Custom Line 106' is one of the stars of the Custom Line planing range. A new horizon in yachting excellence, with clean, crisp lines and palatial spaces of essential sophistication, she offers unsurpassable comfort for her owner.

Fleet

Consummate elegance

In the Custom Line 106', a purity of line combines with a flowing succession of spaces in a continual, all-embracing synergy. Light takes centre stage, adding a dash of magic to spaces, vistas and stories to create a simply exhilarating masterpiece. 32.82 m overall length | 7.4 m maximum beam

A fluid harmony

Custom Line 106' is the epitome of pure Italian excellence. The succinct lines of the bottom and hull maintain the exemplary hydrodynamic performance of the latest models in the brand’s planing range. The minimalist design melds interior and exterior into a single elegant whole, as the surfaces dovetail in an architectural harmony that breaks down the boundaries between the spaces.

Fleet

A masterpiece of beauty and comfort

The surfaces are interconnected like a sculpture, crafting a fluid sequence of volumes running the length of the yacht. The stern vaunts a refined, clean-cut aesthetic, while the designers have dreamed up some larger, complementary spaces to relax and rest in further forward. The bow is linked to the flybridge, protected by two side windows and featuring a standard hard top with paired skylights – an exclusive area for admiring the wonders of the sea stretching out in all directions.

Fleet

Signature style

Uniqueness leaves an indelible impression, an unmistakable hallmark of exquisite style. The on-board décor is fully personalisable, with vivid colour contrasts and supreme harmony of form, as elegance finds expression in a select handful of distinctive, essential elements.

Resplendent in the light

Natural illumination adds an extra dimension to the space, magnifying the pleasure of cruising. The generous floor-to-ceiling windows on the main deck let the sun filter through so that you can revel in every ripple.

Resplendent in the light

Luminous beauty

The lower-deck layout of the Custom Line 106' features 2 VIP cabins and 2 twins, where light is king once again, courtesy of the ample built-in glazing. Every space is a work of art, a unique story of infinite nuance.

Natural technology

Advanced technology makes the cruising experience even more natural. The Dual Mode Transom (DMT) system is implemented with two hatches that cover the stairs when the vessel is under way, for complete aesthetic clarity; when moored or at anchor, they vanish into the middle of the door. The garage can accommodate a tender and three-seater jet ski. Electro-hydraulic stabilising fins with under-way and zero-speed modes, plus gyroscopic stabilisers on request, offer even greater comfort while at rest.

Lazzara 106

  • By Dudley Dawson
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

The contrast to his company car couldn’t be more stark. Jeff Gordon spends his working days in NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick’s DuPont Monte Carlo, a 200-mph racing machine wearing the number 24 and sporting so many colors that his racing team has been dubbed the Rainbow Warriors.

Gordon has won NASCAR’s premier title, the annual Winston Cup Series national championship, four times, the last in 2001. In so doing, he joined racing patriarch Richard Petty and the legendary Dale Earnhardt as the only men to have taken the crown more than three times. Interestingly, Gordon’s first Winston Cup race in 1992 was also Richard Petty’s last.

In his off time, and there’s precious little of it, Gordon understandably likes to get away from the track and the crowds. His avocation is cruising and diving, and his latest vehicle of choice for this activity is a new 106-foot trideck motoryacht. Designed and constructed by Lazzara Yachts of Tampa, Florida, 24 Karat is a showcase of flawless, sweeping curves and has lines even sleeker than those of Gordon’s Monte Carlo, but that and the name are where the similarity ends.

Although Gordon was not aboard, I visited the yacht in Ft. Lauderdale with Lazzara Yachts’ chief designer and president, Dick Lazzara. Lazzara had told me Gordon was referred to him by Roger Penske, a former motorsports driver of renown and now a team owner and yachtsman. Penske’s spectacular Feadship, Detroit Eagle (“Full Throttle, February 2002), is filled with action-packed racing art and colorful career memorabilia. Not so aboard Gordon’s 24 Karat .

