The medieval fishing port of Great Yarmouth is not only one of Norfolk’s earliest  seaside resorts – having attracted holidaymakers ever since 1760 – it’s also where the Broads flow into the sea and the  gateway between the Northern and Southern Broads river systems.

Whether you are crossing Breydon Water or simply exploring the length of the Bure make sure you stop off at Great Yarmouth to enjoy a day of traditional seaside fun. The town boasts miles of golden sandy beaches bordered by a huge range of attractions plus a historic town to explore and plenty of shopping options.

Fun at the seaside

Most visitors to Great Yarmouth head straight for its famous seafront – The Golden Mile – for its kitsch seaside experience.  This is classic bucket and spade country with Great Yarmouth’s wide, clean central beach offering the perfect place for the kids to play in the sand under the watchful eye of RNLI Lifeguards and the option of deck chair hire and donkey rides.

The beach is flanked by a host of dazzling attractions from amusement arcades to crazy golf.  There is an abundance of cafes, tea rooms and snack stands selling anything from cockles to candy floss, which is perfect to enjoy while meandering along the vibrant promenade between the two Victorian piers.

Don’t miss the Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach, which has the oldest wooden roller coaster in the country, the Scenic Railway, at the south end of the prom, or for little ones head to Joyland, next to the Britannia Pier in the north, for a ride on the world famous snails!   Also on the Golden Mile you will find the Great Yarmouth Sea Life Centre, Merrivale Model Village, bowling alleys and a cinema.

Great Yarmouth is a great place for an evening out and the weekly Wednesday night summer fireworks displays during the school holidays are a real highlight. The evenings start with live music at the Sea Life Centre Gardens from 8pm and culminate with a spectacular display at 10pm.

For more seaside entertainment it’s hard to beat the famous Hippodrome Circus and its water spectaculars (01493 844172). Alternatively, check out the events listings at the Britannia Pier Theatre. 01493 842209.

If you fancy a flutter visit one of Great Yarmouth’s many casinos or head slightly out of town for horse racing at Great Yarmouth Racecourse (01493 84252) If you prefer the Greyhounds don’t miss Yarmouth Stadium (01493 720343) which also hosts stock car races.

History and Heritage

To discover Great Yarmouth’s proud maritime heritage head to its Cultural Quarter on the South Quay where hundreds of fishing boats once docked on the River Yare to unload their catch. Packed full of museums and historic buildings you could spend a whole day admiring this area, which has everything from fine Tudor houses to row cottages as well as the remains of one of the most complete medieval town walls in the UK.

Sights not to be missed include:

  • The award winning Time and Tide Museum of Great Yarmouth Life (01493 743930)
  • The Nelson Museum , which is the only museum in the world dedicated to our National Hero who had a strong connection with Yarmouth (Open: 1 February to 30 November. 01493 850698)
  • The Nelson Monument/Norfolk Naval Pillar (Open: Sundays from June to August)
  • The Tolhouse Gaol, which is one of the oldest gaols in the country telling tales of thieves, smugglers, witches and pirates (Open10am – 4pm Sunday to Friday during Norfolk school holidays only. 01493 858900)
  • The LYDIA EVA – Yarmouth’s last steam drifter. Built in 1930 and now fully restored and moored on the South Quay the Lydia Eva charts the history of fishing in Great Yarmouth. (Open: May to October. 07500 603734.

If you are in need of some retail therapy Great Yarmouth town centre has plenty of shopping options from high street stores to unique, family-run shops.

The market, which is one of the largest and oldest town markets in the UK dating back to the early medieval period, is a great place to start your shopping experience.

The covered section of the market is open six days per week selling everything from fish and chips to groceries and household items. A larger open-air market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday year round, with an additional market visiting the town on Fridays in summer too. A wide range of high street brands and independent shops surround the market place.

