6 lessons learned from the Northern Marine 85 launch capsize

Yacht launches can go wrong.

Yacht launches are usually a cause for celebration, but last year one went horribly wrong when a Northern Marine 85 superyacht capsized during her launch in Ancortes, Washington. Now a recently released official Marine Accident Brief from the National Transportation Safety Board details exactly what went wrong.

On May 18, 2014, Northern Marine 85 yacht Baaden , known as project Blood Baron during build, was launched stern-first down a boat ramp at the Fidalgo Marina when it capsized, as seen in the video below. From transcription errors and instability to unorganised project management, there seem to have been multiple problems that led to the capsize of Baaden , all of which offer important lessons on how similar accidents can be avoided in the future.

The first lesson to be learned is simple: understand that accidents can happen and launches can go wrong, and plan ahead accordingly.

Transcription errors can be fatal to a superyacht launch

The National Transportation Safety Board determined the probable cause of the capsizing of Baaden during its launch to be the "vessels low margin of stability due to the combined effects of a recording error during the final vessel weigh, which resulted in an incorrect assessment of the vessel’s centre of gravity, and an overestimation of the weight of installed ballast."

In other words, there were ballast and stability issues, caused in large part by a transcription error from the builder New World, which had acquired Northern Marine's assets and was operating under its name.

New World had supplied the stability naval architect with an aft starboard load value of 68,500 – a typo as it was really 60,550. But the naval architect used the incorrect measurement to calculate the vessels total weight, and the aft port load had 68,700 – an 8,000 pound difference caused by a typo that proved fatal for this yacht's launch. On top of this, New World also overstated the ballast weight as 23 LT when it was really 16.61, causing the architect to overestimate the yacht's stability.

Don't assume anything when launching a yacht

As the Marine Accident Brief reports, all was going as planned until 40 seconds after the front dolly transporting Baaden submerged and the team said there was a "sudden loud clank and crunching sound from the stern".

The team paused the launch to find the cause of the problem, but there were no leaks and all launch mechanisms appeared to be behaving normally, so they decided to proceed with the launch 12 minutes later. The team had no way of knowing that there were serious ballast and stability issues going on with the yacht.

Hindsight is 20/20, but this excerpt from the report is telling, "the launch team believed the boat would right itself from the port list once it floated free from its cradles."

But as the yacht moved into the water, it was apparent the port stabiliser fin was dragging on the ramp. The vessel listed further to port, slipped off the front of its cradle, and as the captain accelerated to help the yacht into the water more quickly, her roll rate to port only quickened. The boat "quickly capsized" and began to take on water through its engine air intakes.

Consistent project management is a necessity

Before the fateful day of the launch that went wrong, Baaden had a tumultuous beginning. Her initial builder, Northern Marine went bankrupt in 2012, and New World Yacht Builders acquired its assets, construction techniques and retained the company’s name. Baaden began as an 80-foot hull mould and was expanded to 25.9 metres in her midsection and stern while the bow was given more flair.

Project management of the build seems to have been chaotic with the engineer departing early in the project and the yacht owner's onsite build captain being let go and replaced with a less hands-on management group. While the general manager who had previously served with Northern Marine was on the New World team, he was not specifically involved with Baaden . All of this combined could have led to a less than functional build with errors, such as ballast issues, easily slipping through the cracks.

According to the accident brief, "The company's acting general manager stated that the Baaden project had more discontinuity in technical personnel and a greater amount of subcontracted work compared to past builds."

Stern-first launches are tricky for yachts of any size

While it might be tempting to think this launch capsize was a one-off incident, it's important to note that large yachts will always be vulnerable during stern-first launching. As the report states, "Stern-first launching on an angled ramp or incline presents a stability issue that large vessels face only when first entering the water. The large trim angle causes the vessel’s stern to become buoyant while the bow is supported on a cradle. This can cause a momentary negative righting arm and, without additional supports at the bow constraining the vessel from rolling, necessitates getting the hull into the water quickly to obtain full stability."

