Quant 23: Why this radical Dukes of Hazzard throwback is one of the most fun, exciting designs in years

  • Toby Hodges
  • October 14, 2015

The Quant 23 is a boat that puts the sparkle back into everyman sailing, whether you want to fly or not

quant 23 sailboat

All this foiling malarkey turns a lot of people off. The pumped-up, Red Bull-fuelled adrenaline junkies flying around on ludicrously expensive exotic mulitihulls – before falling of the skinny foils at break-neck speeds. It may be great to watch in short bursts, but the reality is very far removed from conventional sailing.

The only realistic options for those who want to experience flight on the water is perhaps a course in the highly skilled and delicate art of Moth sailing (a diet may also be required) – or to hop aboard a hydrofoiling ferry.

The Gunboat G4 is another choice of course – if you happen to be a millionaire with enough bravado to match your deep pockets, Holland Composites will build you one

Thankfully more realistic alternatives are arriving. In the August issue for example Matt reported on the Whisper cat .

Quant 23

The Quant 23 is claimed to be the first foiling keelboat – but in reality is so much more…

When I first saw the pictures of this Quant 23 foiling off Cowes this summer however, I admit to being pessimistic… A foiling keelboat? And with such a ‘different’ shape? It could never work, could it?

I am delighted to report that my misgivings have been proven wrong.

Last week I finally had the chance to get up close and personal to the Quant 23 during European Yacht of the Year trials in Italy . Through speaking with Quant’s founder Michael Aeppli and her designer Hugh Welbourn, the creator of the Dynamic Stability System (DSS), I came to realise and appreciate this project properly. (See the full description of this ‘gentleman’s foiler’ as they describe her HERE )

Along with my fellow judges we spent most of the week praying for more than the average 2-5 knot zephyrs to see if this orange skimming dish would fly. And during our final day, and our one brief spell of 8-11 knots breeze, that happened. Two Scandinavian members of our jury, both foiling virgins, flew on their first outing, an eye-opening display in front of the other envious judges.

Quant 23 foiling

The Quant 23 takes flight during our European Yacht of the Year trials in Italy – note how little breeze there is on the surface

But whether it was while outpacing all of the other boats in light breeze displacement mode aboard the Quant or witnessing her take flight, two things stood out:

  • I can’t quite believe Quant’s creators had never heard of Dukes of Hazzard – if this isn’t a spitting image of the starring Dodge Charger called General Lee, what is? I have a strong feeling the tango coloured Quant, the contemporary scow, has the brash ability take on a cult status in the sailing world too.

Quant 23

  • Don’t look at this as purely the world’s ‘first foiling keelboat’ – which is what all the hype will make you believe. No, this is, first and foremost, an awesome sportsboat. Visionary British designer Hugh Welbourn drew her for lake sailing in Switzerland – where 80 per cent of the time Aeppli sails in less than 10 knots he says.

The superlight scow platform looks different and provides a stable raft from which to enjoy high-speed fun (preferably in flat water!). This is no twitchy carbon toothpick, the Quant has a large cockpit and plenty of space for real amateur to get accustomed to her, or even hang out on the wire.

Quant 23

The Quant 23 can be sailed by two or three people, as a trapeze sportsboat or a foiler

But those vast foils mean the Quant 23 has two other modes. The first is DSS stability: push the curved boards half way down so they are only slightly submerged and you have two giant stabilisers adding to an already stable platform.

Rather than just providing leeward lift for righting moment though, these boards, combined with a T-foil rudder, provide enough lift for full flight. So foiling is the third mode, the turbo, and one that is achievable in very little wind too (around 10 knots). Easy flight in low wind speeds was always the goal over top end speed – something I think Quant has achieved.

Here is a video I took onboard showing the foils, explained by Michael Aeppli, and showing the relative simplicity of the boat.

Most importantly this is an approachable, fun boat. Rather than trying to conform to a one-design class or trying to rate to any rules, it simply puts the all-out excitement back into day sailing. From the moment you set eyes on the Quant 23, you will remain intrigued. And you certainly won’t want to step off it in a hurry. Take a less experienced crewmember out – stick them out on the wire – and enjoy new age sailing.

“If you can sail a dinghy properly, you can sail our boats,” says Aeppli. “It’s a raft, a very stable shape, a skimming dish if you fall off the foils, but one that’s also very pleasant to sail without foils,” Welborn agrees. The scow provides stability against nose-diving, and if you fall over, one person can stand on the bulbed keel and right it (the hull weighs just 130kg).

Quant 23

“This boat is an exercise in logic,” Welbourn continued. “An easy to sail sportsboat or a foiling boat for Joe Bloggs.”

