical commission investigated the accident, but the details of the inquiry were not immediately clear Tuesday.

The Dali is operated and managed by Synergy Group. In a statement, the company said that two port pilots were at the helm during Tuesday's crash and that all 22 crew members onboard were accounted for.

The Dali was chartered by the Danish shipping giant Maersk, which said it would have no choice but to send its ships to other nearby ports with the Port of Baltimore closed.

The bridge, which is about a mile and a half long and carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River southeast of Baltimore, was "fully up to code," Moore said.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said that her agency will lead the investigation and that a data recorder on the ship could provide more information.

"But right now we're focusing on the people, on the families," she said. "The rest can wait."

President Joe Biden vowed to rebuild the bridge and send federal funds.

"This is going to take some time," the president warned. "The people of Baltimore can count on us though to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

Speaking in Baltimore, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg echoed the president's promise.

"This is no ordinary bridge," he said. "This is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure."

But Buttigieg warned that replacing the bridge and reopening the port will take time and money and that it could affect supply chains.

The Port of Baltimore, the 11th largest in the U.S., is the busiest port for car imports and exports, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023 alone, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

Writer David Simon, a champion of Baltimore who set his TV crime drama "The Wire" on the streets of the city he once covered as a reporter, warned online that the people who will suffer the most are those whose livelihoods depend on the port.

"Thinking first of the people on the bridge," Simon posted on X . "But the mind wanders to a port city strangling. All the people who rely on ships in and out."

Timeline of crash

Dramatic video captured the moment at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday when the Dali struck a support and sent the bridge tumbling into the water. A livestream showed cars and trucks on the bridge just before the strike. The ship did not sink, and its lights remained on.

Investigators said in a timeline that the Dali's lights suddenly shut off four minutes earlier before they came back on and that then, at 1:25 a.m. dark black smoke began billowing from the ship's chimney.

A minute later, at 1:26 a.m., the ship appeared to turn. And in the minutes before it slammed into the support, the lights flickered again.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the workers on the bridge were repairing concrete ducts when the ship crashed into the structure.

At least seven workers were pouring concrete to fix potholes on the roadway on the bridge directly above where the ship hit, said James Krutzfeldt, a foreman.

Earlier, the Coast Guard said it had received a report that a “motor vessel made impact with the bridge” and confirmed it was the Dali, a containership sailing under a Singaporean flag that was heading for Sri Lanka.

Bobby Haines, who lives in Dundalk in Baltimore County, said he felt the impact of the bridge collapse from his house nearby.

"I woke up at 1:30 this morning and my house shook, and I was freaking out," he said. "I thought it was an earthquake, and to find out it was a bridge is really, really scary."

Families of bridge workers wait for updates

Earlier in the day, relatives of the construction crew waited for updates on their loved ones.

Marian Del Carmen Castellon told Telemundo her husband, Miguel Luna, 49, was working on the bridge.

“They only tell us that we have to wait and that they can’t give us information,” she said.

Castellon said she was "devastated, devastated because our heart is broken, because we don’t know how they have been rescued yet. We are just waiting for the news."

Luna's co-worker Jesús Campos said he felt crushed, too.

“It hurts my heart to see what is happening. We are human beings, and they are my folks,” he said.

Campos told The Baltimore Banner that the missing men are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

Active search and rescue ends

The Coast Guard said it was suspending the active search-and-rescue effort at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"Coast Guard’s not going away, none of our partners are going away, but we’re just going to transition into a different phase," Gilreath said at a news conference.

Maryland State Police Superintendent Roland L. Butler, Jr., said it was moving to a recovery operation. Changing conditions have made it dangerous for divers, he said. 

Butler pledged to "do our very best to recover those six missing people," but the conditions are difficult.

"If we look at how challenging it is at a simple motor vehicle crash to extract an individual, I'm sure we can all imagine how much harder it is to do it in inclement weather, when it's cold, under the water, with very limited to no visibility," he said.

"There's a tremendous amount of debris in the water," which can include sharp metal and other hazards, and that could take time, Butler said.

'A long road in front of us'

Built in 1977 and referred to locally as the Key Bridge, the structure was later named after the author of the American national anthem.

The bridge is more than 8,500 feet long, or 1.6 miles. Its main section spans 1,200 feet, and it was one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world upon its completion, according to the National Steel Bridge Alliance .

About 31,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, which equals 11.3 million vehicles per year, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The river and the Port of Baltimore are both key to the shipping industry on the East Coast, generating more than $3.3 billion a year and directly employing more than 15,000 people.

Asked what people in Baltimore can expect going forward, the state's transportation secretary said it is too early to tell.

"Obviously we reached out to a number of engineering companies, so obviously we have a long road in front of us," Wiedefeld said.
