How Four NFT Novices Created a Billion-Dollar Ecosystem of Cartoon Apes

J ust last year, the four thirtysomethings behind Bored Ape Yacht Club — a collection of 10,000 NFTs, which house cartoon primates and unlock the virtual world they live in — were living modest lifestyles and working day jobs as they fiddled with creative projects on the side. Now, they’re multimillionaires who made it big off edgy, haphazardly constructed art pieces that also act as membership cards to a decentralized community of madcaps. What’s more punk rock than that?

The phenomenal nature of it all has to do with the recent appearance, all over the internet, of images of grungy apes with unimpressed expressions on their faces and human clothes on their sometimes-multicolored, sometimes-metal bodies. Most of the apes look like characters one might see in a comic about hipsters in Williamsburg — some are smoking and some have pizza hanging from their lips, while others don leather jackets, beanies, and grills. The core-team Apes describe the graffiti-covered bathroom of the club itself — which looks like a sticky Tiki bar — in a way that echoes that project’s broader mission: “Think of it as a collaborative art experiment for the cryptosphere.” As for the pixel-ish walls around the virtual toilet, that’s really just “a members-only canvas for the discerning minds of crypto Twitter,” according to a blurb on the website, which recognizes that it’s probably “going to be full of dicks.”

“I always go balls to the wall,” founding Ape Gordon Goner tells Rolling Stone over Zoom. Everything about Goner, who could pass for a weathered 30 or a young 40, screams “frontman,” from his neck tattoo to his sturdy physique to the dark circles under his eyes and his brazen attitude. He’s a risk taker: Back during his gambling-problem days, he admits he’d “kill it at the tables” and then lose it all at the slot machines on the way to the car. He’s also the only one in the group that wasn’t working a normal nine-to-five before the sudden tsunami of their current successes — and that’s because he’s never had a “real job. Not bad for a high school dropout,” he says through a smirk. Although Goner and his comrades’ aesthetic and rapport mirror that of a musical act freshly thrust into stardom, they’re actually the creators of Yuga Labs, a Web3 company.

Goner and his partners in creative crime — Gargamel, No Sass, and Emperor Tomato Ketchup — were inspired by the communities of crypto lovers that have blossomed on platforms like Twitter in recent years. Clearly, people with this once-niche interest craved a destination to gather, discuss blockchain-related developments, and hurl the most inside of inside jokes. Why not, they thought, give NFT collectors their own official home? And Bored Ape Yacht Club was born.

This summer, 101 of Yuga Labs’ Bored Ape Yacht Club tokens, which were first minted in early May, resold for $24.4 million in an auction hosted by the fine-art house Sotheby’s. Competitor Christie’s followed shortly thereafter, auctioning off an art collectors’ haul of modern-day artifacts — which included four apes — for $12 million. Around the same time, one collector bought a single token directly from OpenSea — kind of like eBay for NFTs — for $2.65 million. A few weeks later, another Sotheby’s sale set a new auction record for the most-valuable single Bored Ape ever sold: Ape number 8,817 went for $3.4 million. At press time, tokens related to the Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem — this includes the traditional apes, but also things called “mutant” apes and the apes’ pets — had generated around $1 billion. “My name’s not even Gordon,” says Goner, who, like the rest of Yuga Labs’ inner circle, chooses to hide his true identity behind a quirky pseudonym. “Gordon Goner just sounded like Joey Ramone. And that made it sound like I was in a band called the Goners. I thought that was fucking cool. But when we first started, I kept asking, ‘Are we the Beastie Boys of NFTs?’ Because, right after our initial success it felt like the Beastie Boys going on tour with Madonna: Everyone was like, ‘Who the fuck are these kids?’ ” (Funnily enough, Madonna’s longtime manager, Guy Oseary, signed on to rep the foursome about a month after Goner made this comment to Rolling Stone .) He’s referring to the commotion that immediately followed the first few days of Bored Ape Yacht Club’s existence, when sales were dismal. “Things were moving so slowly in that weeklong presale,” recalls Goner’s more soft-spoken colleague, Emperor Tomato Ketchup. “I think we made something between $30,000 and $60,000 total in sales. And then, overnight, it exploded. All of us were like, ‘Oh fuck, this is real now.’ ” The 10,000 tokens — each originally priced at 0.08 Ethereum (ETH), around $300 — had sold out. While the crypto community may have been asking who they were, the general public started wondering what all the fuss was about. Even Golden State Warriors player Stephen Curry started using his ape as his Twitter profile picture, for all of his 15.5 million followers to behold. 

Bored Ape art isn’t as valuable as it is because it’s visually pleasing, even though it is. It’s valuable because it also serves as a digital identity — for which its owner receives commercial usage rights, meaning they can sell any sort of spinoff product based on the art. The tokens, meanwhile, act like ID cards that give the owners access to an online Soho House of sorts — just a nerdier, more buck-wild one. Noah Davis, who heads up Christie’s online sales department for digital art, says that it’s the “perennial freebies and perks” that solidify the Bored Ape Yacht Club as “one of the most rewarding and coveted memberships.” “In the eyes of most — if not almost all of the art community — BAYC is completely misunderstood,” he says. However, within other tribes of pop culture, he continues, hugely prominent figures cherish the idea of having a global hub for some of the most “like-minded, tech-savvy, and forward-thinking individuals on the planet.” Gargamel is “a name I ridiculously gave myself based off the fact that my fiancée had never seen The Smurfs when we were launching this,” says Goner’s right-hand man, who looks kind of like a cross between the character he named himself after and an indie-music-listening liberal-arts school alum. He’s flabbergasted at the unexpected permanence of it all. “Now, I meet with CEOs of billion-dollar companies, and I’m like, ‘Hi, I’m Gargamel. What is it that you would like to speak to me about?’ ” 

The gang bursts out in laughter.