There were no bow constraints in use on the Baaden launch, nor any launching calculations performed to evaluate stability at various trims and positions when entering the water when the yacht would be at its most vulnerable position.

Plan for worst case scenarios

The launch capsize of Northern Marine 85 superyacht Baaden reminds us to always have a backup plan for worst case scenarios.

The report states that launch crew trapped in the engine room saw water leaking in through the lazarette and determined that the area was likely flooded and they wouldn’t be able to escape this way. Recalling a watertight window in the starboard-side head forward of the engine room, they made their way there and a shoreside team was able to use a rock to break this window and let out four of the five crew members. Fortunately, there were only three minor injuries. An important lesson here is for crews and owners alike to have a plan in place with escape routes and emergency procedures when everything goes wrong – even during launch – but hope they never will need to be used.

Despite being salvaged, due to damage to the interior woodwork, machinery and electrical systems, the capsized superyacht Baaden was declared a total loss worth an estimated $10 million.

$10 Million Yacht Sinks During Launch in Washington State

A yacht sits on its side on May 19 near Anacortes, Wash.

A $10 million, 90-foot yacht was being launched in Washington state when it suddenly capsized.

The yacht, named Baden, had already been lowered into the water in Anacortes, about 80 miles north of Seattle, when it slowly tilted and then sank, according to media reports .

The cause of last month's accident is under investigation, but New World Yacht Builders, which built the yacht under the Northern Marine brand, said the problem appeared to be in the launch apparatus, not with the boat.

"The physical evidence on, and adjacent to, the launch ramp suggests that the dolly carrying the weight of the port stern of the yacht may have suddenly dropped off the edge of the boat ramp during the launch, causing the vessel to experience a sudden list to port, from which it could not recover in its light condition for launch," Northern Marine said in a press release .

A YouTube video from YachtVid shows someone at the launch ceremony breaking the ritual champagne bottle on the hull before the boat slid into the water.

As it entered the water, the vessel started to lean to the port side, and then quickly capsized. Six people were on board and all escaped serious injury, according to reports.

Northern Marine said it has launched more than 35 vessels at the same ramp with no previous problems. Baden is a so-called "explorer yacht," designed more for remote expeditions than leisure.

The company added that it has "complete confidence" in its designs. According to a local media report , New World Yacht has since laid off its staff of 52 and production has been suspended.

Investigation Shifts in Capsizing

  • By Yachting Staff

Northern Marine launch capsizing

The National Transportation Safety Board has taken over the investigation of a capsizing that occurred May 18 in Anacortes, Washington, during the launch of a brand-new, 90-foot motoryacht.

“We’re investigating it because it’s a major marine casualty,” which means estimated damage over $500,000, said NTSB spokesman Eric Weiss. At the time of the failed launch, the yacht was listed for sale on the brokerage market at $9.2 million .

The U.S. Coast Guard completed an initial investigation before handing the matter over to the NTSB, according to both agencies. The NTSB investigation is expected to take several months.

The capsized motoryacht was constructed by New World Yacht Builders doing business as Northern Marine. Northern Marine was founded in 1995 by Richard “Bud” LeMieux, who sold his controlling interest in 2006, according to multiple sources. In 2009, former Northern Marine employee Andy McDonald founded New World Yacht Builders, which leased the Northern Marine name along with equipment and other assets and has been doing business as Northern Marine.

Northern Marine Is Back

Northern Marine Yachts Is Back

If you want an Expedition Trawler, you need to take a look!

I was particularly excited to learn that Northern Marine , known for its superb long-range expedition yachts, is back in operation. The yacht builder, based in Anacortes , Washington, has had its ups and downs in recent years, the most recent the untimely death of its owner. This is a shame, as Northern Marine is, in my experienced opinion, somewhat of the gold standard for expedition yachts operated without professional crew. Sure, there are other yards out there building long-range passagemakers to high standards, but the yachts from Northern Marine have a different heritage from most pleasure boats, and the difference is striking.