Built to order with considerable input from Gordon, 24 Karat ‘s interior is surprisingly subdued. The English colonial décor is reminiscent of a fine gentleman’s retreat, quite appropriate, for that is exactly what it is. It is, in essence, Gordon’s escape capsule from the world of racing celebrity.

Interior designer Chris DeLashmutt, who works exclusively for Lazzara Yachts, used cherry veneers arrayed in starburst patterns and finished in a high gloss to set the stage for furnishings and accessories that make the yacht as warm and welcoming as a trusted old friend. Patterned carpets accented by marble borders delineate the saloon and dining areas on the main deck, and marble is also used for the sole of the lower guest foyer. Brocades and other pronounced weaves are employed for upholstered furnishings to offer a textured, light-hued contrast to the smooth cherry joinery.

Gordon’s yacht is hull number two in a series of semi-custom 106-footers built by Lazzara. Hull three has already been delivered, and all utilize the builder’s innovative multipart mold system for fiberglass hulls that, while all new with extra length and beam, are derived from Lazzara’s successful earlier models, including the current 94-footer. There is a choice of standard arrangement plans, but the first three boats each have a different layout customized to her owner’s specifications.

The first yacht of the series had four staterooms and a sitting room. Gordon often hosts special guests and opted to combine the port and starboard staterooms into a luxurious, full-beam VIP stateroom. A third sizable stateroom lies at the bow, and a fourth smaller cabin/sitting room is situated to starboard.

Gone is the fuel deep tank that separated guest accommodations from the engineroom on earlier Lazzara yachts. In its place is double-bottom tankage that leaves more length forward. To counter the potential for noise transfer from the main machinery and auxiliary equipment, the master stateroom on 24 Karat is buffered by a well-insulated bulkhead and a full-beam his-and-her head that includes a spacious shower and huge tub on centerline.

Gordon’s input on the design was not limited to the arrangement and décor. Without any background in yacht design, but with a fair degree of experience from previous boats and a keen sense of the importance of mechanical technology, Gordon reportedly immersed himself in learning all he could about the yacht as it came together. His years of discipline and working with a team approach to achieve his goals were apparent, as well. Dick Lazzara described Gordon as “one of the most enthusiastic owners we’ve ever had. An open thinker and innovator himself, Lazzara recounted what a pleasure it was to work with Gordon as the yacht came together, fielding questions and incorporating suggestions Gordon brought from a different but equally high-tech perspective.

Our sea trial off Ft. Lauderdale was in small swells, not the best for testing the limits of a boat’s performance, but I was pleased with 24 Karat ‘s response as I ran her through a range of speeds and maneuvers. Capt. Warwick Hallinon confirmed that she behaves equally well in heavier seas.

The yacht had little perceptible vibration, even at top speed, with no buzz at all on the afterdeck. I was particularly interested in this aspect, as 24 Karat is designed with moderate propeller tunnels to achieve her 5-foot, 6-inch draft. The tunnels, similar in shape to those used for water jet inlets, house Rolla custom machined, high-area five-blade propellers. These are running with reduced clearance between the blade tips and the hull, just 10 percent of the prop’s diameter compared with a normal clearance of 15 to 20 percent. To ensure the system would be optimized for performance and speed, Lazzara worked with Rolla in computer designing the tunnel shape and propeller specifications. Further, each shaft strut has a single foil-shaped leg to limit disturbance of the inflowing water as much as possible.

While there will be no 14-second refuelings aboard 24 Karat , the synergy between Lazzara’s yacht-building expertise and Gordon’s racing experience was readily apparent as I entered the yacht’s engineroom. It is, without a doubt, one of the best-arranged and most easily accessible spaces I have seen on a motoryacht of this size and power. Maintenance, both preventive and repairs, is facilitated by a pair of workbenches above the gensets aft and a small engineer’s station at the fuel manifold forward.