In conversing, Gargamel and Goner, whose relationship is the connective tissue that brought the others in, are mostly playful — but they do bicker, similar to how a frontman and lead guitarist might butt heads in learning to share the spotlight. They first met in their early twenties at a dive bar, in Miami, where they were both born and raised, and immediately started arguing about books. “He doesn’t like David Foster Wallace because he’s wrong about things,” Goner interjects, cheekily, as Gargamel attempts to tell their story. “He hasn’t even read Infinite Jest . He criticizes him, and yet he’s never read the book! He’s like, ‘Oh, it’s pretentious MFA garbage.’ No, it’s not.” Gargamel then points out that he has read other books by Wallace, while No Sass, who still hasn’t chimed in, flashes a half-smile that suggests they’ve been down this road more than once before. “I think, on the whole, he was the worst thing to happen to fucking MFA programs, given all the things people were churning out,” says Gargamel. They eventually decide to agree that Wallace, like J.D. Salinger, isn’t always interpreted correctly or taught well, and we move on — only after Goner points out the tattoos he got for Kurt Vonnegut and Charles Bukowski “at like 17,” but before diving too deep into postmodernist concepts. Goner and Gargamel’s relationship speaks to how the group operates as a whole, according to No Sass, whose name is self-explanatory. “There’s always a yin and yang going on,” he says. Throughout the call, No Sass continues to make sense of things and keep the others in check in an unwavering manner, positioning him as the backbone of the group — or our metaphorical drummer. “It’s like, I’ll come up with the idea that wins us the game,” Goner says, referencing his casino-traversing past. “And his job is to make sure we make it to the car park.” No Sass’ rhythm-section counterpart is clearly Tomato, the pseudo-band’s secret weapon who’s loaded with talent and harder to read. (He picked his name while staring at an album of the same name by English-French band Stereolab.) The project’s name, Bored Ape Yacht Club, represents a club for people who got rich quick by “aping in” — crypto slang for investing big in something unsure — and, thusly, are too bored to do anything but create memes and debate about analytics. The “yacht” part is coated in satire, given that the digital clubhouse the apes congregate in was designed to look like a dive bar in the swampy Everglades. 

Gargamel, whose college roommate started mining Bitcoin back in 2010, got Goner into crypto in 2017, when the latter was bedridden with an undisclosed illness, bored, and on his phone. “I knew he had a risk-friendly profile,” Gargamel says. “I said, ‘I’m throwing some money into some stupid shit here. You wanna get in this with me?’ He immediately took to it so hard, and we rode that euphoric wave of 2017 crypto up — and then cried all the way down the other side of the roller coaster.” At the start of 2021, they looked at modern relics like CryptoPunks and Hashmasks, which have both become a sort of cultural currency, and they looked at “crypto Twitter,” and wondered what would happen if they combined the collectible-art component with community membership via gamification. The idea was golden but they weren’t technologically savvy enough to know how to build the back end. So, Gargamel called up No Sass and Tomato, who both studied computer science at the same university he had attended for grad school. “I had no idea what was involved in the code for this,” Gargamel admits. “I read something that said something about Javascript, so I called them and said, ‘Do you guys know anything about Javascript?’ And that couldn’t be further from what you’re supposed to know.” While they were tech-savvy, No Sass and Tomato were not crypto-savvy. They both wrote their first lines of solidity code — a language for smart contracts — in February of this year. “I was like, ‘Just learn it! It’s going to be great. Let’s go,’ ” recalls Gargamel. “From a technical perspective, some of the stuff that we’ve built out has had relatively janky workflows, which people then seize upon, asking us how we did it,” says Tomato. “It’s actually stake-and-wire or whatever, but nobody else has done it.” A lot of “stress and fear” went into the first drop, according to No Sass: “We were constantly on the phone going, ‘Oh, shit, is this OK? Is it going to explode?’ ” He shakes his head. “I wish we still had simple NFT drops. We can pump those out superfast now.” “Every single thing we do scares the shit out of me,” adds Tomato.

They started out with unsharpened goals of capitalizing on a very clear trend. But a fter one particularly enervating night of incessant spitballing, Goner realized that all he really wanted was something to do and for like-minded people to talk to in an immersive, fantastical world. Virtual art was enticing, but it needed to do something too. “We’d see these NFT collections that didn’t have any utility,” Goner says. “That didn’t make any sense to me at the time, because you can cryptographically verify who owns these things. Why wouldn’t you offer some sort of utility?”

Gargamel told him the next day he loved the clubhouse idea so much that he’d want to do it even if it was a failure. They realized they just craved “a hilarious story to tell 10 years later,” Gargamel says. “I figured we’d say, ‘Yeah, we spent 40 grand and six months making a club for apes, but it didn’t go anywhere.’ And that’s how we actually started having fun in the process.” Goner chimes in: “Because at least we could say, ‘This is how we spent our summer. How ridiculous is that? We made the Bored Ape Yacht Club, and it was a total disaster.’ ”  Gargamel interjects to remind everyone that Tomato ended up reacting to their springtime victory by buying a Volvo, the memory of which incites another surge of laughter. They haven’t indulged in too many lavish purchases since then, but they all ordered Pelotons, Tomato bought a second Volvo, and they all paid their moms back for supporting them in becoming modern-day mad scientists. “I’ll never forget the night that we sold out,” says No Sass. “It was like two or three in the morning, and I hear my phone ring. I see that it’s Tomato and think something has gone terribly wrong. I pick up the phone and he’s like, ‘Dude, you need to wake up right now. We just made a million dollars.’ ” Nansen, a company that tracks blockchain analytics, reported that for one night Bored Ape Yacht Club had the most-used smart contract on Ethereum. “That’s absurd,” says Gargamel. “Uniswap [a popular network of decentralized finance apps] does billions and billions of transactions. But for that one night, we took over the world.” At press time, the foursome — let’s just go ahead and call them the Goners — had personally generated about $22 million from the secondary market alone. “Every time I talk to my parents about how this has blown up, they literally do not know what to say,” adds Tomato, whose mom started crying when he first explained what had happened.