I first got to know the trawlers of Northern Marine in 1998 when I did a boat tour of Spirit of Zopilote, a new 62-foot expedition yacht built for Bruce and Joan Kessler. The 66-ton trawler was the first yacht from the new company. The production manager brought over two decades of experience at Delta Marine and was well versed in commercial boat building. Both co-founder Cliff Rome and Bruce Kessler had once owned Delta 70-foot trawlers and agreed these yachts were just too big. Something along the lines of 58 feet or so made more sense. This collaboration was the genesis of the new company.

My boat tour was so filled with interesting and unique information that my article was over 20 pages long, which is unheard of in magazine publishing. But everyone loved the depth of detail.

In the decades since, the company has continued evolving the long-range expedition yacht concept, gaining ever-increasing experience building 41 world-class yachts, each better than the last. New building techniques and technology allow the craftsmen to strengthen and reinforce fiberglass hulls, improve all systems with new levels of integration, and provide owners with the highest standards of finish and luxury appointments, essentially megayacht quality in a boat operated by a couple. Yet throughout this time, the company continues to pursue the basic premise of the ideal trawler-style yacht: seaworthy, quiet, comfortable, with plenty of room for fuel and stores.

So, the recent acquisition by Seattle Yachts is both welcomed and well timed. The work force can continue their mission. I have always been impressed by what boat builders, with experience building seagoing commercial fishing boats, bring to the table. Boats considered industrial strength, designed and engineered without compromise to keep the crew safe and protected in any kind of weather. Time is money, and there is no money to be made with breakdowns or equipment failures. Every component of every system must be carefully selected as the best solution for the job.

I spoke with Peter Whiting , partner of Seattle Yachts, about the recent acquisition. Peter is aware of the history and players of Northern Marine and is confident that the builder can now get back on track as the premier American yacht builder of long-range expedition yachts in this size range. Northern Marine is now the only yard in America to do so, a distinction that anyone looking to own one should carefully consider.

(Seen below: The new Northern Marine 57 has begun production at the Anacortes-based shipyard.)

Northern Marine 57

What makes these boats different from the pleasure boat trawlers developed since the late 1990s? In part, it comes from the commercial heritage. In typical pleasure boat construction, a boat is drawn by a designer, and then the builder figures out where to put all the equipment. If you have ever gone aboard some of these production trawlers at a boat show, this explains why one may find an oddly-placed, skinny access door into the engine room from the master stateroom or through the shower, or stabilizer actuators located inside furniture in a stateroom or other living space. Or an exhaust system that one must climb over to reach the fuel filters on the far side of the engine. And the pleasure boat practice that was popular years ago, of hiding all wiring and hoses and pumps out of sight, was to appeal to potential buyers used to a Mercedes or Lexus (when nothing under the hood is accessible). I recall many heated discussions with representatives from those companies, as I argued that was just plain wrong.

(Seen below: The engine room inside a Northern Marine 57.)

engine room in a northern marine 57

Spend time at the International Workboat Show in New Orleans, and you may get a glimpse of what I am talking about. Tugs , vessel supply boats, and offshore fishing boats are built with serious components that one won’t find at your local West Marine. Massive hydraulic windlasses, commercial fuel filling capability, pressurized engine rooms, paddle-wheel sight flow indicators on all hoses for easy visual inspection, sea chests to minimize through hulls, 360-degree engine access, articulated rudders, redundant autopilot systems, workbenches in stand up engine rooms, lube oil tanks, pre-lubing system to circulate oil before and after an engine runs, mechanical Murphy gauges on main engines to monitor oil and cooling water levels under way...the list goes on.