In addition, everything is labeled with lettering that leaves no doubt what any valve, switch or piece of equipment does. Helpful to crew in normal operations, such instructions become even more important in an emergency. At a glance, I could tell that the bilge manifold was lined up for draining the engineroom as soon as the pump was started. The carbon-dioxide fire system had clear actuation controls just outside the engineroom’s watertight door, and the door itself was fitted with a window so one could see what was happening in the machinery space without opening the door.

Lazzara Yachts, while always mindful of the welfare of its owners, has consistently improved the safety aspects of its yachts over the years. Gordon’s 24 Karat is one of the best yet. From small details such as the electrical interlock on the flying bridge grill cover, to larger ones like the float-free positioning of the liferaft canister, this yacht is beautiful proof that safety, comfort and aesthetics are not mutually exclusive aspirations. Form and function can indeed coexist, though Dick Lazzara laughingly protested that his Italian heritage of “beauty above all prevents him from acknowledging that possibility.

Crew of CEDAR ISLAND|Captain

Captain: Steve De Klerk

Captain - Steve De Klerk Steve was born in South Africa and fell in love with boating when he got involved in local sailboat regattas. He was fortunate to have met JJ Provoyuer, who had raced Single-handedly around the World in the then British Open Challenge (BOC) and through him was taught a lot and offered the opportunity to circumnavigate a 47' Sloop back in 1998. 5 young guys set sail from Cape Town on a voyage of a lifetime, participating in regattas like Antigua Race week, (he won his class) and Kenwood Cup in Hawaii. Exchange rate fluctuations changed the program's plan and Steve found himself in Newport, RI, where he immersed himself in the rich NE Sailing culture. He moved to Wrightsville Beach. NC. He tried settling down with a land-based career and gave it his best shot but after 9 years he wandered back to the ocean and made the transition to Motoryacht's and has never looked back. In a professional capacity, Steve has been Captaining a variety of vessels, both Motor and Sail Boats, charter and private in the 90 to 115-foot range all up and down the US East Coast from as far North as Northern Maine and south to the Keys. He has also spent lots of time in the Bahamas as well as the USV and BVI's not to mention a plethora of Caribbean islands he has visited too. Steve has always received excellent charter guest reviews and goes out of his way to ensure that his guests get the best experience possible that he tailors around their favorite activities. He does his best to say "Yes" to every guest request possible. With Steve's true love for the Northeast and the Bahamas, you can rest assured that a trip on this vessel will be one to be remembered.

NC. Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses

lazzara 106 yacht

ABOUT THE 106 Motor Yacht

The Lazzara 106 is a 106-foot luxury motoryacht with a skybridge that was produced by the iconic Florida-based yacht-building firm Lazzara Yachts between 2003 and 2005. Though the bow entry is ultra-fine there is barely a sharp edge to be found elsewhere across this impressively sized vessel. Soft curves and an aerodynamic superstructure are matched by tear-drop windows and rounded flares for a profile directly inspired by the dolphins that play in the waters off the Gulf Coast. Interiors, too, eschew hard angles for free-flowing and curvaceous living spaces with plenty of natural light, while powerful engines and a seaworthy hull make this is a natural-born performer on the high seas. Named as one of Robb Report’s ‘Best of the Best’ for 2003, this yacht remains an immensely sought-after vessel on the used market thanks to its deluxe finish, handsome styling and breathtaking dimensions.

The rear portion of this yacht’s skybridge remains open to the elements and can be used to store a jet-tender or to host an aft sunlounge. There is a circular jacuzzi spa-pool back here that can be covered with cushions and used as a daybed when not in use, while a pair of half-moon sofas paired with timber-topped breakfast tables trace the sides of the bridge. Moving forward you will find the front portion of the bridge covered by a wrap-around fiberglass hood with sculptural architectural supports, open side windows and angled windscreen glazing. In here there is a walk-in wet-bar with stools, a sink, chilled storage and an ice-chipper, while you will also discover a dining sofa with a table and a centrally located upper helm.