Since its opening, the group has created pets for the apes via the Bored Ape Kennel Club, as well as the Mutant Ape Yacht Club. The latter was launched to expand the community to interested individuals who weren’t brave enough to “ape in” at the beginning: Yuga Labs unleashed 10,000 festering, bubbling, and/or oozing apes — complete with missing limbs and weird growths — via a surprise Dutch auction, which was used to deter bots from snatching up inventory by starting at a maximum price and working its way down. With a starting price of 3 ETH — or about $11,000 — this move opened up the playing field for about an hour, which is how long it took for the mutants to sell out. (The team also randomly airdropped 10,000 “serums,” which now pop up on OpenSea for tens of thousands of dollars, for pre-existing Apes to “drink” and thusly create zombified clones.) When they sold 500 tangible hats to ape-holders in June, the guys spent days packaging products in Gargamel’s mom’s backyard in Florida. “Immediately, some of them sold for thousands of dollars,” Gargamel exclaims. “It was a $25 hat. We were like, ‘Holy shit, we can be a Web3 streetwear brand. What does that even look like?’ ”

But the team is still searching for ways to create more value by building even more doors that the tokens can unlock. They recently surprised collectors with a treasure hunt; the winner received 5 ETH — worth more than $16,000 at press time — and another ape. And on Oct. 1, they announced the first annual Ape Fest, which runs from Oct. 31 through Nov. 6 and includse an in-person gallery party, yacht party, warehouse party, merch pop-up, and charity dinner in New York. Goner tells Rolling Stone that they’re currently discussing partnership ideas with multiple musical acts, but he refuses to reveal additional details in fear of jinxing things. Further down the line, the Goners see a future of interoperability, so that collectors can upload their apes into various corners of the metaverse: Hypothetically, an ape could appear inside a popular video game like Fortnite , and the user could dress it in digital versions of Bored Ape Yacht Club merch. “We want to encourage that as much as possible,” says Gargamel. “We’re making three-dimensional models of everybody’s ape now. But, y’know, making 10,000 perfect models takes a little bit of time.” At the start of the year, the guys had no idea their potentially disastrous idea would become a full-time job. They were working 14 hours a day to get the project up and running, and after the big drop, they decided to up that to 16 hours a day. “None of us have really slept in almost seven months now,” says Goner. “We’re teetering on burnout.” To avoid that, Yuga Labs has already put a slew of artists on staff and hired social media managers and Discord community managers, as well as a CFO. “We want to be a Web3 lifestyle company,” says Goner, who emphasizes that they’re still growing. “I’m a metaverse maximalist at this point. I think that Ready Player One experience is really on the cusp of happening in this world.” If Bored Ape Yacht Club is essentially this band of brothers’ debut album, there’s really no telling what their greatest hits will look like.

Some attributes are rarer than others, which makes these monkeys more collectible. Therefore, they are more expensive than others. For example, apes with Solid gold fur are rarer and more expensive than others. The floor price for these NFTs has consistently remained above 330 ETH throughout their sales history, having been offered for sale only twice. This rarity is attributed to their substantial investment potential, promising far greater returns in the future compared to a quick but less rewarding sale.

Who created the Bored Ape Yacht Club?

Let’s delve into the origins of this journey. In a twist of fate, a group of friends came together to establish their startup venture. They named their team Yuga Labs , driven by the ambition to construct a media empire exclusively dedicated to NFTs. Crafting Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) marked their inaugural stride toward achieving this ambitious vision.

Initially, all developers at Yuga Labs operated under pseudonyms, a practice they maintained until BuzzFeed unmasked two of them in a February 2022 article.

It was revealed that Gargamel is, in fact, Greg Solano, an author and literary critic, while Gordon Goner goes by Wiley Aronov. Sass and Emperor Tomato Ketchup, whose real names are Zeshan and Kerem respectively, both work as software engineers.

Prior to their involvement with BAYC, Gargamel and Gordon Goner had minimal presence in the crypto community, lacking any prior development experience in the field. Despite their lack of experience, both individuals had been active traders since 2017. Tomato and Sass were newcomers to the world of NFTs and cryptocurrencies. Nevertheless, the four of them collaborated, forming Yuga Labs, and subsequently launched BAYC under this banner.

Regarding the creation of actual art, none of the founders were responsible. The primary artist for the original BAYC collection is a woman known by the pseudonym Seneca, or the All-Seeing Seneca. Additional contributors included artists such as Thomas Dugley, Migwasher, and a couple who preferred to remain anonymous.

Before the inception of BAYC concept, the team at Yuga Labs was already immersed in project development. Yuga Labs realized that traditional art market concepts did not translate well into the digital realm. While paintings adorn living room walls, NFTs serve as social media profile pictures. However, the narrative took a dramatic turn when influential NFT personality, Pranksy , acquired nearly all the monkeys, announcing the purchase to his extensive Twitter following. This event catalyzed a rapid transformation; BAYC’s collection completely sold out within 12 hours.

Remarkably, the BAYC team emphasized in interviews that they had no prior contact with Pranksy before the sale. In the subsequent month, BAYC experienced a surge in secondary sales, marking the beginning of its rapid ascent.