If you are looking for a quaint shopping experience with lots of small boutiques visit the Victoria Arcade and the historic Rows leading off the market place. And for something more lively don’t miss the pedestrianised Regent Road, which runs between the town centre and the seafront and is beautifully lit up with street decorations at night.

If you are looking to stock up on food for your holiday Great Yarmouth has a number of supermarkets, including Aldi and Asda, which are a short walk from the moorings at Great Yarmouth Yacht Station.  Great Yarmouth also has a train station plus all the other amenities you might require from banks to pharmacies.

Ratings and reviews

Location and contact.

This place is amazing. The friendliest fish and chip staff I’ve ever encountered. The price is right, the food is right and the decor is really nice. The guys who work here love their job clearly and ordering food is fun. A great place and... the staff are an asset to the owner. More

This place was suggested to us as most local chippies seemed to be cooking in beef fat and for dietary reasons we needed to find one cooking in vegetable oil. Having confirmed that they did we had two cod and chips and drove up the... road to eat it as close to the sea as we could. It was cooked fresh and was very good. Nice batter. They also do scraps! The shop itself was clean and the woman serving was helpful and cheerful. It was about 7pm on a Thursday and it was getting quite busy but the wait wasn't too long and was worth it. The menu was extensive inclusing veggie options such as halloumi and pineapple fritters. Worth the 7 mile drive from our guest house. I didn't realise so many chippies were still cooking in beef fat or had reverted to it but I think they should state on websites/facebook and even in store what they are cooking in. More

On a boating holiday moored at Great Yarmouth for one night and wandering around the town on a Sunday evening trying to find something for dinner. We came across this fabulous chippy. It was spotlessly clean, really nicely set up so you could sit and... eat there if you wanted to. The staff were in smart uniforms and .... the chips were just great! We shared an extra long battered sausage and chips and they were delicious, back on the boat with a bottle of vino. Good times. We will be back. More

Just ordered 2 cod and chips also a savaloy it was awful, fish very dry savaloy was cold and so were chips. A waste of money we normally go to Salisbury Rd a shame we didn't go there but tried Northgate St that is more... local to us. Shame I'm a insulin dependent diabetic as I had done my injection and have to eat straight away I would have taken it back otherwise. More

I called into PJ's for the first time in about 2 years after work this evening. Greeted with a friendly SMILE by owner and serving staff. Ordered 2 Haddoc & 1 lot of Chips. What can I say... Absolutely Delicious... Freshly cooked and piping hot... when I got home. If I had a vote I'd say PJ's is by far the best fish n chips in Great Yarmouth & has been for all the years I've lived here. Thanks Andy for a delicious supper. See you again soon. Richie ~ More

Excellent fish and chips, hot, crispy batter and lovely chips. Brilliant value too. Deducted a point because the mushy peas were watery and a bit past their sell by date. But overall well worth the extra walk from the sea front and highly recommended.

We went to this chippy from the beach (a bit of a walk, but well worth it). We found it from reviews on Google. It lived up to the good reviews and more. A very extensive menu. All the food was excellent and freshly cooked.... Lots of little extras like free buns etc. The staff were great, very friendly and helpful. Thoroughly recommended. More

We were on a day trip to Great Yarmouth, whilst at the seaside fish and chips are a must. Checked reviews and went out of our way to find PJs. We were greeted with a warm friendly welcome, enjoying a bit of banter with the... owner. There were seats inside so we ate inside. Fantastic quality we really enjoyed it. More

Fed our family here (four adults + 2 hungry kids) for just over £32. Really tasty, good fish (rock salmon that we never see at home, yumm), fresh cooked and friendly service. Five minutes walk from the Yacht Station so ideal for boaters passing through.