There is further sun-kissed outdoor space one level down, with a Portuguese bridge-style sofa out on the foredeck and twisting side-steps to stern leading to a beach club area with two transom garages capable of storing jet-skis either side of a full-beam, teak-lined hydraulic bathing platform. The aft-cockpit offers a more shaded and secluded retreat with a curving transom sofa, a dining table and an outdoor wet-bar station with a grill.

Rounded sliding glass doors lead guests into a palatial main-deck salon featuring makore or cherry interiors with marble borders, Onyx accents, brocaded upholstery, Fabrica carpeting, glass-framed cabinetry, beveled timber paneling, speckled granite counters and panoramic side glazing. There are a trio of plush sofas in here surrounding a glass-topped coffee table with four leather ottomans, while an art-deco inspired bar and a formal dining table for up to eight sit further forward. A mirrored bulkhead flanked by wooden pillars and a glass display cabinet separates the salon from a main-deck galley with country kitchen dimensions, granite work surfaces, a double-width Frigidaire fridge-freezer, a Kitchenaid five-zone hob, a Sharp microwave, an LG convection oven, a stainless steel sink, a Scotsman ice-maker, a wine-cooler, a Bosch dishwasher and a C-shaped dining booth.

For all-weather piloting head up to the enclosed pilothouse, where you will discover a map desk, a leather helm seat, Jastram hydraulic steering, TRAC bow thruster controls, Garmin electronics, ICOM VHF radio, Northstar GPS, Furuno radar, Simrad autopilot, a KVH compass, engine feedback monitors and ABT digital stabilizer controls.

This yacht’s mammoth dimensions become clear across a plush lower deck with stately surrounds in authentic wood, where up to eight overnight guests can enjoy en suite facilities, queen-sized beds, expansive hull-glazing and good head clearance. A trio of double cabins and a lower-deck living room occupy the front half of the hull, while a full-beam owner’s stateroom amidship impresses with a side-sofa, a work-desk, glossy timber cabinets, Shoji wall screens and a double bathroom with Silestone or pink granite counters and an enclosed wet-room.

A pair of MTU 16V 2000 diesel engines help this yacht to achieve top speeds of up to 27 knots, while at comfortable cruising speeds of 22 knots the Lazzara 106 enjoys a globe-trotting range of over 1,000 nautical miles.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

106 ft yacht

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

106 ft yacht

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

106 ft yacht

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

106 ft yacht

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

106 ft yacht

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

106 ft yacht

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

106 ft yacht

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

106 ft yacht

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

106 ft yacht

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

106 ft yacht

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

WEATHER ALERT

Fort lauderdale police officer wounded in shooting at hotel; suspect dead, officer was released from the hospital thursday evening after sustaining non-life threatening injuries.

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – There was a massive police presence in Fort Lauderdale’s Harbordale area Thursday morning after a city police officer was shot.

It happened in a hotel room at the Holiday Inn Express at 1500 SE 17th St., according to police.

Police Chief Bill Schultz said just after 7:30 a.m., a caller reported that he had killed someone inside of a hotel room.

Officers entered the room and exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who barricaded himself in the room, Schultz said. He said one officer was struck by gunfire.

The suspect, who police identified as Karl Chludinsky, 46, of Margate, was found dead inside of the room by SWAT officers, according to Fort Lauderdale police spokesperson Casey Liening.

Liening also confirmed that the wounded officer was released from Broward Health Medical Center on Thursday and is expected to make a full recovery.

A second officer was injured and treated at the scene but was not shot, Schultz said.

Watch the police news conference:

Sue Riggs, who was visiting Fort Lauderdale for the first time, told Local 10 News that she immediately went into hiding after hearing the gunshots nearby.

“I jumped up and went into a men’s room right there and it is all concrete and steel,” she said. “We couldn’t figure out why they knew he was there in that room. That makes sense.”