Upon the launch of the Mutant Ape Yacht Club, owners of Bored Apes were gifted a unique “serum.” This serum could be fused with their existing Bored Ape, resulting in the creation of an entirely new Mutant Ape character.

Welcome to Bored Ape Yacht Club: The new NFT community where $60 million has already traded hands

“As Apes, we started changing our profile pics. We started following each other [on social media], like ‘Ape follow Ape.’”

Imagine an idyllic yacht club where thousands of cartoon apes mingle, discussing the latest science fiction they’ve read, or sharing tips on (crypto) art collecting. This is the newest world magicked into being by some combination of wishful thinking, Adam Smith’s invisible hand, and cryptographic tokens. Welcome to the  Bored Ape Yacht Club .

Bored Ape Yacht Club is the latest NFT project that’s starting to gain traction in crypto circles. Since its launch six weeks ago, it has seen $60 million in trading volume and is ranked tenth among collectibles projects by  data site DappRadar . Over 5,000 people are trading Apes. 

The way it works is not unlike existing hit NFT projects. There’s a limited supply of tokens, in this case, 10,000 unique Bored Ape NFTs. It does bake in a few features that have percolated in other corners of the crypto verses. For instance, owners of Bored Ape NFTs get access to special features, like a digital graffiti wall called The Bathroom. This notion of “token gated access” has featured prominently in so-called social or personal tokens projects, where members hold a certain balance of tokens to gain access to a special Discord server or Telegram chat group. 

The Apes also come with some potentially fundamental changes. For instance, Ape owners also get to do what they like with the  intellectual property associated with the token  - meaning they can create T-shirts or other merchandise with the art linked to the token they own, and no one is going to sue them for it. 

The success of Apes and other token projects like it raises the question: Is it possible for genuine communities to form around speculative financial assets? NFTs after all are tokens that are bought and sold on the open market. Why would people feel attached to these artefacts of the market and make them part of their identity? 

I spoke to a well known Bored Ape community member to hear his story.  Josh Ong  is a former tech journalist turned communications strategist and operator. He’s also been in crypto since the last bull market and weathered crypto winter. He collects sports cards (like, actual pieces of paper) and sneakers, as well as crypto collectibles, from CryptoKitties onward. Basically, he’s seen a lot of NFT projects come and go. So what makes Bored Apes special?

Ong talks about Apes the way someone might speak about their local football club, or best mates from uni. “I was there from day one. There was a magic in the community where everyone was just connecting,” he says. “As Apes, we started changing our profile pics. We started following each other [on social media], like ‘Ape follow Ape.’”

According to Ong, the route by which an NFT project gains traction is as follows: Astyle of art is chosen by the project’s originators to convey a particular vibe and thus attract a specific crowd. In the case of Apes, it’s a 90s look that’s a little bit more high-fidelity than the retro and super successful pixelated CryptoPunks. Think classic Sierra Online adventure games.

“ Aliens  [an NFT project] came out with a style that attracted a certain type of person and they became this really fast connecting community,” Ong says. “There’s room for thousands of these clubs. There’s dogs and cats and llamas.”

Once the art has seeded a group of fans-slash-investors, the next task is to build up the structures of community. In the past, this was left to chance: CryptoPunks fans could create their own chat rooms to talk about the project with one another. Or developed their own ways of signalling their membership, like changing their social media profile to that of a CryptoPunk they owned (which  Jay-Z recently did ). But as NFT projects evolve, they start building these features from the beginning, like the Apes token-gated chat.

Once that’s in place, a project needs stuff for people to do. This was the promise of “composability” on blockchains like Ethereum. The idea is that since all the software is open source and the smart contracts live on a blockchain for anyone to interact with, in theory people could create new projects that worked with these smart contracts, creating a world of “composable” software. This for example, is how DeFi took off, creating a bewildering economy of smart contracts lending to other smart contracts which act as collateral for yet more smart contracts. 

But the notion of composability is also changing as NFTs mature. It’s not just the smart contracts that are composable these days, it’s also the humans standing behind the wallet addresses. With Apes, Ong reckons there’s overlap between collectors from the Top Shot world and early Apes buyers, leading to a flow of investors from one NFT project to another. 

“In some sense, it was incubated in the Top Shot culture. There were groups in Top Shot, and I was part of some private Discord, where Top Shot collectors aped in together. They carried over some seeds from Top Shot,” he says. 

In the case of Apes and NFT projects in general, the idea is to find things for users and investors to do with their tokens. So partnerships are struck up to extend the capabilities of a token. For the Apes, this meant working with Sandbox, a 3D world on a blockchain where Apes can turn their cartoon selves into  three-dimensional avatars . There’s also an official Yacht Club plot of land in the world. 

The integrations with other crypto projects, and the circulation of investors from one project to another, marks a maturation of the NFT space. As the NFT ecosystem of artists, programmers, collectors and speculators matures, new projects can be ever more self-referential and “crypto native” to attract attention. Even the Bored Ape name itself is an exercise in recursion: the DeFi world often uses the verb to  “ape in ” to mean ploughing capital into a project just because others are doing so, to avoid missing out on the next hot thing. 

Suppose a project is lucky enough to get traction and become a success. Prices skyrocket. What happens next? For anyone familiar with subcultures that cross the chasm into mainstream adoption, it’s easy to guess the outcome: Cries of ‘sellout!’ promptly follow. As big money is minted from Ape collections, this is what worries Ong. Will the tongue-in-cheek naming of the project — elite apes gathered at their yacht club — be prophetic? 

