Wizz is a 14 ′ 5 ″ / 4.4 m monohull sailboat designed by Jean Marie Finot (Groupe Finot) and built by Beneteau between 1981 and 1983.

Drawing of Wizz

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

First 14

A light, modern, wide and flat planing hull design and wave-piercing bow result in a very stable dinghy, built with high-quality vacuum infusion sandwich technology.

First 14

A wide and stable hull offers safety and comfort, and her open space cockpit make movement quick and easy.

Sailing experience

The First 14 is an ideal entry-level dinghy for one or two sailors – a unique gateway to modern sailing that delivers an exciting sailing experience in an easy-to-handle and accessible package. With a furling and self-tacking jib, a wide and stable hull, and a spacious open cockpit free of tangled ropes, she guarantees endless fun on the water. She is designed to be sailed without a trapeze, and you can easily adjust the sail area depending on the wind strength or crew size without compromising sailing experience, thanks to two centerboard positions. With easy-to-maintain deck equipment, aluminium rig, and dacron sails, she guarantees hassle-free ownership.

Mobility 2.0

Freedom on the water is enhanced by unique removable wheels that will allow you to explore distant shores without the need to return to your starting point. The most hidden, wild and beautiful beaches are now easily accessible like never before.

Hello All. Hope some of you can help me. Looking for more info on the Beneteau Wizz, build in the 80s. Did contact Beneteau, but they do not have much info on file anymore. Bit of Background, I restore boats as a hobby, and found the only Wizz in South Africa in a boatyard. Only the hull is still there, along with a few fittings. Any info or photos will be greatly appreciated as I need to redo foils and mast.

Anyone out there know anything about these boats? Are there any UK users who sails one? I am close to deciding whether to buy a ysed one and any input would be appreciated. Howard

There are many owners etc here Howard (self included), which one are you thinking of buying and how old, extras etc. You will get a good response fairly quickly.

David, This is part of the problem. I do not know except that is about 14 foot, foam filled GRP hull, sails with jib and main uses a wishbine boom and displaces about 70kgs. I have a holding deposit on it subject viewing this weekend. It is advertised on http://www.nationwideboatsales.co.uk/forsale/ViewBoat.asp?Article=1011907412891 . I can find no web pages and the Beneteau site only refers to it in it's history database as being first produced in 82 and still in production. If you look at the brochure shot used in the ad. the main appears to be sleeved onto the mast. I am looking for a cheap, fast fun boat to sail with my lad and this looks good. If you get chance to look at the ad. let me have your impressions. Thanks for the quick response. I have found it hard to find a good, well used forum. Is this the best one? Thanks. Howard

David, Thanks for the advice on the mast mounting. I know that at this price I would be advised to be wary. As to the searches and the Beneteau Owners Club I have done all of those things. I did e-mail Beneteau customer services in France and they have kindly offered to send info (in French). I should be able to handle that with a little help from a dictionary. I was hoping to find a user of this type of boat to get an idea of it's sailing characteristics but what the heck, if it is reasonably sound I will probably go for it. The whole exercise is aimed at getting my son out on the water to see if he takes to it. Hence the wish not to have too much invested in it. I can at least single hand this and get some fun out of it myself. Thanks for the input. Howard

DISCOVER ALL OUR SAILING BOATS AND LUXURY YACHT RANGES

Are you looking for a  sailing yacht dealer ? Leisure boating, short trips, competitive sailing, regattas – whatever type of sailing you like, BENETEAU has a wide range of  sailing yachts  and  luxury yachts , so there’s bound to be a boat to fulfill your dreams.

SAILING YACHTS FOR ANY TYPE OF SAILING

We built our first sailboats over 138 years ago and many things have changed since then. The oak we once relied on has been replaced with strong but lightweight resin and carbon fiber. Where canvas once caught the wind, now it’s Kevlar and Vectran. We’ve transformed dark, confining salons and cabins into bright, open living spaces. And the list of innovations in hull design and navigation continues to grow at a rapidly increasing pace.

However, some things haven’t changed and never will. Benjamin BENETEAU’s philosophy of building the strongest, safest, most beautiful boats on the water is alive and well. The BENETEAU family’s pride in craftsmanship and passion for performance can easily be recognized in every FIRST, FIGARO, OCEANIS, and OCEANIS YACHT built today.

Knowing what to keep and what to change – that’s why BENETEAU continues to set the bar in sailing.

OCEANIS: THE BEST SELLER

FIGARO: OFFSHORE AND PROFESSIONAL RACING

A marvel in racing innovation, the Figaro BENETEAU 3 is the first production foiling one-design monohull to ever grace the seas. Designed in collaboration between BENETEAU and Van Peteghem Lauriot-Prévost (the architects of the last two Vendée Globe winners), her greatest and most visible feature is the inverted foiling system created to reduce drift and improve the righting moment without increasing movement. The Figaro BENETEAU 3’s radical design makes her the logical choice when winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.

SAILING YACHTS SAILING THE FIVE OCEANS

This diversity has led to the BENETEAU brand being represented on all the world’s seas. But wherever they are, BENETEAU boats are easily recognizable for their taut lines, innovative design, robustness and performance. No doubt this will continue, since BENETEAU is constantly reinventing itself to provide ever more enjoyable, high performing, safe and user-friendly recreational craft.
