MacGregor 25 Rudder

1st Time Sailer
While sailing last summer on our MacGregor 25, the rudder literaly broke off. I need a new rudder (preferably) or will need to build a new one. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You' re going to give 1st time sailor a heart attack! The kick-up design is great, but it's expensive. Heck, even the rudder alone is expensive - http://www.ruddercraft.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=43&products_id=110 I have the HDPE rudder on my 26S. They are nice if you have the $$
Keep them coming Thanks for the links. I've seen both of these during my searches, the kick up and the standard HDPE. Any others? What about designs to build a new fiberglass rudder for this boat?
I modified my ol'rudder on a 26D a few yrs ago, 3+in. leading edge and 8in longer, re-glassed and its worked great....but that was the only rudder I had, so I decided to make a new one. I watched all the post here on rudders I could, and decided to make a new one outta 3/4 Marine ply doubled up for 1.5 in. thick a 12% foil, 14 cord, 58in. long and a 56in. long .500 steel bar incerted 5in. behind the leading edge.= streangth + a lill added wght. so far its 4lbs.less then my ol'rudder. Im getten ready to use the West syst. and close it up and start laying on the glass. gonna finish up the camber needed to give me the final 12% thats just missing when you use 1.5 thickness, anyway I'm gonna lay up a few pcs of cloth there and fair it in to get 12% BTW I used a 4.5 disc from WoodCraft to shape out the rudder...I had it shapped out in 15 min. :dance: and a beltsander and 5in. orbital to fair it up. hope this gives U some ideas
Rudder Build I went overboard, no pun intended, in a previous life I built model sailplane wings using vacuum bagged foam covered with epoxy and fiberglass. I cut a NACA 0012 airfoil out of foam, vacuumed bagged it, removed the foam and used marine plywood to fill the void. The plywood was a loose fit so I used Polyester resin and glass to fill the rest. Its 4” longer with about 3.5” wider than the stock M25 rudder. 2.5 inches of the added width is forward of the hinge line. That being said there are lots of very good post on this site with detailed instructions on how to build a better rudder. I think the true airfoil shape contributes a lot to the improvement in performance. These boats have basic controls, anything you can do to upgrade them helps. If I can figure out how to post a picture I’ll send one along Erik

Macgregor 25
Macgregor 25 is a 25 ′ 0 ″ / 7.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Roger MacGregor and built by Macgregor Yacht Corp between 1973 and 1987.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

The existing rudder is ripped open at the bottom and badly de-laminated around the damage (probably from the grounding that damaged the keel trunk).