Ong takes a dig at CryptoPunks, which have become accessible only to the wealthiest crypto collectors. The “floor” for CryptoPunks stands at  about 16 ETH , which is worth about $32,000 as I write this on June 28. “I look at CryptoPunks: it’s not very punk right now. It’s extremely elitist right now. It’s unavailable to most people, and is in the auction houses and things like that,” Ong says. “Is [Bored Apes] going to become the new CryptoPunks? Maybe.”

Ong talks about how fortunes are being minted overnight on Bored Apes, raising the specter of greater inequality and elitism. A recent airdrop, or gifting, of Bored Ape Kennel Club tokens to existing Ape holders meant that some people were making life-changing amounts overnight, he said. Each Kennel token was worth about $3,000 when they were released. “Apes are watching fortunes made from the Kennel Club airdrop. Those who bought multiple have been able to watch their lives change for the better.” he says. 

Those concerns may be unfounded, at least for now. As the price of Ether has halved from its peak of just over $4,000 in May, the wealth effect and attendant inequality generated by the money may evaporate naturally. How does a token community stay together during a bear market? Ong  echoes a theory  that the economist Carlota Perez has put forward in her seminal book,  Technological Revolutions and Financial Capital —that financial speculation often accompanies and enables innovation. “Often, the ups and downs help sort out the rent-seekers versus the creators.” Ong says. 

As prices rise and fall, communities continue to strengthen or are washed away by the market’s wave. In this regard, Bored Apes and NFTs are no different from any other class of collectibles, whether they’re baseball cards or bottles of rare wine, and, increasingly the once rarified space of publicly traded equities. It’s the mapping of asset to collectible, and investor to fan that’s blurring the boundaries between finance and fun. As Ong sees it: “What a community is worth to anyone, that’s an interesting equation. What does it mean to find your closest friends over something as silly as a cartoon avatar?”

The Bored Ape Yacht Club was launched in April 2021 by four friends based in New York – Gargamel, Gordon Goner, Emperor Tomato Ketchup, and No Sass. The founders set up an LLC called Yuga Labs to officially register the project.

Today, Bored Ape Yacht Club is one of the most sought-after NFT projects with a total valuation crossing $1 billion. The floor price of Bored Apes currently hovers around 80 ETH ($100,000), a mind-boggling increase from its modest launch price. Let’s look at what makes this project stand out.

3- Unique Aspects That Make Bored Ape Yacht Club Stand Out

So what exactly gives BAYC its vaunted status and desirability in the NFT space? Several key traits set this collection apart:

• Limited Supply and Scarcity: With only 10,000 Apes in existence, BAYC combines digital scarcity with exclusivity. This drives up demand among collectors seeking limited edition NFT art.
• Randomly Generated Traits: Each Bored Ape has a unique combination of traits mapped to different levels of rarity. This includes fur, clothes, expressions, and more. Some traits like golden fur or laser eyes are ultra-rare.

While the multimillion dollar price tags and celebrity associations have fueled the Bored Ape Yacht Club mania, there are deeper sociological implications. At its core, BAYC represents a new model of decentralized brand-building and online community shaping popular culture.

New Social Scene: BAYC has created a digital members club where ownership of NFT acts as access pass to an exclusive network full of events and perks. This provides a novel social scene.

• Step 1: Get a Crypto Wallet: To hold NFTs, you need a digital Ethereum wallet like MetaMask. This stores crypto assets and NFTs on the blockchain.
• Step 2 – Fund Your Wallet: Transfer sufficient ETH from an exchange to your wallet to cover the cost of the Bored Ape plus transaction fees on Ethereum.
• Step 3 – Join an NFT Marketplace : Marketplaces like OpenSea allow buying and selling of NFTs. Create an account there and connect your funded wallet.
• Step 4 – Browse Listings: Search for available Bored Ape listings and filter based on desired traits, features, and prices. Set alerts for new listings.

In this post, I will walk you through how I implemented the BoredApeYachtClub NFT smart contract in Cadence, the smart contract language used by the Flow blockchain and popular platforms like NBA Top Shot and Ticketmaster .

Architectural Differences of Defining NFTs in Solidity & Cadence

Solidity is the smart contract language that the BAYC smart contract is written in. Below I will highlight key differences between the two languages.

In Solidity smart contracts act as a central ledger that stores assets themselves. An NFT contract in Solidity looks something like this:

As you can see, NFTs are stored as a simple mapping from `nft id` => `owner address`. The NFT itself is not an asset or even an object, rather it is literally a number that sits in the contract.

The issue with this approach is it is extremely fragile. This is because Solidity behaves like any general-purpose programming language in how variables are handled. There are no special types for NFTs; rather they are represented as integers which puts the responsibility on the developer to ensure nothing goes wrong.

Because of the “resource-oriented” model of Cadence, NFTs are represented as actual objects that get moved around. Assets are not allowed to be lost; if a developer forgets to store a resource somewhere or destroy it, Cadence will fail at compile time and not allow you to run that code.

Additionally, Cadence provides users true ownership over their assets. Instead of the smart contract storing a mapping of data in the contract, Cadence has users store NFT collections (and all other data) inside their own accounts. This way, users have complete control over their assets. An NFT contract in Cadence looks something like this:

Access Control

Another key difference we will encounter is how we restrict certain functions to certain people. 

For example, how do we make sure the mint function is only callable by the owner? In Solidity, you use a combination of OpenZeppelin’s Ownable contract and function modifiers to do this like so:

Cadence however has built-in access control through the use of resources, access modifiers, and capabilities. We can define a resource (object) called Owner and store it in the owner’s account storage, allowing them to borrow a reference to it and flip the sale state at any time and removing the need for 3rd party libraries like OpenZeppelin. It looks something like this:

Re-writing BAYC from Solidity to Cadence

Before reading on, if you’d like to skip right to the code, see this GitHub repo containing both contracts and associated Cadence transactions/scripts.