This is the prototype model, before Quant goes into production with the 23 with very few changes . At €60–65k it’s still perhaps prohibitively expensive for many. But think about the ramifications of this design. Many of us will have grown up sailing a Topper or even a Fireball, and will know the forgiving yet exciting possibilities of a scow-shaped dinghy. Add in the performance of a Flying Dutchman, with 60 years of technology gains and you start to get the picture.

Scale this super-charged Quant 23 down one notch in length, and you have a two-man sports scow. And then perhaps a single-handed dinghy version? Where do I sign?!

The Quant 23, the first keelboat to fly on foils

The Quant23 is a prototype keelboat equipped with the new DSS (Dynamic Stabily Systems) foil that allows it to take off and fly above the water, even at 10 knots, upwind. Currently tested in Switzerland, it will be produced in series.

Chloé Torterat

Dynamic Stabilty Systems (DSS). Architect Hugh Welbourn has been developing the famous patented DSS system for over 10 years. It is a retractable hydrofoil that when deployed downwind generates a vertical thrust that increases the boat's righting torque. This gives the effect of an extra full crew to the recall, in the lines, to the wind or to a heavier keel , but without increasing the weight of the whole, which increases the performance exponentially. The DSS foil now equips a wide variety of racing yachts from the repeat winner of the Rolex Sydney Hobart , Wild Oats XI, to Infiniti racing cruisers , sportsboats, Mini 6.50s etc.

The Quant 23, a flying boat

Now the DSS foil also provides vertical thrust, which combined with a T-shaped foil on the Quant23's rudder, allows it to fly completely above the water. The Quant23 is the first boat to be tested with the new foil and the latest DSS sportsboat designed by Hugh Welbourn for QuantBoats, the Swiss shipyard that builds the Quant28 and Quant30. Michael Aeppli of QuantBoats explains: "Today the QuantBoats team is the most experienced in producing DSS equipped sailboats. Having spent a lot of time sailing these DSS boats, we knew there were many other positive aspects to DSS, which led us to dream of flying for example. Those who sailed on the Quant28 could feel that we were not far from it, even if the boat was not designed for it. And then 'flying' became the norm after the 2013 America's Cup."

quant 23 sailboat

To verify that the Quant 23 could fly, tests were carried out at the beginning of June in Cowes, a port on the Isle of Wight. And indeed, the hull started to take off, before flying on the water. The Quant 23 is a true foiler (with a fixed keel ) and differs greatly from a Moth or an AC72. While the latter are racing boats requiring physical effort, skill and training , the Quant 23 can be used by anyone. "The idea is simply a boat that anyone can step on and fly 10 minutes later" explains the architect.

"With the Quant23, the goal was not to create the fastest boat, but the easiest boat to fly in all stability, bringing a lot of fun, and great speed in most conditions. For us, this means that the boat should do 90% of the work, not the crew, which is mainly the case with other flying boats we see today, with complicated systems to manage, optimize and maintain all the time adds Aeppli.

quant 23 sailboat

To achieve this performance, the new DSS foil is extremely stable compared to the inverted T configuration of the Moth, for example. This new foil, Welbourn confirms, favors a fast takeoff (flying with as little wind as possible) rather than high top speeds, which would require a smaller foil with a less powerful profile. "It's about finding the right balance to fly a three-person crew and a keelboat with a 60 kg keel bulb without any problems." says Welbourn. And he adds that this new generation of boats can be adapted to larger boats, within the limits of physics of course. While its ability to fly is the Quant23's primary selling point, it also has a rather futuristic look, with a scow hull and very low freeboard, a truncated bow for maximum forward volume, a long live chine and a slanted liveab. This powerful and stable hull, Welbourn says, allows the boat to do without ladders or other such complicated devices, making it easier to build and sail. You don't even have to move the crew back and forth to change the angle of attack of the foil: "We were able to see that we don't even have to play with the boat's trim actually."

In terms of performance, even if it is still too early to tell, the Quant 23 can fly comfortably on the beam (broad and short beam) at 20 knots, but is also capable of flying upwind at 10 knots. " Since day one, we've managed to fly upwind, in little wind, and that's also why the foils are so long."

Quant 23 : Hammer: The first keelboat takes off

Quant 23: Hammer: The first keelboat takes off

"Lift off on the very first test run: the Quant 23 prototype has already successfully completed its maiden flight. Project initiator Michael Aeppli from Quant Boats in Switzerland enthuses: "Even at 12 knots, the boat got onto the foils with a crew of three, just like that. Amazing!" This makes the Quant 23 the first sailing boat with a fixed keel (ballast content 60 kilograms) that can "fly". Proof of the picture.