My dad loves fish and chips and (as this place is in walking distance) we go there quite a lot. I have never had more than a 5 minute wait- and that 5 minutes was because my cousin wanted a vegetarian burger. The food has... always been delicious; no matter what you have and I should know as I think my dad has eaten every single thing on the menu. Quite cheap as well. I can find no fault. More

Weekend at Haven and Googled best Fish and Chips, PJs there but not as many reviews as Crystal, so really PJs was second choice. Went to Crystal walked into a full room of miserable looking people obviously waiting for a long time, two staff arguing,... completely ignored me! Walked out and drove straight to PJs, Fish and Chips straight out of the fryer, absolutely Perfect, nothing left on the plate, would highly recommend. More

I find PJs' on Northgate Street totally over-rated by people, the last few times I have been there the chips have been awful, cheap powdery tasting rubbish, I do like the Fish Bites they fry have no complaints about them, the Cod is OK but... when it's been standing for a length of time in the overhead heaters it tends to get dried out. More

i went to his shop explained i was coeliac he told me what he did and i had to most lovely fish and chips and mushy peas plus a slice of lemon no reaction at all made my night

We loved this place nice friendly staff, clean and local, we watched the man with the nice accent batter our fish fresh to order (while we perished the local leaflets and cool fish chart) and we even got to choose which bit of fish! Haha... He was telling us about the model village on the front which we're gonna investigate today ! The food was soo good (nice bread rolls always a winner with Mowgli) and the Mushy Peas outta this worrlld we'll definitely be going back : ) More

We used this as our local chippy from we moved here but the last two visits the quality has been poor. The last awful! Chips hard, the fish so thin & the batter chewy. Such a shame as really used to be lovely. I was... recommended here & I have recommended to others but not anymore. Sorry but we won't be returning! More

Gt Yarmouth & Gorleston Sailing Club

Sailing , Swim & Sup 1949 – 2024

Another season is fast approaching, we are only four weeks away from the SOS on the 14th April.

Just to whet you appetite and a reminder of last years sailing there’s a 2023 compilation video on the club Flickr site

https://www.flickr.com/photos/gygsc/53502024957/in/album-72177720314523269/ 2023 ….

A light SEer’ly greeted members on sunday for the final Act of the Autumn series. With LW imminent there was plenty of beach to launch for the nine boats that ventured out.

Race 1 – SE F2. The tide was still ebbing at the start of the race. Dave & Keith caused a bit of ‘excitement’ at the start ….

After a few weeks of either too much wind or no wind, it was good to get back on the water for Act 6 of the Autumn series.  We were joined on the prom by some impressive classic vehicles ranging from scooters to some very large American cars. Later in the day we were also joined by the Horse and carts ….

GYGSC is a small friendly informal club with probably the best sea sailing in Norfolk. We sail on Sundays & Thursday evenings throughout the summer. A range of dinghy and cat classes are sailed including D1, Fireball, Formula 18 cat, 505, Laser, Laser 4000, Phantom,   RS300, RS400, RS500, RS600,RS700 & RS800, Shadow Cat

GYGSC is located on the Gorleston side of the inner harbour mouth next to the Pier hotel and fronting onto the promenade.  The club dinghy Park is secure as it is surrounded by a six foot high fence. A ramp located near the club runs between the promenade and the beach. This provides access to the sea which allows launching in all tides and most weather situations.

  • The yacht pond at Gorleston

Photograph of young sailors trying out their latest craft on the pond

By martin keable.

Great Yarmouth had two model yacht ponds during the period up to the 1950's. There was a thriving model yacht club in the town with many of the craft being  constructed at home by their owner. The skill was all down to how you set your sails before a run across the water - the thought of the radio contolled craft of to-day would  probably have appealed to these yougsters but would have been met with a stony silence by the older generation. The Yarmouth pond is now a part of the Pleasure Beach complex-when you descend the log flume ride you are splashing down into the water of the old yacht pond. The pond at Gorleston still exists but is no longer the scene for budding yachtsmen to learn the ropes.

Two children sailing their yacht on the Gorleston yacht pond

Great Yarmouth Musuems

I can remember going here and watching punch and judy with my elder sister and cousin. There was also a guiness clock.

We love going to Gorleston, and by the looks of it the boating lake hasn't changed abit!