Implementing the NFT Standard

It is important to understand that the BAYC contract is an NFT contract, and thus implements the NFT-standard (or “ERC-721”) contract in Solidity. The way this works is the BAYC contract inherits a ton of default behavior like minting, storage, and more from the ERC-721 contract. It also adds some of its own, BAYC specific, functionality on top.

With this in mind, the first step to re-writing the contract is to implement a default implementation of the NFT-standard (or “NonFungibleToken”) contract interface in Cadence. Instead of simply inheriting from the ERC-721 contract like you do in Solidity, you must explicitly define all “NonFungibleToken” required code in your new contract. 

Check out this bare-minimum contract that implements the “NonFungibleToken” interface:

What are the main features of this contract? Well, most importantly, you can see we have a “ resource ” called NFT. In Cadence, resources represent objects that we can move and store. In this case, it represents an asset named NFT that we will mint and store in users accounts.

Next we have a resource named “Collection”. This represents an object that will store NFT assets inside of it. Instead of storing individual NFTs in a user's account, we will instead store a whole Collection that contains the NFTs themselves. This will make it much easier to discover all of our BAYC NFTs because they will live in one place.

The Collection resource itself has a few functions inside of it: deposit and withdraw (which are self explanatory), getIDs (to read the ids of the NFTs someone owns), and borrowApeNFT (to discover basic metadata of an NFT).

The “paths” you see in this contract, namely CollectionStoragePath and CollectionPublicPath, describe where in the account you’ll be able to find the Collection resource once we store it. 

Everything else like totalSupply and the few events, must be included to abide by the NonFungibleToken interface. This line, defined in the init function of the NFT resource, will make sure the totalSupply is incremented every time an NFT is created:

Minting Functionality

Now that we have covered implementing the NFT standard, let's add the rest of the contract.

The next most important step is re-writing minting. This is the minting function in the Solidity contract:

The first step of the minting function is to make sure some checks are true:

• Checks to make sure the sale is active
• Doesn’t allow the user to mint more than the max amount allowed
• Ensures the total supply will not exceed the max apes allowed
• Makes sure the amount of Ether passed in equals the (price * quantity) of the apes being bought.

Then, it runs a loop that calls the mint function with the sender’s address and an incremental id that will represent each NFT.

To implement this in Cadence, we’ll need to define some variables to run our checks, and then a mint function:

There are a few differences here. First, we use something called “pre-conditions” to assert conditions are true before the function even starts. This is a native feature to Cadence to ensure correct behavior.

Next, we run a loop that uses a passed-in reference to the buyer’s BAYC collection and deposit the apes there. So, instead of simply mapping an NFT’s id to an owner’s address, we are passing in a reference to the buyer’s NFT collection and literally moving an asset into the collection.

Another key difference is that in Solidity, the Ether (or payment) is passed to the contract. In Cadence, we pass the payment in as yet another resource and transfer that payment to the owner’s vault. 

Notice we had to give the variables default values in the init function. I set them to the exact same default variables as they do in Solidity here:

The biggest difference between Solidity and Cadence is how we handle metadata. In Solidity, metadata is stored off-chain in things like IPFS, a decentralized storage network. DApps then use a “uri” to fetch different NFTs metadata based on their ids.

In Cadence, besides images or other heavy metadata, most metadata is stored on-chain. This is fantastic for composability and other things like verifying metadata directly in our contracts that you can’t do in Solidity. The only issue will be hiding our metadata upon minting. If the blockchain is public, and metadata is on-chain, how do we prevent users from accessing the data of NFTs while minting?

Well, it turns out the answer is quite easy: upload metadata after users have minted! This is exactly how it’s done in Solidity anyways by changing the “uri” after users have minted.

To do this, we must define two things:

• An Owner resource that will allow the owner to upload metadata and flip the sale state. This resource will get stored in the owner’s account to access these functions.
• A Template struct that the Owner can use to upload metadata when they like using the fulfillMetadata function. We will use the serial of the NFT (an incremental id from 0) to map to the Template data:

We then create an Owner resource and store it in the contract deployer’s account during the init function of the contract:

This will allow the owner to borrow the Owner resource from their account at any time and fulfill metadata or flip the sale state. Again, we do not need any 3rd party libraries like OpenZeppelin to manage access control over our owner functions. 

The NFT Standards discussed today are very different. While Solidity represents ownership by mapping an integer to an address, Cadence takes a more intuitive approach with a resource-oriented model by depositing unlosable objects into collections that users store and control.

Furthermore, the security mechanisms of Cadence through its built-in access control and strongly typed syntax makes it very hard for the developer to mess up, which is crucial when dealing with assets as valuable as Bored Apes.

Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT game coming Q2 2022: What to expect

The Sandbox publisher, Animoca Brands, is teaming up with blockbuster NFT tribe Yuga Labs on a game in the Bored Ape Yacht Club BAYC space.

If you've kept even a casual eye on the NFT space in recent times you would have heard of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). Despite the less than exciting name, this procedurally generated collection of 10,000 art tokens set the scene on fire in April 2021. Originally selling for around US$200 each, the ritziest has since sold for US$3.2 million.

Happy days for that lucky punter!

As well as existing as a collectible piece of art, a BAYC token also doubles as a key to various unlockables. This includes various airdrops and access to exclusive events, as well as entry to the BAYC virtual club. A smaller-scale version of what we're seeing with Metakey. Yep, these apes have legit gone to the moon. Impressive considering that despite being randomly generated, they all look stoned as.

Speaking of stoners, Bored Ape Yacht Club is becoming a game.

When will the BAYC game come out?

