Yachting in Greece

Greek Seas and coasts with the numerous advantages they have to offer, turned Yachting to be a very popular activity for both Greeks and foreign visitors.

A trip on the calm Greek waters, on your own or a chartered yacht, offers you the possibility to sail among extremely beautiful clusters of islands, to anchor in naturally protected bays of rare beauty, to visit inaccessible beaches and to swim with safety in exceptionally clear and transparent waters.

It is useful to divide the Greek seas into 4 zones running from North to South, and thus examine the course of the summer winds.

Winds vary greatly from zone to zone, (except when the meltemia winds are blowing, which are very strong, and result in large areas overlapping and having the same features).

Nowadays there are 19 marinas with 6,661 docking places in Greece, offering high quality services. Quite a few of these marinas have been awarded by the European Blue Flag programme. New modern marinas, hotel ports and moorings for the safe docking of boats already operate or are in the process of starting their operation, in order to meet the needs of tourists coming to Greece by sea in the most satisfactory way and under the safest conditions.

Bareboat Charter In the Med

Hello /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Myself and 3 crew are looking to charter a Yacht in greece next year, October time. There are many many advertisments offering all sorts of deals and services. Can anybody recomend any one inparticular or anything to watch out for ?  

I appreciate it's the Ionian but I've chartered with www.corfuyachting.com for many years out of Gouvia. Small family business, very laid back and friendly. Run by two Brothers. Some good deals particularly on the older boats/out of season. There are lots of lovely places to sail to including Paxos, Lefkas and Cephalonia (if you have two weeks). Dude  

In October Easy jet now fly to corfu, most of the charter flights tend to finish the first week or so. Have a look at http://sailingissues.com/ for good info on Greek waters  

The site below has loads of useful info - including recommended charter companies in Greece and Turkey. I haven't used their "recommended charter" services myself (having joined the impoverished boat owner's club), but their detailed information on navigation and the sailing area is excellent. http://www.sailingissues.com/ JimB might also give you a steer.

I have a greek friend who charters out his own Beneteau 381 when he's not using her himself. Friendly, personal service, and a well looked after boat. Most of his charterers come back year after year and book the boat for quite long periods. The website says Athens based, but he also takes her across to the Ionian for some time each year if that's your preferred destination http://kaloudas-yachting.com/Charter.html

You are indeed spoilt or choice from Corfu. Easyjet has transformed access. Next year flying daily. This year we paid £130 return in October. Best month of the year as like an English summer should be. Everything is still open but the crowds have gone. Most of the operators are less busy so you will get good choice of boats and good prices. There are big boys such as Kiriacoulis and Moorings, local ones such as Odysseus and many small operators with a few boats such as Artemis, Bobs Boats, Pinnacle, Corfu Yachting all run by Brits. Make sure you get a big enough boat 37 footer is about right and a 42 not too big. Google Yacht Charter Corfu. For elsewhere in Greece suggest you try the UK agents such as Templecraft. For a first time trip Corfu takes a lot of beating for reasons others have mentioned Enjoy

First, decide which area in Greece you want to sail in. For October, more southerly districts will give you a better probability of avoiding the onset of unsettled weather: Rhodes, Kos, Kalamata, Cyclades (Paros, or from Athens or Porto Heli if you don't mind longer passages) For detailed comparison of the various cruise areas, go to my web site - designed to answer your question.