Need an analogy here? If Kenworth Trucks decided to create an expedition RV, I guarantee the vehicle would be vastly different from what Winnebago might come up with. Both are well-respected American brands, but the design spiral used by each is decidedly different, with different priorities. And it shows in these boats, especially when looking beyond the gorgeous, luxury interiors.

Experienced builder and designer Stuart Archer manages the Northern Marine operation today, and he views their big boat, commercial heritage as polar opposite from the pleasure boat industry. “Given where we came from, with a big boat mentality on all systems and equipment,” he told me, “we now must find ways to fit big boat components into the size of the trawlers we now build.”

Northern Marine is always looking for new ways to build a better, stronger, safer boat. The company pioneered a keel cooled, wet exhaust hybrid system that is the best of both dry and wet exhaust systems. The company is also known for its resin-infused fiberglass construction and reinforced hulls and bulbous bows.

Integrate the above focus with teams of highly skilled and experienced craftsmen capable of creating the most luxurious interiors and accommodations using the finest materials and finishes, hardwoods, granite, tile, appliances, and comfort systems. This is Northern Marine today, some 25 years later.

(Seen below: The interior of a Northern Marine 64.)

interior of a northern marine yacht

I have many fond memories of being aboard Northern Marine yachts. One that captures the essence of the expedition trawler lifestyle was when we anchored just off the beach in Thorne Arm, Misty Fjords National Monument. Not a soul in sight, no contrails in the sky. The four of us enjoyed a wonderful gourmet dinner seated at the dedicated dining table and armchairs, classic music playing quietly in the background. We watched a bear stroll along the beach, and as Joan turned off the music, an eagle landed on a tree branch not 50 yards from us. It was a magical moment, not a sound in the world save the faint hum of one of the boat’s 15kW generators.

On the same trip, and to emphasize the big ship capability of this Northern Marine yacht, when we approached a municipal marina in Ketchikan, Alaska, we encountered a strong wind blowing us off the dock. Bruce Kessler had my diminutive wife up on the flybridge, pushing both stern and bow thrusters’ joysticks in order to hold us next to the dock against the howling wind, while Bruce and I took our time to safely get our dock lines around massive bollards. Having two 30-horsepower, continuous-duty hydraulic thrusters made all the difference, eliminating the stress of what could have been a difficult situation. No electric thruster would have made the grade.

Months later, I enjoyed when the 64-foot Zeehaen arrived in Annapolis on its way up the coast. People on the East Coast were not familiar with this style of trawler yacht and at one point, the owner hosted a reception for a group of his new friends. Everyone’s eyes were wide open that evening, taking in the beauty of this comfortable yet elegantly sophisticated interior in a boat that looked utterly bulletproof, the very definition of rugged adventure. A very young James Knight (of Yacht Tech fame today) was on a nearby Nordhavn 46, and I remember his steady stare at the towering presence of this Northern Marine 64 .

Stuart told me he is successfully getting his team back together, lead carpenters, mechanical techs, electricians, painters, and fiberglass crew and they are ready to move forward. He said their market niche has always been between 55 and 90 feet, as most couples feel that is as large as one couple can handle without crew.

Peter Whiting said they’ve started a 57-footer, and it is not too far along, so buyers could still have his and her tastes and preferences incorporated into the new boat.

I wish the Northern Marine team great success after the last few years of various difficulties. Now with the solid support and resources of the Seattle Yachts organization, the team can concentrate on what they do best: building world-class long-range expedition trawlers right here in Anacortes, Washington, fulfilling one dream at a time. As if to underscore the dream factor, Stuart added that he’s seen it over and over.

“The build process is every bit as exciting as using their new boat.”

I will follow the construction of this new Northern Marine 57, reporting on the progress, so stay tuned. Perhaps we can share in some of the excitement of the build process together. And if you happen to be the lucky couple who step up and make this raised pilothouse trawler your own, congratulations. You will own one of the finest expedition yachts in the world.