It's scheduled for release in Q2 2022, which is awfully close, and indicates one of the following:

• It's been in development for some time.
• It's small in scope and being turned around quickly.
• It heavily relies on the engine from an existing game, and is effectively just reskinning the models and world.

What formats will the Bored Ape Yacht Club game be on?

This has not officially been announced. However, looking into Animoca's history, a safe bet would be PC, iOS and Android.

The BAYC game: What will it be like?

I've covered a zillion game announcements in my 25 years in the industry, and few have been as vague as this one. No gameplay. No assets. Not even a genre. All we know is that it's coming very soon and that it will adopt play-to-earn mechanics.

The original Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT drop didn't come immersed in a stack of world building either. What we know is that there's a club house, which has rooms in it where members can interact with each other. As of the time of writing, the Bathroom is the only room of the club house open. Members can go in and write funny stuff on the walls.

It would make sense that the game would feature the club house as a hub or key location. We can assume the sense of humour will remain intact. You'd like to think that members will be able to carry their NFT into the game as a character skin as well. What genre.

The relatively small turnaround time for the BAYC game has me thinking it won't over-reach in terms of gameplay. We won't be getting a big 3D world to explore here, such as in Illuvium . It's not going to be an open-world RPG or a first-person shooter. Visuals will be cartoony and not overly detailed – possibly retro.

At a stretch we may get a platformer, but more likely is a collectible card game or a strategy battler akin to a Pokémon or an Axie Infinity . Ideally, there could be some breeding or mechanic by which new forms can be minted as part of a second-tier batch of BAYC ape tokens.

Who is Animoca Brands?

While it's relatively simple to understand what Bored Ape Yacht Club is all about, the name Animoca Brands may be lesser known. It shouldn't be. These guys have been on the front foot with first blockchain gaming and crypto games, and now NFT games, since the very start. In fact, we interviewed founder Yat Siu way back in 2018 (see video below).

Animoca hasn't positioned itself as a developer as much as a traditional publisher. The company is constantly securing large investment, and then piling that back into the acquisition of NFT games or big-name partnerships. These then sit under its wealthy, watchful eyes. Although, from the outside looking in at least, said games and developers continue to do their thing autonomously.

You may know Animoca thanks to The Sandbox or Cryptokitties. It's also behind F1 Delta Time , Phantom Galaxies , Revv Racing , Crazy Defense Heroes and the GAMEE Token. It's also had a hand in several non-NFT game experiences. This includes titles for brands like WWE , Power Rangers and The Addams Family , and known games like Siegecraft , Base One and Gunscape .

There are countless more fingers in pies. Way more than I can list here. Even earlier this week Animoca announced a deal with champion horse breeder Aquis One to tokenise its animals. It's never ending.

The nascent sector, which was sizzling hot two years ago before dropping down to earth, is anticipated to retest another market bull run probably before the end of this year. Data compiled by cryptoslam.io , an on-chain market data aggregator, indicates that the global non-fungible token market has increased in trading sales volume. In the past seven days, the NFT market has garnered a trading sales volume of $289 million, representing a 46.80% increase from the past week.

Non-fungible token collections hosted on the Bitcoin blockchain network, the same network that hosts the flagship crypto Bitcoin, ‘BTC’, are the most-traded NFT collection this week. In the past seven days, the Bitcoin-based NFT collections have amassed a trading sales volume of $27 million, representing a 23% rise from the previous week.

Digital collectibles on Ethereum, the once primarily adopted NFT blockchain, are the second most-traded NFT collections this week. In the past seven days, Ethereum-based NFT collections have recorded a trading sales volume of $9.7 million, representing a 7.09% from the past week.

Non-fungible tokens hosted on Solana, an open-source blockchain that supports smart contracts, including non-fungible tokens and various decentralized applications, and Polygon, an Ethereum scaling solution, are the third and fourth most traded NFT collections this week. In the past seven days, Solana NFTs have recorded a trading sales volume of $5.2 million, while Polygon NFTs have amassed a sales volume of $1.3 million.

In the past seven days, the Bitcoin ordinal collection has amassed a trading sales volume of $54 million, representing a 168% rise from the previous week.

2. $PUP BRC-20 NFT Collection

$PUP, a non-fungible token collection created on the Bitcoin blockchain network using the BRC-20 protocol, is this week’s second most-selling NFT collection. In the past seven days, the $PUP BRC-20 NFT collection has recorded a trading sales volume of $26 million, representing a 5,621% increase from the past week.

3. Froganas NFT Collection

Froganas, a non-fungible token collection that features a limited edition of 5,555 humanoid frogs hosted on the Solana blockchain network, is this week’s third most-selling NFT collection. In the past seven days, the Froganas NFT collection has recorded a sales volume of $12.9 million. The Froganas NFT trading sales volume has surged 268% this week from the past week.

4. NodeMonkes NFT Collection

NodeMonkes, an NFT collection that features a limited supply of 10,000 NFTs hosted on the Bitcoin blockchain network, is this week’s fourth most-selling NFT collection. In the past seven days, the NodeMonkes NFT collection has amassed a trading sales volume of $12.6 million. The NodeMonkes NFT trading sales volume has risen 103% from the past week.

5. DMarket NFT Collection

DMarket, a non-fungible token collection from a renowned virtual asset marketplace, DMarket hosted on the Mythos Chain blockchain network, is this week’s fifth most-selling NFT collection. In the past seven days, the DMarket NFT collection has recorded a trading sales volume of $7.1 million, representing a 10.81% surge from the past week.

6. Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT Collection

Bored Ape Yacht Club, the flagship NFT collection for the digital asset incubation studio Yuga Labs that features a fixed edition of 10,000 NFTs hosted on the Ethereum blockchain network, is this week’s sixth most-selling NFT collection. In the past seven days, the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection has recorded a trading sales volume of $6.5 million, representing a 2.44% drop from the past week.

