AirYacht reveals radical 52m airship-yacht crossover concept

Flying yachts, once the stuff of our wildest, most outlandish dreams, are slowly inching closer to a reality. As the industry prepares for the 2022 Superyacht Design Festival , BOAT catches up with  Guillaume Hoddé, co-founder of AirYacht, and Franck Darnet, the yacht's designer, to learn more about an exciting concept that's set to take to the skies in 2026...

Swiss company AirYacht has unveiled a radical new concept that marries the flying power of an airship with the luxury amenities of a superyacht.

Capable of flying between 100 to 3,000 metres above the ground with an autonomous cruising time of around one week, the AirYacht's groundbreaking design is composed of two separate modules: a 200-metre helium-filled airship attached to an ultra-lightweight all-carbon 52-metre superyacht residence.

The three-storey residence can be landed in its entirety or it can deploy a 12-person elevator to allow guests to disembark for a quick stopover.

Each module has its own complement of crew - the airship will have a crew of three and the residence will have a crew of 12.

The AirYacht is the brainchild of Guillaume Hoddé and Matthieu Ozanne, who founded the company in 2017 and enlisted the design expertise of Franck Darnet , who most recently worked on the exteriors of 63.8 metre Atomic . Born in Nantes and immersed in the world of Vendée Globe racing boats, Darnet has a masterful knowledge of "weight performance" technology that makes him uniquely suited to the challenges of airborne yachts.

The residence will have the same layout as a superyacht, with three decks, 750 square metres of indoor space and amenities including a gym, sauna, swimming pool and touch and go helipad.

Accommodation is provided for between ten and 12 guests in a five or six-cabin layout. Terraces, which can be used while the AirYacht is both underway and stationary, flank the starboard and port sides and there is an additional 120 square metre terrace-style lounge on the aft.

Aerodynamic shape and low weight are crucial to the design of the AirYacht. In order to keep the vessel as lightweight as possible, the residence component won’t be fitted with engines.

This creates additional space and increased flexibility to tailor the interior layout, while also allowing the residence to be built at AirYachts’ own facility without the need for a shoreside shipyard. When the residence is detached and on water, it will be towed by its tenders.

The AirYacht aims to give passengers the freedom to roam anywhere in the world, from lakes and seas to deserts and mountains. “On a normal superyacht you have to stay at sea. You can’t cross a hill or a mountain,” said Franck Darnet. “Most of the beautiful things that you see on our planet - some of them are next to the shore [...] but a lot of them are inland.”

In order to conceptualise the residence, Darnet had to rethink various different aspects of design. To this end, the crew quarters are in the forward upper part of the residence - in the section that ‘plugs’ into the airship - in order to give the crew to access the airship module.

The AirYacht also features large sections of glazing in the hull that allows passengers to look down, “because the most spectacular things that exist when you are flying are on the floor,” said Darnet.

While the AirYacht will be able to fly at dizzying heights of around 3,000 metres, the vessel is designed to cruise at heights of between 100 and 200 metres to allow for crystal-clear views of the world unfolding below.

The AirYacht will require ‘early adopters’ for it to take off - both literally and figuratively. “This isn’t a new ship, or a new yacht or new plane. This is a completely new thing,” said Guillaume Hoddé, co-founder of AirYacht. ‘New concept, new design. It’s like a dream.”

Currently, the AirYacht is powered by hybrid technology. “In ten years, we hope to have a full hydrogen version,” added Hoddé.

The first AirYacht will be able to achieve top speeds of 50 knots and the first unit is due for completion in 2026.

Guillaume Hoddé will be attending the 2022 Superyacht Design Festival to shed more light on the AirYacht and discuss the future of flying-focused yacht designs. The event will be held in Milan from 22-24 June. Tickets are still available to purchase .

"Whether it’s wiring or plumbing, pipe fitting or painting, finishing or wiring, Feadship has the finest compilation of artists that I could find on my journey of discovery among the superyachts that exist today. It is all the small things that they do, the time they take to do what they do, and the extra effort that they take to make every corner, nook and cranny look great. - Review by the Owner who commissioned yacht ROCK.IT" (hull 687).

Made by KaiserWerft, loved by the World. A superyacht that merits a category of her own. It exceeds every expectation of luxury, design, engineering and craftmanship. KaiserWerft’s legendary 40 meter yacht Catwalk is nominated as Best Yacht of the World.