I agree...I can't even fathom how any work will ever be done until all of the legal issues surrounding this, as well as financial issues, are put to bed. I am curious as to why they moved the boat....will update when I get a report back.

Insurance Just for information, while I haven't seen a contract on the 90' build, I have seen one on another of their recent builds and here is a summary of the insurance clause from that. The responsibility for insurance is with the builder who must insure for "full replacement failure to the date of any loss or damage" with an insurer acceptable to the owner (buyer) and showing them also as a co insured. In the event of repairable damage all proceeds are applied to making those repairs. In the event of a "constructive total loss", the boat shall not be repaired. Also another point is that this was not the only boat sold at what would appear to be an absurdly low price. I don't see how they could possibly afford to build a fully equipped 78' for $1.9 million and still make a profit on it. Now that becomes relevant to this boat, one for wonder of why a buyer wouldn't have hesitancy, but also because determinating full replacement failure could be very difficult.

"Why move it? Perhaps because the owners of the property didn't want it left there ( You want a large hazard waste pile abandoned on your property? ,rc ). Perhaps because they didn't want to incur additional costs and perhaps the insurer wanted it moved. Also could have been lawyer advised." Perhaps it belongs to New World/Northern. Where else would you put your only asset, to be divided up by the courts later.

I posted photos of the move here: Trawler Forum - View Single Post - Northern Marine Incident Incidentally, Naval Architect Tad Roberts had a review of the Roddan engineering report and makes some interesting discoveries about he sees as a few glaring errors. If it was loose blocks, unsecured (knowing more would be added) then quickly shifted to port by a bad ramp launch, then a real bad roll to port; cause this event?

Opcn said: ↑ Maybe they had it on a rolling dolly in the full beam master suite. Even unsecured you'd expect it to be low enough that its movement would be hindered by longitudinal stiffeners, bulkheads, tank walls, anything really. I had the same thought when I first saw it going over, but if it were easily shifted/unsecured ballast you would think that the CG would let them shift it back while it was in the straps before running their stability test. That isn't what I would chose in a boat, but it's not completely unreasonable either. Honestly how often do you get a 65 degree heel? It's not like they will be going out into the bering sea in december or rounding the cape of good hope in it. If you pay attention to the weather and stick to common yachting grounds it's not going to be a likely occurrence, and there are a ton of motor boats out there that wouldn't be able to handle that kind of heel. As I understand it the deck house is rarely considered as anything but dead weight in the stability calculations, which are done just on the hull. If the windows don't bust out when you go over that's a lot of reserve buoyancy to help set her upright again. At that point it becomes a matter of securing all the loose material in the interior. When you are out in foul conditions getting banged up inside of the boat is a serious concern regardless of ultimate stability. Given her limitations I wouldn't call her the ultimate go anywhere boat, but it's not like she would be markedly unsafe in heavy conditions compared to a production sport boat in her size range. This is of course all based on her hypothetical characteristics, rather than her actual characteristics. Her actual point of vanishing stability seems to be somewhere less than 30 degrees of heel. If a production sport yacht turned turtle on launch that would be a real shock.

Has anyone been back to the ramp to mark the "hole" I think that would be a nice gesture to help prevent another $ 1.9 million catastrophe.

Capt J is referring to Opcn's comment, "It's not like they will be going out into the bering sea in december or rounding the cape of good hope in it." The issue being that the builder did promote this model as an expedition capable ocean cruiser.

1.9 Million?? olderboater said: ↑ Just for information, while I haven't seen a contract on the 90' build, I have seen one on another of their recent builds and here is a summary of the insurance clause from that. Click to expand...
rmjranch said: ↑ Where did you find a 78' Northern Marine/New World for $1.9 Million? I spoke with them last year, about a new boat, and the price was way higher!!!! Was yours a typo? I also looked to buy Blood Baron. Price was too high so LUCKILY I passed. Click to expand...

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

northern marine yacht capsizes

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.
