Police said it may have been a murder-suicide, and there are "some indications this was a domestic related incident."
"My understanding is that the Homeowners' Association maintains the front yard, at least at this home where these individuals lived," Lt. Bill Bingham said. "So at first glance, from outside, it's not immediately apparent that nobody's been caring for the place for up to a year."
Police also said a handgun was found inside the home.

3 'severely decomposed' bodies found in Irvine home; police investigating possible murder-suicide
IRVINE, Calif. (KABC) -- The bodies of three apparent adults were found Wednesday inside an Irvine home, prompting authorities to launch an investigation of a possible murder-suicide, police said.
Officers went to a home inside a gated community located in the 50 block of Riverboat at about 10:30 a.m., intending to conduct a welfare check, according to the Irvine Police Department.
"Extended family members of the residents of the home reported to Canadian authorities they had been unable to reach the residents for over one year and were concerned," after which the Canadian officials contacted Irvine police, the department said in news release.
A father, mother and adult son reportedly lived at the residence, according to the statement. When the officers entered the home, they discovered three "severely decomposed" bodies that appeared to be adults.
According to investigators, there were no signs of forced entry into the home and no suspects are being sought in the case. A gun was recovered inside the home.
"There are some indications this was a domestic related incident that resulted in a murder-suicide," the police statement said, without providing additional details.
Police say they believe the three bodies may have been there for up to 18 months and are investigating how the case went unreported for that long.
"As I understand it, there's a homeowners' association that's responsible for at least some of the lawn care and maintenance for the front of the homes," Irvine police Lt. Bill Bingham said. "Looking at the home at a glance it's not immediately apparent that somebody hasn't been in and out of the home for maybe up to a year."

Police Find 3 'Severely Decomposing Bodies' in California Home During Welfare Check
Officials believe the three bodies had been inside the Irvine home for 12 to 16 months, according to The Orange County Register

Police have discovered "three severely decomposing bodies" inside a California home, leading to questions of a possible murder-suicide.
The Irvine Police Department came upon the bodies inside a home at 58 Riverboat in Irvine at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday while conducting a welfare check at the residence, according to a news release obtained by NBC Los Angeles and KTLA .
Canadian authorities contacted the IPD to conduct the welfare check after relatives of the home's residents — a father, mother and adult son — had not heard from the trio in over a year, FOX 11 Los Angeles reported .
Officials believe the three bodies had been there for 12 to 16 months, according to The Orange County Register .
The Irvine Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
Authorities said in Wednesday's release that there were "some indications this was a domestic-related incident" and are looking into the matter as a possible murder-suicide, per reports.
Lt. Bill Bingham told ABC7 that the bodies are so decomposed that identification is proving difficult
Officers located a gun inside the residence, according to the Register and NBC Los Angeles.
Police said the father of the family living at the home was in his 60s, the mother was in her 50s and the son was in his 30s, the Register reported.
Officials are also trying to determine how the deaths seemingly went unnoticed for so long. The home where the victims were found is located inside a gated community in Orchard Hills, according to the Register .
As Bingham noted to ABC7, a Homeowners' Association is "responsible for at least some of the lawn care and maintenance for the front of the homes" in the community.
"So, looking at the home at a glance, it's not immediately apparent that somebody hasn't been in and out of the home for maybe up to a year," he said.

Irvine police on Wednesday found the severely decomposed bodies of three adults in a residence in what appears to have been a murder-suicide.
Officers went to the home at 58 Riverboat at about 10:30 a.m. to do a welfare check on behalf of Canadian authorities, who had been contacted by extended family when they could not contact the relatives for more than a year, according to Lt. Bill Bingham of the Irvine Police Department.
When officers arrived they found the severely decomposed bodies, Bingham said. Police did not find any signs of forced entry in the home, and the evidence suggests it was a domestic-related incident that ended with a murder-suicide, Bingham said.
Investigators suspect the bodies were that of a father, mother and son, who lived there, but it will take some time to positively identify them because the bodies were so decomposed, Bingham said.
Bingham said investigators did not want to detail what led them to suspect a murder-suicide at this time.

Three 'severely decomposed' bodies found in Irvine home investigated as murder-suicide
Authorities in Irvine are investigating a possible murder-suicide after the remains of three people were found inside a home Wednesday morning.

"Responding officers entered the home and discovered three severely decomposed bodies inside that appeared to be adults," police said.
The home didn't have any signs of forced entry, and there were "some indications" that the deaths were tied to a "domestic related incident that resulted in a murder-suicide," police said.
Further information was not available Wednesday.

Irvine police found the decomposed bodies of three adults in a residence on Wednesday, April 6, in what appears to have been a murder-suicide that took place several months ago.
Officers went to the home on Riverboat at about 10:30 a.m. to do a welfare check on behalf of Canadian authorities, who had been contacted by extended family when they could not contact the relatives for more than a year, Lt. Bill Bingham said.

Three Decomposing Bodies Found in Upscale $2.4 Million California Home, Could Have Been There Over a Year
Southern California officers found three decomposing bodies inside an upscale home in a gated community in Irvine, according to local reports.
According to KTLA, officers with the Irvine Police Department arrived at 58 Riverboat at around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday Extended family members in Canada contacted local authorities after they couldn’t reach the family, prompting the gruesome discovery.
“Responding officers entered the home and discovered three severely decomposed bodies inside that appeared to be adults,” Irvine police said.
The deceased victims were reportedly family members, including a father, mother, and son. However, since the bodies were so badly decomposed, authorities couldn’t make a positive identification of any of the bodies.
Police said there was no forced entry at the home but there was evidence that suggested there was a possible murder-suicide. A handgun was discovered inside the residence, according to Irvine police Lt. Bill Bingham.
ABC 7 reports that Bingham indicated that the homeowners’ association typically takes care of the front lawns of the gated community’s homes, which explained why the family’s yard had been maintained.
“As I understand it, there’s a homeowners’ association that’s responsible for at least some of the lawn care and maintenance for the front of the homes,” Bill Bingham said. “Looking at the home at a glance it’s not immediately apparent that somebody hasn’t been in and out of the home for maybe up to a year.”

Irvine police found the decomposed bodies of three adults in a residence on Wednesday, April 6, in what appears to have been a murder-suicide that took place more than a year ago.
Officers went to the home on Riverboat at about 10:30 a.m. to do a welfare check on behalf of Canadian authorities, who had been contacted by extended family when they could not contact the relatives for more than a year, Lt. Bill Bingham said.

They found the severely decomposed bodies, in the home and re-sealed the house before requesting a warrant to further investigate. Officers recovered a handgun near one of the people who died. It was not immediately known if any of them had fired the weapon.
Police believe the people in the home were a mother in her 50s, a father in his 60s and a son in his 30s. However, coroner’s officials had not positively confirmed their identities as of Thursday afternoon.
Officials had not specified whether all the people found inside the home lived there. Police did not say if any of them had previously been reported missing, and it was unclear why it took so long for anyone to notice something was amiss.
Police did not find any signs of forced entry in the home and an initial investigation led detectives to believe domestic violence ended with a murder-suicide, Bingham said.
Investigators were using attempting to use dental records to confirm the identities of the people who died, because they were unable to obtain fingerprints from them, Orange County Coroner’s spokeswoman Carrie Braun said. It may take well over a week before authorities are able to release their names, Bingham said.