In January 2006, Kaiserwerft launched Catwalk, a very unique semi-displacement 40.5-meter yacht that extends to 42 meters by way of a swim platform and 8.1 m wide. The name Catwalk is based on its interior design concept, stucco walls and fabrics in harmony with Oak and African zebrawood, having both a polished and satin finish, grace the yacht. Catwalk has been built in-house to the high standards of quality and finish as expected from a German Shipyard. The yacht benefits from unusually high ceilings especially in the entrance lobby, which also incorporates a lounging area with 3-meter ceilings.

In continuity with previously built yachts, large windows in the Observation lounge compliment the Salon, a few steps away. Exclusive staircases to the lower deck for both the VIP and Guests are an unusual feature. The large Master suite on the main deck incorporates a Nautilus, an unusual and unique seat at 2 different levels in the bow area. A Penthouse in the Sky-lounge is equipped as a discotheque. Its floor has oak paneling certified to be over 150 years old and 3 glass-frames hold oak certified to be over 3,000 years old.

In contrast to most yachts, Catwalk has a full walk-around on the main-deck, which results in the walk-around being at a higher level. Access to the bow is via a set of srairs. Sun-space can be experienced on the bow area by way of a dining table which levels with the seating to become sun-pads. There is also a sunning area on the superstructure which incorporates a sunbrella and substantial seating, as well as an aft top-deck which incorporates a Jacuzzi and sun-beds.

A series of liberating spaces in the exterior maximise the use of Catwalk’s superstructure. The Bow has Alfresco dining. The electrically-operated table can also be used as a coffee table or lowered flush to the floor to become a sun-bathing area.

A large sun-pad with back-rests for several people is positioned above the Master’s suite and provides a beach-like environment, complete with a pull-up sunshade. The walkways are over-sized and the aft deck in the Penthouse has a jacuzzi, sun-pads and relax-chairs made of teak.

Catwalk by name and also by it’s interior design, a catwalk runs from the Aft Deck to the Observation Lounge in the fore part of the yacht. Stucco walls, african zebranowood and exclusive fabrics are in harmony with marble, glass and dark oak wood certified to be over 150 years old.

The Gallery is adjacent to the Owner’s breakfast area just outside the Master’s Suite and the landing of the VIP/Guests staircases. It is divided by a clear glass which when switched on, makes the glass opaque thus creating privacy in the breakfast area.

In the Pilothouse, excellent all-round visibility and state-of-the-art communications and navigation equipment make light work of controlling Catwalk. All of its furniture designed and built in-house.

Plentiful natural light illuminates the Master’s suite and offers commanding views. Lavish headroom makes space for raised Nautilus-shaped seating area in the bow. The suite has a large dressing-table, ample storage, an office area and a fully integrated Bang & Olufsen entertainment system all of which underlines a sense of comfort and space.

Two spacious VIP suites, situated amidship on the lower deck, are graced by opulent fabrics fittings and materials such as Venetian stucco walls. Bisazza mosaic tiling, beautiful oak, zebranowood joinery and the washbasins are from Keramag’s exclusive Joop! Collection.

KAOS Yacht – Extravagant $300M Superyacht

KAOS yacht (formerly JUBILEE and AL MENWAR) is an award-winning superyacht that was recently refitted with a completely redesigned interior.

At 110 metres (361ft) and 4,523 tons, she was the largest yacht ever built in the Netherlands at the time of her launch in 2017.

The vessel was recently spotted off the coast of southern Spain before dropping anchor in the beach town of Marbella.

Kaos yacht interior

The interior of the motor yacht was originally designed by Sam Sorgiovanni who is originally from Australia and aims to unite practicality with beauty through his unique designs.

The vessel was made completely wheelchair accessible including elevators and barrier-free access to all decks.

The process took a year and with the help of the British designer Reymond Langton, the interior was transformed.

KAOS has room for 31 guests in 16 cabins. This includes a lavish owner’s suite which consists of two separate bedrooms.

There are also four VIP suites and ten standard suites with ensuite bathrooms. All guest cabins are located on the upper deck.

45 staff distributed across 24 cabins find space on the lower levels of the vessel. Only the cabins for the captain and first officer are located on the bridge deck.

