What the owner says.........'Stromboli' is something of an institution and her passages have been featured in Yachting Monthly on a number of occasions. She is the archetypal long distance cruising vessel with a very comfortable motion at sea- she will not slam! From the Cape Verdes to Antigua we touched the tiller once, the rest of the time she was steered by the wind-vane- she is beautifully balanced. Ideally suited to visit remote places as she has substantial fuel and water capacity and heavy displacement also gives good internal volume for both crew and stores. She easily fulfils the '20/20' rule where full working sail can be carried in 20 knots of wind with an angle of no more than 20 degrees. She is as bullet proof as any boat can be and she has looked after us in over 15,000 miles of ocean and coastal passage making. For anyone wanting a safe and well tested crusing boat then Stromboli should be considered.

Forecabin with V shaped double berth. Saloon with port side L shaped settee/berth with pilot berth above, starboard side sette/berth, starboard quarter berth with navigation table at head of berth. Galley to port with 2 sinks, Taylors cooker,refrigerator with Frigoboat keel cooled low amperage cooler,(can make ice even in Tropics!) galley rebuilt in 2005. Heads compartment with Taylors Lavac toilet and PVC holding tank. Heating from Taylors paraffin stove. Upholstery renewed 2003

Designed by Alan Pape and built by Skentelbery and Sons of Plymouth. GRP hull with 3/4" marine ply screwed to mahogany deck beams and encapsulated in white GRP The hull was epoxied from new. Volvo (model 2003)3 cylinder diesel developing 29hp (new in 1995) and driving a fixed 3 bladed propeller. Fuel comsumption approximately 2 litres/hour. "Divo" is one of the last 40 foot Saltram Saga's built by Skentelbery and Sons in Plymouth England. This very nice lined S-shaped classic is sturdy finished to a the standard as a long distance cruiser. Space, safety, ease of maintenance, seaworthy are just a few key words to discribe her.

65 amp alternator. 80 watt solar panel.

The engine was built before 1989 but was crated and in the manufacturers wrapping until commissioned in 1989. It is fitted with a 2:1 reduction gearbox.

The engine bearers and available space will suit a Nanni 29 hp if so desired. With the 1 1/4" stainless steel shaft the prop size can be increased to 18" as it is strong enough and the space is available.

Construction

Heavily laid up grp hull with a cast iron keel fastened to the hull with steel keel studs and fastening nuts. Hull was epoxied from new below the waterline. The deck is two layers of 3/8" marine ply, laminated and fastened over laminated, mahogany deck beams. This is fully epoxy resin and glass matting sheathed topped with deck paint. This forms a very practical, long lasting and low maintenance deck. The deck design gives good side deck width and a great working foredeck.

Alan Pape, the designer, has taken the well liked double ender Colin Archer design and adapted it for grp construction. This gives an increased ballast ratio for better sailing performance.

The rudder is hung on the stern post.

The hull is very deep giving adequate headroom forward without the need for a coachroof, again, adding to the strength of the hull.

The hull only was professionally built by Skentlebery and remaineder was completed by the owner to a very high standard. Particular attention was given to the stanchion mounts, through deck fastenings and the bulwark coping.

Accommodation

The forward cabin provides the double Vee berth. The three other berths are singles. The saloon seating does not convert. There is a very nice saloon table - very solid, just like everything else on theis yacht !

This Saltram 36 is a superb and rare find. She is an exceptional long distance cruising yacht. There is nothing fancy or flimsy about her, just a great solid, well built yacht.

The fit out is a credit to the owner, who purchased the hull from new form Skentlebery and completed the high quality fit out himself. Everything is very substantial with added aim of minimal maintenance.

I'm sure many will question the enqine choice and size but it is a low revving, high torque motor swinging a large diameter prop and seems pefectly adequate.

With its new sails, this boat is ready to go. She would make a perfect yacht for a couple but can be easily handled single handed.

I think the double ended design and the flat decks give her real style.

The Saltram 36, (also known as the Saga 36) was designed by Alan Pape based on the Colin Archer double-ended style of sailing lifeboat hulls, renowned for their seaworthiness. This modern take is substantially quicker than her design predecessors thanks to a higher ballast ratio and Bermudian rig. Long-keeled and heavy displacement, cutter rigged and has clear flush decks making her the ideal choice for offshore sailing. They were built (and in her case fully fitted out) by KR Skentelbery and Sons at the Laira Yard in Plymouth and this is hull number One!

On deck to me she is seamanlike, (decks flush, hatches raised!) with a deep cockpit and feels safe and secure as you move around. The cutter rig allows her to perform efficiently in a variety of conditions and can sail crewed or single-handed with ease.

Down below she has a seagoing style layout, a good sized pilot berth just aft of the forward facing chart table, the galley close to the companionway and a comfortable saloon and forward cabin giving berths for 6 if fully crewed with ample usable stowage throughout. The interior is surprisingly light and bright, up to 2m headroom helps with that but she still retains a traditional feel which makes for a very pleasant living space

This particular example, the first 36 built has a lot of history, including the OSTAR and has spent the last 12 years as a cruising liveaboard, continuously maintained and cared for by experienced owners. The standing rigging was renewed in 2013, the engine replaced in 2014 and the main now fully battened with lazy jacks. An electric windlass and bow thruster help with handling and she is well equipped both to sail and as a home. She is very clean and well presented from the bilges up and is currently ashore awaiting her next adventure

Here is a chance to buy a piece of Devon and Maritime history. This Saltram 36 was the last one ever built and she was built by the owner of the company.

The Saltram 36 was designed as a classic blue water go anywhere cruising boat and her layout both on deck and below are very seaworthy and practical but she doesn’t feel cramped or enclosed when sitting in port.

She has been very little used and still feels and looks new. Her price is at the higher end of the market for a 36 foot cruising yacht but her pedigree and condition warrant it.