Hotel guest Luis Castaneda said he and a group of bystanders were directed by a police officer to a nearby conference room for safety.

“She was like, ‘Everybody, get into this conference room!’ They put us in there, they locked it and turned the lights off.”' she said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the police shooting. The three officers who opened fire are on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Schultz said.

Local 10 News went to Chludinsky’s home to speak with family members about the incident but no one answered.

Neighbors say he was going through a bit of depression following a recent divorce but are still shocked this happened.

“I would’ve never expected anything like this. He was always a sweet man toward us,” a woman said. “Even though he was going through some hard times, you could tell he was trying to push through.”

A Broward County arrest photo from 2019 shows Chludinsky after he was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and drug possession.

Police said a motive for the shooting remains unclear at this time and stressed that there is no threat to the community.

Breaking News

Florida news | rep. carolina amesty notarized document that teacher says he never signed | special report, florida news, florida news | go inside research boat that studies florida’s overheated corals.

The Coral Reef II is docked in Miami on March 13, 2024. The research team left that morning for Key Largo.(Tampa Bay Times)

While you might first notice the glossy super yachts or a fishing trawler on the Miami River, there’s also an 80-foot vessel packed not with partiers, but scientists, trying to protect the coral offshore.

Bridget Coughlin, the CEO of the Chicago-based Shedd Aquarium, said their research vessel named the Coral Reef II is docked in Miami because of the diversity of marine life in the area.

“We teach climate change through empathy with animals,” said Coughlin. “If you talk about how otters are starving, that empathy for that otter is going to catalyze you to act.”

The vessel can go out to sea for three weeks at a time and can travel as far south as the Dominican Republic. The researchers study a plethora of animals including queen conch, endangered rock iguanas, sharks and climate change’s impact on the coral reef. From March through October, the crew often works days that stretch from 7 a.m. to midnight.

How to come aboard the research vessel

The Coral Reef II also acts as a live-in laboratory for aspiring marine biologists. High school and college students can go on a weeks-long journey that includes snorkeling in crystal-clear water with Caribbean reef sharks and working side-by-side with scientists. Chuck Knapp, a 30-year employee of Shedd and the head of conservation on the vessel, said he got his start that way.

Rep. Carolina Amesty notarized document that teacher says he never signed

“I was originally a high school marine biology student back on the boat as a 17-year-old in the late ‘80s so it’s been a thrill of a lifetime to come back,” Knapp, who gave a tour of the vessel in the video said.

This summer, high schoolers will be taking a trip to the Bahamas to learn about how to protect dolphins, snorkel shipwrecks and observe firsthand from Shedd’s shark research biologist.

Conducting research on coral reefs bleaching

One of the most unique parts of the vessel is its live well system, which consists of large built-in tanks at the front of the boat filled with seawater.

These mini aquariums are a safe harbor for wildlife that scientists are trying to study or move. The live well system makes it easy to scoop marine life like coral up, perform heat stress tests and return them back to sea in hours.

Ross Cunning, a coral biologist with Shedd, said researchers can use technology onboard to test how well the coral absorbs sunlight and observe what temperature and speed cause corals to bleach.

Mark Schick, the senior director of animal operations on the Coral Reef II research vessel owned by Shedd aquarium, dumps water overboard. (Tampa Bay Times)

Even two corals of the same species might bleach at different speeds, and they’re looking for the most heat tolerant coral, Cunning said.

Last summer he worked alongside South Florida research groups, like the University of Miami, the Coral Restoration Foundation, and Reef Renewal to test snippets of these baby corals in nurseries that have been growing in higher water temperatures.

“Finding interventions to boost the heat tolerance in coral reefs is more important than ever,” Cunning said. “But the most critical thing we need to do is stop climate change.

“All the research in the world will not boost coral heat tolerance enough to cope with oceans that continue warming. We must stop the root of the problem and stop greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible.”