The KAOS yacht was designed with maximum comfort in mind. Her interior includes lavish facilities such as a spacious elevator, a steam room, a full gym, as well as an indoor beach club.

Originally she was constructed with Middle Eastern design in mind which includes features such as a large majelis, which is a dedicated seating and entertainment area meant for hosting guests.

The KAOS yacht also has a large cinema, a sauna, and full spa facilities. Below the deck, there is a separate crew gym and a small hospital in case of medical emergencies.

The interior design can be described as lavish and luxurious. White and blue carpeted floors with intricate designs compliment the exterior of the vessel and its signature aqua color.

Golden accents and cream upholstery go well with the wooden elements such as the teak flooring.

Opulent furnishing with many indirect lighting accents creates a feeling of coziness and luxury.

Specifications

At the time of her launch in 2017, the KAOS yacht was the largest yacht ever built by the custom yacht builder Oceano as well as the largest yacht built in the Netherlands.

At a length of 110 meters (361ft), a beam of 16.4 meters (53 ft), and a maximum draft of 4.4 meters (14.5 ft), she is currently ranked as the 39th largest motor yacht in the world, together with motor yachts ANNA, RADIANT and AL RAYA who measure the same length.

She displaces 4,523 tons and is known for her unusual design, which is very sleek and minimalist.

KAOS can reach speeds of up to 19 knots with an average speed of 15 knots which is not the fastest in her weight category but still impressive for her large size.

As expected from Oceano, she was constructed primarily from aluminum and steel and has a fuel capacity of 391,000 liters as well as a 230,000-litre freshwater tank. She is powered by impressive MTU engines fuelling two propellers.

The KAOS yacht can host 31 guests in 16 cabins as well as 45 crew in 24 cabins. Her maximum range is estimated to be somewhere around 5,000 nautical miles.

The KAOS yacht is an exceptionally beautiful yacht that was built prioritizing modern and minimalist design.

Lobanov Design is responsible for her eye-catching exterior, which focuses on futuristic elements combined with optical illusions.

Established in 2007, this design studio is known to be young, offering unique perspectives and modern approaches.

She was built with curved lines in mind incorporating elements of glass and metal in a nautical context.

Her all-around glass fronts create an optical illusion letting the yacht appear to have several more decks than she actually has.

The so-called trompe l’oeil effect lets KAOS appear sleek and elongated, setting her apart from traditional yacht design. Her designer Lobanov describes the modeling process for KAOS.

“The 3D modeling was quite a challenging task, which pleased my mathematical part of the brain. Each of the layers meets and splits under certain rules, which can be noticed from different angles.”

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 99681110-1024x683.jpg

Her exterior is white with light blue accents, which are contrasted by the many darkly tinted windows.

She has four decks, the largest of which is the aft which has a sizable swimming pool with a built-in aquarium and seating areas.

Several smaller decks are located on higher levels, although most of them are hidden in shaded areas.

Close to the top of the superstructure, a small jacuzzi is situated, allowing guests to enjoy incredible views while relaxing.

At the bow, a helipad is located, including refueling facilities for small to medium-sized helicopter aircraft. Below the helipad, the mooring deck is cleverly concealed for aesthetic purposes.

At the stern of the vessel, the KAOS yacht has an extendable swimming platform that can be closed completely when the yacht is underway.

This platform leads directly to a lounge area inside the yacht, complete with a state-of-the-art entertainment system, TV, and storage space.

On the starboard side of the aft, there is a separate platform for docking tenders and releasing water toys.

KAOS also possesses a modern underwater lighting system and state-of-the-art stabilizers for the comfort of guests when the vessel is underway or at anchor.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 95906127-1024x683.jpg

Toys and equipment

The KAOS yacht carries at least two tenders, one of which almost looks like a miniature version of the main vessel with the same blue and white design and tinted windows.

They were built by Pascoe International , a renowned company specializing in tenders for superyachts.

She carries a wide array of water toys, including several jet skis, water bobs, and paddleboards.

Previous names

Originally the KAOS yacht was built in the Netherlands by Oceano under the name SECRET III. Upon her launch, she was officially named JUBILEE and then renamed AL MENWAR by the royal family of Qatar, the House of Thani.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