Happily Gorleston is undergoing a renaissance lately with the Yacht pond being used more & major improvements to the Cafes, hotels, Pier Gardens & of course the Pavillion Theatre bringing the Sea front area up to date but still retaining its character.

Hi there you Gorlestonians, nice site about the yacht pond. The photograph says it all, for what its worth.  I have been using the pond since coming to live in Gorleston in the 60s.  All 3 of my children grew up using the swimming pool, the pond and glorious beach and I have to say I could not have had a better place to live in.  Getting back to our yacht pond, in my time it has been sadly neglected now a Grade 3 listed site the latest damage was done to the floor hence it now leaks. The pump packed up whilst filling the pond for Easter, is it possible to apply for funds from the Lottery to build a new wall and floor and render. I am sure we have a builder that would love to make his mark on the pond's future.  I have used this pond since the 60s, am now 77 and never tire of using it.  Many more come from far and near to use it.  A chap brought his boat on holiday to sail it on our pond he was from Fleetwood so you have to admit it is well used.  We have a thriving model club who keeps an eye on its upkeep.  The poor old Council does its best but sadly its not all that important - they do not realise what a feature it is.  I treasure the conversations over the years when visitors want to speak of their love of this area that we all take for granted.  Kind regards, see you on the pond.  John Clifford

I visited the boating lake on Sunday 23rd April after hearing that it was being repaired. I understand that it is to be ready for May Bank holiday weekend for the sinking of the Titanic! I may launch my Submarine if that is permitted!

Hi Paul at last a reply to this site on the ifs & buts of what is going on at the pond.  It is going fine after the Easter promises did not come to anything, weather has not helped council can't be blamed for that one.  Your submarine is most welcome as is any other model boat the more the merrier.  The pond is so important to the town as is Gorleston Football Club but that's another story, next season give it a look as it needs supporting.  Back to the pond how about a model sailing club Micro Magics for starters great to teach youngsters you do not need a chairman etc just a night for any one who wants a sail and enjoy the pond, it is listed now and one of the very few left.  I talk to many holidaymakers from UK and even abroad of our pond they say how lucky we are to have such a facility.  It's free but you might have a problem with parking the car but shortly you will be able to park at the pier car park - pay & display.  Have a pint and a meal at the Pier Hotel then sail your boat.  Thats enough mardling for now hope you feel like giving a reply or email me at cliffordjohn8@hotmail.co.uk   I like a mardle

John, better late than never!  I too like to mardle and visit the Yacht Pond whenever I can.  I understand that the Yacht Pond shall be 100 year young sometime in 2019.  Now that would be something to celebrate!  I have emailed you to have a mardle!  Keep smiling, Paul.

The Yacht Pond needs and deserves frequent maintenance in order for it to survive as a focal point and main attraction.  Many who have no wish to use or own a yacht or other craft to sail on the pond enjoy visiting and watching those that do.  I hope the people of Gorleston on Sea and those that visit from time to time will should it become necessary support the future of the Yacht Pond.  I remain interested in any information relating to the building of the Yacht Pond and can be contacted at the e mail address shown below.  Thank you for your time...enjoy the Yacht Pond!  Paul Rogers.  Email address: beyond1957@gmail.com

Hello out there,

At last the Yacht Pond has been emptied, repaired and filled with fresh water. The pond became salt water after the storms of December 2013 and it has taken all this time to put it right. However the pond needs to be treated to reduce the growth of algae. As of today 7/4/16 it is already on the march. The Yacht Pond is an asset to the seafront and attracts many visitors who I reckon spend money at the numerous refreshment outlets. I recommend Pond Blue treatment in early March each year which is topped up at 10% rate each month until early October to restrict algae, weed and other material. Frequent cleaning is also required, which should fall under general maintenance by the Local Authority. The Yacht Pond is grade 3 listed and should be maintained so that it can be enjoyed. The Local Authority and or contracted concerned need to take care of this asset!