7. Tensorians NFT Collection

Tensorians, an NFT collection from the NFT market platform Tensor featuring a limited supply of 10,000 pixilated NFTs hosted on the Solana blockchain network, is this week’s seventh most-selling NFT collection. The Tensorians NFT collection has raised a trading sales volume of $6.3 million in the past seven days. Tensorians NFT trading sales volume has risen by 54% this week from the past week.

8. Dokyo NFT Collection

Dokyo, a non-fungible token collection featuring a limited supply of 5,555 NFTs hosted on the Avalanche blockchain network, is this week’s eighth most-selling NFT collection. The Dokyo NFT collection has amassed a trading sales volume of $5.4 million in the past seven days, representing a 219% rise from the past week.

9. Mad Lad NFT Collection

Mad Lads, an NFT collection from the Solana framework development company Coral, featuring a limited set of 10,000 NFTs hosted on the Solana network, is this week’s ninth most-selling NFT collection. In the past seven days, the Mad Lads NFT collection has recorded a trading sale of $5.2 million, representing a 12.77% drop from the past week.

10. CryptoPunks NFT Collection

CryptoPunks, a non-fungible token collection previously from the digital asset incubation studio Larva Labs but now owned by Bored Ape Yacht Club creator Yuga Labs, is this week’s tenth most-selling NFT collection. In the past seven days, CryptoPunks, an NFT collection featuring a limited supply of 10,000 NFTs hosted on Ethereum, has amassed a trading sales volume of $3.3 million, closing our ten top-selling NFTs this week.

Welcome to the History of Crypto, a Cointelegraph series that brings readers back to the most significant events in the crypto space. Powered by Phemex, the timeline allows crypto community members to explore and look back at the important events that shaped the industry into what it is today.

In the tumultuous landscape of the digital age, where trends come and go at the speed of a click, one phenomenon has risen to prominence like few others: nonfungible tokens (NFTs). The years 2020 and 2021 marked a period of unprecedented growth and widespread adoption of these digital assets, reshaping the way we perceive ownership, art and the internet itself. In fact, in 2021 alone, the NFT market saw approximately $25 billion in trading volume, compared to an almost non-existent metric just a few years prior.

While the concept of blockchain technology had been around for over a decade, the emergence of NFTs captured the imagination of both creators and collectors. NFTs represent unique digital assets stored on a blockchain, ensuring their scarcity and authenticity. This innovation allowed for the tokenization of digital art, music, videos and even tweets, turning intangible creations into valuable commodities.

One of the earliest and most notable examples of NFTs gaining widespread attention in 2017 was CryptoKitties. Developed by Canadian studio Axiom Zen, CryptoKitties is a blockchain-based virtual game that allows players to purchase, collect, breed and sell virtual cats. Following the success of CryptoKitties, numerous other projects began experimenting with NFTs for various purposes, including digital art, virtual real estate, in-game items and more. Platforms like Decentraland and NBA Top Shot gained traction during this period, showcasing the diverse applications of NFTs beyond gaming.

Then, between 2020 and 2021, mainstream adoption exploded.

NFTs reached new levels of mainstream recognition in 2021 as high-profile sales made headlines, including digital artwork selling for millions of dollars and celebrities launching their own NFT collections. In one such case, on Nov. 2, 2021, award-winning writer and director Quentin Tarantino announced he would auction off seven uncut scenes from Pulp Fiction as NFTs, built on the Secret Network. 

Each being a part of a 10,000 algorithmically generated profile pictures collection, in March 2021, a CryptoPunk NFT (#7804) sold for over $7.5 million at auction, marking one of the highest prices paid for a single CryptoPunk at the time. Following this milestone, in October 2021, a rare triple Bored Ape set, consisting of three apes sold as a bundle, fetched over $24 million at a Sotheby’s auction. At the same time, the number of NFT marketplaces expanded rapidly during this period. Platforms such as OpenSea, Rarible, Foundation and Nifty Gateway gained widespread popularity, providing avenues for creators to mint and sell their digital assets. OpenSea emerged as one of the largest NFT marketplaces, with monthly trading volumes surpassing $1 billion by mid-2021, a figure since overtaken by Blur and OKX NFT.

Legal disputes also emerged over the ownership and authenticity of digital assets, highlighting the need for clear regulations and guidelines. Some platforms implemented verification mechanisms to authenticate the originality of NFTs and protect creators’ rights, while others grappled with defining ownership in decentralized ecosystems. Indeed, following the widespread publicity of the Pulp Fiction NFTs, Miramax sued the Hollywood director in a copyright lawsuit that was settled in September 2022. Yuga Labs, the current owner of both the BAYC and CryptoPunks series, also faced similar legal battles over its digital collections. 

Yet, all was not lost; with the ongoing crypto bull market, NFTs trading volume has recovered. New NFT projects, especially in Hong Kong, are surging in popularity, with collections gobbled up shortly after release. New protocols, such as ParaSpace (now Parallel Finance), are developing new tools for the ever-increasing NFT lending market. Meanwhile, new Ethereum token standards, such as ERC-404, seek to fractionalize NFTs and enable their widespread access. 

Overall, the NFT space continues to evolve, with ongoing experimentation in various industries and new platforms emerging to cater to different niches within the NFT ecosystem. Additionally, efforts to address environmental concerns and improve the sustainability of blockchain technology are underway as developers and enthusiasts seek to ensure the long-term viability of NFTs as a form of digital ownership and expression.

What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

Moscow Country Club Moscow Country Club

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■

“Breakfast & Lunch among friends”

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!
