1972 Laser Sailboat - how to repair crack in deck under bow eye

I just purchased a 1972 Laser sailboat. It has a nasty crack through the fiberglass on the deck under the bow eye. The person I purchased it from said that it happened when he set the boat upside down on its deck and hit the bow eye too hard on a piece of wood. I removed the bow eye to assess the damage and found that I could push down the cracked area from between 1/8th and 1/4 of an inch. When I looked in under the fiberglass I saw what appeared to be wood (the fiberglass was separated from the wood). I'm not sure how the laser is constructed, so I don't know if there is some sort of "beam" running down the center-line of the deck (between the mast and the bow) or if there is just a block of wood under the area where the bow eye is. If there is some sort of beam, would it be possible to repair the crack and then move the bow eye fore or aft of the damaged area? Or, would it be better to fix the area where the crack is and reattach the bow eye where it is now? Note that I do use the bow eye to tie to on my trailer, so whatever I do will need to be solid. I would greatly appreciate any advice and instruction that you can give me on the how this repair should be made.

Is that a roller Eye or just a plastic eye cleat thingy. You could just cut a rectangle out of your deck were the damage is..and 5200 another backer ply ( larger then the cutout ) in the same location..then glass the deck and reinstall your 'eye' ( whatever it is ). Your gonna have a finished area on deck instead of a nonskid pattern .. but hey YD. Click to expand...

She's named this boat "State of Alert," and you can see why. By the way, #811 was the very first Laser ever in the State of Maine.

To repair this, we got a "Mast Step Repair Kit" which included the mast step tube attached to a deck piece a little less than 1 meter square, a mounting flange, a plywood block with a hole for the bottom of the mast step, and a template with instructions on getting the proper rake, etc. We had to supply bondo, fiberglass and resin. The repair was undertaken in July 1990.

Lots of water came oozing out of the deck's foam core. This was (is) a leaky boat.

How to Repair a Laser®/ILCA Daggerboard

How to Repair a Laser®/ILCA Daggerboard

We had a visit from David Summerville of Phoenix Marine at the Rooster Head Office to demonstrate how he repairs Laser® / ILCA Foils.

I am sure that after watching the video you will be well equipped and encouraged to do it yourself, but if you have realised how much time and materials are required, then you might also like to leave it to the experts. Phoenix Marine will repair and re spray (with a water based polyurethane finish using a spray oven). Please contact them directly for a quote.

In the video David used polyester products, which are fine and low cost, but epoxy products these days give a stronger bond, not so brittle as polyester/GRP repairs, but the materials on the downside cost slightly more, and take longer to fully cure. Both products need warm surfaces and air temperatures (Over 12deg C) to full cure.  The WEST system has a useful kit called the  WEST SYSTEM 105K GLASS FIBRE BOAT REPAIR KIT.  

This kit is complete with all the brushes and pots you need, plus 'peel ply',  to give a finish to the epoxy surface, ready for final white coating again with epoxy resin mix, but we suggest using with a very small amount of the WEST white pigment to give a final finish. You will also need some Acetone solvent either in tins of 250ml, 500ml or 1 Litre to clean up brushes and tools etc. Acetone works with both epoxy and polyester resin products .

Valid for one year (12 months) from the ship date. Valid on all boats with a luff length up to 22 meters. Includes all One Design sails. You will automatically be registered for one year (12 months) of free sail care when your new sail is shipped. Normal wear and tear is covered. Includes end of season consultation and sail check by North Sails Certified Service team. Clients are responsible for the transportation of sails to the local North loft.

One Year Free Sail Care does not apply to the following: Overnight Regatta Repair, North downwind sails used for racing, sail washing, shipping or delivery, aftermarket upgrades or retrofitting performance reshaping. If damage to your sail approaches or exceeds its current value, the sail may be deemed not repairable.