Designer Hugh Welbourn has been working on the innovative DSS technology (Dynamic Stability System) for more than ten years and is its spiritual father. How DSS works: asymmetrical profiles that can be extended to the side of the hull generate additional buoyancy downwind, which increases the righting moment with a leverage effect. This can significantly reduce the amount of ballast on keelboats. In co-operation with Quant Boats in Switzerland (Quant 28 and Quant 30) and with Infinity Yachts in Monaco (Infinity 36GT and under construction Infinity 46R), Hugh Welbourn finally brought the DSS system to series maturity. The projects, the boats and the physics were presented in detail in YACHT 16/2011.

  Quant 23

Now the DSS function has been joined by another dimension: the vertical lift. The latest technology from Welbourn combines the functionality of DSS with flexible V-shaped aerofoil foils, each of which is extended to leeward. In combination with additional hydrofoils on the rudder blade, the foils on the Quant 23 generate enough lift for the boat to take off at a certain speed, i.e. to foil. A similar technology in combination with tilting keels is currently being used on the latest Offshore racing yachts in the Imoca Open 60 class tried out. However, these large yachts do not actually fly, but are only partially lifted and, above all, righted on the fast reaching courses. As Michael Aeppli from Quant-Boats reported to YACHT-Online, the question of whether this French version of DSS infringes the worldwide DSS patent has not yet been clarified.

Quant 23

The 7.08 metre long and 1.96 metre wide Quant 23 has a scow hull. This is intended to give the boat high initial stability in the floating phases, i.e. for launching and manoeuvres. The boat is an epoxy-glass construction with carbon fibre reinforcements. According to the specifications, the ready-to-sail or ready-to-fly weight is just 270 kilograms, including all flexible and fixed wings and 60 kilograms of ballast in the keel. Incidentally, this can be taken up by means of a tackle attached to the mast. The foils can also be completely removed. This means that the flyweight can be transported on a road trailer with little effort and can also be slipped via a ramp.

After the first trial runs in England, the prototype is now being tested and extensively sailed in at Quant Boats in Switzerland. In principle, the aim is to build a series. Where and with which partners the Quant 30 will ultimately be built has not yet been decided. Aeppli is also unable to give an initial price estimate for the time being.

2016 Sportsboat of the year: Quant 23

SONY DSC

Long a source of bar discussion the Quant 23 finally put to bed the question of whether a keelboat could be a viable foiler. This year the boat astounded when Quant released the first images of the many foiled keelboat hydrofoiling at speed on lake Geneva. The boat uses a combination of canting keel and large, lateral foils.

While the Quant23 is a foiler (albeit with a fixed keel) designer, Hugh Welbourn is at pains to point out that she is otherwise fundamentally different to a Moth or an AC72. While those are grand prix racers, demanding athleticism, great skill and technique to sail, the new boat does not: “The idea is simply a boat that anyone can leap into and ten minutes later they’re flying.”

Her looks are possibly the ultimate expression of function over form, with the scow shape helping carry volume all the way forward ultimately providing a very safe, stable platform with the righting moment required to get the boat foiling.

Quant 23, a foiling sailboat we love in 7m range. VIDEO

The Q23 is a sportsboat, which can also fly or a foiler which also is one of the fastest sportsboat in the 7m range. However – this boat is an exciting addition to today’s offers in this segment.

The Quant 23 was elected European Yacht of the Year 2016 in January 2016 by an international jury of yachting journalists after several sailing trials in October in Italy.

In moderate conditions, the Q23 with its good nature and stability is also suitable as a family boat or singlehander. Mast setting and laying, keel lifting etc. is done by hand on the trailer. The 330 kgs light boat is exclusively slipped! Buoy, harbor or dinghy park are equally suitable as a berth.

The Q23 shows performance in foiling as well as in classic mode – even in light winds. The Q23 has proven its versatility and versatility early on and the win of the European Yacht Award 2016 is an expression and reward for the unique and trend-setting concept. “Flying” is possible alone or with a crew of 2 from a good 6kts. With 9kts of wind, 20kts can already be achieved – today the internal speed record is over 27kts.

In moderate conditions, the Q23 with its good nature and exceptional stability is also suitable as a family boat and even as a bathing boat.

america's cup

More than the pure speed potential, the controllability of the boat on the foils is of interest. Unlike other foilers, the Quant 23 has a construction that allows virtually self-stable foiling. 80 – 90% of the “balance work” is done by the boat, the rest by the crew.  This is not the case with all foilers. The Quant 23 spoils its crew with long enjoyable flights. However, if a crash is imminent, the scow bow takes over – flat and with plenty of volume.

Short portrait of the quant 17.

This smaller sister of the Quant 23 is currently in the prototype stage. In principle, it works like the Q23, but as a much smaller boat it is also much livelier and more demanding to sail. Because the target group for such boats is (currently) still small, the investment for a series production is hardly worthwhile at the moment or, conversely, with the currently expected demand, the individual boat would probably be too expensive. It is important to remember that this boat basically has everything you would find in a Q23.
